Dear Residents and Visitors,

Welcome to the 15th Annual Miami Beach Pride Week and Festival Since its inception in 2009, Miami Beach Pride has grown from a local event into a global one, with over 170,000 attendees last year

This will be the first year that Miami Beach Pride has expanded to a 17day celebration taking place from March 31st to April 16th. We hope to see you at the various Pride activations and events, led by this year ’ s Grand Marshals

We will raise our rainbow flag at City Hall on Friday, March 31st, light up Lincoln Road that evening and, of course, parade down Ocean Drive as part of our annual Pride Parade on Sunday, April 16th. In between all the events please enjoy our beautiful beaches and scenic beachwalk just blocks away in our historic Art Deco district. Also, don’t forget to visit Pride Park, a beautiful 5 8-acre park across from our stunning Convention Center where Miami Beach Pride is hosting their first free Easter Family Picnic on Saturday, April 8 for the community. Our City is a one-of-a-kind destination that has something for everyone.

from the Mayor of Miami Beach

Miami Beach is proud to host all of Miami Beach Pride's events and activations once again and show how we are a global icon for equality as we support the spirit and culture of the LGBTQ community!

Enjoy!

LETTER THE CHAIRMAN'S

Since our inaugural parade in 2009, we have broken so many barriers, faced adversity together and remained an inclusive and supportive LGBTQ+ community. Our home of Miami Beach is globally recognized as one of the most welcoming LGBTQ+ areas in the world and is a testament to the rising number of parade-goers who join us in celebration year after year.

As we commemorate our 15th anniversary, our theme for this year is all about growing stronger together. With the number of challenges our community has faced in the last year alone, our unwavering resilience and commitment to allyship, equality and inclusivity is something that we will have in fully display in Miami Beach this April! Strength most definitely runs in numbers and as we continue to speak out, share our stories and celebrate our uniqueness, we further encourage and uplift our community to be brave for not just themselves but for their LGBTQ+ family as well. Whether it's growing by finding the courage to come out, transitioning, fully embracing new pronouns, or literally growing your family, this year's theme is about reaching new heights together.

In the spirit of togetherness and our mission to execute a festival that celebrates our unique individuality, our hope as an organization is to not only continue to provide one of the most celebrated Prides in the country but to also inspire strength throughout our community all year long.

We are tremendously appreciative of the ongoing support from our local leaders, our generous sponsors and the amazing volunteers who have championed for our organization over the last 15 years.

On behalf of the entire board, we welcome you to celebrate this momentous 15th anniversary of Miami Beach Pride. It takes a village to build but as a community, we grow stronger together.

FESTIVAL DIRECTOR

This year marks the 15th Anniversary of Miami Beach Pride and we are so excited and proud to be bringing our week of events, festival and parade celebration of inclusivity, equality and love back to Lummus Park on the iconic Ocean Drive. Our theme, Growing Stronger Together, represents the resiliency and beauty of our Community as we continue to navigate, survive and thrive in the ever-changing social climate. And like a lush, colorful garden, Miami Beach Pride’s mission is to bring together members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, their friends, allies and supporters in celebration of the unique spirit and culture of the LGBTQ+ community.

We would like to extend our thanks to the unwavering support of the brands, companies and organizations who have proven their advocacy and alignment with our community by donating to our mission. Without these sponsors, we would not be able to create these unforgettable experiences and build this massive festival for everyone to share in, for free. Additionally, we give thanks to the local small businesses, independent artists and entrepreneurs, large companies and non-profit organizations that make up our collection of Exhibitors. Your participation gives us an up-close look at those that live and work in our Community, for our Community.

It is my ninth year working with Miami Beach Pride and it is an honor for me to serve as its Festival Director. Our team of rainbow warriors have worked tirelessly to plan, organize, and execute a series of cultural and arts events, exhibits, forums, showcases, and celebrations of Pride spanning a full seventeen days. There are few things that are more gratifying than creating a space for all members of our Community to gather and celebrate in our creation of unity. The hours are long, and the work is hard, but it would not be possible without the collaboration of our valued staff and incredible volunteers. At the end of the day, all the blood, sweat and tears are 100% worth it!

Together with our generous sponsors, numerous exhibitors and parade participants, world class entertainment and various community partners, we are certain that Miami Beach Pride 2023 will create memories that last a lifetime. To many more years of Growing Stronger Together!

