THE CHAIRMAN’S LETTER

From the Chairman of the Board of Miami Beach Pride

As we go into our 16th year of Miami Beach Pride, the true meaning of gathering as a community and lifting each other up through unique programming and a celebration of being our true selves has never been more important

This year’s theme: “Pride Progress Perseverance ” is particularly poignant as an important reminder that all of the work that has been done to achieve equality, rights, safety and the freedom to be our authentic selves can never be taken for granted

At the same time, it’s also critical for us to look back and see how far we’ve come. This year, we’re taking more of an inward look at those trailblazers who fought to advance our causes and pay homage to their work

I sincerely hope you’ll go up to 12th Street to see our 2024 Exhibition which is unlike anything we’ve done in previous years for Miami Beach Pride We’ve curated moments in LGBT history going back more than 100 years in panels that are worth your time to stop and learn There are going to be names you recognize and likely a few that are new but each played an important part in the rich tapestry of our story for acceptance, rights and change

We also hope that it inspires those who come through our festival to not only enjoy the wonderful entertainment, visit our vendors and soak up the beautiful Miami Beach sunshine that it’s up to all of us to speak up for ourselves and make it clear that we’re never going back into the closet

TheChairmanofthe Boardsharesthe purposeofthetheme forthe2024festival

As part of our commitment to be as inclusive as we can and not have financial barriers, we are proud to continue to keep this festival free and open to our community and allies It wouldn’t be possible without the generous support from our local leaders, generous sponsors and volunteers who work countless hours behind the scenes to make this seemingly out of thin air If you happen to see them please thank them for all of their hard work

On behalf of the entire organization, we welcome you to the festival, hope that you create memories and leave feeling inspired to continue persevering no matter what comes our way We’re in it together

FROM THE FESTIVAL DIRECTOR

As we enter the sixteenth year of Miami Beach Pride, we are so excited and proud to bring our week of events, festival and parade celebrating inclusivity, equality and love back to Lummus Park on the iconic Ocean Drive in Miami Beach Following our fifteenth anniversary endeavor with the mission of Growing Stronger Together, we find ourselves leaning into a theme that is the foundation of our struggles and our successes as we highlight the history of Pride and the LGBTQ experience through time Pride, Progress, Perseverance represents the resiliency and determination of our Community as we continue to navigate, survive and thrive in the everchanging social climate.

“our team of rainbow warriors have worked tirelessly to plan, organize, and execute a series of cultural and arts events, exhibits, forums, showcases and celebrations of Pride spanning a full seventeen days”

Miami Beach Pride’s mission is to bring together members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, their friends, allies and supporters in celebration of the unique spirit and culture of the LGBTQ+ community.

We would like to extend our thanks to the unwavering support of the brands, companies and organizations who have proven their advocacy and alignment with our community by donating to our mission.

Without these sponsors, we would not be able to create these unforgettable experiences and build this massive festival for everyone to share in, for free.

Additionally, we give thanks to the local small businesses, independent artists, entrepreneurs, large companies and nonprofit organizations that make up our collection of Exhibitors and Food Vendors

Your participation gives us an up-close look at those that live and work in our Community, for our Community

It is my tenth year working with Miami Beach Pride and it is an honor for me to serve as its Festival Director Our team of rainbow warriors work tirelessly to plan, organize, and execute a series of cultural and arts events, exhibits, forums, showcases, and celebrations of Pride occurring in the first two weeks of April.

The hours are long, and the work is hard, and it would not be possible without the collaboration of our valued staff and incredible volunteers At the end of the day, all the blood, sweat and tears are 100% worth it There are few things that are more gratifying than creating a space for all members of our Community to gather and celebrate in our creation of unity We are looking forward to sharing it with all of you!

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GRANTS AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS

Throughout history, periods of upheaval moments have often given birth to genuine progress and change. In June of 1969, a group of LGBTQ+ people in New York City rioted following a police raid of the Stonewall Inn This uprising was a turning point for the queer community, spurring organized demonstrations in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City and San Francisco to mark the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots As the years went on, additional cities in North America and Europe began to hold their own public demonstrations or pride events eventually leading to hundreds of Pride events across the world from Brazil to Taiwan and other destinations in-between

Given the long history of discrimination and exclusion associated with LGBTQ+ communities and the seismic shifts in antiLGBTQIA+ legislation over the past 2years in Southern States, it’s timely to take a selective look back at our history to determine where we have been and where we are heading.

