aybe it’s the birdsong, or the first pink buds of cherry blossom but we’re seeking beauty this month. Our Escape the Chains feature showcases textile anarchist Rachel David and her statement garments, which can be found in her boutique in Leamington Spa. We have also visited Jill Wheelock-Lines in Worcester, who designs and curates modern and often bespoke pearl and diamond fine jewellery.

April’s edition celebrates some fantastic exhibitions and performances. We met Aubrey Powell, part of the design team behind some of the music industry’s most famous artwork. We’ve also got all the backstage gossip from the Alexandra Theatre’s production of West Side Story. Compton Verney’s impressive Moore Rodin exhibition will be on show right up until August 2014 too. It’s definitely worth a visit.

During that session you are also given the opportunity to have a look around the surgery to familiarise yourself and you will be given the chance to explain the nature of your fears and concerns; because everyone is different.

Tailored Support We will then tailor a solution or ‘support path’ to address your specific concerns.

It may involve choosing a form of sedation, or it may just require speaking to our nervous patients’ coach. We take into account all the information you give us; your fears, your concerns, your past experiences, and create a tailored solution that will help guide you through your experience.

IV sedation IV sedation is a pain-free injection which makes you feel like you’re asleep, without you actually being asleep. This means that you are unaware of what is going on around you, but can still follow the dentist’s instructions. Most people have no recollection of the treatment afterwards, making it perfect for anxious or nervous patients.

If you’re scared of injections we can offer you oral sedation in the form of tablets taken before a procedure.

I

’m sure I’m not the only person who has a hair gripe that’s bothered them for a long time. For some of my friends it’s flat, fine hair, for others its wiry, dry ends but for me, it’s the way my hair flicks out on one side. On days when I’ve spent a long time blow-drying and styling, I get very frustrated. But this month, my trip to Tim Scott-Wright’s salon, the Hair Surgery in Wollaston, finally answered my prayers.

According to Tim, ‘the consultation is vital’ and he wasted no time in asking me what I liked and disliked about my hair, my hair history and how I style my hair at home. From this, Tim was able to guide me to a new colour turning my warm, chestnut brown with red tones into a cool, dark chocolate brown with gold tones to bring out my blue eyes. Tim thought my jaw-length bob was just the right length to frame my face and enhance my features but he decided to add more shape to it, cutting into the ‘flick’ so it sits better. Using Clynol and Schwarzkopf products, my hair was coloured and washed. Tim swears by both ranges. He then used Bonacure Miracle Oil and Bonacure Amplifier to prep my hair for styling. The Miracle Oil makes hair smooth without making it greasy and the Amplifier has

The absolute key to gorgeous glowing skin is to keep it simple. Always begin with a strong primer, something like Get up & Go by Oskia (£64.50).

This product should be a staple in everyone’s everyday makeup routine as it wards off those early ageing signs and wrinkles by stimulating collagen production and protects the skin from everyday damage such as UV rays and pollution. hia seeds are native to South America and have been a staple in Mayan and Aztec diets for centuries. Today they draw the interest of many people for their health benefits and uses in cooking and as it turns out they are a very rich source of nutrients and antioxidants. Below are just some of the health benefits of chai seeds.

Omega 3 fatty acids

Chia seeds are high in polyunsaturated fats, especially omega 3 fatty acids. The lipid profile is 60% omega 3s, making them one of the richest plant-based sources of these fatty acids. The omega 3s in chai seeds can help reduce inflammation, enhance your memory performance and will help reduce cholesterol.

Antioxidants Antioxidants help protect the body from free-radicals, the ageing process and cancer. The high antioxidant properties give them a long shelf life and they can last at least 1 year without refrigeration.

Minerals Just two tablespoons of chia seeds contain calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and manganese. These minerals prevent hypertension, help you to maintain a healthy weight and will boost your metabolism.

Gluten-free They do not contain any gluten or grains, so can be consumed by people with that intolerance.

Blood sugar regulation Chia seeds can play an important role in regulating insulin levels. They can reduce insulin-resistance and decrease abnormally high levels of insulin in the blood.

