Verwall View
I
n this the seventh issue of the magazine, entitled VERWALL VIEW, Florian Werner documents not only the desire for work aimed at continuity and engagement with contemporary art, but during this season also seeks to deepen his involvement in visual art. VERWALL VIEW is also most importantly the title of the current winter exhibition, to be found now for the first time in nearly all of the rooms in the hotel. Led by Brigitte Kowanz, students at the University of Applied Arts of the class for Transmedia Art examine the place, its functions and its physical presence in an exposed scenic position. The artistic interventions are the results of a study course that has run for over a year on the theme of “site- and space specific interventions”. The works extend throughout the hotel, starting outside, and continuing into the reception area, the various corridors, function rooms and the individual bedrooms. Fundamental questions are formulated as to the function of art outside its own context, the potential for approaching and appropriating particular spatial situations and places as well as the issues intrinsic to art, such as the autonomy of an art object. Within this context the works provide an insight into the structure of a hotel and also focus on procedures and laws that appear prescribed, and therefore remain unquestioned. In this respect the VERWALL VIEW project naturally blends into a series of artworks – space-specific-interventions – that now runs as a thread throughout the hotel and which is beginning to change and define its identity. To put it another way: the hotel is reshaping itself into a field of experimentation for contemporary art strategies and actions. This impression is strengthened and confirmed by the view from the window of the building site in front of the hotel, which represents a structural extension of Florian Werner’s art activities. The construction of “arlberg1800” will provide a large, independent art venue, probably one of the highest.
The magazine not only lists the current programme that changes with every season, presenting the latest artist-in-residence – it also serves as a guide to all of the permanent interventions and fixed hotel activities.

Eleven artistic interventions by students from the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Transmedia Art class, Brigitte Kowanz Concept, project supervisor: Eva Chytilek
The department of Transmedia Art focuses primarily on artistic concepts and projects based on space and time, allowing as much scope as possible for experimental approaches. Transmedia Art is concerned with transdisciplinary initiatives in the conceptualisation and implementation of art. It involves a critical study of theoretical and practical methods and also investigates the communicative, performative and processual aspects of art. We work with a

Hilde Fuchs’s artwork is situated at the intersection of theatre work, performance and visual art. Her interventions make selective use of forms of everyday life and are embedded in social spaces, negotiating issues of marginalised social groups (among others, she has worked with punks and homeless people). The term “social sculpture” in the best sense sums up the essence of Hilde Fuchs’s works.

Unity of form and material are rewritten by Isabelle von Schilcher’s works using an old technique. The movement of the graphite pencil leads to the form-giving layers of the wood beneath merging almost symbiotically with the surface shimmer of pure carbon. On their first encounter with these works, the viewers must look very closely if they are not to be tricked by the deceptive unity of material and drawing.
