ow, October is here already. This year just seems to be flying past in a blur; not helped by the fact that my mind tends to work a month ahead in magazine articles rather than what month we are actually in. I’m not sure why it surprises me that it’s nearly October as I am writing this though, the summer weather has well and truly cleared off and taken the hopes of an Indian summer with it, it would seem. Time to embrace the change of seasons and start putting plans into place for all of the fun things that we have to look forward to, pumpkin carving for Halloween, Bonfire night and even Christmas... Too early? Maybe a little, but for those of us who like to be organised and start getting excited early it’s around the time where we start to make plans. This month, as it is Halloween, we take a look into where our traditions came from and let you know where you can pick your own pumpkin in your area, but it’s not all ghosts and ghouls. We headed over to The Dial House Hotel at Bourtonon-the-Water for a gorgeous dinner and hotel stay, Portofino in Droitwich to check out their delicious Italian cuisine and over to The Windsor Castle Inn, near Stourbridge for dinner and to sample the ales from Saddler’s Brewery, keep your eyes peeled for a great competition offered by them in this month’s edition. We’ve also got a great competition from the Royal Shakespeare Company to win tickets to their production of Hecuba and dinner for two at their Rooftop
Restaurant. I tried out some of the many treatments that will be on offer at Santai by EF Medispa in preparation for when it opens its doors and took the Seat Leon Cupra ST for a spin, practicality teamed with a 276bhp engine and the fastest estate car to have ever graced the Nurburgring. We also have our usual mix of interviews, impartial and informative tips and tricks from our contributors; how to cosy up your home for winter with Hatton and Harding, Men’s health with Mel Taffs, a great book recommendation to check out as the nights draw in from Mike Stafford, fashion tips for A/W 15 from Emma Jenkins and financial pointers on cyber security from Tom Ware and much more. I would also like to wish Megan and husband Nick all the best with the new arrival, we can’t wait to meet him or her and thank you for all of your hard work! All in all, a very busy month here again at Edge Magazine. From me and all of the team, thank you so much for reading, we hope that you enjoy it and look forward to seeing you next month.

Autumn Style
Embrace those warmer, richer fabrics this autumn
S
o, it’s starting to get dark by 7.30pm and I’ve already started putting the heating on so I think it’s safe to say that the summer is over. Of course, you will get the usual predictions of an ‘Indian Summer’ from some ill-informed individual but I’m pretty confident when I say that it’s time to put away those lighter fabrics and start wearing something more substantial. Actually, I always enjoy this transition to the autumn season and it’s great to get back into the wools and tweeds that are the mainstay of the autumn wardrobe. So what’s going to be big this season in the world of men’s tailoring? Loose-fitting is definitely a trend we will be seeing this autumn. Loose fitting designs in overcoats and trousers were seen on the catwalks earlier this year and we will start to see this permeating through men’s tailoring over the coming months. Overcoats tailored from wool in loose fitting designs will be popular and for colours, blues, blacks and greys will be prominent but for those wanting to embrace a bit of autumn colour, reds and browns will also be a popular choice. When it comes to trousers, then relaxed and wide-legged will be the order of the day. Looser cuts and higher waists (not as high as Simon Cowell)!
Adrian Barrows 16
www.edgemagazine.org
will be on-trend. The classic meets contemporary look is always popular and looser cut trousers with doublebreasted suit jackets and crew neck jumpers will be a stylish look this autumn. As far as suits are concerned then its greys and checked tailoring that will be in vogue. Layering different shades of grey in ties, waistcoats, scarves, sweaters and overcoats is a good look and you can never go wrong with classic Prince of Wales checks. As far as Halloween is concerned, then I need to remind you that I’m a British tailor! The main event in autumn is bonfire night and Guy Fawkes…. You can forget this ghosts and ghouls nonsense. November 5th seems to get forgotten as we embrace all things American and I think that’s a sad thing. At least you can layer up and look smart at an evening of fireworks and it beats wearing some hideous mask and annoying the neighbours with trick or treat. But enough of my grouching. Autumn is a beautiful season for changing colour and a great time for embracing those warmer, richer fabrics. And if I hear anybody call it ‘the fall’ you can expect to incur my wrath! Stepping out in style
VIP experience day at Kingfisher Shopping Centre
A
s the cold nights begin to draw in, we’re starting to embrace the texture, suede, fringing and check that the Autumn/Winter season brings. To help see in the new season in style and to celebrate the improvements that have been made to the Centre over the past 12 months, Kingfisher Shopping Centre invited some local heroes into the Centre for a VIP fashion experience. Shoppers were invited to nominate the person they felt deserved a special treat and the chosen nominees were then invited into the Centre for a day of relaxation, pampering, styling and first class VIP treatment. Sarah Davies (35), Mary Stanley (64), Kirsty Hooper (20), Kerry Yeomans (30) and Joanna Andrews (29) were all nominated by friends and family for their own unique reasons. On Monday 21st September the VIP group indulged in a spot of retail therapy visiting
18
www.edgemagazine.org
Marks & Spencer, Primark, BANK, Riley Boutique and Lady Muck Vintage where they were dressed head to toe in the hottest Autumn/Winter trends. They were then treated to a hairstyling session courtesy of Toni & Guy before receiving the full makeover treatment from The Body Shop. TV stylist and model Jill Pollitt was on hand to chat to the VIPs about their day-to-day style, favourite fashion trends and what they could expect from their very special VIP day. Jill then picked out two outfits for each of them which they modelled in the newly revamped Evesham Walk. Sarah wore a navy fringed jacket (£32), white blouse (£32), ripped jeans (£38) and cream heels (£30) from BANK. She then wrapped up in BANK’s monochrome check coat (£60), black top (£28), ridged skirt (£22) and tasselled boots (£25).
Mary wore a cream blouse (£25), jeans (£39.50), red and purple floral kimono (£55) and sandals (£29.50) from Marks & Spencer. Her second outfit was all about the bold statement patterns of this Autumn/Winter. Mary wore Marks & Spencer’s black and white woollen jacket (£89) teamed with a simple burgundy jumper (£29.50) and tassled duffle bag (£35) also from Marks & Spencer. Kirsty wore a floaty cream blouse with black waistcoat attached (£12) and black maxi skirt (£10) from Primark. She then got all wrapped up for Winter in this season’s favourite comeback, the fringed cape (£14) which was teamed with Primark’s burgundy jumper (£10), harem jogger (£8) and black pumps (£4). Kerry wore the simple yet smart suit jacket (£35) suit skirt (£20), white blouse (£22), shoe boots (£25) and black tote bag (£25) from BHS. Kerry’s second look was all about texture, with luxurious leather and that cosy favourite fur taking centre stage with Lady Muck Vintage’s fur coat (£56) and leather skirt (£25). Joanna wore a floaty khaki blouse (£30), black wrap cardigan (£30), and black trousers (£18) from Evans in BHS. She then wore a long lined burgundy top (£49.99), wine, turquoise and purple knitted waistcoat (69.99), and silver heart pendant (£20) from Riley Boutique. Later in the day, the group were treated to a spot of afternoon tea at the new Patisserie Valerie located in Debenhams, and were given a goody bag to take home. You too can step into the latest Autumn/ Winter trends at Kingfisher Shopping Centre in Redditch. With 140 stores, including Debenhams, New Look, Next, and Primark, it's the perfect place to indulge in the latest Autumn/Winter styles. And, after a hard day's shopping you can rest up at The Hub, the centre's food & leisure area - grab a bite to eat at Nando's, or catch the latest film at the Vue cinema.

