ith 300 days of sunshine each year and a mild subtropical climate, situated equidistant from Africa and Europe and with excellent flight connections from all over Europe, the 3640 square kilometres that we call Mallorca has, throughout its history, been visited by many different civilizations, attracted to the island by its wealth of possibilities.

Mallorca has often been described as a mini-continent, where we can find all the different landscapes one can imagine: from the wide open beaches of Palma to the cliffs of the north coast, the romantic rocky bays dotted around the coastline and the sand dunes in the south. In the interior of the island, there are Mediterranean pine forests, with bushes and all kinds of aromatic herbs, alternating with fields that have been carefully cultivated over thousands of years and the Tramontana mountains, where one can breathe the purest air in unspoilt natural surroundings. Renowned since the tourist boom of the 50’s as a summer holiday 6

resort for millions of tourists, nevertheless, a large part of Mallorca’s most precious treasures remain, as yet, undiscovered by the majority of visitors. Most tourists visit the island in summer, when they can enjoy the sun and the island’s magnificent beaches, but it is from March to May and from September to December when Mallorca offers its Spring and its so-called “Winter Spring”, a mild climate with average temperatures of 20ºC, making these months the most pleasant ones for enjoying the island’s innumerable charms. The great natural highlight of the season is in March, when almost seven million almond trees are covered in white and pale pink blossom, creating incredibly beautiful landscapes. Greeks, Romans, Phoenicians, Vandals, Arabs, Aragonese, Catalonians and Castilians have all occupied the island in the past and left their marks, which can be seen in the archaeological sites from the Bronze Age (burial and/or defence mounds, dating back more than 3000 years), Arab remains, such as the Arabian baths in Palma,

Roman cities, such as Pollentia and Gothic treasures such as the Cathedral and La Lonja area in Palma. These traits are also present in the carefully preserved Mediterranean architecture of the possessións ( great country manor houses), and the picturesque villages in the interior of the island. An interesting variety of nautical activities are available on the island, with 33 marinas and charter services for all kinds of boats, both motor and sailboats. Seen from the sea, Mallorca is a breathtaking sight well worth discovering. Golf is another sport which can be played almost anywhere on the island, thanks to its 24 magnificent and carefully tended golf courses, fully integrated into their own natural surroundings. The great expanse of varied and unspoilt countryside on the island is perfect for enjoying other sports such as rambling, nordic walking, climbing and abseiling, cycling, wind and kite surfing, canoeing, snorkelling and many others.

Easter week, with its processions, is one of the most famous celebrations in Mallorca, the most important ones being in Palma and Artá, amongst others. There are also various medieval markets and all kinds of concerts, theatre plays and other events held throughout the year, making Mallorca an exciting hive of cultural activity. Furthermore, we must not forget the island’s extremely varied gastronomy, with locally produced sobrasada (spicy sausage), ensaimada, (a sweet pastry) wines, olive oil, sweets, honey, cheeses and many more delicacies, as well as numerous restaurants serving all kinds of different cuisines, especially Mediterranean and international.

And after a good dinner, there is nothing better than enjoying a drink at one of Mallorca’s many varied clubs, terraces or bars - the perfect end to a hard day’s work, relaxing in elegant, sophisticated or lively surroundings.

MICE Mallorca: Do you think that the traditional “sun and beach” style holiday in Majorca has now reached its peak? Raúl Gonzalez: In its current situation, yes. I think that there are enough city and resort hotels in Majorca. What we need now, especially taking into consideration the large number of new destinations that have appeared in the Mediterranean and which are our main competitors – Turkey, Egypt, or Croatia, amongst others – is to upgrade the quality of our offer; not only the hotels, which have improved considerably over the past few years, thanks to the renovations that have been carried out by many companies such as Barceló Hotels & Resorts, but also the additional services which, compared with these other destinations, tend to be of an inferior quality, yet at the same time, more expensive. Both the product and the market need to be repositioned. MM: Is Majorca’s potential being correctly promoted, or should the perception that the market has of the island in general be changed? RG: As far as the product is concerned, this should be improved in order to make it as competitive as possible, offering excellent value for money. However, what really needs to be developed is seasonal adjustment, as this is still a problem in most of the Spanish holiday destinations. In order to achieve this, we should create activities which will attract clients during the winter months, thereby enabling the resorts to stay open all year round. There are many segments that could be developed further in this respect: from sports tourism, such as cycling in our Hotel Barceló Pueblo Park, which enables us to achieve good occupancies during the low season, with professional and amateur cyclists from all over Europe, to cultural tourism and senior citizens, as well as congresses, conventions and incentive groups, of course.

