In addition, some missions keep the passports for an indefinite period resulting in uncertainty & cancellations which incur a huge cost to the traveller given that confirmed air tickets & hotel vouchers are a requirement for visa applications, which must be done away with, requested Mayal. Further, she conveyed that the extension of the free visas to India and the duration to be of minimum 6 months with multiple entries must be resumed immediately. In line with that, E-Visa must be reinstated for all countries including UK & Canada as pre covid, to boost inbound tourism. Highlighting the administrative bottlenecks for which TAAI has been communicating to other concerned ministries too & are hampering the growth of the sector, Mayal said that the Air Suvidha form is an encumbrance protocol and therefore the same should be immediately scrapped & supported at the home ministry. Parallelly, mandatory health & comprehensive travel Insurance on Inbound E-Visa/Visa for the safety and security of travellers must be introduced. Mayal apprised Shri Verma that Tourism comes under a wide spectrum of ministries & therefore there is a need to work collectively to achieve progressive & effective results. Dillip Rajakarier, CEO Minor Hotels, parent company to Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas, and Group CEO Minor International, commented,

After an introduction by Juliet Price, Consultant Executive Director of beam, Michael Begley set the scene discussing “What do we define as a small meeting?” venuedirectory .com data shows that meetings for up to 30 delegates cover 82% of bookings.

Kate Scully, Global Business Travel Manager of Howdens Group shared a Corporate Buyers’ perspective in conversation with Chetan Shah of Micebook. Kate said “I would be happy to see venues listed on a booking platform, with instant access to support. This would make everything more efficient and give us hours back.”

During the Agency Panel, Richard Shacklock of Agiito observed “You can book accommodation out of office hours but you can’t book a meeting room.”

‘Outside of recruitment and rising costs there is no more important industry topic than Instant Book’

HOSPITALITY NEWS

The beam Summit was organised in partnership with headline sponsor venuedirectory. com. Michael Begley, Managing Director of venuedirectory.com explained: “Instant Book offers so many valuable benefits. There’s so much to gain by bringing together agencies, clients, suppliers and technology providers to discuss the opportunities and issues, turn them into action and move the solution forward faster.”

It proved to be a day of enthusiastic debate and energetic discussion with no shortage of questions and opinions from the audience all day.

“Outside of recruitment and rising costs there is no more important industry topic than Instant Book in the simple meetings arena.” This observation by Sian Sayward of Inntel helps to understand why almost 150 members of beam and non-members from all over the UK, were keen to come together for the beam Instant Book Summit at the Doubletree by Hilton Oxford Belfry Hotel.

Paul Casement of Clarity said: “We have to sharpen up the booking side for small meetings. Instant Book allows us to streamline and better place our resources to serve our clients – this is particularly pertinent given current resource pressures we’re all experiencing”

Judi Oliver of Silverstone commented “It’s great to get everyone in one room to discuss the various issues and the challenges around Instant Book,” while Lucy Sikora of The Savoy said “This is the perfect topic to discuss in person. We need more education around the technicalities of Instant Book in order to drive confidence and move forward.”

“So many people have said that, before today, they didn’t really appreciate what an important topic this is and that they had learnt so much.” Juliet Price

After Douglas O’Neill said that there “needs to be parity of price no matter which booking channel is used,” Julie Shorrock of HTS said “We should learn from mistakes and also take what works well in the accommodation sector in developing this.” Jacqui Kavanagh of EDGE Venues lead a panel asking ‘what does success look like in Supply, Distribution & Book’, Danny Yates summed up the views of many with one word; “Adoption.”

The technical panel moderated by Caleb Parker of Bold considered what was limiting the rate of adoption in the UK. Luis De Souza of NFS Tech said: “Many of our venue clients like to deal with all enquiries in a personal way so are reluctant to lose that. But it is changing. Venues are becoming more comfortable about releasing access to inventory.”

Rich Matthes of Amadeus who came over from the U.S. thought. “It’s been excellent, well worthwhile. I think we have started to move the issue forward.”

Michaelconcluded.Begley added “We need to come back together in about six months to review progress and keep up the momentum.”

