EDITOR’S NOTE

The “Focus” is the keyword to success, be it professional, personal or social life. We at MICE AFFAIRS are trying our best to be focused and work on the same lines so as to deliver focused content and articles to our valuable readership. Being a part of the team, it’s really motivating & encouraging to hand over the 3rd edition of MICE AFFAIRS magazine to our avid readers. Thanks for being with us. The 3rd edition features news, articles, updates, interviews and events coverage from all four verticals of M.I.C.E., which has been the driving force of our project. Another prime objective is to highlight MICE players, who are delivering the best services in their respective domains and claim for due attention and recognition. It also gives me immense pleasure to let our readers know about our latest developments on joining hands with ITB ASIA, Europe Congress, Ace of MICE Expo, PVPC Expo as a media partner for the upcoming editions. We are committed to connecting the MICE industry so as to create more business opportunities in times to come. While working for this edition our team had several quality meetings with MICE players on different issues, opportunities, and challenges, existing in the industry. Be it Corporate, Travel Company, Association or service provider. Some of them highlighted payments are a big issue, but on the other side, they do have high expectations for this chunk of business called MICE. We all agree it’s a number game creating huge revenues from different heads- Air travel, Accommodation, Transfers-Sightseeing, event and so on. Client’s expectation needs to be set and met. But we need to remember the sequence of the set and met. The “Set” comes first so briefing the deliverables in advance. This has been the crux of meeting with most MICE players. We know this is a controversial subject, so we shall be starting a survey in coming months to get more views on this subject.

For the corporate Interview section, we are thankful to our friends from the corporate side for supporting us by supplying their views, suggestions, and expectations. Friends, MICE is not proving to be a job-creating industry sector, rather it’s turning out to be an entrepreneur generating sector and helping hand for start-ups too. Relationship Building is the keyword. During our visit to some of the reputed Tourism Education Institute, we had the chance to interact with students pursuing tourism education. Most of them have a clear vision of joining MICE but they are sticking to the M&I sector only. The scope of the Conference and Exhibition sector is still unknown to them. To cover this gap, some of the venues have started providing education on exhibition sector too. A great step to welcome for MICE Industry. Drop Us Your Comments & Suggestions ...... We would love to hear from you ! Let us know 1. What you think of our magazine 2. Any success stories related to MICE movements handled by you 3. Creativity implemented with your MICE groups/ exhibitions/conference projects Drop us a note and you might see your creativity/ projects/ideas printed here in the future! write to us at: Sachin@miceaffairs.com

Norwegian Cruise Line unveils Hull Artwork for Norwegian Encore

Norwegian Cruise Line revealed that Eduardo Arranz-Bravo, the award-winning Spanish artist, created the hull artwork for the fourth and final ship of its Breakaway-Plus class, Norwegian Encore, debuting in Miami in November 2019. A representation of his modern and abstract style, the ship’s hull will feature a labyrinth of color inspired by Arranz-Bravo’s life by the sea in Barcelona and pay tribute to the vibrant guest experience for which the Norwegian brand is recognized. “Norwegian Cruise Line is a dynamic, pioneering company known for its innovative experiences and breathtaking collection of beautifully designed ships,” said Arranz-Bravo. “I am honored to not only bring that vibrancy to life even more on Norwegian Encore but also showcase my love for the ocean and my hometown of Barcelona.” Frank Del Rio, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, played a key role in the selection of Arranz-Bravo as the hull artist for Norwegian Encore, having been inspired by his work for many years. Del Rio’s passion for the arts has helped elevate Norwegian’s on-board experience, most recently with the multi-million-dollar art collection curated for Norwegian Bliss. “We are well-known for our iconic hull designs and know that Arranz-Bravo’s lively design will complement the colorful destinations in the Caribbean that Norwegian Encore will visit when she debuts next year,” said Del Rio. Recognized for his inventive and humanistic approach to abstract art, Arranz-Bravo’s work is showcased throughout MICR Affairs |

