ith 300 days of sunshine each year and a mild subtropical climate, situated equidistant from Africa and Europe and with excellent flight connections from all over Europe, the 3640 square kilometres that we call Mallorca has, throughout its history, been visited by many different civilizations, attracted to the island by its wealth of possibilities.

Mallorca has often been described as a mini-continent, where we can find all the different landscapes one can imagine: from the wide open beaches of Palma to the cliffs of the north coast, the romantic rocky bays dotted around the coastline and the sand dunes in the south. In the interior of the island, there are Mediterranean pine forests, with bushes and all kinds of aromatic herbs, alternating with fields that have been carefully cultivated over thousands of years and the Tramontana mountains, where one can breathe the purest air in unspoilt natural surroundings. Renowned since the tourist boom of the 50’s as a summer holiday 4

resort for millions of tourists, nevertheless, a large part of Mallorca’s most precious treasures remain, as yet, undiscovered by the majority of visitors. Most tourists visit the island in summer, when they can enjoy the sun and the island’s magnificent beaches, but it is from March to May and from September to December when Mallorca offers its Spring and its so-called “Winter Spring”, a mild climate with average temperatures of 20ºC, making these months the most pleasant ones for enjoying the island’s innumerable charms. The great natural highlight of the season is in March, when almost seven million almond trees are covered in white and pale pink blossom, creating incredibly beautiful landscapes. Greeks, Romans, Phoenicians, Vandals, Arabs, Aragonese, Catalonians and Castilians have all occupied the island in the past and left their marks, which can be seen in the archaeological sites from the Bronze Age (burial and/or defence mounds, dating back more than 3000 years), Arab remains, such as the Arabian baths in Palma,

Roman cities, such as Pollentia and Gothic treasures such as the Cathedral and La Lonja area in Palma. These traits are also present in the carefully preserved Mediterranean architecture of the possessións ( great country manor houses), and the picturesque villages in the interior of the island. An interesting variety of nautical activities are available on the island, with 33 marinas and charter services for all kinds of boats, both motor and sailboats. Seen from the sea, Mallorca is a breathtaking sight well worth discovering. Golf is another sport which can be played almost anywhere on the island, thanks to its 24 magnificent and carefully tended golf courses, fully integrated into their own natural surroundings. The great expanse of varied and unspoilt countryside on the island is perfect for enjoying other sports such as rambling, nordic walking, climbing and abseiling, cycling, wind and kite surfing, canoeing, snorkelling and many others.

Mallorca’s deep-rooted ancestral traditions are manifested in the numerous fiestas and popular celebrations of great anthropological and entertainment interest. Easter week, with its processions, is one of the most famous celebrations in Mallorca, the most important ones being in Palma and Artá, amongst others. There are also various medieval markets and all kinds of concerts, theatre plays and other events held throughout the year, making Mallorca an exciting hive of cultural activity. ow could we describe the current situation regarding tourism in general so far this year? What is the outlook for the rest of the year and for 2012? I would say that we can continue to expect high occupancies during the high season but at reduced prices, which will mean lower profitability. This tendency will continue and could also influence tourism in North Africa and Greece.

As far as meetings are concerned, we should continue to prepare and equip the “hardware” (hotels, meeting rooms, infrastructure, destination, etc.), as well as the “software”, (staff, customer services, etc.). A key point to be taken into consideration for meetings tourism is the accessibility of the destination and certainly Majorca is easier and cheaper to get to than other European capital cities. This aspect has not really been fully exploited until now as far as quality and communication are concerned. With regard to golf tourism, this has proved to be a great activity for seasonal adjustment, although there is still a long way to go to make the most of it and specific promotion is essential.

Air Berlin has been trying to promote seasonal adjustment for years, yet this year you have had to reduce flights during mid and low seasons due to the current economical crisis. MICE and Golf: two products that are essential for maintaining high occupancy throughout the year. What is Air Berlin doing to promote these tourist segments? We have had the utmost confidence in this destination since our first flights here on the 30th April 1979 and this has been proved by the increasing the number of passengers, which has now reached a figure of between 7 and 8 million in 2011. In contrast to other airlines, we have continued to place our trust in the Balearic Islands, maintaining a large number of flights during the winter months. In your view, what are the tendencies for meetings and golf tourism? 8

Which are our nearest competitors within the MICE and golf market? As far as MICE is concerned, the main competition derives from the same countries that the MICE companies themselves come from. The rise in teleconferences also has a negative impact. Our main competitors in the Golf segment are the Costa del Sol, Algarve and Turkey.

