Lower School After School Club Program

Miami Country Day School is proud to invite your children to join in our After School Club Program. These clubs are specifically designed for our Lower School students and are a wonderful way for them to participate in an organized after school activity. The Fall 2016 Session is now open for registration for students in grades PK3-5th. This program alleviates the need to carpool to off-campus, after school activities. Each club is taught by a professional and is geared toward enhancing your child’s overall school experience. DISMISSAL INFORMATION Clubs take place Monday through Friday from 3:15 PM to 4:15 PM. At school dismissal time, all children are sent to the club sign-in room. When clubs are finished, dismissal is in the Lower School turnaround. Every student must be signed-out. They will be supervised until 4:30PM. Children not picked up by 4:30 PM will be taken to Extended Day. This is a separate program for which you will be billed accordingly. PARENTS: PLEASE KEEP A RECORD OF ALL DATES (BEGINNING AND END DATES AS WELL AS DAYS OFF) Please make sure you register on CampBrain. This will be the only way you will be able to register for After School Clubs. It is an online registration and payment portal. You can access the online registration portal by visiting miamicountryday.campbrainregistration.com. Once a club is filled, we can no longer accept participants due to club enrollment limits. We strive to make each club an enjoyable and a safe experience for all students. Therefore, there will be no exceptions to this policy. No refunds will be given after the first week. Important Registration Procedures At Miami Country Day School, your child’s experience in our After School Club Program is very important to us. We strive to make each experience enjoyable and safe. Any rules that we institute are to insure your child’s safety and enjoyment of the club program above all else. Please refer to the Lower School Handbook for specific behavior and expectation policies. Again, we must emphasize that these rules are put in place for your child’s safety. Complying with all rules and policies will make the After School Club experience more enjoyable for all. Please help us continue to make the club program one of the best! ENROLLMENT INFORMATION Clubs begin the week of August 29th. However, clubs do fill up quickly; therefore, once a club is filled, there will be no further enrollment. There will be no refunds after the first week. There are no exceptions to this policy. SIGNING OUT OF CLUBS At MCDS, our students’ security is of the utmost importance. Therefore, each club member must be signed out. If picking up early, you must notify the Director of After School Clubs, Betsy Kaplan by email or phone. CLUB MEMBERS ONLY Some students may plan to go home with friends after clubs, or have a friend with him/her who is not registered for our club program. These students are not permitted to join in a club, even for one day. Only registered club members may attend club sessions. LATE PICK-UP The pick-up time after clubs is by 4:30 PM. Any child that is not picked up by the scheduled time will be taken to the Extended Day Program and be charged the additional fee accordingly. Notification from a parent is required for the following: •

If your child is to be picked up by someone other than yourself

If your child is to go home with another child

If your child is not attending clubs on a particular day

If you would like to make a scheduling change concerning clubs

2. All clubs are on a first-come, first serve basis. There is limited space in many of the clubs, so please sign up early. No exceptions. 3. If a student does not wish to continue in a club after the first meeting, he or she is entitled to a refund. Immediately notify Betsy Kaplan, After School Clubs Director, if your child wishes to withdraw after the first meeting. 4. Students must be picked up promptly when clubs are finished or they will be taken to the Extended Day Program and charged an additional fee. Thank you for your cooperation!

