Safety First

Six Road Construction Work Zone Safety Tips for the Inexperienced If you work in road construction, you’re probably already well-aware of the risks of the job. Unfortunately, the roadway is one of the most dangerous work environments for maintenance and construction professionals. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHA), over 27,000 people lost their lives in crashes occurring in construction and maintenance work zones between 1982 and 2017.

But there is good news to report, too. Overall worker and traffic deaths are on the decline, hopefully paving the way for fewer roadway fatalities in the future. In order to prevent these tragedies, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), local governments, and independent organizations have created standards and guidelines to help keep roadway workers safer. Implementing guidelines set forth by these organizations, as well as following these work zone safety tips, can help you stay safe while performing essential roadway maintenance and construction. New to Road Construction? Follow These Tips If you’re new to working in road construction or maintenance, be sure to follow these basic safety tips. In time, these concepts will become like second nature to you, but it’s important that you have them down before heading out into any road work environment. It’s always good for seasoned work zone employees to have a safety refresh as well. 1. Do Not Skimp on Your Hi Vis Apparel – It is critical that all roadway workers wear the proper high vis clothing. These garments feature highly fluorescent 10

fabrics and retroreflective striping to increase visibility in all light conditions. The idea is to ensure that roadway workers are highly visible from every angle so that motorists and operators of heavy machinery are able to clearly identify them. • Wear high visibility apparel that’s certified to the ANSI/ISEA 107 standard. This means that the manufacturer has followed a set of rigorous guidelines and undergone testing to ensure that their apparel meets certain criteria of quality and safety. • Know which type and performance class you need. The ANSI/ISEA has created a specific class of high visibility clothing for various types of workers. Offroad (Type O) workers don’t need as much visibility as roadway (Type R) workers, for example. Knowing the recommended class for your specific worksite can help keep you safe. • Have high visibility apparel for all seasons. Not having the right apparel for the weather can cause gaps in usage. For example, when it’s hot out, it can be tempting to skip the hi vis gear if all you have on hand is a heavy jacket. Make sure you have high visibility options for every season to ensure that you’re not only safe but also comfortable on the job. 2. Create and Mark Work Zones – It’s important that work zone employees stay within a confined area on busy roadways. These areas should always be properly marked and delineated so that motorists and fellow workers may easily identify them. Take special care to set up high visibility barriers—such as cones and barrels—to keep work zones safe for activities such as storing materials, directing traffic, and parking road maintenance vehicles. 3. Pay Close Attention to Your Surroundings – Making a mental note of any potential hazards or risks in your surrounding areas will help keep you alert and aware of dangers. At the same time, roadway workers must be engaged and aware of their surroundings at

AN ESSENTIAL PART OF YOUR FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM

T

oday’s warehouse fire protection systems include more than just

pipes and sprinklers. When the products being stored include highly flammable items such as plastics, aerosols, liquors or oils, fire barriers may be required inside the racking structure. Solid steel rack decking and flat sheet accessories from DACS make effective fire or heat barriers in warehouse environments. They can be used on storage racks horizontally or vertically to block the spread of fire, or to capture heat for in-rack sprinkler activation.

Safety First continued all times because things change rapidly in this working environment. Paying close attention to traffic patterns and weather can help prevent a variety of serious incidents. 4. Be Careful Around Equipment – Indeed, the most common fatal injuries at road construction sites are caused by exactly what you’d imagine—vehicles striking pedestrians. But being struck by a piece of equipment is also a serious risk, as this type of accident accounts for nearly 10 percent of road construction fatalities. Because we are especially concerned about keeping our eyes on traffic, we sometimes overlook the other risks of the job site. Highvisibility clothing and staying aware at all times can curb the likelihood of these incidents. 5. Master Hand Signals and Devices – Among the more fundamental pieces of safety equipment at roadway worksites are hand signals and traffic signs. Even if you’re not a flagger and don’t intend to ever direct traffic, you should know the proper hand-signaling procedures, including how to use sign paddles and flags, as well as how to signal to traffic without any explicit signage or paddles.

6. Take Care of Your Health – Though it’s unrealistic 100 percent of the time, it’s critical that you do not go to work when you’re tired, hungry, or thirsty to the point where you can’t focus on your surroundings. Unfortunately, exhaustion can seriously impair your ability to make sound decisions and stay alert when you need to be, so it’s considered a serious workplace hazard. Do your best to get the recommended daily amount of sleep each day and keep yourself on a consistent eating and drinking schedule. Remember to bring snacks and water to work with you each day. Stay Aware, Stay Smart Despite the number of road construction fatalities each year, the safety precautions we take can make a massive difference. In addition to wearing the right high visibility apparel and learning the basic safety procedures, roadway workers must possess the ability to stay alert, focused, and responsive at all times. Follow these tips and guidelines to ensure that you’re as safe as possible while working on our roadways.

