im Scott-Wright is one of the UK’s leading names in hairdressing. Under the watchful eye of two previous winners of the Midlands Hairdresser of the Year award, Tim has learnt from the best and built a huge local following. With 18 years’ experience and a slew of nationally recognised awards, Tim has opened his new salon, The Hair Surgery. We stepped inside to find out more.

You can read magazines, paint your nails at the nail bar and help yourself to tea, coffee and a glass of wine.

We also have freshly baked cakes and treats delivered twice a week.

How did you get into hairdressing?

So how do you create a tailored hairstyle and a personalised colour?

I sort of fell into hairdressing by mistake really. I left school and decided to do psychiatric nursing which I started at college but it just wasn’t for me. So I headed down to Lower High Street and went into Umberto Giannini’s. Umberto was fantastic; he introduced me to the industry. He won Midland’s Hairdresser of the Year in 1995 and I remember saying to him that I’d love to win it one day. He said, ‘If you work hard enough, one day you will.’

What experience will each of your clients get when they walk into your salon?

It’s about enjoying the social atmosphere and boosting someone’s confidence. I want our clients to leave feeling

Well it all comes down to the consultation. If you get the consultation right, you’re 80% there on creating the perfect look. A haircut has got to work for you. A good hairdresser will know how the cut will fall and grow out, how colour can best be maintained and how it might fade. That’s the key to getting a tailored look; knowing about a client’s lifestyle, how they like to do their hair and what they’ll be able to create on a daily basis.

What styles have stood out for you at this year’s awards season?

Cate Blanchett always gets it right for me. Helen Mirren looks timeless and effortlessly cool and Jennifer Lawrence’s new cut is a fantastic transformation; she’s gone from girl next door to couture.

What one top hair tip do you swear by?

A great at-home hair regime. I think you need to invest in fantastic products that are right for your hair type and the style you’re creating. At the Hair Surgery, we are handing out prescriptions for each client with tips on how to maintain and enhance their look at home. They can collect the tools and products from the in-salon dispensary.

Everybody knows that a beautiful smile is attractive.

However, many people with crooked front teeth are deterred from doing anything about it because they simply canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t face the prospect of lengthy treatments, unsightly metal brackets and unaffordable prices.

The Inman Aligner This is a removable brace or appliance that is designed to straighten the front teeth in a very short amount of time. It consists of two thin clear bows, which sit in front and behind the 4 to 6 front teeth. Over time these bows slide up the teeth, applying a constant, gentle force that straightens them.

Well, advancements in orthodontics now allow for quick, discreet treatments that can transform your smile in less time than you might think and for a lot less than you might expect.

These treatments can be broadly divided into 2 types, those that are removable (can be removed from the mouth at any time) and those that are fixed.

These systems include a series of almost invisible transparent aligners that sit over the teeth in the same way as a very thin gum shield would. Each aligner is designed to slowly move the teeth to a desired position and each set of aligners are intended to be worn for about 2 weeks before they are replaced by the next.

Clear aligners can be used to treat a wide variety of situations, however due to the small incremental tooth movements, treatment times can often be increased.

Short-Term Orthodontics Short-term orthodontics is a fixed alternative that uses toothcoloured brackets and wires to gently move teeth into a more desirable position. With this cutting edge treatment, most

Once treatment is complete, nothing complements beautiful straight teeth better than a course of whitening, and as a general rule I would normally provide this as part of the treatment at no extra cost.

With all of these systems it is important to stress that once treatment is complete, it is essential to maintain the new tooth positions with some form of retainer.

W

hen Julie Brettell was diagnosed with cancer in April 2008, she was only 37. Because of her age, she was treated with rigorous courses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The side effects of both were devastating.

Whilst dealing with a life-threatening illness, with its mental and physical challenges, Julie also had to manage hair loss, dry, itchy skin and weakened nails.

The knock in confidence was too much to bear. Her childhood friends, sisters Paula Farrington and Lisa Farrington-Martin rallied to support their friend with beauty solutions. They brought Julie hats and scarves to experiment with a new look and researched natural skincare products. The hats didn’t cover her hairline and there were no effective products that weren’t packed with chemicals and parabens. And if Julie, Lisa and Paula had found that, no doubt more women affected by cancer are finding that too.