From the 26th to the 28th October, MICE Mallorca is organising, for the third consecutive year, a workshop which will be attended by around 40 organisers of international events who are interested in getting to know, or discovering Majorca, and local companies specialising in MICE. How important do you think this kind of event is? I believe that, with Majorca’s excellent location, we should work even harder to improve the quality of services, in order to fulfil the expectations of the MICE market, such as meeting room facilities, specialist organisation, etc. and thereby enable the Island to compete with other markets.

A entity or organisation in possession of a certificate which complies with an ISO ruling, is recognised all over the world as a company that complies with standard requirements of quality, environment, etc. depending upon which management system it uses. AENOR is a Spanish member of IQnet, the most important international network of certification of quality and environmental management systems, made up from organisations from 30 countries. Therefore, as well as its Registered Company and Environmental Management certificates, AENOR also issues IQnet certificates. An ever more increasing element of AENOR is its international scope, representing Spain in rulings governing international and

regional organisations, as well as through joint-venture projects. As far as certification is concerned, AENOR supports Spanish companies in their internationalisation and helps organisations in more than 60 countries to improve their levels of quality. The efficient use of energy and renewable sources of energy not only affect the profit and loss accounts of tourist companies, but also have a positive effect on the environment. ÂżWhat tools does AENOR have to guarantee these results? AENOR offers a wide range of certificates, validations and environmental verifications, which permit companies to prove their commitment to the protection of the environment, minimising impact and encouraging a better use of resources. The certificates issued by AENOR help to ensure that this kind of commitment also becomes an important factor in competitiveness.

As well as the UNE-EN-ISO 14001:2004, certificate for Environmental Energy Management, the UNE-ISO 50001 ruling sets out the requirements that an Energy Management System should have, in order to carry out continual and systematic improvements in the use of energy in organisations. The Energy Audit Valuation established in the UNE 216501:2009 ruling is the third part in ensuring that the energyaudit has been carried out, thereby complying with the requisites established in the same and, consequently, inspiring confidence in its results.

However, there are upcoming destinations that are becoming very competitive, with a product that is the same or better as far as quality is concerned and with very competitive prices as well. Therefore, we should take advantage of this resurgence which has come about as a result of the present social-economic situation of our closest competitors to reinforce our destination, working together in all aspects to build a stronger Balearic destination in terms of quality, safety, innovation, sustainability and attractiveness.

What should those of us who are working hard to contribute in the mid-term to the achievement of the longed-for seasonal adjustment in tourism not forget? EIn the first instance, we should try to inspire loyalty from the tourists who visit us by being good hosts, encouraging them to

become enamoured of our great cultural, natural, artistic and gastronomic heritage. Also we should look after our environment and patrimony in a sustainable and accessible way so that future generations can enjoy the beauty of our islands. We should also seek to branch out into new markets, conventions, social tourism, etc. by being creative, innovative and accessible. Also, this type of event is a generator of knowledge, ideas, dreams, in order to achieve, between all of us, a more attractive Balearic tourist destination. Meetings tourism (congresses, workshops, incentive trips, conferences, seminars, forums, courses, etc.) comprises a segment that represents an adequate seasonal component for the Balearic Islands, due to their good infrastructures, installations, tourist offer and connections by air, as well as the high spending capacity of this kind of tourist for the Islands. Due to the peculiarities, demands and requirements of meetings tourists, the MICE product is considered by many to be the most attractive in the tourist sector. Nevertheless, the conventional sources of commercialisation are different and belong to a very specialised sector. To be able to gain a position in this market and promote one’s product, it is necessary to infiltrate very carefully and this requires a definite, specialised strategy. In order to successfully promote a destination in Europe, it is essential to determine exactly to whom we wish to direct our message. In MICE Media, we divide our potential clients into three main groups, which form part of our own database of more than 5000 companies: * Consortiums: These are groups such as American Express, Carlson Wagon Lits, Lufthansa Citycenter (LCC) and others, which have traditionally dominated contracting for large corporate events, congresses and conventions through their various delegates in the main European countries. Finding and contracting them is, in the first instance, easily accessible and transparent, 12

