SUMMER PROGRAMS
Summer 2015
#MCDSummerLove
History before there was a school, there was a camp. Miami Country Day School was founded in 1938, but its origins are closely tied to the world of Summer Programs. In 1926, L.B. Sommers and Doc Abele took over a defunct summer camp formerly run by the YMCA. The camp was situated atop Lookout Mountain, near the point where Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama touch. The staff at Cloudmont became legendary, and the success of the camp was phenomenal. The key was simple enough: total involvement for eight weeks in a world of nature, sports, creative activity, superb food, and the instinctive knowledge of the needs and desires of the growing boy. The men who were campers and teachers at Cloudmont who went on to national prominence in varied fields are legion. Hundreds of parents of Cloudmont boys came to realize what the Sommers-Abele team were capable of in the teaching and development of young boys of school age. And somewhere along the way, these two men also began to realize it. Camp Cloudmont would become the mother-lode of Miami Country Day School. Now, 76 years after the school’s founding and 89 years since the start of Camp Cloudmont, our summer opportunities include coed sports, specialty camps, travel programs, academic courses, and, of course, our everpopular Day Camp. But, one thing remains the same, summers at Country Day rock!

visiting campus Miami Country Day prides itself on putting the safety and security of our students and staff first. The gated campus requires all visitors to identify themselves and go through a quick background check before entering. All parents and visitors are required to report to the Camp Office. No adults should be on campus without an escort. If you decide to park and walk your camper onto campus, please note you will be required to park in the North Parking Lot and must show a Miami Country Day-issued ID or Driver’s License at the security guard station. In order to save time, we recommend you get a Miami Country Day ID before camp begins. Please visit our Director of Campus Security Allen Tongue at his office located next to the Health Room anytime between 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday – Friday.

arrival and dismissal
Most of our drop-off and pick-up takes place in the North Parking Lot (see pg. 6 for exact location), except for Day Camp, which uses the turnaround at the end of 107th Street. If you have a camper in the Day Camp, you may drop all of your children off on the 107th Street turnaround and a Summer Programs staff member will unite your non-Day Camper with their corresponding group.
swimming pool policy There are certified lifeguards who are trained in CPR on the pool deck at all times. We employ a large and welltrained Aquatics Staff. The ratio of campers to swimming instructors is not greater than 1:5. It is 1:2 with our youngest campers. Cabin counselors who are not in the pool are assigned specific campers to watch during pool time. They are each responsible for counting, re-counting, and counting again their specific campers.
Unless a camper has a doctor’s note and a legitimate reason to not get in the pool (a broken limb, illness, etc.), we expect that campers will go swimming when swim is on their schedule. Every new camper will be required to take a preliminary swim test at the beginning of the week. Campers will be assigned a level and given a colored bracelet to indicate their swimming ability: Green: Passed swim test and can participate in pool activities. Red: Did not pass swim test. Will participate in an alternative activity during pool time. Yellow: Registered for lessons. Please read more below. Your children need to wear their bracelets all week. Please do not take them off. Multi-week campers can expect to receive a new bracelet at the start of every week. If your child is given a red bracelet, he or she has not met the required swim level to swim during camp. We strongly encourage you to register him/her for swim lessons with our Aquatics staff, which can be set up as small group instructional swim lessons during the scheduled swim activity or as private lessons before or after camp. Students who have signed up for swim lessons will be given a yellow bracelet and allowed to swim with instruction during the camp’s scheduled pool time. Call the Aquatics Office at 305-779-6778 to arrange these swim lessons. You may find more information on pg. 12.
playhouse 90: after- and before-care Playhouse 90 offers play-time and fun for campers and parents who want a little more time in the morning or in the afternoons. Our professional before and aftercare staff offers a safe and educational environment for campers from 7:30 – 9:00 AM and from 4:00 – 6:00 PM. Students attending Playhouse 90 must be accompanied to the classroom and picked up in the classroom by a parent. Playhouse 90 is held in the Drama Room, directly across from the Camp Office.