From the Director of Grants & Cultural Affairs

Pride Festivals and Parades/marches are among the places and spaces that have long championed social and self-acceptance, achievements, legal rights and visibility. Creating a safe and welcoming space to foster camaraderie and community among LGBTQIA+ humans their friends and allies is central to Miami Beach Pride’s mission, vision, and values As the largest Pride Festival in the South East, Miami Beach Pride signals to the global community at large that the City of Miami Beach is a safe place to live, work and play, a place where LGBTQIA+ diversity is celebrated and lived openly rather than in the shadows

Since its first Pride Festival and Parade, Miami Beach Pride has presented 280 local, national, and international artists For its 17-day event, March 31st through April 16, 2023, we have secured an astounding 100+ LGBTQIA+ artists and allies across disciplines (dance, music, photography, spoken word, visual art) to showcase their craft to elevate their voices and visibility to the community at large

From our signature Progress Pride Flag Raising Ceremony to a queer film screening at Rooftop Cinema Club, to the 10th anniversary edition of the Miss Miami Beach Pride Pageant to our themed Havana Nights VIP Affair with appearances by trailblazing comedian Sandra Bernhard and Grammy Award-winning Cuban singer Albita, to our new Capital One Community stage featuring 25 artists, many performing for the first time in Lummus Park (4/15 – 4/16 page 108), there is something for everyone to participate in, celebrate and enjoy Bring your kids or nieces and nephews to meet the Easter Bunny and create a postcard storybook at Pride’s Easter Picnic in Pride Park (4/8 - page 22), support local LGBTQIA+ artists at the 3rd edition of Queer Art Showcase (4/10 – page 77), find out how trans and trans experts and advocates affected by the current legislative environment in the country are moving against the anti-trans machine (4/12 – Social Justice & Wellness Evening – page 98), publicly cheer on Pride’s Legacy Couples who are participating in the Pride Parade (4/16 - page 86) and grab a noise cancelling headset and relax and chill in our safe and welcoming space for disabled and neurodiverse LGBTQIA+ allies and friends at the Lawn at the Calming Pavilion in Lummus Park during Pride weekend.

I’m confident that there is something for all of you to step out and show YOUR Pride from March 31 through April 16th. See you there!

After 15 years in our steadfast pursuit of our mission to provide a roster of programs and events that promote and foster unity, inclusivity and equality the Miami Beach Pride Board and Staff searched for a theme that encompasses that ideology and honors this organization's journey This three part theme of "Growing Stronger Together" has come at a time the community is unfortunately facing severe adversity With the tumultuous national legislative climate boiling the water for LGBTQ+ people who are simply trying to coexist and live safe healthy lives we felt the need for this imperative event to stand on a foundation of positivity and provide inspiration and encouragement for the threatened members of our community

The first part of the theme indicates and honors the growth we have achieved

Growing Stronger Together

A deep dive into the 2023 Miami Beach Pride festival theme

Not only growing from a one day Pride march into 17 days of events, festival and a parade, but growing together as a family, an organization, a community. This once small team doesn't just consist of a board and staff, but hundreds of volunteers, allies, sponsors and supporters that are instrumental to the execution and success of the organization's mission.

The second part of the theme is not just a statement but a mantra Staring the face of uncertainty and adversity head on, with a collective, unwavering strength is imperative for our community's survival The world must be reminded that we not only deserve to exist but we are a force to be recognized, and no one, we mean no one, has the power to erase that

This strength is most founded in our unity

This final piece of our theme is the glue and the lifeblood of our ability to overcome this adversity Coming together is fundamental in our thriving future and the foundation of what Pride represents Our 170,000 attendees depict the multicolored spectrum of our illuminating community, and it is the most beautiful aspect of our festival to see every letter of the LGBTQIA2S+ represented on the sands of Miami Beach

Growing Stronger Together will be thematically represented by a forest, a jungle, a garden, illuminated in vibrant neon colors. This neon forest represents the multiifaceted glory of our community and the bounty we have cultivated in solidarity Join us April 15 & 16 in Lummus Park to share and celebrate Growing Stronger Together.

ICONIC TODRICK H E A D L I N E R

Sunday Night Headliner

On his fourth studio album Femuline, Todrick sounds like a million dollars. As you might expect from an album featuring an unofficial sequel to “It’s Raining Men” whose chorus goes “get your umbrellas, it’s raining fellas,” soul legend Chaka Khan on a song titled “Fabulosity,” and artwork depicting Todrick straddling a pink unicorn-themed motorbike, Femuline is not exactly a masterpiece of understatement. But it’s a minor masterpiece nonetheless and, among all the fun, froth and fellas, Femuline is Todrick’s most personal album to date.

Of the album’s title, Todrick mentions his own childhood in Texas. “Gay people don't grow up having the privilege of being able to see themselves in The Notebook or Titanic,” he begins. “But so many of us grew up with a specific diva Celine, Cher, Madonna, Gaga, Beyoncé and behind closed doors they put a hairbrush to their mouth and they become that diva. I don’t want it to be behind closed doors

I want to normalize and lift it up. So I came up with the name Femuline to describe how I felt growing up: half feminine, half masculine, and both at once.

