FIEO to put focus on Japan to realise the untapped potential and move to value added

A

ddressing the session on Trade & Business Opportunities between India and Japan, Mr S K Saraf, President, FIEO said that the current export of US$ 17.6 billion does not reflect the true potential of trade between India & Japan. He said that the untapped export potential for Japan is more than US$ 3 billion in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, gems & jewellery, marine products, rice, bovine meat, knitted t-shirts, ferro silicon, aluminium, etc. FIEO launched India-Japan Business Group, an online platform, to promote interaction between business communities of India and Japan for promoting exports, imports and investment between the two countries. FIEO also signed an MoU with Japan-India Industry Promotion Association (JIIPA), a Tokyo based NPO affiliated to Tokyo Metropolitan Government, to promote trade between India & Japan. The MoU shall pave the way for greater cooperation and interaction between the two premier institutions.

6

Dr Ajay Sahai, DG & CEO said that Indian exporters should look into value added segment of exports which account for major imports into Japan. In many of the products, the share of India is extremely low. India’s share in electric and electronic components (0.09%), machinery (0.36%), pharmaceutical (0.24%) and medical & surgical equipment (0.38%) requires massive improvement as combined imports of these products in Japan is over US$ 250 billion.

CM Marks his Presence in

Uzbekistan’s maiden International Investment Forum

G

ujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani began his maiden visit to Uzbekistan by participating in the first International Investment Forum of Andijan region, “Open Andijan.” The Chief Minister would explore opportunities of collaboration and strengthen relations with Uzbekistan during his visit. Open Andijan is a platform for building an effective dialogue between the Andijan region and the business community for investment activities, developing measures to improve the investment climate, increasing the volume of investments, and to drive economic growth in the Ferghana Valley region.

After a video screening on Andijan region, Mr. Vijay Rupani addressed the audience by speaking on the cooperative partnership between India and Uzbekistan. He said,

"

In recent times, our relationship has grown into a close strategic partnership. The visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Uzbekistan in 2015 and 2016, and visit by President of Uzbekistan Mr. Shavkat Mirziyoyev to India in 2018, and earlier this year for the Vibrant Gujarat Summit have elevated our partnership to a new high.” 7

The Chief Minister informed the audience that India and Uzbekistan are now cooperating in a wide range of areas, including political, security, defence, trade, investment, economic, energy and science & technology spheres. He also highlighted the close friendship between India and Uzbekistan’s leaders, which has helped create new opportunities and fostered a higher level of interaction and collaboration in a whole new set of areas. “This has enabled us to bring a new momentum and intensity to our bilateral ties, of course, our close cultural affinity and mutual goodwill have provided a strong foundation,” he added. Last year, on 1st October 2018, an MoU was signed between Andijan and Gujarat on establishment of mutual cooperation and partnership. Gujarat-based companies are also seeking investment opportunities in the pharmaceutical and textile sectors in Uzbekistan as the Central-Asian country offers huge potential. Elaborating the ongoing exchanges between the two regions, CM Rupani said, “Since signing partnership arrangement with the Andijan region, government of Gujarat has prioritized our relationship with this region.

A number of business delegations, including a multi-sectoral one in June 2019, have visited Andijan and other regions of Uzbekistan. I recall with fondness my meeting with Hon’ble Governor of Andijan as part of an Uzbek delegation led by President Mirziyoyev to Vibrant Gujarat in January this year. Our presence today at the Open Andijan Investment Conference is a further extension of this process of building stronger business ties that began with the participation of Uzbekistan in Vibrant Gujarat earlier this year.” Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Mr. Elyor Ganiyev said, “We have been inspired from the Vibrant Gujarat Global Business Summit to organise this summit.” Governor of Andijan Mr. Shuhratbek Abdurahmonov, Chairman of Uzbekistan Chamber of Commerce, Working President of Belarus Grodno Economic Committee, Mr. B.K Goenka- President of ASSOCHAM and a number of officials from the government of Gujarat and Uzbekistan were present during the summit.

