After School Clubs Spring Session 2020
Lower School After School Club Program
Miami Country Day School is proud to invite your children to join in our After School Club Program. These clubs are specifically designed for our Lower School students and are a wonderful way for them to participate in an organized after school activity. The Spring 2020 Session is now open for registration for students in grades PK3-5th. This program alleviates the need to carpool to off-campus after school activities. Each club is taught by a professional and is geared toward enhancing your child’s overall school experience. DISMISSAL INFORMATION Clubs take place Monday through Friday from 3:15 PM to 4:15 PM. At school dismissal time, all children are sent to the club sign-in room. When clubs are finished, pick up is at the Lower School turnaround. Every student must be signed-out. They will be supervised until 4:30 PM. Children not picked up by 4:30 PM will be taken to Extended Day. This is a separate program for which you will be billed accordingly. PARENTS: PLEASE READ ALL THE INFORMATION IN THIS BROCHURE. IT WILL ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS THAT YOU MAY HAVE INCLUDING DATES AND TIMES (BEGINNING AND END DATES AS WELL AS DAYS OFF) Please make sure you register on CampBrain. Important Registration Procedures At Miami Country Day School, your child’s experience in our After School Club Program is very important to us. We strive to make each experience enjoyable and safe. Any rules that we institute are to ensure your child’s safety and enjoyment of the club program above all else. Please refer to the Lower School Handbook for specific behavior and expectation policies. Again, we must emphasize that these rules are put in place for your child’s safety. Complying with all rules and policies will make the After School Club experience more enjoyable for all. Please help us continue to make the club program one of the best! ENROLLMENT INFORMATION Clubs begin the week of March 30, 2020. Clubs do fill up quickly; therefore, once a club is filled, there will be no further enrollment. There will be no refunds after the first week (you will be charged for the first week that your child attended). There are no exceptions to this policy. SIGNING OUT OF CLUBS At MCDS, our students’ security is of the utmost importance. If picking up early, you must notify the Director of After School Clubs, Betsy Kaplan, by email or phone. CLUB MEMBERS ONLY Some students may plan to go home with friends after clubs or have a friend with him/her who is not registered for our club program. These students are not permitted to join in a club, even for one day. Only registered club members may attend club sessions. LATE PICK-UP The pick-up time after clubs is by 4:30 PM. Any child who is not picked up by the scheduled time will be taken to the Extended Day Program and be charged the additional fee accordingly. PAYMENT PROCEDURE Please make sure you register on CampBrain. This will be the only way you will be able to register for After School Clubs. It is an online registration and payment portal. Notification from a parent is required for the following: • If your child is to be picked up by someone other than yourself • If your child is to go home with another child • If your child is not attending clubs on a particular day, please make changes in Schoolpass • If you would like to make a scheduling change concerning clubs 2. All clubs are on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is limited space in many of the clubs, so please sign up early. No exceptions. 3. If your student does not wish to continue in a club after the first meeting, you are entitled to a refund for the remaining weeks. Immediately notify Betsy Kaplan, After School Clubs Director, if your child wishes to withdraw after the first meeting. 4. Students must be picked up promptly when clubs are finished or they will be taken to the Extended Day Program and charged an additional fee. 5. Our school policy does not allow for the use of cell phones in Lower School; this is being extended to After School Clubs. After School Clubs reserves the right to confiscate phones and hand them back at club dismissal. Thank you for your cooperation!

After School Club Descriptions Spring Session 2020 3-D Art | Monday, Grades PK3-1
In our Art Rods Program, students will learn the basics of 3D design, sculpting and modeling, which will release their creativity, and let their imagination go in this fun and engaging art program. We use an inventive and fun material called Art Rods which is a brand new modeling material, a foam rod with wire core, which is perfect for prototyping inventions, creating art, teaching children alphabet letters, or assisting STEAM kids. It is fun, colorful, squishy, and an extreme creativity tool. Your students can make dozens of objects like animals, airplanes, pencil holders, flowers and more. They will take home their creations to share with their family and friends.
