SERVING WOMEN & CHILDREN IN DISTRESS

D

id you know that the Miami Rescue Mission | Broward Outreach Centers had one of the first Centers for Women and Children in Florida? For decades, the Mission had served homeless men, but saw a great need for women and children in the late 1970’s. In 1980, a first of its kind Center was opened for women and children. Our Centers have special programs to help single women, women with children, and families overcome the problems of homelessness and become successful in life. It’s hard to imagine how difficult it would be to be homeless, but to have children and be on the streets is mind-boggling. In just a few weeks, we will be celebrating Mother’s Day. You can make a tremendous impact in the future of the mothers residing in our Centers. The easiest way to help is to make a financial gift by returning the reply piece. Your contributions make it possible to feed, clothe, shelter, transport, provide counseling and case management, and so much more. Our residents do not pay for services. Your time and talents can also make a huge difference in the lives of the mothers. If you are interested in mentoring women, you can become part of Cover Girls. Cover Girls meet with the women and help them in so many ways. Another way to help is to become part of Girlfriends 4 Girlfriends. G4G raises funding for safe and affordable housing for those women leaving our centers. Your support not only helps the women, but changes the lives of their children. Feeding the hungry is Sabrina’s passion. For her Confirmation, she asked her family and friends to donate to feed hungry and homeless at the Broward Outreach Center. She collected and donated $1,050 to sponsor meals for our Good Friday Outreach. She shares her thoughts with us, “I don’t think anyone should be without food. One time I fasted during Ash Wednesday and I was so happy when I finally got to eat. Then I realized that people who go through this every day and it is never over for them, is much worse. I am blessed to do whatever I can to help end this”. Thank you Sabrina and family! We’re having a “Passion with a Purpose” month and finding out what people love to do. We Love Our Volunteers and Supporters Last year, over 9,000 people volunteered their time and talents to help serve the homeless and needy. There are so many ways that you can help: sponsor a food, hygiene, clothing, baby needs, or toy drive; prepare and serve meals; provide tutoring to adults and children; and so much more. Visit www.caringplace.org to find out more. We could not do all that we do without our volunteers.

Food Fest Cooking Many renowned chefs from the SOBE Wine and Food Festival participated in our facilities sharing their exquisite food with our homeless and needy.

Barilla’s Lunch at the Annex The Barilla Company offered an excellent reception to our homeless and needy which was prepared in our Annex building by their chefs.

Homerun for the Homeless On March 14th, Homerun for the Homeless celebrated their first anniversary. Volunteers mentor men who have gone through hard times in their lives, but are now ready for employment and housing. Claude Delorme from the Marlins, right with cup, and the rest of the mentors gave rewards to men who have shown outstanding progress in their recovery path. Thank You Homerun Team! CARINGPLACE.ORG

MARIE HAS A NEW VISION AND FUTURE

“A

s a child, I lived with my uncle who began sexually abusing me at the age of nine. This abuse lasted two years and I ended up running away from home and being placed into foster care. I was confused and hurt as I grew to be an adult. I didn’t do well in school and had no real vision for my life. In my twenties, I became quite a party girl until I was raped. My world collapsed. This horrific part of my life devastated me and yet I still would get with men who were abusive. I was in a cycle of self-hatred and self-blame of why men would mistreat me. My children’s father turned very abusive and I had to leave. I’m so grateful I was able to enter the Center for Women. Thank God for the Center. I have grown so much as a person and have a real vision for my future. I have grown in the Lord and received so much counseling and love. I sleep in peace and now I’m certain to have a better future for myself and my kids. Thank You for helping me!”