I
n the fashion world, summer is officially over. This is hard to get our heads around when we keep getting glimpses of fine weather and our summer has been a washout. But, you'll find the high street has swept away their summer stock and made way for rich textures, luxe fabrics and long sleeves. A/W 2015 is here and this season is already getting me excited! There are some great trends being diluted for the high street. Autumn Snuggle At Hatton and Harding Interiors
S
David Hatton
o Autumn is well and truly here.... (it felt like it arrived in August!!) and with the chilly weather that wants us to leave the outdoors and curl up inside. Besides thinking about Halloween costumes, warm, comfort foods and hot chocolate (with marshmallows), one of the best things about Autumn is that we get to add all of those opulent, cosy touches to our homes. We like our own home to feel different with the seasons. Bright, airy and light in Spring and Summer and in Autumn and Winter we want that cosy, warm and comfortable feel. With just a few simple touches to each room you'll immediately feel ready for crunchy leaves and jumper weather. Cable knit throws and cushions are an ideal companion on the sofa for chilly nights at home with a movie plus they immediately add seasonal texture. Paired with a warm blanket, cushions become snuggle buddies! A roaring fire is the obvious way to warm up your living room but if you don't need or can't have the fire going you can still create a cosy ambience. Fill your fireplace with a mass of pillar candles or votives, you'll still create a warm tranquil look and be able to gaze at the flames in the evening. A fireplace stacked with logs will also create that Autumnal style and hurricane lanterns can still give you that flickering subdued light. Fabrics are definitely the key to creating a cosy feel in your home so look for sumptuous throws, blankets and cushions to layer generously on your bed. Natural fibres like wool and cotton work best and swap your lightweight summer bedding for warmer options, they're heavier and cosier. Faux fur layered with natural linens and warm wools will make your bed wonderfully cocooning.
22
www.edgemagazine.org
Try adding rugs if you have stone or hardwood flooring and opt for curtains instead of blinds. We love using heavy lined velvet or linen drapes which look luxurious and help reduce heat loss too. People tend to try and fight the darkness of our colder months but deeper paint colours can actually make a room feel cosier. Elegant Tyrian Rose from Fired Earth or Velvet Blue from Zoffany are great examples. Bringing the outdoors in is great at any time of the year and Autumn is no exception. Treat yourself to fresh Autumn flowers or invest in some good silk ones. Chrysanthemums or sunflowers with berries are ideal for Autumn whilst albino pumpkins and potted heathers also look great dotted around. Lighting is always important but vital to keep your home looking cosy and inviting on dark days and cold nights. Task and function lighting obviously need to be considered although it's more mood lighting that is the key to creating a serene atmosphere. Think of layering your lighting to adapt to the natural tones through Autumn and Winter. Subtle lighting within shelving, table and standard lamps will all work beautifully and where possible use dimmer switches. So, when the nights draw in, treat yourself to a few cosy home comforts... and that large mug of hot chocolate!! Brighten up your home for autumn
W
Colours of Morocco
riting this in early September, the evenings are already drawing in and becoming distinctly chilly. As winter takes hold, and the light changes, it’s a good idea to think about bringing colour, light and warmth into our homes. If you buy one thing this season, I would definitely recommend that it be a rug! Rugs add texture, warmth and interest as well as colour. Vintage Moroccan Berber rugs are as popular as ever, and it’s easy to see why. Hand woven, for the most part, by women in the Atlas Mountains, each rug is completely unique and woven using design elements from their own personal experience. A Boucherouite (rag rug) is a perfect addition to a minimalistic interior. Moderately priced, they are woven using vibrant colours and different textures, with the added bonus of being washable! Guaranteed to lift a space on a dreary winter’s day. If you’re looking for the comfort of a wool rug, perhaps in front of a sofa, go for an Azilal or Beni Ouarain rug. These are 100% wool rugs, with neutral backgrounds, Azilal rugs often highlighted with pops of bright colour.
26
www.edgemagazine.org
Adding bright cushions is another great way to bring some seasonal colour into a room. Vintage Berber tent cushions work well with both traditional and contemporary interiors, or choose a graphic Berber cushion appliqued with vintage textiles. Last, but most definitely not least, think about lighting. Lighting that creates a soft ambience is what you should be aiming for on a cold winter’s evening. Go for Moroccan lanterns suspended from the ceiling, or decorative wall lights, casting intricate shadows on the surrounding walls and surface. Light candles inside table lanterns to create the same effect. Guaranteed to instantly make you feel warmer, without turning up the heating! The Dial House Quintessential English charm Megan Ace
A
s a privately owned business, The Dial House demonstrates the best blend of traditional and modern to bring you the ultimate country hotel experience whilst being located in one of Britain’s prettiest villages, Bourton-on-the-Water. Nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds, The Dial House extends a warm welcome to you. The perfect place for a weekend or a longer break, The Dial House has earned an enviable reputation as a base to explore the local area from. The hotel is situated in idyllic surroundings and is built from the famous mellow Cotswold Stone. The Dial House dates back to 1698 and is one of the oldest buildings still standing in the village. My husband and I arrived on a very wet Tuesday afternoon, most appropriate weather for me considering I’m waddling like a well-fed duck at 38 weeks’ pregnant. Set back from the
28
www.edgemagazine.org
unsurprisingly rather touristy High Street, you instantly feel privileged having the ability to roll up into the private car park around the back. The hotel is furnished with quintessentially English charm and the homely reception gave us the warm and snug welcome we were hoping for. We were politely greeted by Sandra, who talked us through our stay, confirmed our dinner reservation, ordered us the morning papers and showed us to our room. We have arrived. I instantly want to lie in the glorious, yet unpretentious fourposter bed and sleep until the morning, but my husband votes to go for a walk and see what Bourton-on-the-Water has to offer. He wins, and I am whisked up as quickly as I lay down. A quick nose in the bathroom confirms we have a roll top bath to clamber into later, so the quicker we get out and walk, the quicker I can become acquainted with it!
The beautiful walled garden here also boasts a hot tub, which I didn’t experience on this occasion, simply due to the awkward entrance and exit required, due to my inability to do anything elegantly in my current state. However next time, we will be sure to sample a bottle of fizz, whilst soaking up the bubbles. Bourton-on-the-Water is such a delight. I have spent quite a bit of time in The Cotswolds, but never here. It’s friendly, full of character and even in the pouring rain, has chocolate-box attractiveness about it. Once back in the room, my husband runs me a bath and I almost drown it’s so gloriously deep. I’m hoping that wasn’t his intention. He relaxes (which is a very rare occurrence), ponders though the welcome pack and more-or-less memorises the evening menu. I over-hear him from my private ‘swimming pool’ in the bathroom, negotiating his choices
with himself, aware that we can’t, under any circumstances order the same. The menu sounds far too exquisite for that. Downstairs, we are shown to the lounge area, which dons a huge fireplace - I’m hearing the dulcet tones of a roaring fire as I write and can only imagine basking in the warmth it would provide during the winter months, which I’m confident would rapidly aid sleep - comfy sofas and a raft of board games. If I was in a position to have a tipple or two, this would be a dangerous lounge for my husband and me. You could easily while away your whole evening in here ordering cocktails, clarets and fizz. We give our order to one of the most delightful waitresses I’ve ever come across and we are both excited for what’s to come. The first surprise was a couple of canapés each; Chicken Liver Parfait in a choux bun pastry, topped with salted
caramel, and a Poached Oyster served on a silver spoon with pressed cucumber and squid ink sponge. The chicken liver was a sweet/ savory joy, as smooth as silk with the salted caramel adding a crunch to cut through the texture and the poached oyster was one of those ‘the best things come in small packages’ pleasure. Needless to say they disappeared down the hatch quickly, verging on rude. The second surprise was a Jerusalem Veloutee drizzled with hazelnut oil served with oven-warmed, home made artisan breads, so fluffy; I wanted to climb inside one. Deliciously crammed with flavor, I could have easily asked for it as a main course.
served with tomato fondue, parsley oil & Mallard consommé. The apple jelly cannelloni cushioned the precious and sublime white crab meat inside, almost protecting it from the outside elements. Adding to the variety of textures was minute bits of crisp apple, which certainly made the dish one of those ones where you have to have a taste of each ingredient on the plate on one forkful, to realise its full potential.
Onto what we ordered:
The ravioli was equally exquisite. The thinnest of pastas encased the melt-in-the-mouth meat; it was like unwrapping something from a loved one. The consommé it was paddling in was transparent, packed a huge punch and was seasoned to perfection.
For starters, I went for the Portland white crab meat cannelloni rolled in apple jelly and brown crab emulsion served with apple textures & sorrel and my husband, the Mallard duck and ham hock ravioli
The main event for me, was to be poached & roast fillet of beef, slow braised short rib, glazed shallot, shallot puree potato gratin and beef sauce and for my husband, Lightly roast fillet of October 2015
29
pork, Alsace bacon custard, turnip puree and roast baby turnips served with a roast pork & sage sauce. I could have cut my beef with a spoon, it was so soft and the shots of braised short rib were like miniature power-houses of smoke-house flavors. The Alsace bacon custard served with the mouth wateringly juicy pork was like nothing we’ve ever tasted before. Think of the softest, smoothest smoky cheese and then inject it with the comforting smell of crispy bacon and you’re half way there. Dessert choices were the 64% Valrhona chocolate soufflé & pistachio ice cream; you guessed it, for me and for my husband, the Apple cake with maple vinegar and caramel gel. Our waitress decanted the warm, oozy, melting chocolate from the delicate serving vessel into my soufflé and from that moment, I told my husband he wasn’t allowed to try it. Rich yet light, extravagant, lavish and utter pleasure. When my husband’s arrived, I changed my mind and allowed him a mere morsel, with the selfish intent of trying his. Just as scrumptious and light but I think mine just pipped the post! I was promised that the wine was sublime too. There is a respectable
30
www.edgemagazine.org
amount of wines by the glass on offer, all priced reasonably at around £5.95. The Malbec was evidently going down so well, I lost count after the 2nd glass was ordered. I was trying my hardest not to be impossibly jealous. We decide to retire to bed, which just a walk/ waddle up the stairs always seems luxuriously lazy, and always makes us question why we don’t do it more. By morning, and after our 8am lie in, we are refreshed and ready for breakfast. Again, the appeal of rolling down the stairs (book room 1, by the way if you’re into the convenience of this as much as we are) strikes us both immediately and we find ourselves once again, being asked what we’d like to eat. The breakfast menu is divine. Tea/ coffee, juice and a basket of toasts and croissants are served as a given. You then choose from a variety of cereals, granola or porridge and then, believe it or not, full English breakfast or Loch Fyne Smoked Salmon and scrambled eggs. We both have the granola with honey and yogurt followed by what turns out to be the most refined English breakfast we’ve ever had the pleasure in eating. We wonder how on earth we’ll get through
the impossible task of polishing it all off, but of course we manage. My husband and I have grown to absolutely adore this type of accommodation and The Dial House confirms why we do so. A charming abode with some of the finest of dining we’ve had in years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank The Dial house staff for making my last work assignment before my maternity leave, one for my husband and I to treasure for long time and to my team at Edge for delegating the task to us. It’s been a pleasure. Note that children over the age of 10 years old are welcome at The Dial House. Their sister hotel in nearby Stowon-the-wold has family rooms available - www.vines.co.uk. Five a day
More than just fruit and veg
N
estling in the centre of the beautiful Alcester High Street you will find 5-A-Day, who as the name suggests offer a fantastic range of locally and home grown fruit and vegetables. Alongside this there is a fish counter of enviable quality and selection. They offer everything from Bridlington Crab to Conger Eel and Robsons Crastor kippers with as many as 20 varieties to choose from on a Friday morning, but don’t leave it too late as its quickly becoming a local favourite as customers flock to get the best fish in the area. Shop owner Blu tells us “When we opened we focused on the fruit and veg but soon realised there was a need for fresh fish and there was not a fresh fish monger within about 15 miles of Alcester, what started as a small offering has become an integral part of the business and something we take great pride in” Indeed they should, with them being able to name which boat the majority of the catch was caught from, they take provenance seriously. So take a trip to 5 - A - Day or catch up with them at the Alcester Food Festival where there stall will be serving mussels with a local cider sauce. 14 High Street, Alcester Warwickshire B49 4AD. M & M Meats
Traditional butchering by family run company
M
& M Meats Limited is a family run business established in 1984. They moved to their Worcester City Centre premises 8 years ago, located near to The Cross and have gone from strength to strength with their best trading year ever, last year. They specialise in quality meat and produce, the majority of which are sourced locally and everything is cut and prepared on the premises. Matthew Nelmes, the owner of the business, personally visits the Birmingham Wholesale Market to buy fresh fish and hand-selects other meat products to sell within the shop, where offers vary on a weekly basis. Last year, the Nelmes family bought some local beef cattle to rear at their farm at the foot of the Malvern Hills. The animals flourished, grazing on lush pasture and enjoyed a relaxed environment before being prepared for the Christmas season. The difference in the quality of the end product was truly noticeable, due to this the family have decided to increase the number of cattle they are rearing this year to be able to offer more beef cuts to those looking for an alternative or additional roast for their Christmas table. M & M Meats Christmas orders book opens ready for this year on 1st October and orders will be taken on a strictly first come, first served basis. For more information simply, call into the shop on St Swithin’s Street and speak to either Matthew or Mark. To take the guess work out of what to order for a traditional Christmas lunch, the team of 5 qualified butchers offer a choice of 3 options for the meat hampers, including a new ‘Deluxe’ range for this year. M & M Meats have established an excellent reputation for quality and price and have built up a good catering trade within the city’s restaurants and eateries, including The Olive Branch, Edwards Bar & Bistro, Bindles and Bushwackers. You don’t have to be in the catering business for us to deliver an order; we will happily deliver any order over the value of £50 to an address locally. Halloween
It will be all fright on the night Alice Salter alloween, or All Hallows Eve, will be celebrated on October 31st with carved pumpkins, colourful costumes and copious amounts of sweets. However, no one really knows where it came from. Many believe that this celebration began with a Pagan Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. The name often attributed to this celebration was ‘Samhain’ (pronounced Sah-ween) and roughly translates as ‘summer’s end’ in Old Irish.
H
Traditionally this was believed to be the time of year when spirits of the dead were closest to the living as they made their way to the otherworld. The idea of wandering spirits is responsible for many traditions we still see today. Trick or treating originated as part of the Celtic festival when children began to dress as the spirits thought to be roaming their world, performing verses or songs in exchange for food. People would even wear masks to hide from malicious spirits seeking revenge! In place of our bright pumpkins, Celtic people in Ireland and Scotland carved grotesque faces into more easily available turnips. The faces were meant to represent evil spirits or goblins and were placed in windowsills and on doorsteps, much like today, to ward off ghosts and malicious spirits. While we may no longer believe that ghosts wander the streets on October 31st, traditions like trick or treating and carving pumpkin lanterns have become central to Halloween as a celebration of all things spooky. This year why not steer away from the supermarket and have a go at picking your own pumpkin. As many local farms are now offering the opportunity to pick your own, it is increasingly easy to create something a little more unique this Halloween. With different varieties and sizes available, you could use small pumpkins for a table display, pick a big ‘Jack O’Lantern’ variety to be easily carved or venture for something different with a white or yellow variety squash. PYO pumpkins available throughout October from; Stanleys Farm, is located in Harvington, Kidderminster, and opens from 9am-5pm on Tuesday to Saturday and 10am-1pm on Sundays. Bells Farm Shop, is located on the Worcester Road, Hartlebury, and is open 9am-5pm, 7 days a week. Pumpkins R Us at Wasperton Farm, Barford near Warwick, is open 8am6pm, 7 days a week until Halloween, has its own gift shop and even sells pre-carved pumpkins New House Farm Pumpkins, located in Hill Wootton near Warwick, is open 8am-6pm, 7 days a week until Halloween, has its own gift shop and also sells pre-carved pumpkins Essington Fruit Farm, located on Bognop Road, Essington, Wolverhampton, is open 9am-5pm Tuesday to Saturday and from 10am5pm Sundays.

