HONG KONG CONVENTION AND EXHIBITION CENTRE CROWNED ASIA’S BEST WITH 44 ACCOLADES ATTAINED IN 2021 The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (“HKCEC”) scooped a record-breaking total of 44 awards and certificates in 2021 despite being seriously impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining its leading position in the AsiaPacific region. This remarkable achievement is attributed to the concerted effort by the team of professionals behind its management company, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (Management) Limited (“HML”).
MICE AFFAIRS | 8
Recognitions attained by HML span across many different categories. Providing customers with world-class services and facilities, the HKCEC was voted the “Best Convention Centre (North Asia)” for the second time in a row in the M&C Asia 2021 Stella Awards organised by Northstar Meetings Group; as well as the “Exhibition Venue of the Year - Hong Kong” in the 2021 APAC Business Awards organised by APAC Insider magazine. HML’s F&B team has also earned eight awards at the Hong Kong International Culinary Classic 2021, demonstrating high level of culinary excellence and creativity.

In light of the pandemic, stringent preventive and social distancing measures have been adopted at all events and restaurants to give visitors peace of mind. HML’s flexibility in events rescheduling and professionalism in tailor-making solutions to comply with the Hong Kong Government’s anti-epidemic regulations has been widely acclaimed by all organisers. The HKCEC is the only Asian finalist of “Best Venue Event Safety Plan” (COVID-19 category) in the Exhibition News (EN) Awards 2021, organised by Mash Media Group Ltd. HML also received nine awards and certificates at the “Business Resilience & Community Contribution Awards 2021” organised by the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency, with all facilities and restaurants fully complying with anti-epidemic measures.
www.miceaffairs.com
HML’s commitment to sustainability was underpinned by the 19 sustainability-related awards and certificates garnered during the year, including the Grand Award in the Sustainability Development Goals (SDG) Achievements Awards Hong Kong organised by Green Council. Other awards and certificates were related to caring for the society, anti-discrimination and protecting the environment. HML was a founding signatory of the “Net Zero Carbon Events” Pledge, launched in November 2021 during COP26, committing to net zero carbon emission by 2050.
Ms Monica Lee-Müller, Managing Director of HML, is proud of the team’s outstanding accomplishments and remains positive towards the outlook of the industry, “Attributing to the resilience and innovation of the HML team in upholding hygiene measures, large-scale public events such as art shows, book fair, and concerts were held successfully and safely during the year. While we remain vigilant to the new variant Omicron, I am confident that our team will continue to overcome challenges brought by the pandemic, and is ready to welcome the return of international events and visitors as travel restrictions to and from Hong Kong are gradually relaxed.”

he Jamaica Pavilion has welcomed 84,683 visitors in the first three months of World Expo 2020 Dubai. This represents almost 1% of the total 8,958,132 million Expo visitors from October to December 2021. Under the theme Jamaica Makes It Move, the Jamaica Pavilion is proving to be a must-see Pavilion at Expo 2020. It is the scintillating music that welcomes you or the Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee on offer daily by Mokha 1450 or showcasing sports legends like Usain Bolt, that the Jamaica Pavilion is using to exemplify the unique beauty of this island nation. The Jamaica Pavilion has been deemed both one of the ‘coolest’ and ‘must see’ Pavilions at Expo 2020 Dubai, dedicated to highlighting the social, economic, and cultural vibrance unique to the Jamaican people. The visitor numbers are supporting the accolades ascribed to the Jamaica Pavilion.

mmediate attention & action on GST rationalisation and TCS abolition:
TAAI to Finance Minister
In its communications with Union Minister of Finance, Nirmala Sitharaman, Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) has presented certain important points, which requires the Ministry's prompt attention especially in the upcoming Budget for a Focus 2022. Speaking on which, Jyoti Mayal, President, TAAI said that the pandemic has created havoc for the travel trade for nearly two years now with no respite to the members from the government. “As the President of the largest travel Associations in India, we would like to bring into attention, inbound and domestic tourism business; competition faced internationally, due to GST: there is a huge gap between what overseas agents charge and what our members - tour operators and travel agents are required to charge to overseas customers and domestic travellers. She further updated on GST input credits, as hotels and other services are allowed to charge IGST, which should enable seamless availability of credit across states for travel agents and tour operators. Additionally, "Tour operators to be enabled a special presumptive GST rate of 1.8 per cent with full GST setoffs, travel agents to be allowed the option of exploring the reseller model for charging on airline tickets," she said expressing concerns on various other matters and seeking immediate intervention. Adding to which Jay Bhatia, VP, TAAI, further said that tourist transporters should also be allowed the provision for availing GST setoffs on the interstate tourist transport taxes, taxes on parking fees and taxes on fuel which is their biggest input costs. “GST on travel and tourism-related services must be given a Tax Holiday for at least Two Years, so as to increase the business and bypass the competition, due to the pandemic concerns, where the business has dropped to nearly zero,” he said. Talking about the Tax Collected at Source (TCS), Bettaiah Lokesh, HSG, TAAI commented that ease of doing business, displacing business from Indian travel companies to companies out of India, removing the safety net from Indian travellers and further explained other points as well with their cons and pros. He added that under the points addressed to the Hon'ble FM, TCS is a waste of time in ensuring compliances, loss in business due to inflated pricing due to GST and TCS, deviation of business from TAAI members to online companies and other travel agents overseas. So as to check the enhancement in business such taxes would be a hindrance to the growth of the economy as a whole. TAAI reteriates its appeals to abolish TCS.

