SAFETY CORNER

Thirteen Forklift Pedestrian Tips You Need to Know

Warehouse managers and professional manufacturers know the importance of safety in the supply chain — including safety training for equipment operators. Making sure pedestrians or visitors are equally prepared to coexist alongside heavy machines is another matter, and one that’s easier for operations teams to overlook. With that in mind, here are some tips for everybody involved in the process, from floor workers and vehicle operators to managers and other decision-makers. Forklift Safety Day falls on June 9 this year, so it’s a perfect time to study up. Forklift Safety Tips for Pedestrians For pedestrians, staying safe in the workplace comes down to staying grounded and engaged with your work environment. It’s also important to know how to interact with forklift, pallet truck and order picker operators when your paths cross. Here’s what pedestrians should know about staying safe in warehouses and industrial settings: • Be aware of your surroundings: This can’t be repeated enough. No matter how confident you are, always check and double-check before crossing a thoroughfare or entering an aisle or truck container. Use all of your senses to place yourself in a wider context and to pick out potential hazards before you cross paths. • Know what to look for: Part two of situational awareness involves knowing what behaviors to expect from moving forklifts and other vehicles. Flashing lights indicate the vehicle is powered on, while backup alarms indicate when an operator’s vision may be compromised. • Obey all posted traffic signs: Assuming the facility’s markings are up-to-date, there should be clearly delineated paths for pedestrians and vehicles to follow as they work. Pedestrians must obey all signage and not take shortcuts. 6

• Make eye contact with operators: This forklift pedestrian tip could save your life. Any time a footpath intersects with a vehicle traffic lane, all parties must come to a complete stop. Then, pedestrians must make eye contact with operators before assuming the right-of-way. • Clean as you go: Too many avoidable accidents come about because otherwise conscientious warehouse workers leave pallets, cartons or other tools and materials unattended or in a place others don’t expect them to be. Keeping the facility clean of clutter and obstacles helps keep the whole workforce safer and vehicles on surer “footing.” Forklift Safety Tips for Operators Likewise, operators must also hold up their end of the bargain when it comes to safety. Here are some pedestrian safety tips focused on equipment operators: • Know your equipment: Part of the responsibility rests on the employer when it comes to training on safe equipment operation. The rest depends on good judgment, an abundance of caution and knowing the piece of equipment inside and out. Knowing the turning radius of a forklift or its maximum lift capacity could save a life. • Take pre-start safety checks seriously: If your employer honors OSHA requirements, its fleet of forklifts and powered trucks undergoes regular inspection. This should include a pre-start checklist for the operator, covering visual inspections of wheels, hoses, controls and other parts. Complete this checklist every time and be sure not to use a machine if you have any reason to question its condition. Damaged lift trucks are a hazard for the operator and passersby alike. • Use safety features and equipment: Forklifts have safety features installed such as speed governors, load limits, travel arms and dead-man switches. Use these properly, and never tamper with or disengage them. • Wear protection and appropriate clothing: Personal safety equipment like gloves, brightly colored vests and eye protection keeps operators visible to pedestrians, in control of their machines and free from distractions that might impede their vision. Staying safe means using all of the tools available, as well as dressing in appropriate clothing that won’t get caught in machinery. • Honk at intersections: This should be second-nature for any trained forklift operator, but honking at every intersection is essential. So is making eye contact with

SAFETY CORNER CONTINUED any pedestrians in the area. Even if you think the coast is clear, there could be a hidden person or obstacle in one of your blind spots. Forklift Safety Tips for Warehouse Managers Frontline workers and managers have lots of opportunities to work together towards a safer workplace. Here are some top pedestrian forklift safety priorities for managers: • Train pedestrians for forklift safety: Warehouse managers don’t need to spend tons of time on this, but they should still commit to training pedestrians on moving around near and interacting with forklifts. Their time in the warehouse will see them cross paths — so take nothing for granted and reinforce safe work and travel habits early on. • Maintain floor markings: As mentioned earlier, pedestrians must follow all posted markings when it comes to the direction of travel and any areas that are offlimits to foot traffic. Managers should have a workflow in place for regularly inspecting these features and updating or refreshing them as often as needed. • Consider security and LO/TO: Security features can provide an additional layer of safety when it comes to

forklift fleet management. Steering wheel covers, padlocks and other lock-out/tag-out (LO/TO) devices ensure no unauthorized machine operation between or after shifts. The Benefits of Forklift Safety in Manufacturing Forklift Safety Day arrived this year on June 9, making this a great opportunity for warehouse managers to double-down on safety and make it even more of a priority in the coming month. Committing to situational awareness and good safety procedures and habits keeps pedestrians and operators alike safe and sound — and more confident and engaged in they’re work. Megan R. BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

