EDITOR’S NOTE

A

utumn is a time to take in the fresh, crisp air and prepare ourselves for the cold months ahead. For those of us sensitive to the changing seasons, it’s important to enjoy what autumn brings; new beginnings, time at home and a focus on within. This new season might inspire a desire to learn to cook and this issue of Edge includes an opportunity for 50% off classes at The Secret Kitchen. You might also be interested in investing more time in art and the Barber Institute of Fine Art has a fantastic exhibition to get you started-Rebel Visions: The War Art of CRW Nevinson. Eating out means enjoying delicious, hearty plates of good pub food at The Chequers Inn, Fladbury, sumptuous Italian feasts at Portofino, Droitwich and rediscovering Ostler’s Bistro, Worcester.

“Losing this weight has given me my confidence back. I now walk with a spring in my step...” They say it takes just one photograph. In my case, a photograph taken by my son at Christmas was my wake-up call. I realised I didn’t want to be that person any more. The last straw was being unable to try on my new slippers due to my size. I enjoyed walking, but my knees often hurt and I felt nauseous if I walked at a pace. My confidence was at an all-time low, and I convinced myself that I would never lose weight. But I wanted to try one more time. I had tried and failed dieting before, but I made sure my head was in the right place this time. I did this by saying to myself, “I’m doing this for me, and only me.” I did not like what I saw in that photograph – I wanted to be healthier and fitter. I wanted to be happy. I researched the Weight Watchers meetings in my area, and began to get excited about the prospect. I couldn’t wait, so I selected one that started that week. The journey that would change my life was about to begin. I kept a diary of my journey. Here are a few snippets: 1st January 2014 Had wine and port with nibbles and dips on New Year’s Eve. Went for a couple of long walks – nothing too strenuous or fast; just getting used to exercising more. 5th January So far, so good this week. My only concern is, once the enthusiasm and novelty of this new eating plan wears off and becomes boring, the lure of crisps and bars of chocolates will beckon once more.

9th February Today I discovered I have lost a total of 20lbs – I felt so thrilled – completely elated and so proud of myself. I can now put my slippers on without losing my breath! April My husband and I went on a holiday. After coming home, at my first weigh-in I was 13lbs lighter, which was brilliant. 30th June When I lost 50lbs, I announced my happy news to friends and family. The wonderful ladies I work with weighed out 50lbs in butter and potatoes to show me how much weight I had lost. They then told me to “try to pick it up!” It was incredibly hard to do, and to think that my poor body was carrying this weight around for all that time. 17th August 2014 This morning I received my Gold Key and certificate from my wonderful leader Debbie Onions, I lost a total of 4 stone 2lbs. As I reached the end of my own personal road, I looked back in awe at my own achievements. I overcame all my negative

15 minutes to prepare 1 hour 15–25 minutes to cook Serves 4 1 Preheat the oven to gas mark 6/200ºC/fan 180ºC. Trim the bases from the squashes so they will stand up on a baking tray. Cut off the tops to form lids, scoop out the seeds with a spoon and discard. Mist the insides with cooking spray and season. Replace the lids and wrap the squashes in foil. Bake for 40 minutes, or until the flesh feels tender when pierced with a sharp knife. Allow to cool a little. 2 Mist a large saucepan with cooking spray and sauté the onions and garlic for 2–3 minutes. Add the celery, leek and carrot and cook for a further 2–3 minutes until starting to soften. Add the stock, season, cover and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15–20 minutes. 3 Scoop out most of the squash flesh, leaving a layer at the bottom. Retain the shells. Add the flesh to the soup and cook for a further 10–15 minutes. Remove from the heat and purée until smooth. 4 Toast the pumpkin seeds in a nonstick frying pan for 2–3 minutes or until golden. Remove from the pan and allow to cool. Serve the soup in the squash shells, topped with the yogurt and seeds.

Relaunch for Aesthetics A night to remember Lucinda Bunn

A

esthetics in Solihull had reason to celebrate last month, officially launching their refurbished salon! The expansion onto the second floor of the Dovehouse premises has given much needed space to accommodate the growing number of clients wishing to book in with their talented team, plus a designated Hair Extension area to transform your hair to any length or thickness you desire, a Powder Room to freshen up and change if you’re headed straight out after your appointment and a bespoke colour bar to create the beautiful ombres, placement colour and pastels they are so well known for. The launch event saw guests walk the red carpet into the salon before they were greeted with cocktails. Frank Sinatra tribute performer, Paul Holgate, kicked the event off with soulful swing, while violet bellinis and lychee martinis made their way around the hairdressing emporium. The Aesthetics team, including creative directors Sarah and Adrian Bowron, welcomed the Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Mrs Kate Wild, as well as members of the press and all of their loyal customers. With goodie bags from Redken, GHD and Aston & Fincher, each guest went home with a treat.

The salon expansion also includes shiatsu massage backwash chairs and a temperature controlled environment. All customers are treated to the complimentary drinks menu and free Wi-Fi as they receive their treatments. The salon revamp maintains the contemporary luxe interior, synonymous with the Aesthetics salon and its nominations for salon of the year for the last two years, but now with added space, the team can take their services to an even higher level. Creative director Sarah Bowron says, ‘It has always been about our clients and it was the right time to create a bigger and better Aesthetics, whilst staying true to the Aesthetics brand. We had a great time at the relaunch party and we want to thank all of our customers for making it a night to remember.’ To book an appointment and experience a visit at Aesthetics, call 0121 7078866. 347 Warwick Road Solihull West Midlands B91 1BQ www.aesthetics-solihull.com

The white eyeliner trend Rebecca Burden

W

earing white eyeliner may seem like an unusual trend but in reality it can amp up an otherwise plain look and really ensure that you have unique eyes. During fashion week, white liner has been used by make-up artists to create anything from simple chic to dramatic evening looks that are all wearable and easily translated into everyday life. The easiest way to try this trend is to line your water line in white. This really opens up the eye and when teamed with a coloured lid really makes the colour of your eyes pop. If you do have smaller eyes this will become a go-to weapon in your makeup arsenal and you’ll really notice a difference. You can simplify this water line technique even more and just place it around the inner

14

www.edgemagazine.org

corner of your eyes. This trick attracts light into your eyes and if you really can’t bear liner in your waterline this is the option for you. Another plus is that this creates a dramatic illusion to the eyes, opening them up and elongating them without screaming that white eyeliner is just how you’ve done it. If you are a devotee of black liner this next tip may be the key for you. To really make your traditional black cat eye liner demand attention add white liner just above in a parallel line. This makes the black appear darker and your eyelid appear wider for a doe-eyed pin-up look. Amp it up even more, ditch your black liner and opt for a colour line such as purple or green. These colours combined with the white liner demand attention and have maximum impact when teamed with a nude lip.

For the top level of drama ditch the black cat eye liner and go solely for the white. Now this one isn’t for the faint-hearted but will certainly ensure your fashionista status at the next evening function you attend. White eyeliner is truly versatile and in trying some of these simple suggestions you will be able to add a touch of the catwalk to your everyday looks. As an alternative, if the idea of white scares you try a nude or champagne coloured liner first to practise the looks and build from there. Both colours are more subtle and a better option for mature ladies as it appears more natural and muted. www.bbyb.co.uk

For the Roses The benefits of rose water Mel Taffs

R

ose water offers a variety of health and skincare benefits, which is why many health and beauty products include it in their list of ingredients. It has a pleasant fragrance which makes the antibacterial and antiseptic properties even more appealing and enjoyable.