Mood enhancer Chia seeds are an excellent source of tryptophan, an amino acid that promotes a good mood, good sleep and a sense of calm. The human body cannot produce this amino acid on its own so we need to get it from food sources. A one ounce serving of dried chia seeds contains 202 milligrams of tryptophan and these have the highest level of tryptophan than any other seeds.

t can be a desk in the corner of a room, a private library or a summer house at the end of the garden, but a home office must be fun and functional to be efficient. Sitting at the kitchen counter with your laptop will not inspire creativity, nor will it stop others preparing food on your paperwork. Easy organisers and decorative touches will ensure your work space is as stylish as it is functional. Consider the environments you work best in. Good development needs great design

“Good development needs great design, as much as a skilful designer needs a competent project, in order to create an inspiring and successful home.”

A

s planning surveyor, Andrew Temple-Cox and interior designer Klara Goldy chatted over coffee, they recognised their shared philosophies and embarked on a dynamic working relationship. Now, they’re working on six different projects, building their clientbase and transforming spaces. They are both adamant that from the very first pencil stroke in their client meetings to the fitting of the last door handle, that great design is at the forefront in every project they undertake.

Both free-spirited yet grounded, they apply their respective heritage and artisan development disciplines. One a surveyor and planning professional, the other in property development and interior design with a combined 50 years of practical project delivery experience between them.

Klara says, “We have the same ethos and approach. Our focus to obtain the same outcomes for our customer is the same. I often say that as an intuitive designer I’ve long understood my ability to shift the unseen energy in a room and to transform the way people feel about themselves and their space.”

Andrew says, “The bane of my professional life is transporting clients away from a simple project builder mentality. I refuse to use the word ‘extension’. As a planner, I wrestle to ensure the space is right, with the required level of finishes.

ESCAPE THE CHAINS Designer and maker, Rachel David Lucinda Bunn

T

extile anarchist, Rachel David, creates looks from the bold, to the bohemian to the unexpected. Each statement garment is designed and pieced together by Rachel herself.

With years of collecting buttons, lace, tartan, silk, wool, thread and ribbons, Rachel’s workspace, which is part of her boutique in Leamington’s Park Street, is a fashionista’s dream. The boutique is carefully curated to showcase Rachel’s unique talents. Rails line the walls, with sumptuous garments making their debut. Handmade and crafted from existing clothes, Rachel pieces together her coats, jackets and knitwear from beautiful and often vintage fabrics. No two garments are the same.

Rachel’s inspiration comes often from the original garment, and her large collection of costume and historical reference books.

She buys high quality, hardly worn items from designer sales and morphs them into unrecognisable creations adding details using techniques she’s mastered over the years. For Rachel, it’s all about colour. She says, ‘We are surrounded by dull, dreary monotones – the sky, our buildings and cars, we shouldn’t be wearing it as well.’

Rachel’s love of art, particularly folk art is evident in her designs too and you’ll be mystified and uplifted by her ingenuity with refreshing colour ways.

Rachel’s talents were recognised at the Painswick Wearable Art Competition, where she was presented with the winning prize

www.edgemagazine.org by artist Grayson Perry. Rachel says, ‘I made a wedding dress using lace handkerchiefs and brocade which I heavily overlayered with yet more lace. The other panels of the dress were used tea bags which I pressed and embroidered together.’

Her work is increasingly sought after by artists, musicians and those not afraid to stand out in the crowd. It has been seen on television – Folk singer June Tabor wore a Rachel David coat on Later...with Jools Holland – on stage and at film premieres.

Of course, there’s a reason why Rachel does what she does.

Her green politics is the thread that brings each of her pieces together. The textile industry’s exploitative systems have always encouraged Rachel to break the cycle and reuse fabrics in the traditions of our ancestors. And her commitment to doing so sets the tone for her highly original boutique, her own creations and the fine jewellery, socks and other accessories she has selected to complement them in store.

