What impact did the completion of the Campaign for the Arts and resulting Center for the Arts have on our school and the surrounding community? The Center for the Arts is now an integral part of the Miami Country Day School campus. In addition to providing a welcoming lobby and gallery space, first class theater, and large beautiful classroom spaces for our students, it also serves as a first-class venue that attracts people from the surrounding community to enjoy amazing programs through the John Davies Cultural Arts Series. I am so appreciative of each and every person who gave generously of their philanthropic dollars to make this project happen. Was the acquisition of the Leonard Property something you were involved in and what does that mean for the school moving forward? As President of the Board, yes, I was involved in approving and finalizing the details of the purchase. Currently, the property serves as a beautiful green space that provides extra play and practice areas; there is the possibility that the land can be used for a new Upper School in the future. Being a 22-acre school, we are landlocked by NE 6th Avenue, a canal and a golf course, so any space we have is valuable and the school will find the best way to use it. How do you feel the search process for the Head of School went and are you happy about the results? For those of you who were here on May 5, 2018, a year after the Center for the Arts officially opened its doors, we had a wonderful celebration to honor Dr. John Davies for his 32 years of selfless service to Miami Country Day School, 18 years as Head of School. Upon reflection, the 2017-18 school year was one of the busiest I remember of the past 16 years serving on the Board. This was my first experience serving on a search committee to replace our Head of School. Having had only six Heads in our 80-year history, it was going to be a challenge and new territory for all of us. Making the decision to have an Interim Head of School first, proved important for this transition. In November 2017, we announced to the community that James Connor would take the Interim position. With over 35 years of independent school leadership experience, starting as a teacher and a coach, Jim was most recently the Head of School at Germantown Academy in Philadelphia.

“ I liked Jim Connor from the very first handshake and knew from the start he would be the perfect hire for Interim Head of School. It was clear that Jim had done his homework and loved what he had read and heard about Miami Country Day and wanted to be here. He offered to come down early so he could meet and get to know everyone. He emphasized relationships and the value and importance of different perspectives and opinions. He wanted very much to be part of our family, and we wanted him. He accepted the position before I could finish asking him. We should all be proud that we have built a school community that can attract people of the caliber and character of Jim Connor.” - Chris Bellows

Following the announcement, we began the search process in early December 2017 for our permanent Head of School for the 2019-20 school year. Following a comprehensive national search that involved all members of our community, the Search Committee was unanimous in their nomination of Mrs. Mariandl Hufford as the person best suited to carry the institution forward. Mariandl is the perfect Head of School for Miami Country Day. Brilliant yet humble, a technician and academician, she has been on our radar for a long time and we are blessed to have her. She has an outstanding national reputation and will bring a special kindness and a love for independent education to our campus. When you start talking to her you don’t want the conversation to end. She is so engaging and delightful. What brings you the greatest satisfaction in serving in your role as Board President? Serving as President wasn’t anything that I ever imagined, thought about or aspired to and I didn’t know at the time if I was the right person. In accepting the role, I was committed and continue to be committed to doing whatever the school needs me to do. I get satisfaction whenever I walk on campus, whether it’s to attend one of the many meetings that comes with the territory, to attend an athletic event, which I prefer over meetings, or to participate in any one of the art events in the Taplin Gallery or performances by students or outside artists in the John Davies Theater. Seeing the campus alive, which is all the time, gives me great joy. I fondly refer to it as Miami Country Day and Night! What are you most proud of about Country Day? I’m most proud of how the entire school community came together and participated in the Head of School search process. We had not done anything on this scale in our 80-year history, but we came together in such a positive and forceful way; it was amazing to see how deeply people cared for our school and our mission. So many people turned out with energy and enthusiasm, asked questions, answered surveys and gave the Search Committee the direction it needed to make the best choice for the school. Why is philanthropy important to the school? Why do you give? Philanthropy sustains the school and allows us to do so much more than tuition alone will permit. It also cultivates and nurtures a spirit of love and compassion for our school and allows each person to invest in Country Day’s mission and future. As I have said, each person who has contributed can truly say that they have helped build what we are today and what we will grow to be.

