The origin of Hin Bus Depot goes back to 1947, when the depot was built to house and maintain Hin Company Ltd’s blue motorbuses. The blue motorbuses were an integral part of the colonial government’s efforts to restore George Town in the aftermath of World War II.

LOCATION 2014 - PRESENT
It opened its doors with the first exhibition Art is Rubbish is Art in 2014 and this set the depot on a creative path. According to Tan Shih Thoe, who was appointed by the three families to take charge and manage the whole place, they did not have any concrete plans on what they wanted to do
with the rest of the space after part of it became an art exhibition gallery.

MATERIAL S TUDIES
MATERIAL PALETTE 1 During the visit at Hin Bus Depot, I have realised that they are using tons of panels, such as: polycarbonate, rusty metal sheets, plywood Vertically installed, etc. So i decided to create a material palette using all the material that i captured by phone and arrange in a axonometric view. I wanted to show that the side are full of panelling. And they are trying to remain the old structure to keep the beauty of the ‘heritage’. I used playwood for the base is because the site is rough in texture so i want it to be rough too.

MATERIAL S TUDIES TWO
MATERIAL PALETTE 2 Later on, I narrowed down all the building elements on the Hin Bus Depot and i focus on the panelling and the rough Textures. I studied how the use the rustic metal sheets and polycarbonate to cover the
Au Jardin Restaurant “My Project one Client” and the interior can be so fined and elegant. I wanted to do something similiar too.

POP UP S TRUCTURE
CONCEPT DIAGRAM CONCEPT STATEMENT Minimal and Elegant are paired with the word ‘Minima-Legant’. The Pop-up structure is designed for customers to experience outdoor dining with an atmosphere surrounded by the heritage. To againts the rustic construction materials on the surroundings, I applied the ‘Beauty of Joints’ Timber construction method & ‘Fined cut’ Plexiglass to carry out CONTRAST.

MODEL MAKING
Version 3
Version 3: After few tries and i minimised the
application of polycarbonate and primary colours. the outcome are getting to something i
want to achieve and the form of the structure is getting neat and minimalist and elegant.
Version 1
Version 1: Base on the fragile understanding
of the site i tried to create the model in my mind.
Sadly the outcome did not perform well. At first i use steel wire as the supporting structure and
&primary colours that i picked from the surroundings. materials
Version 4
Version 4: At last i change the colour usage and focus on the minima-Legant concept. I add in more detailed installations and neat colour selections to achieve my idea.
Version 2
Version 2: I tried to apply the existing material that i found at the hin bus depot. First, my intention is to use primary colour to arrange it because it is also the colour i found at the surroundings. Unfortunately, the outcome did not look that elegant, because of the colour looks cheap, so i tried to create another one which is transparent and i found that if
i use any materials on the site will not bring out the elegant that i want.

PLAN AND FUNCTION
Magnetic conveyor belt: Base on my research, the latest conveyor belt system is magnetic. It will hide the belt and have a very elegant appearence that’s the reason i go for it. and since it is out door, i would need conveyor belt to make the dining more fun and mysterious.
Nasi Lemak Sushi: A cuisine combining both japanese and malaysian. The reason why i chose nasi lemak sushi as the main dish is because the portion is just right for a fine dining, second is my pop up structure is surrounded by vary of japanese workshops and restaurant. The idea is came from here. In additionally, Japanese Zen style is also design element im studying for this concept.