Embrace is a boutique, founded by Julie, Lisa and Paula, providing a service for cancer survivors or those undergoing treatment. Julie was given her 5 year all-clear in April last year and it was after this fantastic news that the Embrace team decided to open the boutique. Julie said, ‘After I got the 5 year all-clear, I was determined to give something back.

I didn’t want women to go through the same struggles I did in sourcing quality products’. Paula and Lisa ditched their jobs to work full time on the project. After weeks of talking to suppliers, testing products and researching products, they undertook training in mastectomy lingerie fitting and wig fitting. Embrace was finally taking shape. The aim was always to provide relief and support to women affected by cancer and so Julie, Lisa and Paula held focus groups to speak to women first hand and get

their insight into recovery and the things they wanted from a boutique such as Embrace.

The Embrace boutique is situated in Reindeer Court, off the high street and away from the hustle and bustle but easy to access with public parking close by. Embrace provides spacious, private changing rooms, fitting services and a carefully created customer experience so you feel beautiful, comfortable and confident. Lisa said, ‘It is so rewarding to help women going through a difficult time in their lives. It’s great when we can fit a woman with a bra they feel so comfortable in they want to keep it on when they leave the shop.’

Embrace also works with local charities and organisations to raise money for cancer campaigns. They’re currently supporting the Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign, aiming to raise £1.8 million to build a dedicated Breast Unit at Worcestershire Royal Hospital for use by men and women across Worcestershire for all breast-related issues.

The opening evening saw both new and existing customers flock to the salon to receive a number of beauty treatments throughout the night. Celebrity makeup artist, Jackie Gordon treated customers to ARTDECO makeovers whilst Michelle hosted a raffle in aid of Acorns Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospices raising ÂŁ200 with generous prizes donated from local businesses.

Speaking about the event Michelle said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;I would like to thank all of our new and existing customers for their support. The evening was a great success with many of our guests taking advantage of our wide range of treatments including the new Genesis combined ultrasound and light therapy facial.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;

richology is not necessarily a word that you hear every day. It is the branch of dermatology that deals with the scientific study of the health of hair and scalp, not just looking at chronic problems such as alopecia, but also how to make sure your hair genuinely is healthy from root to tip. So often the health of your hair is only looked at once it has left the hair follicle, but Joe and Steve at The Hairdressers in Droitwich Spa believe that much can be done to improve the health of your hair and scalp at a much earlier opportunity and I was invited to try it out.

Having recently had a baby my hair is currently falling out more than ever before.

This is usual I am told and happens due to the fact that all shedding of hair pretty much stops for 9 months due to hormones and that extra healthy diet, then after baby arrives the body starts to get back to normal. Meaning that nice, thick head of hair isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t going to stick around forever, so is there anything that can be done to try and keep my hair and scalp as healthy as while I was pregnant?

Joe looked at my hair in minute detail to see what we could do.

Seeing my hair and scalp in that close detail was a little bit unnerving, but also fascinating!

I was quite lucky, the general condition of my hair and scalp wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t too bad, just a couple of things that needed rebalancing and given a bit of a boost, but for people with more serious problems such as hair thinning, alopecia or very dry and flaky scalp this kind of assessment and subsequent treatment can be genuinely life changing.

At the end of my consultation I was recommended a course of treatment, that included a gentle scalp shampoo, a scalp tonic and 9 individual treatments to help feed the hair follicle. I am returning in 3 months for my follow up consultation and will let you know how I get on.

henwe think of Spanish and Italian cuisine, we think of simple, tasty combinations, the freshest ingredients and comfort food to enjoy with friends. Luna Rosa does not disappoint.

Located in the heart of Knowle, Luna Rosa’s menu simmers and sizzles with earthy, seasonal ingredients. Rustic classics and seafood specials, it’s all about the food.

The starters make for piquant snacks you can dip in and out of. Those who love seafood will go mad for the piatti caldi and the great grilled fish options.

Mussels, clams, squid, lobster and scallops; Luna Rosa is bringing the Mediterranean to the Midlands.

