SINGAPORE:

SETTING THE STANDARD FOR GREEN MICE EVENTS Known worldwide as a “Garden City”, Singapore has always put sustainability at the heart of its development plans. Launched in early 2021, the Singapore Green Plan 2030 sets a vision across various aspects of sustainability: from urban development and renewables adoption to resource conservation and food security. All sectors have taken steps to support these national efforts, and the MICE industry is no exception.

FACILITATING MEANINGFUL DIALOGUE ON SUSTAINABILITY Events play an integral role in raising awareness and uncovering solutions to the world’s collective climate challenges, and Singapore takes pride in hosting platforms that inspire such necessary dialogue and action. For example, Temasek’s Ecosperity Week gathers leaders from across sectors and geographies to share insights and best practices on sustainable development. Conversations are also being held at the industry level, including at the annual Asia Sustainability Reporting Summit and even at the Singapore FinTech Festival where green financing has become a central area for discussion.

A PLACE FOR GREEN EVENTS Besides hosting various sustainability-related events, Singapore also has infrastructure for events to take place with minimal environmental impact. The country’s MICE venues have stepped up to the challenge of reducing their carbon footprints and waste.

Singapore is set to become a “City of Green Possibilities” – with the MICE industry is doing its part.

The Sands Expo and Convention Centre is Singapore’s first carbonneutral MICE venue and is supporting the nation’s green energy targets through investments in Renewable Energy Certificates. Resorts World Sentosa is home to one of the country’s largest solar panel installations which can produce enough electricity to power 108 four-room flats every year. Fairmont Singapore and Swissôtel The Stamford have an urban aquaponics farm that champions sustainable agriculture practices in the industry. Despite its constraints in size and natural resources, Singapore is paving the way for a sustainable future for all. It will continue to blaze trails for a greener tomorrow, and the business events industry is taking up this mantle.

#REEVENT The rallying cry to revive business tourism in the Principality of Monaco

T

he health crisis provoked by the COVID-19 pandemic has hit the tourism industry hard. While individual tourism is ticking over at a reduced pace, business tourism – characterized by gatherings of professionals from all backgrounds – has come to a complete halt. With hopes of a recovery, stakeholders in the meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) industry, whether event organizers or host venues, are conscious of the need to rethink their model, while offering the security guarantees that everyone has a right to expect. It will require inventiveness and innovation, and must focus on intellectual capital, flexibility, and optimizing transport and spaces, with an approach which is as environmentally friendly as possible. More motivated than ever to lay the groundwork for the industry’s future, the Monaco Convention Bureau, a catalyst for the Principality’s MICE offering, has launched a new communication campaign with the slogan #REEVENT. The campaign comprises six visual slogans which clearly emphasize the values that underpin Destination Monaco: security, service, unity of place and action, and commitment to the environment. RESEARCH RESEARCH The demand for digital services is highest amongst those who organise events. This is a core finding from the second edition of the Industry Partners Benchmark Survey, released by UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry. Developed by the UFI Industry Partners Working Group, the survey benchmarks and assesses the relationships between industry partners/suppliers and exhibition organisers/venues. It also identifies areas for improvement with regard to collaboration. Around 190 companies contributed to the project, the majority of whom are from Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. “The results of our first survey showed in tangible terms the value organisers place on their suppliers and partners for the success of their events. Our second survey goes deeper and also demonstrates where the suppliers and partners relationship stands vis-à-vis the organisers for their recovery period events,” says Ravinder Sethi, Chair of UFI’s Industry Partners Working Group. The survey demonstrates that the demand for services that can be considered as mandatory services for running an event have experienced a steady decline in demand. The results show that booth construction remains the most relied upon service, alongside staff and security. And the survey clearly indicates that the demand for more innovation from service providers remains high, and marketing and communications service providers are perceived to be the most innovative Sebastian Witt, Vice Chair of UFI’s Industry Partners Working Group and responsible for the survey, said:

MICE AFFAIRS | 9

“This survey offers valuable insights for service providers in our industry. We are happy to note that service providers are regarded an integral part of the exhibition ecosystem and contribute tremendously to the success of our industry. Nonetheless, we observe that service quality is not consistent and demands from service providers are changing; service providers can and should invest more into innovation.” Despite the overall positive feedback, the survey highlights that increasing the sharing of information between service providers and industry partners could be beneficial, although this trend has declined in significance over the last year.

Leading Global MICE Industry Magazine

“This survey, in its second year, is an important and continuous task of UFI’s Industry Partners Working Group, which has been set up for and run by our industry partner members – a group of motivated industry experts offering a diverse range of services. The collaboration between exhibition organisers, venue operators and industry partners is more important than ever to sustain successful exhibitions, as the exhibition industry and the global economy are being seriously impacted by COVID-19,” says UFI President Monica Lee-Müller

With The Covid still around, what was the motive behind to venture into a travel/event/ wedding business? There is a famous adage which says “Every Crisis is an opportunity”. In my case, the basis of taking a plunge and forming my Company VR4U Solutions Private Limited was personal. I always wanted to contribute towards Philanthropy. Though I have been doing this on a smaller scale out of my salary but this was insufficient since I wanted to do more. Now, there were two ways I could aspire mydream: either to open an NGO and go to various Corporate Houses pleading for funding (out of theirCSR program) OR open my own Company -strive hard, use my competencies to the fullest and generate money so that I may contribute a portion of it on what I aspired for. I embraced the later which resulted in the formation of VR4U SOLUTIONS PRIVATE LIMITED!
