T

he Excellence in Construction (EIC) Awards program is designed to publicly recognize the quality and innovation of merit shop construction, and to promote ABC Western Michigan’s (ABC/WMC) belief that a construction project where the choice of contractor and subcontractor based on price, ability, and performance produces the highest quality and most cost-effective project. By focusing on the highest quality and innovation in merit shop construction, ABC/WMC calls attention to those outstanding projects and continues to raise standards throughout the construction industry. The EIC Awards also raise public awareness of the exceptional work our members perform as we directly impact the structure, design, and look of our communities where we live, work, and play. As our industry has had consistent, robust growth, members have experienced challenges to meet schedules. Our future depends on growing and developing talent. We are steadfast in working to increase the awareness of the rewarding career paths and opportunities in the commercial construction industry. The Board of Directors and staff of ABC/WMC are working on creative solutions to assist with talent attraction and development. In addition to the 85 outstanding project entries this year, ABC Western Michigan will present two Safety Awards of Excellence to one trade contractor and one general contractor. The Safety Award of Excellence is sought after year over year and is difficult to win. ABC/WMC includes member surveys of safety performance, job site visits, peer review, and interviews with the entrants’ senior leadership teams. Winners in these two categories will be announced live at the Excellence in Construction Awards. Safety is one of the highest priorities of ABC/WMC member companies and we’re delighted to recognize the people, programs, and performance that keep our members safe.

2019 is the fifth year that ABC/WMC has recognized our remarkable tradespeople through the Craft Professional of the Year award. Craft professionals are the lifeblood of the construction industry, and we need to continue to recognize the accomplishments of the men and women who work in the field and make it happen every day. My sincere thanks to the many industry leaders who serve on the Excellence in Construction committee, who judge the project entries, who evaluate the Safety Award of Excellence applicants, and who select the Craft Professional of the Year. I am humbled by the service of our 60+ volunteers who work year-round to make the Excellence in Construction Awards happen. I hope to see you at our event on Thursday, September 19, in downtown Grand Rapids, at 20 Monroe Live. Please help us recognize and celebrate the people, projects, and safety performance that make the West Michigan commercial construction industry the best of the best.

Scope included: an 8,000 SF kitchen addition, a 13,300 SF Covenant Learning Center addition, a state-of-the-art Tram Building located in the center of the occupied facilities, and extensive improvements to the amphitheater.

This project, completed by VanLaan Concrete Construction, included the restoration and replacement of structural concrete at the South Harbor Pier in Grand Haven State Park. All materials, such as formwork, rebar, and ready-mixed concrete, were transported through the harbor via barge and placed with a bucket and crane.
