Lower School After School Club Program

Miami Country Day School is proud to invite your children to join in our After School Club Program. These clubs are specifically designed for our Lower School students and are a wonderful way for them to participate in an organized after school activity. The Winter 2018 Session is now open for registration for students in grades PK3-5th. This program alleviates the need to carpool to off-campus, after school activities. Each club is taught by a professional and is geared toward enhancing your child’s overall school experience. DISMISSAL INFORMATION Clubs take place Monday through Friday from 3:15 PM to 4:15 PM. At school dismissal time, all children are sent to the club sign-in room. When clubs are finished, dismissal is in the Lower School turnaround. Every student must be signedout. They will be supervised until 4:30PM. Children not picked up by 4:30 PM will be taken to Extended Day. This is a separate program for which you will be billed accordingly. PARENTS: PLEASE READ ALL THE INFORMATION IN THIS BROCHURE. IT WILL ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS THAT YOU MAY HAVE INCLUDING DATES AND TIMES (BEGINNING AND END DATES AS WELL AS DAYS OFF) Please make sure you register on CampBrain. This will be the only way you will be able to register for After School Clubs. It is an online registration and payment portal. Important Registration Procedures At Miami Country Day School, your child’s experience in our After School Club Program is very important to us. We strive to make each experience enjoyable and safe. Any rules that we institute are to ensure your child’s safety and enjoyment of the club program above all else. Please refer to the Lower School Handbook for specific behavior and expectation policies. Again, we must emphasize that these rules are put in place for your child’s safety. Complying with all rules and policies will make the After School Club experience more enjoyable for all. Please help us continue to make the club program one of the best! ENROLLMENT INFORMATION Clubs begin the week of January 9, 2018. (Please note there is no school on January 8, 2018). Clubs do fill up quickly; therefore, once a club is filled, there will be no further enrollment. There will be no refunds after the first week (you will be charged for the first week that your child attended). There are no exceptions to this policy. SIGNING OUT OF CLUBS At MCDS, our students’ security is of the utmost importance. Therefore, each club member must be signed out. If picking up early, you must notify the Director of After School Clubs, Betsy Kaplan by email or phone. CLUB MEMBERS ONLY Some students may plan to go home with friends after clubs, or have a friend with him/her who is not registered for our club program. These students are not permitted to join in a club, even for one day. Only registered club members may attend club sessions. LATE PICK-UP The pick-up time after clubs is by 4:30 PM. Any child that is not picked up by the scheduled time will be taken to the Extended Day Program and be charged the additional fee accordingly. Notification from a parent is required for the following: •

If your child is to be picked up by someone other than yourself

If your child is to go home with another child

If your child is not attending clubs on a particular day

If you would like to make a scheduling change concerning clubs

2. All clubs are on a first-come, first serve basis. There is limited space in many of the clubs, so please sign up early. No exceptions. 3. If a student does not wish to continue in a club after the first meeting, you are entitled to a refund for the remaining weeks. Immediately notify Betsy Kaplan, After School Clubs Director, if your child wishes to withdraw after the first meeting. 4. Students must be picked up promptly when clubs are finished or they will be taken to the Extended Day Program and charged an additional fee. Thank you for your cooperation!

After School Club Descriptions Winter Session 2018 Acting and Comedy 101 | Tuesday, Grades SK-2 | Thursday, Grades 3-5 Kids will laugh their way through this class designed to introduce children to the basics of acting, performing and improvisational theatre with an audience and building self-esteem. New York City’s Award-Winning Improvisation and Acting School for kids, Red Carpet Improv, is now being offered at Miami Country Day School! Voted Best of NY Magazine and Timeout Kids.