Warehouse Solutions

Here’s How to Overcome Nine Warehouse Problems

The global economy wouldn’t be able to function without warehouses. Virtually every industry relies on supply chains, which need warehouses, so these facilities must run as efficiently as possible. Still, problems persist even in the largest and most productive companies. If you’re a warehouse manager, you’re likely already aware of the need for improvement. Seeing how to move forward isn’t always clear, though. Warehouse solutions typically aren’t as evident as the problems they fix. With that in mind, here are nine common warehouse problems and how to overcome them. 1. Worker Safety The warehousing industry has an injury rate of 4.1 per 100 full-time workers. As such, safety should be a leading concern for any facility. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of ways you can reduce your workplace injury rate. Perhaps the most effective step to take is to hold regular and thorough safety training sessions. Many, if not most, accidents are the result of human error. Another crucial step is to ensure only specially trained and certified employees can operate machinery like forklifts. Requiring machine check-ins will also hold these workers accountable. 2. Inaccurate Inventory Records One of the most pervasive and impactful issues warehouses face is inaccurate or incomplete inventory records. When there’s a discrepancy between what you think you have and what you do, it leads to disruptions and delays. The answer here is to remove the human element as much as possible from inventory recordkeeping. Inaccuracies tend to arise out of mistakes in manual data collecting and reporting. Using an automated 14

March 2021

Material Handling Network

www.MHNetwork.com

warehouse management system (WMS) can help you avoid these errors. Look for a solution that tracks inventory through as many points as possible, from shipment arrivals to shelving to order fulfillment. 3. Supply Chain Visibility Many warehouse solutions fail to account for outside factors, like the timeliness of your shipping partners. Shipping delays can add 20% to your shipping costs from things like fuel expenses and lost customers. Like with inventory management, the answer to this problem lies in data. If your company controls its own shipping, implement IoT technology in your vehicles and adopt fleet management software. That way, you can see where all shipments are in real-time and adjust accordingly. If you use a third party, look for partners that provide more transparency, and consider switching companies if your current partner doesn’t. 4. Poor Space Optimization If you hope to become as efficient as possible, you’ll need to make the most of your space. Poor optimization can lead to safety hazards and make it difficult for employees to navigate. Maximizing your space will fix these issues and enable you to host more inventory or employees in the same building. One of the first steps you should take is choosing the right containers for your space and function. Next, use your WMS to see where your most picked items are and rearrange them so they’re closer together. You can also collect data from other areas of the warehouse to see if there are any redundancies you can combine into one workflow. 5. Slow Picking Times Picking is the core of warehouse operations, yet many facilities don’t take as many steps as they could to improve it. Many track employees’ rates and reward better times, but stop there. You can further fix this common warehouse problem by embracing technology. Depending on your budget and inventory, you may be able to implement automated picking solutions. You can also use data analytics to find the most efficient routes based on frequently picked items and warehouse layout. Incorporating technologies like conveyor belts and lifts can help employees move products more efficiently, too.

Warehouse Solutions continued 6. Damaged Inventory If you want your returns to be as high as possible, you’ll have to avoid inventory damage. While there are tax and insurance protections for damage from natural events, those don’t cover product loss from mistakes. Many things can damage your inventory, and most of them result from a lack of care. Employees trying to raise their picking rates or machines moving too fast can lead to product loss. The solution here is to enable more efficiency without needing workers and equipment to move more quickly. Focus on reorganizing shelves and workflows over increasing speed. You can also replace old machines with newer, gentler ones. 7. Fluctuating Demand All warehouse solutions should consider how demand fluctuates between seasons in this industry. Around the holidays, delivery rates typically surge 30%-40%, sometimes surpassing that. Underpreparation can lead to delays, and overcompensation can lead to postseason surplus and losses. The traditional solution to this problem is to hire seasonal workers, but that doesn’t always work.