Healing Sickness If you have a mild sore throat make rosewater tea with rose petals. Pour approximately 150ml of boiling water into a cup with 5g of rose petals. Allow this too steep for 30 minutes before drinking. If the flowers are close to producing seed, they provide high amounts of vitamin A, vitamin B3, vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E. they also have citric acid, bioflavonoids, zinc and tannins. You may drink this tea to get relief from tension, ulcers, heart conditions, infection, diarrhoea, indigestion and circulation problems. Moisturizer Your skin will benefit greatly from a moisturizer infused with rosewater. Just add a few drops to your regular body lotion. Rosewater can be used on oily or dry skin and it can relieve dermatitis by maintaining your skins pH balance. Skin Cleanser and Toner You can use rosewater to make a healthy all natural skin cleanser and toner. Combine 1 cup of rosewater with ten drops of rose essential oil for a skin toner that can help skin inflammation, lines and wrinkles. Apply the rose water skin cleanser to your face or body then rinse with clear tepid water. Fragrance Rosewater has a pleasant all natural scent. Combine 1 quarter of a cup of rosewater with 5 drops of jasmine essential oil and mix well. Store the mixture in a sealed dark glass bottle to keep it fresh. The scent is light, refreshing and invigorating. Eye Irritation Soak cotton wool in in rosewater and hold it against the infected eye; it will reduce the redness and soreness. For cooking Aside from being used in many fragrances and cosmetics rosewater is also used in cooking for its flavour. The Middle East is one of the biggest producers of rosewater and you will find it in many Middle Eastern dishes such as Turkish delight and baklava. Healing Properties There is a surprisingly long list of things that rosewater treats. Such as digestion, the heart, the liver, appetite, bruising, cuts and wounds, veins, limb joints, head pain and the mind. In Iran rosewater is sold by traders at the side of the road on stalls like coca cola and most of the housewives have a constant supply in their medicine cabinet. Apparently they drink rosewater first thing in the morning to set themselves up for the day. They also said that rosewater was like wine: if kept in the right conditions it would mature and improve with age.

Beauty, Dignity, Confidence Embrace is making a difference

E

mbrace was launched in 2013 by a breast cancer survivor as a “one stop shop” stocking luxury items, useful products and gorgeous gifts for women affected by cancer. Products available include mastectomy lingerie and swimwear, headwear, wigs, and paraben free skincare, all from hand-picked, high quality brands and presented in a stylish boutique.

Owners Julie, Lisa and Paula are thrilled at the response from their customers and look forward to meeting and helping even more women. They remain passionate in their belief that women going through cancer treatment should be better served by retailers – and that all women, whatever their size or shape, should be wearing a properly fitted bra.

Embrace has been well received in its first year of trading, but there’s also been a surprise: this speciality boutique has had mainstream appeal. Their skincare and gifts are suitable for everyone. And a huge demand for mainstream lingerie that is not readily available on the high street has resulted in Embrace stocking bra sizes from 30 to 50 and AAA to LL, bridal lingerie, maternity bras, shapewear and sports bras.

For more information about checking your breasts see Embrace’s blog – www.embracecancerbeauty.co.uk/blog/ embrace-the-week-checking-yourbreasts-a-gentle-reminder 23 Reindeer Court Worcester WR1 2DS 01905 619031

INTRODUCING THE PARLOUR At Hampton Manor

H

ampton Manor are delighted to open their Parlour this month, which provides the most luxurious stylish room, overlooking the gardens, in which to enjoy Afternoon Tea daily and Champagne in the evenings. Parlour derives from the Old French word parlour or parler (“to speak) and was the place set aside for speaking with someone. In the 18th & 19th century, parlour rooms were found in only the finest houses and frequently displayed a family’s best furnishings, works of art and other status symbols. Of course today a Parlour conjures up fantasies of endless flavours of ice cream and waffles! Our Parlour is about the marriage of all of those things! Sink into a deep sofa for a long chat by the roaring fire, spoil yourself with an indulgent afternoon tea, or sip away the evening with a glass of fizz. Eden Hotel Collection wins Small Hotel Group of the Year at the AA Hospitality Awards

E

“Our commitment to delivering unrivalled and exceptional guest experiences is at the heart of everything we do and it’s what keeps our guests coming back time and time again.

The award recognises small hotel companies which have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to improve and develop their portfolio of hotels, while maintaining a high level of consistency throughout the group.

“The knowledge and experience of the AA’s inspectors is unrivalled and an AA rating is one of the most trusted forms of quality and service recognition in the hospitality industry. This achievement is an enormous source of pride to everyone who works at the Eden Hotel Collection,” added Mark.

den Hotel Collection was awarded the coveted accolade of AA Small Hotel Group of the Year 2014 at the AA Hospitality Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London last month.

The Eden Hotel Collection is a privatelyowned group of nine luxury hotels across the Midlands, the Cotswolds and the South West. Managing Director Mark Chambers collected the award on behalf of the company at a glittering event to celebrate excellence in the hotel and hospitality industry hosted by TV newsreader Fiona Bruce. Mark said: “We are delighted and extremely proud to have been recognised by the AA Hospitality Awards, which is hugely prestigious for our industry. To win this award in a highly competitive market place is a great achievement and one which I’m honoured to share with each and every member of our fantastic team.

26

www.edgemagazine.org

The AA award win caps a highly successful year of expansion and investment for Eden. In April the company announced a planned £13.5m investment in the 35-bedroom Tides Reach Hotel in Salcombe, South Devon. The site is being redeveloped to create a 50-bedroom luxury beachfront hotel and spa. And in June it acquired the 64-bedroom Bovey Castle in the heart of Dartmoor National Park and is planning a major investment in the country house estate, which today includes an 18-hole championship golf course, spa, country lodges and an outdoor pursuits centre.

Praising Eden Hotel Collection’s success in winning the award, Head of AA Hotel Services, Simon Numphud, said: “We are delighted to recognise the Eden Hotel Collection with this prestigious award. This delightful small group has consistently re-invested in their hotels year on year with some impressive refurbishments. In addition, and most importantly, the strength of their hotels is their individuality and the high standards of hospitality and service delivered by their dedicated and professional teams.” Eden Hotel Collection is part of The Rigby Group plc. Diversifying from a wholesale technology business, Rigby Group has evolved into a £1.8bn portfolio business which comprises technology, airports, hotels, real estate, finance and aviation. It is one of the largest family-owned businesses in the UK and was named Family Business of the Year in 2013. To find out more about Eden Hotel Collection go to www.edenhotelcollection.com

Watches from left to right: Lemania single pusher chronograph Cyma Smiths Omega Jaeger-LeCoultre

Military Time Pieces by Adrian Hailwood, Watch Business Manager at Fellows Auctioneers.