American Doll Club| Thursday, Grades SK-5 There will be sewing and craft activities while you will learn about different periods in history through American Girl Dolls. The doll that will be featured will be determined by Ms. Joanne at the first meeting of the club. Below are some examples of what has been taught in the past: Kaya - Native American Doll from 1764. Ms. Joanne will take you back in time through stories, crafts movies and more. Learn facts and trivia from the 1700’s. Josephina, a Spanish American girl from 1824. Kit Kittredge, the American Girl from the time of the great depression. Samantha and Rebecca from the 1900’s. We will learn about Victorian traditions, the impact of new inventions, and an important time in immigration history. Students are encouraged to bring any American Girl Doll or any other well-loved 18 inch doll they have to this fun and educational club, but dolls must stay in backpacks during the school day.

Arduino Robots | Thursday, Grades 1-5 Arduino Robots is a hands-on program that uses Arduino Kits Robots for children to learn programming, electronics and more. Students will build different types of robots with similar Arduino boards that allow them to learn about sensors, motors, and connections. These Arduino kits are actual programmable robots for children. When we say real programmable, we mean it!!! Students can program using a compatible Scratch 2-based software (Precoding).

Art of Engineering| Wednesday Grades 2-5 Where the art of engineering becomes alive. Perfect for creative and ingenious kiddos. From designing propeller cars to building rockets, from constructing roller coasters to creating a masterpiece, the world of engineering and art intertwine. Join us once a week for a fun opportunity to utilize your creativity, cleverness, and ingenuity as you build, create, and grow! I KNOW SCIENCE was voted “Favorite Enrichment Program” by Broward Family Life Magazine!

Athletics Combo | Wednesday, Grades SK-5 Fired Up Athletic Force brings their education of sports to our students through science and expertise. Every three weeks they will choose a sport and educate our students with drills and games so each child will learn how to play individually as well as with a team, how to play each sport, and the rules of the game. Spots go fast for this class, so sign up before it’s too late!

Broadcasting-Spartan TV | Tuesday, Grades 4-5 (LIMITED TO 10 STUDENTS) Broadcasting Club is an exciting way to have loads of fun while learning important skills such as public speaking, interviewing, and teamwork. Fourth and fifth grade participants will enjoy alternating jobs of news reporting, sound operations, camera operations, script writing, and editing. If you see yourself as a ham in front of the camera or a super techie operating sophisticated news equipment, then this is the club for you!

Beginning Ballet | Grades Tuesday, SK-2

Nexplore Ballet lessons use creative concepts, dance games and exercises to spread the joy of movement and the fundamentals of rhythm, build spatial awareness and coordination. Students will establish a strong foundation of athletic, social, and artistic skills; and build a wonderful appreciation for the art, sport, and discipline of dance. No Prior Knowledge required. Nexplore Ballet is led by top-notch professional instructors. NOTE: Ballet shoes recommended.

Beginning Hebrew | Tuesday, Grades SK-5 Hebrew Club is an exciting and innovative youth program. Through hands-on activities and games, students learn the Hebrew language and the culture that surrounds it. Hebrew Club is an invigorating environment where children enjoy the educational journey and the cultural experience

Beginning Lacrosse | Tuesday, Grades 2-5 Lacrosse is one of the oldest team sports in America, suit up and come find out why it has become one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Lacrosse combines the basic skills used in soccer, basketball, and hockey into one fast paced, high scoring game. Athletes will learn all the fundamentals of stick handling, cradling, passing, and shooting, all in a fun, non-checking environment. Our staff will ensure that students not only learn the sport of lacrosse, but also important life skills such as respect, teamwork, and discipline. Every athlete will come away with a deep understanding of the game and its traditions. Equipment is provided.


Beginning Mandarin | Friday, Grades SK-5 The after school Mandarin course is designed for students (ages 5-10 years) who are interested in learning Mandarin Chinese. Students will learn the basic structures of the Mandarin Chinese language with emphasis on developing fundamental skills (listening and speaking) of spoken Mandarin Chinese with application to a number of familiar everyday topics. Students will learn to understand and to use basic sentence patterns and vocabulary using pinyin (spelling words in Mandarin using the western alphabet). Students will also write using modern Chinese characters. NOTE: This club ends on March 15th.

