Welcome! Miami Country Day School’s Summer Academies are the new face of Summer Studies. With course offerings in S.T.E.A.M., Inbound, College Prep, Languages, Tutoring, and Adult Courses, we truly have something for students of all ages. Part of our school’s Mission is to prepare students to be lifelong learners, and our Summer Academies are our Mission in practice. If you have questions or would like to take a tour of our campus, please let us know. We would like nothing more than to share our love for Country Day summers with you and your family.

S.T.E.A.M. Academy S.T.E.A.M., or Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math, is a powerful suite of courses designed for 21st Century learners. Humans are, by nature, insatiably curious. At MCDS’ Summer Academies, we nurture inquisitive minds that understand that the questions asked are just as important as the answers they yield.

June 22 – July 3 | Monday – Friday | 9 AM – 3 PM | Grades SK – 5 • Practice the fundamentals of tap, jazz, hip-hop, and ballet • Perform in a Frozen-themed dance production and singalong for an audience at the Nathan Hurst ’89 Amphitheater! July 20 – 24 | Monday – Friday | 9 AM – 12 PM | Grades SK – 5 • Become an artist, architect, engineer, inventor, and maker! • Launch rockets, make catapults, build structures with fun materials, tinker with real tools, make a simple circuit, design marble mazes, and learn computer coding June 22 – 26 | Monday – Friday | 9 AM – 3 PM | Grades 5 – 9 • Gain exposure to programming fundamentals and apply them to Electronic Guitars, Drones, Arduino Development Boards, Remote Controlled Vehicles, BattleBots—even a Mini Segway! • The week includes both indoor and outdoor activities and culminates in the popular BattleBot Competition! • Robot platforms include Lego Mindstorms NXT and EVS, Tetrix

Inbound Incoming Upper School students seeking an opportunity to familiarize themselves with life as an MCDS student look no further! Our Inbound Program prepares new students with lessons on team building, independent school education, leadership, and school spirit.

June 8 – 12 | Monday – Friday | 9 AM – 3 PM | Grades 9 – 12 • Join fellow incoming Upper School students as you take your first step toward becoming a Spartan! • Get acclimated with life as a Country Day student as you connect with current students, faculty, administration, and even alumni • Enjoy indoor and outdoor activities with future classmates • Welcome your parent(s) to join you on Friday for family sessions that introduce them to the MCDS Community

College Prep Academy We strive to unlock the world of selective college admissions. Our college prep classes hold the key to that wonder. SAT and ACT Test Prep courses are taught by two expert instructors: one Math specialist and one Verbal instructor to ensure that students are taught by the very best in each subject area.

Grades 6 – 8 Creative Writing

June 1 – 17 | Mon. & Wed. | 10 AM – 12 PM | Grades 8 – 12 • The focus of the course is on the rudiments of voice, character, setting, point of view, plot, and lyrical use of language • Class readings include a wide range of fiction excerpts that inform the written exercises to help students shape their own sense of craft • This instructor earned her BFA from Cornell University and her MFA in creative writing from Columbia University

Persuasive Writing $250

June 2 – 18 | Tues. & Thurs. | 10 AM – 12 PM | Grades 8 – 12 • This persuasive writing class is designed to focus, illuminate, clarify, and augment our student’s argumentative writing • Explore and learn the construction of a persuasive paper from foundation to facade as it develops from a point of view to a convinced reader • This instructor earned her BFA from Cornell University and her MFA in creative writing from Columbia University

Adult Education Academy Part of our school’s Mission is to prepare students to be lifelong learners, and our Summer Academies are our Mission in practice. MCDS faculty and staff are especially encouraged to consider options that may pertain to their professional growth plans. Adult Education Academy is open to all students ages 18 & up.

Summer Workout: $25/class Have an E.P.O.C. Experience!

June 8 – 19 | Monday – Friday | 9:15 – 10:15 AM • Every hour will be a new workout experience, focusing on high impact interval training, and circuit • Produce Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption (E.P.O.C. aka after-burn) which means 16 – 24 hours after class, you are still benefiting from your workout by boosting metabolism and burning calories at a faster speed than normal • This class is for all levels, and every movement can be modified. Please bring weights and a mat (if you have one). Comfortable clothes are recommended.

Excel Professional Development Workshop $225

July 27 – 31 | Monday – Friday | 9 AM – 12 PM • This workshop will cover a wide range of skill sets and will be personalized to address individual goals • Better manage your own information: examine information in simple, visual ways and perform complex analyses • Topics include: information sorting, graphs and charts, pivot tables, formulas, macros, forms, conditional formatting, functions, automation, manipulating lists and text, analyzing grades and other data, visual basic, filters, and what-if scenarios Summer Academies 19

Our Academic and Test Prep tutors are a highly specialized mix of private tutors and teachers who customize their approach to each student; this differentiation and individualization facilitates understanding and maximizes academic success. Our Tutors are masters of their specialty and love to teach it. We offer tutoring on campus by appointment in a variety of subjects for all grade levels. Call us and we will meet your needs.

Summer Policies Drop off & Parking Attendance & Students should check in at Tardies the North Gate (see page 27) before heading to class unless instructed otherwise by their summer faculty instructor. Parking is available for students in the North Parking Lot.

Students must be on time. If they arrive late, they must check in at the Summer Camp Office (see page 27) before heading to class.

Refunds

Severe Weather

All deposits are non-refundable. The remainder of the course’s Summer Academies courses cost can be refunded as may be cancelled due to severe follows**: weather. Visit the Summer • Courses that run from Programs website and Miami June 1 – July 3 can be Country Day School website refunded until May 1, 2015. for announcements concerning cancellations. • Courses that run from July 6 – July 31 can be Behavior and refunded until June 1, 2015.

Dress Code

Students are expected to behave and dress in a manner that will not disrupt the learning environment. Failure to so may lead to dismissal from the course.

Refunds can be issued if there is insufficient enrollment or an emergency with the student. Refund requests must be submitted in writing and will be considered at the discretion of the Summer Academies Director.

**Boston to New York College Tour is not eligible for refunds.
