Miami Country Day School’s Auxiliary Programs fulfill the school’s mission of educating the whole child and promoting lifelong learning.
“It is impossible to honor our commitment to the whole child without the arts.” – Dr. John Davies, Head of School At Miami Country Day School, the arts are integral to our mission. The opening of our new Center for the Arts this year finally made it possible for the arts to take center stage. On May 3, 2017, as the MCDS a la Indiana (pictured above) was being dropped into its current home, I felt giddy knowing we would debut new arts camps to fill a longtime void in our auxiliary programs. That initial excitement only grew as our Day Camp reached record-breaking numbers but still fit comfortably for our Morning Blast Off! in the new facility. Now, as we begin planning for the coming year, I know the arts will be as permanent a fixture in auxiliary programs as the MCDS a la Indiana is for the campus. Our ability to introduce two arts camps this summer was made possible with help from parent, trustee Vanessa Abramowitz and local partners MAD Dance & Musical Theater and Live! Modern School of Music. We are only able to continue offering quality enrichment opportunities to the South Florida community year round due to the resourcefulness,
passion, and work ethic of all of our individual program directors and their staff. Finally, the show would not go on without the tireless commitment of a rock star admin team— Jacquie Niang, Chris Polite, and Nick Marcelin, thank you!—and the guidance and support provided by the Auxiliary Programs Committee of the Board of Trustees, Chris Bellows, Dr. Davies, Gary Butts, and our various partners on and off campus. As you peruse the pages of this annual report, I invite you to learn more about our new arts programs in an article written by one of our operations interns on page 34 and consider this and other ways you can join the cast at Miami Country Day. – Christian A. Martell, Director of Auxiliary Programs & Corporate Operations

GET
moving BY: DWIGHT SPENCER, JR. Learning How to Take the Heat There is nothing like the humid heat of a South Florida summer to show a soccer player what they are made of and how much they can handle. Our Simple Soccer Camp, held mostly outdoors, is set on the foundation of the Code of Respect that promotes responsibility, character, and achievement. Every camper is expected to strive, follow and uphold the standards of the Code of Respect. Simple Soccer Director, Jeff Watson strongly believes “there are things that can be learned on an athletic field that are not taught in the four walls of a classroom. The camp is designed to support individual player development with skills competitions that include dribbling, juggling, passing, shooting and more. At the end of each week, campers earn awards based on their
performance and how well they abide by the Code of Respect and the mission of building strong leaders on and off the field. “It’s a foundation for showing campers a better way to be a better person,” says Fred Carpenter, who is a Simple Soccer Camp Counselor and Head Coach of the Middle School Girls Varsity Team during the school year. At the end of the day, Simple Soccer Camp is also a great way to enjoy the most played sport around the world and Scott Brennan, 9, agrees: “I love how we get to play (soccer) games every day!” LAX makes a comeback Across the field, lacrosse players cradle and practice their throws with expert precision. Lacrosse, or LAX as it is commonly shortened to, is a very popular sport in the Miami Country Day community. Every season close to 70 student-athletes compete for a spot on our middle school and varsity teams. After almost five years of not running lacrosse camps, the popular sport finally made it back into our summer offerings. Lacrosse campers learned how to become skilled players mastering the basics such as cradling, raking, and how to properly catch and throw a ball. Meanwhile, some of our varsity lacrosse players volunteered their time this summer to introduce the sport to participants of Breakthrough Miami on the Miami Country Day campus. The players made it possible for fifteen Breakthrough Scholars to learn
how to play the game through an elective course during their summer institute. The ultimate success based on numbers along was our new adult lacrosse league. 28 adults had the opportunity to remain competitive throughout the months of June and July by playing in the league led by Chaka Bainbridge, Director of Lacrosse Camp and League. The lacrosse adult league offered community members a fun way to stay fit and socialize, in a fashion similar to the Masters program in Aquatics. Hoop Dreams Start Young On the hardwood, Coach Ochiel Swaby and current and former members of his four-time defending state championship teams work with campers on agility, defense, shooting, and basketball IQ. As opposed to past summers, however, this year’s basketball camp is open to campers as young as five. Camp ages previously ranged from 8 - 18. “We wanted to get younger kids as they have the potential to be great starting at such a young age,” says Swaby, or “Coach O” as most of his players know him. “That’s why we purchased the adjustable rims.” New adjustable rims fastened to the gymnasium’s regulation-height basketball hoops are what made it possible for the camp to expand its age range this year. Athletics & Auxiliary Programs Coordinator Christopher Polite in consultation with Coach O conducted the research to purchase the rims during the school year. The rims will be stored safely for use