Cheerleading | Monday, Grades SK-5 Fired Up Athletic Force brings it expertise in cheerleading to MCDS. Tumble, Dance, Cheer, and Perform! Looking for a fun team sport this session? Don’t miss out on the chance to be a part of the Fired Up Cheerleading Team! We will be working on cheers, routines, exercise, conditioning, tumbling, and stunting. Cheerleading not only trains you physically, cheerleaders will learn the ins and outs of teamwork, accountability, and even build self-esteem. Sign up now to reserve your spot.

Clay World | Monday, Grades SK-5 | Tuesday, Grades PK3-JK4 This program explores the art of clay modeling and character design by using your hands as sculpting tools and polymer clay as the medium. This course will improve the students’ fine motor skills and artistic capabilities. Different techniques will be taught, such as pointillism, spreads and textured clay, among others. Three different course levels will be given: basic, medium, and advanced. All supplies included.

Cooking Club | Wednesday, Grades PK3-JK4 | Thursday, Grades SK-5 “We don’t change the dish; we change the ingredients.” Students will create dishes focusing on ingredients. Having a good understanding of what ingredients actually are will be the central message. Children will learn an understanding of processed foods vs. real foods, artificial flavors vs. artificial colors, sugar and why it is so addictive, farm-to-table concept, grass fed animals vs. caged fed animals, plant based food diets and its benefits, and most importantly, family bonding at the table. Cooking with Kids Miami was voted one of the best cooking schools in Miami by Miami New Times!

Experimental Photography | Wednesday, Grades 2-5 Photography is the perfect way to visually express ourselves. Come and explore this course! With photography being the main element, our young photographers will learn and engage in age appropriate photo projects. There will be science along with the fun of photography lumped into one. This is photography at its best!

Flag Football| Tuesday, Grades SK-2| Friday, Grades 3-5 Our motto is “education through recreation.” We encourage all students to be the best person and athlete that they can be. Students will learn flag football fundamentals as well as the knowledge and skills to take them to the next level. Teamwork, passing, catching, running, handing-off and kicking are all part of this club game plan. Learn the basics, play games, grab the flags. Touchdown!! Any future NFL’ers out there?

Golf | Tuesday & Friday, Grades SK-5 (LIMITED TO 12 STUDENTS ONLY) The after school golf club has been designed to introduce children in SK through 5th grade to the great game of golf. Each lesson will focus on a specific aspect of the game. The children will learn the proper fundamentals in order to develop the skills necessary to play the game. It is not necessary for the children to have their own clubs, but it is strongly recommended. A putter, driving club, and 7-iron are sufficient. Children learn through the stroke of the day, short game, and putting instruction. They are drilled on basic strokes, iron and wood instruction, footwork, and the rules of golf and scoring. Competitive drills and games and supervised course play are bonus features. Instruction is led by Pro Ricardo Rondero from the Miami Shores Country Club. Transportation by Americanus Bus Service to and from the Miami Shores Golf Course. NOTE: Please make sure to fill out the Golf waiver. This can be found on CampBrain when registering. Your child will not be able to attend without this form.

How to DJ with Ms. Christina | Thursday, Grades SK-5 Ever wanted to learn how to DJ? In this class you will learn the beginning steps to becoming a real DJ. You will learn how to sync, read and analyze music while adding your own special techniques to your mixes. Become a pro with Serato the world’s leading DJ Music software used by the most popular DJs. Get familiar with a Numark Mixtrack Pro 2 an all-inclusive DJ controller with an expanded layout of professional controls and turntables. You’ll be able to record your own mixes, which will be converted into MP4s so you can upload to any music source and jam on.

I Know Science: The Lab | Tuesday, Grades SK-5 Where today’s play becomes tomorrow’s passion! If your child loves to do experiments, then this is the perfect opportunity for him/her to join us as we explore all areas in science. Join us once a week as we explore the wonders and beauty of science. Kids investigate, get messy, learn, but most of all have fun in areas such as physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, and countless others.


