atton Shopping Village, near Warwick, which has seen some new shops open and big changes to its appearance over the summer, has launched its Christmas Shopping Festival.

The same architects who revamped Hatton Arms have put their magic touch into creating that special mix of ‘contemporary and traditional’, which has become such a feature of the pub.

FAT GRAFTING The hottest topic in cosmetic surgery Vik Vijh

F

at grafting is the transference of fat from one area to another. This allows us to permanently add volume to areas where it is lacking. Originally it was used to rebuild breasts after breast cancer. To the amazement of many surgeons it not only gave a permanent increase in volume to the breasts, but also seemed to improve the quality of the skin. Research ensued which showed that human fat contains huge quantities of stem cells, which are thought to help regenerate all body tissues. Interest grew and soon we were performing modest breast augmentations using fat grafting alone, without the need for silicone breast implants.

Up until recently, the concept of the perfect female silhouette had always involved liposuction alone, now we could use that self same fat we were sucking out to augment areas that needed it. Buttock augmentation was next on the hit list, with patients asking to have liposuction to their tummies and thighs with fat grafting to their buttocks and breasts.

The ultimate in body recycling was born, with patients thinking of their fat as “their fat”, not to be discarded, but to be carefully re-used to their advantage.

Fighting the ravages of age was next to be tackled by the new wonder treatment. Face lifts have been used for many years to reverse the descent of facial skin, but they failed to

address the gauntness that comes with age due to the loss of fat volume from our faces.

Many artificial fillers have been marketed to fulfill this need, however, fat grafting seemed the perfect solution. It is subtle and leaves no discernable marks. You cannot have an allergic reaction or reject your own fat and after an initial loss of 20% to 50% of the grafted fat, the remainder should be permanent. Many surgeons believe the stem cells in the grafted fat help rejuvenate the facial skin. In excess of 00 hundred people have visited the centre for a variety of reasons; from needing assistance with their hearing problems to getting custom made hearing protection, or wax removed from their ears.

The hearing centre prides itself on the fact that they offer the latest technology in hearing systems to help their clients get connected back into the world of sound. There are instruments today that sit deeply in the ear canal that cannot be seen, as well as instruments that have a high level of technology for those people who have a demanding listening lifestyle which enhances their everyday living experience. Depression and isolation is often one of the main symptoms of people not being able to hear well. M

y little boy is starting to lose his baby teeth. That’s natural and not an issue as he’s got his adult teeth coming through.

I told him he’s got another tooth on its way but he asked me the question, “What if I lose the next one”? Unless he’s very unlucky that’s not likely to happen until old age. But for 27 million or more adults in the UK missing teeth is an issue.

Missing teeth can have a dramatic impact on selfconfidence and quality of life. Thankfully there are a number of treatment options available to restore your teeth both aesthetically and functionally.

What causes tooth loss?

There are many reasons why you might lose a tooth including accidents, infection and decay, but the most common cause is gum disease. Gum disease (Periodontal Disease) destroys the bone that normally supports the teeth and when this is gone teeth become wobbly and can be lost. In severe cases many or all of the teeth can be lost.

What are the consequences of tooth loss?

Many people don’t consider losing a tooth to be a problem, especially when it isn’t one at the front of the mouth, however the long term consequences of tooth loss can be significant.

Following tooth loss, the remaining teeth may tilt and shift into the gaps resulting in food trapping in the spaces which can in turn lead to an increased risk of gum disease and tooth decay. When many teeth are missing, your facial muscles can sag which may affect your speech and appearance.

Tooth replacement options If you have missing teeth you may choose to do nothing and leave the space empty. Alternatively, you may want to have your missing teeth replaced. There are several different treatment options available.

Partial and Complete Dentures

are removable and can be used to replace some (partial) or all (complete) of your teeth. Dentures can take a little while to adapt to but can help you to feel confident when eating, speaking and smiling.

They can also help to prevent undesirable tooth movement after tooth loss. However, even the best dentures won’t feel like your own teeth.

Bridges literally span the gap between one or more missing teeth and there are a number of different bridge designs. The two natural teeth either side of the gap are specially prepared and reduced to receive crowns. The two crowns are cemented in place and are permanently linked by artificial teeth known as pontics, thus bridging the gap. For some, bridges can offer a cheaper alternative to dental implants and provide a very natural appearance.

ovember may be over but that doesn’t mean we have to say goodbye to all the facial hair we’ve been enjoying over the last month. If you’re digging your new ‘tache, then treat yourself to a new facial hair routine, complete with skincare and styling.

Carl Nash at Brown’s Parlour, Moseley, has devised the perfect step-by step guide to a traditional wet shave, perfect for those who are rocking a moustache this Christmas.

Step 1 – Oil slick This is a must. Invest in a pre-shave oil – think King of Shaves or L’Oreal Men Expert – and massage into skin for a deep, nourishing prep. Oil moisturises and lubricates the skin throughout the shave, giving superlative razor performance and glide.

Step 2 – Hot towel Just a flannel is perfect but if you really want to treat your skin, try a muslin cloth. Run your flannel under a hot tap, ring it out and hold the towel over your face for a minute. The hot towel method opens your pores, lifts the hair and softens the skin ready for the blade.