Five shades of gold set to be next blockbuster
Award winning Coventry restaurant launches new tasting menu paired with five individual wine choices
L
ager has long been billed as the perfect pairing to a spicy paneer or a mouth-watering masala.
However, an award-winning Indian restaurant in Coventry has become one of the first in the Midlands to opt for a fruitier alternative. Turmeric Gold, which is based at newly-refurbished premises in the city’s medieval Spon Street, has unveiled a menu which courageously couples some top tipples with a selection of their most delightful dishes.
This bold move by the restaurant’s proprietor and chef Jay Alam was made in a bid to take the restaurant to the next level as well as to dispel the myth that wines and Indian/spicy food doesn’t mix. Jay said: “Many people are unaware of the many beautiful wines currently available which really complement the spices and flavours of Indian food. I think that a lot of people are unsure of what to order – should they have a glass of Chenin Blanc or a Zinfandel with their dinner?
“This new menu takes all of the guess The new menu, Five Shades of Gold, work out of it as I have paired each pairs a selection of fine wines with a five- dish with the perfect wine, based on the course taster menu – guaranteed to tempt flavours of both the food and the drink, even the most discerning diners at the so that they complement each other city’s exclusive and highly popular Indian perfectly.” restaurant. 38

The new taster menu starts with a Paneer Til Tila - an Indian cheese dish wrapped in batter with mustard seed and deep fried – which has been paired with the refreshing citrus fruit flavours of a Chenin Blanc or a mildly sweet Alsace Gewürztraminer. This is followed by its famous Fish Amritsar – marinated in lime, with chilli batter and dip fried – which has been matched to the smoky aromas of a Chablis Les Moineaux or a very clean La Pintora Sauvignon Blanc to embellish this delicate fish course. For the main dishes, the menu has matched the full flavours of a Jacobs Creek Shiraz/Cabernet and the savoury notes of a Marisco Pinot Noir to its spicy Citrus Lamb dish followed by a Jacobs Creek Chardonnay or a Chablis Les Moineaux for its Chicken Silchar.
And for those with a sweet-tooth, Turmeric Gold has even found the right glass of vino to wash down its Exotic Gold Medley comprising of sliced hot gulab jaman, pineapple fritter – which is served with a cool vanilla ice cream. The fresh delicate green fruits of the Lodez Sauvignon Blanc is an ideal match with the sweetness of the food or diners can try the strawberry fruit flavours of a Sycamore Lane Zinfandel Rose. The new menu comes just six months after Turmeric Gold underwent a major transformation to create a truly unique dining experience. The new-look restaurant includes a wealth of Indian artefacts to provide an air of authenticity. Slightly more lavish are the quintessential Maharaja Quarters which provide a perfect ethnic ambience for people looking for the ultimate dining experience. In addition to the new Five Shades of Gold taster menu, Turmeric also provides a more extensive choice with some more traditional favourites each bearing an individual twist and beautifully presented. As well as providing a standard of cuisine which is second to none, the presentation of its dishes has become a hallmark of the Spon Street restaurant. October 2015