LEGACY SOCIETY The Legacy Society provides long-term financial support for Miami Country Day School. The following individuals and families are supporting the financial sustainability of the school through bequests made by a will, life insurance policies, or other estate and planned gifts. Planned gifts add strength to the school’s sustainability by funding endowment, capital projects, and programming. Endowed funds generate income and support scholarships, teachers, buildings, programs and other important purposes set by the Board of Trustees. The Planned Giving Advisory Council, chaired by James W. Moore ’65, will dedicate a new sculpture on campus Saturday, December 15. This sculpture will recognize and honor the current and future members of the Legacy Society.

Chris Bellows with Mila, at the Spartan Homecoming football game. Mila is the daughter of Chris Polite ’02 and Jackie Niang, Coordinator of Auxiliary Programs and MCDS Business Partners. Chris Bellows and Chris Polite met in 1994 when Bellows co-founded the Right Trak program with former NFL player Lawrence Wright and Lawrence’s high school counselor to help inner-city students get the most out of their life. Some of Bellows’ “students” would go on to enroll and graduate from MCDS and Chris Polite was one of them. Polite serves as the Assistant Athletic Director and Spartan Football coach. He is a member of the Class of 2016 Spartan Athletic Hall of Fame. Speaking about Bellows in 2014 when he was named Board President, Polite said, “Bellows is someone who has spent the majority of his adult life committing himself to serving others, and his willingness to do so has been of great benefit to a number of people, especially our youth. What’s special about Bellows’ giving is that he does it for the right reasons and never expects anything in return. He is constantly pushing people to find their light and more times than not is able to guide them towards it.”

The Bergman family joined the Country Day community eight years ago when they moved from London. James and his wife, Alex, have three children at the school; Chloe, 9th grade, Jack, 11th and Josh, PK3. They consider themselves “MCDS lifers” and plan to be here until their youngest graduates in 2033. The Bergmans are Major Gift Chairs, have served in a leadership role on the Annual Giving Team, and were active in securing gifts for the Campaign for the Arts. James serves on the Philanthropy Committee and he and Alex enjoy connecting other parents to the opportunities available to be involved in the life of the school with their time and resources. His business is in banking technology. “Supporting Miami Country Day means more than just financial support; it is about an involvement in the social and educational institution that is one of the core foundations of our family here in Miami. Since we joined Country Day, the school has given us so much more enjoyment than we could have imagined. All three of our children benefit from the generosity of those who came before us and we look forward to ensuring that future generations will benefit from our support and focus to ensure that MCDS continues to grow from strength to strength.”

Sebastian and his wife, Soledad, are new Alumni parents. Their son, Joaquin, graduated in 2018 and attends Michigan State University. They have two sons still in school; Nicolas, 11th grade and Agustin, 7th. This is the Malo family’s 11th year at Country Day. The Malos are generous supporters of philanthropy at Country Day and last year Sebastian spoke passionately at an event at Joe’s Stone Crab about the reason they gave to the Campaign for the Arts. “Miami Country Day gave our family all of the emotional support when we needed it most. How can you not give something back to a school that makes a difference, not just for your child but for the whole family.” The family has consistently supported Annual Giving, gave a gift to the Center for the Arts, and last year, through his company, Sebastian was a Business Partner and this year is the Title Sponsor for the Arts. Sebastian is President of the Pembroke Pines Ford Dealership; Malo Ventures is a second-generation family-run company that has operated dealerships in Latin America for 50 years. Sebastian serves on the Philanthropy Committee as a member of the Board.

This is the sixth year that Matthew and his wife, Natalia Arias Storm, have been a part of the Country Day community. They have three children; Cecilia in 7th grade, Matteo in 6th, and, Simona in 3rd. The Storms consistently support Annual Giving and they are Ambassadors for the Campaign for the Arts. Matthew participated in the Strategic Planning process previously and serves on the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees. “Our family gives to MCDS so that the School might make the investments required to remain on the cutting edge of education, and to create the best options possible for our children in a rapidly changing world. This investment does not simply translate to improvements in infrastructure but in the School’s ability to continue to attract and retain both superior educators as well as a diverse student body.” Matthew has his BA and MBA from UPenn Wharton School and he is the founding partner of CV Advisors, LLC, global multi-family investment advisors. He is currently on the Museum Board at UPenn and has coordinated a partnership with the school and the archaeological museum at UPenn.

