Facility Safety: How to Secure Pallet Drop Areas Accessed by Overhead Hoists

Many manufacturing and material handling facilities - especially chemical companies and food processing plants – use overhead hoists to load and unload materials to pallet drop areas or production platforms. In some operations, overhead hoists lift materials up to an elevated work platform instead of using a lift truck. This is the traditional method of lifting super sacks up to the processing platform where they can be dumped into hoppers.

Other facilities may use a lift truck to elevate the material up to the platform, but then will use an overhead hoist to access the material once they are ready to work with the material. This is a common method of emptying bags of ingredients off of a pallet.

In both of these instances, employees typically work around the ledges of these elevated platforms. In these scenarios, a pro-active guarding solution should be installed to keep workers and material from falling from the elevated platform.

When you are looking to secure these areas, it’s important to keep these things in mind: • If the operation requires overhead access, then the safety device must be designed to integrate with the machinery that is being used. For instance, the application may feature an overhead crane used to lift super sacks up to the platform or a vacuum hoist that is used to unload material off of a pallet. In both examples, the safety device in place cannot include overhead mechanics for successful and smooth operation. The safety gate needs to provide a clear overhead path to move the material through the area to be successful.

• Take a look at the access required at both the ledge and above the pallet drop or production area. Note how the materials are being unloaded and unloaded. If a forklift is lifting material up to the ledge and a hoist is being used to unload the material then the overhead access is only needed on the operator’s side.

Also determine if the materials have to be moved to another spot or if will they be picked from one or both sides. These bits of information can dictate the type of safety gate required.

• Determine the amount of space you have on the pallet drop area. The overhead device will need enough room to move the material into the pallet drop area. Employees must have enough room to work with the material and be kept safe from any swinging motions from equipment above. This detail will not only keep employees safe, it will also ensure any safety barriers that you install do not impede with productivity.

It’s important to note that chains or ropes that latch across the area will not suffice as fall protection for employees; it won’t help you comply with OSHA and ANSI fall protection regulations either.

Solid protective barriers that are in place at all times — including when material is being loaded, picked, staged, removed, etc. — are needed in these applications - any that employees are working on elevated surfaces of four feet or more. In the selection process, make sure you note any special details about your application and equipment before you work with a safety gate provider to determine the best solution for your needs.

Packaging the future

Automating packaging processes can improve productivity, quality and safety on site. Unsurprisingly then, it has become a crucial investment for packaging facilities. But, where do you start? This article highlights the key considerations when choosing robotics and automation for packaging applications.

With the rise of Industry 4.0, more companies are opting to add automation to their processes — and packaging processes are no exception. This increasingly common tactic is driven by the same reasons that automation and robotics were first brought to the manufacturing workplace — to free human workers from dangerous packaging tasks jobs, to eliminate errors and to cut costs.

Whether a packaging company is well accustomed to automation, or they’re taking the first leap into investing in the technology, the considerations should be the same.

Automation can be complex. In fact, the phrase ‘automation’ refers to an array of technology. Any piece of automatic or semi-automatic machinery on a factory floor — whether that’s a simple conveyor or a complicated industrial robot — is technically automation. Most packaging processes already use some form of automation on site.

Palletizing robots, for instance, are commonplace in most large-scale warehousing facilities. However, new varieties of robotic equipment are becoming available to take on more complicated packaging tasks.

However, adding complicated automation to a packaging process is no easy feat. In fact, the size and complexity of the sites separate packaging processes must be considered carefully. The larger the system, the more likely plant managers should consider a multidisciplinary robot that can perform several steps simultaneously.

Alternatively, they may choose to invest in several different machines to manage separate tasks.

Consider this as an example. A warehousing and distribution facility for fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) may have separate packaging areas for both incoming and outgoing goods. At the site, incoming boxes must be opened and unpacked before the materials can be sorted for distribution. To speed up this process, the site could invest in an automated box opening solution — an encased robot which can automatically cut boxes.

This type of robotic machinery is beneficial reducing the likelihood of accidents on the shop floor. By taking human workers out of the equation, and therefore removing the need for handheld knives in the warehouse, the chance of injury is automatically reduced.

That said, this robot is only suitable for one small process in the facility. Should the site wish to fully automate its packaging process, the plant manager will need to invest in several different types of automated equipment. For instance, on a line that incorporates several processes, a six-axis robot could be used to stack and palletise finished products — once they have been opened by our automated box opening solution. Following this, an automated guided vehicle (AGV) might be required to move them to a different area of the factory floor.