How to pair curry and wine By Classic Drinks When it comes to pairing the perfect tipple with a mouth-watering masala or a spicy samosa, many people automatically default to lager as an accompanying drink – but actually curry and wine can be a much better match.
Jay added: “Turmeric Gold has become one of the most outstanding Indian restaurants in the Coventry and Warwickshire area. I believe it is a jewel in Coventry’s crown. With the latest refurbishment coupled with our new menu and now our wine pairing, we are aiming to build on those foundations to take Turmeric Gold to the next level.” Descending from a family in catering, Jay had his first taste of the industry in early childhood. The experience aroused his passion for creating delicious, healthy meals and from his early teens he began to carve out what promised to be a successful career. “Whilst I was at school I embarked upon a number of work experience placements in top restaurants,” added Jay. “I gained valuable experience and the confidence to pursue my ambition of owning my own exclusive restaurant. “I have continued to invest in Turmeric Gold and as a result the restaurant today represents a delicate blend of the quintessential medieval character of the picture-postcard Spon Street and some of India’s most luxurious palaces.
“I am also incredibly proud of the quality of my food as it matches the unique ambience. All of my recipes, from the starters to the desserts, are my own personal creations. As an avid health enthusiast, my dishes are healthy as well as delicious. I am also passionate about presentation which, coupled with the cuisine and surroundings, is key to creating that true dining experience.” Since opening, Jay’s Coventry restaurant has also won a string of illustrious awards. These include the Best Restaurant at the Godiva Awards in Coventry and Warwickshire, Best Ethnic Experience at Coventry and Warwickshire Food and Drink Awards, Best Restaurant in Coventry and Warwickshire in the Coventry Telegraph Awards, Finalist in the Coventry and Warwickshire Tourism and Culture Awards, as well as receiving recognition in the Best in Britain and British Curry Awards. However, according to experts choosing the right bottle of plonk is not always a straightforward process as spices can confuse the palate. It’s also worth noting that there is no single grape or variety that can match the spectrum of flavours found in a curry. Therefore, choosing the correct wine can be slightly daunting - but extremely rewarding when you get it right. White wines in general have an aromatic fruit sweetness to them and a minerality that can work extremely well. However, you should avoid serving white wine too cold as the flavours will open up and express themselves more after a few minutes left relaxing in the glass. Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Gewurtztraminer and Riesling all go perfectly with the sweet spiciness in chutneys and they have enough acidity to cut through sauces for fish and chicken curries. Off dry Rose goes particularly well with curry but if you are looking for a glass of red you should opt for a bottle which is softer in style without being too dry. You should also avoid red wines with overpowering bold tannins to avoid competing with the strong flavours in the food. A nice bottle of Shiraz or Merlot pair very well with lamb dishes. So while chilled lager has traditionally been the obvious choice to counter the spicy heat in a curry, many diners are now discovering that the complex match of luscious, viscous fruit and the acidity offered by wine creates a much better match.

Beating the Winter Blues
I
t is thought that the ‘Winter Blues’ also known as ‘Seasonal Affective Disorder’ is thought to affect over 2 million people in the UK alone, but it is suspected many more of us suffer from some form of change in mood during the winter time. It can affect people of any age, even children but there are a few tips and tricks to help keep you cheery as the days become shorter and the weather turns a bit colder. Firstly, keep active and get outside. Easier said than done in the winter, but pull that coat on and try and get out for at least an hour a day. Studies have found that going for an hour’s walk in the middle of the day can be as effective as light therapy at kicking those winter blues into touch. If you can’t manage an hour, just get yourself outside as often as you can, especially on brighter days. If you can’t get outside, bring the outside in... Choose light and pale colours for your home that reflect the natural light from outside and try and sit by windows as often as you can. You could also get yourself a light box, costing around £100; these lights mimic sunlight, giving out light that is 10 times brighter than your average home and office lighting and you should aim to sit in front of it for at least two hours a day. Make sure you keep warm too; being cold can make you feel more down. It has been found that keeping warm can reduce the winter blues by half! Try and keep your home between 18 and 21˚c and top up with warm meals, hot drinks and wear warm clothes and shoes. A healthy diet is important throughout the year, but in winter it is especially important. Eating properly will boost your mood, give you more energy and stop you piling on those winter pounds. Try and balance those cravings for carbs and comfort food with a good amount of fruit and veg. It won’t only be your waistline that will thank you come spring time! Taking up a new hobby shouldn’t only be reserved for New Year’s Day and going into winter is the perfect time to do it, whether it’s joining the gym, starting to write a blog or keeping a journal, making sure that you have something to focus on and look forward to will help to keep those spirits high. And if all else fails, make sure you keep up to date with friends and family. Everyone loves a good old chin wag and when those summer afternoons and evenings ebb away and the nights draw in, make sure you still make time to catch up with those that you care about. Accept all of those invitations, even if you just go for a little while. Socialising is great for your mental health.

Maintaining a healthy balance Health tips for men Mel Taffs
I
t's a fact that our health and our ability to stay strong and live longer is not just a matter of genes or just luck. Men, just like most women are taking charge of their health and below are a few tips on maintaining it. Eat Healthy. Nutritious foods give you energy and may lower the risk of certain diseases. Focus on fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low fat or fat free milk products. Stay at a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese can raise your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Find out your body mass index to see if you’re at risk. Eat healthy foods, control portion sizes and be active to keep your weight in check. Keep moving. Regular exercise is one of the most important things you can do for your health so try to do something each day, even a 30 minute stroll can help. Go smoke free. Smoking is linked to many of the leading causes of death, including cancer, lung disease and stroke. If you smoke, quit today! Routine exams and screenings. Ask your doctor how often you need to be examined and ask about screenings for certain diseases including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, sexually transmitted infections and certain types of cancer. Avoid heavy drinking. Heavy drinking can lead to many problems, including high blood pressure, various cancers, psychological problems and accidents. For men 65 and younger drinking in moderation means no more than two drinks per day. Men older than 65 should have no more than one drink a day. Manage stress. Balancing work and family obligations can be challenging, but it's important to protect your mental and physical health.
44
www.edgemagazine.org
Get enough sleep. Not getting enough sleep can affect your mood and your health. Sleep apnoea, a common problem in which your breathing stops briefly and can increase your risk of accidents and certain health problems. Stay safe. Safety means wearing seat belts and helmets etc but it also means using condoms, washing hands regularly, taking care of your teeth and wearing sunscreen. Men are different to women in all kinds of ways, including their nutritional needs, just as women need particular nutrients during pregnancy or protection from breast cancer, men need nutrients that can help them maintain muscle mass, prevent prostate cancer and more. Here are just a few foods that should be in your daily diet. Oysters- Could there be something in it that oysters are the food of love...well it's true that just a few oysters a day will deliver a full days supply of the antioxidant mineral zinc. This is involved in hundreds of the body processes, from producing DNA to repairing cells. Bananas- These are a great portable source of quick energy and are rich in potassium, which is needed to regulate nerves, heartbeat and blood pressure. They are also a super rich source of vitamin B6 that can aid your immune system and aid protein metabolism. Fatty fish- No list of super foods would be complete without the healthy fat omega 3 fatty acids. These polyunsaturated fats are the preferred form of fats in your diet for many reasons. They can benefit the heart, circulation and immune system and reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Choose from salmon, sardines, tuna, mackerel and herrings. Broccoli- While virtually all vegetables deserve a place on the superfood list, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli are helpful in the prevention of heart disease and cancer. It's loaded with vitamin C, beta-carotene, potassium and phytochemical called sulphoraphane which has anti cancer properties to prevent prostate and colon problems. Who needs to have the influenza vaccine? Should you be having it? Dr Louise R Newson
E
very autumn, the influenza vaccine (or “flu jab”) is delivered in huge quantities to GP surgeries and chemists throughout the country. I have already had many patients coming to see me asking if they can have the influenza vaccine this year even though they are not eligible for it under the NHS. More worryingly, each year many people who really would benefit from receiving the influenza vaccine do not have it, sometimes this is because they do not actually want it but other times it is because they do not realise they need to have it. The flu jab does not prevent all types of flu. It protects against one strain of the influenza virus that is most likely to cause flu that year. It also does not prevent you getting other viruses, which can cause flu-like symptoms or colds. Flu symptoms are generally similar to those of a cold. However, they are usually much more severe. If you have flu then you are likely to have very high fevers, feel extremely tired and ache all over. Flu symptoms can last for up to a week. Paracetamol or ibuprofen can help to reduce your fever and also improve your symptoms. It is important to drink plenty, as it is common to become mildly dehydrated through sweating with the fever. Hot drinks can be very soothing. If you are otherwise fit and healthy then flu is not a serious illness and you will recover from it after a few days without any specific treatment. However, in some people flu can develop into more serious conditions, such as pneumonia and bronchitis. Complications are more common in older people, people with other medical conditions such as diabetes or asthma, pregnant women and those people with a weakened immune system.
46
www.edgemagazine.org
People who are at an increased risk of complications from flu are recommended to have the flu jab every year. Everyone over the age of 65 years of age should have a flu jab. If you are pregnant you should also have a flu jab. This vaccine is very safe to be given during pregnancy. All children aged between two and four years and also those in school years one and two should receive the flu jab this year. If you have certain medical conditions such as heart or lung disease then you will also need to have the flu jab. See www.nhs.uk/Conditions/ vaccinations/Pages/flu-influenzavaccine.aspx for more details regarding who is eligible for the flu vaccine this year. There are two types of influenza vaccines – the injection and the nasal spray. Most people receive the injection but the nasal spray is usually given to children. Both types of vaccine are very safe and effective. The injection vaccine does not contain any living viruses so it cannot actually cause flu. As the flu jab only protects again one particular virus, each year the flu jab is slightly different. So it is really important that you have the flu jab every year in order to stay protected.

