The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) is excited once again to continue the support of Art of Black Miami following a successful launch last year during Art Basel Season. This second year of collaboration is spearheaded by the new Multicultural Tourism & Development Department and is focused on celebrating and showcasing art, culture and diversity that resides here in greater Miami. The Art of Black Miami is a signature initiative of the GMCVB that shines a spotlight on local, national and international art and artists representing the African diaspora. Taking place during Art Basel on Miami Beach, but continuing year-round, this initiative is a celebration of the abundant artistic diversity found within Miami's mosaic neighborhoods. Residents and visitors will experience more than 50 new artwork and projects while attending special events, meeting artists, visiting pop-up art galleries and more. Our dedicated website, www.ArtOfBlackMiami.com, provides real-time updates and more information, events and programs available to visit and attend in December and will also be continuously updated throughout 2016 with art exhibits and programs happening in the Miami area throughout the year. Although we are still considered the “New Kids on the Block”, we are present and are at a level of becoming the new standard of comparison.
KROMA This Year [Coconut Grove Collaborative, Inc.] exhibit It will be a part of KROMA museum’s KROMA PRESENTS: 12 x12 Series. Highlighting 12 Artists, 12 Installations, over 36 days. The 12 artists will have been selected and challenged to create 72 12” x 12” pieces that must be installed and chronicled on social media each day before opening night on December 1, 2015.

Miami’s Cultural Contributions Miami’s cultural contribution is vast and in a lot of ways still untapped. The small loop-hole neighborhoods that are here all represent small cultural destinations and really make Miami a vibrant place to visit and to experience heritage. The Art of Black Miami Our exhibition, called Art of Black Miami, is a platform that the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau created to help showcase and spotlight the local, national and international renowned artists here in Miami. The initiative was started to celebrate the artistic diversity and to showcase the culturally rich neighborhoods of Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, Downtown, Liberty City, Little Havana, Miami Beach, Historic Overtown and Opa- Locka. Favorite Miami Artist Purvis Young is one of the artists that comes to mind who has made an impact. He is referred to as our home town Picasso and is considered one of the most prolific artist from Miami.

Favorite Miami Artist My favorite local artist is Adonis Parker. I believe he captures the heart of the African-American struggle, both in his community and across the country. Overtown’s Art Scene I believe that art has the potential to influence and enlighten a community. Historically, Overtown has always been the home of an artist community. Purvis Young, an Overtown resident struggled to be recognized for many years. Today, much of his work is now exhibited in leading galleries around the world. Soul Basel The idea of the Overtown Soul of Basel, was born out of Art Africa. Art Africa was the first opportunity for black artiststo exhibit their work during the Art Basel weekend. As Overtown is revitalized, these exhibits will allow many visitors to visit and explore this community.

Art Africa Miami Arts Fair This is our 5th year hosting Art Africa Miami Arts Fair in historic Overtown, the birthplace of “cool” in the deep south during the early years of Miami’s prominence as the entertainment capital of the south. Along with a highly regarded repertoire of acclaimed artists being showcased at the Art Africa Miami Arts Fair this year, we explore in depth this idea of “Transcultural Black Presence” as it pertains to aesthetics in our signature panel discussion. Miami’s African American & Caribbean Art History Our history s is a strong one. The African Heritage Cultural Arts Center is celebrating 40 years promoting artists, in the African American community and the contributions of the scholastic duo of Dr. Carole Boyce Davies and Dr. Babacar M’bow have helped to showcase magnificent works by Caribbean artists throughout Miami. Favorite Miami Artist I am drawn to art that appeals to my aesthetic sensibilities. I like works that evoke an emotional response. All of the artist, currently exhibiting in this year’s Art Africa Miami 2015 edition are my favorites but there was one in particular that blew me away and that was Philippe Dodard.

