Academic Advising and Career Exploration The mission of the CAS academic advising team is to assist in developing an academic plan that fits your educational and career goals. This may require exploring different majors, co-majors, or minors to find what works best for your interests and aptitudes. Miami's collaborative advising approach begins during summer orientation and continues throughout all four undergraduate years. Meet with your academic advisor once a semester to track your progress toward graduation, help create course schedules to fulfill your degree requirements, and identify resources to assist with any challenges. In addition, the Center for Career Exploration and Success empowers students to engage in career exploration, professional development, and experiential learning to optimize their personal and career potential through connections with employers and the Miami Career Community. Career advisors guide students towards their chosen majors and career fields via nine career clusters — groupings of common occupations within broad career sectors serving as a guide to help determine a path to success.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion We are committed to providing a high-quality learning and workplace environment that is intentionally diverse and equitable, is built on the Inclusive Excellence Framework, and maximizes access to learning. CAS serves as a focal point at Miami for cutting-edge research, critical pedagogy, and curricular offerings in the fields of diversity, critical race, and social justice. We affirm, engage, and value intersections of social identities and differences. Some of our student initiatives include:
• The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority
Participation (LSAMP) STEM Scholars Program
• The Humanities and Social Science (HASS) Scholars Program
• The Arts and Science Multicultural Association (ASMA)
• Dean’s STEMM (Science, Technology,
Equity in Public Health, Mathematics, and Medicine) Scholars

During her sophomore year at Miami, Kelsey embarked on a study abroad experience in Uruguay to learn more about Latin American culture, interning at a feminist collective. This influenced her decision to develop a research project focused on understanding the root causes of femicide throughout Latin America. “I was really inspired by the Uruguayan community and their work to empower women,” she says. Kelsey hopes her investigations could have an impact on U.S. policies on the region in the future.