in upcoming summers. 10-year-old basketball camper Jalen Kotaik, who has been with the camp for three summers now, has seen tremendous growth in his game. “My shots have gotten better, I’ve been playing better. Basketball Camp has unique ways of teaching the game,” he said. Jalen’s goal is to play on an advanced basketball team soon. Never Too Late to Start Swimming In the water, our aquatics program offers a range of activities for the youngest of children and adults in the summer and school year. Miami Country Day Aquatics is geared towards training and guiding swimmers to develop skills needed to attain goals in a safe and fun environment. The Masters program provides an opportunity for adults to stay in shape, train for triathlons, or simply get active in the water. The Summer Swim Team, recognized by USA Swimming, gives young swimmers the opportunity to develop greater competitive skills. There is also a Water Polo Team that competes on weekends and a learn-to-swim program. This summer marked the second year our aquatics program partnered with Breakthrough Miami to teach Breakthrough scholars how to swim and the importance of water safety. The idea of a swim and water safety program was a vision spearheaded by Chief Operating Officer Gary Butts and with the help of his wife Peggy and a few other organizers the vision has grown. As a result of their effort, Breakthrough scholars will have an opportunity to swim each summer.
“They stopped at no cost to make sure this program was a success, it’s amazing to know that people care about the well-being of our scholars,” said Kenneth Garrett, Associate Site Director of Breakthrough’s Miami Country Day location. While the swim program began through volunteer efforts, it is now gaining traction at other sites and several other community leaders have joined in the effort to provide water safety instruction to Breakthrough scholars. “There was a third-party organization that believes in our mission of education, who also believes that water safety is an important facet of life,” said Garrett. The third-party organization, Diversity in Aquatics, is an international nonprofit organization whose goal is to decrease the rate of drowning victims worldwide. Members of historically underrepresented communities and other vulnerable populations are much more likely to lack access to pools and water safety instruction. With so many hands on deck, Breakthough Miami scholars will be able to enjoy the pool at Miami Country Day School for years to come.
LACROSSE CAMP & LEAGUE This summer, Coach Chaka Bainbridge provided boys and girls of all levels with instruction on proper lacrosse techniques including passing, catching, shooting and dodging. Lacrosse campers developed their skills through small games and then progressed into full field situations. Our new adult lacrosse league provided an excellent, fun way for community members to practice the sport and stay fit. 2017 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS • 28 lacrosse players participated in the inaugural adult league • Lacrosse Camp ran for the first time since 2012-2013 • Lacrosse Camp enrollment was open to both boys and girls for the first time in MCDS history Chaka Bainbridge, Director of Lacrosse Camp & League | summercamp@miamicountryday.org
PLAYHOUSE90 Playhouse90 provided our families with extra flexibility in drop off and pick up times, while giving our campers extra time for fun and play with their summer camp friends. Activities varied and were selected by the camper. Some activities included: board games, sidewalk art, reading, coloring, freeze tag, mini golf, and themed movie watch parties. Playhouse90 is less structured to provide campers with the relaxation time they need before and after a full day at our camps.

The late Edgar Degas, a French artist known for
depicting dancers especially his famous ballerinas, once said, “art is not what you see, it’s what you make others see.” And many people see the arts at Miami Country Day as an important part of our mission to educate the whole child. As art is crucial to our vision of holistic education, this summer Miami Country Day partnered with local dance and music schools to offer two new arts programs in our brand new Center for the Arts. Our partners, MAD Dance and Musical Theater and LIVE! Modern School of Music, provided campers with the tools they needed to become skilled dancers and rocking musicians. Live! Music campers learned how to compose and write music through group ensembles and breakout sessions for individual improvement. Live! Music Camp at Miami Country Day School encouraged campers of all skill levels to be interested and committed musicians. MAD Dance and Musical Theater Camp was offered for six weeks this first summer. Instruction for the intensive two-week camps ranged from ballet to tap dance, vocals to monologues. Ms. Jessica Mylene Drago, ballet technique and pointe instructor says, “we instill in our campers the idea that they can be great. We know it’s hard for some to come on a stage and perform, but I always tell them that butterflies in your stomach is a good thing.” MAD Dance and Musical Theater Campers learned with some of the best choreographers and teachers in the industry, as evidenced by the studio’s recent award as Best Dance School in the nation in 2017. Participants from both programs had family and friends feeling the beat during end-of-session performances on the stage of our brand new Center for the Arts.