The Rachel David boutique is open Monday to Saturday from 10:30am to 5pm but Rachel is often in the shop from early in the morning to later into the evening. Last year Droitwich Spa held its first Food & Drink Festival in conjunction with the existing Music and Arts Festival and it was acknowledged by local residents, businesses and visitors to the town as a great success.

This summer The Droitwich Spa Festival Committee is putting together a fantastic programme of local food and drink, music and arts events in this historic salt town that will be even bigger and better than 2013.

It takes place in the town centre and pubs, clubs and venues around town and offers great opportunities and entertainment for both local residents and visitors.

BISTROT MODERN Le Bistrot Pierre: A review Helen Archer

O

ne look at the menu and you’ll wish one of the 11 Bistrot Pierres nationwide was on your doorstep. Luckily for us, there’s one in Stratford-upon-Avon and one in Leamington Spa. Expect flavour-packed cooking and a kitchen skilled in all the right departments.

The team travels to France regularly, sampling cuisine and picking up inspiration for their seasonal menu. The rustic restaurant is a simple space of bare-wood tables and natural furnishings. We went for Saucisse de Toulouse – soft poached egg with pan-fried Toulouse sausage with a warm tomato dressing and Moules au Roquefort – rope-grown mussels steamed in a mild Roquefort sauce served with crispy bacon lardons. The Toulouse sausage, a southwest speciality was perfectly seasoned, with the quality of the meat elevating the entire dish. The soft, oozing poached eggs and the sweet tomato dressing softened the flavour of the pork. Mussels deserve a rich, creamy sauce and the Roquefort did not disappoint, but the addition of the salty lardons added intrigue and textural contrast.

Le Bistrot Pierre’s menu is one at ease with itself and with some knowledgeable recommendations from our server Jordan, we had no trouble in choosing our mains; Filet de morue aux écrevisses – roasted fillet of cod with crayfish, sautéed mange tout and garden peas, tossed in a light mint and lemon butter, and Faux filet – the 9oz rib eye. The Filet de morue is a dish for people who really love fish;

the crayfish is sweet and tasty alongside the meaty cod, which was crisp on the skin with soft and understated on the other side. The medium rare steak was fantastic, the meat pink and mouth-watering and served with a wild mushroom and shallot jus. Spinning a classic French tale, this food makes its mark with assertive flavours and a fun and friendly approach to the cuisine.

The dessert menu has the same impact. We went for the Délice au chocolat – a warm chocolate torte served with blackcurrant ice cream and pouring chocolate and the Café Gourmand – mini portions of the menu and espresso coffee. The torte was rich but not heavy and the tartness of the ice cream balanced the flavours perfectly.

The mini dessert selection included a lemon tart, mini chocolate fondant, apple tart and strawberry sorbet. Tasty, elegant, simple and straightforward.

This is food made by people who like to eat.

The food looks good but it’s not the focus; the focus is how it tastes. At Le Bistrot Pierre each plate is deftly executed with a French modern style. So much so, you’ll want to eat here often.

T

here’s a new buzz word in the world of nutrition…Paleo!

Paleo is derived from ‘Paleolithic’ referring to the prehistoric period and in terms of a diet it is based on the idea that human genetics have hardly changed since the beginning of the agricultural revolution (i.e grains and cereals) when the Paleolithic era finished.

There is strong evidence coming out from Paleo experts that saturated fat is not as ’evil’ as we may think and that wholegrains are not as good for us as we are led to believe. But more and more people are feeling the benefits of following a Paleo diet and are improving their health, particularly those with chronic conditions.

The diet is based on the foods that our ancestors ate mostly meat, organ meat (offal), fish, eggs, plants, and traditional fats such as lard, coconut oil and olive oil. Bone broth soups figure highly in the diet and for those who can tolerate them, nuts and seeds and some fruit.

The diet does not include dairy and all its products – so out with the cheese, yoghurt and butter. All grains are to be avoided and this includes wheat, rice, oats, spelt, rye, barley, cous-cous and any other starchy cereal. In addition, all beans and pulses should be completely avoided, so vegetarians and vegans, this is not a diet for you.