Get ready for Miami’s amazing art and fashion! Catwalk Pros will be presenting Art Africa’s fashion production for their opening reception on December 2nd (see page 10 for details). Catwalk Pros brought their fabulous production Miami Fashion Launch (MFL) to the Little Haiti Cultural Center on Oct. 31st – with their theme “Saints and Sinners”. The show featured Florida designers such as Adjanie and

MIA Magazine Art of Black Cover Competition Winner Push 2060 Meet Troy Simmons: Accidental Artisan and Deliberate Messenger Who is Troy Simmons? That question comes to mind when pondering the work, style, and life of the Texas-native and current Bakehouse Art Complex resident artist. Is he an artist, architect, realtor, or all three? From his handlebar mustache, thoughtful conversation, to his eclectic wardrobe, Simmons communicates that he is so much more. “I’m an artist, lover of architecture, and husband,” said Simmons. Simmons has an educational background in Environmental Science and Architecture. He ventured into the art as a career by accident. “Unknowingly, all my life I was an artist. I was always creating things. But, I came from a working class background. So I was taught to go to school and get a job,” the physician’s son recalled. “A friend of mine saw my work and recommended I put it into an art show.” That was more than 15 years ago and allowed Simmons to see art as a possible career. These days the Sam Houston State University-graduate is represented by Jankossen Contemporary Art (New York/ Basel, Switzerland). His works can command up to $40,000 and have been featured throughout South Florida, Texas, New York, Paris and Germany. Simmons recently conversed with MIA about the method and message behind his craft.

Revered as the heart of the Cuban diaspora, Little Havana is as close as you can get to Havana without actually going there. It’s one of Miami’s most iconic neighborhoods and its epicenter is SW 8th Street, or Calle Ocho, as locals call it. Calle Ocho is full of Old-world charm, mom-and-pop shops, art galleries, Cuban restaurants, genuine Cuban cigar shops, and Cuban coffee. Little Haiti is ever-evolving and home to some of the best Haitian food this side of Cap-Haïtien. There are authentic Haitian lifestyle markets, murals commemorating Haiti’s heroes and history, and monthly block parties complete with spontaneous conga lines. The Little Haiti Cultural Center features all things Haitian in Little Haiti. It’s part museum, part idea incubator, part art and dance studio, and part theatre. One of Miami’s earliest Black communities, Historic Overtown is known for its rich history, culture and civic pride. Colorful urban murals painted by the late Purvis Young, the annual Overtown Music and Arts Festival, and the Historic Lyric Theater attract locals and visitors alike. Just bring an appetite for history and amazing food. In the late 1800s, Bahamian natives settled in Coconut Grove and established the Village West. These settlers helped build Miami from the ground up. The Village West takes pride in its Black Heritage Tours, which highlight 11 historical sites, all within walking distance. History and heritage. Now or Neverland: Adventures in Urban Surrealism. This is a 4-day adventure through the work of 50 artists from across the world, showcasing the reality of Now and the fantastical Neverland of their imagination; to be held December 3-6 during Art Basel. Attendees will be guided through Now or Neverland via an array of mediums such as visual art, multi-media, fashion and live performances in jazz, dance, spoken word poetry, soul and hip-hop. The exhibit and celebration take place in the heart of Little Haiti at the Chef Creole Performance Park. The park, which is the vacant lot directly behind the restaurant, will be re-purposed with Murals, Staging and Hanging Walls made from recycled materials. MUCE, Chef Creole, and #ArtCentralMiami built this partnership to ensure that locals play an integral role in the emergence of the next artistic hotspot in Miami. "Conceptually, the foundation of my work is to challenge and draw parallels between historical and contemporary cultural issues, faced by the African Diaspora. I examine the psyche of young black males feeling like a target and being targeted. I question the tradition of heirlooms (and their lack) and the role they play on our values today. Objects that are antiques or antiqued are associated with historical relevance and wealth. By placing these issues in an antiqued object I establish the value in furthering a discussion around such issues. Analyzing historic and present, social and economic, disparities are what shape my conceptual process."