Junior I Know Science | Monday, Grades PK3-JK4 If your little scientist loves to do experiments, then this is the perfect opportunity to explore, hands-on, the beautiful world of science. We meet weekly and expose the littlest to the wonders and beauty of science through age appropriate experiments. Along with our fabulous instructor, kids explore using the scientific method, yes, even at this young age. They’ll explore, investigate, get messy, learn, but most of all have fun! Mad Dance: Hip Hop | Wednesday, Grades SK-5 This class is designed for the kids who just love to move and groove! This class combines Jazz and Hip Hop in a fun and age appropriate way! We learn the basic techniques of both genres, and create exciting and energetic dances. Our classes fill dancers with energy and excitement while focusing on Jazz and Hip Hop technique from classic styles to new modern aspects. This MAD class combines some modern dance, Hip Hop skills and acrobatics in a way that fuses all styles together for a fun and educational hour. Our teachers will create a fun hour that your dancer will love to attend each week.

MAD Musical Theater | Wednesday, Grades 2-5 The Musical Theater Program allows students a chance to discover their individual talents and interests while exploring the basics of singing, dancing, and acting. Musical Theater classes focus on fundamental performing arts skills, emphasizing creative expression and fun. This program works on developing children’s abilities in singing, dancing, and acting. The instructor focuses on each skill individually and then work to put them all together in a fun, creative and expressive way. The activities in this class are geared toward improving and enhancing the student’s self-image and self-confidence. Imagination and creativity are essential components in this class. Through the use of age appropriate materials, the instructor’s ultimate goal is for each student to enjoy what he/she is learning through doing and to gain an appreciation for the arts.

Nexplore Art| Friday, Grades PK3, JK and SK Nexplore Art is an interactive art program that explores fundamental art concepts such as color mixing, drawing, shading, texture and more. Throughout the course, students will make fun, creative and age-appropriate projects using different media such as acrylic paint, water color, charcoal and oil pastels. Hands-on activities allow students to develop a joy in learning art, enhance their creativity and build upon their own strengths and interests.

Nexplore Games | Monday, Grades SK-5 Nexplore Games is an innovative program that uses an internationally-acclaimed selection of strategy and mind games to enhance 21st century life skills and teach students how to think, rather than what to think. Nexplore Games is the bridge that connects the world of games to the real world. During the course, students reflect and learn meta-cognitive models, which are then applied to all walks of life and scholastic achievements. Play-Learn-Apply.

Painting Fiesta | Wednesday, Grades SK-5 This season, students enrolled in Art Club (with A Painting Fiesta) will have the opportunity to work with different mediums in addition to acrylic paint (pastels, pen, pencil, charcoal & more)! Through our step-by-step method, children enjoy art while having fun with age appropriate lessons that will be taken home when completed. At the end of the season, students will have gained a greater understanding and appreciation for art and a collection of works both your child and yourself can be proud of. No prior artistic experience necessary! All that’s required is an enthusiastic attitude and we take care of the rest! NOTE: PLEASE READ- A Painting Fiesta uses acrylic paint, which does not come out from clothes. Paints we use in our classes are non-toxic and are permanent on clothing, but not on hair or skin. We do provide smocks for the class to use to prevent some paint falling on your clothes, although we do recommend to wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty as accidents do happen.

Palavra Portuguese for Heritage Language Learners| Wednesday, Grades 2-5 This Portuguese program is dedicated to children that speak or, at least, already understand Portuguese. The program focuses on developing literacy skills and cultural competence. The classes are 100% in Portuguese and use authentic materials to design ageappropriate projects. The program’s exclusive and innovative curriculum approach creates opportunities for continuous development of Portuguese language acquisition in meaningful and interactive ways. For best practices, the program is limited to 10 students per class.

