With its skilled workforce, world-class facilities and commitment to safety, Singapore can lead the way in organising business events in the new normal. Ms Katariina Rohrbach Managing Director Hannover Fairs Asia-Pacific Pte Ltd
SINGAPORE:
FORGING A NEW STANDARD FOR BUSINESS EVENTS In these extraordinary times, Singapore continues to stand as a premier business events destination connecting the world to Asia. While COVID-19 has altered the events landscape, the fundamentals that have made Singapore successful – our vibrant business environment, outstanding infrastructure and futureready workforce – remain unchanged.
Raising the bar for health and safety As international business travel resumes, you can trust that Singapore will safeguard the well-being of visiting delegates and staff. We remain committed to upholding the highest standards of health and safety and to giving all our visitors peace of mind when they come to the Lion City. Hotels, restaurants, exhibition halls and www.miceaffairs.com other establishments have adopted new Safe Management Measures, such
as social distancing and heightened cleaning of premises, to ensure reduced public health risk. Beyond these, the Singapore Government also launched SG Clean, a national mark of excellence for cleanliness, hygiene, and infection control.
Innovating for the future of business events Singapore’s events industry is also implementing unique solutions to meet the emerging demands of a new era of business travel. Local companies are reinventing themselves – from enhancing digital offerings to developing forwardlooking concepts for hybrid and virtual events. For example, in June, homegrown event organiser Web in Travel (WiT) engaged more than 750 tourism business leaders Vol 3 Issue 3 to discuss the future of the industry in a global virtual summit. During the dinner

break, WiT sent curated care packages to Singapore-based attendees and later even held a virtual dance party. With this mindset of continuous innovation, it is no wonder that Singapore was recently named the world’s most competitive economy for the second consecutive year (IMD World Competitiveness Ranking, 2020). Singapore is where great minds converge, connect and create the future of business. Plan your next business event at VisitSingapore.com/MICE.

Interview MA:Congratulation on your new role as UFI President. New Role with new and extra responsibilities in unprecedented time. What would be your key focus area as UFI President ? AV:Thank you very much. Indeed it is an honour and a privilege to lead UFI, the global association for exhibitions. UFI brings together those who build, maintain and support the world’s market places trade show organisers, venue owners and operators, service providers, and national as well as international associations of the exhibitions sector. We live in extraordinary times when countries are facing economic challenges and global disruptions created by the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. It is extremely crucial to keep confidence level high and spearhead policy advocacy in a focused manner with government and other stakeholders. Primarily four areas that I am most passionate about as we get on to tackle the challenges presented before us are Resilience (which is the characteristic of our exhibition industry), Leadership (purpose driven leadership), Technology (enhanced use of digital technology), and Community (having a deeper connection with community), and the impact these will create 11
11
on our local and global environment. These four focus areas aren’t a recent focal point, they have set the broad directions for several of UFI’s initiatives over these years, some of them ongoing and some long-term. I’ll be endeavouring to drive this to its next level. MA: UFI being a global body of exhibition stakeholders is getting an Indian President for the first time, what does that mean for Indian Exhibition Industry? AV:Europe, America and some countries in Asia have been examples of what exhibitions can do for generating revenues. Exhibitions held in these regions have uplifted various industry sectors and boosted the economy. Indian exhibition industry is evolving, year-on-year there has been a steady growth which is perhaps evident from the increasing exhibition portfolios and entry of new players into the market due to which exhibitions are getting more organised. I would during my tenure as UFI President take this to the next level. UFI board, by selecting an Indian to head its initiatives, has provided Indian exhibition industry to become more vibrant, stronger and get its due recognition at the global level.

Vol 3 Issue 3
MA: For Indian Exhibition Industry, right infrastructure for shows is always a challenge. Any plans by UFI Indian President in that direction? AV: Exhibition infrastructure in India has undergone a transformation in the last decade. The industry has been growing significantly with new shows being organised in various industry sectors by domestic and foreign players. Also, central and state governments, considering the importance of exhibitions for trade and economic development, are building exhibition centres in partnership with private companies. As an international body, UFI will guide and work closely with the government and trade associations for further strengthening this move. MA: What’s the key message from the desk of UFI President for Global Exhibition Industry? AV: Exhibition must maintain its patience levels, stay strong and show resilience in face of adversities besides following a purpose driven leadership to sail through in tough times.

