Evolving power
the freezer the entire time, Schneider said. Now with the learning curve in place, Schneider said conversations with customers are often about standardization, lead times and quality metrics.
“It’s the beginning of a mature phase of technology and adoption. Orders are bigger. People are switching entire fleets rather than small trials,” she said. Schneider cited a recent white paper by CALSTART showing lithium-ion overtaking lead acid in new vehicle sales and forklift sales in 2026. “It shows the adoption of lithium-ion year-overyear growth at about 30 percent,” Schneider said.
Battery options continue to grow and develop to meet industry needs in material handling
As material handling companies power up to meet the needs of customers, equipment like batteries and chargers are often a top calculation. Some in the lithium-ion battery industry say knowledge of the technology has grown rapidly.
“We’ve gotten to an inflection point where understanding and awareness of lithium-ion batteries is high enough that the discussion is no longer about value proposition. Generally, people understand the value,” said Robin Schneider, director of marketing at Green Cubes Technology.
The company “develops and manufactures a complete portfolio of modern electrification power solutions, including the market-leading Lithium SAFEFlexbattery,” according to the company website. Green Cubes’ solutions “allow industrial customers to transition away from fossil fuels and legacy power sources such as lead-acid and internal combustion engines,” the site said.
Previously, lithium ion was used more in niche, early adopter applications like cold storage facilities where a Li-ion powered battery would have strong capabilities of providing power while staying in
Mining for lithium
Asked about the practices of mining for lithium ion, Schneider said the subject does come up frequently as a concern and added that there will be supply chain constraints as the industry grows. “Eventually, supply will be developed to meet the demand. There will be correction and balance over time,” Schneider said.
There is a key distinction between the more wellestablished chemistry of nickel magnesium (NMC) cobalt and the lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) chemistry used in lift truck batteries, according to Schneider. The NMC combination is used in laptops, cell phones and the majority of electric vehicles, she said.
Lithium is fairly abundant, however the NMC mining process is “very environmentally unfriendly,” said Schneider, who said most of the supply mines are based in Africa and are owned by China. “They’re also toxic,” she added.
The LFP combination uses iron, which Schneider said is “readily abundant in most of the world.” “There’s a drive for the entire battery industry to go forward with the LFP chemistry,” she said, noting Green Cubes batteries employ this chemistry.
LITHIUM SAFEFLEX BATTERIES AND CHARGERS
Maintenance free Li-ion batteries increase safety and efficiency with a lower total cost than lead acid.
High-frequency chargers with CAN communication, voltage detection and multiple outputs enable fast charging with lower utility costs.
“LFP has a couple of advantages; its life cycle is inherently much longer than NMC. It is safer in the sense that if you have did have a rare thermal event with LFP the worst the peak temperature is much lower,” Schneider said. The disadvantage of LFP is energy density, according to Schneider. “It takes up more space than NMC, but that is not a big issue in an industrial truck,” she said.
In addition to batteries, Green Cubes has developed chargers, which Schneider said includes “the highest efficiency and smallest charger” in the market. She said a lot of customers are interested in a seamless system of batteries and chargers.
In the near future, the company is monitoring the work of the California Air Resources Board, an organization that oversees the state’s efforts for air pollution control, including proposals of electrification of internal combustion engines, according to Schneider.
The state legislature is currently in the comment period of legislation that may phase out Class 4 and Class 5 lift trucks between 2026 and 2035, according to Schneider. “It’s yet to be seen exactly how that is going to phase out,” she said.
Exploring power options
Some in the industry are seeing interest in diverse power solutions. At EnerSys there are three battery technologies available to address all needs and budgets, according to the company website.
The business has developed modeling software that “eliminates guesswork and can use application data for actionable intelligence to identify the ideal battery and charger combination based on a customer’s specific operations and goals,” the site said.
EnerSys offers Ironclad® traditional flooded lead acid batteries as well as “virtually maintenancefree NexSys® PURE Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) and NexSys® iON Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, according to the business website. In addition, the
company offers a range of charger technologies including a new wireless option for AGVs, the site said.
Harold Vanasse, Senior Director of Marketing, Motive Power Global, for the company, said like any newer technology, there is an adoption curve for lithium ion. “Flooded lead acid has been around for a long time,” he said, noting that for many EnerSys customers, lead acid technology is still preferred. But interest in maintenance free technology is strong and varies, so he said the consultations EnerSys can provide are key. Vanasse said the company’s experts help size up what technology will work for a client, what the budget considerations are and more.