Step 3 – Lather up The real shaving enthusiast will love a badger hair brush for the next step (pssst....this would make a great Christmas present). Leave your brush in hot water for at least a minute. Dab your brush into your shaving cream or gel and apply to your face in a paintbrush motion. A badger hair brush will lift the hair follicles; producing a thicker, more luxurious lather.

Pull the skin tight as you apply the razor and shave with the grain of growth. If you want a closer shave, then go against the grain, but this is more likely to lead to razor burn. The most important thing to get right is the pressure, take your time and treat your face gently.

Step 5 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Hot towel Repeat the clean hot towel step for another minute.

This will give your face another cleanse. Rinse your face with cold water to close pores.

Step 6 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Post-shave balm If you have any nicks or razor burn, try an alum block â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an all-natural astringent. Pat your face dry and apply a post-shave balm. A eucalyptus-based balm has anti-bacterial properties and will make your skin feel refreshed.

t’s the festive party season and it might lead you to wake up mid-week not feeling and definitely not looking your best. Red tired eyes, blotchy dull looking skin and dry lips are all signs you’ve overdone it the night before. Here are my quick steps to faking a healthy glow and awake eyes at least until you can make it back to your bed.

Moisturiser and primer are key to plumping up and prepping your tired de-hydrated skin. I love the {comfort zone} Hydramemory Comfort Cream to sooth and keep you hydrated all day. An absolute staple in my kit and personal makeup bag is the {comfort zone} Glorious Skin Lifting serum, which I use as a primer. It temporarily fills in fine lines and wrinkles and helps to stimulate collagen and relax the face. A real miracle worker.

Keep the skin looking dewy and fresh by using a tinted moisturiser. I love the Laura Mercier range as they give just the right amount of coverage. Hiding your dark circles is key and I’ve found the Clinique Airbrush concealer is one of the best.

Next to eyes and it’s best to keep your eye makeup simple and long lasting. Avoid brown tones as it will only enhance any redness. I like to use a dark grey eye pencil right into the lash line to define and open the eyes. Curl your lashes and use lots of mascara to make you look further awake. Waterproof is a good option if your eyes have a tendency to water and sting. Brush through your brows and softly fill in any gaps.

Finally your face needs some colour to fake that healthy rested glow. Blending a Maybelline cream blusher in a soft pink or peach right on to the apples of your cheeks will brighten your eyes and and skin. I love the ELF Luscious Liquid Lipsticks which are really more like glosses but non-sticky – they’ll keep your pout looking plumped and hydrated and add that key pop of colour.

Stay hydrated all day with lots of water and herbal tea and get home as soon as you can for some comfort food and your sofa.

’m not UK Champagne Ambassador 2010 for nothing. I love the stuff. I love tasting it, talking about it and writing about it, but most of all, of course, I love drinking it. It transforms an ordinary day into an occasion. It lifts the spirits, it invigorates the palate.

For many though, it is a bottle they might buy infrequently as its price is above the usual wine spend, but about this time of year is just the sort of occasion lots of you will be looking to buy champagne. Lucky for us, it is also the time that lots of champagnes are on offer so you don’t have to spend quite as much and you can grab a bargain.

Aldi’s Veuve Monsigny Brut won’t break the bank any time of the year at only £12.99 and is more than acceptable in quality. Tesco Finest 1er Cru, £19.99, but often down to £15.99, is also a winner. Waitrose’s own label champagnes and the Co-op’s Pionniers have all graced my table at one time or another but if you feel you must have a brand name, my favourites of the more easy available are Ruinart, Bollinger, Gosset, Pol Roger and Taittinger. Check out your local wine merchant for these and whilst there ask about vintage champagne and special cuvées.

If you prefer something easier on the wallet as well as on the palate there are plenty of alternative sparkling wines you can choose from. Cava from Spain, made by the same time-consuming labour- intensive method as its French counterpart, though with different grapes and with usually substantially less ageing. Quality is variable, as is the price, though these you can buy with confidence: Lidl’s Arestal Cava Brut has just won a Quality Food Award and the Cava Heretat El Padruell from M&S at £7.99 is fine. Top names such as Cordoníu and Freixenet also make reliably good fizz.

Prosecco, hugely popular just now, is a lighter wine than both Cava and champers, lower in alcohol too, and if you want wine with soft bubbles and gentle flavours then this may be the sparkler for you. For the more serious proseccos, make sure the label displays the word Valdobbiadene, the best area of production.

Sparkling wines are made all around the world – From across the Channel you can buy Saumur (Loire), Blanquette de Limoux (Languedoc-Roussillon), Clairette de Die (Rhône) and Crémants from Bourgogne, Alsace or Bordeaux. Australia, and in particular Tasmania, produces some quality examples, as does California, Chile and even Brazil. South Africa can justifiably boast of its Cap Classique wines but I’m suggesting you don’t have to look to another continent or even another country – how about English sparkling wines this Christmas? If somehow you missed the hype of English wine during 2012 for the Jubilee and Olympics, make 2013 the year you buy British. Names to look out for are Nyetimber, Ridgeview, Chapel Down, Camel Valley and, multi-award winning estate, Gusborne, especially their Blanc de Blancs 2008.

Whatever you decide to drink, make sure it is perfectly chilled at around 5˚C and served in flutes or tulip-shaped glasses. Remember too that champagne and English sparkling wine can be paired with many types of food, not just breakfast.