as they are important organisations, but it is much more difficult to contact directly the persons responsible for contracting in the different areas. * Implants: These are of exceptional strategic importance. Implants function as internal travel agencies within large corporations and companies and they decide the destinations for ALL corporate travel i.e. all the company’s or corporation’s meetings, incentives, congresses, etc and it requires continual work on a long-term basis to find them, get to know them and establish a professional and personal relationship with the key contacts. * Independent Organisers: In contrast to traditional tour operators, there are many cases in the MICE segment where small and medium event organising companies have clients who are very important on an international level. Brands such as Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Bayer, Pfitzer, Sony Ericsson or Vodafone are examples of how some companies entrust the organisation and contracting of their business trips to small, specialist organisations, which offer a very personalised service, tailor-made to the specific requirements of their VIP clients. * International Golf Tour operators, a segment closely related to MICE, as practising this sport represents the perfect complement to any corporate event. To gain access to all of these in the most effective way, MICE Media has developed a promotion strategy, which currently includes the following actions that have already been put into practice in Majorca and Ibiza.

It includes more information than the printed guide and is available in two languages: Spanish and English. It provides all meeting planners with updated information on news of the destinations through periodical newsletters, thereby generating continual informative hits. Furthermore, the portal provides more detailed information concerning MICE MEDIA clients and generates interactivity between supply and demand, establishing connections with the web sites of all the companies which advertise in it.

MICE MEDIA WORKSHOPS For the past three years, MICE Media has held one2one Workshops, providing the ideal setting for getting to know companies from different countries, who bring, or are planning to bring groups to Majorca and Ibiza.

INTERNATONAL TRADE FAIRS AND ROADSHOWS MICE Media clients are represented with our own stand in three top trade fairs, two of which are in the MICE segment and the other in the Golf segment: EIBTM Barcelona, IGTM Turkey and IMEX Frankfurt. Personalised contacts and meetings are established in these trade fairs at a rate of more

than 40 companies per trade fair, all of which are interested in the destination. A database and list of petitions are sent to our clients in a report which contains the preferences of the companies contacted and contact details of the same. In the same way as with the trade fairs, our clients receive a report on the companies contacted, together with their requirements. OUTSOURCING MICE Media offers its outsourcing services to Convention Bureaus and other institutions responsible for tourist destinations, who need to outsource the promotion of the same in the MICE segment, designing and implanting an action plan which will promote the destination in a favourable way against the competition, always in accordance with their budget and requirements. This action plan will include the organisation of famtrips, press trips, workshops and the design and distribution of guides and web portals, as well as representation of the destinations in the sectorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main international trade fairs.

This event aims to set up personalised meetings lasting 15 minutes, between specialist MICE buyers, who have been invited from various European countries, and vendors of installations and establishments in Majorca who are our clients, in order to establish direct lines of collaboration and contracting. In order to do so, MICE MEDIA has personally chosen and invited various companies specialising in the organisation of events from Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, France, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, the UK, Russia and Sweden, amongst other countries. The island’s landscape is marked with bays, beaches and cliffs on the coast, whilst the interior is characterised by typical Mallorcan villages and mountains reaching heights of 1.500 meters. A wealth of beautiful scenery and culture with 383.107 inhabitants, invites visitors to explore every inch of the island and to discover the island’s gastronomy.

Apart from the being a typical Sun and Sand destination, Palma has many other facets. Culturally, it has a wealth of art galleries and museums, such as the Pilar Miró Foundation, the Joan March Foundation, the Bartomeu March Foundation, the Barceló Foundation, the Casal Solleric, the La Caixa Foundation in the Gran Hotel and the Es Baluard Museum of Contemporary Art, amongst others. Palma is also known for its fiestas. One of the most popular is San Sebastian, which is held on the 20th January. San Sebastian is the city’s patron saint and bonfires (Foguerons) are traditionally lit in all the streets of the city centre to toast bread and sausages.

