Be more than ordinary. Be eXtraordinary! Dear Upper School Students, Parents, Guardians, and Friends, Over the past nine years, X-Term (formerly Minimester) has become one of Miami Country Day School’s signature programs. This year, we celebrate 10 years of extraordinary moments that have come to symbolize authentic and experiential education at its best. Falling under the GATEway umbrella, X-Term offers Upper School students the opportunity to explore a whole child passion not typically found in the traditional curriculum. Opportunities exist on campus, in the greater Miami community, and at domestic and international locations. X-Term transports students to experiential endeavors where the real world serves as the classroom and education is reimagined. X-Term 2020 will take place from Monday, March 16 - Friday, March 20, 2020. Please note that this week falls immediately prior to spring break. As attendance at X-Term is a graduation requirement, we ask that you plan any personal vacations accordingly. I am proud to share this catalog with you which represents the hard work of our dedicated Upper School faculty and staff. Over the past several months, they have created opportunities for your student that truly speak to experiential and hands-on education. As X-Term turns 10 years old, we wanted to continue to evolve in ways that benefit the most important aspect of Miami Country Day School - its students. So, what’s new for 2020? ● Each X-Term w ill fit into and satisfy one of the following categories that we have deemed as the seven pillars of authentic and experiential education: Academic, Arts, Certificate Granting, Cultural Immersion, Philanthropy/Social Justice, Real World, and Wellness. ● New course offerings: ○ 2020 College Tour: Juniors and Sophomores are invited to take part in our Midwest college tour. Get a head start on checking out some possible colleges! ○ The American Experience: Philadelphia: To highlight the relationship between X-Term and the classroom, we are inaugurating our The American Experience in Philadelphia. Students who are enrolled in US History and American Literature are invited to join us as we partner with the University of Pennsylvania and the PENN Museum in Philadelphia for a week’s worth of inspiring learning opportunities. ○ Coastal Ecology of Miami and the Florida Keys: Love science? Love the water? Want to get away but not travel too far or for a long time? This one’s for you! ○ Spartones Reunite: Think Glee, but Country Day style! Sing to your heart’s delight! ○ X-Term Beatz!: Our students love making music! Learn the art of DJing with professionals right here in Miami. ○ Nuevo Paraíso Orphanage in Honduras: For the first time, an X-Term will happen outside of the traditional X-Term week. We have partnered up with the Nuevo Paraíso Orphanage in Honduras and will be taking a group to work with the orphans from November 22-27, 2019. Students who select this X-Term may choose to continue to work at the local level during X-Term week, or they may choose a second X-Term. ○ Food and Farms: Exploring South Florida’s Agricultural Landscape: Farm to table is all the rage now. Learn how to add sustainability to our daily conversation on food and eating habits. ○ Cardio and Carbs: What’s the best way to explore a city? By foot of course! Join Cardio and Carbs to experience the best views of Miami and fuel up with some great food! ● The Upper School Service Day will now be an integral part of X-Term week. Each X-Term course will design and complete a service-related activity that has a direct correlation to the mission of their X-Term. That will take place on the first day of the week - Monday, March 16, 2020. Students who are traveling outside Miami will also be encouraged to participate in a service learning activity during their X-Term. ● In the past, attendance has declined on the final day of X-Term. Please note that students who have unexcused absences on any day of X-Term will forfeit their graduation credit and receive a grade of “F” on the transcript. Miami Country Day School does not condone starting vacation during school hours. When choosing a course, it is important to consider your student’s interests, the fee, whether he/she is a spring varsity athlete, and how you would envision spending this special week. For a complete list of X-Term policies and requirements, please refer to p. 15 of this catalog. We will begin the registration period on September 5 for those students interested in a travel X-Term only, and continue on September 10 and 12 for local X-Terms. Please refer to p. 14 of this catalog for the detailed registration procedure. If you are interested in learning more about a particular course, I would invite you to our X-Term assembly and fair to be held on Tuesday, August 27 during the Upper School activities block (9:40-10:20am) in the Center for the Arts. Join us to see all the possibilities alongside your student! We have great local opportunities and engaging travel experiences all from which to choose. Read through them carefully and select the courses that best fit your student’s interest. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Glen Turf Director of Global Studies & International Programs

The instruction will be individualized, with each student progressing at his/her own pace. A mandatory post-Xterm commitment from each student will be required, since pieces produced in the last two days will need to be glazed and fired the following week. We will begin by mastering the three skills necessary for successful throwing on the potter's wheel: centering the clay, opening the clay, and building up the wall. After this introduction, students will focus on producing cylinders (from which most other forms originate), then forms of alteration of the cylinder, then bowls, and finally, plates. Along the way, students will learn the art of trimming a suitable foot for their pottery, as well as pulling handles to enhance the functionality of their ware. All of the glazes used will be low-fire (cone 06-04), and non-toxic. Students will also be encouraged to use stains, underglazes, and crystal glazes to personalize their work. Finally, color, compatibility, and design should always be considered, when determining which glazes to use on the thrown forms, to produce a coherent body of work.

X-TERM POLICIES AND REQUIREMENTS: ●

X-Term Enrollment Dates: X-Term sets and adheres to specific dates for enrollment. A drop/add period will follow the enrollment posting. At the final day of the drop/add period, X-Term registration is considered complete. Following drop/add, the only changes that will be honored are in the rare case of a medical situation that will prevent the student from full participation in the course’s activities. Enrollment fees may still be incurred after the drop/add period for local X-Terms and as per the cancellation policy for travel X-Terms. Please see p. 13 for specific date details. X-Term Payment/Fee Structure: X-Term fees will be billed by the Business Office via Smart Tuition in the fall and must be paid in full by December 13, 2019. Limited financial aid opportunities are available. The Office of Admissions and Financial Aid has communicated with families who are eligible to receive an award. X-Term Behavior Guidelines: X-Term is a Miami Country Day School-sponsored program and all school rules apply as stipulated in the Student Responsibilities & Ethics Guide, as well as any further policies established and made clear (in writing or verbally) by X-Term chaperones. All travel X-Term participants and parents/guardians will be required to attend an orientation meeting on February 4, 2020 to review guidelines and mandatory paperwork. X-Term Attendance Policy: X-Term is a graduation requirement and will appear on the Miami Country Day School transcript. Students will receive a grade of Pass/Fail. Students are required to be in attendance all five (5) days of a local X-Term or all specified days of a travel X-Term. Miami Country Day School does not condone taking family vacations during school hours. Please take this into account as you make your Spring Break plans. Failure to do so will result in a loss of graduation credit. Spring varsity athletes may not participate in a travel X-Term and should be mindful of X-Terms that travel off campus. Please follow the guidelines stated on each course description as to the appropriateness for spring athletes.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF X-TERM POLICIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

I have read, understand and agree to all policies related to X-Term as specified on the previous page (p. 15). My family and my child will abide by all policies including, but not limited to; enrollment dates, payment/fee structure, behavioral guidelines as set forth in the Student Responsibilities & Ethics Guide, and the X-Term attendance policy. I understand that failure to abide by the set policies will risk in my student not receiving graduation credit for X-Term 2020 and, therefore, jeopardizing his/her graduation.
