THE CAMPUS

C LASSROOM MIAMI COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL

Spartan Bowl 2013 Where were over 280 of our parents and alumni on Saturday, February 9? The MCDS Spartan Bowl at Miami Shores Country Club of course! Spartan Bowl 2013 included daytime tournaments for golfers and tennis players, Kids' Fun Day for students, and an evening of celebration at the Dinner & Auction "Tailgate Party." With your incredible support, we raised over $76,000 for Faculty Endowment, which ensures that our exceptional teaching faculty is maintained. Our teachers strive every day to inspire our students to seek the best in themselves and others. Our teachers are the true heart of our community. Thank you to all of our parents, alumni, faculty and friends who participated in Spartan Bowl 2013. Your support and participation made it a success! Thank you to our VIP Sponsors: Title Sponsor - Bal Harbour Shops; Red Spartan Sponsors - The Bakker Family, Moores; Navy Spartan Sponsors - Desso Sports Systems by 1st Turf, PunchMe and The Goldberg & Kremer Families, Kevin J. King '95, The Malamed Family & Ladenburg Thalmann, and Tanenbaum Harber of Florida & The Jove Family. A special thank you to our committee of parent, alumni and faculty volunteers who made it a day to remember. Thank you for making a difference for our school – our students – our teachers! Check out the wonderful photos from the day and night – http://mcds.se-imaging.com/ spartanbenefit.

Spartans Go To States

Congratulations to the Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team on their best season in the team’s 24 year history! In mid-February, the team traveled to Lakeland for the Final Four where they beat Seffner in the State Semifinals 60-51. With this win, the team advanced to the state finals for the first time – in any sport - in the school’s history! They played Daytona Father Lopez in the State Final on February 21 and lost the hard fought championship game 44-40. Newcomer, Danielle Minott and Channise Lewis, along with veterans, Onika Swaby, Breanna Blot, and Stephanie Mackenzie, formed a strong core in which the team thrived all season. Kayla Kotalik provided a spark when called upon and Lenee Blot contributed solid rebounding and assists. Sydney Jones, Jodi Banson and Lydie Alvarez, freshman Marsha Edwards and Jade Iadarola gave the team depth in their run to States. Congratulations to Coach O and the team on a wonderful season! On February 28, our Upper School Orchestra competed in the Florida Orchestra Association (FOA) Districts and received a rating of SUPERIOR. They qualified for the State competition April 22-24. This Upper School Orchestra is comprised of accomplished musicians from grades 6-12 who arrive at school every day for a 7:30 am orchestra class. Congratulations to Shaddi Tabarra, Marina Tabbara, Gina Macropulos, Kiana Matisonn, Madisyn Jones, Maddie Hertz, Melissa Benedek, Jonathan Abramowitz, Taegan Charles, Giulia Bronzi, Olivia Bronzi, Anna Cowett, Natalia de la Guardia, Violeta de la Guardia, Rebecca Fulford, Amelia Gregorio, Breno Medina, Alexander Slezynger and Ashley Fitelson. The MCDS community is very proud of our Spartans!

Summer at MCDS Summer is just around the corner, and that means one thing – it’s time for some FUN! This summer, you can choose from over 15 different camps and specialized programs. Each full day program includes a nutritious lunch and snacks throughout the day. Summer at MCDS rocks! Day Camp is our longest-running and most popular program. This year it is getting revamped by new Camp Director, the famous Mrs. Carroll Kelly. Some additions include golf lessons with Barry University Head Coach Jimmy Stobs, fitness classes with former Miami Dolphins player Sean Hill, dance classes by Hip Hop Kidz, a unique Morning Blast-Off Show, a distinct Counselor-in-Training program, and even more activities! Not to mention, all the favorites will be back in style – pony rides, field trips, water slides, and the list goes on. Our comprehensive day camp is for children ages 4-11 and runs 8 weeks from June 10-August 2. Sports Camps will include Coach O’s Basketball Camp, Coach Watson’s Simple Soccer Camp, Coach Penengo’s Solstice Lacrosse Camp, and Coach Jojo’s Power & Fitness Camp. New this year will be four distinct aquatics camps brought to you by Head Swim Coach Megan Pittman: Peak Performance Camp, FUNdamental Swim Camp, Summer Swim Team, and Lifeguard Camp. Specialty Program offerings include our wide range of course offerings through the Summer Studies Program, a broadcasting camp by Young Broadcasters of America called SpartanTV Camp, five Summer Mini Clubs for Lower School students, and a new Marine Eco Adventure Camp that will have you swimming in the keys and dissecting a shark! For more information or to register visit www.miamicountryday.org/summer. You can also call the Summer Camp Office at 305.779.7350 or email summercamp@miamicountryday.org.

Music Ensemble to Hit the Big Stage (Again) It has been another busy year for the MCDS Contemporary Music Ensemble. For the second year in a row, the group was invited to perform at the Florida Music Educators Association’s annual conference in Tampa in January. They hit the stage again later that month at the Dan Marino Foundation Walk About for Autism at SunLife Stadium in front of 15,000 people! Don’t think it ends there! They performed “The Circle” Music Extravaganza on Feb. 28 -March 2 at the MCDS Nathan Hurst ’89 Amphitheater. They will once again be playing on the Mainstage at the Vero Beach Hibiscus Festival on Saturday, April 13! Congratulations to John Wicker and the entire Contemporary Music Ensemble for these extraordinary accomplishments!
