From the Head of School
Dr. John Davies
Action is the foundational key to all success. - Pablo Picasso Action is the word that comes to mind when I reflect on the 2015-16 school year. As is the case every year, there were numerous actions taken by students and teachers that resulted in successful college placements, stellar achievements in and out of the classroom, recognition on and off the fields and courts, accomplishments in the arts, and service to others on our campus and in the larger community. Many of those actions were shared in the Beacon and Commencement magazines, which you can read online at miamicountryday.org. For the purpose of this publication, I will keep my message focused on efforts that relate to the school’s commitment to provide those spaces and places that best bring the school’s Mission to life. Some include outcomes made possible by philanthropic dollars; others because of the actions of volunteers who shared their time and expertise. The messages shared here reaffirm that the 2015-16 school year was action-packed and resulted in many new resources that support our Mission, including a new state-of-the-art World Languages Center, resurfaced athletic field and track, new Upper and Middle School science labs, a new athletic field, resurfaced track, new bleacher system in the gym, a lacrosse wall, ropes course and climbing wall, and significantly for the entire school, a new parking garage. We support and encourage leadership and volunteerism by our students as part of our Mission and core values. I’m proud to say that our students can find some of the best role models in the many adult volunteers who lead our school. Although critical to the life of the school, much of this service goes largely

unrecognized. Please take the time to read the messages from our Board President and Trustee Chairs of our Standing Board Committees: Building and Grounds, Finance, and Development. Board President, Chris Bellows, Committee Chairs Bud Farrey, Sol Saad, and Sean Clancy all give an inordinate amount of their time and expertise leading committees that make Miami Country Day School the place it is in every way. As Parents’ Association President for two years, Jessica Rodriguez and the many volunteers participating in Parents’ Association projects took actions that contributed over $100,000 to the school. Leading the Annual Giving program every year is a group of parents from all three divisions, alumni and grandparents, who were successful again in reaching their goal of raising over $1.2 million. For the third year, Gerald W. Moore ‘68, working with another enthusiastic group of volunteers, raised over $3.1 million in 2015-16, reaching $12.2 million of the $16.5 million goal for the Campaign for the Arts by June 30, 2016. Finally, the Admission Office has more than 20 parent volunteers who share their time touring and interviewing prospective new families and actively encouraging them to join our community. It is the work of so many people willing to share their time, expertise and resources that make Miami Country Day School the special community that it is. And for that, I am forever grateful. Sincerely,
Dr. John Davies, Head of School
Christopher Bellows Board of Trustees President
Let me please bring your attention to a few pages of this report in particular. Pages 9-11 include an overview of projects that took the leadership and coordination of three of our standing Board Committees and those are Building and Grounds, Finance, and Development. Each one of these committees supports and impacts the work of the others and each one for the purpose of stewarding the resources Miami Country Day School has to operate this $34 million corporation. Thank you to the leadership provided by Bud Farrey, Chair of Building and Grounds; Sol Saad, Chair of Finance; and, Sean Clancy, Chair of Development, to ensure the projects you will read about were on target, on time and on budget. These three individuals are leaders of committees that are comprised of many parents, grandparents, alumni and alumni parents who volunteer their time, expertise and resources to carry out the Mission of Miami Country Day School. Every year after graduation I reflect on the many wonderful achievements, projects, and programs that happened during
the school year and 2015-16 was no exception. While the Commencement Beacon shared the many academic and student focused results, the Annual Report is an opportunity to name and recognize the many people who made it possible for our teachers to teach and to have the resources they need, for our students to learn in a safe and inclusive environment, for traditions to be maintained and new programs to develop. Thank you for being a part of a community that continues to thrive and to strive to be the best that it can be, every year, for young people today and tomorrow.