Chris Behan, Senior Marketing Manager, Motive Power Americas, for EnerSys, said the company will gather equipment energy usage data as well as shift and break patterns for charging to paint a complete picture.
All of that information is input into the EnerSys simulation software, to help customers make fully informed decisions of power needs, according to Behan. The company’s offering of a one-stop shop for battery and charger needs is also valued by its customers, according to Vanasse.
“We design and make our own chargers as well. It’s very much a closed-loop system. Everything is designed to work optimally together,” he said.
Industry trends
Vanasse said the shortage of labor, cost of labor and automation remain top considerations for EnerSys partners. Behan said an interesting trend has also been the number of customers wanting to move away from the costs and time associated with battery maintenance.
For some, thin plate pure lead is a good option if they don’t require the full power of the Li-ion option, Behan said. “We try to right-size the power system for the application,” he said, noting some
operations, like a 24-7 facility, can benefit from the advantages of lithium ion batteries that are designed to recharge fast during break periods.
“Another trend you see is automation,” said Vanasse, who said maintenance free TPPL and lithium-ion batteries often match up well with such efforts as businesses seek options to fill labor needs.
Sustainability is another top-of-mind subject for EnerSys partners, according to Vanasse.
Behan agreed, noting that for those looking for water savings, considering different battery options may help hit those goals. “Our NexSys solutions never have to be watered,” he said.
Vanasse said he envisions the lithium-ion technology will continue to evolve over the coming years, with the cells becoming more energy dense. “We’re going to see an evolution in those chemistries,” he said.
EnerSys recently debuted its wireless charging options, which both Vanasse and Behan said are of interest to companies looking to drive up efficiencies with automated equipment.
In the near future, the EnerSys sales team are looking forward to continuing to apply customer data to hone down what is best for each operation. And Vanasse said the company will likely release the next generation of that software in a year or so. “We’re still continue to evolve thin plate pure lead and lithium-ion products,” he said, encouraging material handling companies to look through their various power options and use data to help make the best choice.
“Have that conversation with us,” he said. “There is no one-size-fits all solution and we don’t want customers to guess at what they need. The costs of a bad decision are very high.”

Blocks the Spread of FireActivates the Sprinkler System
Today’s warehouse fire protection systems include more than just pipes and sprinklers. When the products being stored include highly flammable items such as plastics, aerosols, liquors or oils, fire barriers may be required inside the racking structure.
Solid steel rack decking and flat sheet accessories from DACS make effective fire or heat barriers in warehouse environments.
They can be used on storage racks horizontally or vertically to block the spread of fire, or to capture heat for in-rack sprinkler activation.

Searching for Safety: Boost safety and efficiency in processing applications with diagnostic tools
A vibrating screen is the heart of a mineral processing operation. It’s the deciding factor in whether or not your product meets your specifications. Deadlines and quotas might tempt producers to overload the screen while attempting to increase their bottom line. However, this contributes to downtime due to premature wear and might create a safety hazard for workers near an unbalanced screen. And just as monitoring a heart rate is essential for optimal health, the same idea applies to a mineral processing operation.
Think of manufacturers as an operation’s cardiologist, there to diagnose and remedy operating issues before they become a safety hazard or halt production altogether. They provide producers with the necessities to streamline an operation and minimize downtime or injury. And, these days, that starts with diagnostics.
Like a house call from a doctor, onsite diagnostics enhance mineral processing operations through vibration analysis service programs without having to transport the equipment into a shop. These programs offer producers insight into their screen’s performance to achieve optimum efficiency and ensure minor operating issues don’t become major hazards. Certain manufacturers offer service programs that provide producers the opportunity to monitor screening performance in real-time using wireless technology. These advanced systems offer a hands-off approach to analyzing screening equipment by allowing operators to stand out of harm’s way — from a potentially off-balanced screen — when performing diagnostics.
In addition to safety, wireless technology offers operators remote, real-time monitoring, which ensures equipment is properly maintained and running optimally. This means less risk that strain is placed on the screen or other parts of the operation to maintain production quota. The increased efficiency and enhanced safety is the healthy choice for all areas of the operation.