Portofino Droitwich A taste of Italy in the heart of Worcestershire
W
alking through the doors of Portofino in Droitwich you are instantly reminded why Italian restaurants remain one of the most popular destinations for dining out in the UK. The sleek contemporary interior matched with the gentle buzz and chatter of a restaurant full of diners clinking glasses and moving plates made for a truly continental feeling. Paolo the owner greeted us with huge enthusiasm and my feeling tonight’s meal would be a special one was confirmed when enjoying a delightfully non complicated glass of Vino Della Casa in the comfortable bar area. We were then lead to a spacious table to peruse the a la carte menu. The daily specials were read out to us and I followed Paolo’s recommendation of a simple dish of prawns and smoked salmon, classic and refined, like any good Italian should be. My partner chose a scallop dish served with a light garlic
48
www.edgemagazine.org
Steve Picker mash, finely diced tomato and fresh chilli. The flavours in the dish were precise and well thought out leaving a pleasing taste dancing on the palette. For mains I treated myself to the fillet stroganoff, a great quality piece of beef served in an indulgent peppered cream sauce. The other dish for the table was a very generous frutti de mare risotto with an abundance of prawns, squid and cockles jostling for position in a visually striking dish. A side dish of green beans and carrots cooked in fennel and orange was a winner and the roast potatoes served with my beef were the best I’d tasted in a while. With round 2 done we needed a break to contemplate dessert and though the menu was full of Italian classics we settled on ice cream, one hazelnut and one amaretto, and I’m pleased to say the gelato was perfecto!
Throughout the evening the service was perfect, non obtrusive but attentive and it was great to see Paolo taking a hands on approach to service and making sure all his guests received the best experience. So how was the experience, well if you are looking for a perfectly cooked Italian meal, made from the best ingredients and served by a friendly and professional team then look no further, Portofino ticks all the boxes.

The Windsor Castle Inn Quality food in a homely environment Steve Picker
A
modern British pub is a hard thing to master, having to meet the demands of a modern diner whilst not straying too far from the essence of what a good pub should be, a convivial place to sup beer and while the evening away. However following my experience this evening I have to say that the Windsor Castle has hit the nail on the head. Upon entry the warm rustic pine tables and chairs filling quirky alcoves gave the impression of a well loved home used by romantic diners and larger groups alike. This is Sadler's Brewery's pride and joy and it shows with an exceptional line up of their beautifully crafted Black Country beers and after we had been greeted by Steve we took a seat and I ordered a pint of Mellow Yellow which as the name suggests was a lovely light brew that whetted my appetite.
52

As we looked at the menu it became apparent that they took a great approach using their beers as ingredients within the dishes as well as providing food and beer pairings, a great move forward to
remind people that it's not just wine that can compliment food! To the food itself, I'm a bit of a traditionalist and the cured salmon in stout was right up my street, served with sourdough the stout marinade added depth of flavour that worked fantastically with the squeeze of lemon I judiciously applied. My partner had the shredded duck salad with hoisin, a modern day classic that I can be a little dubious of as it seemed to me a good way of palming off poor quality duck but evidently not here. The duck was crisp yet succulent, a sign that it was indeed good confit duck and the surrounding salad elegant with the spring onion and cucumber working well to refresh and revitalise the palette. Moving to mains and with my eye caught by the Sea Bass with tiger prawns in a lemon cream sauce, I still had half a pint of my pale ale left and it was

suggested it would go well with fish. I can only say I am thankful for the recommendation as it was great. As I mentioned in the introduction I think the modern British pub was epitomised in that moment, Sea Bass and beer and it worked. Though of only passing interest, due to my whole hearted attention being taken by my own main course, I noted my partners Sadler's fritters were the pub’s take on fritto mizzo, scallops ,prawns and calamari lightly battered and served with char grilled asparagus and a sweet chilli dipping sauce. A cliché perhaps but we could have eaten them again, not because of designer sized portions... because they were divine.
day would include Breakfast, lunch and plentiful beer tasting and a gift pack of beer to take home. We call it our ‘Brew a Beer day’ the value is £198 for 2 people. To win this unique experience just send the answer to the following question in to saddlers@edgemagazine.org Where is Sadler’s Brewery based?
Coming to the end of the meal we were joined by Andre Perou, the Head Chef who was incredibly modest about his achievements but did say that cooking for Rick Stein was a highlight of his career. His passion shines through on the plate and his dedication off it, often spending his days off exploring markets to experiment with new ingredients and form new menu ideas. So how to conclude? A great looking place with great food and top quality beer. Whoever said the British pub is dead needs to tell the Windsor Castle Inn, because they weren't listening.

Best of Bordeaux
Old world meets new with the best of both on show Laura Clay ragging isn’t a very British way to behave. It’s not seemly or polite, in fact it’s often downright rude. So forgive me, but I simply have to boast about the amazing exhibitors we have secured for Love Wine, the wine festival BYWine is organising on 7th November at Hotel du Vin, Birmingham.
B
For starters we have four of the most important and interesting local wine merchants; two, Frazier’s and Nickolls & Perks, are old established family businesses with a well-deserved dedicated following and two, Loki and The Drinks Emporium, are young guns who’ve burst big time onto the Birmingham wine scene. Loki is collecting retail awards as if they are going out of fashion and The Drinks Emporium boasts (there I go again) the largest collection of champagne outside of London. At Love Wine, you will be able to taste wines from their eclectic ranges. Egdmond Wines and Hard to Find Wines, both from Shropshire, will be focussing on wines from South Africa, which, to my mind, is one of the most exciting countries wine-wise for all styles – smooth and full-bodied reds, zingy whites, rich, age worthy whites and reds, top class sparklers and heavenly sweets. Three of our exhibitors are loading up their cars and crossing the channel. You’ll be able to taste (and buy) Hotel du Vin’s own Château Bauduc from Bordeaux, a stunning Beaujolais Cru from Château Grange Cochard in Morgon and the award-winning wines from Chêne Bleu in the Ventoux region of Southern France. All were invited to exhibit because we love their wines and we know you will too. Closer to home, Kent’s Ridgeview will be exhibiting their fabulous sparkling wines giving you the opportunity to see exactly why, after twenty years, they are regarded as producing some of England’s best fizz; and Three Choirs Vineyard from Gloucestershire have a range of deliciously fruity still wines and even an English red to taste. 54
www.edgemagazine.org
Talking of fizz, there will be several Champagne producers to get you in a seasonal mood, albeit a bit early, as will, we have no doubt, the Quinta do Noval Port bar. And there’s a wine accessories stand to get some early Christmas shopping done, too. If you prefer New World wines you won’t be disappointed – Jackson estates (New Zealand), Wirra Wirra (Australia), Santa Rita (Chile) and Doña Paula (Argentina) will all be there. Wines from emerging regions will also be available to taste – Soul Tree from India and back in Europe, wines from Croatia, Slovenia and the Alps. Something for everyone. On top of all of that we can’t pretend to be blasé about having Helen McGinn (aka Knackered Mother) from ITV’s The Alan Titchmarsh Show and Joe Wadsack from BCC Food & Drink offering wine walks. We are as pleased as punch that they are going to be there – they are, without doubt, two of the nicest and most fun wine people in the business. As if having over 200 wines available to taste isn’t enough, we have free LoveIn sessions to learn a bit more; you will take away a free Riedel wine glass AND a free goody bag. All this for £20 (or less if you buy group tickets). For more information and to buy a ticket go to www.lovewinefest.co.uk Have you got yours yet?
Bordeaux is Love Wine’s headline sponsor and they are giving away two bottles of wine to one lucky winner in this month’s wine competition. Who is the Knackered Mother? Send your answer to wine@edgemagazine.org by 31st of October 2015 You must be over 18 to enter. Rubbing my tired eyes as I walked up Kensington High Street, I was looking forward to my day of pampering and was keen to see what sort of things Esther Fieldgrass and her team have in store for us once the doors open at SANTAI BY EFMEDISPA. I would be trying out a range of treatments which they will be launching at Resorts World Birmingham. Whilst SANTAI BY EFMEDISPA will offer full spa facilities where you can spend the whole day (or even weekend) being pampered and relaxing, they will also be offering a range of tried and tested non-surgical treatments to help with a vast array of skin problems or body niggles and it was these and the treatment pathways that I would be checking out. I was met by Zoe, the treatment coordinator at the Kensington Clinic who showed me into the office where your consultation begins. This is definitely where the medi part of the medispa really shows - there isn’t just your standard spa form to fill in and off you go, you are treated to a really in depth consultation where you discuss with your treatment coordinator exactly what you are looking to achieve and what the best