And finally, a word to the wise, keep the water flowing over Christmas, sparkling or otherwise, and enjoy everything in boring moderation to avoid having to resort to that morning-after fizz we really don’t want – Alka Sezlter.

COUNTRY FARE The King’s Head at Aston Cantlow Lucinda Bunn

T

he King’s Head at Aston Cantlow, Henley-in-Arden, is a thriving pub, with a warm and friendly bar and a modern restaurant, full of character. A bustling Friday night really was the time to see it in all its glory: clearly a local favourite and a destination spot for foodies in the know.

The bar stretches across the entire front of house with drinkers and diners enjoying the fire and atmosphere together. But up the step and the sophisticated restaurant tells a different story. With blond furniture, soft lighting and elegant tables, the King’s Head plays two parts.

The dinner began with seared scallops with red onion bhajis, served on a cucumber and mint yogurt sauce and whipped organic goat’s cheese with Bloody Mary jelly and baby watercress. The flavours were gentle but attention-grabbing. As was the presentation. Starters are always an opportunity to be theatrical and the chef at the King’s Head certainly has a sense of play.

The scallops were cooked perfectly, the bhaji was an interesting side-plot but it worked well and the plate was lifted with light, fragrant cucumber and yoghurt. Goat’s cheese is a feature on most contemporary menus, but this plate showed imagination with a melt-in-the-mouth combination of sweet whipped cheese and jelly with a punch.

The Cajun seabass showed up next, with a sweetcorn, roast pepper and lime fritter, served with coriander cream as well as the char-grilled beef burger with hand cut chips and tomato relish. Precisely calibrated flavours, each showed the chef’s delicate, self-assured cooking style. The hipster burger comes fully equipped with stylish burger board, big bun, big burger, big chips in a mini fry basket and a jar of relish. The sea bass was a sensory seduction. Flavour pulled from within; the fillet was soft, with a crispy skin of herbs and spices. The bursting sections of the pepper fritter brought a kick of chilli, perfectly partnered with the cool coriander cream.

Then came a clean cut column of Nutella cheesecake with honeycombe ice cream, and not wanting to disappoint the chocolate-lovers out there, the rich white and dark chocolate pot with homemade shortbread.

The rich cheesecake and sweet honeycombe, the velvety chocolate pot and buttery shortbread. Neither dessert was dainty, both were excellent.

The service was unfailingly smooth and professional, the food was fun and unfussy and the mood was good.

The King’s Head is a vibrant pub with a friendly, local feel that doubles as a contemporary dining experience for those who love a meal they can tuck into as well as remember.

Wrapchic opens up in Soho Wrapchic, the Birmingham-based Indian burrito business, has opened its first site in central London. The group, which was founded by entrepreneur Mahesh Raikar in June 2012, has opened a site in Soho’s Beak Street.

KEEP THE CHRISTMAS BULGE AT BAY Indulge without over-indulging this festive season Laura White

n Christmas Day, the average person gobbles up to 7,000 calories – a shocking prospect considering that the recommended daily consumption is no more than 2,000 calories for women and 2,500 calories for men in order to stay fit and healthy.

December is a key month in the social calendar, with many people working hard to lose weight and feel great in their little black dresses, only to pile the pounds straight back on by over-indulging during the festive period.

However Christmas celebrations don’t always have to lead to excess eating, keeping slim whilst still enjoying roast turkey with all the trimmings is easier than you think. Rob Pritchett, head chef at Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse, Bar & Grill has some great advice on how to reduce Christmas calorie intake without upsetting your taste buds: “Braising rather than roasting your Christmas turkey and swapping your goose fat roasted potatoes for grilled sweet potatoes can save you 297 calories and a massive 10.2g of fat – perfect for keeping those calories under control without compromising on taste.

Pile your plate high with traditional seasonal vegetables such as red cabbage, carrots, and Brussels sprouts. The more colours you have on your plate, the greater variety of nutrients - just don’t serve your vegetables smothered in butter!”

Rob is also keen to point out that although we may overindulge on treats during the big day, most Christmas dinners are actually packed with nutrients. “Turkey is full of protein, which helps to fill you up and also contains zinc, a mineral that keeps the immune system

in tip-top shape. Best of all, turkey is lower in fat and calories than many other meats, with a 90g serving of roasted, skinless turkey breast containing just 140 calories and 1.8g of fat.”

For those with a sweet tooth, the following may come as a bit of a surprise, custard contains more calories per typical serving than either cream or brandy butter, Rob said: “Follow the simple motto of ‘everything in moderation.’ If you can’t resist the Christmas pudding, have just a small serving; an average 100g portion contains a massive 330 calories and 11.8g fat.”

clectic, exciting, genuine Indian food. Not many things come close to that. And the opportunity to eat fine, authentic Indian food doesn’t come often. Yes, there are such places, but too often the menu strays from its roots to cater to mainstream tastes.

Not Mela. Harborne’s deliciously unpretentious Indian and Bangladeshi fine-dining restaurant brings intricate flavours and beautiful ingredients together in celebration of the subcontinent.

beer or wine. Try the garlic chilli chicken cooked with garlic, chillies and cumin and simmered in onions and herbs. The dish is full of body and brightness. The chef’s recommendation for chicken hyberabadi was duly noted and we loved the succulent chicken pieces which had been slow-cooked in olive oil and roasted garlic, fresh coriander, cherry tomatoes, mixed peppers, baby potatoes and spinach. The flavour was intense, with a mysterious depth and the chicken ultra-tender.

