PRIDE GUIDE
FROM THE MAYOR
Welcome to the 14th Annual Miami Beach Pride Week and Festival. Since its inception in 2009, Miami Beach Pride has grown from a local event into a global one, with over 80,000 attendees last year. This will be the second year that Miami Beach Pride is a ten-day celebration, taking place from April 1st to April 10th. We hope to see you at the various Pride activations and events throughout the ten days, led by this year’s Grand Marshals. We will raise our rainbow flag at City Hall on Friday, April 1st, light up Lincoln Road that evening to commemorate Pulse and, of course, parade down Ocean Drive as part of our annual Pride Parade on Sunday. In between all the events please enjoy our beautiful beaches and scenic beachwalk just blocks away in our historic Art Deco district. Also, don’t forget to visit Pride Park, a beautiful new 5.8-acre park across from our stunning Convention Center. Our City is a one-of-akind destination that has something for everyone. Miami Beach is proud to host Pride Week once again and show how we are a global icon for equality as we support the spirit and culture of the LGBTQ community!
Enjoy!

PRIDE GUIDE
FROM THE COUNTY MAYOR
Dear Miami-Dade County residents and visitors,
Welcome to the 14th Annual Miami Beach Pride Festival, an inclusive event designed to celebrate the unique spirit and culture of our local LGBTQ+ community!
After a tumultuous 2021, we are so glad to be back on schedule for ten days of fun, fashion, and flavor from April 1st to April 10th.
For more than a decade, Miami Beach Pride has been a bastion of inclusion and joy in our community, bringing together individuals and families from all walks of life – as diverse as our community itself.
Miami-Dade County is a proud sponsor of this celebration, and as long as I am Mayor, you will always have an ally and a partner in County Hall.
With Pride,
County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava

PRIDE GUIDE
FROM THE CHAIRMAN Just over six months ago we produced our very first pandemicera Pride that presented more challenges than we have ever faced in our history. Mirroring the experience of so many, there was a tremendous amount of uncertainty, trepidation but also a deep commitment to providing a safe space to gather and express ourselves. The 2022 theme is “There’s No Place Like Home” and while it’s easy to point to the obvious symbols of the theme, for us it goes much deeper. The last two years have presented challenges as our personal yellow brick roads may have diverged from the paths we initially set out on. We might have been even more estranged from families for a host of reasons, and relied even more on our chosen families all while dealing with our own Wicked Witches. Yet, through it all we continue on in search of our own Oz, whether that’s the courage to come out, transition, embrace new pronouns, start families, find love or seek a new career to name a few. While often faced with adversity, the LGBTQIA+ community has always been resilient and this year’s Pride is dedicated to that.

As an organization, we will continue to work hard to provide a festival and parade free of charge to welcome our brothers and sisters as well as our allies in the spirit of togetherness. This year, we have continued to expand our programming with a variety of social and cultural events we hope you find as interesting and fulfilling as it was to produce them. We remain abundantly grateful for the continued support for our sponsors, local leaders and our amazing volunteers! On behalf of the entire Board, we welcome you to our own little piece of Oz in the heart of Miami Beach.
Bruce Horwich Chairman Miami Beach Pride
PRIDE GUIDE
FROM THE FESTIVAL DIRECTORS Following the success of our post-pandemic iteration of Miami Beach Pride in September 2021, we are excited and proud to be bringing our week of events, festival and parade celebration of inclusivity, equality and unity back to our normal scheduled spring programming. Miami Beach Pride’s mission is to bring together members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, their friends, allies and supporters in celebration of the unique spirit and culture of the LGBTQ+ community. Welcome to the celebration! We would like to extend our thanks to the unwavering support of the brands, companies and organizations who have proven their advocacy and alignment with our community by donating to our mission. Without these sponsors, the heartbeat of Pride, we would not be able to create these unforgettable experiences and build this massive festival for everyone to share in, for free. It is an honor for Rob and I to serve as co-festival directors for Miami Beach Pride. We and our team of rainbow warriors have worked tirelessly to plan, organize, and execute a series of cultural and arts events, exhibits, forums, showcases, and celebrations of Pride.

There are few things that are more gratifying than creating a space for all members of our community to gather and celebrate in our creation of unity. The hours are long, and the work is hard, but it would not be possible without the collaboration of our valued staff and incredible volunteers. Together with our generous sponsors, numerous exhibitors and parade participants, world class entertainment and various community partners, we are certain that Miami Beach Pride 2022 will create memories that last a lifetime. In Pride,
Stephanie Swanson & Rob Legere
PRIDE GUIDE
FROM
THE DIRECTOR OF GRANTS & CULTURAL AFFAIRS
We should all take PRIDE in an organization that has pushed the boundaries of what a Pride Festival brings to its community. In positioning diversity, equitability and a culture of belonging at the heart of its core values, Miami Beach Pride continues to prioritize the most marginalized and underserved in our community including transgender and non-binary individuals, people of color, people with disabilities, elders, youth, and those who live at the intersections of these many complex identities. We recognize that it's vital for our festival event to be accessible and welcoming not only to people with differing sexualities but also to those of differing abilities. 2021 marked the first year of additional programming with specified intent to be more inclusive in its celebration of diversity. We curated specific events geared toward educating on social justice, health and wellness issues, celebrating our local queer artists, and a Legends Ball that was dynamically successful in Miami. This momentum continues in 2022 with the world premiere of The Legacy Couples: 400+ Years of LGBTQ Love exhibition and the launch of our new Calming Pavilion and Beyond Limits programming grant awarded from Challenge America/National Endowment for the Arts.