Naturally, the more automation that is involved, the more complicated the integration process gets. With this in mind, plant managers should consider to what degree they want to automate — and how much is actually necessary.

Smaller factories may not have the same investment capabilities and instead, should look to make small incremental processes to automate their facilities. For example, adding sensors to a preexisting machine could solve a common problem during cartoning processes.

During this process, machines cannot reliably detect when a box flap is partially up or down, causing a misread. For packaging, this can cause a stoppage in the production line. Adding photoelectric sensors with background suppression could allow the technology to scan the angles of the packaging and determine if the flap angle will cause a problem with case-sealing operations.

If this is the case, the sensor triggers an output a message to halt the line, allowing an operator to correct the situation. Plant managers in packaging facilities can use information from these sensors to fine tune case erecting, packing and sealing machines, providing a costeffective alternative to expensive automation Picking and packing processes are another area which could benefit from a smaller automation investment. This process is often where the biggest bottlenecks occur. To combat this, manufacturers can choose an end of arm tooling design (EOAT) on a robot that can pick one or multiple products at a time. The majority of tooling designed for pick-and-pack applications use lightweight vacuum cups or mechanical and multi product grippers for higher throughput.

Regardless of the EOAT open used, this provides a sure fire way of automating an otherwise tedious process.

Robotic equipment can be added to front-of-line processes too.

Depalletizing, loading, line charging or thermo forming packaging with an injection moulding machine are all possible options to improve packaging processes. Similarly, labelling, packing, palletizing and wrapping products — tasks that involve strenuous, laborious manual work — can all be achieved by automated systems.

Whether the facility is large or small, there are options to automate. From sensors that relay information to operators, to adding small robotic processes to existing machinery, automation cannot be overlooked in packaging.

How to Make Your Freight Service CarbonNeutral

Going carbon-neutral as quickly as possible is no easy feat, but it’s something that has to start happening everywhere. For freight business owners and others, it can be difficult to know where to start your carbon offset efforts. The following suggestions should help you make the case for pursuing carbon neutrality at your own company and uncover some of the potential cost savings you’ll get in the bargain.

Find out What Your Carbon Footprint Really Is The first step in making your freight service carbon-neutral is to get a better sense of how big your existing carbon footprint is. The EPA has a GHG emissions calculator for businesses and a carbon footprint calculator for everybody else. It’s more than possible to quantify this part of your company’s performance — and your findings will help determine how you proceed.

You have options if you want outside help determining how successful your carbon offset program is likely to be. The Gold Standard, The Verified Carbon Standard and The Climate Registry all provide third-party evaluations for companies that appreciate the effect of their environmental footprint and want practical guidance on reducing and eliminating it.

Learn About Offset Programs California has a healthy cap-and-trade system in place already, with an upper limit on greenhouse gas emissions that companies may emit. An addition to this program, they provided a new way for companies to alleviate some or all of their carbon footprint by “investing” in carbon-sequestering forestry projects instead of directly lowering their emissions.

This option provides a good model for other states to adopt and for companies to pursue of their own volition. The approach in California gives companies time and “breathing room” to ramp up their sustainability efforts, with an expanding portfolio of offset programs to take advantage of, while keeping their overall footprint within existing and future emissions limits.

For businesses and individuals everywhere, there’s the CarbonFund and similar partner programs. These programs offer ways for businesses to commit some of their earnings to carbon offset initiatives around the world, whether they’re under regulatory pressure to do so or not. There’s financial benefit here too, including improved optics and better PR in an age of rising eco-consciousness.

Provide Incentives for Combining Orders Near-immediate gratification may be the new normal, but it comes at a high environmental cost. One way companies can improve client retention and simultaneously reduce their emissions is to reward patience in the shipping process. For example, freight companies can provide discounts or other incentives if clients agree to delay what would have been a less-than-truckload (LTL) shipment and consolidate it with another order.

Some estimates say that the number of companies specializing in less-than-truckload freight will rise in the coming years. Part of the reason is the rising diversity of products available online. But with cloud business intelligence tools and the IoT in the picture, it’s easier than ever for companies to engage more closely with one another for cost and environmental savings — including in freight and the broader supply chain.

Consider Different Packaging Solutions For further carbon savings, freight services and their clients can work more closely with each other to find new packaging solutions.

For example, using differently shaped packaging products can make vehicle operations more efficient by allowing more product to be transported at a time.

Using recyclable and reusable materials in case packs and shipping cartons is another way to reduce one’s environmental and carbon footprints. Even making a different choice in pallet products, or participating in a pallet recycling and recovery program, can lead to environmental and budget savings in a lot of cases.