After School Club Descriptions Fall Session 2016 Acting and Comedy 101 | Tuesday, Grades SK-2 | Thursday, Grades 3-5 Kids will laugh their way through this class designed to introduce children to the basics of acting, performing and improvisational theater. From the art of crafting a joke, to working on monologues and scenes, children will learn how to own the stage! This creativity-building class will help student gain confidence, find and develop their unique voice, all while practicing the skill of interact with an audience and building self-esteem. New York City’s Award-Winning Improvisation and Acting School for kids, Red Carpet Improv, is now being offered at Miami Country Day School! Voted Best of NY Magazine and Timeout Kids. Athletics’ Combo | Wednesday, Grades SK-5 Coach Ruben brings his education of sports to our students through science and expertise. Every three weeks Coach Ruben will choose a sport and educate our students with drills and games so each child will learn how to play individually as well as with a team, how to play each sport, and the rules of the game. Spots go fast for this class, so sign up before it’s too late! Broadcasting-Spartan TV | Tuesday, Grades 4-5 (LIMITED TO 10 STUDENTS) Broadcasting Club is an exciting way to have loads of fun while learning important skills such as public speaking, interviewing, and teamwork. Fourth and fifth grade participants will enjoy alternating jobs of news reporting, sound operations, camera operations, script writing, and editing. If you see yourself as a ham in front of the camera or a super techie operating sophisticated news equipment, then this is the club for you! Clay World | Monday, Grades SK-5 | Tuesday, Grades PK3-JK4 This program explores the art of clay modeling and character design by using your hands as sculpting tools and polymer clay as the medium. This course will improve the students’ fine motor skills and artistic capabilities. Different techniques will be taught, such as pointillism, spreads, textured clay, among others. Three different course levels will be given: basic, medium, and advanced. All supplies included. Cooking Club | Wednesday, Grades PK3-JK4 | Thursday, Grades SK-5 “We don’t change the dish; we change the ingredients”. Students will create dishes based on these topics; what are ingredients, a good understanding of what ingredients actually are will be the central message. Children will learn an understanding of processed foods vs. real foods, artificial flavors vs. artificial colors, sugar and why it is so additive, farm-to-table concept, grass fed animals vs. caged feed animals, plant base foods diets and its benefits and most importantly; Family bonding and the table. Cooking with Kids Miami was voted one of the best cooking schools in Miami by Miami New Times! Crazy about Animals | Thursday, Grades SK-5 (10-week program) | Friday, Grades PK3-JK4 (10-week program) Discover the world of insects, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals. Pet a scorpion. Hold a salamander or a snake. Play with a lemur, an anteater, or a kinkajou. You can even hug an alligator! Farm Animals will also be added this session – ducks, piglets, and goats just to name just a few. Join us for an unforgettable time full of lots of learning and animal interaction in every class! Clay Words Masks & Gadgets | Thursday, Grades SK-5 Clay is an amazing material that lets you create anything that comes to mind. Clay World has developed a program where children have the opportunity to build useful gadgets as well as amazing custom made masks and jewelry. Clay World gives them the tools to let their creativity soar.


