Head of School Welcome Welcome Spartan Fans: I hope you enjoy this issue of the Fall Athletic Sports Program. The school year is off to a great start and we have 14 teams with over 270 students from the Middle and Upper School participating in fall sports. At Miami Country Day we are committed to the “education of the whole child.” We think of each child in terms of their six potentials: intellectual, physical, aesthetic, social, emotional and spiritual. At our school athletics and the arts are not just extracurriculars they are part of our mission. Please get out and support our student athletes and you will be giving voice to our mission as well. Country Day greatly appreciates all of the businesses who have advertised in our fall publication. Please support our Business Partners and let them know you heard about them here at Country Day. Here’s to a great fall sports season. Go SPARTANS! Best Wishes, Dr. John Davies

Athletic Director Welcome The Miami Country Day School athletic program is designed to provide our studentathletes with unique learning experiences. We pride ourselves in having a competitive and successful athletic program, which involves over seventy-five percent of our middle and upper school student body. The emphasis of our program is based on dedication, desire and effort, rather than winning at all costs. The fundamental purpose of the Miami Country Day School athletic program is to empower each student-athlete with a life-long appreciation for physical activity, to provide him/her the opportunity to become experienced, skilled, and confident in any athletic area he/she chooses, and above all, to make his/her athletic experience rewarding and educational. We believe in education through sport. Each Miami Country Day School student-athlete will have the opportunity to participate in a reasonably diverse athletic program in the area of his/her own choice and at a level of play and difficulty that is demonstrated by his/her ability, interests, or grade level . He/she will be afforded the opportunity to benefit from the leadership and guidance of dedicated and knowledgeable coaches, who place great emphasis on commitment, sportsmanship, teamwork, skill improvement, and achievement. The Miami Country Day School Athletic Department prides itself on its outstanding reputation of sportsmanship. Each coach and student-athlete are expected to demonstrate exemplary sportsmanship and to respectfully represent oneself, family, team, and the entire Miami Country Day community. The value of the lessons learned by exhibiting good sportsmanship will last a lifetime. Our athletic programs are committed to providing all student-athletes with an experience which will inspire them to fully develop their individual gifts. We believe in the development of the “Whole Child”, which allows our athletic program to be kept in proper prospective and adheres to the philosophies and principles set forth in the Miami Country Day School mission statement. The strength of our athletic teams comes from believing that “giving one’s best effort” is the foundation for success, not only in athletics, but in all aspects of life. We believe a successful sports program enhances a solid education. Students’ involvement in interscholastic athletics is an integral part of the Miami Country Day School educational experience. Go SPARTANS!

Admission Welcome

Miami Country Day School creates champions in Academics, Athletics, and the Arts. Contact us to find out how to become a part of our community. On behalf of the Admission and Financial Aid Office, welcome to the 2015-2016 school year! I am thrilled to begin another year of award-winning athletics, academics and the arts - especially as we await the completion of our new Center for the Arts. Miami Country Day School provides an exceptional educational experience, but also an opportunity for students to thrive by discovering and nurturing their interests and passions. The Admission team is committed to our vision of Building our Community through Meaningful Connections. We offer both private and group tours as well as parent and student led tours. What we hear most from families is how happy their children are at MCDS and how parents wish they themselves had had the opportunity to attend MCDS. This is why so many alumni become our current parents and grandparents. I invite you to contact the admission office to learn more about this very special place. Sincerely, Ingrid Palmisano, LCSW, CAP Director of Admission and Financial Aid

Whether on the field, In the spotlight, Or competing in the pool... MCDS Students Rock! “We all know Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as one of the basketball greats. He is also a celebrated author and cultural historian. A serious student and fan of jazz, Jabbar once observed, ‘Music is really something that makes people whole.’ His insight around music could easily be expanded to include all of the visual and performing arts. The arts, like athletics, do indeed help make us whole, which is why they both continue to be critical to Country Day’s mission of educating the whole child.”

Home of the Spartans Teamwork, sportsmanship, tradition, dedication, self-esteem—these are all values fostered by our athletics program that stay with student-athletes for a lifetime. The fundamental purpose of the athletic program centers on: encouraging each student-athlete to appreciate the lifelong values of physical activity; providing the opportunity to become experienced, skilled, and confident in any athletic arena; and above all, making the athletic experience rewarding and educational. We offer collegiate facilities and endless options for our 37 athletic teams to challenge themselves and each other to improve and grow. Our coaches, many of whom are teachers at the school, provide instruction and encouragement to build strong teams on and off the field. We compete against some of the top teams throughout Florida and have earned district and regional championships in sports such as golf, cross country, basketball, volleyball, swimming, soccer, tennis, baseball, softball, and lacrosse. As a student-athlete at Miami Country Day, lifelong friendships and memories are forged while developing an appreciation for health, fitness, and sport.

About Miami Country Day Miami Country Day School was founded in 1938 as a residential proprietary boarding school for boys through eighth grade and has evolved remarkably over the past 75 years. The School has become a coeducational, nonprofit, nondenominational school with approximately 1225 students in Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 representing approximately 32 countries. The school’s first twelfth grade graduating class was in 1981. The school is accredited by FCIS and SACS; active membership is maintained in SACAC, NACAC, NAIS, SAIS, CASE, CRIS, ERB, American Library Association, and the College Board. Our Mission: Miami Country Day School is a college preparatory learning community committed to educating the whole child. Through the core values of honor, respect, wisdom, and compassion, we prepare students to be lifelong learners. We inspire our children to develop their intellectual, physical, aesthetic, social, emotional, and spiritual potentials by valuing every student every day. Our Core Values: Honor fosters integrity and truthfulness, which lead to correct and trustworthy actions. Respect encourages valuing the rights and opinions of others as well as acting with consideration towards others. Wisdom defines intelligence and knowledge, which comes with experience and allows for good judgment and insight. Compassion expects action towards others with empathy, care, acceptance, and understanding.

Summer Programs

When your child views foundational concepts through the lens of their own unique interests and talents, a love of learning is born. That learning does not stall when school lets out. Our summer programs provide a unique opportunity for children to dig deeper into their interests, advance emerging talents, and cultivate friendships that last a lifetime. As Miami’s premier college preparatory school, we recognize the importance of the summer months in a child’s overall development, and we are proud to have offered summer programming for close to 90 years.