Fats are a major source of energy to the body (as well glucose) and they help to support our immune system, provide us with healthy skin and hair and they help to keep our body temperature under control. We know that fat-free and low-fat products on the shelves of our supermarkets contain additives and sugars to make them taste good. In fact nutritional researchers have shown that there is more sugar added to a lowfat yogurt than the calorific value of the fat it would contain if it was full-fat. Sugar is converted to glucose, which, if it isn’t used up as energy just converts to body fat.

Going back to this ancestral way of eating has been explored by many scientists and nutrition experts all over the world and this Paleo way of life is growing all the time in the western world.

S

pring is a time of new life, a fresh and positive beginning, looking forward to the bright sunny days ahead. Let’s at least try to be optimistic. In the vineyard, the soils are warming up, the sap is rising and the leaves are beginning to push through the buds in what’s known as bud burst or bud break. It’s both a time of positive excitement and stark anxiety. Within a few days, if the temperatures are sufficiently high, the leaves separate from the bud and emergent tendrils unfurl looking for light and the ‘vintage’ is underway.

These tender shoots, however, are sorely vulnerable to spring frosts. If all goes well the wine-maker is on the first couple of rungs of the wine-making ladder.

I’m putting away my woollies and wellies; my recipes for hearty casseroles and winter soups will not be used for a while and down in the cellar. I’m looking at lighter reds and fresh whites. At this time of year, we might be drinking the newly bottled white and rosé wines from

grapes picked the previous year, from both Europe and the Southern Hemisphere. Fresh and floral aromas with fruity flavours on the palate are a great way to say goodbye to the winter months and to welcome the longer, sunnier, brighter days ahead.

Look to warmer countries like Spain and Portugal, to Argentina and Australia. Look to grape varieties you don’t know for a change, perhaps a Torrontés from Salta in Argentina; citrusy, spicy and delightfully aromatic. Or a Fernão Pires (weirdly also known as Maria Gomes) from the Tejo in Portugal with its exotic fruit character and lovely freshness. And, of course, there’s no need to ignore the reds. Look out for such juicy numbers as Aglianico from Campania in Italy or Agioritiko from the Gaia Estate in the Peloponnese, and Portugal has literally hundreds of unusual varieties, well, unusual to us, and the wines are often very good value.

hateau Impney makes an iconic impression on the Worcestershire landscape. The 19th century hotel has completed the first phase of its major refurbishment, modernising half of its accommodation, reinventing the restaurant and updating all function rooms. MIND THE GAP Reducing the digital divide Brett Laniosh

F

or me to receive an invitation to attend a presentation in London is not that unusual, but this one was from Lord Putnam so I was a little more intrigued and decided to attend. When I arrived at the Microsoft Offices I found that the introduction was being given by the inventor of the World Wide Web Tim Berners-Lee. Yes, I got a photo. The event launched “Mind the Gap”, a campaign to highlight the fact that half a million school children do not have the internet at home and yet are increasingly being set homework to do online. The digital divide has been a major challenge for world governments especially as so much of our lives now revolve around the internet. Think how many times you go online – to pay your bills, to order goods, to talk to others or to look up things for example. Places of learning are key players in reducing the divide. For some years I’ve been working with schools to promote Get Online@ Home, an initiative backed

by Microsoft (and a key part of Mind the Gap) to provide desktop computers with flat screen monitors or laptops for £99 or £149

respectively to families. These are fully refurbished computers and come with Windows 7 and Microsoft Office. As these computers are broadband ready they are ideal for families who don’t have a computer or who are looking for a second PC so that children can do their homework without being distracted by other family members queuing up to go online. I fully support the Mind the Gap campaign and will be promoting Get Online@ Home with schools to target parents. After all, no child should be at a disadvantage through something as easily fixed as access to the internet. Mind the Gap has been jointly launched by the e-Learning Foundation charity and Quib.ly a new education website. More details at catshill.com/mindthegap.