Is it also necessary to continue to establish new feeder markets, both in Eastern Europe and in other large countries such as China and the United States, amongst others. This will make us less dependent and, therefore, less vulnerable with regard to the traditional markets such as Germany and the UK. MM: What role can the MICE segment play within this new strategy? RG: As I mentioned before, the MICE segment could be just what Majorca needs to achieve this seasonal adjustment that we so desperately require. Although it is true that, at the moment, the business segment has been the most badly affected by the economic downtrend, and therefore, is not one of the best producers, nevertheless, it’s clear that once the national and international economy begins to recover, it will be a safe bet. In this respect, Majorca has all the necessary attributes to become an excellent destination for congresses, conventions and incentives. It has excellent hotels and probably some of the best connections between our country and Europe, as well as a wide variety of additional services and leisure activities. MM: One of the things that most surprised us when carrying out a study of the market prior to launching our Annual Guide, was what we considered to be a kind of conformist attitude from some of the hoteliers, who seemed to accept it as inevitable that they have to close their establishments during part of the year. Not only that, but there appears to be a tendency to extend the periods of closure instead of reducing them. What is your opinion of this situation? How should we proceed in this respect? RG: As far as we are concerned, we would love to keep our resort hotels open all year round. In some cases, such as

Paris, Berlin, Singapore... MM: What destinations should be considered to be Majorca’s strongest competitors within the meetings and incentives segment? RG: Other Spanish cities such as Malaga or Benidorm, which also have good connections with Europe, as well as reasonably good hotels and additional services. Also the main Mediterranean holiday destinations such as Turkey and Egypt, which are also trying to promote seasonal adjustment. MM: What should we consider to be the main MICE feeder markets? RG: The national market and, especially the European market, as they know us very well and we are well positioned in their countries. MM: What new tendencies do you see in the International MICE markets? RG: At the moment, the sector continues to be rather at a standstill, as companies remain cautious due to the uncertain future of the worldwide economy. However, as soon as this recovers, we are sure that the segment will grow again and in more or less high percentages.We will probably see a return to moderation, at least for a time, and professionals will be much more cautious when organising events, avoiding superfluous expenses and demanding, more than ever, good value for money. Also, we are noticing that there is a growing tendency towards short stays, a limited number of attendees and greater cost control. In this sense, we are seeing more and more “fixed price” contracts.

MM: Today we want to look more deeply into the professional aspect of the segment in question. In your opinion, is the MICE segment purely professional, or does it allow for other interpretations? Dr.M: Firstly, we should establish the point of view from which we are analysing the MICE market. As far as I can see, there are three criteria to take into consideration: 1.The origin of the participants, i.e. whether they belong to a company or professional body, or if they are from another source. 2.Those responsible for the organisation of the event. 3.The reason for the group’s visit.

MM: The origin of the participants would seem to be obvious: they always come from companies, don’t they? Dr.M: Well…. Not necessarily. There are MICE groups, for example, comprising sports teams, which are sometimes professional and sometimes amateurs, or even fans. There are pilgrimage groups, which can today be considered MICE, as, although they have a very different origin, their common purpose is a religious event. There are also the typical groups of football fans who travel in groups to watch their team play in a final held abroad. The groups do usually come from companies but there are also associations, federations, clubs, families, political parties, etc. etc.

MM: And what about the organisers?

Dr.M: The same applies to them. Although most MICE trips are organised by meeting planners and professional travel agents, we are seeing more and more groups travelling under the directions of an independent “organiser”. The new forms of technology, especially Internet, gives everyone access to a wealth of possibilities, which a few decades ago, we couldn’t even have dreamt about. My country cousin organises annual trips for the municipal band via Internet to other local festivals and…. Well, that’s also MICE (although the organiser is not actually a professional).

As far as the aim of the group is concerned, let me give you a simple example: a wedding is firstly an event and then becomes MICE….. and I am aware that, although there are genuine professional wedding planners, many of these events are organised by the couple themselves, or their families. Does that exclude them from being considered MICE? I don’t think so. As a rule, I would say that MICE is almost always organised by and for professionals, that the trip is usually for professional reasons but that this is not an exclusive definition and is becoming less and less so.