Cheerleading | Tuesday, Grades SK-5 Tumble, Dance, Cheer, and Perform! Looking for a fun team sport this session? Don’t miss out on the chance to be a part of the Fired Up Cheerleading Team! We will be working on cheers, routines, exercise, conditioning, tumbling, and stunting. Cheerleading not only trains you physically, cheerleaders will learn the ins and outs of teamwork, accountability, and even build self-esteem. Sign up now to reserve your spot. Creative Movement, Dance, Tai-Chi, & Yoga (NIA CERTIFIED) |Thursday, Grades SK-5 (LIMITED TO 12 STUDENTS) A place where you can open up physically, emotionally, and spiritually, this interactive class’ primary goal is to introduce students to the basic practices essential in the Performing Arts. Students will be engaged in dance, music, and yoga. They will be challenged to set their own goals to strengthen their abilities in each of these areas. Adriana Sandoval is a teaching artist. She believes that this is integral part of this process by: guiding and facilitating student growth on an individual basis in performing, listening, ensemble work, and other social skills. By exposing elementary students to these principles, we will open up an opportunity to discover their talents. Please bring you yoga mat and comfy shoes. EBCoders: Early Bird Computer Club| Wednesdays 7:40 AM – 8:40 AM, Grades 2-5 (LIMITED TO 8 STUDENTS) Go from just playing games and to creating your own games! We’ll start off building projects using Scratch, a block programming language that gets kids up and running with programming very quickly. Next we will explore HTML/CSS to gain an understanding of the code behind the websites we use and even create our own web pages. Finally we’ll work with Python, an object-oriented language. Students need not have any experience programming. We will adjust each person’s projects to his or her interests and level of understanding. Flag Football | Tuesday, Grades SK-2| Friday, Grades 3-5 Our motto is “education through recreation!” We encourage all participants to be the best person and athlete they can be. Your child will develop basic Flag Football fundamentals, as well as gaining the knowledge and skills to take them to the next level. Golf | Tuesday & Friday, Grades SK-5 (LIMITED TO 12 STUDENTS ONLY) The after school golf club has been designed to introduce children in SK through 5th grade to the great game of golf. Each lesson will focus on a specific aspect of the game. The children will learn the proper fundamentals in order to develop the skills necessary to play the game. It is not necessary for the children to have their own clubs, but it is strongly recommended. A putter, driving club, and 7-iron are sufficient. Children learn through the stroke of the day, short game, and putting instruction. They are drilled on basic strokes, iron and wood instruction, footwork, and the rules of golf and scoring. Competitive drills and games and supervised course play are bonus features. Instruction is led by either Pro Ricardo Rondero or Head Pro Trace Allison from the Miami Shores Country Club. Transportation provided by Americanus Bus Service to the Miami Shores Golf Course and back to MCDS is included. NOTE: Please make sure to fill out the Golf waiver. This can be found on CampBrain when registering. Your child will not be able to attend without this form. Hip Hop Kidz | Wednesday, Grades SK-5 Hip Hop Kidz is one of the most popular children’s dance programs in South Florida. Hip Hop Kidz dancers have made appearance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, at the Miami Heat and Dolphins Games, and in numerous music videos and TV shows. Now, Hip Hop Kidz is available to you through the After School Club Program. In this popular class, kids feel as if they are dancing in their own music video. Boys and girls learn the coolest dance choreography to the hottest hip-hop beats. Movements are broken down in a fun, easy-to-follow method. Your child will have an amazing experience learning fresh new moves and how to work with different musical beats, all the while getting in great shape! This club is taught by professional dance instructor Ali Dunbar. Junior I Know Science | Monday, Grades PK3-JK4 If your child loves to do experiments, then this is the perfect opportunity for him/her to join us as we explore all areas in science. Kids explore, investigate, get messy, learn, but most of all have fun along with our excellent instructors! Our after school club provides the right opportunities for the littlest future scientists to further their understanding of science concepts through engaging, exciting, and hands-on experiments. Sparking up interest and a life-long love for science while gaining a competitive


