Part of our school’s Mission is to prepare students to be lifelong learners, and our Summer Academies are our Mission in practice. S.T.E.M. Academy

S.T.E.M., or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, is a powerful suite of courses designed for 21st Century learners. Humans are, by nature, insatiably curious. At MCDS’ Summer Academies, we nurture inquisitive minds that understand that the questions asked are just as important as the answers they yield.


Grades K – 5 LEGO Workshop: Robotics NEW

Session I: June 13 – 17 | Session II: July 25 – 29 Monday – Friday | 9 AM – 3 PM | Grades SK – 5 • Learn basic static structures used in robotics by applying the fundamentals of math and science • Build robots and program them • Enjoy playing and learning how pneumatics works, using sensors and motors • Compete with robots in mini team competitions and demonstrate your projects in a show and tell to parents

LEGO Workshop: Animation NEW $450

Session I: June 20 – 24 | Session II: August 1 – 5 Monday – Friday | 9 AM – 3 PM | Grades SK – 5 • With your friends and partner, build your own guided mini-movie set and create your own animated movie using thousands of colorful bricks and pieces, including characters provided or ones you bring or make! • Make your animated movie using stop-motion and live video techniques • Edit your movie and add exciting sound effects, music, narration, and titles • Your finished movies are e-mailed to you

Emagination Technology Workshop: Discover, Design, Do! NEW

June 20 – 24 | Monday – Friday | 9 – 11:45 AM | Grades 4 – 5 • Embark on a journey of inquiry and creativity • With an array of apps and online resources, design and develop your own technology project • Do you want to create your own personal webpage to promote your dog walking or cat sitting service? Is your passion soccer and you would like to start writing a blog about it? Are you inspired to study endangered species such as chimpanzees or elephants, and use the web to find out ways to help them? • If you love an activity, but have not had time during the school year to focus on it, this is the workshop for you! • iPads will be available, but you are welcome to bring your own if you wish

Session I: July 11 – 15 | Session II: July 18 – 22 Monday – Friday | 9 AM – 3 PM | Grades SK – 5 • Become an artist, architect, engineer, inventor and maker! • Launch rockets, make catapults, collaborate, build structures with fun materials, tinker with real tools, make a simple circuit, marble mazes, and learn computer coding

July 5* – 8 | Tuesday – Friday | 9 AM – 3 PM | Grades 6 – 12 • Learn how to conceptualize app ideas and draw prototypes on paper • Understand basic principles of user testing and user design • Refine prototype into a high-fidelity, click-through mock-up to show off to family and friends

Grades K – 5 Get Click’n Photography Workshop

June 6 – 10 | Monday – Friday | 9 – 11:45 AM | Grades 5 – 8 • Get creative as you learn the basics of digital photography: camera settings, composition, and lighting • All students will take home unique prints of their own! • Learn how to use digital photo processing and editing tools with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop • Please bring a point-and-shoot camera to class (DSLR preferred)

Shock: A Dance-Step Fusion NEW $450

Session I: June 27 – July 1 | Session II: July 5* – 8 Monday – Friday | 9 AM – 3 PM | Grades 1 – 5 • Stepping is a rising art form and an important part of America’s artistic and cultural heritage • In stepping, the body is used as an instrument to create intricate rhythms and sounds through a combination of footsteps, claps, and spoken word • Take the stage and perform intricate, up-beat choreography from around the world • Learn a variety of warm-up exercises, the history behind step dance, and perform choreography for students, family, and friends! • Please bring a water bottle and comfortable shoes Summer Academies 11

Ukuleles NEW $225 July 25 – 29 | Monday – Friday | 9 – 11:45 AM | Grades 4 – 5 • Ukulele is fast becoming a popular instrument among musicians! • Come learn some basic chords and strumming techniques that will blast you into playing tons of tunes with your friends • Ukulele not required, but you can bring your own if you have one

Steel Drum Ensembles NEW $225 July 25 – 29 | Monday – Friday | 12:15 – 3 PM | Grades 4 – 5 • Become a member of a steel pan ensemble for a week! • Learn basic steel pan playing techniques and rhythms • Learn some traditional island music as well as some fun pop tunes. Friday performance for families!

