Rationale
1 27/11/17 Nijhof & Lee – Cupboard to Corridor EGRD4005: developing Making / EGRD4005: developing Thinking
An archive is an accumulation of historically correlative material; a collection of works that speak for periods, institutions and ideologies. An archive retires pieces from their field of action, to be stored for study and conservation. It is here that these objects wait, to be reactivated and energised by presentation in history books or exhibition in galleries. This brief considers the ways in which such historical – or, archival – information can be expressed in alternative spaces. It asks you to think about the possibilities of re-communicating material: the differences between archival and display format, historical and contemporary context, private and public audience. If the archival work has a message, what is it? Do you wish to reinforce or subvert it? How does it engage its audience? Most importantly: how can you use existing material to communicate fresh ideas? Methods of display and curatorial techniques can be examined to inform the design of your exhibit, and to consider the complications and opportunities of three-dimensional and public space. The selected information can be presented in a variety of forms – textual, visual, audio, taking into account the desired interaction and interpretation. Determine the purpose: is it informative or celebratory? How does the information speak: is it discursive or a statement? The ambition is to use design to reactivate archival material; bringing it to new audiences.