LIVE! MUSIC CAMP Miami Country Day School partnered with Live! Modern School of Music, a music education leader in the South Florida community and member of the Berklee School of Music Network, for two weeks of Live! Music Camp. The session consisted of 4 core subjects – composition, songwriting, sectionals, and band. Campers learned how to express themselves musically, enhance their technical playing abilities, and work in unison with other musicians in a true band setting. 2017 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS • At the end of the 2-week session, students and their instructors put together a repertoire of songs they showcased in a live performance for family and friends in the new Center for the Arts. LIVE! Modern School of Music | summercamp@miamicountryday.org
MAD DANCE & MUSICAL THEATER Miami Country Day School partnered with MAD Dance and Musical Theater to offer 6-weeks of summer intensive camps. Summer Intensives boast more than 20 hours of dance classes taught by in-demand faculty and guest instructors. Styles include jazz technique, ballet, theater, contemporary, tap, improvisation, hip-hop and more! Be a part of the MAD excitement this summer and don’t miss this opportunity to study with some of the premier theater and dance teachers and choreographers in the industry. 2017 PROGRAM HIGHTLIGHTS • At the end of each two-week session, our MAD Dancers showcased their new talents to friends and family with shows featuring excerpts from: Peter Pan, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, and others. SIMPLE SOCCER CAMP Simple Soccer Camp is designed to help players ages 6-17 develop their full potential by providing them with a solid foundation of soccer skills. Led by FACA Hall of Fame Coach Jeff Watson, the camp embraces training for the individual player in all aspects of soccer, starting with personal and technical development. Campers take part in skill competitions in juggling, dribbling, shooting, passing, and small-sided games. In addition to soccer skills, campers learn life lessons in dedication to goals, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
Jeff Watson, Director of Simple Soccer Camp | summercamp@miamicountryday.org
Campers received game tickets to the Paris-Saint Germain vs Juventus soccer match on July 26 at Hard Rock Stadium.
Simple Soccer Camp volunteers were current members of the Girls and Boys Varsity Soccer Teams.
Coach Watson and staff worked with the Miami FC and at the Barcelona vs. Real Madrid soccer match, otherwise known as “El Clasico.
TECH CAMP In an ever-connected world, technology provides endless opportunities for discovery, empowerment, and, of course, a whole lot of fun! Our Tech Campers learned how to build and program basic structures, create their own mini-movie sets and animated movies, and explored what building underwater entails.

TOP FLIGHT Drones are perfect vessels for children. They develop a passion for science and produce a new perspective of the world they see every day. Top Flight Pilots learned how to apply aerial planes, drones, and rockets in different fields. Campers also participated in other activities, including swimming, sports, photography, science, game room, and more. Our two-week Top-Flight program introduced students to the world of flying using drones, rockets, friendly competition, and aeronautics. 2017 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS • Expanded program including science, virtual reality, film-making, and our first annual Air Show • Field trip to a local aerial enthusiast location Nicholas Marcelin, Director of Top Flight | summercamp@miamicountryday.org
Operations Interns Our operations interns provide invaluable support for various aspects of our school operations and in particular for our summer programs. Past interns have gained experience in construction and facilities management, bookkeeping, event planning, marketing, and of course teaching. Interns are paired with a full-time school employee working in their area of interest at the school and receive instruction and guidance from them throughout the summer months. With the internship now in its sixth year, we at Miami Country Day School’s Auxiliary Programs would like to take this time to reflect on the wonderful interns we have had thus far. On the right, we showcase the biographies of our most recent interns-- Giselle, Doreen, and Dwight. We are ever grateful for their many contributions and for ensuring that our campers had a safe, but fun summer.