We went for Antipasto della Casa with its selection of mixed Italian meats, with buffalo mozzarella and rocket salad the selection was plentiful and delicious; tasters to excite the senses ready for the main event. The Linguine alla Marinara also made a fantastic starter, oozing rustic Italian flavours with fine ribbons of pasta cooked with mussels, scallops, clams and prawns in a basil white wine sauce.

Next up we had sea bass with mussels, clams and scallops served with saffron and garlic cherry tomatoes and white wine with asparagus purée. The smell of saffron and the sweet flavour of the cherry tomatoes made the perfect counterpart to the beautiful seafood. From the specials’ board we chose the rack of lamb in a red wine jus. The lamb was well cooked and served with a crispy potato rösti.

This plate had some classic Italian flavours, with a soft texture to the quality lamb and the infused red wine jus was rich and delicious. Each dish was effortlessly executed but the depth of flavour at Luna Rosa shows the brilliance of the Italian and Spanish culinary imagination.

The entertainment started with some Spanish guitar played by an outstandingly talented musician.

The tone, the tempo and the style all lifted the restaurant, creating this sensual ambiance that complemented the food perfectly. As we moved onto our final course, a shared cheese platter, dancing carried the night forward, with bongos bringing the beat and dancers performing a fiery flamenco routine.

The light, fragrant dishes at Luna Rosa will cheer up even the most jaded palate. Rocket leaves, wild mushrooms, limoncello, saffron, smoked pancetta and melt-in-the-mouth prosciutto are just some of the fresh, flavoursome ingredients that make up the Luna Rosa menu. Mediterranean food inspires the world and we know why; it’s full of colour, texture, taste and all-round goodness.

Five Rivers launches new à la carte menu at exclusive press evening Five Rivers À La Carte in Walsall kick-started the new year with the launch of their exciting new à la carte menu, at an exclusive press evening in January.

The award-winning Walsall restaurant invited a few select members of the press with guests including representatives from a handful of local newspapers, magazines, and online blogs.

The new à la carte menu has been expertly created by international award-winning Executive Group Chef, Rashpal Sunner. Guests were treated to a full tasting menu which was superbly presented on glass platters by Five Rivers’ award-winning chefs, and was accompanied by a flight of wine.

Best of Broad Street Awards 2014 The annual awards ceremony, celebrating the best of one Birmingham’s most vibrant and buzzing business districts has, yet again showcased at the International Convention Centre. Meet the Moorings’ General Manager, Richard O’Grady Lucinda Bunn

I really like René Redzepi at Noma. He makes the most beautiful plates; it’s just eye candy of the highest order. I really like the foraging aspect to his cuisine.

How did you start cooking?

How do you source the ingredients for the kitchen?

My father owned a restaurant and he continues to work in food so I was cooking from a young age. I’d always helped him and my first job was working part time in the local gastropub up the road which to this day has a sterling reputation (The Crab Mill). I continued there from pot washing to front of house to put myself through university. I did a bit of everything in that job and it certainly taught me how it all works.

We follow the seasons carefully. We go to the market and hand pick the food we serve in the restaurant. We try to buy locally where possible and I think that’s the way to get the best quality and support local industry. There’s nothing quite like British produce and I think that really shines through on our menu. We stick closely to British and French cuisine but we like to experiment with our specials so we’ll include dishes from both sides of the spectrum; from a cod BLT to a whole lemon sole. We pride ourselves on homemade British soul food, but we try to add a little artistry too.

Who are the chefs who have influenced you?

I’ve always followed the career of Marco Pierre White very closely. I think he’s an example to so many of us.

And for the more avant-garde, new-wave sort of stuff,

What course excites you most?

Starters excite me most. Because of the creativity; they’re delicate and inventive. They’re often labourintensive but the end result is always simple and stunning. I think customers are encouraged to be a little more adventurous with starters too and I love to see people try something new.

Where do you like to eat out?

I’ve got my favourites. For lunch, I look no further than Corleone Caffe in Leamington. The same company have Micatto in Warwick; I do love Italian food. More recently I went to The Wild Rabbit in Kingham, out in the Cotswolds. It’s experimental, traditional food. It’s very cool.

What does spring mean for your menu at the Moorings?

