Context

1 18th September 2017 Brief B – Pattern Making EGRD4006: developing Making

Patterns exist everywhere, in nature, food, music, fashion , gaming, mathematics, technology and even with in the way we go about our daily lives. A pattern is more than just a beautiful image. It can tell a story, it can change our mood, it can help solve a problem or give us information through data. With the above in mind, questions you should be asking yourself throughout the process should be things like: What is the purpose of the pattern? Is it to stand out or blend in? What is it trying to convey? Where could this be placed? Does it need to repeat?

Brief:

You will be required to reinterpret an existing texture or pattern from the grounds of the university. We want you to explore the university with the main focus of keeping an eye out for interesting textures or existing patterns that you think could inform the basis of your interpretation/idea. To document these textures/patterns you will do this through taking rubbings of these before selecting one to explore and develop.

Constraints

The pattern or texture you have found can not be used in it’s original context (i.e. if it was found on the floor it can’t then be used to make a floor tile), be as experimental as possible with where you imagine the final pattern to exist. It could be on clothing, wallpaper, fabric, ceramic tiles. Think about scale, cropping, rotating, rhythm.

Outcome

An exploration of your selected pattern and present the final pattern in situ (i.e. the context you think is suitable).

Deadline

1 week – You should produce a body of work by the following Monday. The work will be reviewed at formative stage (week 8).