“it’s timely to take a selective look back at our history to determine where we have been and where we are heading”

Located in Lummus Park at 12th Street during Pride weekend (April 12-14, 2024) the Pride Through Time exhibition, dedicated to former Pride Chair, Mark Fernandes, aims to contextualize and highlight significant historical moments in LGBTQIA+ history to celebrate and bring to the foreground LGBTQIA+ activists, pioneers and role-models in the years leading up to the Stonewall Riots and the decades that followed For anybody (and that should be all of you) interested in consciousness raising and the continued fight for equality, inclusion and awareness don’t miss this opportunity to brush up on your LGBTQIA+ education.

Aside from the incredible FREE Festival Weekend in Lummus Park (4/13-4/14 page 60) and the perennially popular Pride Parade along Ocean Drive (4/14 page 61) there are plenty of auxiliary events and programs for everyone to enjoy Highlights include the 2nd edition of Pride’s Family Picnic in Pride Park (4/7 page 58); a screening of The Mattachine Family at Rooftop Cinema Club (4/7 page 58); the 4th edition of Queer Art Showcase at the Moxy South Beach featuring 10 LGBTQ+ artists (4/8 – page 75); and our intimate Social Justice and Wellness Evening at O Cinema (4/10–page 80). Don’t forget to publicly cheer on Pride’s Legacy Couples in the Pride Parade, many of which are celebrating 40+ years of love, (4/14 - page 84) I’m confident there is something for each of you within these pages So, grab your brightest apparel, because you know those Queens will be wearing theirs’ to compete in the Miss Miami Beach Pride Pageant (4/2 - page 18) and celebrate with PRIDE from April 2 through April 14th See you there!

THE 2024 THEME

PRIDE. PROGRESS. PERSEVERANCE.

The annual theme reflects the mission and permeates the decor of the festival

Reflecting on the current legislative climate in Florida, Miami Beach Pride searched for a theme that best encapsulates what Pride means in 2024 It was imperative to offer a reflection of where we have been and to also inspire hope for the future.

The Miami Beach Pride Board of Directors and staff found “Pride Progress Perseverance ” to encompass the ideology of the organization, the purpose of Pride festivals and marches and project an aura of resilience for the community A lot has changed since the themes of Pride as a protest Stonewall in 1969 marked a turning point for the LGBT community.

Some have questioned the relevance in the wake of corporate dollars and the "rainbow washing" of what is supposed to be an important time to come together and be visible as a community Yet, those corporate dollars remain an important element to produce Prides given the limitations of the many non-profits across the country who seek to produce a program that is both entertaining and thought provoking

While public support for the LGBT community has steadily increased through the work of countless people over the last several decades, we're experiencing a time in this country where the pendulum is swinging away from us for basic rights. Smallexcerptsfrom

Hateful voices have been amplified and it's critical that we as a community never take for granted the acceptance that has been won Becoming complacent is a dangerous path and one that we will continue to push against

We must stay engaged, collaborative, passionate and creative to push back against hate and damaging legislation

Located at the festival entrance on 12th St, be sure to witness the full Pride Through Time Exhibit live at our 2-day festival in Lummus Park Be sure to share on your socials using the hashtag #prideprogessperseverance and tag @miamibeachpride

BREAKING DOWN THE THEME

THE 2024 THEME IN 3 PARTS

PRIDE

The foundation of our organization and the mission of our festival is to allow a safe space to promote selfexpression and self-acceptance It is at the core of our values to foster unity, inclusivity, and equality.

PERSEVERANCE PROGRESS

The path of our community’s journey has never been easy and has often required forging through sheer will and determination, a spirit that must be kept alive today We must honor how far we've come and celebrate the milestone victories that have been earned in order for us to stand together today

Despite the current legislative climate and pressure our community has faced, this aspect of our theme is a mantra to hold steadfast in our identity and continue to fight for our place.

PRIDE IN FLORIDA EXHIBIT

The month of June was chosen for LGBTQIA+ Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred early on the morning of Saturday, 28 June 1969, in response to a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, an LGBTQ bar in New York City. The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender persons and drag queens rioted in anger at police harassment This riot lasted for days and is the watershed moment for the LGBTQIA+ rights movement and the impetus for organizing pride events.

In Florida, a state that has an active hurricane season from June through late October, you can find over 20+ Pride Festivals operating throughout the state from January through November While Florida recently adopted a slate of hateful laws and is fast-tracking additional measures that directly target the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and basic freedoms it’s clear from Miami Beach Pride’s research endeavors to map the Pride Festival landscape (current as of April 2024) that a small handful of events have permanently gone away, some have taken a leave of absence until 2025, but the majority of Pride events are still intact, and proliferating across the state, to celebrate the past and look into the future, a future with no discrimination, violence, and hate towards the LGBTQIA+ community.