Shreeram Patel, Hon. Treasurer, TAAI put forth the views and quoted, "We as an association are fully aligned to the nation’s need of enhancing tax compliance. Ensuring tax compliance on travel is effectively done through pan cards, which are being recorded for remittances. Aadhaar cards and passport detail records of the traveller." TAAI office bearers have volunteered that they would be happy to discuss a way forward with the Hon'ble Finance Minister. "This will also help us mutually develop a solution, which can lead to positive growth along with ease of doing business, enabling overall economic growth for India's Travel & Tourism which until last year has contributed over 11% of India's GDP. TAAI, as the Nodal Association, appeals for the Finance Minister's personal and immediate attention for action on GST Rationalisation and TCS Abolishment," the Association said.

“
TCEB Opts for the First-Ever Air Show in Thailand to Promote U-Tapao International Airport, Eastern Economic Corridor, and Thailand as ASEAN’s Aviation Hub ” Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau or TCEB initiated the Air Show to be organized for the first time in Thailand. Considering that U-Tapao Airport has great potential to be the venue of this event, the project was presented to the Eastern Economic Corridor Office of Thailand or EECO as an organization in charge of the development of U-Tapao Airport and the Eastern Aviation City. This international scale event will potentially upgrade Thailand’s status to the hub of the aviation industry in ASEAN.
Mr. Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, President of Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau or TCEB said as the chairman of the event, “Having this first Thailand International Air Show will open a new dimension in many aspects, such as promoting Thailand as an exhibition center, and aerospace trade. It is a large-scale international event from the initiative of TCEB and is the driving force of Thailand's high-technology industry to the global market. In addition, this event promotes Thailand as one of the world's leading manufacturers and exporters of aircraft parts. According to the information from the BOI, in 2018, Thailand exported aircraft parts and equipment as much as USD$3.18 billion or around a hundred trillion baht. Entrepreneurs in the aforementioned industries will have the opportunity to participate in the development of the world's aerospace industry to their fullest potential”

Ms.Nichapa Yoswee, Senior Vice President at Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) said “TCEB is not only the main organization in driving the MICE industry as a tool to develop the country's economy through innovation to create prosperity and distributed income to all sectors in a sustainable way, we also have a role as a National Bidder, bringing world-class events to be organized in Thailand to create a positive impact on the social, economic and ecological sectors of the conference trade show and international festivals from the Thailand 4.0 policy. The policy focuses on innovation-driven economy and the 20year national strategic plan that aims to promote 12 SCurve industries, especially 5 new target industries (Focused Industries), in which the aviation industry and logistics (Aviation & Logistics) is one of them. The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) has a policy to develop U-Tapao International Airport and the Eastern Aviation City in the EEC area to elevate Thailand into the hub of ASEAN aviation industry. TCEB has initiated and pushed forward the "Thailand International Air Show" event to occur in Thailand under the concept of Future of Aerospace, which presents a position that emphasizes innovation in the future (Innovation Technology) to reflect the image of Thailand 4.0 in all sectors, whether civil, commercial or security forces.” The idea and concept of bringing this world-class trade show to Thailand can be traced back to 2017 when TCEB responded to the industry 4.0 policy, and in 2018, Thailand by TCEB began studying data on air show events. In order to assess the feasibility of bringing the Air show to Thailand in 2019, TCEB has started to study the feasibility of the project, including various cooperation models to set up a framework for cooperation in organizing aviation trade shows. Moreover, public hearing activities and meetings with relevant agencies were organized. At present, TCEB recommended Thailand to be the host of the event by inviting relevant agencies such as the Eastern Economic Corridor Policy Office (EECO), U-Tapao International Aviation Company Limited (UTA), the Royal Thai Navy
(RTP), and Pattaya City. Moreover, TCEB aims to elevate the aviation and logistic industries of Thailand and to prepare the entrepreneurs in MICE industry in the area to support “Thailand International Air Show” through “Road to Air Show” project. TCEB has initiated a trade fair and MICE industry conference under the name "Aviation & LOG-IN Week", which is a combination of shows, conferences, and mega events to increase the opportunity to participate and to add value to the business or industry and help to stimulate the positive impetus. TCEB anticipates that from 2023 to 2027, there will be a total of 28 new and continuous events in the EEC area as part of the project "Aviation & LOG- IN Week," with the Thailand International Air Show generating a positive economic impact to Thailand of over 8 billion baht during that time period.