Dan Humby of Groups 360 said; “It’s a complex issue with a lot of legacy technology to overcome and many different technologies in use.”

Costs are always a key consideration when deploying technology and the travel industry has had a history of adding cost layers to a booking and this was often a criticism of the Global Distribution System or GDS used by the travel sector. Will Helsby of venuedirectory.com confirmed that “there will be no additional charge from venuedirectory to connect a venue to Instant Book if it is already a client.”

www. Travbuzznews .com TravBuzz | 16

When Callum Mclean of Agiito called for an industry working party, many people volunteered to be on it. “A first task will be to define Small meetings sizes and / or simple meetings” Callum added.

Summing up the day, Matthew Davies of Cvent said: “Direct booking is here now. The industry is ready. Event planners want it. There are hurdles that can be overcome, not brick walls.”

TAT’S MARKETING PLAN 2023 REVITALISE THAI TOURISM TOWARDS HIGH VALUE AND SUSTAINABLE GROWTH

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has announced the marketing plan for 2023 that will continue this year’s goal to revitalise and transform Thai tourism, while placing greater emphasis on the recovery of the tourism sector towards stronger and sustainable, more responsible, more digital and more inclusive tourism growth. Hence, we have outlined our marketing strategy for next year adhering to the TAT’s Corporate Plan 2023-2027, which aims to heighten the TAT’s position as the strategic leader in driving Thailand towards experience-based and sustainable “TATtourism.iscommitted

to help revitalise and transform Thai tourism under our three strategic objectives, which are: to ‘drive demand’ for meaningful travel, to ‘shape supply’ by developing a new tourism ecosystem, and to ‘thrive for excellence’ by making the TAT a data-driven organisation. We believe this will heighten our goal for Thailand to achieve high value and sustainable tourism growth,” Mr. Yuthasak added.

TAT will continue to use the “Visit Thailand Year 20222023: Amazing New Chapters” as the communication strategies for the international market. Thailand will continue to be promoted as a world-class destination that offers something for everyone under the ‘From A-Z: Amazing Thailand Has It All’ concept. This will be showcased alongside the kingdom’s 5F, 4M soft-power foundations; namely, Food, Film, Fashion, Festival, Fight, Music, Museum, Master, and Meta.

Particularly for long-haul international market, TAT recognises 2023 as the ‘time is the new currency’ era. Therefore, emphasis will be placed on promoting Thailand as a year-round destination for health and wellness aficionados, families with kids, active seniors, and remote workers / teleworkers through co-promotions with leading brands. Strategic marketing activities will be launched in new source markets, including Saudi Arabia and the USA’s large secondary cities through partnerships with the airlines.

www. Travbuzznews .com TravBuzz | 21

TAT will also promote all points of entry into Thailand, via land, water, and air with an aim to reinstate more than 80% of the regional air seating capacity in 2019.

“For 2023, TAT expects Thailand to generate a total tourism revenue of 1.73 trillion Baht with 970 billion Baht from the international market and 760 billion Baht from the domestic market, for base case scenario, and 2.38 trillion Baht with 1.50 trillion Baht from the international market and 880 billion Baht from the domestic market, for best case scenario. This represents about 80% of Thailand’s tourism performance in 2019,” Mr. Yuthasak concluded.

In addition, more collaborative partnerships will be formed between TAT and the airlines to help boost the international tourism business by increasing the air seating capacity to Thailand. Initially, this will focus on key source markets with no travel restrictions to drive the travel demand of high-disposable income groups (Millennials, Gen-X, and Silver-Age People), hyper-personalisation groups (health and wellness, sports tourism, and responsible tourism), and new segments (digital nomads and remote workers / Forteleworkers).thedomestic market, TAT will focus on increasing the travel frequency of domestic tourists by promoting Thailand as a year-round destination under the ‘REAL’ strategy: Responsible Tourism, Extra-ordinary Experience,

Moreover, to ‘thrive for excellence’ by making TAT a data-driven organisation, TAT will use the Thailand Tourism Virtual Mart (TTVM) via https://virtualmart.tourismthailand.org as the key online B2B platform for Thai tourism business and international tourism operators.