advantage as our program breaks down complex science concepts and applies scientific terminology in fun games kids love. I KNOW SCIENCE was voted “Favorite Enrichment Program� by Broward Family Life Magazine! Mind Lab | Monday, Grades SK-5 Mind Lab is an innovative and research based program that helps K-5th grade students enhance their cognitive, social and emotional skills using internationally acclaimed strategy games. Mind Lab has developed a unique approach that fills the gap between school education and real life challenges by teaching students how to think rather than what to think. During the course the concepts are applied to real life situation allowing children to make transference from game scenarios to real life experiences and scholastic achievement. Extensive research conducted by Yale University endorses that the Mind Lab Method significantly improves math and verbal scores as well as other important thinking and life skills. Painting Fiesta | Wednesday, Grades SK-5 A Painting Fiesta is a local art studio serving the South Florida area for several years. Your child will discover his or her inner artist with our step-by-step method. Our young artists learn to paint on canvas with acrylic paint, and we never repeat a lesson. Bring the gift of art into your home with a beautiful masterpiece created by your child. NOTE: Be sure to provide an additional old shirt we can get a little paint on. We do provide smocks; however, kids may get a little extra excited and paint may fall on their clothing (Paint is permanent on clothing.) Robotics & Stop Animation | Friday, Grades SK-5 This club uses a hands-on, project-based learning approach to teach STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) concepts in a fun and engaging way. It helps prepare future generations of engineers and scientists, as well as lifelong learners. Students will build their own robot and program it to accomplish a predetermined mission through a computer. Each session has different missions, attachments, and games. Stop Animation will begin the second half of this club. With a partner, build your own guided mini-movie and create your own animated movie using thousands of different colorful bricks and pieces. We provide characters or bring something from home. With our Cam and software, you use a computer to make your animated movie using stop-motion and live video techniques. Once that process is completed, you will have the chance to edit, add exciting sound effects, music, narration, and titles to your movie. The finished product will be emailed to you. Sign up now, space is limited. Sew Couture | Wednesday, Grades SK-5 This boutique-style club is an excellent way to empower your child with a useful skill, confidence, and positive self-esteem. At Sew Couture, students learn basic design and sewing skills, all while making Sew Couture projects. All projects are fun and styli Students design their own custom fabric using tie-dye techniques, create fashionable Couture purses from old jeans, make matching halters and headbands for their American Girl Dolls, and so much more! Video Game Design | Thursday, Grades 2-5 Learn to use innovate Video Game software and apply math and computer skills to learn 3D modeling. Create your own complete interactive video game with characters, settings, music, art, obstacles, and controls. Learn about Design Process, which combines many of 21st Century Learning Skills: Thinking Creatively, Communicating Clearly, Analyzing Systematically, Collaborating Effectively, Designing Iteratively, and Learning Continuously. Sign up now!!! Soccer | Monday, Grades SK-2 | Tuesday, Grades 3-5 Our classes are designed to help children enjoy and love soccer. Fun is at the heart of all classes with each age-appropriate curriculum, which is based on what we know works best for most children at their particular level. We focus on building their skills and gaining confidence. Classes are taught by our experienced coaches, who know how to teach children skills in a fun and challenging way. Get ready for soccer with Coach Ruben!! Soccer Jr. | Thursday, Grades PK3-JK4 This club is an introduction to soccer, and the focus will be on fun and developing confidence. Each session will include drills and a scrimmage. This club uses a variety of games to delight and engage kids in physical activity. The curriculum is designed to develop motor skills, promote physical fitness, and create self-confidence in young children. It stresses a non- competitive environment and promotes fun above all else. Get ready for soccer with Coach Ruben!


Tennis | Monday & Thursday, Grades SK-5 (LIMITED TO 12 STUDENTS ONLY) Held at the Miami Shores Country Club, this club is customized for the recreational player, the beginning player interested in competitive play, and the advanced player with tournament aspirations. Each level emphasizes a well-rounded experience that includes personalized instruction, drills, and match play. Director of Tennis Howie Orlin, has an outstanding tennis background as a player, coach, and teacher. He was also a nationally-ranked junior player and a collegiate All-American. The children will play on a variety of clay and Cushioned Hard Courts. Transportation, provided by Americanus Bus Service, to the Miami Shores Country Club Tennis Courts and back to MCDS included. NOTE: Please make sure to fill out the Tennis waiver. Your child will not be able to attend without this form. Valente Brothers Jiu-Jitsu| Wednesday, Grades 2-5 The Valente Brothers Program focuses on the physical, emotional and mental well-being, as well the education of our children. It is “Education for Life”. They assist students with the development of characteristic and skills they will need in order to live a happy and balanced life. Pupils develop confidence, discipline, courage, responsibility, and leadership among other important values. The Valente Brothers Program focuses a great deal of attention to the development of selfesteem. A good self-image is the basis of a well-functioning, happy and successful child. Classes will focus primarily on building the winning attributes needed for learning and productive living such as discipline, courtesy, confidence, character focus, concentration, and teamwork. In addition, they will focus on building basic athletic skills like strength, flexibility, and coordination. The instructors at Valente Brothers serve as powerful role models of positive and healthy behavior to all. Zumba| Friday, Grades SK-5 Zumba Kids® Program is a fun, high-energy fitness-class packed with specially choreographed routines and games for children and teens. We introduce the latest music and rhythms like hip-hop, reggaeton, cumbia and salsa. Zumba Kids®. The music and choreography is children friendly and educational. Educators love Zumba Kids® because of the effects it has on children; increasing their focus and self-esteem, enhancing creativity and coordination, boosting metabolism and implementing teamwork skills. Each class is headed by a trained and licensed Zumba Kids® fitness instructor and includes not only music and dance but arts and crafts and cultural education as well. It is a fun way for your kids to keep healthy and motivated.