Miami’s Filmmaking Prodigy Elijah Wells By Tasha Sharell

While most high school seniors prepare for SAT’s and prom dates, 17-year-old filmmaking prodigy Elijah Wells is taking his latest project to this year’s Art of Black Miami. The south Florida native will document Art of Black Miami by highlighting the presence of African American art and its influence on modern culture. If you’re unfamiliar with Elijah Wells, Elijah became an award winning filmmaker by the young age of 14 with his debut film entitled, “The Gift.” Inspired by the art of filmmaking since 8, Elijah was granted the opportunity to participate as an intern for the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) while still in middle school. As a shining star in the program, it wasn’t long after that Elijah would attend his very own screening. Following the success of his debut film, he released another film also awarded by ABFF called “Welcome to Miami.” His upcoming project Elijah states, “Is more than just about highlighting African
American art, it’s more so about showing that as African Americans, our reach goes beyond just music and sports; African American art has influenced different races and cultures which we rarely get credited for.” This documentary will be a medium to educate its audience on how Black art has transcended way beyond the black race and the inspiration it’s given to all cultures. According to Elijah, “Art Basel is also the time to really see Miami, it’s a celebration of all different walks of life coming together to uplift creativity with-in the community.” Although an outstanding candidate for college, Elijah is also placing a lot of focus on his decision for higher education and where he can continue his growth as a filmmaker. He claims his top film school choices are NYU, USC, and UCLA in no particular order. Certainly wherever he goes, he’ll keep his strong Miami roots as he progresses in the art of storytelling.

This season at the Miramar Cultural Center/ArtsPark continues with many more must-see shows. These include: the Holiday Concert featuring two-time Grammy recording artist, Smokie Norful; the classic ballet, Romeo & Juliet; two classic operas, Aida and Carmen; a special Valentine’s Day treat with smooth Jazz artist, saxophonist Richard Elliot and soulful R&B vocalist, Howard Hewett of Shalamar; and a special Mother’s Day
performance by the uber-talented songstress Rachelle Ferrell with her six-plus octave range. Our children’s’ shows are perfect for the entire family: December kicks off with Annie Sing-Along, so gather the family, dress up as your favorite character and sing along with Annie as she belts out songs like “Tomorrow” and “Hard Knock Life”; followed in January by the Tortoise and the Hare…The Musical, with audience participation in the race between Bunnie Hare and Thomas Tortoise-- the kids will laugh out loud non-stop! There’s Alice in Wonderland in March, an entertaining dance performance that brings this children’s classic novel to life through movement, music and scenic storytelling; and in April, The Conch Fritters – “Gumbo For Kids”, an educational show that introduces young people to the musical styles and dominant instruments of the Tropics culminating with a live performance. May caps off the season with the vibrant African Children’s Choir featuring well-loved children’s songs, handclapping, traditional spirituals and contemporary tunes accompanied by
Nutcracker Spirit ethnic instrumentation. Exhibits in the popular Ansin Family Art Gallery will celebrate works such as Purvis on Paper by Miami’s own, self-taught, Purvis Young, November 5, 2015 - January 11, 2016; a photographic collective of President Barack Obama, January 14, 2016 - February 28, 2016; framed photographs by LA’s Ralph Gibson, March 3, 2016 – May 31, 2016, and photographic portraits entitled Awakening Jamaica, June 9 – August 27, 2016.

Knight's mission to make art general is based on one simple premise: In a community as diverse as Miami, the arts can help create a cultural identity, represent who we are, inspire, explain and point a way forward. Through the Knight Arts Challenge and other initiatives, Knight encourages everyone here to participate in our culture of creativity. Knight Arts Challenge funding helped launch Free Gospel Sunday, which thousands enjoy each year at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, the monthly Big Night in Little Haiti event, and a special anniversary series featuring artist alumni of the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center. At the Perez Museum of Art Miami, Knight co-created the Fund for African American Art to help ensure the collection reflected all types of artistic excellence.
Recently, Knight celebrated 57 new Knight Arts Challenge winners. They include Delou Africa, which will expand its festival celebrating the arts of the African diaspora, the Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance, for an exchange between Miami and Caribbean artists, and the Overtown Youth Center, to prepare students for music careers at its Beats Academy.