Quib.ly is a useful website for parents to help them in the day to day rigours of bringing up children. It is a place where questions can be asked on a variety of topics and expert advice can be sought. The questions are varied in both depth and the range covered. Being a multi-national site there can be a US flavour to some of the questions but I can see how Quib.ly could be useful for a parent trying to look up information that they’ve been unable to find elsewhere. To give you an idea of the site here are a few questions asked and answered: Do social media sites like Facebook and Twitter have a positive effect on the children’s future? If male and female brains are different, should schooling be single sex? How valuable is knitting as a skill and hobby for children?

How can I keep my autistic seven year old daughter entertained?

Is the PlayStation 4 good value for money?

As you can see a wide range of topics are covered. A site to watch.

The results come in the wake of St George’s recent full Independent Schools Council inspection. Pupils from many nationalities and ethnic backgrounds get on very well together in an atmosphere of ease and harmony, demonstrating a growing emotional maturity.

The teaching is good and consequently pupils of all ages make good progress in response to a good curriculum.’

The inspectors went on to praise the positive attitude of pupils towards learning, stating that students take their studies seriously, are focused and co-operate with one another, willing to tackle the unfamiliar and enjoy challenges.

However, life is not all about academia at St George’s.

Students also enjoy weekly extra-curricular activities and are able to choose from an exciting range of 25 different sessions, including some out of school activities such as skiing, rowing, squash and golf, as well as a number of inschool clubs including science, computing, DT, arts and crafts, and music.

St George’s School is proud of its students - their achievements and continued successes. The ISC inspectors said teaching throughout the school is excellent. They recognised the time taken by teachers to know every pupil well, creating a stimulating and supportive environment for learning, tailored to the specific needs of each individual.

Mental illness does not discriminate – it affects people from all backgrounds, irrespective of age, gender, intelligence, race and religion. It comes in many forms, including depression and anxiety among many others and unfortunately it also carries a lot of stigma. Mental health affects not only individuals but also families, friends, employers and carers.

Established for over 50 years, Birmingham Mind is continually seeking ways to challenge the stigma of mental health and support those struggling with a variety of conditions. Speaking on behalf of the charity Chief Executive Officer Helen Wadley states the importance of the charity relationship with the people needing a service: ‘Birmingham Mind is a charity that embodies resilience. It always has and always will have the person at the heart of what it does.’

The charity prides itself on offering a number of supportive services locally, with over 3,000 people benefiting from the services last year alone.

Services offered by the charity include the wellbeing and recovery service, running every day across the city and includes depression and anxiety courses, voice hearers support groups and other supportive activities that enable people suffering mental distress to take control of their mental health for a happier and healthier lifestyle.

The charity’s floating support services provide support to people struggling to maintain tenancies due to their mental health issues. Whilst short-term and long-term residential accommodation is also available; supporting people towards independence and resilience against the onset of mental health problems and ensuring those enduring mental health issues are supported and

Birmingham Mind also delivers external training to employers and voluntary organisations wishing to raise mental health awareness, gain practical skills to support people in mental distress and challenge the stigma associated with mental health.

THE STRATFORD LITERARY FESTIVAL 2014 Journeys to thrill and inspire

t’s become almost impossible to separate Stratfordupon-Avon with the work of William Shakespeare. But, for a few days each year, the Bard takes a backseat, as dozens of writers from across the globe come together to celebrate the Stratford Literary Festival. Now in its 7th year, the event is going from strength to strength and shows no signs of slowing down.

The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Journeys’, in all its interpretations. Events will be running throughout the nine days of the festival, ranging from talks about the future of the written word through to the history of gardening (via everything in-between).

Beginning on the 26th April, headline speakers appearing at this year’s festival will include; the Kinks’ Ray Davies, award-winning journalist Gavin Esler, comedian and writer Tim Brooke-Taylor, Labour MP Alan Johnson and Baroness Shirley Davies. The festival will also feature topical panel discussions, creative writing workshops for aspiring authors and open mic poetry nights, all taking place in venues in and around the town. Festival director Annie Ashworth is looking forward to the event, saying “This year has more events on a wider range of topics than ever before.”