In times gone by, the island was coveted by Romans, Arabs and pirates. It was the Catalonian monarch, James I, who ended the Mediterranean island’s Muslim rule in the 13th century and to whom we owe Palma’s most important buildings. The old quarter was built behind the ancient city walls, which repelled pirates and corsairs, and set in the bay which is named after the city. Ancient churches, palaces and mansions depict a past marked by prosperity. Opposite the Cathedral is the Almudena Palace, which was previously an Arabian palace and residence of the Mallorcan monarchs but has now been converted into a museum. Following the path of the Passeig Sagrera, we arrive at the Es Baluard museum of modern art, with a collection of works featuring the most significant international tendencies from the end of the 19th century to modern day. This centre also exhibits the works of artists such as Cézanne, Gauguin, Picasso, Tàpies, Kiefer and Barceló, amongst others. Crossing the Plaza Major, we walk through the old quarter, visiting the Plaça de Cort, the Council Offices, the Palau Vivot and the church of Santa Eulalia. The baroque structure of the town hall, commonly known as Cort, was previously a 16th century hospital. Two kilometres from the centre of Palma, we come to Bellver Castle, situated on a tree-covered hill overlooking the bay. Its name comes from the old Catalonian words bell veer, meaning

Palma has become a true shopping centre. Having recovered the architectural style of C’an Marcel, the rooms have been transformed to create an ambience reminiscent of the splendour of the Baroque era in which this house was originally designed - a special celebration to which we are all invited, as well as the opportunity to visit a house built in the characteristic Majorcan style.

ABACO is situated in the Lonja area of Palma’s old town. Its name comes from the enormous abacuses of the pillars in the entrance hall, where in the olden days horses and carriages used to pass through. The patio in the entrance is completely covered, except for a small rectangle at the side. The other side of the patio opens out onto the garden, of which only a small part remains. A spectacular staircase rises from the entrance hall up to the house itself, as the ground floor was only used for dismounting. In the patio, or entrance hall, there is a bar with a rectangular counter, tables and chairs covered with XVII century Majorcan style cloth, and old paintings. There are also some modern surrealist paintings, which provide the only contemporary touch here, yet they do not spoil the overall effect, as their colour, theme and trompe l’oeil technique give the sensation of having been there always, as if forming part of the structure. There is a huge chimney in the patio, as well as sculptures, ceramic dishes, religious articles, etc., all illuminated with a multitude of candles and adorned with fantastic fresh flower arrangements. On the top floor of the house, there are a further two rooms decorated in the same style, with large paintings – some of which are old copies of Italian masters – sculptures and comfortable armchairs where clients can sit and enjoy their drinks in an ambience steeped in Mediterranean culture: its colours, climate, music - everything that could come from Rome, Florence, etc. The magnificent kitchen, which has been fully restored, is also open to visitors and is full of local ceramics and copper pots and pans and there are two impressive Rococo cornucopias on the main staircase. Salvador Palao Baños, who created and decorated Abaco, searched for all these items in antique shops all over Spain. 56

The rooms in ABACO are furnished with antiques, blending in perfectly with the style of the mansion and surrounded by matching ceramics, cloths, bronzes, carpets and a unique compilation of paintings, etchings and sculptures, all combining to create an attractive collection, constantly revived with fresh flowers, fruit and plants, thereby creating a bucolic and lyrical ambience, which differentiates it from a typical museum. Walking through the doors of ABACO, we are transported into another era. It is hard to decide whether you are on the set of a Visconti film, or whether you have entered a time machine, or if it is all a dream, but reality quickly sets in. Both the Majorcans themselves, as well as the island’s many visitors, enjoy visiting ABACO, because it is like stepping back into another age, full of memories of when everything was natural and authentic, and all accompanied by classical music which creates an ambience reminiscent of the scene of a magnificent opera..