W

ith so many of the new wristwatches sold today being treated as fashion items rather than heirlooms, it is no surprise that watch aficionados are after something with a little more ‘soul’. A popular subject for collectors is ‘watches supplied to the military’, either in the UK or abroad. This offers a wide choice of ages and prices with watches that are distinctly ‘anti-fashion’. They are, by their nature, unfussy and built to last. More importantly, these watches have a story behind them having accompanied their owners in situations which were literally ‘life or death’. Although military personnel wealthy enough to have their own watch would have carried them into battle in any era, the first ‘issued’ watches were for WW1, both pocket watches and ‘wristlets’. Indeed it was the popularity of these trench wristwatches, essentially a lady’s fob watch turned through ninety degrees, which brought about the end of the pocket watch. It was so much easier to read the time from your wrist rather than under layers of clothing that it really could save your life. By WW2, the Ministry of Defence issued a list of specifications that any supplier had to adhere to regarding accuracy, durability and

legibility. Seventeen companies had their watches issued to military personnel with a different engraving on the back for each of the services; ATP for the army, AM for the air force and HS for the navy. In addition to a basic three hand watch, the requirements of war demanded other complications such as chronographs for pilots, bomb aimers and artillerymen, and early experiments in waterproof watches for divers. In the last year of the war, new watches began to arrive with higher specifications, including water resistance. These WWW or ‘wrist watch waterproof’ army watches are now very popular with collectors. Twelve companies supplied these and those from brands such as Omega, JaegerLeCoultre and IWC are highly prized. As before, separate designations existed for the air force and navy. These were issued in smaller numbers and so can command higher values. As the war ended and the armed forces moved on to other regional conflicts, further refinements were made to the issue watches. British-made watches became available from Smiths; values for which have risen sharply in the last few years as collectors recognise them as the last examples of great British watchmaking.

Mention must be made of the watches supplied to the forces of other countries. The German army wrist watches were poor quality compared to the British, but the Luftwaffe received high quality watches which are now very valuable. In the 1950s the French air force issued chronographs made by a small group of companies that included Breguet. While all of these are seen as desirable classics, the Breguets are very sought after. At the other end of the price range, the Hamilton and Zodiac watches supplied to the US army can prove great value. Inevitably the progress of technology has meant that these rugged little machines have been replaced by supremely accurate, reliable and cheap quartz. With over sixty years of conflict and evolution, the military watch collector will never be short of choice. The pictured military wrist watches will all be offered for sale at Fellows auction of Vintage & Modern Wrist Watches on Monday 20th October at 11am. BUON APPETITO Portofino: A Review Lucie Abu-Zalaf

W

hen the babysitter arrived just before we went out, to say she was slightly alarmed when we told her that we were going to Portofino, would be an understatement. Fortunately calm was quickly restored when we explained that this was a restaurant in Droitwich, not that we were clearing off for a break on the Italian Riviera. Portofino, which is located on the Worcester Road and has its own car park behind, is decorated in a modern, smart and yet relaxed style which sets the tone for the evening. We were greeted at the bar by Paolo and the team, and decided to enjoy a drink while we looked over the menu and decided what to order. Tonight, this was a particularly difficult task as there were so many options that sounded tasty, so we took a little while and I ended up having to ask Paolo to select a main course for me as I couldn’t make my mind up.

After we had chosen we were shown to our table. It was Friday evening and the restaurant was buzzing, with a lovely atmosphere. Freshly baked garlic and tomato pizza bread and marinated olives arrived shortly to whet our appetite and went down a treat. We had a range of starters between us, mussels, escargots, calamari and parma ham with melon. All were presented beautifully and tasted delicious; I even succumbed to peer pressure and tried my first snail, which I am pleased to report was actually quite nice and not at all slimey like I had imagined. Onto the main event, lobster taglione, filleto alla Diana, lobster thermidor and medaglioni di filleto. The filleto alla Diana was what Paulo had chosen for me and was a real treat, cooked perfectly and the accompanying vegetables were in season and tasty. I was assured the medallions and both lobster dishes were divine and the state of the plates when we were done definitely confirmed this. There is a nice selection of homemade sweets on offer at Portofino and we opted for the tiramisu and chocolate fondant. They

36

www.edgemagazine.org

finished off the meal perfectly, not too heavy but enough sweetness to end on a high note. The food at Portofino is very tasty, fresh and also reasonably priced. The wine list on offer complements the menu perfectly and Paolo is happy to recommend a wine (or two) that will work perfectly with your menu options. Portofino offers a set lunch menu for only ÂŁ11.95 for two courses and also a set early menu for those wishing to dine before 7pm. Sunday lunch is available with an Italian twist, obviously, and the Ă la carte menu is available in the evenings combined with a regularly changing specials menu. The weather may not always be quite as good as the Italian Riviera, but the food served here in Worcestershire could definitely give it a run for its money. 6 Worcester Road, Droitwich Spa Worcestershire WR9 8AB Tel: 01905 794 799 www.portofinodroitwich.co.uk

THE CHEQUERS INN, FLADBURY

Head chef Stuart Pretty spills the beans on his inspiration

T

he Chequers Inn, Fladbury, is bringing fresh country pub food to locals and foodies from afar. Stuart Pretty and Terri Lane run this country pub with plenty of experience in kitchens and pubs up and down the country but now, settled in Worcestershire, the pair has made the Chequers in Fladbury a favourite for modern English pub food with a focus on seafood. We caught up with proprietor and head chef Stuart to find out what’s happening this season.

Has food always been important to you? I was always curious. Most of my family members work in construction so food was always about fuel in my house. I always had good, hearty meals at home. Now I enjoy everything from tins of beans through to the best Cornish brill and turbot. I worked in my local pub cleaning fires from the age of 14 and that’s when the idea of working in a kitchen became a reality. I worked my way up, from prepping to cooking as so many chefs do. I eventually landed a position at a popular Worcester eatery with 2 rosettes to its name.

What inspires you to try something new in the kitchen? I think being on holiday always

inspires me. It’s probably because you get a bit of perspective when you’re away, you’re relaxed and you’re trying new things every day. It gets you thinking about different ingredients and the way other restaurants and specifically international restaurants do things. Walking on the beach always seems to conjure new inspiration for me.

What can our readers expect from an evening at the Chequers Inn? We like to set a standard of service and cooking we feel is missing from the area. The pub is a 14th century country pub, set in the heart of the Vale with great views over Bredon Hill. You will be served fresh English pub grub with a big fish influence. We don’t do microwave meals, only good food, using fresh, quality ingredients. Give it a go.

Why is using local produce important to you? British vegetables are some of the best and during the summer months we source everything from a local grower, not forgetting the famous Vale asparagus during its short season. From field to plate is what we really try to achieve where possible. If we can cut the middle man out, we do. Edge Magazine October 2014

39

Are there any chefs who have inspired you over the years? Stephen Terry is a constant source of inspiration for me. He is the owner and was the head chef at the Hardwick in Abergavenny, Wales and I would say that his pub is a daily reminder of where I want to take the Chequers Inn. My love of fish and cooking with fish comes from Rick Stein, of course and I also admire Nathan Outlaw.

Well, when I’m in Wales, it’s the Hardwick but more locally, I really like the Horse and Groom, Bourton on the Water.

Simplicity, clarity and service.

We want to continue to evolve the pub and the letting room side of things by maintaining what we already have and building on it with new concepts. The letting rooms are in constant use and always being updated where possible. The big plan for next year is to fully refurbish the garden ready for the summer.

What have you got coming up this season?

Where do you like to eat out?

What are the most important things you look for in a restaurant?

What are your plans for the Chequers?