The first course was a combination of starters; hot garlic sea bass with green chillies and lime leaves, the mix Mela platter with marinated chicken, lamb, tikka, onion bhaji and vegetable samosas. Each dish tastes distinct, a matter of meticulous calibrations. s winter is well and truly upon us and there are all those nasty coughs and colds around, it’s time to write about remedies to help you feel a little better and ease those aches and pains.

Hot not-toddy A hot toddy is great but sometimes you want that warm soothing mix without the liquor and that’s where the hot not-toddy comes in. It’s a healthy alternative for the non-drinker, great to share with the kids and is a soothing relief for a cough or cold.

Put 1 teaspoon of honey, fresh lemon juice, fresh or stem ginger and hot water into a cup and let it steep for 5 mins. You can add cloves, cinnamon sticks and nutmeg...as much or as little as you like. The honey has antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-viral properties; lemon juice is an antiseptic and aids digestion and ginger aids digestion, is an anti-inflammatory and is effective in fighting against human respiratory viruses.

This combination packs a powerful punch against the common cold. For a sore throat, sip hot with some honey and fresh lemon juice.

Chicken Soup A classic remedy for those under the weather but why?

For starters, it raises the temperature in your nose and throat (viruses prefer cooler drier conditions). It also thins out the mucus making it easier to shift and finally it inhibits white blood cells called neutrophils that are released in huge numbers when you have a cold. It’s the congregation of these white cells that causes congestion.

Vegetarians don’t have to miss out - vegetable soup is just as effective in slowing neutrophils activity as well.

Mulled Wine Make up a batch and store in the fridge ready to reheat at a moment’s notice. Simmer the spices and enjoy all the infused flavour and added health benefits. The alcohol is medicinal too and red wine holds super antioxidants so you can enjoy guilt-free merry-making.

Spices According to Indian medicine, cinnamon, ginger and coriander promote sweating and are often used to break a fever. You may also be able to unblock a stuffy nose by using cayenne, horseradish or wasabi with sushi as all of these ingredients shrink the blood vessels in the nose. Try this fever reducer. Put half a teaspoon of coriander, half a teaspoon of cinnamon, with a quarter of a teaspoon of ginger into 250ml of hot water, let it steep for 10 minutes and then drink.

GIFTS FROM THE ORIENT Frankincense and myrrh Hilary Collins

Gold, myrrh and frankincense are the most famous Christmas presents in history. We all know gold, yet few of us have experienced the heady aroma of the latter two or even know what they are.

Frankincense is the dried highly aromatic resinous exudate from the Boswellia tree. Native of southern Arabia and east Africa, with site specific requirements of lime-stone rocky soil and morning mists. These gnarly trees produce a material so expensive and highly prized, at its peak, its value rivalled precious gems, gold and rare silks.

Its price is partially due to rarity and difficulty in cultivation. Removed from their natural habitat, the trees wither and die. Many have tried and failed to grow Boswellia; for all their gardening know-how, King Solomon and the Egyptians never succeeded.

The aroma is a warm, sweet, intoxicating blend of spicy balsam, citrus, with coniferous wood base notes; a fragrance as old as time itself. It is calming, relaxing, mood enhancing and spiritually uplifting. It slows and deepens breathing and has been used to awaken one’s higher consciousness, to enhance meditation and prayer.

Indeed, such was the obsession of the ancients with frankincense, it was thought to directly connect you to your god.

The smoke can be inhaled, oil applied to the skin or granules chewed and consumed. This mystical precious resin has been traded across the world for over 5000 years, used for personal pleasure, but also in medicine and an array of religious ceremonies. Frankincense travelled from Arabia along the incense and silk roads to India, Europe and China. It features in the Song of Solomon, is depicted in Egyptian murals and found in the tomb of King Tutankhamun.

Ancient Egyptians bought boatloads of resins from the Phoenicians, for use in incense, cosmetics/perfume, salves for wounds/sores, insect repellent and of course, embalming. Notable scholars Herodotus, Theophrastus and Pliny the Elder recorded its cultivation and use, with Arabia producing 1524 metric tons per year. It became the most lucrative trade in the world from 1000 BCE to 400 CE, making southern Arabia the richest place on earth. Pliny notes frankincense as an antidote to Hemlock poisoning!

The Romans, quick to spot a good thing, were keen to make the Arabs an offer they couldn’t refuse and sent 10,000 troops in 1BCE to ‘help control production’!

However, they were beaten by the hot, dry desert and never made it. Nero, however, did manage to disrupt the frankincense trade, when he burnt an entire year’s worth of harvest at the funeral of his favourite concubine. Oil of frankincense has been used by Judaic, Christian and Islamic faiths to anoint members of their congregation; the incense burned at Roman Catholic Mass and to celebrate Arabic weddings and births.

Finally, after 5000 years of amateur trials, modern medicine decided to investigate this interesting plant and ‘discovered’ a huge potential, causing ripples of excitement to run through the research community.

Frankincense contains compounds that easily pass through the blood-brain barrier. Trials in 2008 identified

a psychoactive compound Incensole acetate, which relieves depression and anxiety; confirmed in 2012 as being beneficial for the treatment of depressive-like disorders.

However, work is afoot to encourage the Arabian people to preserve these trees and research is being carried out to produce improved hybrids for cultivation. One can but live in hope.