MM: With regard to the number of participants… what is the minimum number of people considered to be a group? Dr.M: This is defined by each particular player whenever he or she considers it appropriate. There are hotels that do not consider a group to consist of less than 30 people, yet some restaurants give this category to 5 friends who come to eat there. In any case, I would like to remind you that, contrary to what we usually think, there is no total equivalence between MICE and groups. Let me explain: Incentives can be group trips, or individual trips but they are always MICE.

MM: In other words, there is always the exception that proves the rule. Dr.M: Exactly, Indeed, contrary to what we traditionally believe, especially as far as Europe is concerned, MICE trips have a clear tendency to comprise small groups, or even individual travellers (however, we should not confuse them with holidaymakers, or FIT, nor with business travellers). This tendency is not necessarily a bad thing: a good professional knows how to make the most of smaller groups, which also give more opportunity for greater interactivity with the usual individual travellers.

MM: Summing up, is the MICE segment a strictly professional sector? Dr.M: It depends who is analysing it. On paper and as a definition, yes but it would not be correct (and even less, commercially advisable) to ignore the other opportunities and possibilities that we have mentioned. The lack of strict professionalism in some of the components of the sector doesn’t prevent it from still being a very good business!

Calvià Calvià, is situated in the west of the island of Mallorca and is the Balearic Islands’ second largest municipality as far as the population is concerned and the most important with regard to tourism, with 60.000 hotel beds. The area covers 145 km2 with 54kms of coastline, offering 5 marinas and 26 beaches, ideal for all kinds of water sports.

Calvià’s beaches are renowned as the best in the Mediterranean and have been distinguished with the Quality Coast Awards by the EEC, as well as the Q for Quality certificate for three of its beaches (Palmanova, Santa Ponça and Peguera). Every year, the beaches are awarded numerous blue flags, indicating the quality of the water and the services available. The whole municipality of Calvia is well connected by a network of roads, which make it quick and easy to get from one point to another, as well as accessing the rest of the island, Son Sant Joan airport (20 minutes by motorway) and the Port of Palma (15 minutes).

Calvià has adapted well to modern times and has become a pioneer and vanguard municipality, without renouncing its customs and traditions. The history of Calvià has, to a great extent, affected the history of Mallorca as a whole. It was here where King James I landed on the 10th September 1229 and from where he began the conquest of the island for the Kingdom of Aragon. Following the death of the monarch in 1276, his kingdom was divided up between his sons, thereby establishing the independent Kingdom of Mallorca. The first signs of population date back to the Bronze Age, and many megalithic monuments can still be found in Calvià. After establishing commercial relations with the Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians, the Romans occupied the island in 123 AC, founding the cities of Pollentia and Palma. Later on, the Vandals arrived and still later, the Arabs, who took over Mallorca in 902, leaving an indelible cultural heritage which covered three centuries. The continual attacks by the Arabs on commerce and shipping in the Mediterranean provoked the conquest of the island 12

by troops from the Kingdom of Aragon, starting out from Santa Ponça beach (Calvià). Today, Calvià is home to citizens of more than 100 nationalities.

BEACHES AND COUNTRYSIDE Rugged coasts, impressive marine life, virgin islets and beaches bathed by transparent waters. Calvià was born and bred with the sea. Its 54kms of natural coastline and an average water temperature in the summer of 25ºC make it an inviting place to enjoy the sea. Nooks and crannies such as the Mago, or Portals Vells, immense stretches of fine sand in Palma Nova, or Magaluf, coves of crystal clear water in Illetas, beaches offering the natural shelter of pine trees in Santa Ponça, or for practising water sports, such as Peguera, make Calvià the ideal choice for thousands of tourists to spend their holidays every year. The great ecological value and fishing properties, as well as the diversity of its inhabitants and communities, made Las Malgrats a place well worth protecting and led to the declaration of the Malgrats Islands and the Island of El Toro as marine reserves in May 2004, a culmination of the process initiated by the Calvià council in 1984. The waters of the Malgrats Islands, covering 100 hectares and the Island of El Toro, measuring 150 hectares, located to the west of the municipality, form a real paradise for lovers of sub-aqua diving and are home to a wealth of marine life with numerous species. Here, one can explore with an independent diving suit, or go snorkelling. Nature lovers should not miss a visit to the Finca Pública Galazó estate, which was acquired by the Calvià council in 2006. Since then, local residents, visitors and tourists can enjoy its countryside, the diversity of its flora and fauna, its architectonic and historical heritage and its mysteries and legends.