the world and portrays a constant evolution that some refer to as futuristic. He is highly regarded, having been the recipient of countless awards and accolades, and was one of three artists chosen to represent the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. “Eduardo’s design will be a perfect complement to the collection of hull artwork within our fleet and is a testament to the dynamic experience our guests will have on board,” said Andy Stuart, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line. “We are proud to welcome him to our Norwegian Cruise Line family.” At approximately 167,800 gross tons and accommodating up to 4,000 guests, Norwegian Encore will complete the Breakaway-Plus class, the most successful class in the company’s history. She is currently being built at Meyer Werft, in Papenburg, Germany and will feature many innovative dining, entertainment and recreational activities that guests have come to expect from the industryleading brand. Following her unveiling, she will cruise out of Miami every Sunday and sail seven-day voyages to the Eastern Caribbean, beginning with her first journey on November 17, 2019 through April 12, 2020.

Corporate Interview Q 1: Since how long Havells is using MICE as a platform for its employees or business partners? What have been the objectives behind? Since 2005. Focusing majorly on our Business partners and Channel partners, the initial thought was to understand their outlook towards Havells as a brand, what are the expectations from us, how to grow mutually etc. Objectives have been to strengthen the bond between partners and Company so that they also share the sam goal and work towards a more brighter future TOGETHER. Q 2: Which all destinations have been covered since the last 10 years for MICE projects? Kindly share major highlights? We have covered various parts of the Globe, from the US East coast to the US West Coast, Europe, various Asian countries, Australia, South Africa, and Switzerland etc. The major highlight was recently, when we executed the largest group of over 1000 partners at middle east where we had a BIG conference and highly engaging itinerary which included the spouses. The singing competition was judged by some of the famous Bollywood celebrities. Large exhibition of our future upcoming products, photo op zones, engagement areas for spouses and kids. Q 3: What do you think about changing trends in MICE Industry? How this is helpful for corporate planning a MICE Project The changing trends of MICE Industry are 1) Technology for engagements 2) Technology for Data management 3) Social Media amplifications & Engagements 4) Tech Based experiential events 5) Next Level of hospitality by Hotels Today As far the hotels are concerned, their exemplary service, the epitome of cleanliness and use of latest technologies has up the game. Bigger ballrooms to accommodate larger numbers and the added advantage of room inventory to support the numbers that visit for MICE are a great advantage in catering to the space. Fortunately for India, they leveraged this advantage to put India on the MICE map to a great extent. Hotels are already facing intense competition and the MICE sector is expected to grow. As meeting formats and technology will continue to develop, hotels need to assimilate these changes and adapt to the latest trends. Hotel Industry seeking to increase their share in the MICE market must create more flexible services and adopt new changes to offer the best experience to their guests.

Mukesh Kr Jain, Havells India Ltd. Sr. General Manager - Marketing Communication

Q 4: Kindly share your expectations from a travel or event planner? We, at Havells, expect our travel/event planners to understand our goals and objectives. I am glad to say that our partners also have a similar outlook & more than just organizing the tour, they talk about how we can generate more business from such schemes for Havells. So the creativity is probably not limited to the budget as a MICE buyer, it has stretched to contributing “creativity to the business”. I have been associated with MARCOM but we aren’t a support unit for sales- we have our own ways of growing the business via such engagement mediums. We believe in the longevity of our relations THUS understanding is at a different level. They should not miss the newness in work due to our beliefs. We give an understandable insight to our partners to contribute & collaborate with them to come to conclusions. “Can I be better than what I am” - This should be their mantra. Giving Havells the value in spends, ensuring our business strategy & agendas are met with. But I believe we need better people who understand the requirement clearly & think alike. It is more important to have MICE activities which are profitable for the company & travellers. Q 5: Any WOW moments of MICE projects which you would like to share with readers? WOW moments are the moments we have created for our travellers when they really felt WOW. Honestly we have many such moments everyday in every trip because we ensure we dont repeat the earlier WOWs. A small things like Mrs. Sharma getting surprised looking at the menu with the lentil named as “Sharma ji ki pasandida daal Customisation is the key these days and we do it brilliantly well. In Conversation