We’ve got a lamb mixed grill which I’m really looking forward to. It’s all parts so we have sweetbreads, liver, slow-braised shoulder and cutlets which we’re serving with a minted hash brown and an onion purée. We tried it last week and it was stunning.

very garden should have a plentiful supply of herbs.

They are so easy to grow and you can fill your herb bed with interesting scents together with the luxury of fresh own grown herbs for your culinary needs...fresh chopped coriander in your curry is truly sensational.

A dedicated herb bed or border can be so beneficial just outside the kitchen door, and so handy for easy picking.

Many will happily grow in pots or window boxes but herbs can just as easily be inserted between other plants in your borders. If your space is limited herbs do well in containers. Many herbs such as rosemary are evergreen, originating in warm Mediterranean climates, preferring well drained soils, they actually thrive on neglect. March is a good time to establish your herb garden for the summer months ahead. The soil is warming up and your newly planted mature plants will quickly become established providing you with a never ending supply through to the autumn.

he Droitwich Spa Festival Committee is putting together a fantastic programme of local food and drink, music and arts events in this historic salt town this summer.

It takes place in the town centre and pubs, clubs and venues around town and offers great entertainment for both local residents and visitors.

Taking place from the 20th June to 6th July this year’s calendar is jam-packed with highlights.

Friday 20th June sees the ‘Celebration of Local Food and Drink Dinner’ take place, with guest speakers Restaurateur Mark Hix and Food Critic and MasterChef judge, Charles Campion to be held at the St Andrews Town Hotel Droitwich Spa Saturday 21st June will see the annual Food and Drink Festival take place, with up to 100 stalls and demonstration kitchen featuring the 5 Worcestershire Chefs in Droitwich Town centre.

On Saturday 28th June the Cheese and Cider Festival will take place at the Gardeners Arms on Vines Lane, Droitwich Throughout the festival there will be a whole host of fun activities taking place in Droitwich, these include: Live music in the town centre, the Literary Festival, theatre performances, jazz and classical concerts, art displays and activities and a selection of competitions.

The festival will finish on the 6th July with “Big Picnic in the Park” taking place at Lido Park Droitwich Spa. PADDLING PANAMA

Conservation and recordbreaking combined

I

n March this year a duo of young British adventurers and conservationists are setting out on a recordbreaking expedition to paddle the length of Panama.

This outlandish idea for an expedition stands to leave the participants as pioneers of a relatively undeveloped area of the globe’s battle against environmental devastation.

The journey will be undertaken on 12 foot long surfboards known as prone paddleboards. Since the creation of these boards as a means of transport for ancient Polynesians some 3000 years ago, nobody has attempted a journey of this magnitude.

The journey will see the pair travelling over 1000s of kilometres by arm power alone, eclipsing all previous journeys on these boards by some 450 kilometres.

The inspiration for the trip stems from when the team first visited Panama in 2009, searching the rain forest for the rare Strawberry Poison Dart Frog. An experience that left them in awe of not only the beauty and stunning biodiversity of the country, but also the fragility of this unique eco system. At which point the gauntlet was set to one day return to fully explore the regions in the name of conservation.

That time has now come. After years of planning, preparation and countless hours of fundraising this 5 year dream will now become a reality.

Whilst the touring party will be collecting a wide range of data for use by Panama’s Environment Agency the trip has two main aims, the pursuit of a population of allusive Antillean Manatees and the first comprehensive photographing of the critically endangered Salamander, Oedipina Maritima, which is known to exist only on the tiny offshore island of Isla Escudo de Verguas.

On top of the great number of scientific photos that will be taken, the duo is also filming the journey with the end product being a raw and insightful documentary.

On top of the constant battle of fundraising to make the trip possible the expedition is also supporting a fantastic environmental charity, Seacology, which focuses on sustainably integrating people with the environment.

BIRDSONG AT THE REPERTORY THEATRE Peter Duncan talks about his role in the trenches Lucinda Bunn

M

arking the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, Birdsong is the hit, critically acclaimed stage show based on the world famous novel by Sebastian Faulks. We caught up with Peter Duncan who plays Jack Firebrace.

Tell us about the production.

Whilst it’s faithful to the plotline, the playwright Rachel Wagstaff has given the production its own momentum.