Why Easy and Available isn’t Always Right Organizations have continually sought quick and easy solutions to some of their most challenging problems. Whether it be employee attrition, product adoption, generating new revenue streams or increasing organizational innovation, leaders look to find that “silver bullet” to turn things around. They seek out expert advice, examine competitor’s offerings, and explore plug-and-play technology platforms. Each of these often have the veneer of being a “guaranteed win”, where an abundance of “positive results” are lauded by a series of case studies and statistics. However, just because a solution is easy and available, doesn’t mean it will work for you. Firstly, many business problems are complex and multi-faceted. It’s usually not just a single problem causing the rub, but a series of problems that each affect each other, and usually have developed over time. Small changes throughout the company, culture and business environment that which have finally manifested into a problem that is visible and painful.

Secondly, addressing a problem takes time. If you break your leg, it needs time to heal. So a quick and easy fix is more than likely temporary and superficial – it doesn’t get to the heart of the problems, and they will re-emerge over the course of time. Solutions that are presented as immediate solutions are great for showing “action is being taken” but often lack lasting effectiveness. Thirdly, the definition and understanding of the core problems aren’t determined. Not getting documentation through your organization effectively and efficiently? Get a new software system. This is the traditional jump organizations make, but they overlook the most critical piece – why the problems are occurring. This determines which problems need addressing and how they manifest and create other issues. The easy and available software solution, for example, might not even be necessary – because the organization doesn’t really know what’s causing the problem in the first place. Fourthly, core problems might not be sexy, shiny, or interesting. Often times, it’s much flashier and

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT CONTINUED more visible to roll out a solution to a problem that has a bunch of bells and whistles. It’s more exciting to get a new exercise machine than to simply cut calories and take the stairs instead of the elevator. Core problems can be often low-cost or no-cost to solve but require behavior changes, along with persistence and consistency. Even though organizations often don’t like to spend money unnecessarily, they will inadvertently step over a dollar to pick up a dime if that quick solution seems more impressive than something more basic. Fifthly, deep problems might not have a clear and neat ROI. Things like organizational productivity or employee engagement are all awkward to measure and don’t connect directly to a number on the P&L. However, these softer things may be an integral problem or part of a root problem that need a solution. While they aren’t easy to measure, it is more often that “softer” things, including simple internal mentality (the way we’ve always done it) that are the root of the problem. All in all, it’s a longer and harder road to systematically examine your organization’s problems, find and implement truly sustainable solutions for lasting change. The easy fix is those that are visible – those that your competitors are doing or the latest technology trend. But it’s important to take the time to truly examine your problems, get in the weeds and examine the complexity of the situation. Don’t avoid the root cause because it’s uncomfortable. Because you might actually save a lot of money and time in the long run by taking the longer, slower road to the right answer. FEATURE STORY

The Importance of Staying Vigilant for Workplace Safety after Quarantine

As COVID-19 continues to run its course, businesses in many states will begin to reopen and allow employees to work onsite. However, just because quarantine is coming to an end, it doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t stay vigilant. Fears are beginning to die down, but the coronavirus is still running rampant, so worker safety must be the priority. While we must return to the basics of safety around the warehouse, there will be some new concerns to consider as well. Social distancing protocols will play a big part in our return to business, as will prioritizing employee wellness on a daily basis. Let’s look at how to be prepared in a post-quarantine work world. New Safety Measures As much as many of us will want things to go immediately back to how they were before the government shutdowns, some things at work will change. The biggest concern for many businesses is how their employees can still work effectively while also maintaining distance from one another. In a warehouse with close machinery, this can prove to be difficult. If you have a large workforce at your company, consider adding new and alternating shifts throughout the day where smaller groups can come in and work without being on top of each other. Between each shift, have your janitorial team clean and disinfect those workstations so each new shift can start fresh. You might also limit how many people can be in smaller areas like break and storage rooms at one time. It is necessary to keep in mind that the coronavirus is still active. Because of this, everyone in the workplace should be familiar with the signs of COVID-19. The most common symptoms include a high fever, shortness of breath, and fatigue. If someone feels the signs or believes someone else might have them, then they should 12