GLOBAL DMC PARTNERS SEVENTH ANNUAL CONNECTION
VIRTUALLY ADDRESSES INDUSTRY CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES 400 meeting planners and DMCs gathered virtually to discuss issues pertaining to the pandemic, peer-to-peer learning and insights from industry leaders Global DMC Partners, the leading global network of independently owned destination management companies (DMCs) and creative event experts, has successfully concluded its seventh annual, and first virtual, Connection event. This highly qualified group of nearly 400 attendees, including approximately 300 meeting planners, international and domestic DMCs, and the Global DMC Partners team convened online on November 9 and 10 to discuss current issues pertaining to the pandemic, identify ways for the industry to overcome challenges together as it rebounds, and experience unique virtual activities organized by GDP DMCs. The event was presented in partnership with Total Brand Experience (TBX), a virtual, hybrid, and live strategic event management and production agency.
“Even though we greatly missed being able to speak with our clients and DMC Partners in person this year, our new virtual setting allowed us to connect with one another in a unique way,”
www.miceaffairs.com
says Global DMC Partners President and CEO, Catherine Chaulet. “In addition to providing a platform for education and best-practice sharing, we gave attendees the chance to engage with one another and our DMCs through an array of global virtual experiences, such as learning yoga in Vienna or rediscovering inner happiness the Costa Rican way.” Chaulet kicked off the event with a keynote address that highlighted valuable insights from Global DMC Partners’ most recent Meetings & Events Pulse Survey and the implications of the findings for

MICE planners. There were 447 respondents from the meetings and events industry, with 90 percent being meeting planners. Key highlights of the findings included: Over 90 percent reported that some or all of their 2020 events have been postponed to 2021. Nearly three-quarters of planners are moving their face-to-face events to virtual or hybrid in 2021. While most respondents predict that their face-to-face events will resume in the first half of 2021, many are planning to include a virtual option with their live event, indicating that 2021 will be a hybrid year. 82 percent believe a vaccine is the most important factor in bringing back face-to-face events. 16

The conference agenda also included general sessions with a panel composed of industry leaders discussing the continued impact of the global pandemic on this trillion-dollar industry. Experts shared innovative strategies and ideas that MICE planners should consider as the industry continues to adapt and embrace more virtual and hybrid events as we head into 2021. Peer-to-peer breakout discussions provided a more intimate setting for meeting professionals to reconnect with one another and share best practices in today’s COVID-19 world. Discussion topics were determined by each group, and included best practices for virtual events and for hybrid/in-person events, contracting with vendors, new cancellation/force majeure terms, event technology, and creating unique attendee experiences in a virtual world. Attendees also heard from several inspiring and motivational speakers, including

Lucy Bloom, an award-winning leader, businesswoman, consultant and author from Australia. An expert in how to do business differently, Bloom shared why fun should be a factor in strategic plans, why kindness and optimism feed the bottom line and how ordinary people do the extraordinary. Attendees were also encouraged to unleash their personal leadership power, courage and grit needed to take their lives to the next level by Vernice “FlyGirl” Armour, a former United States Marine Corps officer who was the first African-American female naval aviator in the Marine Corps and the first African-American female combat pilot in the U.S. Armed Forces. Unique to this year’s conference were all-new virtual destination experiences presented by GDP’s DMC partners. These interactive online activities brought a taste of the respective destinations into participants’ homes while showcasing how DMCs are

At each booth, attendees could learn more about each DMC and their destinations by viewing resources like destination overview videos and informational brochures. For those who wanted to connect even further, they could speak directly with each Exhibitor through instant chat messaging or live video call.