34 | 2023 PRIDE GUIDE

TODRICKXFEMULINE

It’s a word that says: ‘I can be all those things, without being any of them. I don't have to identify as one or the other. I can just be fabulous.’”

He’s worked with everyone from Taylor Swift to Beyoncé to Pentatonix, going from national fame on American Idol to international fame via Drag Race, to even greater global fame through a cavalcade of viral videos that pushed him to over half a billion YouTube channel views. That’s before you even factor in his Broadway runs in Kinky Boots, Chicago and Waitress, or his role as dance captain on the BBC’s Greatest Dancer, or the millions of streams across multiple visual albums and EPs, or his own MTV show, or his sixtydate solo tour spanning the US, Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia, or Well, you get the idea.

Fame in the modern era is notoriously hard to define but whichever way you frame it, fame right now looks and sounds a lot like Todrick Hall. “The only time in my life I feel completely understood is when I’m performing,” he reasons. “When I’m making people smile and laugh it’s my food, my energy, my fuel, my drug, my everything.” And the next few years? You probably know Todrick well enough to realize you should never rule anything out, but he says his current goals involve a kids TV show, a Netflix extravaganza, a movie, a book, and his own Broadway production. The king of spontaneity will make it up as he goes along, of course, but the results — frank, funny, joyous, real will be all the better for it.

A D V O C A G R A N D M A R S H

Jazzmun Nichcala Crayton’s career combines show business and advocacy for over 25 years. She has appeared in numerous television and movie roles, most noticeably on Roseanne, the Wayan Brothers Show, the CSI series franchise; the box office hit “The 40 Year Old Virgin”; and a starring role in the first black romcom “Punks” that was the darling of Sundance in 2000.

Jazzmun serves the community through her role as Associate Director at the organization Access Prevention Advocacy Intervention and Treatment (APAIT), where she develops and oversees programs that serve the communities that are underserved and marginalized.

She is also a Board Member of the City of Los Angeles Transgender Advisory Council, which advises elected officials and civic leaders on critical issues facing the Transgender community such as economic development, public awareness, safety, and healthcare accessibility.

In this role, she is able to affect policy changes and legislation that advances the empowerment of the Transgender community and allows them to live fulfilling and enriched lives by influencing Transinclusive housing and employment policies.

Jazzmun is a staunch supporter and award recipient of many of the organizations that serve the communities with the greatest needs such as APAIT, St. John’s Community Health, the Unique Woman’s Coalition, the Los Angeles LGBT Center, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and the Imperial Court of Los Angeles and Hollywood to name a few.

As an extension of her capacity as an HIV Counselor and Associate Director, she serves as the Coordinator of the Midnight Stroll, which brings awareness and needed self-care supplies for street-based sex workers in order to enable and empower them to move from street based sex work into comprehensive community resources such as HIV testing and treatment, housing services, substance use counseling, legal and victim advocacy, and medical services.

Not only does she serve the Transgender community via her professional capacity; she also serves the community through her creative side. As co-producer of the play “Lovely Bouquet of Flowers” and the accompanying documentary “In Full Bloom'', she gives voice to members of the community from all walks of life, and challenges viewers to move past their preconceived stereotypes and see the commonalities that we all share as human beings. Jazzmun explores situations that are easily relatable to the Transgender community that deal with family, inner conflicts, coming out, surgery, hormones, and the complexities of sexual identity and orientation.

“A miracle is just a shift in one’s perception from fear to love” is a mantra that Jazzmun lives by, as it exemplifies the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to rise and achieve our greatest potential with grace and ease if given the chance and a nurturing loving environment because all healing happens at the level of the mind.

Miami Beach Pride asked the 12 selected artists to describe their art and how it inspires conversations about the queer community in South Florida

Diana Escamilla (she/her) @dxestudios

With It’s Just Love I wanted to represent the love of two women who live on different spectrums of the LGBTQ community. Using a combination of rainbow colors and bisexual colors to show their love coming together.

Paz (he/him) @artedepaz

Loud Poetry represents an abstract expressionist work that clearly “screams” all those things we, as people, want to say to be heard and understood. It’s a work of strong strokes, different directions and opinions. Full of colors representing diversity and self-respect. Strong to be heard, strong to stand up and be proud of what we are”

The Moxy South Beach is once again the host for Miami Beach Pride's Queer Art Showcase. Come by, peruse, have a drink and enjoy tacos at their in-house taco bar!

Fletch is a writer and artist living in Miami with his partner Sergio and their tiny dog, Pierre. Drawing since he was a kid, he got his start making comics through Lynda Barry’s teachings, and being member of the Sequential Artists Workshop. A big fan of animation and musicals, he’s developing his latest comic work, Tom The Gay Zombie, into a short film and a rock and roll stage show. Tom the Gay Zombie is a comic strip that I started during pandemic after being furloughed from my job as an event producer. It’s about being an outsider trying to find your place in the world. I use Tom’s zombie parallel universe to look for humor in the joys and struggles we experience as queer people.