never replace Jack, they remind us of the love and devotion he had for children, education and Miami Country Day School. Born November 11, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA, in Chestnut Hill, John C. “Jack” DuBois, son of John C. DuBois, Sr. and Claire Maria Crosson, passed away July 20, 2014 in Boynton Beach, Florida. Jack attended high school in Mamaroneck, NY, graduating in 1945. Jack spent some time in the Army post-WWII, serving 18 months in 1946-47. After his service, he returned to college earning a Bachelor of Arts in Government in 1950. Jack eventually settled in Miami and began a long tenure at Miami Country Day School. Respected by his colleagues and loved by his students, Country Day became his professional home for 54 years. Jack offered many talents to those he coached and instructed; he was a history teacher, soccer, baseball, and football coach and served as Alumni Advisor with the Development/Alumni office. Jack was one of those individuals who played a very unique role in the history of Country Day. When Jack joined the faculty in 1954, Country Day was still a very young school. When you consider that his career spanned over 50 years, his remarkable influence on the history of our school really comes into focus. In his remarks at Jack’s memorial service, Dr. John Davies, Head of School, shared that when he was reading the history of the school during plans for the 75th Anniversary Celebration, he was struck by the number of “firsts” that Jack represented. A graduate of Chestnut Hill Academy, one of Philadelphia’s outstanding prep schools, he was the first faculty member at

Country Day who came out of an independent school. He was the first real coach L.B. Sommers and Doc Abele hired. Jack introduced classical language to the curriculum and became the school’s first Latin teacher. And, it was Jack who created the first true MCDS interscholastic program. He was also in the first class inducted into the Spartan Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. A great teacher as well as a gifted athlete, Bill Ellis wrote in The Hibiscus Hedge that, “One cannot be certain whether he was a brilliant scholar who was an outstanding athlete, or a brilliant athlete who happened to be a gifted scholar.” The renowned author and psychiatrist, Karl Menninger, noted that, “What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches.” No doubt when Menninger made his observation he had a teacher like our friend Jack DuBois in mind. It’s the only way to explain why so many students after so many years continued to stay connected with Jack. It wasn’t necessarily the American history or Latin, or the skillful coaching and leadership that brought so many alumni back to campus to see Jack. Those things are certainly important. What was most important though, was the kind of person Jack was. Many of us, alumni and colleagues alike, have such a deep daffection for Jack because we really felt a strong personal connection to who he was and that affection continues to this day. Jack was honored during a memorial service in July 2014 and his memory can be honored today with gifts in support of The John C. DuBois Scholarship Fund at Miami Country Day School.

Truman These words truly embody the mindset of all of our Miami Country Day School committee volunteers. All of whom are working together, without any need for personal reward, to assist the school to achieve our goals and to create the best atmosphere possible for our students. It is so refreshing to work with people who are willing to sacrifice their time and money with a single minded goal of making Miami Country Day School the best school possible now, and for future students that we don’t even know. Building Facilities for the Future
Bud Farrey Building and Grounds Committee Chair With an eye toward the future, Miami Country Day School is busy building first class facilities for teaching and serving our students, faculty, and staff for the 21st century. A number of key facilities and projects moved forward this year demonstrating the School’s unwavering commitment to excellence, and the critical role that our trustees, alumni, parents, and supporters play in securing the long-term success of this great independent school. The 2015-16 fiscal year ushered in about $14 million in new construction.
9
ATHLETIC FIELD, TRACK, AND BLEACHERS $1.6 MILLION
WORLD LANGUAGES CENTER $4 MILLION
A complete renovation of the Koch Family Athletic Complex was undertaken in the months of May, June, and July. This construction work was completed on a very demanding timeline in an effort to not disrupt any of our athletic teams or Summer Programs. The entire artificial surface was replaced with the most advanced turf systems in the industry, and we were able to replace the entire track surface around the field. After almost 30 years of usage, the original bleachers in the Gym were replaced with new automated fiberglass bleachers. The new bleachers provide much more comfortable seating for fans and are compliant with ADA and safety requirements. Our coaches, players, and staff can’t be more proud of the Koch Family Athletic Complex, J. Calvin Rose Athletic Center, and our Aquatics Center. Everyone seems to love the playability of our new synthetic surface (manufactured by DESSO), and the bleachers are a simplified, yet aesthetically-pleasing addition to the J. Calvin Rose Athletic Center. As over 75% of our Middle and High School students participate in athletics, it’s imperative that we continue to provide a safe, state-of-the-art facility for our champions to thrive on. Chuck Sennett, Athletic Director