Acting and Comedy 101 | Tuesday, Grades SK-2
Kids will laugh their way through this class designed to introduce children to the basics of acting, performing and improvisational theatre with an audience, while building self-esteem. New York City’s award-winning improvisation and acting school for kids, Red Carpet Improv, is now being offered at Miami Country Day School! Voted Best of by NY Magazine and Timeout Kids.
Airplane Captains | Thursday, Grades SK-5
Roger that, Captain, you’re in charge! As a commander in this exclusive flying club, you’ll learn important STEM concepts in order to build your own aircraft. Then you’ll take them for a spin and watch them soar through the clouds. This class is the perfect combination of science and fun! It’s all up to you, so buckle up and take the controls in this fantastic flying program. It’s Physics! Build it! Fly it! Keep it!
Arduino Robots | Thursday, Grades 1-5
Arduino Robots is a hands-on program that uses Arduino Kits Robots for children to learn programming, electronics and more. Students will build different types of robots with similar Arduino boards that allow them to learn about sensors, motors, and connections. These Arduino kits are actual programmable robots for children. When we say real programmable, we mean it!!! Students can program using a compatible Scratch 2-based software (Precoding).
Athletics Combo | Wednesday, Grades SK-5
Fired Up Athletic Force brings their education of sports to our students through science and expertise. Every three weeks they will choose a sport and educate our students with drills and games so each child will learn how to play individually as well as with a team, how to play each sport, and the rules of the game. Spots go fast for this class, so sign up before it’s too late!
Ballet | Monday, Grades SK-5
Nexplore’s Ballet program is designed to help dancers create a strong foundation through repetitive movement, ballet vocabulary, discussion and exploration. Dancers will learn all about music, movement, coordination, spatial relations, and the basics of ballet that will hopefully lead to many fun-filled years of dancing and self-expression. Classroom focus will be on appropriate etiquette, respect for others and self-confidence.

Beginning French | Tuesday, Grades SK-5
The after school French course will introduce students to the study of a beautiful and elegant language. French is the international language of cooking, fashion, theatre, the visual arts, dance and architecture. It is a language for travel, and a language for the international job market. The course will focus on communicating in French and on developing the important skills of listening and speaking. Students will be introduced to everyday vocabulary and expressions in the context of francophone cultures. Students will learn through songs, poems, and games in a dynamic and supportive environment. Vive le français!
Beginning Mandarin | Monday, Grades SK-5
The after school Mandarin course is designed for students (ages 5-10 years) who are interested in learning Mandarin Chinese. Students will learn the basic structures of the Mandarin Chinese language with emphasis on developing fundamental skills (listening and speaking) of spoken Mandarin Chinese with application to a number of familiar everyday topics. Students will learn to understand and to use basic sentence patterns and vocabulary using pinyin (spelling words in Mandarin using the western alphabet). Students will also write using modern Chinese characters.
Cheerleading | Monday, Grades SK-5
Fired Up Athletic Force brings its expertise in cheerleading to MCDS. Tumble, dance, cheer, and perform! Looking for a fun team sport this session? Chess Club | Monday, Thursday, and Friday |Grades SK-5
The Spartan After School Spartan Chess Club gives Lower School students an opportunity to learn about chess in a fun, social but educational and competitive environment. The interaction with other students is a key component in sparking student’s interest in chess, which in turn, can lead to academic excellence and improved self-esteem. In addition to basic tactics, opening strategy and endgames, players learn where to play and train for chess online. Attendees are also introduced to the cultural aspects of chess in the media, such as chess-themed movies and music videos. All levels of players attend from absolute beginners to scholastic champions. The club is conducted by MCDS Chess Program Director – FIDE International Grandmaster, Ron W Henley. Ron was a childhood sponsor of 11 time US Women’s Champion Irina Krush and Chief Second and Trainer for nine matches for Twelfth World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov. Ron is a noted chess author and instructional video producer for (ICC) Internet Chess Club and IChess.net.
Clay World | Monday, Grades SK-5 | Tuesday, Grades PK3-JK4
This program explores the art of clay modeling and character design by using your hands as sculpting tools and polymer clay as the medium. This course will improve the students’ fine motor skills and artistic capabilities. Different techniques will be taught, such as pointillism, spreads and textured clay, among others. Three different course levels will be given: basic, medium, and advanced. All supplies included.