BUD FARREY, Building and Grounds Committee Chair • Why does the school ask for contributions to build new facilities? I’ll use the most recent achievement – the Center for the Arts. Prior to the opening of this facility in May, 2017, students were in the same spaces for art, music and drama that my daughter used in the early 80s to early 90s. There were 450 students as compared to 1320 today. It was time. Aesthetics is one of the potentials identified in the Mission statement and this new gem on our campus has truly been transformational. Rather than increase tuition more to cover the cost of capital projects such as this, the school conducts capital campaigns to fund these type of improvements with philanthropic gifts. • How does the work of your committee help sustain the school? The school maintains a PPRSM account to fund deferred maintenance and major repairs that come up, such as, roof repairs or replacement of air conditioning systems. Thankfully, the committee recognizes the importance of being proactive and prepared for incidents beyond our control. Moving forward, new construction such as the Center for the Arts, includes a commitment to increasing endowment for program and maintenance purposes by allocating 20% of every gift towards the endowment while 80% funds the building costs. • What is the most important thing the school is doing with regard to sustainability? It’s not one important thing; it’s a combination of many and we constantly explore new ways to ensure the school can sustain itself over the next 80 years. We do all we can with our architects, builders and other vendors to ensure that the products we’re getting are top rate and meet or exceed standards set for new construction. Upgrading systems such as our fire alarms and mass communication system is important to ensure the safety of our school community. In the Center for the Arts there is a chilling system for our HVAC and that process will save the school money on electric costs over time. • Why are you involved as a Board member and Chair of this important committee? When I started my tenure on the board in 1987, I had no idea it would continue to today – 31 years later! I am involved because I believe in Miami Country Day School and its Mission. I’ve seen changes in leadership, teachers come and go, students and families celebrate graduation together, and alumni returning as parents! It’s a special place and I am grateful to be a part of this unique community. I’ve seen the campus develop and the primary reason for the Building & Grounds Committee is because with quality facilities we’re going to attract high caliber teachers and with wonderful teachers the school provides the quality of education expected of our community. I feel like the work of the Building and Grounds committee in collaboration with Finance and Philanthropy, has created a top notch campus to support students today and tomorrow.

VANESSA ABRAMOWITZ, Philanthropy Committee Chair • Why does the school ask people to donate? Miami Country Day, like all other independent private schools, depends solely on tuition and donations to operate. Like most other schools, we need to cover all of the basic expenses but that alone is not enough to support the school we are trying to create for our children. We are not reaching for an ordinary education; we are looking for the best! We want the best faculty, the best programming and the best infrastructure. This level of education can be achieved with the extremely generous donations from our Country Day families. Whether our kids are in Lower, Middle or Upper School, are alumni, or have had only a brief encounter with Country Day, there is something that connects each of us and makes us all a part of this amazing community. It is imperative that each one of us supports it to the best of our ability. • How does the work of your committee help sustain the school? The Philanthropy Committee is vital to the school’s sustainability. The philanthropic support assures that the budget for the day-to-day running of the school is covered and it is also there to keep us looking into the future. It would be contradictory to have an educational institution that is not constantly looking at progress. Miami Country Day continuously considers questions such as…What is the next innovation in educational technology? How can we get the best educators to join our faculty? What new programs should we be adding to our curriculum that will most benefit our students and their future? At the same time, we need to continually re-evaluate what we do have and see how it can be improved. Do we need to invest more money in security? What can we offer our faculty to continue their progress and education? Most of these changes can only happen with the support of the Philanthropy Committee. It is because of our Capital Campaigns, like the most recent Campaign for the Arts, our Planned Giving opportunities and our Annual Giving program that we are able to fuel this progress for our students and teachers. • Why do you and your husband, Larry, donate to Annual Giving and Capital Campaigns? Larry and I strongly believe that we need to support this community that has given our three children so much. It would be easy to simply fly under the radar and take advantage of what others have contributed, however, flying under the radar does not ignite progress, and it definitely does not create this amazing institution where our children attend. Thanks to many donors before us our children have been able to have a stellar academic education, and also be a part of athletics, music, art, drama, publishing, community service, etc. We hope that our donations will do the same for the next group of Country Day students to come.