AIM Group realised the “FIMP House” an unprecedented virtual congress with a human touch An immersive 3D platform reproduced a real life house which welcomed the paediatricians for their annual congress. The original format and setting provided great personalisation and interaction. “With open arms... at FIMP House”:
a unique and unprecedented experience for medical-scientific congresses offered the possibility of transforming the need to convert the annual congress in digital mode into the opportunity to meet in a new way, keeping both participation and involvement high. After many years of fruitful collaboration, AIM Group International designed and organized the project together with the FIMP (Italian Federation of Paediatricians). “We needed to re-design the XIV National Scientific Congress of the Italian Federation of Family Paediatricians (FIMP), which should have been held live on Lake Maggiore (Italy). When re-planning the event online, we put the maximum effort to make the most of the opportunities offered by the virtual environment in terms of imagination, participant interaction and multimedia” explains Francesca Manzani, business manager of AIM Group International. “The client didn’t want to lose the human touch and spontaneity typical of their annual live conferences. scratch, forgetting the format and methods typical of the traditional in person event, which gave life to an original event, tailor made for the community of family paediatricians”. Some of the main features of the virtual congress, celebrated over 3 days from 15 th to 17 th October, were: • A 3D immersive setting. The house, reproduced with a sophisticated and appealing visual, allowed participants to experience a pleasant visit, with clear flows and content that was easy to find and consult. • As simple as a visit to a friend’s house. The living room was the heart of the house, where participantscould move and find parallel sessions in different rooms.

The visit was simple: by clicking on the TVmonitor the broadcasting of the sessions started and there was an active chat box for questions. • Personalized use of content. Each participant could freely move among the rooms and the garden. Each visit was personal and unique. Every area proposed different topics: in the Kitchen: nutrition, vegetarian cuisine or diabetes; in the Bedroom: neuroscience and sleep disorders; in the Study:infantile neurodevelopment, hypotonic children, gastroenterology and the appropriateness of antibiotics; in the Garden: child neuropsychiatry and dermatology. • Meeting the Sponsors in the garden. In the living room, paintings on the walls showed the names ofthe Sponsors who participants could meet in the garden. From the panoramic view of the exhibitionarea, participants could choose which booths to visit. They could also consult brochures, watchpromotional videos, click on external links and start a direct contact form or a video chat with sponsorstaff. “We are really satisfied with the results achieved through this original digital event which is an outstanding example of how 25

event professionals can contribute to design and realise effective and memorable events, even in virtual format” outlines Patrizia Semprebene Buongiorno, Vice President, AIM Group International. “During the last few months, our role has partially changed since we cannot realise in-person events, we must shift to the digital world. But it is clear that our long experience in knowledge sharing, our deep understanding of medical and scientific associations’ needs, our relationships with sponsors and our expertise on delegate engagement, means that we are strategic at finding creative and effective solutions that guarantee the event success”. Satisfaction from the Scientific Association was undoubtedly high, as President of FIMP dr. Paolo Biasci states: “We welcomed many participants into our virtual home and there was active participation and great interaction, with many questions and discussions among the speakers. It was a good congress and we received great appreciation. This year, thanks and congratulations are particularly warranted, because everything was new and everything went well. A big thank you to the wonderful team at AIM Group, a great team that has been assisting us for some time and will continue to support us in events to come”.

By enhancing our studio with MR technology, event planners will now have an industry-ready solution to capture the attention and imagination of their virtual and in-person audiences. This will further increase delegate engagement and drive greater content and idea generation among key communities. It has also given us the opportunity to work with technology partners to add value for our clients and their events. This is the future of storytelling and we hope to continue inspiring the industry, driving digital transformation and elevating hybrid event experiences,” said Paul Town, Senior Vice President, Resort Operations, Marina Bay Sands.

Since early October, the integrated resort has been the proud host of several key Singapore hybrid pilot MICE events including WiT Experience Week 2020 (1 Oct) and the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) (26-28 Oct). The multi-functional studio has also been used to inspire other communities including the music industry. Singapore looks ahead to the future of travel
SingapoReimagine will serve as an inclusive platform for the global and local tourism communities to share ideas on how to reset and revive tourism. The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) announced a new initiative to reimagine travel for Singapore and the rest of the world, by sparking conversations, stories and ideas to collectively shape the future of our sector.
Called SingapoReimagine, this platform will kick off with “Reimagine Travel - Global Conversations” , a series of forums around the world to catalyse discussions on how to reshape global travel. For a start, STB will share our learnings on how the public and private sectors have come together to create new possibilities for our visitors. As part of the forums, global partners will be invited to share knowledge and exchange ideas, with the first one in Singapore next year before being hosted in other parts of the world. Closer to home, STB will also roll out “Reimagine Travel in Singapore” , a series of engagements with passionate members of the local community and tourism partners to co-create ideas and spur the renewal of Singapore tourism. This complements the SingapoRediscovers www.miceaffairs.com
domestic campaign, which encourages locals to rediscover and reconnect with Singapore’s hidden gems and experiences. Both initiatives will be launched in 2021, and more details will be announced in due course.
STB Chief Executive Mr Keith Tan said, “COVID-19 is the biggest crisis we have ever faced in travel and tourism. But it also offers us an opportunity to reset and revive our industries in ways that we never imagined was possible a year ago. The journey to reimagine travel has already started in Singapore, and we want to continue this journey with those whose voices matter – our community in Singapore, and our partners here and around the world. We look forward to co-creating ideas and strategies with all of them, to make travel better.” Increased traveller confidence to travel While it will take time

