t’s harvest time. And as we mourn the summer months and make preparations for the winter chill, we can really enjoy the seasonal transition. There’s plenty to look forward to; brisk morning walks, warm fires and seasonal meals. And here at Edge, we’ve been looking at the interior designs that make you want to stay inside, and the new foodie hotspots you need to try this season. Terrace on the Hill is the new café cum fine dining restaurant in Great Malvern, serving up classic flavour combinations with contemporary finesse, while Marco Pierre White has opened his latest venture in Stratford-upon-Avon with a New York Deli inspired menu. Of course the colder months wouldn’t be the same without sumptuous interiors and we have inspiration from Hatton and Harding as well as a profile of Sarah Jane’s Interiors as our Escape the Chains pick this month.
Michael Abu-Zalaf Editor-in-Chief
The theatres are bursting with exciting new productions and the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry has something really special to offer: Propaganda Swing – the captivating combination of WWII intrigue and drama set against a backdrop of glitz, glamour and Big Band swagger. The Edge team is also excited to announce our move into Gloucestershire. We’re really excited to be exploring the next county and all the fantastic local businesses there are for us to discover. If you know of events, popular eateries and cool independents you think would look great in Edge, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Make sure you keep up-to-date with all the latest local stories, features and exciting events on our website. On behalf of the team at Edge, have a great September and we hope to see you all again in October. The Wood Norton is a real window on Worcestershire. Perched high up overlooking the gentle ooze of the River Avon and Vale of Evesham. The Hall, completed in 1897 for exiled French Royalty is a glorious Victorian opulence set within stunning grounds and terraces, and inside room after room much as Royalty left it with traditional panelling and carvings throughout almost every room. Weddings at The Wood Norton are a well-established tradition, going back to 1907 when the house was the venue for a Royal Wedding! More intimate celebrations can now be accommodated within the Hall and our ‘new’ wedding venue - ‘The Orangery’ is now available for all kinds of celebrations. Set back from the hotel high up over formal gardens taking full advantage of the outstanding views with a beautiful glass frontage, The Orangery will accommodate weddings of 130 for a seated meal and up to 240 in the evening. The Wood Norton is licensed for Civil Ceremonies. Your very special day is expertly co-ordinated and managed by a small team you will grow to know and trust, to deliver all the right kind of memories for you to savour. If you have just got engaged –

HAIR SAVIOURS For those bad weather days Rebecca Burden
W
e all know that the weather affects our hair. Whether its dryness and frizz from the humidity of summer or the kinks and drops of curls in the pouring rain, it’s unfortunately one of those things that only ‘girl scout’ preparation can prime your
locks for.
The number one piece of advice in extreme weather conditions is don’t fight your natural locks; enhance and embrace them. For everything in between here are three steps that can help hold together your hard worked on hair. Invest in a silk pillowcase If you are really hard-core about your hair the perfect way to not only look after it but assure a solid foundation during the day is to get a good night’s sleep. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase has long been a beauty essential for beauty gurus worldwide and is a really simple step in this weather battle. Silk pillowcases help your hair retain its own natural moisture and as silk is anti-static you end up with less of that morning frizziness to tackle. Silk also contains the same naturally occurring proteins as hair and skin which act to reduce prevent breakage in the hair shafts and can be a tool the battle against wrinkles. Gingerlily Silk Pillowcase £39.00 Oil up those hair shafts Having oily hair may sound like a complete disaster but used sparingly a good hair oil makes the difference between out of the control hair you dread and hair you want. Using a hair oil will help seal in any style you create and once topped with hairspray adds a practically waterproof barrier onto the hair’s surface. Great examples of hair oils are Garnier’s Sleek Restorer Oil (£9.99) and Kerastase’s Exlixir Ultime Oil (£25.00) Both oils have a formula that