It’s largely set in these flashbacks where the protagonist Stephen looks back at his life so there’s this connection between present and past lives. It grips you by the heart and drags you to the end.

What makes Birdsong work both as a novel and on stage?

Our director Alistair Whatley is a very clever man. The stage design is fantastic and the soundscape particularly is extraordinary. It’s like having an extra cast member.

Can you tell us about the character of Jack?

Jack Firebrace is a working class man, mining underground in the trenches. Like many men who signed up because of their mining skills, he didn’t necessarily think he’d see any action. The inventory jobs looked lucrative. I think developing the character on stage is a working progress. I’ve learnt my lines but the thing about Jack is that he absorbs other characters’ fears. He has a huge heart and a faith in moral justice.

What’s the most important thing for the audience to gain from the play?

I think whether you’ve read the book or not, you’ll be surprised by the passion and raw emotion in the play. It’s not a lot of laughs, no, but I do think it’s an enlightening experience.

Have you performed at the Rep before?

I haven’t and I’m very much looking forward to it.

You’ve had a long, successful career in the industry, what’s your secret?

There’s no secret. I’m very lucky to find myself in this production. I have always been an actor but I think my other work in the past has tended to diminish rich acting roles for me so I feel very privileged to find myself in this space.

I produce a Christmas panto every year at the Oxford Playhouse and aside from acting, I have set up a Bulgarian Holiday company. I’m also involved with an organisation my wife has set up called ‘Neighbourhood Midwives’. The aim is to provide more choices for positive birthing experiences. WE WORKED AT ‘THE PORCELAIN’ At the Museum of Royal Worcester

W

e worked at ‘The Porcelain’ is a new exhibition on show at the Museum of Royal Worcester, running until 1st August 2014.

It is a photographic exhibition containing images of former employees of Royal Worcester, spanning the last 60 years of the company. The pictures show all areas of the factories in Severn Street and Portland Walk, once home to hundreds of people living in Worcester and the surrounding area.

Carrie-Anne Parkes, Heritage Project Officer, said “We were looking for a way to reach out and engage with the community of former Royal Worcester employees and seize the opportunity to find out more about some of the images in our archives. The museum has inherited a wonderful collection of images taken inside the factory for press and publicity reasons, but many of the people in them are not identified. The exhibition proved to be a perfect opportunity to connect with all the former employees of Royal Worcester and create opportunities for them to see some old faces and help the museum out.”

As part of the exhibition, the museum is hosting a series of free open days for former workers. The first of these held in February proved to be a massive success and brought to life the pride and community felt by everyone who was a part of the Royal Worcester family.

There were many characters working at ‘The Porcelain’ including Daisy Rea. She was in charge of the Paintress’ department for many years, and kept a tight rein on her girls. At Christmas, different departments hosted parties and the Paintress’ were not allowed to join in with the men, much to their disappointment!

Another gem was the identity of one worker, Albert Carter. He worked for the company for many years, gaining his 50 year long service award in 1974. Albert made crucibles that were sold to Sellafield, to be used in the production of uranium for atomic weapons.

The chemicals used were highly dangerous but little safety equipment was provided.

If you used to work at Royal Worcester, or know someone who did, then please spread the word and encourage them to come and visit this nostalgic exhibition and share their memories of working at ‘The Porcelain’. The forthcoming dates for the free open days for former workers are: Saturday 22nd March, Friday 2nd May and Saturday 21st June 2014; refreshments served at 2.30pm.

Historic and contemporary portrait miniatures at the Barber Andrew Davies

M

ini Mini masterpieces of portrait painting come under the microscope at Birmingham’s Barber Institute of Fine Arts this spring, with two connected exhibitions of miniatures spanning more than three hundred years.

The Barber – based at the University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston campus – is establishing itself as quite a centre for miniatures. Last year, the gallery accepted on long-term loan, two separate, highly significant collections of these tiny portraits – one being the wellknown Daphne Foskett Collection.

Originally emerging in Europe in the royal courts of the 17th century, these beautiful, luminescent little paintings – usually painted in watercolour on ivory or the more opaque bodycolour on vellum – served many purposes. They were presented as gifts expressing royal favour – and the recipients were expected to wear them as symbols of their loyalty. They were also exchanged during diplomatic negotiations or strategic royal marriage arrangements.