The new World Languages Center opened its doors in June 2016. This facility, located on the northern boundary of our campus, provides cutting-edge instructional space to prepare students in the area of world languages and international studies. Our students enjoy 11 new classrooms with the finest technology and a long-awaited Language Lab. This facility also provides individual office spaces for all of our World Language faculty. The World Languages Center is now the home of our Middle School COEP program, which enjoys new indoor and outdoor educational spaces and convenient waterfront access. The walk is worth it. Sofia Zamboli ‘17 This building is a culture. Jordan Sale ‘17 The World Languages Center assists us in learning the language because we immediately feel like we enter a different culture when arriving. It provides us a lot of space to move around and for the teachers to be even more innovative. Ian Zigel ‘17
CENTER FOR THE ARTS PARKING GARAGE $8 MILLION
MIDDLE SCHOOL AND UPPER SCHOOL SCIENCE LABS $500,000
The first-ever Parking Garage on school premises officially opened on August 15, 2016. The Center for the Arts Parking Garage allows for 150 student, 75 faculty, and 75 guest parking spaces. This new facility is equipped with security cameras on all floors, as well as 24-hour security guard services. When the much-awaited Center for the Arts opens, the parking garage will allow for new opportunities for drop off and pickup.
One of our historic facilities was rehabilitated this summer. What once housed five-day boarding students, and most recently our Foreign Language classes, is now new Science Labs for our Middle School. A new Upper School Physics Lab was also created by joining two previous math classrooms in the Fischer Building. These new science labs opened with the start of the school year and will transform science education at Miami Country Day School at a time when the demand for training and education in the STEM disciplines is rising around the world. In my 28 years as a MCDS science teacher and now Middle School Director, I could only dream of a science lab space like the labs we now have. I still teach one science class and the lab is just a magnificent facility in which to practice hands-on science. Steve Mathes, Middle School Director

My Bicycle Ride Twinkling stars and jet lights compete in the early morning sky. Newspapers lie on the dewy grass waiting to be read. Mockingbirds sing from high atop telephone wires, Their songs swell as I near them and fade as I pass.
Giving in a Meaningful Way Denise Wilson, Senior Kindergarten teacher, has been teaching at Miami Country Day School for over 30 years. She has been actively involved in the School’s Annual Giving committee by serving as the Lower School Faculty Chair. When she was awarded a parking spot on campus for her 30 years of service, she thought to herself, “Why don’t I give back in a meaningful way? It would sit empty most of the time.” Ms. Wilson rides her bike to school and parks it in the storage area behind her classroom. By giving up her parking spot, it allowed for a family to purchase the on-campus parking in the amount of $10,000, which went back to the school for faculty endowment. Ms. Wilson is an alumni parent of two daughters, Katherine A. Wilson ‘94 and Jennifer E. Wilson Avery ‘90. MCDS is her home and she hopes that she can inspire others to participate, give, and get involved. In her words, “you always feel better after you give.”
Silhouettes of trees lean against the orange and blue canvas of the sunrise. Birds fly in formation, their reflections follow them along the canal. Turtles dive for cover as I top the bridge. There is complete peacefulness. I am almost there. Car doors open and close and voices can be heard nearby. Cheerful good mornings are exchanged. I have arrived. Here, I do what I love to do. At the end of the day, I round the corner of my building and I see beautiful stained glass colored sunsets. Clouds rise in the distance and look like the mountains I wish they were. Good-byes are weary as tired feet walk slowly to waiting cars. Iguanas bask in the last rays of sunlight. Along the banks of the canal, geese settle in for the night. Ibis approach from the north, just skimming the surface of the water. At the last moment, they rise above the foot bridge and I hear the whisper of their wings. Trees cast long shadows now on the pavement before me. I am almost there. My bicycle ride has come full circle. I have arrived to the place I love - my home. Denise Wilson