SOL SAAD, Finance Committee Chair

• How do you define sustainability? We define Financial Sustainability as the prudent management of the school’s financial affairs to sustain itself over the long term, perpetuating its ability to fulfill its mission. Sustainability also includes leadership succession planning, adaptability, mitigating undue risks and strategic planning. As part of the sustainability process, each year we work hard to achieve a well-balanced operating budget, to provide the programs, services and capital expenditure projects needed to sustain our long-term growth. We also look to create new predictable streams of revenue, like our expanding Auxiliary Programs, which help to defray some of our operating costs. Just as importantly, we look at ways to significantly increase our endowment funds and operating cash positions, to offset unexpected changes in the market. We measure our financial sustainability through various performance indicators, such as Equity to debt ratio (Net Assets/ Debt), Sustainability Ratio (Net Assets/ Expenses), Deferred Revenue Coverage (Cash on Hand/ Deferred Revenue), Net Tuition Coverage (Net Tuition/ Gross Tuition) and Liquidity Ratio (Cash/ Monthly Expenses). Over the last five years, our auditors have given us high marks for these important financial ratios on sustainability. • How important is endowment to sustainability? Continuing to strengthen the school’s endowment over the long term is a key to sustaining our programs and facilities. The recent Campaign for the Arts is one example of forcing endowment by taking 20% of every dollar raised and dividing it equally between program and building endowment. The school’s endowment was grown in the last fifteen years or so from $400,000 to over $11 million today. This didn’t happen overnight, obviously, and efforts to grow the endowment will continue through gift-giving and philanthropy.

KEVIN KING ’95, Sustainability Committee Chair

• What do you see on the horizon for sustainability for our school? I believe we are on the precipice of significant change in education. Integrating the need to educate via the traditional model of fundamentals and college preparatory coursework, with the newer vision of more creative and innovative learning models, allowing multiple paths to graduation is a balance which can be struck. We must also be cognizant of our adherence to our founding principles of keeping these in line with our Mission or educating the Whole Child, and maintaining a safe, family friendly and happy campus atmosphere. I believe MCDS is well positioned and has many faculty, staff, Trustees and Advisors studying these issues daily, which will ensure the school provides the best available pathway to success. From a sustainability standpoint, this carries a financial commitment as well as many hours of work. Most importantly however, is for our community to be open and engaged in working with leadership and staff to help take our school to new heights. We should strive to become the institution at which parents will continue to see the value in their children’s experiences and nurture their love of learning. • What is the most important thing the school is doing in that regard? We are spending a lot of time discussing and looking at our value proposition, admissions demand, student attrition, financial aid, tuition remission and fundraising trends. This exercise should ensure that our tuition rates and fundraising initiatives can support the programming our parents and students expect, allow us to continue to increase the diversity on our campus, and hire and retain the best faculty we can find. We must deliver a school that has a philosophy our community understands, a process that produces the outcomes that are expected of us, and the people who facilitate an enriching environment for all families at Miami Country Day School. • How do you define sustainability? Sustainability to me and my committee, in the context of a non-profit independent school, would be defined as finding the balance between supplying a viable, comprehensive and thoughtful program (academics, arts, athletics, the Whole Child experience) with the ability and willingness of our constituency to support the mission through tuition as well as annual giving and participating when asked during a capital campaign. • How does the work of your committee help sustain the school? An example includes enrollment in extracurricular programs that our families are currently paying for at providers other than MCDS. Our aim is to examine if we can offer similar programming at similar prices therefore adding revenue to the school and making after-school activities more convenient for our parents and students. We are studying things like our benefits package, endowment investment & spending policies, and alternative learning models along with their respective cost structures.