Day Camp Theme Weeks 12 | Miami Country Day School Summer Programs
day camp Letter from the Day Camp Director My name is Carroll Kelly, and it’s my great privilege to be the Day Camp Director at Miami Country Day School. I have been an Upper School Spanish teacher at Country Day for 14 years and a member of the Day Camp for 12. This is my third year as the Day Camp Director, and I’m happy to combine two of my passions – children and fun – to create a magical summer experience for our campers. Thank you so much for sharing your marvelous children with me and my fabulous team of Fungineers. It is our goal to make every day at our Day Camp safe, enriching, and adventurous. Our Camp is not a school. It’s not a Day Care. It’s an EXPERIENCE, and I promise you that in exchange for you sharing your most precious gifts with us, we will give your children the times of their lives. Meet the Fungineers! Check out our staff by visiting our website: summer.miamicountryday.org/meet-the-staff Day Camp Theme Weeks See calendar to the left (page 12). Daily Activities See page 14. Important Reminders: Every Day Announcements and Mail Daily pictures, schedules, and special announcements will be posted on the Day Camp Site every single day. Make sure to check the site frequently so you and your campers don’t miss a moment of the fun! Hours Camp begins each day with the Morning Blast-Off at 9:00 AM and ends at 3:45 PM. Campers who want to be dropped off earlier or picked up later for a little more fun can participate in Playhouse 90. If for whatever reason a camper is not picked up by 4:10 PM or arrives before 8:45 AM, he or she will be taken to Playhouse 90 for supervision. A $15.00 Playhouse 90 fee will be charged. Drop-Off and Pick-Up Drop-off is from 8:40 AM – 9:00 AM and pick-up is from 3:50 PM – 4:10 PM. Our efficient drop-off and pick-up takes place in the Lower School turnaround at the end
of 107 Street (see pg. 6 for exact location). Late campers should report to the Summer Camp Office. WHAT!?! No HUGGING and KISSING our CAMPERS GOODBYE!?! Please – don’t consider us anti-hugging and/or kissing goodbye. We know your love your campers, and we do, too. That’s why we ALL need to HUG and KISS our campers BEFORE the car line. EVERYONE wants to hug and kiss their campers, so in the car line we need to be EFFICIENT. It takes a village, y’all! In the morning, parents simply drop-off the campers with our staff. There is no need for parents to even un-buckle their seatbelts! As a matter of fact, parents are kindly reminded that they need to stay in their vehicles. In the afternoon, we will strap in your little ones for safety and you’ll be on your way! Every car that enters the drop-off and pick-up line must display a yellow name-plate in the dashboard. YOU WILL GET THIS ON THE FIRST DAY OF CAMP. This yellow sheet also contains useful information for you about your campers. If someone besides yourself is picking up your camper, please complete the “Permission for Pick Up” located on our website at: summer.miamicountryday.org/summer-safety Registration This year, Day Camp’s Multi-Week Discounts are only available in bulk purchases. The minimum number of discounted weeks is two. In other words, if you send your child to Day Camp for 6 weeks, he/she is eligible for the 6 week price, which is $375/week. If you should choose to then add a 7th week, you’d have to pay the single week price for that 7th week. Your best bet is to buy in bulk. Uniforms Each camper will be given one Miami Country Day Camp T-shirt on their first day of camp. Additional T-shirts, sweatshirts, and hats can be purchased in the Camp Office, room 102. You can wear last year’s shirts, too. Closed-toe sneakers are a must, as we will be busy and active every day! Students also need pool shoes for swimming. continues on page 15...

day camp, continued What to Bring Water bottle, sunscreen, bug spray, bathing suit, towel, pool shoes, and big smiles. Pre-K and Kindergarten campers also need a change of clothes in case of emergency and a mat for resting A note about sunscreen: It is very important that you apply sunscreen on your campers in the morning and that you teach your children how to apply sunscreen. A note about hair: While we strive to make our camp nature-like, we don’t need to share every part of nature. Lice, while harmless, are not so very nice. We recommend spraying long-hair with hairspray and reiterating with your children the importance of not sharing hats and blankets with their classmates. What to leave at home Jewelry, toys, candy, and electronic devices, including cell phones. We strongly discourage the use of electronic devices during the camp day. If a camper brings an electronic device such as a phone or a video game, we will hold it for him or her in the camp office. You’ve got mail! Make sure you check the Day Camp Site daily for updated pictures, schedules, and announcements. We also rely greatly on email to communicate with parents, so remember to check your messages daily to hear from us! Movie Nights Every Friday night is Dinner and a Movie at Day Camp. Watch your email each week to see what’s showing and to fill out the weekly permission slip. For the small fee of $10/per camper, your campers get dinner, snacks, games, supervision, and a movie, and YOU get a Date Night! Campers stay after camp and pick up is between 8:30 – 9:00 PM. Movie Night permission forms are available online each week. Check the Day Camp web pages to register.