Sound interesting? Here’s how it works:
It all begins with a close relationship with the OEM and is enhanced by real-time equipment monitoring. Finding a key partnership where an OEM approaches the application as a solution provider rather than an equipment supplier is key to productivity and success. If your OEM isn’t providing consultative advice and real-time, proactive monitoring, it might be time to seek another solution.
A key aspect of safety is having equipment that runs at peak performance and knowing when and how to maintain it. The more time spent fixing and maintaining the equipment heightens the risk of injury. That is where real-time monitoring comes in handy.
An advanced vibration analysis program specifically monitors the health of vibrating screens. That real-time feedback ensures optimized screen performance and equipment durability. The hands-free system uses a wireless, industrialgrade tablet computer and eight tri-axial sensors to detect abnormalities the human eye cannot, such as a hairline crack in a side plate or an uneven or twisting motion. Even the slightest irregularities can result in diminished performance, decreased efficiency, and safety risk for the operator.
The programs use wireless accelerometers to detect any irregularities, allowing operators to stand as far as 300 feet out of harm’s way. Each sensor attaches to key places on a machine to send 24 channels of data to the tablet via Wi-Fi — illustrating the machine’s orbit, acceleration, deviations, and more.
After the sensors record the data, trained and experienced engineers review, study and interpret the results through the system’s database. This provides the engineers and producer with a detailed report of any concerns that might diminish productivity or risk operator safety.
If an irregularity is detected, the service team travels to complete on-site service, which keeps producers on top of preventative maintenance and ensures a safe operation that runs at maximum efficiency and lower risk. Some vibration analysis systems store each machine’s historical data, which allows for quick comparison over time and easy troubleshooting.
More and more often producers rely on diagnostics for safer work environments and a streamlined operation. Its hands-off approach ensures a healthy operation, which helps producers efficiently meet deadlines and provide quality products for their customers.

From Bottlenecks to Breakthroughs: Mastering warehouse robotics head-on
The future - or rather, the present - of warehouse management is undeniably intertwined with robotics. However, the journey towards this automation is not without its hurdles. It's crucial to understand that while robotics can revolutionize warehouse logistics, it can also lead to significant costs, inefficiencies and disappointment if not implemented correctly. Here are some key insights that can serve as a guide to avoiding common pitfalls in warehouse robotics.
Preventing Bottlenecks in Automation
The primary goal of warehouse robotics is to expedite the product fulfillment cycle. However, partial automation of processes without a holistic reengineering approach can lead to new bottlenecks. For instance, if you automate picking to double your output, but your packing process remains manual and slow, you've merely shifted the bottleneck, not eliminated it. The key is to consider the entire process and understand the implications of automation on the overall workflow.
Designing for Automation
The extent of automation in your warehouse should align with your overall design and future growth plans. Whether you aim for full automation or prefer a hybrid model, it's essential to consider the impact on all parts of your operation. Remember, the efficiency of your process is only as good as its slowest component.
Addressing the Mundane Aspects
While high-tech robotic picking might steal the spotlight, don't overlook the more routine aspects of warehouse operations. For example, automating tasks like waste removal can lead to significant time and cost savings.
Planning for the Future
It's crucial to envision your future state in the context of an evolving robotics landscape. This doesn't mean rushing into full automation but
rather identifying individual elements that can be automated in a non-sequential manner. The customer's demand for speed is driving the urgency for automation. The challenge is to balance speed with cost-effectiveness and quality.
Understanding the Role of Leadership
Leadership plays a crucial role in the successful implementation of warehouse robotics. It's up to the executive team to orchestrate multiple initiatives simultaneously to ensure that they all come together to form a holistic solution. This requires a clear vision, strategic planning, and effective project management.
Building in Flexibility
Flexibility is a key factor in warehouse automation. As the market evolves, so should your automation strategy too. This means being open to new technologies and approaches and being willing to adapt your processes as needed. It's not about finding a one-size-fits-all solution, but rather about finding the right mix of automation and manual processes that works best for your specific needs.
Achieving the Customer Satisfaction Breakthrough
Warehouse automation can have a significant impact on customer satisfaction. By speeding up the fulfillment process, you can deliver products to your customers faster and more efficiently. However, it's important to remember that speed is not the only factor that matters. Quality and accuracy are also crucial. By focusing on all three aspects - speed, quality, and accuracy - you can provide a superior customer experience.