Cooking Club | Wednesday, Grades PK3-JK 4 | Thursday, Grades SK-5
“We don’t change the dish; we change the ingredients.” Students will create dishes focusing on ingredients. Having a good understanding of what ingredients actually are will be the central message. Children will learn an understanding of processed foods vs. real foods, artificial flavors, artificial colors, sugar and why it is so addictive, farm-to-table concept, grass fed animals vs. caged fed animals, plant based food diets and its benefits, and most importantly, family bonding at the table. Cooking with Kids Miami was voted one of the best cooking schools in Miami by Miami New Times!
Girls Soccer | Tuesday, Grades SK-5 (Begins April 7)
The purpose of this club is to provide a fun and active program through an organized soccer program that will provide instruction, development and training. Participants new to the sport will learn the fundamentals of soccer, team building and fitness. Participants with experience will develop tools necessary to reach their personal potential in the sport of soccer. Focus on individual skills mastery and tactical development will include. In addition, participants will strengthen some of their life skills such as self confidence, teamwork, social skills and communication. The goal of this club is to develop, identify and prepare the players for a future at the upper school soccer programs with the Middle School and Varsity Girls soccer.
Golf | Tuesday & Friday, Grades SK-5 (LIMITED TO 12 STUDENTS)
The after school golf club has been designed to introduce children SK-5 to the great game of golf. Each lesson will focus on a specific aspect of the game. The children will learn the proper fundamentals in order to develop the skills necessary to play the game. It is not necessary for the children to have their own clubs, but it is strongly recommended. A putter, driving club, and 7-iron are sufficient. Children learn through the stroke of the day, short game, and putting instruction. They are drilled on basic strokes, iron and wood instruction, footwork, and the rules of golf and scoring. Competitive drills and games and supervised course play are bonus features. Instruction is led by Pro Ricardo Rondero from the Miami Shores Country Club. Transportation provided to and from the Miami Shores Golf Course. NOTE: PLEASE MAKE SURE TO FILL OUT THE GOLF WAIVER. THIS CAN BE FOUND ON CAMPBRAIN WHEN REGISTERING. This is an exciting and innovative youth program. Through hands-on activities and games, students learn the Hebrew language and culture that surrounds it. The club is an invigorating environment where children enjoy the educational journey and the cultural experience.
I Know Science: The Lab | Tuesday, Grades SK-5
Where today’s play becomes tomorrow’s passion! If your child loves to do experiments, then this is the perfect opportunity for them to join us as we explore all areas in science. Join us once a week as we explore the wonders and beauty of science. Kids investigate, get messy, learn, but most of all have fun in areas such as physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, and countless others. Sign-up and let the exploration begin!
Intro to Acting on Film | Thursday, Grades 3-5
This class will explore the fun and exciting world of acting and performing on-camera. It will give kids a real world understanding of what it’s like to work with material from actual commercials, television shows, and movies. Kids will hone the art of acting and performing on-camera and learn an array of industry audition skills. Children will spend the semester learning about professional performance skills, while they build confidence and self-esteem, working with dramatic and comedic scripts.

So you want to be the boss? How cool would it be for you to be the CEO of Apple, Under Armour or Amazon for a day? In this advanced leadership camp, you can do just that! You will learn what it takes to revitalize and revamp top performing companies like Apple, Coke, and Under Armour. Additionally, campers learn leadership philosophies, develop mission statements for their own business endeavors, and pitch presentations Shark Tank style.
Junior I Know Science | Monday, Grades PK3-JK4
If your little scientist loves to do experiments, then this is the perfect opportunity to explore, hands-on, the beautiful world of science. Along with our fabulous instructors, kids explore using the scientific method. Yes, even at this young age. They’ll explore, investigate, get messy, learn, but most of all have fun! Junior T-Ball | Wednesday, Grades PK3-JK4
Time to go to home plate! “Fired-up” T-Ball is coming and you don’t want to miss out on this fun sport. We teach throwing and catching a ball as well as hitting from the tee. This develops motor skills and hand-eye coordination while exercising after school. Space is limited so don’t wait to join.