go to management. Workplaces should be proactive by temperature testing each employee before they come into the office and having those who show signs go see their doctor and then stay home until they are cleared. Finally, make sure everyone wears protective gloves and masks to avoid the possibility of contamination. Promote Mental Health and Wellness The coronavirus has had a big impact on the economy, and many people are excited to get back to work just to make ends meet. However, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t still nervous about the idea of getting sick or stressed about the fact that they must return to work while COVID-19 still exists. A workplace can answer these concerns and create a happier and healthier workforce by introducing wellness programs. A wellness program is a way that management can encourage employees to live healthier lives by offering things like gym memberships, healthy food in the break room, and smoking cessation programs. Some companies even have wellness programs tied to their health insurance programs, so if employees meet specific health thresholds, they can get credit toward their health insurance premiums. In general, healthier people are less stressed, so an employer who shows that they care can have better employees in the long run. Make sure that you have an open-door policy at work where employees can come to management if they have safety concerns about COVID-19 or any other problem. In fact, you should encourage your employees to bring their own ideas for health and wellness initiatives. Get everyone involved. Don’t Forget the Basics Because of the quarantine, it has probably been a while since your employees have been back to the workplace, so it is important to not only introduce these new initiatives but remind everyone of the safety basics. Before the employees start their shifts again, have a talk with them, and remind them of the necessary protocols, and ask if they have any questions. You could even send a safety video to their homes so they can view it on their own time and get reacquainted. Remember to add signage around the workplace wherever necessary, including around hazardous

Remind everyone of the proper way to lift heavy objects and safety protocols for using heavy machinery. Most of all, it is important to start slow and avoid overexertion. Everyone is excited to get to work, but they also need to regain the muscle memory required to do their jobs. If a worker comes back and they aren’t yet up to the challenge, then give them the time that they need. Most importantly, create a culture of safety, where everyone is encouraged to keep an eye on one another since you are all in this together. Work post-quarantine will be a learning experience for everyone, so take the time for the proper preparations. Start off right, and your business will thrive again.

Can I Add Another Level to My Pallet Rack Application?

It’s a question we hear a lot here at WPRP – Can I add a pallet rack level to my existing application? The answer isn’t always a clear-cut yes or no when it comes to adding more vertical storage space. There are several things to take into account and questions you have to answer before elevating your storage capacities. Will I Have To Account For Obstructions? This seems like a simple question, but it’s the first place we need to start when assessing vertical capacity. Sprinklers, heating and cooling systems, and rafters are just a few things that can hinder your expansion plans. Do a careful assessment of what’s on your ceiling before preceding. Can My Equipment Handle Another Level? Let’s say you have a 20-foot high ceiling with no obstructions to maximizing your vertical storage capacity. That’s a great start, but your next question should be whether or not you can reach that height. Make sure your forklift, or other equipment, can reach however high you want to store products. Investing without proper equipment can prove costly. Is It Legal? If you have existing pallet rack, you may have already had experience with obtaining permits and meeting code requirements. This question goes back to the original obstruction question. A common piece of compliance is the presence of a sprinkler system. In case of an emergency, your sprinkler must be effective, and that requires proper clearance. Standard spray sprinklers generally require 18 inches, while early suppression sprinklers generally require 36 inches. Is My Pallet Rack Structurally Sound? The beauty of pallet rack is that it is adjustable, and you 16

July 2020

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

can re-fit it to your liking. However, there are a couple of structural calculations that need to be taken into account before adding more vertical space. The first thing you should check is your frame capacity. Taking your maximum load per beam level and multiplying it by the number of total beam levels in that particular section do this. If you are adding levels, that number will grow. The second calculation you should double-check is your height-to-depth ratio. The standard for a single row of pallet rack is that the height of your top beam level is no more than six times the total depth. Any racking set-up that is at or below this ratio will provide the best stability in case of a collision, seismic activity, or any other forces that may cause damage or dislodgment. www.wprpwholesalerpallettack.com

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

Take Advantage of the Current Financial Mess

There’s no denying a societal crisis, especially a global one is a game changer in many ways, especially in the business community. Plenty of business people – entrepreneurs and otherwise – are dealing with real pain and life- and businessthreatening situations. You can only hope for the best. Yet business owners, especially those whose current and future prospects aren’t completely bad off, have the ability to take advantage of whatever opportunities have arisen in these strange times. That’s not to say you should prey on the misery of others, but there are some things you should be doing at this point that could pay off in the future. Here are five things to consider. 1. Restructure any debt you already have Ideally, you don’t want to be taking on any more debt these days if you can help it – and that might be a big “if ” for a lot of businesses. Still, there’s plenty of opportunity to reduce your monthly payments. Considering how life is always changing, lenders might view your business vastly differently now. For example, perhaps you’re generating increased amounts of collateral, cash flow or credit. Even with a pandemic slowdown, maybe your products or services are still in demand. Refinancing should be on your table. Just by shaving a percentage point or two is going to cut your monthly debt service, which will put more money in your coffers. And in these troubled times, cash is king more than ever. 2. The SBA works Unlike in the past, you might now be eligible for a Small Business Administration-backed loan – or a better conventional bank loan. 18