Family Circles: British Portrait Miniatures of Children and Families, which runs until 26th May, features some exquisite miniatures of the Stuart Royal house – including one thought to depict Mary, Queen of Scots, and others of her grandchildren, Elizabeth, Queen of Bohemia (by one of the great miniaturists of the 17th century, Peter Oliver), her husband, Frederick V, Elector Palatine, and their son, Prince Rupert of the Rhine.

With the growth of the middle classes in the 18th century, and the advent of the Romantic period, families changed – with society recognising marriages and family relationships based on love and affection.

Simultaneously, miniature painting became more widespread and affordable, with many painters coming from the middle classes themselves, and this fascinating display also includes pairs of miniatures of husbands and wives, betrothed couples, and some charming if

slightly sentimental pictures of children – emphasising their innocence and playfulness, rather than their former status as mini adults.

Bringing the form right up to date is the complementary exhibition, Ruby’s Room: Photographic Miniatures by Bettina von Zwehl (21 february – 26 May). An intriguing eye-miniature in the collection of the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath was the starting point for this series of recent works by one of Britain’s most respected contemporary photographers. While producing a series of works inspired by historic portrait miniatures at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and at the Holburne Museum in Bath, Von Zwehl encountered a variant of the genre briefly fashionable in 19th-century England, which featured paintings of single eyes from members of one family. Ruby’s Room – first displayed at the Holburne Museum – is her response: an exploration of her own family connections through immaculate and carefully composed photographic portraits. The subjects are Von Zwehl herself and her young daughter, Ruby, and eye portraits of her husband and Ruby – each mounted into jewellery by designer Laura Lee. The show also features challenging eye portraits of Ruby’s classmates, and portraits of herself, Ruby and young girls and women, also inspired by miniatures in the Bath collections.

The two miniatures exhibitions are complemented by a gallery talk on Tuesday 4th March, a fine art valuation day in collaboration with Bonhams on Monday 31st March and a lunchtime lecture on Wednesday 2nd April.

ast month was National Heart Month. But loving your most vital organ is a life-long, not monthlong commitment. There are about 2.6 million people living with Coronary heart disease (CHD) and it is the UK’s biggest killer, causing around 82,000 deaths each year.

Like all charitable initiatives, Evesham Cardiac Rehab requires funding to maintain the vital service it delivers. Fundraising events are crucial. If you would like to help, why not book a ticket for its black tie charity dinner on March 29, at The Wood Norton Hotel, Evesham?

Gerry O’Donnell, current Chairman of Wychavon District Council, has personal experience of the effects of heart disease. In 1991 he was rushed to the hospital in Dumfries after suffering a heart attack. On discharge he was referred to his local Cardiac Rehab facility in Alton, Hampshire. That facility was established and run by Dr. Hugh Bethell, the UK’s leading GP in the field of Cardiac Rehabilitation at the time and the first to establish a community based service. Cardiac rehab contributed greatly to Gerry’s recovery and return to work.

TV Celebrity and author Sally Bee will be formally introduced at the dinner, as the Charity’s new Patron.

Sally suffered three heart attacks at just 36 years of age. She had never smoked and didn’t drink, proving heart disease can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender or lifestyle.

In 2008 Gerry set up Evesham Vale Cardiac Rehab.

His vision was to establish a community based facility, fully integrated into the discharge pathway of hospital Cardiology Units. Located at the Evesham Leisure Centre, programmes of supervised exercise are supported by counselling, nutritional advice and overall rehabilitation guidance.

Cardiac Rehabilitation is one of the most effective treatments available to heart patients. Patients learn how to manage their condition, reducing dependency on health services and so sitting comfortably alongside the current NHS push for patient-led care.

However, Cardiac Rehabilitation is not readily accessible to around 60% of those who need it in England and Wales.

Gerry’s hope is that Evesham’s successful model will be adopted by other towns across the region, and the UK.

For the past decade Sally has actively campaigned to raise the profile of heart disease, telling her story to a national television audience on programmes such as This Morning, The Alan Titchmarsh Show and Daybreak.

She will be joined at the dinner by guest speaker Mark Webster, ITN journalist.