Studies have identified anti-inflammatory properties in Boswellia extracts that are effective in the treatment of joint pain, osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis with no major side-effects. Whilst other investigations suggest that Frankincense may have antiseptic and anti-cancer properties; one component shows promise for re-setting damaged DNA. All very exciting and just as mankind finally realises the true importance of frankincense, the Boswellia tree finds itself endangered. They are in rapid decline due to overtapping, climate change, burning, grazing, clearance for agriculture and the invasion of the longhorn beetle, not to mention war zones.

s the nights draw in, keep your interior bold and bright with statement lights and eye-catching shades. The right lighting can make or break a room. But have you ever walked into a room and marvelled at how the light was diffused? Probably not.

When lighting is impeccable you hardly notice it. If the lighting is right, the space is at its best.

One of the big missteps is overly bright lighting – the kind of light you’d find in a school classroom or an operating theatre. You don’t need to light the whole room. Instead, incorporate multiple points of light. If you can create layers of lights, it’ll draw the eye to focal points in the room and instantly add intrigue and an atmosphere.

Dimmer switches are great for multi-purpose rooms.

You can then be totally flexible with your lighting for different events, guests, moods. Dimmers reduce your energy consumption and increase bulb life. When you’re designing a room’s lighting, be guided by the function of the room. The practical elements – like reading, eating, cooking and doing work – need practical solutions.

Once these have been addressed, you can work on the

mood of the room; whether you’re bringing bright light in, creating the illusion of more space or achieving a romantic, lived-in glow.

Here’s quick guide The kitchen – Pinpoint your work stations and light them directly. Ideally, your lights should be below eyelevel. Task lights under the cabinets work really well.

The bathroom – It’s really up to preference. Some say ‘the brighter the better’ but others would argue that creating natural-looking light is the best.

The living room – Add depth with a combination of floor lamps and table lamps. The lighting should be part of the decor so go modern with innovative designs or rustic and refined with iconic shapes.

The bedroom – Your bedroom should feature good reading lights and an overhead dimming fixture. Add sconces for warmth and detail.

he Stunning Bluthner PH Grand Piano, soon to be featured on BBC1's The Voice, is to be brought to Birmingham Symphony Hall next March for Dorridge Music School’s 2014 concert - A Fusion of Music and Dance.

Leigh Perry, owner of Dorridge Music School and producer of the concert first spotted the amazing looking grand piano, valued at £96,000 in the window of the Bluthners showroom in Mayfair earlier this year.

Unbelievably, Leigh then discovered that the showroom manager, Peter Corney was an old friend and colleague in the music business of 30 years. Bluthner, one of the world’s leading piano manufacturers is supporting DMS in concert. The PH piano will be used on stage and they will have a piano exhibition in Symphony Hall foyer.

The concert being held on Sunday 16th March 2014 will see over 300 musicians from DMS perform live, with guest performer, legendary rock musician Bev Bevan who is also the school’s patron.

COMPUTER CODING Making digital literacy easy Brett Laniosh

T

hroughout the year I run conferences for teachers that showcase some of the best classroom tools for producing large gains in children’s learning and understanding. It probably sounds as though we’re are talking about expensive technology but in actual fact some great products are anything but high in terms of tech or even cost. One of the presenters at our last conference was Neil Westwood from Magic Whiteboard.

You may remember Neil as a winner of BBC’s Dragon’s Den in 2008. For those who haven’t seen it, Magic Whiteboard is a flipchart writing material that sticks to anything. My reasons for inviting Neil was to explore the opportunities for using the product in the classroom and it didn’t surprise me to get a number of calls from schools after the conference who had come with all manner of inventive ways to use Magic Whiteboard.

Those of a certain age may remember when you had to type in code (often from magazines) to get a computer to do anything. It may seem like progress that today all we have to do is download an app to get our computer (yes a smartphone is a computer) to do all kinds of wondrous things. The problem is that we’re in danger of losing a generation who think that computer applications just come out of the ether. The young people that entered code into those early PCs went on to become today’s software developers writing programs that make a significant contribution to the UK’s economy. So computer programming is coming back

Much of my work in schools has creativity running through it for the simple reason that learning is accelerated by actually doing things. Young people watch more programmes online than by watching TV for this very reason. They can interact with characters and play games related to the item they are watching. Smart phones, tablet PCs and good old computers allow us to interact and become active rather than passive learners.

On my website is a “Treasure” page; a list of proven products that can help children’s learning. One such item of treasure is Just2Easy, a cloud based publishing tool that allows you to produce exciting and feature rich pages and even websites. J2e has been a big hit in schools as it does things in a way that you expect. For example in J2e you click on the page and start writing or drawing exactly where you have clicked rather than having your work pushed to the left and top of your page as Microsoft Word does. New Year’s resolutions shouldn’t just be limited to personal goals. Tidying up your business in time for the start of the coming year enables you to concentrate on the everyday running of operations, without the risk of important aspects of your business being neglected, potentially storing up trouble for the future.

It’s often easier for a professional outside your company to identify any potential issues, as they will take an objective view because they’re not immersed in the dayto-day running of the business.

By carrying out a review of a company’s core documents and internal operations, we are able to spot any potential issues and make changes and recommendations to resolve them as quickly as possible.