Destination Focus Oman Mice Affairs in conversation with Oman Convention Bureau to find out What Oman has to offer for MICE Customers……….. Oman’s national strategy for tourism underlines MICE as one of the main focus areas. The Ministry of Tourism, Oman is fully committed towards enhancing the MICE sector to help the Sultanate achieve its potential to be a first class destination for this sector. The government established the Oman Convention Bureau (OCB) under The Ministry of Tourism in 2016 to take care of the MICE business in Oman. This was successfully taken forward in 2017 with the development of Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) and various collaborations between the government and private sector was lead by OCB. Many new international hotel chains recently opened in Oman have increased the number of rooms and venues in the country. Now travelers have variety of rooms and hotel options to choose. Also, the recently announced short stay visa for just 5 Omani Riyal (OMR) for a period of 10 days will bring momentum to MICE tourism growth. Which means, Indians who hold a valid visa to any one of these countries – United States of America, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Japan and Schengen States can avail the Oman visa through an e-visa process by simply logging on to https://evisa.rop.gov.om/ and make the 5 OMR payment on checkout, whereas other Indian travelers can get a sponsored visa by paying 5 OMR plus processing fee through their tour operators. This is in addition to the

existing e-visa for Oman which is available at 20 OMR with a validity of one month. Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) is one of the key drivers of MICE business to Oman and is located in its own fully integrated precinct only four kilometers from the Muscat International Airport. The design of the Centre ensures a flow of the meeting spaces to suit the most discerning conference and exhibition organizers. It also incorporates expansive concourse areas to enable ease of large delegations with floor to ceiling windows overlooking landscaped gardens and water features. The Centre features two tiered auditoriums to seat 3,200 and 450, while the five exhibition halls feature 22,396 square metres of column-free

exhibition space. Hall 1 acts as a multi-purpose space for plenary sessions, concerts, performances and gala dinners on a larger scale. Halls 1 & 2 combined can seat over 10,000 seated in theatre-style. The Centre also includes an additional 20 meeting rooms for 25-360 delegates, a Grand Ballroom to seat up to 1,200 guests, a Junior Ballroom to seat up to 540 guests and a VIP Pavilion. In total the Centre offers over 55 meeting space options plus a multi-storey car park with a capacity for 4,000 vehicles. The Precinct provides the infrastructure necessary to host successful international, regional and local events and is there for the enjoyment of delegates, visitors and the local community. The state-of-the-art OCEC has recently seen the grand opening of the four-star Crowne Plaza Muscat OCEC, which is the first of three hotels to open within the new Madinat Al Irfan district. Development of the area is fast progressing,

with the five-star JW Marriot hotel coming up. Once complete, the precinct will also include a business park, retail shopping areas and residential districts, surrounded by a nature reserve that will be a haven for Oman’s exotic birdlife, together with parklands and a wadi park. Along with providing excellent Omani hospitality and quality, we offer Authentic Arabian experience to visitors with respect to food, stay, culture, history and other activities. Increase in number of flights to Oman, ongoing construction of many new international hotel chains, diversification of tourism products, recently launched new Muscat International Airport, upcoming phase II of the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) and recent revision in visa process will bring momentum to MICE tourism in the coming year.

Vanilla products, be it meetings, incentives, conferences or exhibition/ events. Excitement, Experience, and localization are the buzzwords. Nowadays, you got to deal with many aware and matured travelers. Please do not be mistaken that if your client is looking for something exciting, it does not necessarily mean that he is willing to spend extra as budget remain the same more or less. The challenge is to allocate the same money so meticulously into the elements that bring excitement, experience, and localization and at the same time get rid of stereotype spends.

“The B2B session had completed 5,763 successful appointments and PCEB managed to produce Penang’s first four incentive promotional videos on PITE. We hope that this will further display Penang as a selected choice destination for both leisure and Business Events for not only India, but also to the global industry,” said Ashwin Gunasekeran, CEO of Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau. A total of 50 Penang and Malaysian Business Events and tourism products and suppliers exhibited at PITE 2018’s B2B day. “PITE 2018 has offered our Indian agents the opportunity to explore Penang fully. Traditionally Malaysia has promoted Kuala Lumpur, Genting and Langkawi. Penang is the new focus and with EDWIN our agents can now package and sell Penang as a 4D/3N destination for leisure and MICE/cruise,” said Harmandeep Singh Anand, Managing Director of GPS. PCEB is committed to its mission to grow the Indian market for Business Events in Penang. In Jan 2019, PCEB will embark on a multi-city sales mission in India, a follow up of its 2018 Penang Sales Mission to India.