for mass international travel to resume, there are promising signs of future demand. In Singapore, a Brand Health Study across 14 markets , conducted by STB’s appointed market research company Ipsos in August 2020, revealed that leisure and BTMICE (Business Travel and Meetings, Incentive Travel, Conventions and Exhibitions) travellers maintain a strong perception of Singapore being a safe destination to visit, despite COVID-19. According to the study, confidence in travelling overseas for leisure and business has been steadily increasing, with 76% of leisure travellers and 90% of BTMICE travellers indicating they are likely to travel in the next 12 months, if possible. “We are extremely encouraged by the findings of our Brand Health Study, which points to positive traveller confidence in Singapore and is a broad indication of market readiness and appetite for travel. STB is confident in Singapore’s attractiveness as a leading business and leisure destination, and we will gradually commence our market

Destination News engagement efforts in line with the health situation and prevailing travel policies,” Mr Tan added.
A reimagined Singapore for visitors
SingapoReimagine is also about creating a new standard for travel. Over the past few months, Singapore’s tourism sector has shown both resilience and ingenuity, to meet the evolving needs of visitors and ensure that every aspect of their experience is safe, yet delightful.
Reimagine Safety -
STB has been working closely with industry partners to elevate health and safety measures based on new national standards, so that future visitors can enjoy the city’s refreshed experiences with added peace of mind. Such initiatives include the SG Clean Quality mark, which requires tourism establishments to adhere to stringent levels of hygiene and sanitisation as well as Safe Management Measures (SMMs).
Reimagine Technology -
Technology is at the heart of those efforts. From the use of contactless technology and cleaning robots, to the TraceTogether app and token (the world’s first national digital contact tracing tool), Singapore aims to make travel safer, yet seamless and efficient. Technology is also creating new possibilities for our tourism offerings. Virtual experiences, hybrid meeting venues and events, and even robot baristas are now offered, offering new ways for us to delight our visitors without compromising on safety.
Reimagine City & Nature Looking further ahead, Singapore aims to be the world’s most 29
29
sustainable urban destination. That is why we are investing in new products and pilots that take into account the needs of the community and the environment. In fact, we are on track to achieve this vision with nature-based concepts in places of interest such as Jewel Changi Airport and Gardens By the Bay. Other examples also include our ambition to transform Singapore into a City In Nature over the next decade, developing the Jurong Lake District Tourism Development to be a world-class lifestyle destination that features the best of sustainability, innovation, nature and science, and reimagining the Mandai Precinct as a world-class eco-themed nature cluster with the introduction of new wildlife attractions as well as eco-friendly accommodation offerings
to drive the anticipation for travel in Singapore. STB will also use SingapoReimagine as a platform to step up marketing Singapore as a MICE destination known for Safety, Innovation, and Trust. This is to rebuild short to mid-term consideration of Singapore among MICE event planners, through media partnerships, digital and social channels, as well as increased business development efforts.
SingapoReimagine as a platform for stories As travel gradually resumes, the story of these new experiences – for both leisure and MICE – will be told through SingapoReimagine. We will be working with international and in-market media, key influencers as well as content and trade partners to engage our audiences in key markets