As well as all this, the festival is planning to find out the nation’s favourite novel to travel with. Having launched a poll on www.onefortheroad.org.uk last month, the winning novel will be announced during the nine-day celebration. Annie Ashworth said, “we’ll be asking all the authors who come to the festival to pick their favourite too. We all love to take a book with us when we go away and I think this poll will keep people guessing our favourite right till the end!”

The festival will be finishing on Sunday 4th May with a special ‘Children’s Book Day’. Taking place at The Croft School, guests will include illustrators Nick Sharratt and Axel Scheffler, writer Philip Ardagh. Rounded off with a special performance of The Wimpy Kid Show, the event promises to be fun for all the family.

With such a huge choice of things to see and do, the Stratford Literary Festival promises to thrill and inspire.

Henry Moore, Three Piece Sculpture

A MATCH MADE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE Moore Rodin at Compton Verney Sam Skillings

rue to its mission to share its passion for art with as many people as possible Compton Verney will be celebrating its 10th anniversary season with an exhibition of two giants of modern sculpture, Henry Moore and Auguste Rodin. Their sculptures will be on display in the stunning ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped parkland at Compton Verney with accompanying exhibition of works inside the galleries.

This awe-inspiring exhibition includes important loans from Musée Rodin, Paris, the Henry Moore Foundation, Hertfordshire and public collections throughout the UK. Amongst the works on display are Rodin’s magnificent bronze sculpture Monument to the Burghers of Calais (1889), on loan from the Royal Parks, a coup as it is rarely removed from its usual location outside the Houses of Parliament in London. Magnificent works by Moore include the monumental Three Piece Sculpture: Vertebrae (1968) and stunning The Arch (1969).

The works will be sighted within Compton Verney’s complementing parkland, challenging and creating new perspectives to vistas ‘Capability’ Brown formed in the 1760s. As well as key sculptures, the exhibition inside displays an extensive range of drawings by both artists

and a set of photographs taken by Moore of his cast of Rodin’s Walking Man at his home in Perry Green. From both there is no doubt that Moore’s debt to Rodin was profound “I began to realise that a lot of things one might be using and being influenced by are, compared with Rodin, altogether too easy, so that as time has gone on, my admiration for Rodin has grown and grown.”

The exhibition draws parallels between the artists’ treatment of the figure which is revealed through a beautiful collection of models the artists made for larger works. These include maquettes for two of Rodin’s most famous works, The Gates of Hell and a final study for the sculpture of Balzac commissioned by Emile Zola at the height of Rodin’s fame in the 1880s. The exhibition also includes beautifully formed models by Moore, including the iconic Mother and Child works, a subject which he returned to again and again throughout his lifetime, alongside studies for abstract and reclining figures. These works are drawn together to explore the exhibition themes of interlocking forms, the torso, finished/ unfinished and the figure in landscape.

Visitors will also be able to see what inspired both these artists through a display brought together by Moore’s daughter Mary. This reveals that both Moore and Rodin

were keen collectors of antiquities and found objects and reflects their contrasting working methods; Moore being drawn to African, Oceanic, pre-Columbian and Cycladic sculpture, which Rodin concentrated on classical antiquities.

Dr Steven Parissien, Director at Compton Verney said: “We are delighted to be hosting this awe-inspiring exhibition in celebration of our 10th anniversary. This is a rare opportunity for audiences throughout the UK to see the works by two of the greatest sculptors of the twentieth century together, and I cannot think of a better setting for them. The works have been placed in our landscape to take full advantage of Capability Brown’s fabulous parkland, enabling visitors to see the works relating to one another as well as to their historic setting. We are looking forward to welcoming visitors from near and far, who will be able to get up close to the works and to appreciate their scale and construction.

Having an exhibition installed within our galleries which also exploits our incomparable landscape is something that we have not done since our first year in 2004, with Peter Greenaway, and it is an excellent way of celebrating our 10th birthday.”

The exhibition has been organised by the Henry Moore Foundation in collaboration with the Musée Rodin, Paris.

