CONSE RVAT ION OF ELEP HAN TS

T

he conservation of Elephants in Kenya has received a major boost after the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife announced that it had mobilised 16.5 million shillings towards this initiative against the target of 100 million within the financial year 2021 – 2022. This announcement was made today during the inaugural Magical Kenya Tembo Naming Festival held at the Amboseli National Park, Kajiado County. During the event, corporates and individuals were allowed to adopt and name select elephants after donating funds towards the initiative, which is aimed at boosting conservation efforts of the endangered species. The elephants were adopted and named during the event which was officiated by the Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Hon. Najib Balala. The CS lauded the initiative as a move towards the inclusion of the public in conservation as well as providing enough resources for the protection of Elephants in Kenya. The elephants to were named include baby elephants (2020 – 2021), the big tuskers and twins.

“This is certainly a great milestone for Kenya, this initiative that will go a long way in ensuring that Elephants are protected in Kenya not only for ourselves, but also for the future generations. We all have a role to play in conservation and I therefore commend the team that has worked tirelessly to ensure that this is a success. I urge other like-minded individuals and organizations to join us in this noble initiative now and in the future,” said CS Hon Balala He also noted that the namers in the 2021 Magical Kenya Elephant Naming Festival had set a president that the ministry would be working towards achieving every year going forward. “We have raised 16.5 million so far this year and we plan to hit our target at the close of the financial year. roving this every year; I congratulate all the namers and assure them that the funds will be used to ensure that our majestic elephants are well conserved. We want to look at issues concerning human Wildlife conflict, tracking of the elephants though collaring as well as construction of electric fences and community engagement among other issues” On her part, Kenya Tourism Board CEO Dr. Betty Radier thanked the sponsors for embracing the initiative, noting the huge role conservation plays in tourism and by extension supporting livelihoods.

“I thank the namers and those who contributed for embracing and being part of this initiative. Conservation of our wildlife resources remains key for us to ensure that future generations enjoy our country’s heritage, natural resources and the incredible species that live within it. With our tourism www.miceaffairs.com TRAVBUZZNEWS

being largely dependent on our natural resources including wildlife, it is important that we all ensure they are well protected and maintained. By so doing, we will ensure that tourism continues playing its key role in spurring the economy and supporting the many livelihoods that depend on it,” said Dr Radier KWS Director General Brigadier (retired) John Waweru said that the goal of the festival is to secure a future for elephants and their habitats in peaceful co- existence with humans while providing benefits and for posterity. “As revealed during the recently concluded Wildlife Census, there is an urgent need to conserve our wildlife, especially the species classified as endangered or threatened. While it is important to note that we have made huge progress in this, the continued loss of ecosystem and rising human-elephant conflicts continue to derail our efforts in this regard,” Said Waweru The population of African savannah elephants has plummeted by at least 60% over the past 50 years, resulting in their classification as & endangered in the latest update of the IUCN & danger list The Amboseli ecosystem is home to

about 1,800 elephants with the highest population found in the Tsavo national parks standing at 14,000. In recent years, elephant poaching has reduced significantly leading to a surge in elephant populations in Kenya. According to the Kenya Wildlife Census Report, Kenya is home to a total of 36,280 elephants, representing a 21 percent growth from 2014, when poaching was at its peak. This increase has been thanks to the sustained government crackdown on poaching and illegal ivory trade. However, the report also notes that human-elephant conflict has increased in many regions within the country as a result of the increasing loss of habitat and competition in land use. Through the Tembo Naming Festival which will be an annual event, the government seeks to address these challenges with the hope of increasing the numbers of these species.

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

TAKING OFF IN THAILAND The Sky is Yours!

At present, Thailand is all set to welcome worldwide travelers to our Sandbox provinces now with reduced quarantine nights. And recently, Thailand has warmly opened arms for *fully vaccinated foreign arrivals with pre-flight negative test results from 46 countries, including China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, UAE, UK, USA just to name a few, to enter the Kingdom by air without mandatory quarantine, from this 1 November onwards. The list will be expanded from this coming 1 December and further enhanced to an extensive list from 1 January 2022. Effective from 16 October, the Thai government has given green light for event organization to take place under “COVID Free Setting” protocols, aiming to stimulate the broader economy. By joining forces with the private sector, the government is planning a huge extravaganza to celebrate the reopening. This substantially demonstrates

www.miceaffairs.com TRAVBUZZNEWS

the Kingdom’s preparation to welcome international business travellers following the easing of quarantine rules and pandemic control measures, and speedy vaccination rollout. It is a great opportunity for Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) to signal to international organizers that Thailand is ready to stage global trade shows from November 2021 onwards. Obviously, COVID has had a significant impact on all of us, but Thai exhibition stakeholders have adapted their strategies and tactics to speed their recovery and their ability to be a catalyst for recovery and reinvention for the markets. Venue operators across the country not only have strictly followed TCEB’s “New Normal” certified standards, but also have started to market and promote “new normal” event organization through TCEB’s subsidy and an

introduction of innovation technology such as virtual inspection and online reservation system for exhibition venues. This September and October in Bangkok also see a virtual edition of major trade shows including SUBCON Thailand, Medlab Asia and Asia Health, Thaifex, V-Connect Asia, LED Expo Thailand – Smartech ASEAN, Building Construction Technology Expo. The launch of virtual and digital solutions using cutting-edge technology demonstrates the resilience of Thailand's exhibition industry in challenging times.

ASEAN is the third-largest in Asia, powered by a population of **677.4 million and a fast-growing economy. Thanks to the strategic geographic location, ongoing mega-investment, state-of-the-art exhibition venues, well-connected infrastructure, business-friendly policies and talented human capitals, Thailand is not only the first choice of cross-border travel destination of ASEAN residents which gives the country an edge to serve as the conduit for regional businesses, but also the door to ASEAN for international exhibition stakeholders. Exclusively complemented with TCEB’s 360-degree “Re-Energizing Exhibitions” campaign, 70 new international trade shows are in the pipeline until 2022. ASEAN is rising with plentiful opportunities. Thai exhibition stakeholders are not only ready to showcase their capability and readiness but also keen to collaborate with international organizers whereas TCEB counts for global partnership to re-energize the exhibition industry together again.

The festival takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar , thus the exact date of the festival changes every year. The word “loy” means to float, while “krathongs” are small baskets traditionally made from banana tree wood and carefully folded banana leaves, each containing sticks of incense, candles, and an offering of a few coins. On the night of the full moon, People in Thailand float their krathong on a river, canal, or a pond, making a wish as they do so. The festival may originate from an ancient rural ritual of paying respect to Goddess of water, while the krathongs floating away symbolizes letting go of all one hatred, anger, and defilements. COVID-19 vaccine guide for travellers to Thailand Thailand currently approves 8 COVID-19 vaccines, and everyone 18 years of age and older should get fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before travelling to the Kingdom, while rules differ for those under 18 years. Here’s an update to our guide to COVID-19 vaccines for international travellers to Thailand.

International travellers, including returning Thais and foreign residents, who are above 18 years of age should get fully vaccinated for COVID-19 with a vaccine approved by Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) or the World Health Organisation (WHO) no less than 14 days before their travel date.