Five experiences coming to life at IMEX America

Here are five experiences to keep an eye out for at the Sands Expo once the 2018 edition of IMEX America opens, starting with Smart Monday, on October 15. The full business bonanza of the trade show runs October 16 -18. Recent research carried out by MPI Outlook for the IMEX Group showed that more than two thirds (69 per cent) of event planners expect to include experiential elements in their meetings and conventions from now on, while a further 16 per cent plan to add them in a year or two. For the 5 per cent expecting to introduce them in three years or more, IMEX America is likely to prove that’s just too late; attendee expectations are higher than ever and growing every day, fueled by exceptional live experiences now available at home and at play. 1. The MPI Carnival: New this year as part of Smart Monday powered by Meeting Professionals International (MPI), October 15 is an American style carnival. Experience magicians, jugglers and artists, LEGO furniture, balloon columns and carnival games. This magical Monday sets the tone for an energetic week. 2. C2 Learning Labs: IMEX Group’s newest partner, C2 International, the ground-breaking leader in business conferences,

is tearing down creativity barriers with its Learning Labs. C2 is set to stir the imagination and disrupt conventional thinking. The C2 team will also be presenting a Masterclass – ‘Emotions and Technology: An Exploration of Audience Connection’ – as part of the MPI Keynote series at 08:30 a.m. on Thursday. 3. IMEX Live Zone: Sample a smile-inducing selection of interactive live event experiences. The Live Zone will be home to giant, mobile puppets, a VR zip line, digital caricatures, artists, jugglers, a Kinetic Magic Wall and a living wall. These concepts, some small and some mighty, can easily be planned into traditional event formats. 4. IMEX Tech Zone: This is a brand new testing ground for new event technology, where buyers can try out innovative products and ideas brought to the show by new or up and coming tech companies. 5.The Legacy Wall: For heart-warming and inspiring stories and case studies from exhibitors, attendees, partners and IMEX staff. This simple, walk-up wall puts this year’s IMEX Talking Point – Legacy – at the heart of the show. A good, old-fashioned analogue experience. “IMEX America takes place October 16 – 18 at the Sands® Expo and Convention Center at The Venetian® | The Palazzo® in Las Vegas, preceded by Smart Monday, powered by MPI, on October 15” MICR Affairs |

With the growing numbers of business and trade units across the world, Trade Associations are playing a vital role for the welfare of business entities. India market from the Association’s viewpoint is considered to be an unorganized sector. But, rather than calling it an unorganized sector it’s a vast and huge industry sector, which needs to be given due recognition. And for the same, you need time, research and connect with Trade associations across all areas. This is the only way to reduce your client acquisition cost from 3-4 digits to a single digit.

Officials from the Ministry of Tourism, led by Her Excellency, Maitha Saif Al Mahrouqi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Tourism (MOT) Oman along with representative partners from the tourism industry and Oman Air were present at the roadshow. The unique interactive platform with prefixed meetings gave trade partners and travel agents in the Indian market an opportunity to interact and learn more about the diverse product offerings and experiences that Oman has to offer. This makes Oman a preferred destination for travellers looking for a unique experience. The country’s stunning landscape appeals to every kind of holiday seeker; from families looking for solitude to a perfect honeymoon getaway or a group of friends in quest for an adventure of a lifetime. Hence, as part of the Sultanate’s National Tourism Strategy 2040, the Ministry of Tourism seeks to introduce the sector’s latest developments, services, projects and facilities of the tourism industry, such as opening the new passenger terminal at Muscat International Airport and launching the Electronic Visa. It also aims to promote the MICR Affairs |