The catalogue is published by the Henry Moore Foundation and Compton Verney and will retail at £17.50. Running alongside the exhibition are a series of related events and activities. etween 1968 and 1983, Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell and the late Storm Thorgerson produced some of the most iconic album covers of the period. Having worked with Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, 10cc and most notably Pink Floyd, Hipgnosis was wildly successful. St Paul’s Gallery’s latest exhibition showcases new unseen prints from Scorpions, Strawbs and Wishbone Ash as well as a new collection of 10cc covers including Sheet Music, How Dare You! and Deceptive Bends. The Hipgnosis pun represents the contradiction between ‘hip’, meaning new and cool and ‘gnosis’ relating to ancient learning, which ultimately mirrors the creative struggle and symmetry of Storm and Po’s partnership. Storm’s world of illusions combined with Po’s practical visual puns made the twosome pioneers in photo manipulation and packaging techniques. Here’s what Po had to say when we met him at the launch.

Have you always been a creative person?

Yes, always. I started out working for television as a scenic artist in set design. Then I shared a

flat in London with Storm and Syd Barrett, one of the founding members of Pink Floyd. We got involved in experimenting with photographing, in a very amateur way. It was the ‘Summer of Love’ and there was a huge revolution going on both in music and culturally, with psychedelic drugs and things like visual art. Peter Blake who did Sergeant Pepper for the Beatles, he really started it because that cover was so radical. We started creating surreal imagery, very much influenced by Dali and Magritte. Maybe because of the revolution of the time, it just caught on.

So what was your relationship with Storm like?

Was there always a creative balance?

It was a very volatile relationship. We were very different characters. Storm was very much an ‘ideas’ person. I was the photographer. We loved each other like brothers and I always thought we were like Mick and Keith or Robert and Jimmy.

www.edgemagazine.org You used experimental techniques for the majority of your work, were there any times when the vision and execution just didn’t come together?

You spent a lot of time musicians and creatives, was there anyone who stood out to you as really special?

Yes, there were a bunch of turkeys that will never see the light of day. I’m not trying to compare us here but when you look at Picasso or Francis Bacon, the amount of canvases they destroyed or are not considered good enough for exhibit or sale, you can see that is the norm when you’re continually experimenting.

Peter Gabriel. He was a joy to work for. And the reason being was that he immersed himself in the process of working with us. Peter Gabriel has a fantastic sense of humour and to watch him and Storm together, playing off each other was a joy to behold. It was a cross between some surrealist, dadaist conversation and a working men’s club in the north of England.

How did you put art before business?

The beauty of an album cover was that most were 12 inches by 24 inches. And that’s a big canvas to work on. And when people got home, they would explore the cover, they’d look inside, they’d look at the lyrics, they’d look at photographs and posters and whatever was given away inside. The only way a person could have some understanding of the band that they loved was either through musical papers like Rolling Stone or by what they saw on the album cover. Well, we were there in 1967 and there was no way we were going to put a band on the front cover of anything. And of course this was so antiestablishment; record companies and management were down on us like you couldn’t believe.

If there are two forces in art, beauty and order and chaos and instinct, where was the balance with Hipgnosis?

With Hipgnosis, the balance tipped towards the chaos side. A lot of our pictures were contrived in a sense that we always believed in creating images that were sharp focus front to back which is what makes them very different. We thought a good idea is a good idea and we’d often present the same idea to different bands. I always remember Robert Plant turning over an image I’d given him as a rough drawing and on the back was crossed out Wishbone Ash, 10cc, Pink Floyd, and he said ‘Have you shown this to all these other bands?’, I said, ‘Yeah’, he said, ‘You’re a bit of a f***ing chancer, aren’t you?’.

Be-Bop, Drastic Plastic

Is there a piece for you that stands out as representing the zeitgeist of the ‘60s and ‘70s?

Dark Side of the Moon is the obvious example. It’s become such an iconic image. The band loved it immediately. It’s actually a very uninteresting artwork, just line-drawings on bits of tracing paper.

Without Pink Floyd we couldn’t have done it but people tend to know that image better than they know the songs on that album. And that’s not putting Pink Floyd down, that just shows that that image has transcended 45 years.