The Future of Warehouse Automation
The future of warehouse automation is exciting and full of potential, but successful warehouse robotics initiatives require a careful and strategic approach. It's about navigating the unknowns of the future without losing sight of the present
realities. With advances in robotics and AI, we can expect to see even more efficient and sophisticated warehouse operations in the future. While automation can bring many benefits, it also comes with risks. By understanding these risks and taking steps to mitigate them, you can ensure that your warehouse automation journey is a successful one.

Christmas peak has not been cancelled
It is now the time of year when many retailers and their supply chain partners will be starting to plan and secure their warehousing space and resource requirements for the Big One – the ‘golden quarter’ and the Christmas peak.
Predicting requirements seven or eight months ahead is always a nightmare, and this year looks particularly fraught. There is, of course, a ‘cost of living crisis’ but strangely, although full figures are not yet in, it looks as though consumer spending in the Easter peak held up much better than expected – indeed, anecdotally it appears that some retailers and suppliers were short of stock as demand exceeded their somewhat gloomy expectations.
Price inflation remains painfully high but may decline rapidly over the course of the year. Or we may be trapped in a rerun of the high-inflation Seventies – both views are available, often from the same economic forecasters.
One rather firmer prognostication is that e-retailing seems to have found its new natural level – around a quarter of retail trade. So omnichannel is the way forward for many retailers, with the additional complexity that this brings to warehouse space planning.
Given the uncertainties, many firms will have held back on committing to space for the winter peak, and some, with pressure on margins and anticipating subdued trading, will have decided not to renew leases on some of their existing estates. That is no bad thing – in our experience it very rarely makes sense for a business to scale its ‘permanent’ warehousing facilities to accommodate the highest peaks in demand. This ties up capital, or drains cashflow, whilst making an inefficient use of scarce and increasingly expensive labor and other resources during the off-peaks – which for many firms is most of the year.
And this year, particularly, is not a good time to be entering into long-term space commitments. Despite some big names, especially in e-commerce, rationalizing their warehousing estate, quality
space is still in short supply, whilst landlords are facing eye-watering increases in the interest they are paying. Unsurprisingly this is reflected in rents: the agents Colliers report that in 2022 there was a year-on-year increase of 10.5% in rents for large (100,000 sq ft plus) units, and a huge 13.2% on smaller and multi-let facilities and, say the agents “these will continue to rise, albeit at a slower pace”. Meanwhile, the bills for rates, electricity and other utilities, insurance and all the other costs of operating even a half-empty warehouse continue to increase.
The solution is to adopt strategies that embrace and make a virtue of short-term leasing. While the headline rates per square foot may look high, the business is only paying these for the time that the space is needed, and in practice rates are often highly competitive as the space provider is keen to see any return on what an underutilized or idle asset is otherwise.
Nor is the renter paying throughout the year to heat, light, staff and otherwise maintain largely empty space. And often, if a business moves in to take up another company’s spare capacity (which may be because that company is overprovided, or because its peak requirements are at a different time of year) many of the operating costs, perhaps even including labor and IT, are already paid for, so the renting company is charged something closer to the marginal rate rather than the full cost. It can even be that facilities are available already equipped with levels of productivity-enhancing IT and automation that the business would struggle to resource or justify on its own account.
However, the flexibility offered by a strategy that includes short-term lets isn’t just for Christmas. It can allow a supplier or retailer to experiment –with new product lines, with new regional markets or new customers, with new distribution chain architectures, with different blends and approaches to the physical store/e-commerce balance – at relatively little long-term risk.
Such a strategy may even lead to semi-permanent arrangements: an understanding that the business is intended to take the same space for the same three months every year.
Bis Henderson Space has many years of experience in helping companies ‘right size’ their peak space requirements, and then securing the right temporary space: right in terms of cost, location, and facilities, from bare sheds to space in fully manned and equipped distribution centers. We have built an extensive network of space partners who, sometimes occasionally, sometimes predictably year-on-year, have more warehousing than they need. They are often keen not only on the extra income but for the productivity and efficiency improvements – such as being able to maintain a fully employed permanent staff – that full occupation of their facility can yield.
We help companies find and implement mutually beneficial deals surprisingly quickly – but be warned: an increasing number of companies are
now actively seeking the benefits of including short-term accommodation as part of their warehousing strategy – and Christmas is closer than you think!
Steve Purvis, Managing Director at Bis Henderson Space has many years’ experience in this market. We can help convert your seasonal space requirements from a firefighting emergency to a considered tactical response as part of your wider warehousing/fulfilment strategy.