For the short-haul international market, TAT has outlined ‘The Great Resumption’ under the ‘2Qs, 5News’ strategy. The ‘2Qs’ are ‘Quick Win’ to drive back the demands of tourists and ‘Quality’ to achieve more numbers of revisits and higher trip expenditure. The ‘5News’ include ‘New Segments’ with growth potential, ‘New Areas’ for source tourist markets, ‘New Partners’ in existing markets, ‘New Infrastructure’ relating to travel and tourism, and ‘New Way’ of travel experiences that will focus on responsible tourism.

Avantgarde Marketing and Less for more Economy. Highlights of each of the five regions of Thailand will be promoted, including nostalgic experiences in the North for Multi -Gen Families, ‘Trend C2’ innovative routes in the Central Region for Gen-Y and Gen -Z, culinary and luxury tourism offers in the East for high-income Gen-Y and Millennial Families, Dharma – Nature – Culture routes in the Northeast for Gen-Y and employed people, and inclusive responsible tourism in the South. Moreover, TAT will promote secondary cities up and down Thailand.

TAT has formulated the marketing plan for 2023 adhering to the Thai government’s Bio -Circular-Green or BCG Economy Model, which is conforming to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The BCG model is being used to revive the tourism industry with the aim of safe, inclusive, and sustainable travel.

decision to scrap TCS on sale of overseas tour packages to foreign tour operators/foreign tourists

Mr. Mehra adds further,

book overseas tour packages for neighbouring countries like Bhutan, Nepal and Maldives through Indian Tour Operators. But since there was a levy, they preferred booking the tours directly with tour operators in those countries as there was no such charge there.

IATO expresses its sincere gratitude to the Government for withdrawing completely 5 percent Tax Collection At Source (TCS) charged on sale of overseas tour packages to foreign tour operators. The same was earlier withdrawn only for individual foreign tourists but now on IATO’s representation, Govt. has announced removal of tax, both on individual foreign tourists as well as foreign tour operators (FTO’s). The removal would make the tour packages offered by Indian tour operators to foreigners a bit cheaper and would help provide some succor to the pandemic ravaged

www. Travbuzznews .com TravBuzz | 34

According to Mr. Rajiv Mehra, President IATO, “The impact of this notification is that both foreign individuals and FTOs (buyers) buying overseas tour packages from the Indian Tour Operators will be exempt from TCS provisions. It is not necessary that the foreign tourist should visit India for an onward journey to the neighbouring country. Secondly, the FTO / Corporate entity established in foreign country and not maintaining any permanent establishment / branch in India would also be exempted from TCS provisions.”

IATO hails Govt.

“Indian tour operators were losing a lot of clients because of this tax, besides the govt. was losing precious foreign exchange as the entire money was going to the other countries. We represented the Finance Ministry on this and they found merit in our plea and thereby announced the withdrawal. We express our gratitude to the Finance Ministry and Tourism Ministry for this.”

Sports blogger/ social influencer, Suhail Chandhok said, “My journey to and through Sri Lanka with SriLankan Airlines was certainly a very memorable one. At a time filled with so much uncertainty and media chatter back in India, it was amazing to experience first-hand that the spirit and warmth of Sri Lanka was still very much intact. It has been a childhood dream as a former cricketer to watch a Test Match from the top of the Galle Fort and that was just one of several incredible moments spent with the fantastic team at SriLankan Airlines. I can't wait to head back to the country and I do hope that more Indians see it as a destination given the proximity and the absolute diversity on offer for any traveller.”

Ever since the easing of travel restrictions following the global pandemic, SriLankan Airlines has steered an extensive content creator campaign #NamastefromSriLanka, in order to build advocacy and familiarity to the brand SriLankan Airlines and destination Sri Lanka. Under this programme, SriLankan has welcomed over 60 elite content creators/social influencers from India so far, and the agents’ fam tour is another extension of this SriLankaninitiative.