However, as well as the natural attractions to be found on the estate, the Calvià council is continually working to increase its facilities. Galatzó is one of the largest estates in the Balearic Islands and its area represents approximately 10% of the total municipality of Calvià. It is also an important meeting point for practising all kinds of sports activities from BTT, mountain races and Nordic walking, to rambling, horse-riding, or archery.

SEPTEMBER: Fiestas of King James ( Santa Ponça 1-10 ) The municipality celebrates its most important fiestas during the first 10 days of September, in which it commemorates the landing of King James I in Santa Ponça in 1229. Music, parades of Christians and Saracens and a great festive atmosphere to herald the end of summer.

JANUARY: Saint Anthony (17th) and Saint Sebastian (20th) Bonfires and barbecues, where fire and demons take centre stage.

Calvià council has made a special effort over the past few years to use sport as a way of transmitting human and cultural values, as well as health and wellbeing, always complemented by its strategic role in the promotion of tourism. In accordance with this philosophy, the council has worked hard to make Calvià an international reference for sport and the organisation of sporting events. THE THEATRE

Built in 1985 on open ground it has been continually adapted and updated to provide a distinctive and atmospheric venue. “Wow!” is the usual reaction from people as they enter the theatre and see the 12 metre high ship which is the centrepiece of the stage. Leaving the airport of Palma de Mallorca take the Via Cintura to Andratx (the total journey time is approx. 30 km). Along the route you pass the villages Bendinat, Portals Nous, Palma Nova, Santa Ponsa and Costa de la Calma. After Costa de la Calma you will go through a small tunnel after which you will see an exit indicating Paguera / La Romana, but don´t take this exit. Drive on through the second tunnel and once past it, take the second exit after the tunnel, indicated as Capdella. Then you will get to a roundabout with another signpost indicating Paguera. The island’s landscape is marked with bays, beaches and cliffs on the coast, whilst the interior is characterised by typical Mallorcan villages and mountains reaching heights of 1.500 meters. Apart from the being a typical Sun and Sand destination, Palma has many other facets. Culturally, it has a wealth of art galleries and museums, such as the Pilar Miró Foundation, the Joan March Foundation, the Bartomeu March Foundation, the Barceló Foundation, the Casal Solleric, the La Caixa Foundation in the Gran Hotel and the Es Baluard Museum of Contemporary Art, amongst others. Palma is also known for its fiestas. One of the most popular is San Sebastian, which is held on the 20th January. San Sebastian is the city’s patron saint and bonfires (Foguerons) are traditionally lit in all the streets of the city centre to toast bread and sausages.

In times gone by, the island was coveted by Romans, Arabs and pirates. It was the Catalonian monarch, James I, who ended the Mediterranean island’s Muslim rule in the 13th century and to whom we owe Palma’s most important buildings. The old quarter was built behind the ancient city walls, which repelled pirates and corsairs, and set in the bay which is named after the city. Ancient churches, palaces and mansions depict a past marked by prosperity. Opposite the Cathedral is the Almudena Palace, which was previously an Arabian palace and residence of the Mallorcan monarchs but has now been converted into a museum. Following the path of the Passeig Sagrera, we arrive at the Es Baluard museum of modern art, with a collection of works featuring the most significant international tendencies from the end of the 19th century to modern day. This centre also exhibits the works of artists such as Cézanne, Gauguin, Picasso, Tàpies, Kiefer and Barceló, amongst others. Crossing the Plaza Major, we walk through the old quarter, visiting the Plaça de Cort, the Council Offices, the Palau Vivot and the church of Santa Eulalia. The baroque structure of the town hall, commonly known as Cort, was previously a 16th century hospital. Two kilometres from the centre of Palma, we come to Bellver Castle, situated on a tree-covered hill overlooking the bay. Its name comes from the old Catalonian words bell veer, meaning

GASTRONOMY Balearic cuisine may be enjoyed at the variety of restaurants located all over the city of Palma. CULTURE The town of Muro sits upon a hill overlooking the whole eastern bay of Mallorca and is a settlement that was lost in prehistoric times.