Miquel Oliver wines have received various national and international awards over the years for their excellent work in their vineyards and their hundred-year old Majorca bodega. For almost 100 years, the Majorcan village of Petra has been home to a well-known bodega: Miquel Oliver, a place that should definitely be included in the itinerary of those wishing to gain inside knowledge of the island’s oenology and who enjoy tasting wines that are receiving innumerable awards, as well as brilliant recommendations. This pioneering bodega was the first on the island to introduce important technological changes and improvements. We talk to Pilar Oliver, oenologist and fourth generation in the family saga: How do you work your vineyards? Although the natural conditions are certainly privileged, we work hard on a daily basis to improve them, in order to obtain the best grapes and those which will give body and flavour to each one of our wines. This work is carried out in conjunction with nature itself and climatic conditions participate in a natural, active way - we take care of the rest…

Our conveyance system also requires team work in conjunction with nature. We use a mobile espalier, which enables us to make the most of the hours of sunlight that we have in Majorca and control the humidity of the leaves and bunches of grapes. In this way, we can optimise the microclimate of the plant’s interior and considerably reduce treatment for plant protection. And this is how our twelve hectares of land and our daily work enable us to obtain our own aromas and characteristics, which not only identify each one of our wines but also identify our company: Vinyes i

What rules do you follow when producing your wines? There is a history behind each of our wines. Some have been inherited from past generations and others are the result of our efforts to innovate and experiment. Although they all have their own personality, with their individual aromas and characteristics, they also have one thing in common: the quality and passion which goes into their production. Our efforts to continually evolve have enabled us to combine the traditional values of a family cellar with an open attitude and a curious mind. And also with enthusiasm. The result of all this is the production of new wines of an excellent quality and great personality - unique wines that have been capable of making their mark amongst the great names and which are guaranteed by the Designation of Origin of the Pla i Llevant de Mallorca. As well as receiving recognition from our clients, which is what encourages us to continue to work and experiment, our efforts have also been awarded prizes and quality recommendations, which are always heartening for us.

I consider that the aromas of the earth, the island’s microclimate and the production and growth of the wine have to be more noticeable than the characteristics of the Merlot grapes themselves. In my opinion, the most important aspect of this wine is that when people taste it, they do not notice at first that it is another variety of Merlot but that they love the wine and enjoy it, while not knowing what they are sampling. We also take great care of our image. In this respect, the label has its own history. My mother was a teacher and we wanted to have her name written by one of her youngest pupils who wasn’t yet able to write properly. This is why people often come to the bodega asking for this wine but pronouncing the name somewhat differently to Aía. OUR WINES: original muscat miquel oliver alegria

Aía is my mother’s name and, as you can imagine, a wine which is named after your mother wouldn’t be just any wine, it has to be the best.

Aía is a wine in which the work in the vineyards and the bodega has played an important part. When you are dealing with such an international variety as the Merlot, you can’t make just another Merlot.

Perhaps the way in which we work is not the simplest but it is the one that most respects nature and that is why we do not use herbicides. Instead, we use manual labour as well as machinery in the whole process of bud-bursting, leaf-pruning and elimination of any excess weight that the vine may have to bear. This is a job that requires time and increases costs but, in return, it protects the environment and helps to improve the quality of the grapes.

In 1985 Miquel Gelabert founded the winery named after him and known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Vins Miquel Gelabertâ&#x20AC;?. It was established to research and improve the growing of the vineyards in order to produce the best quality wine. Miquel combines the art and traditional techniques from the old winemakers with modern technology in order to make the most and the best from his grapes to offer wines with personality and unique character.

The winery is made of 10 small farm lands with 9 hectares of vineyard. They are situated on the island of Mallorca with the majority in the region of Manacor and the remainder in Felanitx and Petra. All of the land has been registered with the local regulatory council of the area known as D. O. Pla i Llevant de Mallorca. The grapes used for the whole production are grown in these lands. None of the grapes are bought externally from third parties, allowing the winery to be in complete control of the whole process from the cultivation to the harvest.

In the oldest vineyards (from 4 to 65 years), the grapes are collected on the basis of their maturity which means that The use of temperature and the condition of the grape guarantee a

production that respects the peculiarities of each variety. The fermentation of the wines is made without the help of selected yeasts so it is solely the grape that will define the character of the wine. The ageing of the wine is made in barrels of 225 litres made of 80% French oak, 10% American oak and 10% oak from Caucasus. The barrels are renewed o 30 to 40% every year, except in case of the wine vine which ageing is done in new barrels every year. The ageing of the red wines and the ageing in bottle is done in a subterranean cellar dated from 1909 where the silent and the tranquillity together with the perfect temperature and humidity conditions make it an ideal place for the ageing and the preservation of the wine.