Monday night is steak night: 2 steaks, all the trimmings and bottle of wine £25.00. Thursdays are homemade pie and a pint night just £10.00 each and we’re also taking bookings for Christmas parties. Hotel roof goes green with social enterprise partnership

Everything that’s cooking in the four counties

Hotel La Tour has announced an exciting partnership with visionary social enterprise Edible Eastside. Guests are to be treated to freshly grown produce including seasonal fruit and vegetables in the Hotel’s restaurant. Edible Eastside, based in Digbeth, has established a growing commitment to supplying businesses and educational institutions a space in the centre of the city to master the art of horticulture. The partnership with LaTour will see the social enterprise further their links with the city centre and help aid in the promotion of sourcing independently grown produce. Jayne Bradley, Garden Director said: “We want food growing in the city to be an everyday thing, not a one off project. Hotel LaTour are pioneers of urban food growing and are demonstrating that sourcing locally is the best for the city and for their guests.” www.edibleeastside.net www.hotel-latour.co.uk

Food from around the world in Worcestershire CaféPod’s blackberry rum liqueur and espresso tiramisu recipe Serves 6-8 Ingredients 4 egg yolks 135g caster sugar 200g mascarpone 250g blackberries 100ml water 15ml rum 1 cup CaféPod Sumatra Lake Tawar 1 packet sponge fingers Method For the blackberry rum liqueur, blend the blackberries and water.

Filter through a sieve to remove all pips. Pour the juice into a saucepan with 75g sugar and simmer until the sugar has fully dissolved. Allow the mixture to cool and then mix with the rum. Beat the egg yolks with the rest of the sugar. Place your bowl over a pot of simmering water (bain-marie like), stirring until the mixture changes texture. This should take 3-4 minutes.

Take the bowl off the heat and add the mascarpone, whipping until smooth. Cool in the fridge for at least an hour. For the base, mix 15cl of the blackberry rum liqueur with the CaféPod coffee. Dip the sponge fingers into the liqueur and coffee mix. Assemble the tiramisu by layering the saturated sponge fingers with the mascarpone cream. OSTLERS NO.1 Back to top quality with a vengance Lucie Abu-Zalaf

L

ocated a few minutes walk from Worcester city centre, Ostlers at number 1 is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle for a lunch time treat. Offering an innovative menu of fresh fish, locally sourced meat and tapas Ostlers is back with a bang. Chef Rico has designed a menu to suit all tastes and time frames and they even offer the service of calling ahead and pre-ordering for anyone who has a limited amount of time! New manager and owner, Ben Nelsey, took back the keys to Ostlers in August and after a complete facelift is looking to take this little restaurant back to its glory days. It is almost like coming home for Ben, who used to manage the restaurant a decade ago, at the height of its popularity. From what we've experienced, this little gem is definitely on its way back to the top. The lunch time menu is tasty and vibrant, with a good range of options, for a lighter lunch, the tapas menu is excellent and reasonably priced. They also run a full lunch time menu and specials board for those looking for a more traditional lunch time treat. Check out their Facebook page for lunch time offers and menu.

44

www.edgemagazine.org

The tapas menu is also served in the evenings, along with an extensive à la carte menu and specials that change daily. I can highly recommend the tapas and steak deal for two offered on a Monday evening, after we had been so impressed with our lunch time treat, we returned to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we weren’t disappointed. There is an extensive and reasonably priced wine list available, serving a good variety by the glass as well as by the bottle. The house prosecco is of particular note, for a little celebration or 'just because', a fine bottle and priced just right. The only thing that we haven't yet been back to sample is the Sunday brunch, but I don't think that we'll be waiting too long before that happens! Whether dining out for a special occasion or grabbing a bite to eat mid shopping spree, take the time to try out Ostlers. A warm welcome and some good food await! 1 Severn terrace Worcester WR1 3EH 01905 612300 www.ostlersatnumber1.co.ik

Tinseltown comes to Redditch At the Hub, Kingfisher Shopping Centre

T

his November, American diner Tinseltown will open at Redditch’s Kingfisher Shopping Centre. The Hub’s latest eatery will be serving burgers, hot dogs and sides, in true American style.

Built on the site of the old TG Hughes store, the Hub is part of the vision to put Kingfisher on the map as a leading shopping and entertainment destination in the West Midlands. Great food from well-known restaurants, the latest films and a state-of-the art gym are all at the Hub and give shoppers the perfect way to get much more out of a visit to Kingfisher. The Tinseltown diner and milkshake bar will have 150 seats with VIP areas for private parties too. A company spokesman said, ‘We have spent a considerable amount of time in Redditch and around the Kingfisher Centre gathering statistics and we are really impressed with the scheme and town centre. We are excited to be serving the people of Redditch.’ The Hub is already enjoying a lively atmosphere with many shoppers staying on into the evening to eat at one of the restaurants or making a trip for a dinner and a movie night. The choice of food is great with Nando’s and the Real China also offering delicious menus of tantalising Portuguese chicken and the ultimate oriental experience. Now, the Tinseltown diner will be chicken zilla, lamb chops, New York Buffalo wings and steaks flamed on the grill to the Kingfisher’s customers. With traditional burgers, wraps and Statesstyle sides also on the menu, this is the place for anyone who loves diner culture. You can eat in or takeaway too. Sweet treats include waffles, shakes, cheesecake and sundaes and Tinseltown has special VIP areas for birthday parties and family gatherings. Andrew Haughey, the Kingfisher Centre’s retail asset manager said the arrival is ‘fantastic news’. He continued, ‘We are constantly seeking to improve the retail experience for our customers and we’re looking forward to announcing more exciting lettings in the future as the Hub continues to be a huge draw for our customers.’

STIRRUPS RESTAURANT A REVIEW

A

t Stirrups restaurant, Cutnall Green, the aim is simple; to create delicious, wholesome food with seasonal ingredients and local

produce.

You could describe the dĂŠcor at Stirrups as equestrian luxe with exquisite leather booths and velvet drapes. Proprietors Chris and Jo Massey are racehorse owners and their style makes for a decadent setting with chandeliers and gilt frames. The bar is the perfect predinner meeting place with cocktails, real ales and champagne. Of course, the food is the main attraction at Stirrups, with a mouth-watering selection of dishes created by head chef Tom Court. All made with locally sourced, fresh produce, there is a mix of lunchtime bites, afternoon tea treats and sumptuous evening meals.

Steve Picker We started with the piri piri king prawns with sweet shallots and tomato salsa along with a special of crab, served in its shell with homemade mayonnaise. Both starters were beautiful in their simplicity. With good seafood, you can add something spicy and exciting or let the flavours of the sea stand alone. It was great to experience it both ways. The main courses range from lighter salad options and plenty of fish options to grilled steaks and sharing boards. If you’re in the mood for something a little heartier, you could try the Enville beer battered fish and chips with homemade fat chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce. The fish was cooked to perfection, with crisp, fluffy batter and perfect chips. We also had the cannon of Worcestershire lamb, confit breast, sweet potato dauphinoise, roots and jus. Delicious, succulent lamb with a rich jus, this plate is a testament to fine ingredients and good cooking. The sweet potato dauphinoise were creamy, flavoursome and complemented the meat perfectly.