What’s coming up for you this year?

I have two big projects coming up. One is a Pink Floyd exhibition. I can’t discuss it but it’s going to be enormous. And the other thing is that I’m directing a film for Monty Python. We’re shooting at the O2 and creating a movie out of that.

West Side Story at the New Alexandra Theatre Fiona McCartney

T

hink of mid-century musical theatre and you’d probably think of a tuneful slice of escapism, lavish sets and eye catching costumes, toe-tapping dance routines; a boy; a girl, a love story. West Side Story’s 1957 opening marked a significant departure from that formula, and set a new template for the modern musical.

Here, 55 years on, the musical sensation with music

by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim is once again touring the UK as part of a major revival lead by an all-new energetic young cast, visiting the New Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham in April 2014.

West Side Story changed the course of musical theatre when it opened on Broadway in 1957 and it still remains one of the most successful stage shows of all time. The 1961 film version won ten Academy Awards.

Based on Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is set on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and explores the rivalry between two teenage gangs; one white, the other Puerto Rican. When Tony falls in love with Maria; the sister of the rival gang’s leader, the feud takes on a new dimension, and as their love blossoms so begins a fatal journey overshadowed by violence and hatred. The score includes the unforgettable songs ‘Maria’, ‘Tonight’, ‘Somewhere’, ‘America’ and ‘I Feel Pretty’.

by Jerome Robbins. Leading the cast are Katie Hall as ‘Maria’, Louis Maskell as ‘Tony’, Djalenga Scott as ‘Anita’ and Jack Wilcox as ‘Riff’. Katie Hall was most recently seen as ‘Christine’ in the national tour of “The Phantom of the Opera”. She was a boot camp contestant for the BBC1’s search for ‘Nancy’ in “I’d Do Anything” and was a final round contender for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s search for the Eurovision entry, “Your Country Needs You”, also for BBC1. She has also played ‘Christine’ in “The Phantom of the Opera” at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London and ‘Cosette’ in “Les Misérables” at the Queen’s Theatre in the West End, on the 25th Anniversary tour and also at the O2.

Katie spoke of her love of the role. She said: “I haven’t had one day where I’ve come into work and thought ‹oh God, I’ve got to sing those songs again...! It’s amazing, and the music is so lovely to sing. Bernstein just knows how to write for the voice, it just feels easy because it’s been done so well. I really like I Have a Love. That sits nicely in my voice.”

She’s far from what I’m like, I’m from Peterborough and that’s quite far from Puerto Rico. We sat down with our director and just asked ourselves questions like ‘What was it like in America at the time, who was there?’ and it didn’t matter if it wasn’t true fact it just helped us to gain a broader knowledge of things. I didn’t read books like Louis did...”

Louis Maskell has previously appeared in the national tour of “Scrooge: The Musical” and “Iolanthe” at Wilton’s Music Hall.

Louis is delighted to play the ever optimistic character of Tony. He said: “In the show, Tony is quite an individual, he started the Jets and then left the gang to pursue his dreams and aspirations - obviously in those times that›s pretty hard to do. He’s a fantastic part to play because he not only oozes this masculinity but he also gets to fall in love... and so quickly, which I think is rather rare these days, that sort of love at first sight moment.”

This production features the entire original Jerome Robbins choreography. Over Christmas 2012, this production played a completely sold out season at the Chatelet Theatre in Paris, having previously sold out in cities around the world, including Sydney, Melbourne, Tokyo, Berlin, Madrid, and Beijing. This production was last seen in the UK in 2008/9 when it also sold out for a season at Sadler’s Wells and played to capacity houses throughout a year- long UK tour.

This production is directed and choreographed by Joey McKneely using the full original Jerome Robbins

choreography. Joey is the former assistant to Jerome Robbins. He has worked extensively on Broadway where his choreography credits include “Smokey Joe’s Café” (Tony Award nomination) and “The Boy From Oz” starring Hugh Jackman. His other credits include Hal Prince’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Whistle Down the Wind” and Nicholas Hytner’s production of “Twelfth Night”.
