Welcome Welcome to Winter College 2017! For nearly 15 years, Winter College has been bringing Miamians together in stunning settings around the country to engage with top faculty. Our setting this year, the breathtaking desert oasis of Indian Wells, California, does not disappoint. Nestled in the Coachella Valley and surrounded by mountains, our campus offers something for every interest this weekend. There will be time for exciting excursions at some of the area’s most iconic landmarks, as well as time to learn and relax. The region is home to world-class golf courses and annually hosts the LPGA, so it’s only fitting that Charlie Mechem ’52, commissioner emeritus of the LPGA, joins us for the weekend. During Saturday’s dinner, Charlie will share how Miami shaped his incredible life. Maybe we’ll even pick up a few pointers from the former personal business adviser to the late, great Arnold Palmer. It’s a particular honor this year to welcome President Greg and Dr. Renate Crawford for their inaugural Winter College, a favorite among Miami traditions, and to learn from the masters themselves – five of Miami’s academic deans. I hope you enjoy connecting with the university’s leaders as well as your fellow Miamians this weekend. Love and Honor,
Ray Mock ’82, M.S. ’83 Executive Director Miami University Alumni Association

Social Justice Activism
Class period IV Notions of social justice impact our lives on a daily basis. How we work to ensure that children, families and communities all enjoy the vestiges of the American dream becomes the focus of social justice activism. This session will examine one project created by the College of Education, Health, and Society to address social justice from an activist position.
Leadership in a Season of Change
Class period I, repeats Class period V Leadership is the ability to successfully navigate any season when organizations, communities or indeed society are in transition. This Winter College session will examine both the technical as well as adaptive challenges that must occur in any leadership that operates to successfully bring about change.
Marek Dollár Dean, College of Engineering and Computing
In the Wind: Advancing Renewable Sources of Energy Class period II, repeats Class period VI Engineers design solutions with the goal of improving the quality of life for individuals and the general well-being of societies. Foremost among these socially engaged efforts are those that address the need to advance renewable energy sources as well as those that deal with preventing the degradation of environment. This session focuses on developing and advancing renewable sources of energy and making them economical, including solar, wind and fusion energy. We’ll review examples of Miami faculty and students’ involvement in socially engaged engineering.

A Healthier World: Meeting Environmental Challenges
Class period V Engineers have long been a driving force behind making the world a safer and healthier place. As the world continues to become more connected and technologically advanced, it is critical environmental challenges continue to be addressed as well. From air, water and land pollution to loss of biodiversity to ozone depletion to climate change, we’ll look at how engineers make a difference in the world. We’ll also review examples of Miami faculty and students’ involvement in socially engaged engineering.
Chris Makaroff Dean, College of Arts and Science
Advancing Medicine in the Modern Age
Class period I, repeats Class period IV Significant strides and breakthroughs have been made in modern medicine over the last decade. We’ll provide an overview on recent advances and discuss the benefits and potential ethical and social implications that come with personalized medicine tailored to the individual.
Taking a Holistic Approach to Global Challenges
Class period III Miami students and faculty of the College of Arts and Science engage in holistic learning and transformational thinking as they develop critical skills and knowledge in diverse fields to prepare for a global society. We’ll look at how that approach is used in an effort to solve today’s global challenges.
Elizabeth Reitz Mullenix Dean, College of Creative Arts
Innovation and Creativity: Why Business Needs Artists Class period II, repeats Class period VI What does the Second City improv club in Chicago, cradle of Saturday Night Live actors and writers, have to do with Wall Street? Why would a CEO of a startup hire an art history major rather than a finance major? Does the Harvard Business Review actually say that empathy is a necessary skill for young professionals? In a session led by Matt Myers, dean of the Farmer School of Business, and Liz Mullenix, dean of the College of Creative Arts, you can learn the answers to these provocative questions as they discuss the transition from a corporate age to an innovation age.

Design Thinking: Methods for the 21st Century
Class period IV History remembers Thomas Edison as an inventor, but Tim Brown, founder and CEO of IDEO, thinks of him as a “design thinker.” While architects, graphic designers, industrial designers, interior designers and fashion designers have been solving creative problems on the drafting table and in the marketplace for years; entrepreneurs, scientists and engineers have only recently become interested in employing their methodologies. This session will explore how artistic thinking and design principles are central to solving today’s most challenging questions.

The New Normal in the Global Search for Talent
Class period III As the economy shifts toward more technologically oriented goods and services, the world becomes a more competitive landscape for attracting and retaining talented employees. Simultaneously, universities are under increased pressure to modernize their curricula and methods of teaching, all with reduced funding, space and faculty. All this while the leveled world gets older, and the developing world gets younger, meaning a geographic shift for the search for digitally talented new employees. We will discuss the forces that drive this dramatic shift in the search for innovative, tech-savvy employees and what the U.S. is doing to prepare itself for these changes.