• When were your contracts of employment or staff manuals last updated? Make sure you check to ensure they accommodate the most recent changes in

legislation such as age discrimination, working hours’ rules, Bribery Act guidelines, and preparedness for the new auto-enrolment pension reforms.

INHERITANCE TAX PLANNING Using your limits to minimise IHT Tom Ware

A

lthough it can feel morbid to contemplate death, inheritance tax planning is best done early and prudently to minimise any potential bill. The rules mean that it is fairly easy to minimise inheritance tax so no-one has to leave their dependents with a big bill to pay.

The nil rate band - i.e. the value of an estate that is not subject to inheritance tax - currently stands at £325,000. The Conservatives had mooted plans to increase the rate to £1m, but this has been put on hold as it does not fit with the climate of austerity; the rate will now be frozen until 2019.

The temptation is to book back-to-back cruises to ensure that little remains in the pot for the tax man. ‘Spending the kids’ inheritance’ has become a popular pastime among retirees. More seriously, many people are also concerned about nursing home fees and ensuring that relatives will have something left if they need long term care. For those that would like to leave something for loved ones, there are a number of exemptions of which they can take advantage. All money left to a spouse is exempt from inheritance tax. A married couple has two nil rate bands. It used to be that if the first spouse died, left the money to the surviving spouse, the nil rate band of the first spouse was lost. However, legislation has changed, so that a nil rate band is still available on the death of the second spouse, creating an effective nil rate band of £650,000.

Charitable giving can substantially reduce someone’s inheritance tax bill. If 10% of a person’s net estate is left to charity, a reduced rate of 36% is payable on the remainder. This can be a tax efficient way to do something worthwhile.

Equally, people should ensure that they give away as much as they can during their lifetime. This is likely to apply to disposable income and chattels, rather than the family home. Sadly, it is not possible to put the family home in childrens’ names and continue to live in it; this is a ‘gift with retention of benefit’.

An individual can give away £3000 per tax year and

it is removed from the value of the estate immediately.

If someone hasn’t used the allowance in one year, they may carry it forward to the next and give away £6000 in that tax year. The recipient can be anyone, from children and grandchildren to friends. Gifts of any size can be made to charities and certain sporting organisations and political parties. Equally, gifts of £250 can be made to anyone at any time. Larger gifts can be made providing they are out of surplus income and form part of a regular pattern of giving. The gift must not materially undermine the donor’s standard of living and must not be made out of capital. This is a little-used exemption and can be extremely useful.

In addition to the standard gift allowances, people can also make one-off gifts to couples getting married. The parents of the bride or groom can give up to £5000, other relatives can give up to £2,500 are also exempt, while everyone else can give gifts of up to £1,000.

Most other transfers of wealth become ‘potentially exempt’. If the donor survives for seven years after the gift is made, the gift falls outside the donor’s estate for inheritance tax purposes. If they die after, say, five years, a tiered allowance applies. Equally, lifetime gifts for the maintenance of a spouse, child (under 18) or dependent relative are exempt from tax.

Inheritance tax is often seen as a ‘voluntary tax’ because there are so many ways not to pay it. That may stretch the point, but there are certainly plenty of easy ways to avoid leaving a big bill.

n a world of low interest rates, volatile markets and increasing life expectancy, Matthew Holden-Jones offers some useful guidance on retirement planning.

Although the State Pension provides a limited income (currently £5727.80 for a single person, per annum, based on a full NI record), it falls drastically short of what is really needed to fund a comfortable lifestyle. So how do we avoid poverty in retirement?

First, decide how large a fund you will need. One method is to multiply your target retirement income by 25. For example, if you think you’ll need £25,000 a year, aim for a fund of £625,000.

Next, select the most appropriate investment vehicles to achieve your goal. Property, Investment Bonds and ISAs have all proved popular over recent years but don’t offer the same degree of tax breaks or guarantees as a pension. Take advice from a trusted financial professional. If your retirement is imminent you will obviously want to maximise your income from the money available. But be aware – you’ll need to make it last.

Retirement funds are coming under increasing pressure from the simple fact that we’re living longer.

In 1981, a person’s pension was expected to last them for 16 years. With people generally living longer and facing the possibility of funding a retirement that could now last 20 years or more. So what are your best income options? Most people will be familiar with annuities, whereby you exchange pension funds for a guaranteed annual income from a life assurance company. Annuities are fixed for life but they can be linked to inflation and furthermore, can provide your partner with an income when you pass away.

The annuity rate offered by the life assurer is affected by the prevailing yield on gilts and corporate bonds.

Annuity rates have recently been falling. Nevertheless, it is imperative to exercise the Open Market Option – your right to compare annuity rates in the market – before making a decision.

An alternative to an annuity is something called income drawdown. These schemes aim to outperform annuities by investing in assets such as stocks and shares. With recent market volatility they have not performed well. That said opportunities may exist for those phasing in retirement as markets will, eventually, bounce back.

Maserati GranCabrio Sport Liam Bird

T

hey’re at it again, the weathermen, with their talk of wild winds, heavy rain, and artic blasts. The nights are drawing in and I’m pretty sure the duvet is finding it harder to relinquish its grip of me in the mornings. As a neighbour said to me the other day, as yet again the heavens opened, “It’s not exactly convertible weather anymore is it?”