plan and even who the best therapist is who will get you there. Now this can be just to relax and rejuvenate, or it can also be to help correct flaws such as acne, acne scarring, redness, rosacea or sagging skin to name only a few common complaints that the EF MEDISPA therapists are trained to work with. My main concern was how much my skin has changed since having my little girl nearly two years ago and with getting older. My skin has become much more oily and I have also developed small burst capillaries on my cheeks from spending too much time in the sun and I really wanted to know if there could be anything done to remedy these two annoying problems. My therapist Joanna looked at my skin in depth and worked out which Biologique Recherche products would best help to combat my oily red skin - which was in fact occurring due to my skin being extremely dehydrated and sensitised. Makes sense considering the amount of coffee that I drink and generally rather hectic lifestyle. SANTAI EF MEDISPA are the only spa in Birmingham to carry Biologique Recherche products. This cult luxury skincare line has been developed in Paris and contains biological, marine and botanical extracts that are highly active and contain no artificial fragrances. I was given a double cleanse with Lait VIP02 Cleansing Milk – to rehydrate and calm the skin followed by a dab of Lotion
P50W to gently exfoliate the skin, and a relaxing mask of Masque Visolastine E to hydrate and soften. The treatment finished with an application of a few drops of Serum Extraits Tissulaires, a deeply hydrating and strengthening serum. The facial finished with a session under a red LED light to help calm the skin, which was also so relaxing that I nodded off. After my facial I went to try another of EF MEDISPA’s most popular treatments, Radiofrequency. Radiofrequency at EF MEDISPA is an entirely non-invasive procedure that will put all of your concerns to rest whilst still effectively targeting loose skin to help firm and lift. The secret behind Radiofrequency’s success lies in the dual technologies of Unipolar and Bipolar Radiofrequency. They work in sync together, with bipolar targeting the outer layer of skin, where the fine lines and wrinkles are found, and unipolar hitting the deeper layer to shape and firm your skin from the inside-out. It uses heat to stimulate your skin cells, promoting the production of collagen and encourages any stubborn cells to release their pockets of fat to be naturally metabolised by the body. It can be done nearly anywhere on the face or body where you have skin that has become wrinkled, thin or loose. A course of 6 treatments is recommended for maximum results and I can certainly say from my experience that it is definitely one of the nicer toning/fat removal treatments I have ever had. A pleasant
warm sensation and a good chat with my therapist and all was completed. Even after one session I can feel and see the difference, so I can imagine after a course of 6 you would be incredibly pleased. My final treat of the day was to sample ‘Drip & Chill’. The Drip & Chill Lounge is the perfect spot to head to if you have been feeling tired, run-down, or in desperate need of an instant pickme-up. I was asked to fill in an online questionnaire about my health and wellbeing, which was used to prescribe my bespoke menu of vitamins and nutrients. I was a little bit nervous about this to begin with, but I was put totally at ease. The treatment was performed in the specialist lounge, allowing me to lie back as the Vitamin Infusion gently passed directly into my bloodstream. It’s incredibly relaxing; many people drift off to sleep as soft music soothes the body and mind. The IV Vitamin Infusion was administered by a professional nurse, and there really was no need to worry; discomfort was minimal, and there was a range of herbal teas and healthy snacks to enjoy during and after my infusion. Your body does so much for you every day, and the Drip & Chill is the perfect way to give something back.
one Biologique Recherche facial has been able to make such a difference, this is one brand that I can’t wait for EF MEDISPA to bring up to us and with my fears of Drip & Chill totally dissipated, the next time I’m feeling a little wiped out or sniffly, I will be booking myself in for my IV vitamins for certain. The fabulous treatments offered by EF MEDISPA will also be complemented by a full spa experience including a 15 metre pool, outdoor hot tub, a salt cave and the VIVE juice lounge, meaning that you can make a full day of relaxing but also know that you are in safe hands with any cosmetic or body issue treatments. I hopped back onto the train home feeling restored and invigorated and after waking up and showering the next morning, my skin looked and felt amazing. I am genuinely shocked that October 2015

Holistic healing from diagnosis to recuperation
A
uraVeda, the Ayurvedic and holistic practice is based in Kinver and has been open for 5 years now. AuraVeda combines the ancient 8000 year old Indian philosophy of long life and rejuvenation with energy field work. Ayur meaning science and Veda meaning life. Central to our ethos is the notion of bringing the physical body into alignment with its auric field, (the layers of energy surrounding it). Aiming to achieve well-being through holistic care. Much of this work is based around various massage treatments and healing sessions, taking into consideration your whole self. At AuraVeda consideration is given to the five basic elements, space, air, fire, water and earth, and the three bio-physical forces, Vata, Pitta and Kapha within each person. The treatments are targeted at the root cause of any disease rather than just the symptoms and this is achieved by not only offering hands-on treatment but by looking at other aspects of your life that may influence the way you feel right now. Daily stress takes it toll on all of us and can have phenomenal repercussions on your well being. With this in mind, a comprehensive full health maintenance package using the cutting edge science of Heart Rate Variability is available.

The Inventions of Heath Robinson Saturday 26th September to Sunday 22nd November 2015
T
he MAD (Mechanical Art & Design) Museum on Henley Street, Stratford upon Avon will be showing its first major temporary exhibition with works by Heath Robinson (1872–1944). On view from 26th September '15 until 22nd November '15, this exhibition will showcase original artworks by the prolific British artist. Heath Robinson was a cartoonist and illustrator who is still to this day celebrated for his humorous drawings of over-elaborate inventions which accomplish very simple tasks. This extraordinary collection of original illustrations, posters and books, all demonstrate Heath Robinson's most celebrated work: witty, exaggerated devices.
Over his lifetime, Robinson drew thousands of pieces of art, spanning two world wars, the Victorian age of the machine and the rise of modernism. These times are all reflected in his work and "Heath-Robinson" became established in the English dictionary as a term for any over-complicated contraption. His importance as an innovator in the fields of illustration and advertising was considerable and his complicated inventions provided a source for many artists, designers and engineers around the world. The MAD Museum, 4/5 Henley Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. CV37 6PT.
These pieces have been provided by The Chris Beetles Gallery, Sheldrake Press and private collectors. The exhibition will also include a 3D augmented reality image of a well-known Heath Robinson drawing, by Turi Cacciatore.
Exhibition entry is included in the museum's standard admission fee. Supported by The Chris Beetles Gallery and Sheldrake Press.

Children of Courage Awards
The region’s courageous and inspirational young people to be honoured at Midlands Children of Courage Awards 2015
T
he prestigious St. James›s Place, Midlands Children of Courage Awards 2015 (MCCA) will be staged on 23rd October at The National Motorcycle Museum, Solihull. The second annual Awards ceremony will be aiming to raise over £60,000 to exceed last year’s total. The monies are dedicated to helping community groups and organisations in the Midlands region. Over the last 22 years the St. James’s Place Foundation has distributed in excess of £37m to good causes. At the same time some of the region’s bravest, inspirational and courageous children and young people will be recognised for their achievements – often in the face of adversity – across a number of categories including Courage, Inspiration, Fundraiser and Achievement. The Stephen Sutton Award will be presented by the late Stephen Sutton’s mum and will go to a very special individual in recognition of their outstanding achievement. This year’s ceremony promises to be an exciting and upbeat event and will be hosted by BBC Children’s TV presenters, Ricky and Leah Boleto who are co hosts of Newsround and a perfect choice for putting the winners at ease!