Sultanate’s unique cultural heritage, the pristine environment and terrain diversification that will allow tourists to experience the destination.” Since 2014, Oman has witnessed over 31 per cent growth in Indian arrivals. In 2017 alone, Oman received 321,161 Indian visitors, showcasing growth of over 7 per cent in just one year. Commenting on the roadshow, Ms. Lubaina Sheerazi, India Representative, Ministry of Tourism, Oman said, “India represents an important and vast market for Oman given the high percentage of its residents willing to travel and experience new destinations across the world. The roadshow offers us a platform to expose the uniqueness of Oman as a holiday destination from India. From luxurious resorts and campsites to exotic scuba diving spots to rustic shopping experiences, Oman has something to offer to anyone who has a quest for adventure and thirst for a distinctive cultural experience.” Additionally, the Ministry of Tourism is fully committed to enhancing the MICE sector and to help the Sultanate achieve its potential to be a first-class destination for this

segment. The Sultanate has seen an increase in business tourism with the recent launch of the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre in Muscat, which supports international and local organizations in hosting large events. The Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre includes state-of-the-art theatres, conference rooms and four hotels with almost 1000 rooms along with major exhibition halls that can cater to tens of thousands of people at one time. “Oman is not only seeing a surge in MICE travel but also a preferred wedding destination for many. Muscat is a well endowed city with modern infrastructure and provides a perfect set up for weddings with various urban world class hotels. Being under 3 hours away and having excellent air connectivity with various cities in India also makes Oman a preferable wedding destination for Indians. What also works in Oman’s favour is the newness it brings. It is still a relatively unexplored destination and this also adds value as Indian clients want to explore new destinations”, adds Ms. Sheerazi. Oman Air, the national carrier is connected via direct flights with major Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Kochi, Goa, Jaipur

and Thiruvananthapuram. Besides, Air India, Jet Airways, SpiceJet and IndiGo are also well connected from various cities of India. Furthermore, to encourage more travellers to visit the country, Oman has recently announced a new short-term tourist visa at 5 Omani Riyal (OMR) equivalent to approximately INR 940 to visit the Sultanate for a period of 10 days. Indians who hold a valid visa to any one of these countries – United States of America, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Japan and Schengen States can avail the Oman visa through an e-visa process by simply logging on to https://evisa.rop. gov.om/ and make the 5 OMR payment on checkout, whereas other Indian travellers can get a sponsored visa by paying 5 OMR plus processing fee through their tour operators. Knowledge Sharing-Exhibition Sucess

Listen and Learn- Key to Exhibition Success

All Talk… Today many exhibitions are more than just shows. Enlightened organisers are only too aware that visitors need to justify their attendance at a show at a far deeper level than ever before. As an exhibitor you always need to see value for money and a return on investment whenever you decide to promote yourself in this wonderful medium But without quality visitors you’ll never achieve your goals. So where is the key added-value ingredient? It’s content - knowledge – intelligence – and feedback. The strongest link between visitor and exhibitor is the seminar, the speaker slot, the power breakfast, the conference, the evidence of thought leadership. Today one of the most powerful justifications for exhibitors to exhibit and for visitors to visit a show is the knowledge, the content that both parties will gather from the event.

So how do you take advantage of it? Let me share with you some ideas that we suggest to our clients to give them added clout when they exhibit. Firstly agree that one of your objectives should be the gathering of market research. Intelligence. Develop a programme which, as well as explaining MICR Affairs |

all about your products and services, asks questions of the audience. A well thought out feedback form is a powerful way to gather this intelligence.

Feedback questionnaires Generating quantities of contacts is not difficult – simply hire the scanner pens But generating quality prospects is all together another matter. I believe in good old fashioned paper, the feedback form, with a series of usually no more than 5 questions, the answers to which will inform and strongly enhance your future marketing. There is a simple principle here – don’t be afraid to ask visitors for their opinions on four or five topics, and be prepared to offer a thank you for their participation. This is straight forward face to face market research which gives you the answers to

questions you probably ask yourself in the office but may neglect to ask your own industry professionals prospects, and peers… “Has your budget for our widgets / services increased, decreased, or remained static in the current economic climate?; When will you next need our products? What budget have you allocated?; What specifically did you come to the show to find? How much do you know about us?; What is your role and responsibility in specifying widgets? What would we need to do to win your account?” All these questions and many more can be worked into a game show format, or asked directly and will generate invaluable reading later. More than that the answers can be analysed and used as an internal – or even an external – report on the current state of your industry.