Dessert was an absolute treat. Tarte Tatin, crumbly pastry, soft, caramelised apples and served with vanilla ice cream, also made in the kitchen. The lemon meringue was served with seasonal fruit bringing together a sweetness and sharpness; a balance that kept this dessert light and moreish. Stirrups is already taking bookings for Christmas, where you can eat in the restaurant or hire the function room upstairs for a Christmas party with your colleagues or a big family gathering. You can book online or call the restaurant to reserve your table. Kidderminster Road Cutnall Green Droitwich Spa Worcestershire WR9 0PW 01299 851600 www.stirrupsrestaurant.co.uk

THE CRAFT OF BREWING BEER Sadler’s Brewery Lucinda Bunn

A

le aficionados and beer lovers will be impressed with Sadler’s Brewery. For one of the great independents in the area, they’re doing really well, expanding their brewery by three times to accommodate orders and getting some of their prime bottles picked up by some national supermarkets. Real ale has won over a new generation. The UK’s national drink is so popular in fact that many fans are hoping to learn more about the brewing process. So Sadler’s Brewery has set up their open days on Saturdays so visitors can observe all the inner workings of a big brewery and taste the final product. You can spend the day perfecting your very own pint with the professionals. Beginning with an introduction to the brewing techniques and ending with a tasting session, the Brew a Beer Days at Sadler’s make a fantastic day out. The famous Sadler’s Ales Brewery Tour is also an option for a more informal experience. Start with a few samples in the award-winning tap house at Sadler’s before heading to the brewery. Munch on malt, sniff the hops and end your day with delicious locally made snacks and some of Sadler’s finest; just perfect for a private party or a Christmas celebration with your colleagues. Sadler’s is a family owned and run business with fourth generation Managing Director, Chris Sadler, heading up the team. ‘Our craft beer is something we are really proud of and now our bottles are being featuring on the supermarket shelves which is great for us, but good for locally brewed beer everywhere. The revival of real ale has encouraged younger and older beer lovers to support their local breweries’, says Chris.

48

www.edgemagazine.org

Sadler’s hopes to please all with their range of ales and bottled beers. The complexities of real ale are on par with red and white wine so there’s plenty of scope to create different character. Take for instance, Sadler’s JPA, that’s Jack’s Pale Ale to you and me. It’s pale as the name suggests, hoppy, crisp and zesty, whereas, the Worcester Sorcerer is sweet, full-bodied and moreish. Chris continues, ‘It’s really a fascinating process and one that I think visitors will get a lot out of. There’s a lot that goes into making craft beer and here at Sadler’s we’re hoping to encourage regular beer and ale drinkers to try something new. It’s all about experiencing the taste, the smell, and the colour of each beer and developing your sensory experience’. If you’d like to find out more about the tours at Sadler’s brewery, or to find out more about food pairings and what beer to drink with what, head over to the Sadler’s website. 7 Stourbridge Road Lye Stourbridge West Midlands DY9 7DG

A GLASS ACT Win your own Liscio glasses Laura Clay

S

ome wine accessories are more useful than others. These days you barely even need a corkscrew in the house to be able to enjoy a glass of wine, let alone a wine thermometer, an aerator or a decanter. However, I think, for most of us, most of the time, a glass is required. I understand that a glass for wine doesn’t have to be a wine glass - any glass, mug or plastic cup will do but the right receptacle definitely improves the wine-drinking experience. And believe it or not, it can also enhance the wine’s aromas and flavours. Thank the lord, gone are the days of the Paris goblet, hateful half-moon shaped vessels popular in the 1970s, fit only for serving prawn-cocktails in, and not great even for that. Cut-crystal glasses are beautiful to hold and behold but less good for sipping your finest wines from as they tend to be wide and heavy at the rim, and afterwards need to be washed by hand. Riedel make wonderful un-cut crystal glasses of various shapes and sizes, their premise being that different wines need different shaped glasses to get the most from the flavours and nuances, and, sure enough, they’re right. But who can afford, or indeed have cupboard space for, each glass for Chardonnay or Sauvignon, Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. There is only one shape and size of the Liscio wine glass and it comes individually

boxed making it a truly personal indulgence. It is a thing of beauty, the pleasure of wine-drinking becomes a truly hedonistic experience. It’s also fully fit for purpose for any wine; white or red, light or full-bodied, dry or sweet, Matthew Hudson, whose baby the Liscio glass is, is a key member of the Plumpton College staff, and has spent 10 years of his life researching and designing the perfect glass. In my view he has succeeded – in a taste test the wine›s aroma seems very pure and the taste intensified as well as just, well, more pleasurable. The Liscío glass is crystal and hand-blown by one of 8 expert glassblowers in Slovakia. You can find all the dimension detail and techie stuff on the website (www.liscioglassware.com) but what you won’t be able to glean until you actually hold one in your hand is the weight of the glass - talk about the unbearable lightness of being!and the sensual pleasure it delivers, there is something beautifully seductive about drinking from it. And despite it seeming so delicate it is, I’m told, pretty robust. For the not so faint-hearted, there is the tippy test (tip it over to see that it won’t break). I haven’t tried it, I am prepared to take their word for it. It’s also dishwasher proof. The Liscio glass comes at a price - £35 each (though there’s a discount for BYWine members) so this is a bit of luxury. But you and your wine deserve it. Treat yourself. Or enter the competition to win one.

A place to rest your head Create a boutique bedroom David Hatton

L

ots of us will be feeling well rested at this time of year after a well earned summer break. With luxurious linens and an abundance of conveniences, a boutique hotel stay is always a treat even if you haven’t travelled too far from home (we’re huge fans of Barnsley House in the Cotswolds and Babington House in Somerset for country house chic or further afield to The Chedi, Muscat for contemporary minimalism). So how can we create that hotel feeling at home? It’s easy with a little ‘boutique bedroom’ overhaul to create your very own sanctuary. Many people make the mistake of thinking that the bedroom is less important than a living space in the home. Ironically, stimulating your senses is possibly more important in the bedroom than any other room in the house and certainly if we’re working on entire projects we always tackle the bedrooms first. Now personally the biggest indulgence for me is an oversized bed draped in crisp white, marshmallow type linens. Look for high thread counts from brands such as Lexington for that Hamptons feel or one of our favourites, Libeco Home, a Belgian Company who has produced the finest linens for over 150 years - the most amazing night’s sleep guaranteed! Accessorise then with trays. Hotels use this method to make the numerous room essentials look organised, and at home it’s a simple way to provide a little chic glamour. They’re great for arranging jewellery and watches or styling with some luxurious perfume bottles, photographs and flowers on a vanity. To really impress in guest rooms, a tray placed on the bed with some welcoming lifestyle magazines and bottled water should do the trick. Ensure you have sufficient storage. Mess and clutter are not peaceful so design the room so that everything has its place. Boutique hotel spaces are purposely designed to ensure that every indulgence is at your fingertips. It’s always good to start with side tables and statement lamps,