The Pride Festivals/Pride Community Events listed in the Pride in Florida map, have not been measured by the number of attendees or longevity, but are organized by geographic location

While there is a proliferation of Pride Festivals in South Florida, particularly in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, LGBTQIA+ people are coming together and building communities from Escambia County, located at the westernmost tip of the Panhandle to Nassau County, located at the northernmost tip to Orange County and back down to Monroe

For the LGBTQ+ community, Pride celebrations are an important celebration of unity and progression and a reminder that the fight for legal protection and the right to exist is still ongoing Together as Pride Festivals in Florida, and with the vocal support of advocacy organizations like Equality Florida, the National LGBTQ Task Force, SAVE and localized LGBTQ Chambers of Commerce we can shine a light on the unique challenges we might face so that we can support each other better as a Pride Family Pride should be a safe space for LGBTQIA+ people to celebrate a part of ourselves we may hide at home, at school or at work

Miami Beach Pride highlights the sibling Pride Festivals in Florida for their 2024 theme “Pride Progress

Perseverance :

Pride gives young LGBTQIA+ people and elders in our community, the chance to attend events where they can meet others who are like them, to feel part of the wider LGBTQIA+ community Pride events also provide tabling opportunities for nonprofit arts and social-justice organizations, and business partners aligned with our mission, to create brand awareness of their work in each of our communities.

Pride is not just rainbows and unicorns, it’s also about remembering those who have made this possible through hard work, dedication, and commitment to the cause, and those who have lost their lives to hate-crimes, mental health, substance use, or HIV/AIDS This is why Pride parades should keep filling the streets, and why we should wave the rainbow flag and cheer and applaud our sponsors, supporters and stakeholders because unity and tolerance can save lives, and change hearts and minds.

Whether you are a resident or visitor to Miami Beach Pride, we thank you for your support, and the support of our Pride Family colleagues regionally, nationally and across the globe Together in PRIDE

PRIDE THROUGH TIME

EXHIBIT

We invite you to go on a journey through the rainbow tunnel and explore the rich history of our community

The Pride Through Time Exhibit outlines major events and key figures in the history of the LBTQIA+ community worldwide.

While there are many more events around the world that influenced changes in culture and laws, the events depicted seek to paint a picture of the rich tapestry of our history that often goes untold

The purpose of this exhibit is to educate the masses, honor those who have pioneered the path to change, remember our victories and inspire the fight we have today in our pursuit of equality, inclusivity and the celebration of our diversity.

This exhibit is in honor of Miami Beach Pride’s 2024 theme: Pride. Progress. Perseverance.

And dedicated in memory of former Miami Beach Pride Board Chairman: Mark Fernandes

MEET THE ARTISTS

& THEIR WORKS

1. ANGELINE CESAR (SHE/HER)

https://angelinecesarstudio com/

As a longtime fashion model, I discovered that I preferred being behind the camera, rather than in front of it While I’m known for creating large-scale photographs which capture the beauty of the warm oceanic waters near my Miami Beach home, I recently expanded my oeuvre to include photographs of 16 women - all of whom are personal friends - frolicking in the sea The women come from all over the planet, including England, Jamaica, and Serbia I’ve called this series of images "SeaSirens" to transform my human friends into fabled creatures dwelling in the waves. My water-women sparkle with the joy of dance, play, and their vital relationship with nature The models range from 20 to 80 years old, becoming ageless affirmations of beauty and delight Like the Greek goddess Venus, they are born from the sea, and relish their eternal connections with the dynamism of nature's creative force

2. MICHAEL CRAFT (HE/HIM)

https://www.instagram.com/mcphoto1021

I enjoy having men pose in ways that are more commonly associated with how women have been seen posing for many years. Lately, I’ve started incorporating my male pinup/cheesecake photography into collage pieces of men and desserts for a series of pieces that are based on the theme of my coffee table book, Sweet Tooth I have also started making collage pieces for my series “Creative Chaos” to make a statement about the current attacks on the LGBTQ+ community One piece, In Florida We Say Gay won the People’s Choice Award in The Art Of Drag show at The Pride Corner in Wilton Manors

3. JASON BOLLACK (HE/HIM) & RABIH DAMOURY (HE/HIM

https://www instagram com/rabih damoury

In our art, the male body becomes a sensual canvas, where every stroke whispers the poetry of desire Each depiction is an intimate dance, a celebration of the allure that makes our creations a seductive exploration of passion and beauty

The 10 selected artists were asked to describe their art and how it inspires conversations about the queer community in South Florida.