Seminars Many trade shows incorporate seminars on current issues and best practice. When negotiating your stand space offer to sponsor a seminar or deliver one, or even hold a mini seminar on your own stand. But don’t make them a sales pitch. The more intelligent, impartial, and content rich your seminar is, the more respect you will earn from your audience.

Make sure that on every seat in your seminar theatre, or on your stand is a feedback form which embodies some of the questions suggested above, or others directly encompassed within your presentation. Be seen as thought leaders

“Don’t be afraid to ask visitors for their opinions” The Speaker slot These days many exhibition organisers arrange a programme of speakers – but even if they don’t, what’s to stop you the exhibitor, suggesting that you have special knowledge on a particular topic and you would like to negotiate a speaker slot. You may have an appropriate well known authority working in your company. By arrangement with the organisers you would usually be able to make sure that every member of the audience has the opportunity to fill out a feedback form with their opinion of the speaker and the topic, with their contact details, with requests for any papers, articles or recordings of the content, and even with a request for a visit or further conversation with your company. At the very least your speaker should direct the audience to your exhibition stand – and on your stand you should make visitors constantly aware of the speaker slot that you are sponsoring. So who wins? You the exhibitor represent yourself as an authority in your profession or industry. Your company benefits from the market research and current information which you gather face to face in real time from your prospects and peers. But the biggest winners are the visitors. Knowledge and communication keep companies ahead, alive and thriving. The savvy visitor will be far more able to justify their attendance at any show if they can return to their companies or organisations with solid information to move their companies - and their own careers - forward. It’s about listening and learning.

lighting Thailand’s position as a connecting point for business and international ties, key in the new branding strategy is to further spotlight Thailand as a fast-paced, innovative, and progressive business events destination in lines with the Thailand 4.0 and the dynamic business landscape.” Under the new brand campaign, each of the key sectors, M.I.C.E, will be implementing strategic plans that enhance Thailand’s recognition in the international arena as well as the growth of revenues. For Meetings and Incentive sectors (MI), Asia remains in focus as a primary source market powering by rising trends of corporate travels secto and Meetings & Incentives in China, while the growth of travellers from India and Indonesia are predicted at 11.3% and 8.7% (GBTA) respectively. By type of events, the bureau aims to attracting mega-size groups, corporate meetings, and premium incentives groups from Asia. In the secondary markets including Europe, Oceania and Emerging countries, TCEB will focus on premium incentives groups and corporate meetings. For Convention sector (C), TCEB aims primarily to Bring More Business in the 10 S-Curve Industries through a deeper partnership with strategic alliances. The bureau will encourage the sector to Uplift Experience for delegates through active learning and participant activities, apply technology such as Engaging Apps to facilitate delegates, and Strengthen Key Players to improve the capability of conference sector. For Exhibition sector (E), TCEB introduces a newly designed campaign so-called ‘We Support You 360 Degree’ to provide supporting tools for essential activities in the entire value chain. In term of the exhibitors and show visitors, TCEB introduces incentives through Exhibiz in Market program to raise the sale of exhibition space, and