Automation is typically more reliable, as it involves just a one-time expense since you can reuse the same robots year-to-year. You should also use data analytics software to predict seasonal spikes so you can prepare accordingly. 8. Labor Shortages The logistics industry faces a labor shortage as demand far outgrows the number of incoming workers. Since you may have trouble acquiring human talent in the future, your best course of action may be to maximize current workers’ efficiency. Automation is the inevitable solution here. Picking robots, autonomous pallet jacks and automatic packaging systems are all growing in availability and efficacy. You shouldn’t aim to replace your workforce with robots but rather supplement them with automation. You can also improve the workers’ efficiency by establishing reward programs. If you honor productivity and loyalty, you’ll encourage your current employees and attract new ones. 9. Inefficient Paperwork One often overlooked warehouse problem is inefficiency in administrative work. Scheduling, bill management and document filing all take time. These low-level tasks can

Don’t Let Common Warehouse Problems Hinder Your Growth You can solve many warehouse problems by implementing modern technology. If you embrace data and automation, you can turn your facility into a far more efficient machine. Every facility has unique needs and resources, so optimal warehouse solutions may likewise differ. Still, these answers have proven track records across various sectors, so you can trust in their efficacy. You may not have an issue with all of these, but chances are you can benefit from at least a few. Emily Newton is the Editor-in-Chief of Revolutionized Magazine. The rise of exoskeletons in logistics Technological advancements have made exosuits more affordable The approachability and adaptability of exosuits are major drivers behind the popularity growth in logistics and other industries. Facilities are using this new class of non-battery powered, non-motorized exoskeletons to help create a safer workspace and combat the costs associated with overexertion and repetitive motion injuries. Accidents Happen continued pulleys, springs, and aluminum tubing. The HeroWear Apex, which only weighs 3.4 pounds and is largely fabric, has the look and feel of wearing an empty backpack. Some users often ask about the risk of muscle atrophy, but it’s important to remember: modern exosuits are not turning workers into human forklifts. Passive exosuits help workers in the lifting, bending, and reaching during a shift. Those 25-pounds boxes are still being lifted and moved. However, exosuits might make it feel like they’re only lifting a 15-pound box – that’s still plenty of work, but it makes a significant difference over the course of a workday and a career. In fact, muscle atrophy can occur when there is too little or too much muscle activation. That means overexertion can lead to muscle atrophy, as well. The purpose of exosuits is to keep workers in that healthier “sweet spot.” Exosuits help workers keep up with demand Technology has forever changed the way work is done and nowhere is that more evident than in the world of logistics. But there will always be active workers lifting, bending, and reaching.

Because of the rise in their popularity, there is a wealth of information available about how exosuits could be a practical and simple solution for logistics operations. For example, ExoskeletonReport.com is a valuable resource for those interested in learning more. Those images of exoskeletons allowing people to jump tall buildings or give them superhuman strength are great for a box-office blockbuster. However, the truth is exosuits are actively being used to help workers do their job safer, longer, and more efficiently. And the benefits aren’t just realized on the production floor. They allow workers to head home after a shift with more energy for whatever they enjoy outside of work. To put it simply, exoskeletons don’t only help workers do their jobs better. Now it’s never been easier to implement exosuits to help businesses succeed and help workers live better. Matt Marino is the Director of Ergonomics and Human Factors at HeroWear. He can be reached at mmarino@herowearexo.com. Matt has been an active member of the ASTM F48 Committee on Exoskeletons since its 2017 inception, and he is a founding partner of the ASTM Exo Technology Center of Excellence.

Business Management

Generic Leads Are Not Leads

Multiple times a day, I receive emails from companies claiming they “provide tons of qualified leads” for businesses. Here’s one recent example: [Name,] “Since finding and closing new business is more important than ever for companies to survive a global changing economy, how is [company] fine-tuning your lead gen process to generate more qualified meetings?” “Do you have 15 minutes to review your current lead gen strategy for [company] to see if we can help?” [Lead Gen Company] Sounds magical, right? While every company is always seeking to grow their business, it’s quite interesting that a Lead Generation company sends out a generic email to a non-qualified mailing list about their services, claiming this is their specialty. Even more interesting is the fact that their message is not tailored to their audience, communicates understanding about the business they are targeting, nor provides a compelling narrative about their *oh so special and unique* approach. However, there are everyday companies that take this approach that diminishes not only their credibility but also their likelihood of actually getting any qualified leads. When we explore ways to generate new business, the first and most important thing is to understand whom you want to target, and why. Why is this audience segment important? How do you address their challenges and needs in a unique and different way?