4. PATRICK LOUIS (HE/HIM)

https://fishandmen net

Participating in the first queer art showcase with Miami Beach Pride in 2021 inspired me to work with the Gaythering to host quarterly queer art shows for our community. Participating gives me a chance to meet other artists and continue to grow even more queer arts events in the city. My art in particular is based on the fish and men of south Florida, bringing awareness to our underwater neighbors and queer life around South Florida

5. ROCIO MARTINEZ (SHE/HER)

https://www instagram com/rocio mt

My current body of work, titled "Mirror" is a series of 8 limited edition art prints that explore how complex concepts like human emotions, psyche, and exploration of nature, can be simplified to lines, symbols, and patterns, representing reality in a way that reminds the honesty of a kid, the timelessness of petroglyphs, and the technicality of architectural drawing.

6. ANGELICA RODRÍGUEZ (SHE/HER)

https://www instagram com/jabones lanegra

I was born in Bogota- Colombia Since 2020 I have been based in Miami I have dedicated my whole life to understanding creative processes and rescuing customs and traditions that I fear may be lost My training in interior design, bioconstruction, permaculture, ecology and visual arts led me to create as my artistic practice the enterprise "Jabones La Negra" to bring healing to the world through my art, and especially to skin, the largest organ of our body To minimize taboo and create awareness my collective body of work “Vagina Bloom” is comprised of paintings and sculptures, handmade vulva-shaped sculptured soaps and therapeutic oils The ingredients for my soaps and oils, which can be purchased online, are sourced ethically, and no synthetic or endangered crop ingredients products are used 100% of the raw material is of vegetable origin and biodegradable, thus avoiding water contamination of rivers, seas, lakes, etc

7. SCOTT SCHNEIDER (HE/HIM)

I moved from New York to Miami two years ago to start the next chapter in my life While my work is not all LGBTQspecific, the inspiration for my art comes from being brave, taking risks, and not being afraid of the thoughts or judgments of others I stand by the fact that art has no rules and knows no boundaries which is why I layer and assemble different materials such as photographs, playing cards, resin, and paper, to create unique one-of-a-kind art pieces I’m a strong believer in straying from normality because being “normal” is overrated

8. MICHAEL TODD (HE/HIM)

http://furbabybling com

As a photographer, stylist and co-founder of In Touch Weekly Magazine I wanted to put my creative skill set to good use and have a go at a business venture I knew my pup, Princess Ziggy Stardust, needed a signature look to match her fabulous personality It all started with a giant pearl necklace that turned heads at the dog park Before I knew it, I was creating custom pieces for dogs and their stylish owners. Now, I'm excited to unveil the “Furbaby Bling” collection for the first time! From matching sets to one-of-akind pieces, whether your fur baby is a trendsetter or just loves to stand out, there's something for every fashionforward pet out there Get ready to pamper your furry friend like never before!

9. MICHAEL TRONN (HE/HIM)

https://www.michaeltronngallery.com

"Love is The Answer 3: STARDUST" is a further exploration and illustration that everyone is related to each other at the beginning of creation, all and everything being stardust Every heart I create represents an atomic particle, all of which composes everything in existence I promote that everyone recognizes their own, and everyone else', and everything's holiness, uniqueness, oneness, and divinity All of my work is designed to inspire connection for the purpose of eliminating the illusion of disconnection and ending bigotry My work is designed to inspire, uplift, and create consciousness and cooperation so that there will be peace between people and nations globally and care and harmony for the planet so that it is healthy

10. SHERMAN YEE (HE/HIM)

https://shermanyee com

My art focuses on queer narratives through figurative art works My work features various representations about masculinity and the spectrum from hyper-masculine to feminine In “Queer Figures” archetypes of masculinity are featured and re-examined through a queer lens in sensual situations

LEGACY COUPLES

CELEBEBRATING LGBTQ+ LOVE

Miami Beach Pride’s Legacy Couples program, established during the first Pride in 2009, recognizes same-sex couples who have been in committed relationships of 10 years or longer.

While all of us who are openly a part of the LGBTQ+ community are living and writing the history of our movement, its oftentimes the hidden stories of our queer elders who were at the forefront of the fight for equality and fairness who paved the way for our community to live as feely as we do today

We currently have 110 couples in our program spanning Baby Boomers, GEN X, and Millennials.

Miami Beach Pride celebrates LGBTQ+ love, honoring couples who have been together 10+ years