through ASEAN + 6 Privilege, a brand new program which is introduced to boost show visitors from target countries. Along with the new brand, TCEB is redefining its role to help driving the Thailand 4.0 Policy to fruition. The bureau is transforming from a mere supporter and marketer of business events hosted to become a facilitator, developer, thought leader, co-creator as well as enabler of the business events industry. Meanwhile, TCEB is focusing on a more in-depth and broader partnership as well as a collaboration with stakeholders in bidding and attracting business events from the 10 S-Curve Industries. A sample of the collaborative project is One Ministry One Expo, which will be a platform that unifies efforts from the public and private sectors. TCEB is moving forward with an important mission to promote business events industry as Thailand’s key economic contributor. The bureau estimated that at the end of the fiscal year 2018, Thailand will welcome 1,327,000 overseas business travellers or 3.96% growth from 2017, generating 124,000 million baht in revenue to the country or a growth of 15.98%. Over the year, TCEB successfully won 14 bids, attracted and supported 13 new tradeshows and 10 mega-size groups to take place in Thailand. Of these events, new shows from the 10 S-Curve Industries are namely: CEBIT ASEAN Thailand 2018 (Digital show from Germany); Future Energy Asia 2018 (Energy show from Singapore); Bangkok Beauty Show 2018 (Health and Beauty show from Korea); and CPhI South East Asia 2019 (Pharmaceutical and Life Science show from Europe). Besides, the bureau won bids for convention events such as; the 40th World Universities Debating Championship; the 30th Conference of the Asian Pacific Associations of the Study of the Liver, and The 10th World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC) 2019 For the next fiscal year, TCEB projected 1,419,890 overseas business travellers or 7% growth from 2018. In term of the revenue, the bureau expected that business events will generate 130,200 million baht or 5% higher than in 2018. The positive outlook is based on a growth momentum of the Thai industries supported by the national economic transformation policy. Thailand has proven its efforts in promoting the country’s business landscape as seen in ranking results from global economic indexes. The latest Logistics Performance Index by The World Bank showed that Thailand has moved up 13 places in the ranking from 45th to 32nd in 2018. The country has also jumped 20 places from 46th in 2017 to 26th in The Ease of Doing Business (EODB) Index according to A World Bank Group Flagship Report. Also, Thailand has been listed among 20 countries with high capacities in innovation development in the Global Innovation Index 2018 of the World Intellectual Property Organization. “Thailand welcomes the global business community to foster synergies with our key industries. The Thailand 4.0

Policy opens up business and professional opportunities for the country at a scale never experienced before over the past 40 years. The government has implemented measures to facilitate the business environment, promoting massive infrastructure and investment projects in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) as part of the economic transformation policy. Meanwhile, the regional cooperation policy Thailand’s Stronger Together has been strengthening the country’s economic partnership with neighbouring countries. These significant factors are widening business opportunities and expanding market access in Thailand which will also advantage the development business events industry. With the combination of the past success together with future opportunities to emerge from Thailand 4.0 and shifting demands, it is the right time for the business events industry to REDEFINE in order to make Thailand stay ahead of the competition as the in-store recipe for success will never deliver the results matching the changing policy and the dynamic business landscape,” said Mrs. Nichapa. Ms. Kanokporn Damrongkul, Director Exhibitions and Events, stated that TCEB support programs have been designed to strengthen the bridge of business, trade and investment collaboration by using exhibition as a platform that will benefit organizers, exhibitors and visitors from all over the world. For potential partners looking to launch a show in Thailand, TCEB offers a scheme called “Bidding Fund Program”. It includes subsidy for Show Pitching Program, Site Inspection program, and Partnership Program. For exhibitors, we offer “Exhibiz in Market”, a financial support program for organizations who are able to assemble a group of exhibitors to form a pavilion at an exhibition in Thailand.

Ms Kanokporn Damrongkul

For visitors, we have “ASEAN Plus 6 Privilege”, a campaign that rewards organisers of a business delegation with Incentive and accommodation that participates in business match-making at an exhibition. From India market, we are expected to have 15% increase of quality buyers from India. MICR Affairs |

Technology Section-MICE Industry “Small meetings booking platforms should integrate to improve service to everyone’s clients” Caleb Parker, Tech and Innovation Chair, HBAA

Small meetings booking platforms would all deliver a better, totally comprehensive service to clients if they were to cooperate in sharing data, collaborating on content and partnering on distribution. By providing access to a greater range of potential venues to offer in response to a search, they would enable clients to find the right venue at the right time at the best price much easier and faster. Currently too much time is wasted searching, checking availability and confirming the booking. The need for this is in response to significant growth in the small meetings* sector of the market, driven by factors such as increases in contract workers, flexible hours and remote working. As consumers, meeting organisers expect technology to enable them to find exactly what they want, when they want it easily with instant confirmation, just as they do when they book a bedroom or flight. If this formula is so well refined on the consumer side, why can’t that same fluidity be applied to business? The issue is that in the rapidly evolving small meeting bookings sector there are many players, large and small, backed by significant investment, who at any one time each have access to a considerable quantity and range of inventory. But it is only part of the total availability as, while there is some cross-over, quite a lot of the inventory is not widely shared. If it was, then bookers would be able to choose one platform that gave them the best user experience rather than have to search several platforms to access a wider choice. The benefits of this approach also extend to venues and organisers. It would provide more time for them to focus on the human aspects of event planning, not researching and booking as well as completing the booking faster. Integrated search