Oh, if only they knew. The inclement weather also coincided with my time with Maserati’s GranCabrio Sport, the 4.7 litre, 450bhp, sharper, harder hitting version of the Italian motor maker’s 4-seater drop-top grand-tourer. Mother Nature may well have brought the rain in certain parts of the Welsh Marches, but it was the engine-builders of Northern Italy supplied the thunder that day.

By pressing the GranCabrio’s Sport Button you immediately open two butterfly valves in the exhaust system. Not only does that unleash the Sport’s final 10bhp it also allows the gases a quicker more, free flowing exit. With the valves closed the Grancabrio Sport emits a muted all-Italian V8 grumble that any car fan could instantly fall for. With the valves open however, one of the most powerful road-going Maseratis you can buy, produces the kind of noises that stir the soul.

It’s the sound of pure indulgence, a deep bass rumble that builds into a hard-edged shriek as the revs and your velocity rise. It’s the kind of sound that has you deliberately driving round looking for tunnels and bridges, purely so as you can drive under or through them in order to hear its timbre echoing off their walls. You find yourself using the slender column mounted paddles to change down through the six-speed automatic gearbox not because you have to, but simply because you can.

There is more to the GranCabrio Sport than just the ability to show off though. True its looks aren’t exactly for shrinking violets but should you want it to, the GranCabrio Sport is more than capable of playing the long distance cruiser role well. It seems to suit a more relaxed driving style and favour wide open roads.

But it will seat four in comfort. How many other near drop-tops, capable of 177mph and 0-62 in 5 seconds dead, can you think of that will do that?

If we were to pick faults you could say the brakes need a firm push, the boot is hopelessly small and the interior’s multitude of buttons seem to have been distributed around the dashboard with a scatter gun.

To be brutally honest the GranCabrio Sport is madly impractical; it’s expensive, heavy, thirsty, arguably not quite as well constructed as its price tag demands it should be and probably not as good to drive as its looks suggest it could be. Ultimately it’s an exotic and flawed beauty, the kind of which you buy with your heart rather than your head. Strange though how you'll forgive it for nearly everything as soon as you turn the key.

A CLASSIC INVESTMENT Better than money in the bank Adrian Hunt

A

recent study has found the price of a Marque model, such as Ferrari, Bugatti, or Bentley has more than quadrupled over the past decade.

In fact, in the last 10 years luxury cars have increased by 430%. Even gold is left behind at 273% and stamps at 255%. London property, although a clever investment, has only increased by 135%. But, the real loser looks to be antique furniture at a loss of 19% over the same time.

One of the reasons for this is, because classic cars are a tangible asset that we can touch and feel, and, indeed drive. Everyone knows and understands a Ferrari or a Jaguar, but not many of us understand other investments such as art or shares.

Owning a classic car is not just an investment. It is something we can all enjoy looking at or listening to.

What a pleasure it is to drive to a country pub for a local ale on a sunny Sunday lunchtime in your own "pride and joy".

Also, don't forget a few years ago; it looked a bit risky having money in the bank, full-stop!

However, don't be fooled into thinking that your Triumph Spitfire or Hillman Imp is now worth a fortune and that now is the time to cash it in. All of these statistics relate to serious classic marques such as Ferrari, Aston-Martin, Maserati, Bentley, Jaguar and a few more.

Mind you, the values of even the humble classics have gone up, mainly on the back of the fact that they've all gone up. But the big quoted values and attained auction prices only belong to "the best of the best". The worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most expensive car recently changed hands for $52 million. It was a Ferrari 250 GTO, one of only 39 made.

The average condition classic will still only fetch an average price, but the best conditioned and historical car will be the one that fetches big money.

The Jaguar E-Type must be on most peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wish list, boy or girl. It is instantly recognisable by almost any age group. It is respected and admired by all who see one all over the world. It was introduced to universal acclaim in 1961 when the Daily Mail called it "The most wanted car in the world".

The E-Type was continuously upgraded and modified and remained in production until 1974. In total 72,500

www.edgemagazine.org cars were produced in three series, ending with a V12 engine.

Which brings me on to the one you can see pictured here. It is a 1972. Series 3 V12 Roadster finished in Primrose Yellow with the options of Wire wheels and Whitewall tyres. It cost a smidgeon over £3000 when new, a large saving over a new Ferrari 246GT Dino at £5500.

This car has covered only 45,000 miles over 41 years and is in almost perfect condition. Its value is on the increase and some are already advertised at over £100,000. However, this one can be bought and enjoyed, with NIL road tax, for a mere £80,000.

Ged Quinn, I Like to Know What I’m Being Shown, 2012

I

t’s been a wonderful year for the Heart of England galleries. We’ve seen some fantastic exhibitions and next year looks set to welcome more brilliant artists to the three counties. To ring in 2014, we’re in Walsall this edition, for a special solo exhibition.

This winter, The New Art Gallery Walsall presents a major exhibition of paintings by Ged Quinn. The exhibition will survey Quinn’s practice over the last four years, bringing together paintings from private collections in Europe and America as well as a brand new body of work created especially for this project. The exhibition will testify to the breadth of the artist’s practice and will include landscapes, portraits and still lifes, resplendent in references to history, myth and popular culture from across and through time. The subtle, teasing and at times, unnerving nature of the juxtapositions at play in Quinn’s work, situate him as a leading contemporary painter.

