Review

Winter Wonderland Words by Carly Smith

For the ultimate girly day out, or a date with a difference head to Hyde Park, London and go walking in a Winter Wonderland

N

ow in its fourth year, Winter Wonderland hasn’t lost its sparkle. Full of festive feeling and the magic of Christmas, the event attracted over two million visitors last year alone. Situated between Knightsbridge and Marble arch, Oxford Street – Winter Wonderland is the perfect place to take a breather from hectic New Years Eve sale shopping in the capital. For last minute Christmas shopping, shun the high street and take a stroll around Angels Christmas Market. With over 100 stalls, you are sure to find a unique gift for that special someone at the German style bazaar. Browse handmade arts and crafts including ceramics, candles, jewellery and toys. Get your skates on and be sure to book in advance for London’s largest open air ice rink as tickets sell out fast. The place is packed with rides, from a traditional carousel to the adrenaline pumping Power Tower. The 50 metre high observation wheel offers breathtaking views of the park, the Serpentine and London landmarks further afield such as the Gherkin and the BT tower. For an extra special ride, and a touch of luxury, hire the VIP Pod with champagne for £85. This year the park has two Circuses. The traditional Zippos Christmas Circus is home to the clowns. The more sophisticated Cirque D’Hiver shows a spectacular display of acrobats and contortionists. Michelle Carroll, 24, from Hitchin, Hertfordshire is visiting for the second time, ‘We had such a laugh last year we booked up to come again. It’s a great way to catch up with the girls before Christmas; I love the ice skating and the mulled wine’. Samantha Dixon, 21, who lives in the

south of France agrees, ‘The mulled wine is delicious, really puts you in the festive mood. It’s just a shame the weather is so cold’. When the sun goes down the park lights up, and the bars play host to a range of live music and entertainment. Our favourite is the giant inflatable E Cube Bar, located next to the ice rink. Sip on mulled wine while listening to the angelic voices of traditional carollers. Entry to the event is free, however Scrooges need not attend. Adult rides cost at least £5 a pop (£8 for the big wheel), skating is £10 and food and drinks are charged at the usual premium you would expect to pay in such novel surroundings. Add to that the price of a show and the obligatory shopping and you will find that this is no budget day out. Everything is outside and there is little shelter from the elements, so remember to put on your winter woollies and wrap up warm, grab a hot chocolate and get ready for the ultimate wonderfully wintery experience.

Designer Designerprofile profile

Ralph Lauren He is the man that added charm to fashion and inspired a generation of designers to create classic styles with the added invention of sensitivity. Words by Ciham Messouki

Volume 8

R

alph Lauren, it’s a name that speaks volumes on design, luxury, sophistication and above all success. The self-made billionaire has created a must have brand which has many celebrity fans, including the likes of Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox and John Mayer. He has created clothing of such luxury and elegance it’s hard to believe he never attended fashion school and above all he has made us fall in love with what we thought were impossible fashions.(like grandmas knitted Christmas jumpers, which John Mayer shows to be quiet, an attractive item). Lauren has led many to fall in love with classic designs has become one of the most wanted designers among not only celebrities but any fashion lover to grace their eyes upon Lauren’s attractive creations. Only the silver haired charmer Ralph Lauren can encourage such traditional fashions to become modern must have trends. The 71 year-old born New Yorker, has become an iconic designer with his classic designs. He has inspired many with his take on simple elegance, and became a household name with the success of his Polo line. He is behind several other product lines, which include; Ralph

Lauren for Men, Ralph Lauren for Women, Double RL, Ralph Lauren Home, and Ralph Lauren Paint. All embrace a sense of luxury and class and an undoubted passion for taking traditional designs and giving them a modern twist making them relevant must-have trends. No doubt an ambitious designer and businessman; Lauren has exceeded his

“I don’t design clothes, I design dreams.”

statement featured in an old Clinton yearbook of wanting to be a millionaire, by becoming a successful billionaire designer. His fortune can only be expected to grow with the popularity of his graceful designs. His debonair style has helped him gain great praise from the fashion community; his spirit of creating simple and elegant clothing has made him a highly renowned designer. As the man himself says “I don’t design clothes, I design dreams.” From a young age his sense of style was apparent, purchasing expensive suits with money he earned from his after-school

job. Hard to believe a 12 year old breathed a cool sophisticated style in desirable expensive threads. His first step towards fashion was designing ties which he often sold to his classmates. After graduating and receiving a loan he took further his talent for designing wide styled ties. The success of his designs encouraged him to begin his Polo line inspired by old classic English-tweed style. The American fashion company Bloomingdales once asked Lauren to redesign his ties, claiming that his wide styles didn’t suit their clientele. However they were quick to regain Lauren as a designer after he refused to give in and all trend setting business types wanted his designs. The small step of selling a range of ties began a giant leap into the fashion world. Ralph Lauren has worked his way to gaining a well-deserved title of being one of the world’s most celebrated fashion designers. His outlook on fashion is one that sparks imagination, determination and tradition. His classic Christmas jumpers speak volumes on the success of his designs. Taking a traditional item of clothing and turning it into something that is sure to be a festive trend everyone would want in their wardrobe.