business dealings in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) area. EEC is pleased and appreciates the idea of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (Public Organization) or TCEB that wants to push for an aviation trade show and world-class logistics in Thailand, which will promote the development of technology, products, services and labor, as well as increase the competitiveness of the Thai aviation industry as well as related industries in various fields to advance and be equal to international standards. In addition, this project is in line with the U-Tapao Airport Development Policy and the Eastern Aviation City in the EEC area to elevate Thailand into the hub of ASEAN's aviation industry.” "Because Thailand is unique in its geographical location and cultural attractions in each region, Thailand remains one of the most popular tourist destinations worldwide. In 2019, Thailand's six major airports can accommodate more than 140 million passengers per year, with up to 450,000 flights per year across the world. The country as a whole has a high demand for airplane maintenance services. The value exceeds 36,500 million baht, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand has registered 679 aircrafts in the country.” "In response to the government's strategy to boost the aviation sector and logistics in accordance with the national development plan, EEC has driven Thailand's development to increase its potential to become a fully-integrated aviation hub. As a result, one of the country's major infrastructure projects is the building of U-Tapao Airport and the Eastern Aviation City. Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO), Part Manufacturing, and other associated components will be incorporated within the area to establish the groundwork for the development of a comprehensive aviation sector. The Thailand International Air Show event will be a stepping stone to declare Thailand's aviation industry's immense potential to be more than a tourism destination, but also an Aviation Hub or a one-stop service for the aviation businesses."

Operations at Kuwait International Airport remained at limited capacity during the first nine months of the year, with restrictions imposed and direct flights suspended from 35 countries. The fast roll-out of vaccinations in Kuwait contributed to the ease of restriction in the second half of the year, with PCR test mandated upon departure and arrival to limit the quarantine in Kuwait. Speaking of the airline’s performance, Jazeera Airways Chief Executive Officer, Rohit Ramachandran, said: “The challenges that the pandemic brought about in the travel industry in 2020 also opened new opportunities for our airline: cargo operations, charter flights and connecting routes were expanded to benefit our business. We were resourceful in adapting our
business operations which enabled us to get through a very difficult period and come back strongly in 2021.”
2021 OPERATIONAL REVIEW Jazeera launched eight new routes in 2021, serving popular tourist and expat destinations that comprised Colombo (Sri Lanka), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Yerevan (Armenia), Antalya (Turkey) and Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) in addition to London Heathrow airport as the first low-cost carrier (LCC) in the Middle East to operate direct flights to the airport. The airline also rolled out its
summer schedule with favorite destinations for tourists, such as the Lebanese capital, Beirut, and other popular summer destinations including Tbilisi (Georgia), Trabzon and Bodrum (Turkey). Jazeera also took delivery of four Airbus A320neo aircraft during the year, bringing the fleet to 17 aircraft. Jazeera Terminal T5 saw its second quarter of profit in Q4 2021, ending the year with a net profit of KD1.1 million, compared to a net loss of KD1.4 million in 2020.
FLEET ORDER Jazeera placed a new fleet order with Airbus for 20 A320neos, 8 A321neos and 5 further options. The deal is valued at US$3.4 billion (KD1.3 billion). The order will effectively double Jazeera’s current fleet size to 35 aircraft, supporting the airline’s expansion plans to further boost its contribution to Kuwait’s travel sector. The aircraft mix aims to give Jazeera flexibility to extend its network to medium and longer haul destinations from Kuwait, offering passengers more choice to travel to popular destinations as much as underserved ones.
POSITIVE OUTLOOK FOR 2022 AND BEYOND Boodai concluded: “We are confident that restrictions on the travel sector will only continue to ease, and traffic will return to pre-Covid-19 levels. Countries around the world have started to fully open their borders. As for Jazeera, we are looking forward to moving forward with our expansion plans, growing our network and fleet as well as our business capabilities.”

Seoul, KOREA- Seoul Tourism Organization won the grand prize at the first Seoul Universal Design Awards for its barrier-free environment creation project in December 2021. The organization has been promoting the ‘Universal Tourism Environment Creation Project’ since 2019 to improve the physical environment, strengthen access to information, and improve social awareness, so anyone, including the disabled and the elderly, can travel the city conveniently. Seoul Danurim Accessible Tourism Center, which opened in 2019 as part of the project, offers essential services including the operation of wheelchair accessible vehicles and travel assistive device rentals, and provision of accessibility information through the website. Seoul Danurim Minivans equipped with wheelchair ramps are available for reservation which will give tourists easy access to various tourist attractions across Seoul. Business travelers visiting Seoul for a MICE event can make a reservation for “recommended tours” in advance to use the vehicle at no cost and just enjoy a day trip throughout the city by visiting recommended barrier-free tourist spots. Or they can rent the minivans at a reasonable price which only includes operational cost such as fuel, parking and tolls for the trips they designed to fit the preference.