52

www.edgemagazine.org

mirrored either side. If you are planning the room from scratch consider multiple power points either side and electrics to allow you to work all of the lights in the room from the bedside and lighting should be subtle, with dimmer switches, to create a harmonious feel. Most hotel rooms need to fulfil your bedroom and living room requirements, so feature a seating area. It’s a luxurious and well thought out element at home too, great for getting ready in the morning or just to read a few pages in a book before bed - if there’s a room, a pair of chairs is even better. Finally, if you’re fortunate enough to have a bathroom attached, make the whole space connect with the décor and fill with fluffy white towels and luxury toiletries - you’ll never want to go on holiday again. ESCAPE THE CHAINS Gilly Page Jewellery ‘Each Piece Tells a Story’ Lucinda Bunn

www.edgemagazine.org

J

eweller Gilly Page designs and makes bespoke, handmade, unique fine silver jewellery from her workshop in Kinver. Each design brings together Gilly’s bohemian jewellery style and her individual client’s personal story. Gilly’s pieces are well-known for capturing fingerprint impressions and hand-scribed personal messages or initials. Gilly’s clients come to her wanting totally personal and unique pieces with inscriptions, initials, fingerprints or a combination of all three. Gilly prides herself on the personal service that she offers and ensures each client is involved in every step of the process from design to completion, making it a truly personal experience. "That is why I go out to meet my clients and we design and create the pieces together there and then so I can check that they’re just right as my client envisages.’ Gilly’s style is simple, bohemian and rustic but it has a fine charm to it that only comes from the delicate care she takes in every piece she creates. When the fingerprints and inscriptions have been made in the clay, the first stage of the process that is completed at the client meeting, it is fired in the workshop before it’s filed, smoothed and polished to reveal its bohemian fine silver beauty. Each element of Gilly's pieces are handmade including silver links, catches and earwires to create unique keepsake chokers, pendants,

bracelets, bangles, dog tags, friendship bracelets and keyrings. 'I have even been commissioned to make a silver plectrum to celebrate a musician’s birthday and a personalised friendship bracelet for a new daddy as a first gift from his daughter" says Gilly. ‘It’s really important for me to create versatile pieces’, adds Gilly, ‘for me, because my pieces are created as keepsakes the recipient usually wears the piece all the time.’ With this in mind all of Gilly's pieces are reversible with inscriptions on both sides offering versatility to the wearer. Similarly, necklaces can be wrapped around the wrist as a wrap around bracelet and pendant hung on leather cord that can be worn either short or left long creating personal, unique and versatile pieces. What’s fantastic about these pieces is that each one tells a story and can, on request, incorporate different charms and elements of previously loved items. Gilly says, ‘One of my clients wanted the buttons from her Grandmother’s vintage coat to be included in her necklace. A truly personal and unique piece.’ Because Gilly's pieces are keepsakes they are suitable for both men and women, younger or older. 'Past commissions have included 18th, 50th, 65th and 80th birthday keepsakes, Mother's and Father's day gifts and christening and wedding keepsakes' says Gilly.

Gilly is a trained jeweller and studied Designer Crafts, Jewellery and Silversmithing at Epsom School of Art and Design. You can find her work via her online Etsy shop Gilly Page Jewellery, Facebook Gilly Page Jewellery or by contacting her directly. Each piece you see is uniquely handcrafted which makes her bespoke keepsake jewellery the perfect gift for special occasions. Recently, Gilly has added a bespoke bridal keepsake collection to her portfolio of pieces including floral bridal crowns with personalised silver charms, buttonholes and thank you gifts. From enquiry to completion, Gilly works with you to bring together your sentiments with a design that works with your style. If you want to give a special gift to a loved one this Christmas; someone who’s made you proud, someone who deserves a thank you, or just to let someone know that they are loved this is the jewellery that really says something. A keepsake to cherish, hold dear and wear with love. www.etsy.com/shop/GillyPageJewellery Find Gilly Page Jewellery on Facebook gilly.page@yahoo.co.uk 07702 831512

nteriors to inspire, hand-crafted heritage and home décor ideas you’ll keep clicking back to. That’s the Nadine Rose Interior Design aesthetic; your online guide to otherworldly textiles, fabrics and ceramics.

Founder and owner Nadine Rose’s passion for the Islamic world stems from her childhood growing up in Tehran. Living opposite the Grand Bazaar, its sights, its smells and its sounds had a deep, lasting impact. Nadine has since travelled the world seeking out decorative and unique embroideries and fabrics from countries such as Guatemala, Indonesia, Oman and Afghanistan. With each ikat cushion and every decorative ceramic, Nadine’s choices tell a story. She’s pieced together her online shop, choosing products for their colour, pattern and the quality of craftsmanship. But Nadine’s shop is just as much about the suppliers as it is about the products. Nadine has a close relationship with suppliers all over the world and this allows her to get the best for her customers; that’s why so many of her textiles are exclusive to Nadine Rose Interior Design. Sustainability is vital and protecting traditional arts and crafts has never been more important in a world of mass production and cheap imitation. Working with designers and makers all over the world who are preserving traditional creative talents is part of the ethos of Nadine’s company. The shop provides economic opportunities and access to the Western market for many suppliers. Nadine also donates 10% of her profits to educating and training young women in developing countries. Having supported girls in poor parts of the world and having worked with a number of charities throughout her life, Nadine hopes to grow her business in order to offer more opportunities to women abroad. Enter Nadine’s online space and lust over hand-loomed organic cotton towels, antique velvet cushions and Himalayan shawls. Bright Bulbs At Wagon House Gardens Karl Strawbridge

A

utumn, is it the end of the horticultural year or the beginning? True, all the herbaceous planting is dying down and all the golden leaves are falling to the ground. Mist and fog add to the season making it feel damp and terminal, like it’s the end. Actually, it could also be said that the autumn is the beginning of the gardening year, all those decaying leaves, with the nutrients stored within, feeding the soil with the goodness it needs to regenerate and start afresh. October, as well as being the perfect time to plant trees, shrubs and to divide herbaceous plants, is also the time to plant spring flowering bulbs. The soil is still warm after the summer so young roots soon form and plants quickly get established before the winter.

Wagon House Gardens at the Jinney Ring Craft Centre has a good selection of spring flowering bulbs. Tete-a-tete daffodils are perfect for early spring colour. Plant twice the depth of the bulb either in pots or into the border, left alone they will naturalise and form clumps. Rockery tulips are also a delight for an early spring display with their short flower stems, crocus are another that will naturalise and multiply if left undisturbed. Equally sprinkle a few into your hanging baskets or patio pots for that extra spring sparkle. A particular clever way of planting in containers is to plant in tiers or layers with the later taller tulips at the bottom then a layer of compost perhaps some narcissi Topolino in the middle followed by some more compost then a layer of Shakespeare rockery tulips. Finish off

with a layer of Ruby Giant crocus. You will then get a succession of flowers that will last from January through to May, all from one pot. Bulbs in pots have the added advantage that they can be moved around to where colour is needed. Your garden will never be dull with these spring beauties around. Start your bulb planting now and perhaps you will decide, like me, that the autumn truly is the start of the horticultural year with a fantastic spring display of flowering bulbs to look forward to. “ Tomorrow I will be amazing.”

October open days at Dodderhill School

D

odderhill School in Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire, is hosting two open days in October, where parents and prospective students will be able to see and experience all its facilities first-hand.

At Dodderhill School in Droitwich, we believe that children can achieve anything, just as long as they have the support, nurturing and individual attention that every one of them deserves. That is perhaps why this is such a happy and friendly place for girls aged 0-16, and why our 2014 GCSE results have ranked Dodderhill as the best performing girls’ school in Worcestershire*. Proof that small schools can deliver big results.

What could your child achieve tomorrow? Visit www.dodderhill.co.uk or call 01905 778290.