Clayre Benzadón (she/her) I would describe my art as experimental and queer in terms of the way that I attempt to deconstruct / play around with form and multilingualism within my work (an example of this can be illustrated in my bisexual-centric math poem titled "Category Theory"). My poetry has in part allowed me to come to terms with queer desire and sexuality, and this is also shown in my writing. The constant delving of linguistic experimentation within the poems also allows for each theme to transform into more mythological, unconscious, and psychological entities that hold within them more subtle aspects of surrealism and wordplay. I am grateful to have been able to share my work in the South Florida community in general. I most recently shared my poems of desire mostly recently while leading a Reading Queer workshop, a South Florida based organization, and which I hope has reached enough of our community as a result as well. Jonathan Brooks My art celebrates the colors of the rainbow which are part of the Pride flag of the queer community.

Marco Caridad We should find unity, judge less, and love more! Art allows me to express myself fearless of “what will they say” throughout the firm strokes of my work and without seeking to make it perfect or beautiful. I have always been passionate about mixing reconstructed materials and creating visual textures using my intuition. The hidden and de-configurated with emphasis on repeating it insistently are projections of my frustrations about social injustice and my journey overcoming my own queerness as facing my fears of the homophobia created by my religious upbringing, translating it into intriguing marks/forms that seek to engage curiosity and make connections that can spark empathy. My studio is a laboratory space where I abstract concepts inspired by memories, identity, gender, and sexuality. I combine multiple disciplines (painting, sculpting, printmaking, literature, performing, and media arts) with as many techniques as I can experiment with; as in life, possibilities are endless having new technologies or machines every day to play with. I think that if Da Vinci, Picasso, or Warhol were alive, they would be trying to use laser cutting and NFTs as well. Heather Casseus My art gives me freedom from the heteronormative patriarchal binary systems. This freedom allows me to create artwork that showcases the Black and Brown queer community. Angeline Cesar By taking time alone to think and experiment about who you really are and what you want in life. Agua Dulce Gloriosa (they/he) Everything I create is an extension of who I am, how I process, and how it feels to move through the world through the intersections of identity I find myself in. As an ancestrally connected Latin transfluid brown gayboy - my expressions act as a resistance to the white heteronormative patriarchal standard by which we are expected to adhere to in this reality. The radical vulnerability exposed through my performances and poetry inspire introspection within the viewer, who will hopefully begin to reflect on their own intersectional identity and how it relates to other marginalized individuals. Maxwell Felman My digital art brings the LGBT+ Community into the metaverse.

Leslie Anne Frye-Thomas Life's complexities energize Leslie Anne. As a queer artist of color, she's committed to reflecting these intricacies in her work. The author solidifies this in "Pum Pum Rock," the story of a young Jamaican woman who, years after surviving a brutal conversion therapy attempt, returns home not just to face her demons—but to bury them. Leslie Anne will be signing copies of her book. Nelida Jean-Baptiste Pellot My work is a meditation on my own energy as a queer trans person. Patrick Louis My work showcases fish and men in our underwater backyard off the coast of South Florida. Ali Miranda A collage of 'selfies' taken from gay-dating-sites, represents the different 'look' of the gay-men community. David Sexton My Mandalart speaks to my LGBTQ identity by depicting balance and harmony in the whole, while allowing for infinite diversity in the components that make it up. The word "mandala" means "circle" in sanskrit. There is room for all colors, all shapes, all diversity within the circle. That is what makes it beautiful... Ranijun Ruado (he/they) My poetry is a way for me to make connections and find a sense of community in our huge city. Like a flare fireworking in the sky—an attempt for someone to find me where I am and as I am. Michael Tronn Love Is The Answer is designed to inspire connection for the purpose of eliminating the illusion of disconnection. It is designed to end fear, hate, and prejudice. The mission of LITA and The Smiley Hearts is to teach people that we are all connected and related based on the physics that everything comes from the same origin, and thus we are all one big family. The Smiley Hearts illustrate Love Is The Answer through their existence as entities that each represent the subatomic particles of stardust from which all is made. Victor Vasquez The differences in size, shape and color of the pea-pod pieces speak not only to the fact that we in the LGBT+ community as a whole maybe different from the world community at large but also to the very many different individuals within our community and further, the differences that make up the richness within the subcultures within our queer community.

DePaul Vera Vera uses collage to replicate elements of Miami Beach's art deco architecture. By merging such elements with found imagery of Queerness, Vera depicts his figures in a stationary oasis. Ordinary selfies of interracial couples are exalted, surrounded by colorful flatness, emphasizing moments of the everyday. Pastel tones caress dynamic shapes to rejuvenate editorials and pin-up men throughout the decades. While also dwelling on superficial desires, Vera's work highlights a celebratory aspect of the male nude, letting what's considered vulgar be emancipated. The Werkroom Our art is created to bring a new art experience to everybody and most importantly to bring fun!. At The Werkroom we use our queer artistic eye and imagination to produce clever art pieces inspired on childhood and fiction characters. We blend fantasy, fiction, and reality to create conversational art pieces.