Although Quinn has shown extensively in Europe and America, this will be his first solo exhibition in a public gallery in the UK since Tate St Ives in 2004 and Tate Liverpool in 2008 as part of the Liverpool Biennial.

In Quinn’s more recent works, the mysterious and intriguing scenarios that nestled within the grand landscapes reminiscent of artists like Claude Lorrain and Jacob Ruisdael have emerged to centre stage where references to European history, mythology and Modernist architecture jostle for attention alongside artistic and literary references and homages to filmmakers such as Jean-Luc Godard and Andrei Tarkovsky. In one of the new landscape paintings, traditional pictorial devices used to suggest depth or perspective are playfully challenged by the use of filmic text or explicit engagement with the flatness of the canvas. Quinn’s paintings provide an intellectual space for an interrogation and critique of modernism fuelled by the artist’s own unique perspective.

Quinn also produces much smaller works including intense portraits and still lifes that are equally as compelling. Two brand new portraits currently being completed for the exhibition are inspired by the complex and troubled relationship between poet Paul Celan, a Holocaust survivor, and Martin Heidegger, one of the most influential 20th century philosophers. Celan struggled to reconcile his admiration for the writings of Heidegger with his abhorrence of his Nazi past. The two engaged in regular communication between 1951 and 1970. Typically, Quinn’s intriguing portraits of these figures are loaded with broader cultural references.

A substantial publication accompanies the exhibition with texts by Michael Bracewell and Dr Brian Dillon as well as colour reproductions of all works exhibited. The publication is co-published with Stephen Friedman Gallery, London and supported by Walsall Museums and Art Galleries Development Trust.

Ged Quinn was born in Liverpool in 1963. He has studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing in Oxford, the Slade School of Art in London, the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf and the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam. He has exhibited widely and his work is represented in many collections. Recent solo exhibitions include Bass Museum, Miami, Florida, USA (2012-13) and Modern Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas (2012). He has an upcoming group show, at Galerie Rudolfinium, Viktor Pivovarov and Ged Quinn, Rudolfinium, Prague, Czech Republic (2014).

Brumtown Records Presents: Relo ‘Crazy Over You’ Brumtown Records is home to a unique and diverse family of artists/producers based in Birmingham, UK. Founded by Levi ‘KMD’ St Juste and inspired by the mechanics of Berry Gordy’s Motown, the roster boasts a mix of talented artists including the fantastic, newest addition Relo dubbed as ‘the UK’s Beyonce’.

Beyonce? Yeah I know that may sound just a tad bit ambitious, however, if you take a listen to her debut single ‘Crazy Over You’, produced by Brumtown Hit Factory, you may actually find yourself coming up with the same

conclusion.

Relo (Tshwarelo Nhlapo) is an 18-year-old British R&B singer/ songwriter. Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Now the single is ready and the campaign has started, Relo is very happy, excited and ready to be catapulted into the music industry with support of her new team, her friends and family.

Jack and the Beanstalk at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre is covering all bases this Christmas, with festive fun for the family in its traditional pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk, and a yuletide treat for grown-ups in its B2 Xmas Show, Oh No It Isn’t!, starring RSC actress Katy Stephens.

Luke Burton’s recycled aluminium sculptures Tom Carroll

A

t only 31 years of age, Luke Burton is carving a name for himself in the frenzied world of art. The Solihull sculptor, who has been honing his skills for over a decade, has developed his style using heavy, industrial materials to create pieces that are structurally interesting and unique.

Alongside an army of private collectors, Luke has begun to create public pieces of art in an attempt to bring art back to the streets and get the public talking. These colossal pieces have caused quite a stir amongst those who have seen them, not only for their sheer scale but also for the innovative way that Luke has used processes and materials not often associated with fine art.

“I think the art world can be a bit stuffy and boring at times, with much of it tucked away in galleries that can be daunting to the general public. I think that art should be accessible to everyone, wherever they go and we should be doing more to bring art back to the public. Many people will not have seen pieces of art of this size before, especially ones

that you can touch and interact with, without fear of damaging them, so it is pleasing that the reaction has been so positive”.

One of Luke’s most recent creations, “Believe”, stands 9ft high and weighs over 250 kilograms, was unveiled in Stratford-uponAvon for the launch of the Olympic torch relay before being placed on the 25th floor of the landmark Cube building in Birmingham city centre to gain as much exposure as possible.

Inspired by the strength and determination of the Great British Olympic team, the cast aluminium piece was then auctioned off for the charity Help for Heroes with guest auctioneer Lord Digby Jones helping to raise a substantial amount for the cause, which is very close to the heart of the young Silhillian.

“When you see the strength and determination that these guys put in it leaves you in absolute awe. The idea behind “Believe” was that of strength and courage, so auctioning it off for Help for Heroes seemed

EdgeMagazine like the best option. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very pleasing that we were able to contribute to such a wonderful charityâ&#x20AC;?.

As well as the piece that stood at the top of the Cube, Luke also exhibited an 18ft, diving board piece at the National Exhibition Centre as part of the Olympic celebrations. This was a similarly impressive use of industrial materials and again was placed in an space where the public could access the work, allowing them to get up close and personal with the art, something that Luke considers vital in getting the public to appreciate the art that he creates.

Luke is now focusing on his next creations including a piece that he hopes will become one of the largest public art pieces in the world. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My next project could potentially be the largest piece of art ever created and we are all very excited about it.