Entertainment will be provided by two acts that have come to prominence as a result of appearing on Britain›s Got Talent. Misstasia, the Disney singing quartet will open the evening and the very talented Ella Shaw will delight diners with her unique musical talents as a singer and pianist. Attending in her capacity of Face of Teenage Cancer Trust is Charlotte Newman who once again pledges her support to MCCA: “This will be my second time attending the Children of Courage awards and I feel truly honoured once again. I believe that the event provides a platform for the nominated children to be recognised for the great work that they do. The children are extremely inspirational and can teach us all a lesson about our attitudes towards life. They have each encountered their own battles head-on and have done so in such a courageous fashion. It was once said, that courage was not the absence of fear but the triumph over it and the children nominated are the true embodiment of that quote. They do not give up, they do not complain, instead they persevere in spite of the challenges that they face daily. They deserve to be acknowledged for all they have achieved thus far and for all they will continue to achieve in the future”.
If you would like to get involved and attend the event full details are available on the website www.midlandschildren.co.uk and you can follow on Twitter @MidsChildren or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pages/MidlandsChildren-of-Courage/

TUESDAY 13th OCTOBER brings an innovation for Festival 2015 with an early morning visit to the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam. Art on Screen brings Van Gogh’s masterpieces to
Bewdley complete with commentary from renowned curators and historians. In the afternoon, with a cry of That’s The Way To Do It, Bertie Pearce tells the story of the satirical and subversive Mr Punch from his 16th century origins in Commedia dell’arte to the modern day. This full day of events culminates with Antiques Roadshow favourites Hilary Kay and Paul Atterbury with their behind the scenes tales in their show “Have You Had It Long, Madam?” Please note regrettably items cannot be valued at this show.
WEDNESDAY 14th OCTOBER and politics and satire come into the frame again with Guardian cartoonist and satirist Martin Rowson’s Hung, Drawn and Quartered - an illustrated presentation of the art of giving offence. This is a particularly topical subject, which has led to tragic consequences of late. An Age advice of 16+ applies to this show. The evening theme is the life and times of a food and restaurant critic, with Jay Rayner, long standing reviewer for the Observer, journalist and TV and radio foodie, presenting My Dining Hell. THURSDAY 15th OCTOBER is another full day, beginning with an illustrated morning talk by Head of Landscape, Joe Hawkins on the discoveries and restorations taking place at the parkland and gardens of nearby Hagley Hall. The afternoon sees Kryten from Red Dwarf arrive in Bewdley - or rather his alter ego actor and presenter Robert Llewellyn with his questioning presentation Electric Cars Are Rubbish, Aren’t They? Having driven over 50,000 miles in electric cars in his web-show series Carpool, Robert discusses the impact of lithium battery power on our future lives. In the evening be prepared to laugh with more satirical comedy and commentary, this time focussing on the politics of
the NHS, with writer, broadcaster, campaigner and comedian Dr Phil Hammond suggesting Games to play with your Doctor. FRIDAY 16th OCTOBER hosts this year’s Wartime commemoration, with an afternoon presentation by Stewart Wardrop, General Manager of the Royal Racing Pigeon Association. Pigeons in War tells the story of the avian heroes of two World Wars. The evening sees Festival return to music with Toyah Willcox - Acoustic, Up Close and Personal, a musical and autobiographical evening from the local star of punk, pop video, stage and screen. SATURDAY 17th OCTOBER, Festival’s daytime finale is Max Keen’s annual lecture, posing the question King John Victim of circumstance or petty tyrant? Local teacher Max will attempt to prove that King John has been given a bad press by historians, with his traditional mix of props, costume and audience participation. Saturday culminates with the chance to dance the night away at Party Night at Tree Tops, West Midland Safari Park with The Bootleg Blues Brothers together with DJ Chris Martin. SUNDAY 18th OCTOBER and Festival closes with its traditional morning
Festival Church Service at St Anne’s Church. Other aspects of Festival are its Art Exhibitions, Bewdley Book Week and a Family Event 21st SEPTEMBER to 31st OCTOBER Bewdley Museum’s Wyre Forest Gallery hosts an exhibition entitled A Breath of Fresh Air showcasing the work of Shropshire artist Penelope Timmis. 3rd to 31st OCTOBER a Duck House Trail in Jubilee Gardens will display the results of a Community Arts Project. This is far more than a love story though. Mr Smith writes social history with a political conscience, and this epic but earthy love story is also an account of Hamburg after the end of WWII. It was the bleakest of times. Among the rubble, defeated Germans traded everything they had - even themselves - with victorious soldiers in order to survive. Their city in ruins, exposed to the bitter winter from Scandinavia, swathes of Hamburg’s elderly people took their own lives in shame and poverty. Mr Smith recounts that time with frankness and decency. There is no moralising about fascism; Mr Smith knows that ordinary people are but flotsam and jetsam cast about on seas beyond their control. It’s this that makes ‘Love Among the Ruins’ so moving. Harry and Friede are ordinary and extraordinary; they are regular people in an apocalyptic era, 74

Anita and Me An Interview with Ayesha Dharker Charlie O'Neill his month we had the chance to interview actress Ayesha Dharker who will be playing the character of Mrs Daljeet Kumar from Meera Syal’s much-loved novel, Anita and Me which bursts onto the stage for the very first time this autumn premiering at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre from 9th-24th October before transferring to Theatre Royal Stratford East from 29th October-21st November. The stage performance has been adapted by the award-winning playwright, Tanika Gupta and has been directed by Roxana Silbert with specially composed music by Ben and Max Ringham. Anita and Me paints a colourful portrait of village life in 1970’s West Midlands during the era of flares, power cuts and glam rock.
T
How do the stage and film versions compare? The film is quite different to the play. First of all it’s a play with music but not a musical. The music has this amazing 60’s and 70’s vibe so that changes things and also the play has a lot more attitude. Although I love the film it doesn’t deal with as many issues as the play does. They are quite different entities. There must be times when you feel tired and run down with rehearsals, shows and long hours. How do you keep yourself energized and motivated before going on stage?
Tell me a bit about the story of Anita and Me? Basically, it’s about this girl called Meena who is growing up in a little town called Tollington. It’s a coming of age story that centres around her friendship with a girl called Anita Rutter. Anita is that gorgeous bad girl that Meena is desperate to be friends with and she is delighted when they become friends. Meena’s also going through a lot at home where her mother is suffering from post-natal depression. Her whole family is coming to terms with a new baby and they are not paying as much attention to Meena which is the perfect recipe for her to go off the rails. I don’t think she ever does anything that is terrible but it shows how she changes. It takes place over a summer where she becomes who she is going to be over a series of events. The play is set in the 70s, dealing with issues like racism and a young woman having her first boyfriend, but all is done with a very light touch. It’s very funny, uplifting and is based on true experiences. You’ve recently started rehearsals for the production. How have they been going so far? They have been mental and it feels like a huge play as there are so many characters, it’s a big cast ensemble. The story is about Meena mainly though 76
www.edgemagazine.org
everybody has a story and their own moment within the play. It’s jumbled, but in a really good way. There’s a song in particular from rehearsal that is very inappropriate to sing and has really stuck in my head. Every now and again I will start to sing it and forget how terrible the words are. I’ve been trying not to sing it on my train journeys! It’s all innocent but very fun. You previously portrayed the character of Daljeet in the 2002 film production. Tell me a bit about your character and what do you enjoy most about playing her? You get to see a deeper yet darker Daljeet. The play makes it more evident that she is struggling to make everything work and then she’s hit by this depression. Her family doesn’t know how to deal with it and think she will just snap out of it. The thing that really drew me to the production is that the play has been adapted by Tanika Gupta, who is another brilliant writer and Director in her own right. Somebody I’ve always wanted to work with is Roxana Silbert, she’s a fantastic director. The cast is very female heavy, I couldn’t say no to being a part of it.
I’ve just come off stage from doing Othello at the RSC and that was a crazy schedule but really fun. Othello is an intense play with a very different energy. I knew at the beginning of the year which projects I would be taking on so I tend to plan in stages. I still feel as if coming to work is a holiday as I have a 3 year old at home, she’s amazing and mad but at work I get the chance to sit down and think, whereas usually I never get to finish my sentences as I have to run off and make or clean something. You have worked on some excellent film productions including Star Wars, The Terrorist and Arabian Nights? What’s your most memorable performance or experience in film? I’m really bad at watching my performances back. I tend to watch it once and block it out of my mind. I would say as far as my experiences go, The Terrorist is the most significant for me as it was an Independent film. I also did a film called City of Joy when I was 12 years old and that changed my life because I was working with people who I really admired including Roland Joffe who directed the film The Mission. The Terrorist gave me the chance to show what I could do. It was great to work on something that was political, unusual and Indie. The reception we received took us all by surprise and the experience of making that film actually gave me
the bug. I didn’t see myself wanting to do anything else. After making The Terrorist I threw caution to the wind and just thought “I don’t care if I never work again”. This is what I wanted to do.
best thing about my job is that you never stop learning. Having experience doesn’t mean you have more knowledge as the industry is constantly evolving. Young people these days know as much or more.
Who have been your idols and inspirations in the world of Theatre and Film?
Finally, what advice would you give to those looking to pursue a career in acting?
Just the experience of working with Shabana Azmi was great as she is a real force of nature. She was such a huge inspiration with a great social conscience. Also, the way in which Santosh Shivan directed the Terrorist was so inspiring. We shot the film in 15 days, only in natural light. We started filming at 4am until 11am and then would start again at 5pm until 7pm. Everything was done outdoors so no artificial light was used. He was so gutsy with how he used the camera and his way of working was so motivating. I had never worked with anyone like that before. He realised that actually, although its fantastic being on big film sets with a large crew, he was more in touch with how film was changing. The technology has democratised the system, whereby we can all now make films. Overall the
The one thing I would say is, try to do it yourself. If you are interested in theatre or cinema then try to take control of what you want. If you are with a theatre company or have a bunch of friends, look at trying to produce your own ideas.
and it is so heart breaking but people are taking more control over their goals. Places like the Birmingham REP are very open to talent and new writers so there’s no harm in approaching them. Going to auditions when you haven’t done anything previously is daunting and disempowering. I always say never accept your limits.
That’s the one regret I have, as when you are young, you are fearless. It’s the best position to be in. I’m too nervous now to write or create something of my own. I meet lots of young actors and film makers and they just go out there and make a film using whatever they can get their hands on and that’s really empowering. Not only are they doing what they love but they show their capabilities. It’s a tough industry. I believe talent eventually finds its way. I know a lot of talented individuals who aren’t working