The events, on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th October, will also demonstrate the advantages of single sex education and small class sizes. Cate Mawston, headmistress of Dodderhill School, said: “Parents and pupils often tell us that one of the key factors for them choosing Dodderhill is the small class sizes right through the school. It means teachers are able to dedicate more time to each pupil, both academically and pastorally, ensuring that each girl gets the individual attention necessary, to help nurture her to be the best that she can be. “Last month, 100% of Year 11 pupils secured five or more GCSEs, while an impressive 82% of grades were A*, A, or B. Additionally, over the past two years, more than a third of girls achieved nine or more GCSEs at A* or A grade. This is a sure sign of the benefits of small class sizes. “What I would say to parents is this, while your daughter may be doing well in a large co-ed class of 20 pupils or more, imagine what she could achieve in a smaller class without the distraction of boys.” The open days will also allow parents to see how the school operates and take a behind-the-scenes tour, allowing them to meet and talk to teachers, as well as learn about the curriculum and facilities available, which include a new performing arts centre, a sports hall, two tennis courts and even a maze. Dodderhill School provides a safe and happy educational environment for children aged three to seven, and girls aged eight to 16. Visits at other times are welcome and can be arranged by calling 01905 778290. Dodderhill School also offers scholarships and bursaries. Bromsgrove – a happy, successful school

B

romsgrove School’s results are impressive, but Bromsgrove is much more than a place to get good grades. It prides itself on being a happy school where children of all ages can thrive both academically and outside of the classroom. A recent parental survey supported this with over 97% saying their child was happy or very happy at school. The opportunity to develop and excel in non-academic areas is of huge importance and a massive range of sports and activities are on offer every day and at the weekend. Catering for 1600 pupils aged 3 -18 on three sites (although the Prep and Senior Schools are adjacent to each other) gives the school a unique position within the town of Bromsgrove.  The Preparatory School is the place where children are encouraged to learn autonomously, the academic syllabus is rigorous and individual performance is monitored closely. The extra-curricular programme is extensive and the sports fixtures list proves that Bromsgrove Prep is one of the most successful schools of its type in terms

of both performance and participation. The expectation is that everyone will give of their best and at Bromsgrove Prep, busy, happy pupils take all this in their stride.  We are always happy to welcome prospective families to have a look around – whether to an open morning or for an individual visit – please just contact the admissions team to organise a visit.

Cherishing the children The Midlands Children of Courage Awards, 7th November 2014 at Villa Park

T

Hebe Hatton

he Midlands Children of Courage Awards is a brand new charity event coming to the West Midlands this November. Born from its hugely successful Yorkshire counterpart, which was launched in 2011 and has been raising over £50k per annual event, the MCCA hopes to do as well. For the first event, the charity is pleased to announce that X Factor finalists Kingsland Road will be performing. The boys have agreed to be the ‘voice’ of the event and will open proceedings with a couple of numbers from their repertoire. They will also present an Award to one of winners. The awards are dedicated to honouring deserving young people in the Midlands region, whilst at the same time raising funds for the St James’ Place Foundation. The foundation is perfectly suited to receive the money raised by the evening as the foundation’s main focus is providing grants for UK charities that are committed to helping children and young people. The foundation has distributed over £34 million to good causes which help support economically disadvantaged or socially marginalised children, and provide them with a better life. St James’ Place also provides grants for charities that help children suffering from mental conditions and long-term illnesses, supplying them with the funds to buy specific equipment and employ specialist staff. All the funds raised at the event will be matched pound for pound by the foundation and will be distributed to charities that make a positive and lasting difference to young people’s lives. The event is set to be a celebration of the brave and outstanding children of the region, recognising their wonderful and inspiring achievements and exceptional behaviour, often in the face of adversity. The stars of the evening will without a doubt be the children, who have made extraordinary achievements in categories selected for the event such as Outstanding Bravery, Young Carer and Fundraising. With the age ranges of the children nominated spanning from as young

68

www.edgemagazine.org

as under one to eighteen the evening promises to show how unbelievably courageous the children of the West Midlands can be. As well as being an amazing way to increase the awareness of the achievements of the younger generation and raise money for charity, the evening will also be a high profile event in itself, with a host of local celebrities and a fabulous three course meal set in the grounds of Villa Park. The ceremony will be presented by BBC Breakfast presenter Steph McGovern who has been involved with the event for the last two years in Yorkshire and is passionate about the cause. Looking forward to being part of the evening she said ‘Being part of the Children of Courage Awards is a massive honour for me. All of the children nominated for the awards are exceptional young people and it’s great to reward their hard work and bravery.’ Of course no charitable evening would be possible without the support of the local businesses and organisations as sponsors and there has been a great response to the event so far. However, there are still some sponsorship packages available from as little as £500 which gives excellent exposure and a chance to contribute to the charity. As this is a brand new event in the Midlands region that organises are also reaching also reaching out to businesses, organisations, philanthropists and celebrities in order to ensure that the MCCA Awards Dinner is a huge success. Can you play a part? Individual tickets for the dinner are just £65 each and a table for ten is only £600, call Jane Clynes Events on 07703271238 to secure your place. Further details on how you can get involved in the MCCA are event available on the website www.midlandschildren.co.uk and you can follow the event on Twitter @ MidsChildren or on Facebook at www. facebook.com/pages/Midlands-Childrenof-Courage

THE FUN RIDE

The campaign to protect rural England Nicholas Butler

T

he Campaign to Protect Rural England is the war to protect rural England. Successive governments have thrown the planning system into chaos and we have to rely, locally and nationally, on policies so deliberately vague that unless strong action is taken the entire countryside will be ruined by piecemeal development. Planning applications to put housing estates, small and large, where they will effectively destroy the characters of our towns and villages, abound. The worst must be rejected, the better sited where they can do the least damage. We have no quarrel, in principle, with wind turbines, but it would be wrong to put four of them, each taller than St. Paul’s Cathedral, on Feldon Vale below the Burton Dassett Hills, and eight on the classically beautiful countryside at Wormleighton. Solar panels are a good source of energy, but they must be sited atop buildings such as factories and offices, not in the open countryside. We have just fought a mammoth public inquiry about a proposal to put a storage depot, technology park, hotel and three car showrooms on 740 acres of green belt land to the north and south of Coventry Airport. None of these buildings are needed, but they would make it easier to expand the airport, which is the real objective. That, too, is quite unnecessary. To complete the picture, HS2 is waiting to charge through Warwickshire without stopping, wreaking a broad band of havoc through farms, villages, ancient woodlands and our lovely chequerboard of arable and pasture. We, the Warwickshire CPRE, are fighting, and will fight, all these battles as hard as we can. However, now and then we lay down our weapons and go out to enjoy the countryside and remind ourselves just how beautiful it is. A short while ago we held one of popular Fun Rides. A course of eight miles, from Ditchford Farm near Shipston-on-Stour to Todenham and back, with thirty optional jumps, attracted a record field of 150 riders. Some walked, some trotted, some galloped and everyone had a good time, except one unfortunate lady who fell off her horse and had to be airlifted to hospital. Happily, she was soon discharged. So much for fun; now back to the fray, the hard, endless work of ensuring that those who come after us find the countryside no less beautiful than it is now. www.cpre.org.uk