The SBA got a lot of attention because of the CARES Act and the Payroll Protection Program, but it’s the agency’s regular lending programs that should interest you. Do note that in its regular programs, the SBA doesn’t make the loans – it only backs them for a select group of lenders. The flagship 7(a) program offers low rates and fees, comes with counseling and education if so desired and generous repayment terms. In addition, lower down payments, flexible requirement regarding overhead and no collateral may also figure into the equation 3. Loyalty is nice when it comes to dogs, but necessarily for lending At the very least, you need to conduct a debt review to consider financing options as they stand now. That said, you have to be careful. Your current lender won’t want you to go, especially if the current arrangement is lucrative in their favor. They may try scare tactics, claiming you’ll lose flexibility if you change lenders or that you may risk running out of money. Resist that pressure. Think of it this way: What’s more important – your business or your lender? Your lender is certainly looking out for itself first. You must, too. And remember, it’s always possible your lender could rework your deal, which could save you from awkward moments. 4. Loans (and loan restructuring) aren’t always the answer More capital isn’t always the answer. Sometimes, it’s better to make do with less. Entrepreneurs generally don’t want to scale back their operations because they’re too worried about growth. But few businesses grow in a straight line. There are ups and downs along the way and now you might just want to minimize the damage. Steps you might take include deferring capital expenditures or deferring or reducing lease payments and non-critical vendor payments, if possible. By reaching out proactively to landlords, vendors and other contractor holder, you might be able to craft some breathing ground. On the unpleasant side, you could think about furloughing some employees or even pay cuts (if you choose the latter, make sure you cut your pay as well).

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT CONTINUED 5. Give yourself some credit This advice – which isn’t heeded nearly often enough — applies for both when your company is doing well and when it’s struggling. You should open a line of credit. A credit line gives you peace of mind because you have a ready reserve to tap. And it gives you a great deal of flexibility. Say you get a short-term opportunity to buy a stockpile of a key raw material at a ridiculously low price. With a credit line, you can take advance. Remember that you only pay interest on a credit line if you borrow from it – and there’s no requirement that you do that. The credit line can sit there untouched, if need be. In summary, now’s a time when your goal may well be simply to ride out the next few months. That’s fine. Yet riding out the next few months isn’t the same as doing nothing. By being proactive, you can not only make the most of a bad time, but position yourself for the inevitable rebound. Portable, Vehicle-Mounted HandWashing Station

Parcel Unloader Empties Contents from Gaylords and Large Containers

The CDC lists hand-washing first under its guidelines for practicing good hygiene. However, until now, it has been difficult for vehicle operators, work crews and others functioning in isolated conditions to observe what the CDC calls “one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others.” The black or translucent white water-dispensing are made of durable, virgin polypropylene with an additive that makes them resistant to UV rays. An integrated removable soap dispenser serves as the cap to the filling port, and a separate cap is also available. www.nationalfleetproducts.com

It tilts loads to 110˚ to provide controlled emptying of contents. A pan-style platform sits flush with the floor when lowered, for loading with a hand pallet truck. www.southworthproducts.com

Prevent Rack Damage and Keep Flue Spaces Clear The Pallet Guide and Pallet Guide/Stop are designed to prevent potential damage to crossbars and rack corners by creating a guide for pallets. The Pallet Guide/Stop also keeps flue spaces clear and prevents damage to walls behind rack. They are available in 42” and 48” and mount flush to rack using the included hardware so that nothing ‘catches’ on the hardware. www.save-ty.com

Warehouse Expansion for TVH America’s Headquarters

We worked to ensure this expansion was done in the most environmentally conscious way possible. One of the most impactful energy saving measures introduced in the building expansion was the installation of solar panels on the roof of our new warehouse space. These solar panels will significantly reduce electrical costs and the impact we as a company have on the environment. The projected CO2 emissions reduction in the first year is estimated to be nearly 3,495,000 lbs. Over the next 25 years, the total projected reduction in CO2 emissions is estimated to be over 79,000,000 lbs, reducing greenhouse gas emissions while improving quality of life and environmental standards. The new warehouse expansion showcases an extensive use of energy saving measures throughout the interior of the facility as well. These measures include new LED lighting system, which will consume roughly 75% less energy, while lasting significantly longer compared to your traditional, florescent lights. Water conserving fixtures will decrease the prevalence of water waste, lowering TVH’s environmental impact. New energy saving HVAC controls and equipment will allow for more consistent temperatures at a more efficient, energy saving rate. www.tvh.com www.mhnetwork.com