platforms would also allow for a more streamlined listing process for venues, with a one-time registration providing access to the maximum number of potential clients. So how would it work? By splitting the commission. Commission could be redefined as remuneration for acquiring a customer and transaction fee as remuneration for processing a booking for the venue. A 10 per cent commission, for instance, could be split with 8 per cent assigned for customer acquisition and 2 per cent paid as the transaction fee. Short of Expedia acquiring all the major providers, a connected ecosystem would be the most beneficial solution for everyone. Customers and bookers will gain instant access to information and a confirmation mechanism while venues and connected platforms will gain global distribution and more business from this new structure. While there are obstacles to be overcome and so much to debate, agree and implement, I would be so bold as to predict that within five years small meetings will be managed the same ways a transient business travel. *Small meetings are defined by HBAA as less than 30 people For more details, please visit www.hbaa.org.uk MICR Affairs |

UFI Executive Committee tracks venue development in India • Delegation visit to Delhi gives update on Indian venue projects • Joint initiatives agreed between UFI and IEIA Paris/Delhi - 26 September 2018: India’s exhibition industry is about to benefit from additional venue space, opening up further growth and development opportunities over the years to come. This September, the Executive Committee of UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, met in Delhi. Industry leaders from companies such as Informa, Reed, and Fiera Milano held meetings with venue representatives, the board of the Indian Exhibition Industry Association (IEIA), and senior industry players. “For many years, international organisers have been pushing for more and better exhibition space in India that meets our industry’s international standards,” says UFI President Corado Peraboni. “It is encouraging to see that projects in Pragati Maidan, at Greater Noida, and at Dwarka, among others, are now under construction.” According to predictions from the latest UFI/BSG report on the trade fair industry in Asia, venue space in India will increase by more than 10% by the end of 2019, driving growth of the exhibition industry as a whole in the country. India’s trade fair industry has been the best performing large market for the past five years. In 2017, net space sold went up by 11.4% from 1,065,000 sqm in 2016 to 1,187,000 sqm. Over the past five years, the Indian market has grown by 39%, which is far ahead of the regional five-year average of 27.3%. The members of the Executive Committee met L.C. Goyal, Chairman of the ITPO, owner and operator of the Pragati Maidan Exhibition Complex in Delhi. There, a new conference centre is currently under construction, and they are also rebuilding three exhibition halls with a capacity of 60,000 sqm. This phase of the project is scheduled for completion in February 2019. In neighbouring Greater Noida, the India Expo Mart shared groundbreaking plans for an expansion just days before the UFI delegation visited. CEO Sudeep Sarcar went through the development plans on site. The new hall will provide 14,000 sqm of additional exhibition space. Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the new India International Convention & Exhibition Center (IICC) in Dwarka. The convention centre and exhibition space is scheduled for completion by the end of 2019. It will be operated by Kintex, Korea’s biggest venue-management company. In addition to these projects, the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) in the south concluded an expansion project in 2017 to add 17,500 sqm of venue space. An additional 17,500 sqm will be added later in 2018. That will bring its total to 75,000 sqm, making it the largest venue in India. In the various meetings, UFI officials welcomed the ongoing projects and pledged their support, particularly in the area of education. “A successful venue needs great infrastructure and qualified staff,” comments UFI Managing Director/CEO Kai Hattendorf. “We are happy to support the development of the Indian exhibition industry through educational initiatives.” UFI leaders also used the opportunity to hold a joint meeting with the board of IEIA, the Indian Exhibition Industry Association. Both associations reflected on their already successful collaboration on research, education, and best-practice sharing, and reiterated their commitment to raising the profile of the exhibition industry as a key driver for economic growth in India. The joint session was followed by an evening of international networking with many senior representatives from Indian organisers, venues, and service providers. “UFI’s trip to Delhi has really been wonderful. It has put a spotlight on India’s push for growth in the exhibition industry, and we look forward to welcoming more international companies to the new and expanded facilities across India,” comments Ravinder Sethi, IEIA Vice-President.