Mad Dance: Hip Hop | Wednesday, Grades SK-5
For kids who just love to move and groove, this class combines Jazz and Hip Hop in a fun and age appropriate way! Learn the basic techniques of both genres and create exciting and energetic dances. Our classes fill dancers with energy and excitement while focusing on Jazz and Hip Hop technique from classic styles to new modern aspects. This MAD class combines modern dance, Hip Hop skills and acrobatics in a way that fuses all styles together for a fun and educational hour, one that dancers will love to attend each week.
Music with Boom Whackers | Thursday, Grades PK3-JK4
In our music course, your students will combine the joy of making music with fun activities and games using these colorful tubes called Boomwackers®. What is a boom whacker? Well, it’s a stick which, when whacked, plays a musical note. It’s as simple as that. Boom whackers enhance learning by integrating music and movement. Boom whackers are lightweight, hollow, color-coded, plastic tubes, tuned to a musical pitch by their length; when you whack them, they create a unique sound.
Painting and Mixed Media by Clay World | Friday, Grades SK-5
Clay World takes over the world of painting with a whimsical look, exploring different techniques and ways to work on a canvas. This artistic class helps students improve their creativity and confidence while painting with a brush or spatula. Monsters, fairies, animals and beautiful views will be rendered during this class. Students will bring all their paintings home by the end of this class.
Painting Fiesta | Wednesday, Grades SK-5
This season, students enrolled in Painting Fiesta will have the opportunity to learn basic drawing and painting fundamentals. Our experienced instructors work with different mediums such as acrylic paint, oil pastels and watercolor paints! Through our step-by-step method, children enjoy art, being creative, improving fine motor skills and getting satisfaction out of creating their own artwork, all while having tons of fun! At the end of the season, students will have gained a greater understanding and appreciation for art. No prior artistic experience necessary! NOTE: PLEASE READ- A PAINTING FIESTA USES ACRYLIC PAINT, WHICH DOES NOT COME OUT OF CLOTHING. WHILE WE DO PROVIDE APRONS TO WEAR, ACCIDENTS DO HAPPEN. Photography with Art Cortex | Monday, Grades SK-5
In this day and age photography is everywhere, with many platforms to share our day to day lives and adventures with friends and family. In this class, we offer your young creatives a chance to explore their creative side with top-line digital cameras and DSLRs. Knowing how to use your camera is very important as there are many functions to make your images stronger. We will explore different types of photography and experiment with fun exciting projects. By the end of this class, your young ones will have a full understanding of cameras, photography and develop a keen eye for creating beautiful images along with a portfolio.
Robotics & Stop Animation | Friday, Grades SK-5
This club uses a hands-on, project-based learning approach to teach STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) concepts in a fun and engaging way. It helps prepare future generations of engineers and scientists, as well as lifelong learners. Students will build their own robot and program it to accomplish a predetermined mission through a computer. Each session has different missions, attachments, and games. Stop Animation will begin the second half of this club. With a partner, build your own guided mini-movie and create your own animated movie using thousands of different colorful bricks and pieces. We provide characters or bring something from home. With our Cam and software, you use a computer to make your animated movie using stop-motion and live video techniques. Once that process is completed, you will have the chance to edit, add exciting sound effects, music, narration, and titles to your movie. The finished product will be emailed to you. Running Club with Ms. Lubetsky | Thursday, Grades 3-5
In this club, students will learn the mechanics of proper run form while having fun and getting exercise. The students will participate in running drills, relay races, and track workouts as they build endurance and learn how to race both track and road race events. On your mark, get set, go!
Soccer | Monday, Grades SK-2 | Tuesday, Grades 3-5
Our classes are designed to help children enjoy and love soccer. Fun is at the heart of all classes with each age-appropriate curriculum, which is based on what we know works best for most children at their particular level. We focus on building their skills and gaining confidence. Classes are taught by our experienced coaches who know how to teach children skills in a fun and challenging way, get ready for soccer with coach Ruben and Fired-Up Youth Sports.