Mr. Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, President of Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), said:“GainingEdge’s recommendation that destinations undertake “smart” bid strategies by engaging local knowledge leaders with a strong reputation to support their bids is in line with a new initiative of TCEB called Thailand Convention Ambassador Programme. We have so far appointed Prof. Emeritus Dr. Somsri Pausawasdi (Honorary Convention Ambassador – Medical) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Djitt Laowattana (Convention Ambassador – Robotics) as Thailand’s first Convention Ambassadors. The two ambassadors have played a role in supporting Thai medical and robotics professionals to assume the positions in the governing bodies of international associations”. The roles of the Convention Ambassador are persuasive advocates for Thailand. They will help communicate the value of hosting a convention and put together intellectual resources and support necessary for local associations to win bids. The Thailand Convention Ambassador Programme will be expanded progressively to include other “Thailand 4.0” and “Bio-Circular -Green Economy Model” industries such as food, and

The Hong Kong Exhibition & Convention Industry Association (HKECIA) welcomes the decision of the HKSAR Government to reduce hotel quarantine for inbound travellers from seven to three days, followed by four days under medical surveillance at home. Reducing the number of days for hotel quarantine will help ease the burden on Hong Kong residents returning to the city and incoming international travellers.

HKECIA WELCOMES

However, inbound visitors are not allowed to attend any exhibitions held in event premises, e.g. trade fairs, exhibitions, conferences, etc, during the four days of medical surveillance. The new arrangement and the reduction of number of days for hotel quarantine thus will make no difference for the exhibition industry.

With decades of effort by the HKECIA members, Hong Kong has attained its hard-earned reputation as the Trade Fair Capital of Asia. Some 140 exhibitions were held in a ‘normal’ year at the AsiaWorld-Expo and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, drawing millions of trade buyers and exhibitors from all over the world. These high-spending business travellers generated tremendous tourism receipts for hotels, restaurants and shops, and hence created tens of thousands of jobs. The exhibition industry has been an important pillar to Hong Kong’s economy and will be a core engine for the economy rebound.

to relax restrictions for business travellers and allow overseas exhibition organisers, exhibitors and buyers with the Amber Code to run and attend exhibitions at event premises with their face masks on and appropriate social distancing and preventive measures.”

GLOBALLY NEWS

Hong Kong exhibition industry is beginning to see renowned international trade exhibitions relocating from Hong Kong to destinations with less restrictive policies. Mega and international exhibitions have a long lead-time and therefore, exhibition organisers urgently need a clear road map to start exhibitor and buyer recruitments. Otherwise, Hong Kong exhibition industry is unable to bounce back and Hong Kong will lose advantages to other Asian cities. The exhibition industry and business sector need to be able to freely reconnect with the world to enable the economy to recover.

After having been in the eye of the COVID-19 storm for over 24 months, the hotel industry is finally getting back to its feet and if the past 4-5 months are any indicator to go by, we seem to be poised for a “W” shaped recovery. There’s been a gradual transition for hotels, which have so far survived solely on domestic leisure and taken a big chunk out of the big fat Indian wedding pie! We are witnessing the return and resurgence of corporate travelers, corporate incentives and the odd inbound tourists have begun to trickle in with the gradual opening of international borders and commercial flights. Fueled by the positive business sentiment, directives from Corporate’s to return to offices and with the urge to engage in face-to-face meetings, there is a sense of reassurance that the business is here to stay.

A great way to measure the buoyancy in business is to look out for the job market. Every hotel is in the process of ramping up their hiring, not just at the shop floor level but at senior management levels as well. As the demand comes back to pre -COVID levels, so does the travelers needs and their expectations.

Change in experiencecustomer

The pandemic certainly changed the hospitality landscape and while there was a paradigm shift in business segments, the underlying expectations on cleanliness, safety, hygiene and guest services pretty much remains the same across all business segments. We re-looked at all the spaces within the hotel to monetize all the possible avenues of revenue, we tweaked our cuisines to suit the palate of our customers and looked at adding more experiences in-house to keep our customers more engaged. Now, as we see things normalize, we are slowly moving towards a hybrid model to provide our customers the best of both worlds! Contactless payments, digital menus, heightened safety and hygiene protocols are some initiatives that we believe will carry forward as we enter the new era in hospitality.

www. Travbuzznews .com TravBuzz | 55

Peak wedding “saaya” dates are blocked out for wedding guests and topped with the odd corporate or domestic individual traveler(s).

