KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Judy Smith Crisis management expert and inspiration behind the hit TV show “Scandal” Judy Smith is founder and president of Smith & Company, a leading strategic communications firm with offices in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. Known in media circles for her expertise as a crisis management adviser, Smith has served as a consultant for a host of high profile, celebrity and entertainment clients over the course of her career including, but not limited to, Monica Lewinsky, Senator Craig from Idaho, Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., actor Wesley Snipes, NFL quarterback Michael Vick, and the family of Chandra Levy. On both domestic and international fronts, Smith has worked with federal agencies and organizations on issues including the housing crisis and education while providing counsel to heads of state and executives of major corporations on matters in the Philippines, Haiti, Jamaica and Turks and Caicos Islands. Prior to founding Smith & Company, she served as senior vice president of corporate communications at NBC and special assistant and deputy press secretary to President George H.W. Bush.

Joyce M. Roché Author and Former President & CEO, Girls Inc. Joyce M. Roché is the former president and CEO of Girls Inc., a nonprofit organization whose mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold. Before joining Girls Inc., Roché served as president and chief operating officer of Carson Products Company and vice president of global marketing at Avon Products, Inc. While at Avon, Roché became Avon’s first African American female vice president, the first African American vice president of marketing and the company’s first vice president of global marketing. Roché has authored one book, “The Empress Has No Clothes…Conquering Self-Doubt to Embrace Success,” a memoir about her struggle with the imposter syndrome.

Kelley J. Downing ’76 CEO and President, Bartlett & Co. Kelley Downing ’76 is president and CEO of Bartlett & Co., where she oversees all aspects of management and day-to-day operations. Downing is the first female president and CEO of the 117-year-old Cincinnatibased firm. Colleagues attribute the firm’s No. 2 national ranking and success to Downing’s leadership, dedication, vision, support of technology and innovation, and her strong finance background. At Bartlett & Co. and as a guest lecturer of finance at Miami University, she is a strong supporter of women in a mostly male-dominated profession. In addition to the numerous accolades awarded throughout her career, Downing was named one of the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Women of the Year in 2014 and Cincinnati Business Courier’s CEO of the Year in 2015.

MIAMI FACULTY

Jim Friedman

White Family Clinical Faculty in Entrepreneurship Jim Friedman teaches courses in creativity for Miami University’s Institute of Entrepreneurship in the Farmer School of Business and is a frequent speaker on topics of creativity and personal branding. In addition to his more than 30-year career in television broadcasting, he has created national marketing campaigns; received multiple patents; written books; and written, recorded and performed music.

Liz Mullenix Dean of the College of Creative Arts

Liz Mullenix is dean of Miami University’s College of Creative Arts and former chair of the Department of Theatre. As a theatre historian, Mullenix writes about Antebellum culture/theatre, cross-dressing, the American Civil War, first wave feminism, and gender/feminist theory. She has published articles and book reviews in several academic journals. Her book, “Wearing the Breeches: Gender on the Antebellum Stage,” was published in 2000.

Matt Myers

Dean of the Farmer School of Business and Mitchell P. Rales Chair in Business Leadership Matt Myers is dean and Mitchell P. Rales Chair in Business Leadership at Miami’s Farmer School of Business. His research focuses on global supply chain networks, foreign market entry strategies and comparative marketing systems. Prior to academia, Myers worked with both MerrillLynch and IBM-Argentina. He has consulted organizations in the global distribution, chemical, insurance, pharmaceutical and marketing research industries.

Gillian Oakenfull Professor of Marketing

Gillian Oakenfull is a professor of marketing in the Farmer School of Business. Her research on the gay and lesbian consumer market and measuring brand meaning and brand management has been published in academic journals. She has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including the 2012 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Ohio Professor of the Year.