Robotics & Stop Animation | Friday, Grades SK-5 This club uses a hands-on, project-based learning approach to teach STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) concepts in a fun and engaging way. It helps prepare future generations of engineers and scientists, as well as lifelong learners. Students will build their own robot and program it to accomplish a predetermined mission through a computer. Each session has different missions, attachments, and games. Stop Animation will begin the second half of this club. With a partner, build your own guided mini-movie and create your own animated movie using thousands of different colorful bricks and pieces. We provide characters or bring something from home. With our Cam and software, you use a computer to make your animated movie using stop-motion and live video techniques. Once that process is completed, you will have the chance to edit, add exciting sound effects, music, narration, and titles to your movie. The finished product will be emailed to you. Running & Track Club | Wednesday, Grades 3-5 In this children’s running and track club, children will learn the mechanics of proper run form while having fun and getting exercise. The children will participate in running drills, relay races, and track workouts as they build endurance and learn how to race both track and road race events. Taught by the amazing Coach, Caryn Lubetsky.

Stitch ’n Sew | Wednesday, Grades SK-5 Oodles of fun stuff! We like to take into account the interests and experience of our students in each class. On our first day, we do a fun starter project. We then ask what they are interested in making over the course of our time together. After that, the sewing world is ours to play in, while fitting in as many fun sewing projects as we can! Some previous projects: • Pillows with secret pockets • Circle Skirts • Pajama Bottoms • Bow Ties and Ties • Infinity Scarves • Tote Bags • Holiday Gifts.

Soccer | Monday, Grades SK-2 | Tuesday, Grades 3-5 Our classes are designed to help children enjoy and love soccer. Fun is at the heart of all classes with each age-appropriate curriculum, which is based on what we know works best for most children at their particular level. We focus on building their skills and gaining confidence. Classes are taught by our experienced coaches, who know how to teach children skills in a fun and challenging way. Get ready for soccer with Coach Ruben and Fired-Up Youth Sports.

Soccer Jr. | Thursday, Grades PK3-JK4 This club is an introduction to soccer, and the focus will be on fun and developing confidence. Each session will include drills and a scrimmage. This club uses a variety of games to delight and engage kids in physical activity. The curriculum is designed to develop motor skills, promote physical fitness, and create self-confidence in young children. It stresses a non-competitive environment and promotes fun above all else. Get ready for soccer with Coach Ruben!

Tennis | Monday & Thursday, Grades SK-5 (Limited to 12 Students Only) Held at the Miami Shores Country Club, this club is customized for the recreational player, the beginning player interested in competitive play, and the advanced player with tournament aspirations. Each level emphasizes a well-rounded experience that includes personalized instruction, drills, and match play. Director of Tennis, Howie Orlin, has an outstanding tennis background as a player, coach, and teacher. He was also a nationally-ranked junior player and a collegiate All-American. The children will play on a variety of clay and Cushioned Hard Courts. Transportation by Americanus Bus Service to and from the Miami Shores Country Club courts. NOTE: Please make sure to fill out the Tennis waiver. This can be found on CampBrain when registering. Your child will not be able to attend without this form.

Top Flight Drone Club| Friday, Grades 3-5 Drones are the perfect way for children to develop a passion for science and gives them a new perspective of the world that they see every day. Top Flight Pilots will learn how to apply aerial planes, drones, and rockets in different fields. Price of drone is included in the fee and students will be able to keep their drone. What are you waiting for?!

Valente Brothers Jiu-Jitsu | Wednesday, Grades 2-5 The Valente Brothers youth self-defense program at Miami Country Day was carefully designed to instill unshakable courage, emotional balance and discipline in your children in a safe and uplifting environment. The self-confidence gained through these after school classes translate into more peaceful and calm attitudes that will help your kid overcome obstacles and achieve their goals at school and beyond. This course will be personally taught by world-renown Valente Brothers’ Head Professor, Pedro Valente. The Valente Brothers operate one of the premier self-defense training centers in the world. The brand new state-of-the-art Valente Brothers Headquarters building in North Miami Beach is attended by students from around the world including many Miami Country Day families. The brothers have over twenty years of teaching experience and currently also teach United States military special forces units and law enforcement SWAT teams.