24

March 2021

Material Handling Network

www.MHNetwork.com

If we can’t answer these questions yourself, you’re already behind, and no lead generation company with their wonderful lists will help. It’s like throwing spaghetti at a wall. If you really want to generate quality leads, you need to first understand the specific customers facing specific challenges. Not the generic persona-based customers, but real-life customers. Talk (not email, not survey) with your current customers. What new issues are they facing? Why are they facing them? What keeps them up at night? Even if these issues aren’t things your company might not directly address, they will be the source of new ideas. Tangental things that relate to what you do. Do they get frustrated with layers of communication when they work with vendors? Even if they don’t directly voice it, you might be one of their sources of frustration. Mere exposure has caused them to become acclimated to your processes. Can you do things simpler, better, easier that saves them time, money, and effort? Now you have a story. A relatable problem in which customers can identify they need help with. Something tangible. You might argue “well, lead generation is a problem!”, but you can pick up a list of names and emails from anywhere. Likely for free. Lead generation isn’t the problem. The problem is identifying and knowing who has a problem that you uniquely solve. So for the email I just received while writing this article: “Are you open to see what’s out there that could support your lead generation efforts? An initial call might be a good idea for us to discover if there’s potential for us to work together in gaining new clients for your firm. What do you think? Would Wednesday at 3 pm est be a good time? if yes, please provide your direct line.” Yeah, I’ll pass. If I do the work right on my end, the job is already done. Industry News The Crosby Group invests in Verton Technologies

Mitsubishi Logisnext Americas Announces Changes For Americas Region

The Crosby Group, a global leader in lifting, rigging, and load securement hardware, today announced that it has completed a significant investment in Verton Technologies (“Verton”). Australian-based Verton has developed and commercialized disruptive advancements in load orientation technology that remove the need for human held tag lines in lifting applications. These innovations play a critical role in improving the safety and productivity of global lifting operations. The Crosby Group and Verton will collaborate in the market to accelerate the adoption of this game-changing load orientation technology. By leveraging The Crosby Group’s global footprint, Verton will bring an elevated level of safety to an increasing number of workers. Robert Desel, CEO of The Crosby Group, said: “We are thrilled to partner with Verton in this rapidly growing space. This investment is a perfect strategic fit due to our common end user base and our shared values of safety, reliability and innovation.” www.thecrosbygroup.com

Product Showcase MagnaShear™ Maintenance-Free, No-Adjustment Crane Brakes Unlike dry brakes, oil shear technology includes a layer of automatic transmission fluid between the brake disc and the drive plate. As the fluid is compressed, the fluid molecules shear – thus imparting torque to the other side. This torque transmission causes the rotating discs to decelerate against the stationary plates bringing them down to stop. Since most of the work is done by the fluid particles in shear, wear is virtually eliminated. Elimination of wear also eliminates the need for adjustments which are common for dry braking systems. www.forcecontrol.com

Spring-Assisted Folding Aluminum Ramp The new ramp comes standard with Link’s unique spring assist and wheel kit. The spring-assist makes deploying and retracting the ramp simple and easy, requiring only about 50 pounds of force to be exerted for either operation. The ramps wheel kit helps transition the ramp more smoothly when deploying it on a wide variety of surface angles and materials. “All Link folding ramps are so easy and simple to use, even novice workers can be up and running in no time,” Blake said. “They’re also lightning-fast to operate and can be unfolded and folded back into their vertical, low-profile storage position in less than 10 seconds.” www.linkmfg.com

Push/ pull handles on both ends of the cart are positioned at comfortable ergonomic height. www.creform.com

Emerging Technologies in Supply Chain The supply chain industry is evolving to enable and sustain the rapid demand of goods and services globally. The competitive difference between companies in the industry is increasingly based on real-time data and intelligent analytics that enable optimal managerial decisions. These are being driven by emerging technologies, in the form of robotics and smart computing – which are the focus of the latest FlyWare E-Book on supply chain automation. Innovations like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Robotics and Blockchain, when combined with SCM (Supply Chain Management) are beginning to transform the distribution of goods at an unprecedented scale. The greatest value of these technologies is realized when they are adopted together, thus rapidly adding business value across supply chain operations. Launch of new Aisle Master Order Picker: Aisle Master-OP The NEW Aisle Master-OP (AME-OP) is a pioneering stand-on electric powered model that combines the advantages of a narrow aisle articulated forklift and an order picker for versatile operation in warehousing applications. The development of this model was influenced by customer feedback – as has often been the case with Combilift’s innovations – as well as the recent soaring growth of e-commerce. “Customers already using the Aisle Master for space saving, storage and efficiency in their warehouse asked if we could redevelop the Aisle Master to meet their ever-growing demand for order picking customized orders”, said Combilift CEO Martin McVicar. “Before we officially launch any new model, Combilift carry out extensive field testing on customer’s sites, this was the case with the Aisle Master-OP”, said Martin McVicar. www.aisle-master.com