Craftspace presents ... Field Notes The programme, which tours to rural venues in March and October 2014, is a unique and experimental collaboration between artist Matthew Harris and composer Howard Skempton and performed by hand-picked musicians from Birmingham Contemporary Music Group.

Using old maps of Shropshire and graphic scores as common starting points, Skempton and Harris have engaged in a lively creative exchange resulting in complementary new works from each artist. Harris’ freestanding artwork, combining textiles and drawings, will frame the performance space as four of BCMG’s world-class musicians perform Skempton’s new piece, Field Notes.

Field Notes will tour to eight Arts Alive venues in Shropshire and Herefordshire in the spring and autumn of 2014, with a further four performances planned for rural venues in neighbouring counties.

CROSSING THE LINE: A REVIEW An autobiography by Bruce Reynolds Mike Stafford

B

ruce Reynolds’ autobiography comes more highly recommended than many true crime stories.

Where his genre-mates churn out tired jumbles of patois and platitudes, Reynolds won acclaim for his style, candidness and insight. Then again, perhaps it’s right we should expect something loftier from the mastermind behind Britain’s most celebrated robbery.

It’s now fifty years since the Great Train Robbery, and as the BBC’s recent dramatisation of the robbery and aftermath shows, the public has lost none of its interest in the crime. It was the zenith of Reynolds’ criminal career, and gave the book its title, the pleasingly dualistic ‘Crossing the Line.’ Fittingly, it’s also where Reynolds’ prologue comes in, with him dressed in beret and camouflage gear, lighting a Montecristo No.2 under the August moonlight, ruminating on having brought Cuba to Buckinghamshire.

Reynolds channelling Guevara in the opening scene is no mere rhetorical flourish. There is an anti-authoritarian streak throughout the book, from the young Bruce bemoaning unjust groundings for getting home after curfew, to railing against the bureaucratic, inhumane beatings dispensed by prison officers, and finally the unjust tactics of the ‘establishment’ in tracking down the train robbers. He hints that fingerprints were planted, and states that Bill Boal (sentenced to 24 years after being arrested with Roger Cordrey’s car) was innocent.

It’s a claim that is backed up by the other robbers, and indeed the total lack of reference to Boal elsewhere in Reynolds’ record of his criminal enterprises. Among criminals, Reynolds finds brotherhood, loyalty, camaraderie and friendship. He argues that this is in stark contrast to the careerism, scheming and hypocrisy of the establishment, although he does admit great respect for Tommy Butler, the detective who postponed retirement specifically to snare Reynolds.

Reynolds writes with humanity and openness. As a housebreaker, safe-cracker, and most significantly on the train robbery, he captures the adrenaline rush that came with the jobs. As a playboy, he recounts the glamour and glory that came with the crimes; frequenting exclusive clubs, drinking endless champagne, driving fast cars.

As a convict, he admits to the suicidal thoughts and buried-alive despair of prison. As a man, he concedes the misery and disappointment he brought to his family, and confesses to the tears shed at his grandmother’s death.

Such frankness in a true crime book is rare indeed, and Reynolds writes with warmth and wit throughout.

Of course, the critical question with any crime autobiography must be - ‘was it worth it?’ Reynolds refrains from judgement, although his final chapters lead the reader in a very clear direction. When his father was ill, it was Bruce’s law-abiding younger brother who took care of the family. Years of incarceration brought estrangement from wife Angela, born Frances, her permanent name change the legacy of years on the run.

Lifelong friends and comrades begin to die and fade away; nice guy Buster took his own life in 1994, believed

by Reynolds to have been disillusioned with the humdrum life of the law-abider. Treasurer Charlie Wilson was murdered in Marbella 1990; Ronnie Biggs, who outlived Reynolds by seventeen months, returned from exile rendered mute by ill-health. Perhaps most significantly, Reynolds expresses joy that son Nick didn’t follow in his criminal footsteps. In the accompanying photos, the young Reynolds is muscular and smart, decked out in Savile Row. By the second set, his passport photo is of a rather scrawny gent, greyed and decrepit. Was it worth it, then? In the final analysis, probably not - but it definitely makes for an engaging story. www.nudgemenow.com/contributor/mike-stafford