Soccer Jr. | Thursday, Grades PK-JK
This club is an introduction to soccer, and the focus will be on fun and developing confidence. Each session will include drills and a scrimmage. This club uses a variety of games to delight and engage kids in physical activity. The curriculum is designed to develop motor skills, promote physical fitness, and create self-confidence in young children. It stresses a non-competitive environment and promotes fun above all else. Get ready for soccer with Coach Ruben!
Survival Science | Wednesday, Grades 1-5
Emergencies can happen at any time! While the odds of being lost or stranded outdoors are low, knowing what to do in an emergency is important. As survivalists, students learn exactly what to do in an emergency through the team-based study of real-world survival skills. From investigating the utility of tools to working through challenging situations, over this course, learners use ingenuity to gain crucial skills such as knot tying, water purification and compass navigation. Bringing STEM to the great outdoors, instructors and students love the hands-on, interactive and collaborative curriculum. With each thrilling activity, students gather their senses, put their new skills to the test and conquer every challenge Mother Nature throws their way!
Tennis | Monday & Thursday, Grades SK-5 (Limited to 12 Students)
Held at the Miami Shores Country Club, this club is customized for the recreational or beginning player interested in competitive play, and the advanced player with tournament aspirations. Each level emphasizes a well-rounded experience that includes personalized instruction, drills, and match play. Director of Tennis, Howie Orlin, has an outstanding tennis background as a player, coach, and teacher. He was also a nationally-ranked junior player and a collegiate All-American. The children will play on clay, cushioned and hard courts. Transportation provided to/from the Miami Shores Country Club courts. NOTE: PLEASE MAKE SURE TO FILL OUT THE TENNIS WAIVER. The Makers Club | Tuesday, Grades SK-5
The Makers Club is STEAM program designed to inspire kids to pursue futures in Science & Technology with our fun Maker Kits, which enhance mechanic, art and engineering skills. Students interact with Maker Kits as creators in their own right and learn how to use tools and invent useful machines. Students design their own remote-controlled hydraulic arms, learn to harness the power of pressurized carbon dioxide with Yeast Mobiles, build electric & solar powered race cars, and experiment with gears & pulleys in our Tinker Sets. Students keep their inventions and proudly share their projects with family and friends. The Makers Club is fully aligned with Next Generation Science Standards and STEAM, and is designed to remind students to always stay creative.
Valente Brothers Jiu-Jitsu | Wednesday, Grades 2-5
The Valente Brothers youth self-defense program at MCDS was carefully designed to instill unshakable courage, emotional balance and discipline in your children in a safe and uplifting environment. The self-confidence gained through these after school classes translate into more peaceful and calm attitudes that will help your child overcome obstacles and achieve their goals at school and beyond. This course will be personally taught by world-renowned Valente Brothers’ Head Professor, Pedro Valente. The Valente Brothers operate one of the premier self-defense training centers in the world. The brand new state-of-the-art Valente Brothers Headquarters building in North Miami Beach is attended by students from around the world including many Miami Country Day families. The brothers have over twenty years of teaching experience and currently also teach United States military special forces units and law enforcement SWAT teams.
World of Magic | Friday, Grades SK-5
Welcome to the World of Magic where every child is a star! In this unique course, students will receive their very own magic kit that includes a magician’s wand and 26 props that can be used in more than a hundred astonishing tricks! Students not only learn magical techniques, but also build self-confidence, performance skills, and theatrical charm to wow their audience! New to the world of magic? This is the perfect place to start! This course provides an experienced instructor, a step-by-step guidebook, and a tutorial DVD so children can continue their practice at home. Plus, at the end of each course, students will have a chance to perform their new skills for family and friends in an end-of-session magic show, so every star can experience the chance to shine!
Young World Leaders | Tuesday, Grades 1-2
This fun program helps students develop a global mindset and build international awareness early in life, an important skill in today’s increasingly interconnected world. Students explore cultural differences across countries including tasty food, colorful clothes, striking traditions and rich languages. Activities include coloring and matching world currencies, building famous landmark replicas, creating your own country flag, and designing your own kid leadership platform.