ISA FREEDOMS Welcome to a NISA ISA Tom Ware

T

he New ISA, or NISA, is now in place. For our clients the switch to the new ISAs will be automatic, so they can take advantage of the new freedoms immediately. It is worth reminding ourselves of what investors can do within their NISA. The changes have come about both in the structure of ISAs and in the investment options available within an ISA. Structurally, the NISA has a more generous limit, with investors now able to shelter £15,000 tax free every year. This makes them a more potent force in all types of financial planning. For example, if an individual invests £1250 into an ISA every month (£15,000 for a full year) for 20 years, compounding at 5% (including charges) they could expect to generate a pot of around £514,000. The NISA also gets rid of the historic distinction between cash, and stocks and shares ISAs. Investors can now hold their full ISA allowance in cash, and transfer previous years’ ISA savings freely between cash, and stocks and shares. While we would not generally recommend holding all an investor’s ISA allowance in cash, given the interest rates available at

the moment, the flexibility can be useful. It allows investors to move between cash and shares at different points in the market cycle, or to suit their own needs. It also means that investors can hold and put money into the stock market gradually, rather than committing the full ISA allowance at the start of every tax year. There have been concerns that those cash ISAs run by banks and building societies will not be equipped to handle stocks and shares. However, at Churchill, we use a number of investment platforms, all of which can provide investors will the full investment flexibility under the new regime. There have also been changes to the investment options for ISAs. Last year, Aim shares were introduced as an option within ISAs. This opened up some tax planning options around inheritance tax. Shares in certain AIM companies will qualify for full relief from inheritance tax once they’ve been held for two years as long as they are still held when the saver dies. This is a high risk option, but can be useful in certain circumstances. Peer to peer lending is now an investment option within ISAs. This aims to direct money to small and medium sized companies, who may have struggled to raise financing from banks. As yet, the structure

of these schemes is unclear and few are ready for market, but it is an investment option to look out for in the future. The Government has also said it is considering allowing retail bonds with a maturity term of less than five years to be held in ISAs. These operate in the same way as conventional corporate bonds, paying a coupon for the life of the bond and then giving investors their money back at the end, but are directed at a retail audience. There is a secondary market for these on the London Stock Exchange. A number of major companies have issued this type of bond including GlaxoSmithKline and Rolls Royce. For income seekers, these can be an option. Ultimately, these new investment freedoms may not be for everyone, but it makes ISAs a more flexible and powerful tool for financial planning. In particular, all clients should consider using the higher allowances where possible. IMPORTANT NOTICE The descriptions of products and services in this newsletter are not recommendations, which we will only make to individuals based on their personal circumstances and needs. Investment plans and funds may involve risks to both capital and income. Past performance is not a guide to the future and the value of investment can fall as well as rise. You might not get back the full amount invested particularly if an encashment is made in the early years. The descriptions of tax rules are based on Churchill Investments’ understanding of law and HMR&C practice. Tax rules are subject to change. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. Churchill Investments plc is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

THE DAUGHTER OF TIME: A REVIEW A novel by Josephine Tey Mike Stafford

T

he victims have been dead for five hundred years, as has the accused; the investigating officer never once leaves his bed during the case; there is no forensic evidence, and the only witness reports come in the form of history textbooks. Hardly sounds like the best mystery novel of all time, does it? And yet, that’s precisely what The Daughter of Time is, at least according to the Crime Writers’ Association’s 1990 poll. In Josephine Tey’s brief novel, first published in 1951, Inspector Alan Grant of the Yard is convalescing in hospital after sustaining an injury in a previous case. To help him avoid boredom during his long recovery, one of his nurses brings Grant a series of photos, one of which depicts King Richard III. Usually able to draw accurate conclusions about character through faces alone, Grant is dismayed to hear that the kindly, tortured face before him is that of a king viewed by history as a twisted tyrant, a man for centuries understood to have murdered his young nephews, ‘The Princes in the Tower.’ What follows is less of a crime story than it is a skewering of historians’ myth-making. The narrative arc, as much as there is one, involves Grant progressing from elementary history books and on up to more dense, allegedly better considered tomes. At the start of the “case,” he discusses Richard III with his nurses, and sees what he is up against. On the basis of no firm evidence, his nurses claim Richard to have been a villain, a murderer, or evil incarnate. For Tey, mis-remembered half-truth and

72

www.edgemagazine.org

hearsay is what passes for historical knowledge for many of us; King Alfred burnt the cakes, for example. It’s a story not anchored to other facts or details, and may indeed never have happened at all. So can we really be so certain of Richard III’s guilt? As Grant delves deeper, he encounters more insidious failings in the recording of history. The “sainted” Thomas More, praised for centuries as the greatest authority on the reign of Richard, was but seven years old when Richard died. Moreover, as a member of the Tudor court, one could be forgiven for believing - as Grant does - that More’s impartiality is doubtful. In terms of characterisation, there is little. Grant and his historian friend Carradine are not examined, and even though the deeds and motivations of King Richard are interrogated at length, this is only secondary to Tey’s main concern. History itself is on trial here; its accuracy, its partisanship, its tone deafness to human emotion, its comfort with repeating the falsehoods of past generations of scholars. So does this mother of all cold cases make for a good read? Unquestionably, yes. To understand history is to understand ourselves, and it’s critical that we understand it properly, with all its imperfections, biases and myths. To anyone untrained in the historian’s art, ‘The Daughter of Time’ should be a revelation. www.nudgemenow.com/contributor/ mike-stafford

xploding shells and flares casting a sickly light over trenches, searchlight beams dissecting dark skies, and soldiers – monumental, motionless and steel-jawed as they aim their machineguns; dynamic, almost abstract mass as they march to the front; or as the war dead, their bodies sprawled on muddy, shell-pocked ground, ringed with jagged barbed wire...

The artist CRW Nevinson is predominantly known for his dramatic and haunting images of World War One. Characteristic for him are these harrowing scenes from its battlefields. However, the often unpalatable effects war had on society at home were also a major theme for this fascinating painter and printmaker, whose wide-ranging, critical

gaze also alighted on the war effort in British industry and on the effect war had on the role of men – and women – including those whom he regarded as profiting from the war effort. Even after peace was declared in 1918, war remained a preoccupation for Nevinson. Disturbing depictions of conflict recurred in his work throughout the 1920s and ‘30s, and indeed right up to his death shortly after the end of the second world war. Nevinson’s powerful art and contradictory personality are explored in Rebel Visions: The War Art of CRW Nevinson, the highlight of this season’s exhibitions programme at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham. This major exhibition – which marks the centenary of World War One – is the first to focus in depth upon the longevity of the theme of war in Nevinson’s works. Always a rebel and never satisfied with conformity, Nevinson produced work that ranged from official war propaganda to antiwar condemnation; some of which was not only censored in its time, but still remains unsettling today.

of his responses to conflict. It will feature paintings, drawings and prints from national public collections, including Tate, the Imperial War Museum, the British Museum and the Russell Coates Art Gallery, as well as works from private collections rarely seen in public. The Shoemaker’s Holiday at the RSC This winter the Royal Shakespeare Company presents the hilarious Jacobean comedy The Shoemaker’s Holiday by Thomas Dekker: a glorious city comedy of class, conflict and cobblers in love. Rowland Lacy loves Rose Oatley but it’s not going to work out. An aristocrat and a middle class girl aren’t supposed to marry, not least because Rowland is a very bad boy and her parents really don’t approve. When his father sends him to war to reform his ways, Rowland must take drastic action to avoid any chance of unnecessary personal injury and secretly pursue his love… The Shoemaker’s Holiday runs from 11 December 2014 to 7 March 2015 in Stratford-upon-Avon. To book tickets visit www.rsc.org.uk/shoemaker or call 0844 800 1110.

Friday nights are when the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra gets to enjoy a different kind of classic! Songs from the shows, big-band swing, symphonic rock and those classical tunes you’ve heard on the TV but can’t quite place – they’re all here, served up with style in the fabulous acoustic of Symphony Hall, Birmingham. This year we salute the songs of the ‘60s and the West End’s greatest hits. Coming up in 2015, the legend of Ella Fitzgerald – and Queen.