Switch to a Different Fuel Freight companies of all kinds rely on transportation, and transportation is the biggest source of carbon emissions in many parts of the United States and the world. No matter what you ship — and how you ship it — it may be time to reconsider the type of fuel you use to get it done.

Maersk provides one example of a freight company getting ahead of the renewable fuel curve. In 2020, the company will begin transitioning to a regulation-friendly low-sulfur fuel. Sulfur is associated with health complications as well as acid rain. The company has said that it hopes its example brings change elsewhere in the industry.

On a smaller scale, and in the heart of cities, delivery companies increasingly lean on electric vehicles, including electric bikes, to make last-mile deliveries in a way that doesn’t contribute to emissions, pollution or congestion. Big companies are driving change here too and helping to lower costs — including Amazon’s recent purchase of 100,000 electric vehicles.

Physical business locations, like distribution centers, have opportunities to change the fuel they run on too. Solar panels and turbines can offset some of the building’s energy needs and carbon footprint, for example.

Even natural gas is a relatively environmentally sound transition fuel for business locations that still run on oil heating or rely on coal-fired electric plants. Some freight carriers are investing in transitioning their vehicle fleets to running on natural gas too — a trend even smaller and last-mile freight carriers should watch for as it permeates the industry.

FEATURE STORY Insist on Full Transparency From Partners Maintaining visibility is one of the primary challenges in the modern logistics industry. Freight companies are one part of a supply chain, but they have the means to encourage change and lead by (an environmentally sound) example.

Wherever possible, work with clients, partners, vendors and contractors who surface their own carbon footprint and environmental data and make changes to address it.

Thanks to big data and data mobility, it’s only getting easier to “unsilo” the relevant business intelligence and find hidden ways to bring down energy and fuel usage, plan routes more efficiently and work more synergistically with partners in the supply chain. It has to start with wanting to find solutions, however.

What’s Hiding in Your Facility this Winter Something, or thousands of somethings, can be hiding in your facility this winter. They’re “overwintering” pests, and they can be quite a nuisance.

Overwintering – what does it actually mean? The dictionary definition is to last through the winter. Pests resort to a variety of self-preservation tactics pests use to survive the season and reemerge in the spring. Overwintering pests don’t reproduce, feed or develop indoors – they’re inactive, until they’re not.

Signs of Overwintering As long as temperatures stay cold, overwintering pests will remain inactive and out of sight. You won’t know you have overwintering pests. But, when temperatures warm, even for a few mild days, the pests “wake up” and move toward the warmth. Many of these pests won’t make it outside, which means they show up in your facility.

Pests flock to the sunny side of buildings; and when we say “flock,” we mean hundreds and even thousands of tiny bugs clustered together in a very visible way.

You may find these pest groupings near windows, doors or even artificial light. If your building is warmed by the sun, the artificial light may be enough to trick these pests into emerging from their hiding spots.

Pests that Overwinter Boxelder Bugs: About a half-inch long, boxelder bugs are black with orange or red markings including three stripes behind their head. Young or nymph boxelder bugs are bright-red when they first hatch and slowly change to the orange/black combination.

Cluster Flies: Cluster flies are just under a half-inch long, slightly larger than the common housefly. They have two large eyes with overlapping, transparent wings. They’re often grey on the underbelly and golden on top, giving off a golden sheen.

Lady beetles: Lady beetles, unlike ladybugs, are shiny, domeshaped insects. Most are red or orange with black spots.

Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs: These bugs are most common on the East Coast. Stink bugs can range from one half to three quarters of an inch long. They have a very distinct shield shape with a marbled body. Stink bugs have two long antenna and six legs. When bothered, they release their infamous foul odor.

How to Rid Yourself of Overwintering Pests Insecticides will not prevent the insects from emerging. They must be physically removed. We suggest a vacuum to suck up pests both dead and alive.

To kill these pests as they emerge in the spring, install a fly light, which will attract the pests looking for light and warmth.

To keep pests out, install door sweeps, seal cracks with high quality silicone caulk, and fill holes around drains and utilities with steel wool. Once these overwintering pests have made your warehouse their winter home, the only solution is physical removal and planning ahead for next winter.

7 Things a New Warehouse Manager Needs to Do in Their First 60 Days 1. Understand Your Department’s Goals and Objectives You probably discussed your department’s goals during your interview process, but it’s a good idea to review them in detail with your manager. These include goals not only for the warehouse but also for the company as a whole. Understanding how your department fits in the bigger picture will help you navigate day-today.

