BUILDING HISTORY HIN BUS DEPOT, PENANG
The origin of Hin Bus Depot goes back to 1947, when
The building was built in an art deco style as a centralised
repair, maintaince and storage site for the Hin Bus Company. It was a depot for the“blue buses”known as Hin Bus that used to ply the Tanjung Bungah and Teluk Bahang routes.
FROM 1999 until 2014 the bus companies were
fragmented and disorganised, eventually facing financial difficulties leading to their closure.
IT opened its doors with the first exhibition Art is Rubbish is Art in 2014 and this set the depot on a creative path.
According to Tan Shih Thoe, who was appointed by the three families to take charge and manage the whole place, they did not have any concrete plans on what they wanted to do with the rest of the space after part of it became an art exhibition gallery. “It grew organically over the years and we find ourselves a hub for the arts and crafts, food and urban farms,”he said. The owners have since expanded the space by acquiring shophouses next to the depot. Today, Hin Bus Depot spreads out over 60,000 sq feet and includes eight shophouses on Jalan Gurd- wara.

the depot was built to house and maintain Hin Company Ltd’s blue motorbuses. The blue motorbuses were an integral part of the colonial government’s efforts to restore George Town in the aftermath of World War II.

YEAR 2 SEMESTER 1
FIELD STUDY
PROJECT RATIONAL
BACKGROUND
The design project will explore various design methodologies and approaches to problem solving through research, observation, experimentation, critical analysis, and documentation.
Students will be looking at lightweight construction method and embracing impermanence. It will be taking into consideration the mobility, transformability and adaptability, which allow the‘pop-up furniture’ to be repositioned in student’s ‘Concept Store’ space in the future. Students will draw inspiration from many artistic outputs to ensure that the design encapsulates the essence of the site context/ cultural & historical background, as well as your artist, whilst providing a quality experience for the visitors. The ‘pop-up furniture’ should carry aesthetic, functional, social and, importantly synaesthetic quality.

Students will also work individually to explore the MATERIALITY X TEXTURE of the site, which will propose a ‘material palette’ to reflect the site essence. This ‘material prototype’ will then be applied to a ‘pop-up furniture’ we design, that works as street furniture during creative events held in student’s site. Group analysis can be assist during the design decisions making process for the ‘pop-up furniture’, as well as its placement in the site.
CLIENT INFOMATION CHILDREN + TOURIST + HANDCRAFT LOVER + FAMILY
KIWE sells many handmade products
ranging from frame arts, clay crafts to other decorative accessories and stationeries. Some of their products including bags and frame arts are shown. The displayed methods for the shop included display board, tabletop mannequins, shelving as well as hanging. The targeted customers for their store are mainly families with children, tourists and handcraft lovers as these customers will be attracted to these exquisite products. They also have a private working studio behind the store for production.

INSPIRATION MONTAGE
The idea inspiration for the pop-up structure, I got it from the shape and design of the metal gate
that keeps the stores safe and secure. I was also inspired when I learned about the history of this place. The site was originally old and worn out. After it was renovated, these stores served as attractions to bring in more crowd and economic activities to the place that was once forgotten. The design of the structure was inspired by the reopening of this antiquated cultural heritage.
MALAYSIAN INSTITUTE OF ART X BIRMINGHAM CITY UNIVERSITY
vironment made me feel connected to the site and thus urging me to use these local materials for the pop-up structure. The materials that are used in the site included timber, pattern tiles and bricks wall. Using these materials, I wish to fabricate the natural assimilation of the pop-up structure to the site itself.
MATERIAL INSPIRATION

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
IT all started with the photo of the main gate of the site, which then reminded me of the common old metal gates I see in my areas. Then I drew out the shape of the gate in various dimensions and size. Then I noticed some shapes and negative spaces of the structure and hence I have added some 3D elements to the sketch. As I think along 3D modeling, I started bending the structure and hence came up with a shell-like structure which I was very fond of. Then, I created a 3D model of the structure and eventually the whole pop-up structure. During the whole design development, I took into consideration of the structure would be built like a tree house with an elevated platform as well as the product display, spacing, safety and accessibility.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
I have added the shell-like roof of the structure with some unique retractable drop-down mechanics. The details of the retractable mechanics are shown in the slide. The floor of the pop-up structure is based
on a dodecagon star design. This floor design was based of the whole pop-up structure as it makes a 12-sided shape when its built. If observed closely, there is a shape that resembles the sun inside the dodecagon star design. It represents hope and welcoming warmth of the site, allowing for continual prosperity. As for the structure design, it is form by the repeated pattern of a rhombus and knitted into a shell-like structure. The whole structure looks retractable and allows for additional natural lighting into the structure. The top view of the pull-down structure is also shown in the slide. When the pull-down structure is activated, more natural lighting is allowed into the interior of the structure and vice versa.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
From the diagram, I have learned the pull-down mechanic is intricate with many support compo-
nents, metal pieces, and swing-down hinges. Springs are also added into the components as they help to make the retraction as silent and seamless as possible.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
I have learned about the necessary mechanics for supporting the platform and the different
components needed. What I have found was that the beam would be supported by a brace at a 45-degree angle. Different components like 8 galvanized rafter ties, bower points, beat brackets, flat brackets and others are needed for building the entire structure.