SAFETY AND SECURITY YEARS

Q&A WITH SEAN HILL, DIRECTOR OF SECURITY During the 2017-2018 school year, what improvements were made to better secure our campus?

There have been several solutions we have implemented to improve safety on campus. In my opinion, one of the most important decisions we made was the hiring of Auxiliary Services to perform a safety audit. The safety audit produced some findings that we are working on implementing in the near future.

What new procedures have we implemented that better assist our faculty members and students during a drill or emergency situation? We are implementing a new School Emergency Operations Plan (SEOP) which highlights an Incident Command System (ICS) that will assign designated faculty/staff responsibilities during any incident, emergency or non-emergency. The ICS implements accountability of the faculty/staff in the event of any incident. In the future, we will consider student involvement with the Incident Command Team.

Are there additional procedures or enhancements coming down the pike?

School-Pass is a recent enchancement, which provides a multi-layered solution to deliver student-centered safety from perimeter security to car line, automation and bus management, to afterschool activities. We also employed a 100% ID check at all times during the day, nights, and on weekends. We are currently looking into a visitor management system that will improve the process of gaining access to campus.

What can our parents, students, faculty, and staff do/be aware of on a daily basis that will better the safety of our campus?

Be aware of your surroundings. If you see something that does not look right, say something to staff/faculty, a Miami Shores Police officer, or a security guard. Please register your vehicles with School-Pass on My Country Day so that we can begin to identify members of the community from those who are not.

Why do you give and why is it meaningful for you?

Every time I walk into our beautiful Center for the Arts, the impact of giving is prevalent. I give because I constantly see how the collective generosity of our community positively enhances the learning of all our students. As Booker T. Washington said, “Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.” Seeing our students reap the benefits of giving, makes me happy!

What is Philanthropy to you?

Philanthropy is so much more than monetary donations. It is a model that inspires others to envision a better future. It’s about giving time, money, imparting professional wisdom or expertise with the genuine intent of helping others. It is about giving resources selflessly to benefit our community. Resources come in many forms and those giving believe in the positive impact it will have on our society.

Why do you enjoy giving back to Country Day?

The youth are the future! As parents, I believe we have to try our best to prepare our children for an uncertain future. By giving, we are able to provide more opportunities and hopefully a balanced experience. At MCDS, the evidence of our community’s collective philanthropy is concrete and there are daily examples of how we have enhanced the school experience for our community. I feel proud to be a part of this and know that by giving, I have helped to foster the whole child.

ANNUAL GIVING 2017-2018 Miami Country Day School is fortunate to have a committed Annual Giving team of parents, alumni, and grandparent volunteers. Their dedication is shown through their many hours spent on campus in meetings, planning, and working on the Annual Giving Campaign. Our volunteers participate in conversations with fellow families, phone calls to parents, emails to friends, phone-a-thons, and Impact Day with Sammy the Spartan. It’s this dedication and passion for our school that truly makes a difference every day for our students and teachers. The rewards of giving are limitless and the impact it has in my life is deep and profound. I also give because it is an obligation we all have in order to achieve a fulfilling existence. Giving is not an option to me, it is part of my everyday life. What is Philanthropy to you? Philanthropy is an overall concept that transforms the meaning of life. It is a culture that transforms the life of all givers and receivers. Why do you enjoy giving back to Country Day? MCDS is an outstanding institution and the impact it has on my children has been revealed over time; it is not immediate. Their social skills, caring for others and for their community, life interests, and academic preparation and achievements, are an instrumental part of the “whole child” the school inspires. “ The Center for the Arts has greatly impacted the Ceramics, Sculpture, and Advanced Ceramics programs. Simply put: my classes have more space--we are no longer bumping into each other! The CFA has provided the program with three operational kilns, which not only accommodate the flow of production, but also serve the art teachers in other divisions who work on clay projects throughout the year. The spacious classroom allows for more storage of clay, student work, glazes, and other materials and supplies. This, in turn, allows for more students per class, as well as encourages “thinking big” among the students. It is gratifying to know that more students now have the opportunity to take Ceramics/Sculpture courses, and the program can expand, as well. As a Fine Arts and a Math Teacher, it’s very convenient to have all of my classes taught in one place!”