Garage Band NEW $225 August 1 – 5 | Monday – Friday | 9 – 11:45 AM | Grades 4 – 5 • Ever wonder how sound effects and music are added to cartoons? Want to learn how to write music for movies? Then this class is for you! • Come join us for an exciting class learning how to compose music for movies, cartoons, commercials and Podcasts using GarageBand software • No musical knowledge required, just bring your imagination!

From mindfulness meditation to AP Calculus AB Warm-Up, Summer Academies provide a nurturing learning environment that prepares students to be lifelong learners.


Grades K – 5 Chess NEW

Session I: June 13 – 17 | Session II: June 20 – 24 Session III: July 11 – 15 | Session IV: July 18 – 22 Monday – Friday | 9 – 11:45 AM | Grades 1 – 5 • Learn the basics of the chess board and algebraic notation, the material value of the pieces, and basic seven elements in chess for evaluating a position • Discover how to check mate with a queen and how to checkmate with a rook • Introductory level tactics include pin, skewer, double attacks and back rank mate

Graphic Novel Course NEW

June 20 – July 1 | Monday – Friday | 12:15 – 3 PM | Grades 4 – 5 • Graphic novels are wildly popular, and with good reason! They’re fast-paced, visually exciting, expand vocabulary, and positively impact literacy skill development • There are graphic novels for every age, taste, and interest • During these two weeks, read and discuss one of the best examples of this genre and spend time soaking in the carefully rendered art accompanying the text • Using iPad apps, campers will also create their own story by choosing backgrounds, characters, props, and writing dialogue

July 25 – 29 | Monday – Friday | 9 – 11:45 AM | Grades 6 – 7 • This enrichment class is designed for those students wishing to get a “head start” going into Pre-Algebra at the end of the summer • Math topics explored in detail include: solving 2 – 3 step linear equations/inequalities, operations with rational integers, working with proportions and percent, and graphing lines on a coordinate plane • Both traditional pencil and paper exercises will be performed in class as well as online activities

August 1 – 5 | Monday – Friday | 9 – 11:45 AM | Grades 7 – 8 • This enrichment class is designed for those students wishing to get a “head start” going into Integrated Math 1 at the end of the summer • Math topics explored in detail include: solving 3 – 4 step linear equations/inequalities (including fractions and grouping symbols), working with absolute value, graphing lines on a coordinate plane involving multiple methods including slope-intercept, and working with triangles and parallel lines • Both traditional pencil and paper exercises will be performed in class as well as online activities

Grades 9 – 12 AP Calculus AB Warm-Up

August 1 – 5 | Mon./Wed./Fri. | 9 AM – 12 PM | Grades 10 – 12 • This course is taught by an experienced AP Calculus teacher and designed for students entering AP Calculus AB who want to make sure they are well-prepared for the rigor and pace of Advanced Placement math • Develop your mathematical maturity reviewing important functions and their graphs (especially trigonometry), grow comfort with using your calculator, and focus on any particular weaknesses they need to improve • Enjoy the relaxed, but focused, grade-free environment of doing mathematics!

Miami boasts a strong and vibrant international presence. As such, we recognize the value of offering opportunities to learn languages in the summer in addition to the school year! For adult language courses, see page 23.


Grades 1 – 5 Mandarin Chinese NEW $300

Session I: June 6 – 10 | Session II: June 13 – 17 Monday – Friday | 9:00 – 11:45 AM | Grades 1 – 5 • Learn the basic structures of the Mandarin Chinese language with emphasis on developing fundamental skills (listening, speaking, and grammar) of spoken Mandarin Chinese with application to a number of familiar, everyday topics • Use and understand basic sentence patterns and vocabulary using pinyin (spelling words using the western alphabet) • Read and write using modern Chinese characters Interspersed throughout the course is an introduction to various aspects of Chinese culture