Making significant impacts throughout the year
7500 Club Members Lead the Way to Success Members of the 7500 Club experienced Cinca de Maya on May 5, 2016, at the home of our incredible hostess, Maya Ezratti. As one of our Founding Members of the 7500 Club and mother of Elle, a 5th grader, Maya enthusiastically created a spectacular evening for our top donors of the 2015/16 Annual Giving Campaign. Not only were our members treated to a classical pianist performance, but Maya’s own daughter, Elle, played a beautiful piece by Adele. Followed by Elle’s outstanding performance was a 7-piece Mariachi Band with strings and brass playing all the favorite tunes of “Cinco de Maya!” All of the members of the 7500 Club tapped their toes to an exciting and fun-filled evening as we celebrated our success for an outstanding year for the Annual Giving Campaign. Founding Dean, Julie Pronesti, spoke to the attendees sharing, “The 7500 Club is a success because of each and every one of you. You have made a significant impact on our school. We have 70 members of the 7500 Club and because of you, we represent 60% of the Annual Giving Campaign. Tom and I can’t thank you enough.” Thank you to all of the 7500 Club members for making a significant impact and raising more than half of the funds raised in the 2015-2016 Annual Giving Campaign. Thank you to Maya Ezratti for hosting this special group of philanthropic leaders at her beautiful home, and thank you to Julie and Tom Pronesti for inviting more members to join this elite club and for leading the way to another amazing year!

A beautiful Miami Evening
Hosts Heidi and Pierre Charalambides with Vanessa and Darren Patz

A beautiful home, delicious seafood paella, many Miami Country Day friends and families and best of all, incredible hosts, were the successful recipe for the Palm Society members at the home of Heidi and Pierre Charalambides. Heidi and Pierre, parents of Zach, 10th grade, Kalel and Eloise, 2nd grade and Alina, Senior Kindergarten, hosted a wonderful evening for our special members of the Palm Society. Our families were able to mingle and enjoy each other’s company and celebrate their part in the success of the Annual Giving Campaign. Julie Pronesti, Dean of the 7500 Club and Palm Society member, thanked everyone for their gifts of $2,500 or more. Julie passionately thanked our hosts and our members for their loyalty to Miami Country Day School. Pierre also thanked everyone for coming and for supporting our school. We all raised a toast to both the Charalambides for hosting this wonderful event and to each member of the Palm Society for helping to raise over $1,200,000 for our students, teachers and the amazing programs that happen every day at school.
The Founders’ Circle
Valerio Toyos and Janet Pomares-Toyos
Miami Country Day School Founders’ Circle members who donated $1,500 or more to the Annual Giving Campaign were invited to the historic National Hotel in the Spring. Delphine Dray, mother of Chad, 12th grade and twins, Swan and Pearl, 8th grade, graciously hosted this event at her amazing Art Deco Hotel for the second year. Our Founders’ Circle members were treated at the Aqua Club alongside native tropical palm trees and Miami Beach’s longest infinity-edge pool. Guests unwound under a moonlit night, enjoying fresh Mediterranean countryside cuisine and customized inspired cocktails. Dr. Davies personally thanked Delphine Dray for her hospitality and the members of the Founders’ Circle for their generosity in helping the Annual Giving campaign raise over $1,200,000 for our school.

M C D GIVESDAY 12.11.15 MIAMI COUNTRY DAY – GIVES DAY ANNUAL GIVING
Thanks to our very enthusiastic Annual Giving volunteers and our very generous families for making GivesDay a huge success!
26
Be part of the Season of Giving. Be Counted. Be part of our Family of Givers. Be Generous. The Annual Giving Executive Board and Team rallied together with much enthusiasm on December 11, 2015 for our fourth Annual MCDS GivesDay. Annual Giving volunteers and their children were both in the North Lot and the Lower School Turn-Around early in the morning to pass out flyers and hold up signs encouraging families who had not participated in Annual Giving to go online and GIVE! December 11 was the day to participate and join the Annual Giving Family of Givers! After much fun and with James Bergman as Sammy the Spartan, our volunteers headed off to the Lower School Media Center to start the many phone conversations about the importance of donating to the Annual Giving Campaign and supporting our school. The message was simple. Be part of the Season of Giving. Be Counted. Be part of our Family of Givers. Be Generous.

Philanthropy Thank you for being a part of philanthropy at Miami Country Day School. Because of you, we did it. Giving of your time, expertise and philanthropic gifts to Miami Country Day School, makes our community a better place. Your support leads to positive outcomes that truly impact our students and teachers every day.
We could not have surpassed our Annual Giving goal of $1.2 million without the efforts of our amazing team of parent and grandparent volunteers. Their dedication was shown though many conversations, phone calls, emails, phonathons, and GivesDay. Thank you to our Campaign Committee who has helped us raise $13,625,837 to date for the Campaign for the Arts. 28