@wrieraphoto

The rise in anti-gay and anti-trans bills across the country, specifically in Florida where Governor DeSantis keeps pushing and promoting his anti-LGBTQ agenda, is threatening the civil liberties of members of the LGBTQ community. Through this series of photographs, shot since 2010 at Pride celebration events hosted in Miami, I share a visual story that encourages viewers to build empathy with the LGBTQ community by looking at the spirit of joy and freedom distilled into these colorful and emotion-filled images. Each one of these images shows the bond we can create giving back to the community a day of happiness as a big family where everyone is welcomed. Now more than ever it is a good time to share the history of our County's LGBTQ communities and the far-reach in impacts they've had over the years. It is time to shout out loud “Do Say Gay!” because Queer, we are...

@mgillabs

My collection, entitled Nude Beach, was inspired by my trip to Haulover Beach earlier this year. I wanted to highlight all the different ways I noticed the men interacting with the natural elements of the beach. I decided to use watercolor for this collection because I felt that it helped convey that interaction of man and beach so beautifully. My book on the other hand was a COVID project that has been completed and printed. It's an erotic coffee table book that celebrates the queer community by expressing their bodies in different fantasies they may have or had experienced.

@eddievega

My art pieces could inspire conversations about the importance of creating safe spaces and advocating for the rights and equality of the queer community. The color purple has long been associated with the LGBTQ+ community as a symbol of pride and diversity. The use of gold may symbolize the strength and resilience of the community, while the black forefront may represent the darkness and adversity they have had to overcome. Earth tones symbolize the interconnectedness of all life and the importance of community and crystals and glass may symbolize the diversity and richness of queer identities and experiences

@carlos

This body of work is an abstract exploration of thought, form, material, and texture in which I explore the concept of light and darkness -- literally and metaphorically -- to both portray the experience of being a gay man, but also the journey of spiritual alchemy through which artmaking becomes a catalyst. I hope to inspire hope, resilience, and inspiration among other virtues to my community and thus in turn, catalyze change in the minds of many.

Mister G (he/him) Eddie Vega (he/him) Carols Spartacus (he/him) spartacus

My art is a reflection of who I am and what I stand for - a celebration of individuality, diversity, and love. I believe that through art, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate society. My work is an invitation to explore the complexities of identity and to celebrate the beauty of our differences. It is a reminder that we are all unique and that our diversity is what makes us beautiful. My hope is that through my art, I can create a safe space for dialogue and discussion. A space where we can connect with each other on a deeper level and find common ground, regardless of our backgrounds or beliefs. I want to create a world where we celebrate each other's differences, and where we all have the freedom to express ourselves without fear of judgment or rejection. In summary, my art is a reflection of my journey towards selfexpression and self-discovery, and a celebration of diversity and love. It is a call to embrace our differences and to recognize the value and beauty in every individual.

Love is The Answer 2: We're All in This Together is a further exploration and illustration that everyone is related to each other at the beginning of creation. Every heart I create represents an atomic particle, particles which compose everything in existence. In this way, I am promoting that everyone recognizes their own, and everyone else', and everything's holiness, uniqueness, oneness, and divinity. All of my work is designed to inspire connection for the purpose of eliminating the illusion of disconnection and ending bigotry. My work is designed to inspire, uplift, and create consciousness and cooperation so that there will be peace between people and nations globally and care and harmony for the planet so that it is healthy.

82 | 2023 PRIDE GUIDE

Participating in the first queer art showcase with Miami Beach Pride in 2021 inspired me to work with the Gaythering to host quarterly queer art shows for our community. Participating gives me a chance to meet other artists and continue to grow even more queer arts events in the city. My art in particular is based on the fish and men of south Florida, bringing awareness to our underwater neighbors and queer life around South Florida

Vera uses collage to replicate elements of Miami Beach's art deco architecture. By merging such elements with found imagery of Queerness, Vera depicts his figures in a stationary oasis. Ordinary selfies of interracial couples are exalted, surrounded by colorful flatness, emphasizing moments of the everyday. Pastel tones caress dynamic shapes to rejuvenate editorials and pin-up men throughout the decades. While also dwelling on superficial desires, Vera's work highlights a celebratory aspect of the male nude, letting what's considered vulgar be emancipated.

My art features everyday queer people in everyday situations that break from stereotypes and norms, presenting these narratives as normal everyday stories. A lot of iconography is pulled from our queer community. In this series titled Queer americana archetypes of masculinity are featured and reexamined through a queer lens in sensual situations.