SEAT Leon Cupra ST
Fastest estate car to ever make it round the Nürburgring Lucie Abu-Zalaf
A
t the moment, if you’re in the market for a hot estate you are spoilt for choice. With that in mind, I took the SEAT Leon Cupra ST for a spin to see how it stacks up. Style, practicality and speed- three things that are easy to achieve separately, but can be tough to bring together effectively. The Cupra badge has been well known for bringing super hot hatches to the market place, the latest featuring a 2.0l 276bhp engine, the same one which has been dropped into the Leon Cupra ST. Combining this hot hatch performance with estate practicality is what has made the ST a real match made in heaven. This is SEAT's first foray into the fast estate genre, coming up against well known models such as the Ford Focus ST Estate and the VW Golf R Estate, it’s a busy sector to try and crack. I collected my Leon Cupra ST from Listers SEAT in Worcester and after a brief tour of the controls, was let loose. From the outside, you can’t deny that it is a good looking car, even with the extended body work of the estate version. The sharp lines and angular wing mirrors made so iconic from the hatchback,
78
www.edgemagazine.org
transfer to the ST exceptionally well. The changes to the Cupra model are subtle, 19” alloys with glorious red brake callipers tucked away. The inevitable Cupra branding sneaks its way in, but does so with style. Inside the cabin, apart from the Cupra button on the dash, the interior is well laid out and functional. But that doesn’t mean it looks boring, far from it. The sleek lines from outside, carry on inside and with full leather (optional extra), Bluetooth and Sat Nav as standard there really isn’t much that could be faulted. The ST is 27cm longer than the hatchback, but all of that is accounted for in bodywork, it’s on the same wheelbase, so you get the benefit of being able to sit fully grown adults comfortably in the back, but only adding 45kg of weight extra. It also has an ample amount of boot space, 587 litres with the seats up and if you put the seats down, which is incredibly simple to do using the quick release lever, that grows to a pretty sizeable 1407 litres. Out on the roads, the Leon ST Cupra can be almost whatever you want it to be. Driving through the city centre it is comfortable and refined and is no bother at all in the nose to tail traffic, but it’s
when you get out of town that you can really see what it has to offer. Pressing the Cupra button on the dash gives you four options, Comfort, Sport, Cupra or Individual, where you can personalise the drive setup. Obviously I went straight to Cupra mode. This tightens up the suspension, adds more weight to the steering and sends the throttle into a frenzy of revs. In full attack mode, this really does mean that you can throw the car into pretty much any bend with a good amount of speed and thanks to the very fancy limited slip differential, you’ll make it round. The vital statistics of the Leon ST Cupra are good too, with the 2.0l turbo charged petrol engine having a very respectable 0-60 time of only 6.1 seconds and a top speed limited to 155mph. It averages 42.2 mpg on paper and won’t break the bank, coming in at £29,780 on the road. This car is bags of fun, but practical too and in my opinion looks an awful lot better than its closest competitors. If you want something that has plenty of space, combined with some serious pace then this is the car to go and look at.

Vigilance needed on cyber security Take steps to protect yourself Tom Ware
O
nline security is becoming an increasingly pressing issue for anyone conducting financial transactions online. Attacks are becoming more sophisticated and the sums involved increasingly large. Investors need to be increasingly vigilant to minimise the impact of these attacks. Although relatively few end up permanently out of pocket, it can take considerable time and administration to recoup losses. Standard Life alerted its clients to a hacking incident last year, where fraudsters had attempted to withdraw client investments. As a result, it identified a number of common factors in rogue emails sent out to individuals and their advisers. • The correspondence is always by email and comes from a genuine email account. • The email may have attached an email chain of a previous conversation between the adviser and their client, which adds authenticity to the new request. • The email may suggest the client is not available by phone; explanations include illness or travel/being out of the country. • The correspondence is likely to include a request to change the nominated bank account; this may even include a copy or attachment of a falsified bank statement. • Requests to encash the product or withdraw funds are often flagged ‘urgent’ and may request payment by CHAPS or Telegraphic transfer to speed up the transfer of monies. • Initial email exchanges may simply request current plan values and other information, in order to build up intelligence and a rapport.

At Churchill, we do not accept requests for encashment solely by email and will always follow up by phone. This helps protect our clients to some extent, but we would urge them to minimise the risk of this happening: ‘Get Safe Online’, is a UK government online service that gives practical advice on how clients can protect themselves, their computers and mobiles devices.

Inked Palette Presented by Inkluded
U
K tattoo blog Inkluded is collaborating with Deasil Art Gallery to present an exhibition featuring work by a selection of UK tattoo artists. Inked Palette will run from 3 – 20 October 2015 at Deasil Art Gallery in Leamington Spa. The multimedia exhibition will showcase the work of 15 tattoo artists through different mediums. As well as artworks on traditional materials such as canvas and paper, Inked Palette will see artists utilise customary materials and share their sketches and drawings to offer an insight into their creative process. Tattoo photography will form part of the exhibition, and there will also be exciting installations for members of the public to interact with and explore.
Founder of Inkluded, Beccy Rimmer, is passionate about the thinking behind the exhibition. “At Inkluded, we’re passionate about showcasing and sharing the craft of tattoo art and making information about this thriving industry available to those who may be new to it. This country’s creative tattoo scene is fast-growing and flourishing with talented artists, remarkable artwork and innovative styles – we thought it was time we unveiled the creativity and originality
of the UK’s tattoo mastery through this exciting exhibition.”
Seven artists have been announced so far, with more to be confirmed.
Deasil Art Gallery’s owner and curator, Kate Livingston: “Here at Deasil, we like doing something different. Inked Palette will really push the boundaries of a traditional exhibition. It will challenge both the artists involved and people who come and see it. Tattooing is a selfless talent that more tattoo artists should be recognised for. We want to make this exhibition fully accessible for everyone, no matter what their knowledge, background or experience with tattoos.”
Inked Palette runs from 3 – 20 October 2015 at Deasil Art Gallery, 44 Oxford Street, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, CV32 4RA. Admission: FREE. Opening times: Wednesday – Saturday 11am – 5pm, Sunday 12pm – 4pm.
Cardiff-based tattoo artist and one of the artists showcasing work in the exhibition, Shaun Von Sleaze, commented: “It’s nice for there to be a physical place where the general public can have access to the work we can create. Unfortunately, tattoo artists are still bunched into a hole that doesn’t really fit, I’m not sure it ever did. Art is art regardless of placement and it would be nice to show that we are artists, not what an outdated stereotype likes to portray.” Deasil Art is a new gallery situated in the heart of England, in Leamington Spa, with direct trains to a whole host of major UK cities including Birmingham Oxford, Manchester, York, London and Reading. Vampomime The Belgrade Theatre, Coventry Sat 5 Dec – Sat 2 Jan
Finding a great Christmas night out that doesn’t suck can be a real pain in the neck – but fear not Vampomime promises to be a fangtastic Yuletide treat – with added bite! It’s not easy putting on a pantomime when you’re a theatre company entirely run by vampires. This year’s production of Beauty and the Beast is beset by practical problems – they can’t enter the stage until they’ve been invited in and the glare of the lighting is really painful on their eyes. They’re also distracted by an uncontrollable bloodlust for virgins, although they don’t anticipate that being a big problem with Coventry audiences. Will beauty get driven batty? Will the beast love in vein? Will the audience die laughing? Whatever happens, a monstrously good time is guaranteed for all!