The travel and hospitality sector is showing signs of strong revival, with a better than expected summer season behind us, we stand at the cusp of the season months with far more confidence and promise. Our business has slowly begun to sway towards the traditional business segments – Monday to Friday, there is significant Corporate demand for individual traveler as well as meetings. These are then topped- off with a trickle inbound tourists and domestic leisure. Weekends - Saturday to Sunday, are packed mostly with domestic tourists and a handful of inbound travelers.

To meet these needs requires the right mix of talent, energy, commitment and experience. In fact the biggest challenge facing the industry is not the uncertainty of the future, but the acute lack of skilled talent. COVID-19 induced a mass exodus of talent from the industry, most of whom are reluctant to come back. Colleges and institutes were closed and with almost negligible on-the -job training experience, there is a dearth of ready and available talent.

The hospitality industry seems to be fighting a war on two fronts, on one side there’s a constant battle to shake -off the adverse effects of the pandemic and generate crucial revenues & cash flow to sustain operations. On the other side, the geo-political equations have placed undue pressure on operating costs and supply chain. With materials and equipment costs going up, procurement cycles have increased significantly as well. It is taking up to 3 months from the date of ordering to replenish and replace regular operating supplies and stocks, the process in turn has become extremely cumbersome and time consuming.

These supply chain constraints and back log of orders have led to high cost of procurement and has become an expensive affair. Additionally, the cost of energy resources (Heat, Light and Power) has gone up significantly over the last few months. With the surge in prices of diesel, cooking gas and electricity units, the impact has started to trickle down and adversely affect the bottom line of an industry that is just about beginning to pick up the pieces and walk on its feet.

While we are definitely on the road to recovery, we still need to tread carefully and maintain the perfect balancing act in delivering high level of customer experience while also keeping a track on the bottom line!

Bader Ali Habib, South Asia International Operations Region Head of Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, said, “Looking at the economic growth trajectory of Tier II cities in India and the growing purchasing power among consumers, the accessibility that Dubai enjoys into smaller cities as well as the growing appetite for travel in India, we see an opportunity to further penetrate through a more targeted and personalised approach. Tier II audiences have a different travel pattern and behavior and we continue to closely study them and tailor our efforts for them..” Habib further added, “As India remains our no. 1 Source Market for the year, a lot of our efforts in the market are tailored, data-driven and dedicated to the tastes and liking of our audiences. From a B2B perspective, this year we have taken a more aggressive route in terms of B2B engagements, visits and outreach to ensure we can continue building relationship with the trade in smaller cities across all regions of India. We have partnered with leading travel agencies, OTA’s and B2B travel platforms. the no. 1 source market for the emirate. As compared to H1 2021, Dubai witnessed a 100% growth in visitor arrivals from India. Moreover, this number was close to the number of tourists achieved in the first half of 2019, which saw 996,000 Indian arrivals. The emirate’s ability to quickly return to near pre-pandemic tourism levels is even more remarkable given the impact of unprecedented challenges and other macroeconomic factors on the global economy and tourism sector.

As travel confidence increases, Dubai is anticipating a sustained visitation from India in 2022 and beyond, as more and more travellers discover and re-discover the city and the emirate’s diversification of offerings and experiences. With the continued support of Dubai Tourism’s stakeholders and partners, Dubai is committed to always offering something new, unique and world-class for the sophisticated global traveller. Early on this year, the emirate witnessed the inauguration of the beautiful building, the Museum of the Future, by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Many other mega projects are in the pipeline as Dubai continues to build on the destination pillars – whether it is culture or gastronomy, entertainment, wellness and relaxation, outdoor adventures or beach activities, family-oriented experiences and shopping in line with the emirate’s visionary leadership’s goal to make Dubai the most attractive destination and the best city in the world to live in and work.