2. Meet with Your Direct Reports Hold an initial meeting soon after arriving. Your initial meetings with warehouse staff should be used to establish both how you intend to manage the department, how people will be measured, and firmly establish lines of communication.

For any warehouse manager, beginning a new job means starting on the right foot. Once you have the job, you need to demonstrate you’re making progress. Management needs to be comfortable that inventory, spare parts management, and order fulfillment are in good hands. The first sixty days on the job are critical and allow you to make a great first impression. Below are seven actions you should take to help you make sure your first steps are the right steps.

3. Study and Understand Your Physical Facilities Inventory, including raw material, finished goods, and MRO, constitute one of the most substantial investments for your company.

Your warehouse should be designed to handle your inventory types and may use a variety of material handling equipment, including AS/ RS systems, pallet racks, conveyor systems, and handling equipment.

How the facility is configured, how the inventory is processed, and how these systems are maintained is important.

Survey your facilities for quality of ROI and note areas of either safety or improved efficiencies you may want to address in the future.

Check inventory record accuracies and develop plans to improve if needed.

4. Get to Know your Products, Suppliers, Freight Handlers, and Customers In all the following cases, get to know both the people and the processes involved as soon as possible.

Depending on your specific situation, your warehouse may supply outside customers – businesses, companies, or individuals – or you may provide internal customers such as production departments, assembly lines or, even, other warehouses.

Your external customers may be located anywhere in the world, but it’s a good idea to introduce yourself to your point of contact within your customer’s organization. For internal customers, the same approach applies except a face-to-face meeting is best. Maintenance inventory management is often one of the most significant areas of both efforts and opportunities. You’ll want to be sure your spare parts management processes are as efficient as possible.

Current freight haulers should know what you and your company expect in terms of performance. Learn the key individuals in each organization. Your employer will likely have agreements in place when you arrive, but review and understand these and look for places to save money.

5. Understand the Legal Side of Warehousing It is not necessary to become a legal expert on warehouse operations, but it is a good idea to know some of the basic legal rules that govern warehouse operations. For example, at what point does legal title pass from the supplier to your company, how is damaged good handled, and what is the warehouse’s responsibility for

FEATURE STORY consignment inventory. Reviewing internal policies and procedures within the first sixty days shows a commitment to your new position.

6. Meet with Your Manager Initiate a meeting with your manager early in your first sixty days.

During the session, address the following: Gain any additional information you should know but didn’t learn during the interview process.

Develop an understanding of how you will be measured, what metrics you will be measured against, and how reporting will occur.

Establish method and frequency for communications.

Review your department’s budget as well as any plans for major projects that might affect your areas.

Discuss your plan for your first sixty days. Ensure your programs align with your manager’s expectations as well as the overall company goals. Later, refine your plan per this discussion.

Discuss other topics depending on your situation.

Conclusion Chances are you will have had several years of prior warehouse experience. Nevertheless, every company operates slightly differently so you can be sure you’ll find new processes and policies. During the first sixty days is the time to familiarize yourself with your new employer, the procedures, and people.

The first sixty days in a new position is a time to make a good impression, learn as much as possible, and see that your team is motivated. Your employer is placing a great deal of confidence and trust in your abilities, so it’s important to show them they selected the right candidate.

Northwest Crane Service Uses HydraSlide System for Transformer Project Oklahoma, U.S.-based Northwest Crane Service, L.L.C. (Northwest) utilized a 500-ton capacity Hydra-Slide HT500 heavy track hydraulic skidding system to install a 118,607-lb. transformer at a live power station in its home state recently (September). Northwest put the HT500 at the heart of a successful tender, awarded by a major U.S. freight forwarder. Two-decade veteran of Central Contractors Service in Chicago heads south A veteran of the ALL Family of Companies, T.J. Wicklander, has been named general manager of ALL Sunshine Crane Rental Corp. of Orlando, Florida. Wicklander brings two decades of crane experience forged in the highly competitive Greater Chicago area, where he served in a multitude of roles at Central Contractors Service, also an ALL branch. Wicklander began his career with the ALL family 19 years ago as a parts runner for Central Contractors Service.

Over the years, he also worked in operations and dispatch and spent a decade and a half in sales before most recently serving as manager of the Alsip, Illinois, location.

Toyota Commercial Finance Names New President and CEO Toyota Commercial Finance (TCF) recently named Mark Taggart as the company’s new President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Dave Crandall, TCF’s former President and CEO, is retiring after 33 years with Toyota.