Anti-drone

specifications to be out within a week .

Ms Usha Padhee, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, said that the government will continue with privatisation in the aviation sector and more airports will be privatised soon.

S

peaking at the 'Smart Safe Secure Skies', organised by FICCI jointly with Thales, Ms Padhee said the Indian civil aviation sector is growing at a rapid pace and is attracting a lot of investment, particularly from the private sector. "Government is, for the first time, talking about disinvestment of Air India and Pawan Hans Ltd. We have already privatised some airports and more airports are in line. Three have been awarded, few more are in line. It is a continuous trend,"she said. With just 7% penetration in a country of 1.2 billion, Ms Padhee added that about 300 million to 400 million middle class in India are still waiting to fly. "Just one ticket per passenger in a year will take India ahead of the UK, the world's third-largest civil aviation market," said Ms Padhee. "Be confident that the next two decades are 9

going to be a growth story," Ms Padhee said, adding that the sector, which faces competing demands from its different stakeholders, needs the ecosystem to work as one integrated model. Mr Maheshwar Dayal, Deputy Director General, Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), said that the pressures of growth, commercial interests of the industry and pressures of security are always at loggerheads and striking a balance has always been a difficult task for BCAS. "BCAS is about to release anti-drone specifications. The technical specifications of all the gadgets and systems at Indian airports are issued by BCAS. So, for anti-drone, we are about to release the specifications in less than a week's time," he said.

Mr Anand Stanley, Chairman, FICCI Civil Aviation Committee and President & MD, India and South Asia, Airbus, said that 'Smart Safe Secure Skies' is a global event and the decision to select India as its venue this year reflects India's importance on the global landscape.

Mr Alex Cresswell, Executive Vice President, Land & Air Systems, Thales, said that the aviation industry has been at the forefront of technology advancements and the sector's reputation (in terms of safety) is critical for its continued success.

Speaking about the India's large and growing economy, Mr Stanley said that Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has surpassed the American and European regulators in certain concepts related to safety and other areas that were followed and adopted by other countries.

"Since the start of commercial aviation, the sector is at another major juncture where it is entering the drone age. The existing infrastructure will not be adequate as the skies will be getting busier. Also, the regulatory framework of international standards will be needed to police these," added Mr Alex.

"The spirit of aerospace has always been innovation, but the soul of aviation is in its safety. No one in this industry (OEM, company or player), breaks the code of honor that we have on safety. It is this sanctity we have to present and preserve today," he said

Mr Emmanuel de Roquefeuil, VP and Country Director, Thales in India, said, "We know the Modi government has an ambition of making India a $5 trillion economy by 2024. A company like Thales is here to help meet those ambitions."

CICU President, U.S. AHUJA awarded as "Prominent Sikh" during the award ceremony. The award is for recognition of his work and contribution towards industry trade and society.

One of our initiatives will be creation on the basis of ICCA of the competence center – a marketing hub – based on the best practices and industry standards. At the same time, it is important to create a Russian version of the ICCA website so that more members including companies from Russia and the CIS countries have access to valuable expert knowledge on the meeting industry in their native language. Currently, out of 7,000 Russian companies only 22 are members of ICCA and enjoy all the benefits of working with the International Association. Therefore, one of my tasks will be to increase the number of the Russian companies – the ICCA members.

When we look at its inception in 1982, I was wondering how in the past, the handling of the association could have been accomplished – without the communication tools of today. In the course of NRAI’s history, there have been periods in which a spirit of association has been felt to be other than one of positive activity. In particular, unity in our industry was partially neglected, and am stoked that we closed that gap. This phase reminds me that one should stay being an entrepreneur and not a “drifter”. In this age of globalisation and constant need to improve the standard of living, the demand for plastic is bound to increase exponentially and turn India into the world's next plastic destination.