CLASS OF 2018 GIVING SENIOR SCULPTURE A new tradition was established by the Class of 2017 to honor seniors and their families. Continuing the tradition, the Class of 2018 and their families dedicated a beautiful copper sculpture, created by Octavio Cuellar. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am an artist that has dedicated myself to investigate through the sculpture the forms in which the art approaches the human themes. Each blow, each welding allows me to take from a sheet unrepeatable lights and shadows, textures, beautiful traces of defects and inaccuracy, obtaining works of a strong visual apprehension with a timeless halo, which acquire used objects.â&#x20AC;? We are honored to have this original work of art created for our senior class. The copper ballerina was placed outside the Center for the Arts. With their gifts, our senior families helped raise an additional $94,364 for Annual Giving. Thank you for making history and continuing this unique tradition together!

INDIAN CREEK COUNTRY CLUB 7500 CLUB Because of our 7500 Club members’ commitment to Miami Country Day School in 2017-18, we saw an enriched student experience with state-of-the art technology, enhanced safety and security systems, innovative curriculum, and improved classroom resources. Fifty-nine 7500 Club members generously donated $652,580 to the Annual Giving Campaign, which directly impacts our students and teachers. In April, 7500 Club members were honored at Indian Creek Country Club with a sunset cocktail hour overlooking Biscayne Bay while listening to classical melodies played by flutist, Cathi Marro. Dinner at a royal table followed as members celebrated the 5th year anniversary of the 7500 Club, Dr. Davies’ retirement, and Julie and Tom Pronesti’s dedication to the 7500 Club. Julie Pronesti, Annual Giving Chair and Founding Dean of the 7500 Club, asked members to raise a glass and toast to the incredible members of the 7500 Club. “The 7500 Club is a success because of each and every one of you! THE PA L M SOCIETY Members of the Palm Society provide opportunities for our students to engage in hands-on-educational experiences and enhance our campus and facilities in order to continue to provide a world-class learning environment. Eighty-one parent, alumni, grandparent, and faculty members donated $2,500 or more and raised over $228,266 together as a society for the Annual Giving Campaign. To celebrate 2017-18, Palm Society members were treated to an evening at the home of Trustee, Angela Julien and her husband, Daniel. Their daughter, Tara is currently in 11th grade and has been at Miami Country Day for 12 years. Members mingled and enjoyed a sunset evening conversing while relishing wonderful food, wine and friendship. Angela volunteers her time throughout the year on the Annual Giving Team and encourages fellow parents to give back to Country Day. This year, Angela is thrilled to be the next 7500 Club Dean. Angela shared “I am honored and excited to be the 7500 Club’s Dean! It sounds cliché, but it is absolutely the truth: being a part of bringing the Center for the Arts to reality has been a dream come true. Moore ’68, rallying donors, John Davies sharing his vision and Arts education research, Gary Butts keeping the timeline on track, the Office of Philanthropy’s outstanding Arts Campaign outreach, the Arts faculty pouring over furniture catalogs, the Parents’ Association’s pledge, the MCDS faculty as a whole – cheerleading, the incredibly generous donors…well the list could go on and on….everyone in our community had a stake in making the vision come to life. Even our students raised funds and contributed to the process. When we finally moved into the CFA, it was truly an entire - MCDS community accomplishment! A Masterpiece!! And now our dreams continue beyond concrete to the reason we are all at Country Day: students flourishing in an environment that supports and fosters growth and gives us the opportunity to nurture each student’s personal potential. Theatrical productions, visual art shows, student’s dance performances and musical concerts are now honored by their space, which is truly MCDS mission-appropriate. Our entire community has been elevated with the Center for the Arts. It is a meeting place, a creative learning space, a cultural centerpiece and a gift that we share with our neighbors through the John Davies Cultural Arts Series.