Asia Pacific’s first international travel tradeshow Travel Revive hosted in Singapore TravelRevive, powered by ITB Asia and Singapore Tourism Board (STB), concluded 26th November at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre. Leading the way with rigorous protocols and innovative solutions for the end-to-end visitor journey, TravelRevive was the first pilot tradeshow to trial the newly developed ‘hybrid event’ tradeshow prototype for safe business events, safe itineraries, and digital enablers in Singapore. This was part of a public-private collaboration under the Emerging Stronger Taskforce (EST)’s SingaporeTogether Alliance for Action (AfA) on Enabling Safe and Innovative Visitor Experiences. TravelRevive is the first international travel tradeshow to take place physically in Asia Pacific during COVID-19, with both local and foreign attendees and exhibitors. A total of close to 1,000 local and international attendees came together onsite for two days to exchange ideas, bridge knowledge gaps, and reimagine the future of travel. Event News Changi Airport Group (CAG), under the auspices of the AfA on Enabling Safe and Innovative Visitor Experiences has also developed a working prototype called the Safe Travel Concierge (STC). This is an online tool to help travellers manage their visits by customizing a travel checklist of pre-entry requirements to fulfill before entering Singapore, from the SafeTravel Pass application to the swab tests conducted at the airport. The STC will also help guests remain in their cohorts at all times, including when attending activities as part of their safe itineraries after TravelRevive. The AfA on Enabling Safe and Innovative Visitor Experiences will study the findings and data from TravelRevive to refine the safe management measures and best practices for MICE events and leisure travel progressively. Speaking about the initiative, GB Srithar, Regional Director, India, Middle East & South Asia (IMESA), Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said, “TravelRevive has been an important step for us in the gradual, cautious re-opening of the MICE space. It was among the first hybrid events, with international delegates’ presence, in The Asia Pacific and hosted in Singapore under the “new normal” in the Covid-present times. Despite the various complexities and challenges posed by the pandemic, we are happy that we could pilot this tradeshow in a newly developed hybrid events format. It brought together foreign and in-Singapore delegates under strict measures in hygiene, safe distancing, travel and physical capacity limits. We look forward for such more events, as cross-border travel restrictions ease. Interview
In Conversation with Vikash Samota, Founder & CEO, MultiTV
Q1: Virtual Events are new norm now. How is the industry adaptability to this new normal? If we look back, a year ago, real world events which facilitated physical interactions and networking, were the default norm. In the last eleven months, the events industry has been turned over its head, completely with ‘Virtual’ becoming the only secure and safe platform to conduct events. Brands, enterprises, and events agencies are adopting online events platforms for different activations and engagements in recent times. Industry players are overhauling their offerings by undergoing virtual remodelling. They are fast tracking integration of cutting-edge technology to enable an online ecosystem for events and exhibitions. For instance, over ten events agencies have deployed BeLIVE, our all-in-one live online events platform in the last 6 months. Our flagship product BeLIVE www.miceaffairs.com
acts as a digital enabler for events agencies and ensures agile brand connect with stakeholders. The industry is fast-moving towards this new normal which presents a wide horizon of possibilities in terms of creative innovations and improvisations.
and scalability, it gives more value for both organizers and attendees. The impact of Hybrid Events is easy to measure and analyse, thus, providing better clarity on the overall ROI.
Q 2: Lifeline of virtual events is Live, till the time you are locked inside home. When industry starts moving, virtual will disappear. How true the statement is?
Q3:Â Monetization of virtual events is a challenge?
Virtual events are here to stay. With technology enabling the event industry during the pandemic, it will likely continue to be a mainstay in the post-pandemic world as well. The primary reason is that virtual events are more cost and time-efficient.They also address the limitations of geographic boundaries. The far future of events is hybrid. In the future, events will follow an integrated approach of on-ground and on-screen elements. It will be an amalgamation of the best of both worlds. Attendees will have a choice to either attend in-person or experience the event virtually. With geographically larger audience reach

Taking events online does not mean that opportunities for revenue generations have been limited. Virtual events are fast evolving to integrate value-added solutions for customers. There are multiple ways through which events can be monetized by deploying BeLIVE. Parents were the Creator, their love was the Nurturer. Values walked along as a Protector. acquaintances made me a Learner, and Work prepared to become a Performer! Sustaining the withering and frowning, the hardships that once looked alarming. The breeze then changed the direction, brought me into the world of action. Focus shifted to expansion and retention, MICE came in life from two thousand and seven. Desires and dreams started measuring the goal, accomplishing them made me whole. Memories flash back into the same door, 1 single file achieved a GOP of 1 crore. People say, milestones are achieved goals, pursued with commitment, one such was converting file turnover into profit statement. Certifications, trophies, incentives, promotions, they all saluted when I was roaring, tears rolled down on finishing 100 day’s scheme, for the Car I was dreaming.