Your guide to...

As 2010 draws to a close and the NewYear slowly approaches, it’s only fair that Volume takes a look back at not only this past year but the past decade and re-visits some of the most memorable moments in fashion.

The past, present and future of fashion Words by Aida Pajko

Volume 20 Volume 20

Lady Gaga as a fashion trendsetter

I

t is strange to think clothes were once just an item which you threw on so you wouldn’t walk around naked. Just like everything in life, fashion has also become more than just a need and has been embedded in our lives as a necessity which reflects who you are. Every decade has its own style and identity which establishes each generation which grew up following a particular trend. Gone were the days of big hair, ruffles and MC Hammer pants, which dominated the ‘80’s. This inspired the bright and baggy look of the ’90’s, which matched plaid shirts with ripped jeans. For the more chic look, the style was pairing a baby doll dress with knee high socks, and a small heeled shoe. Sound familiar? That’s because ‘the noughties’ was the decade of comeback and re-introducing styles from the past 50 years, piled into one period. It saw the future of fashion and where it was headed in 2011 ‘the futuristic style’, which was set off by Lady Gaga. She is relatively the Madonna of today’s fashion, and their is no doubt the New Year will be dominated by her style. Now let’s take a look back at the past 10 years and which style moments and mishaps established a modern fashion era.

Timeline:

2000-2010 ‘00- You can’t go wrong in Versace, as

Jennifer Lopez proved in 2000 at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards that being daring can cement your moment as a fashion icon. She stunned the red carpet in a long green low cut dress which from that point on showed she was more than just Mr. Combs’ other half to a global megastar.

‘01-Woman love picking out their

other half ’s clothes, but how far is too far? How about when the prince and princess of pop, Britney Spears and then boyfriend Justin Timberlake showed up to the 28th Annual American music awards in 2001 wearing matching denim outfits. A fashion trend of top to toe denim which is not on the top of our list of styles which should have made a come back, and is a style moment which is sure to be remembered.

‘02-Shopping can be a great stress reliever, which was the case when actress Winona Ryder was caught shop lifting at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills, taking up to $5000 of clothes. A shocking moment of the decade, which resulted in a long public trial in 2002 that Winona attended like any ‘fashionista’ would in a Marc Jacob’s dress.

‘08-The long awaited tour of the Spice Girls in 2007/2008 saw them more stylish than ever with the help of designer Roberto Cavalli. He created the groups stage outfits, which reflected each members personality and took them from sweet ‘90’s girl band to savvy superstars. ‘09- 2009 saw history in the making, with the Inauguration of Barak Obama

‘03-When you think of Bill Clinton, as the 44th President of the United States

fashion is not usually the first thing that comes to mind, but in 2003 the former US president was paid nearly £1.3 million to become the face of Fapai, a men’s clothing line based in China.

‘04-Justin Timberlake makes another appearance on our timeline in a where were you when...? type of moment. With the notorious wardrobe malfunction at the 2004 Super bowl, the incident showed Timberlake expose one of Janet Jackson’s breasts as he ripped of the studded leather breast plate. It was a controversial moment in fashion.

“Gone were the days of big hair, ruffles and MC Hammer pants, which dominated the ‘80’s”.

of America. It was also a pivotal moment in fashion which bought a new lady to the fashion forefront, the First lady that is. Michelle Obama stunned the world in a gold –embossed coat and matching dress, by one of her favourite newcomer designers Isabel Toledo. She also wore a beautiful white gown in the evening (pictured below).

‘10-This past year was all about

experimenting with fashion and moving away from past styles and looking forward to the future. 2010 was essentially the ‘Gaga decade’. Although the popstar launched her music career a few years back, 2010 was the year that saw her dominate the charts as well as the red carpet. If you’re ‘Gaga’ for the Lady and her style then you would agree that her outfits maybe daring and different but there is no doubt she has given fashion a whole new meaning. There you have it, our crucial moments in fashion of the last 10 years. Some great and some which should have been left in the wardrobe.

‘05-An exhibit of photographs of princess Diana was shown at an event in Kensington Palace by Mario Testino in 2005, which also had her dresses on display. It showed her as one of the countries most elegant and beautiful women. ‘06-Fashion is a great way to brighten up the court room and dazzle the Jury with your impeccable taste. That is exactly what Naomi Campbell did in 2006, when she showed up to a police precinct wearing a white fur poncho. A good way to cover up the handcuffs, or maybe a new style trend of ‘Crime chic’. ‘07-In 2007, Louis Vuitton were forced to apologise to Dutch artist Anthon Beeke, he was said to have used the ‘Naked Ladies Alphabet’ for some of his images without permission. He eventually decided not to use the images.