helps give a smoothing effect whilst locking in the hair’s own natural oil and preventing any uncontrollable fly-aways. Lock it all in For any style you create, a ‘lock-in’ product is required to ensure it survives any weather along the way until you get home. Adding a hairspray or light gel over an oil will be that last touch to your hair armour. Aveda’s ControlForce Firm Hold Hairspray (£20) can be used by any hair type and is an unsung hero in the hair spray world. It comes in full and travel sizes for ease and really secures the style you have created. If you prefer a gel finish try the Joico Joigel Firm Styling Gel (£9.00) as although it’s small it is very mighty and doesn’t makes your locks feel suffocated. www.bbyb.co.uk

TIMEPIECES FROM TUDOR Tustains jewellers launch the new collection
T
his month sees the launch of an exclusive range of Tudor watches here in the UK and Tustains Jewellers has been selected as the sole agents in Leamington Spa. Relaunching in the UK, the Tudor brand was established in 1926, when Rolex began to manufacture and distribute their watches under a different name in Geneva, Switzerland. In its 88 year history, Tudor collections have incorporated elegant dress designs with robust specifications suitable for action and adventure. Tudor has always been synonymous with dependability and a rich pedigree and Tustains shares a similar reputation. The team, headed up by brothers Joe and Tom Milner is proud of their commitment to the luxury retail market, their in-depth knowledge of timepieces and their great customer care.
“Many of our customers will be looking forward to seeing the new watches in store and being some of first to wear the new models”, says Tom, co-director of Tustains. “Watches are usually previewed to the trade at the Basle show in April and there is always excitement when the new collections are actually
released on sale. Because this is a national launch by a famous brand we know that Tudor watches will be eagerly awaited; it’s a bit like buying a new car with the latest registration plate number”. This year customers will be able to register their interest prior to the official launch date by visiting the Regent Street store. Tudor watches have long been associated with elite military personnel, including divers with the Royal Navy sailors, the US Navy (USN) and the Marine Nationale Franҫaise (MN). The superior quality of their manufacture means that they never need to be specially developed for their use. Their ability to withstand the extreme pressures of deep dives comes as standard.
21
EdgeMagazine The new collection features contrasting styles, including Heritage Black Bay and Heritage Ranger. The former offers a window into several decades of adventures in deep water. It’s icy and sharp with slender, elongated lugs. The domed black dial displays generous luminescent hour markers for perfect visibility. Imbued with the pioneering spirit of the far North and epic tales of sled dogs braving solitary frozen lands, the Heritage Ranger reinterprets the iconic models with modern touches. With a satin finish, steel parts and technical prowess, the Ranger brings back the legendary world of a bygone era. The new Tudor range will sit alongside other exclusive brands at Tustains jewellers in Leamington Spa. Watch enthusiasts and collectors
22
can build their collection with Breitling, Omega, Longines, Tissot and Tag Heuer. As watch specialists, the Tustains team is also qualified to help with any brand of watch that needs a service or specialist repair work. TERRACE ON THE HILL: A REVIEW Lucinda Bunn
T
he Terrace on the Hill is as lovely as it sounds. New to Great Malvern, the café by day, fine-dining restaurant by Friday and Saturday night already has a waiting list. We were lucky enough to go and enjoy Michelin-starred chef Jason Lynas’ creations. The restaurant serves a taster menu two nights of the week. It’s not unlike the über cool underground dinner clubs you get in the city, only here, each week your host is a professional chef. This professional chef has a talent for elegant plates with big-fisted flavours. Canapés come in threes, with goats’ cheese crackers, tuna tartare and homemade parmesan straws. Next, the starter and a pea soup, crème fraîche and crispy pancetta. It’s a classic combination, reinvented with the fragrant garden peas balanced with cooling crème fraîche and the salty bacon. The second course is a playful demonstration of Jason’s skill. ‘Cauliflower cheese’ as the menu reads, features a thin film of roasted cauliflower with parmesan foam and cream cheese. The food looks beautiful too. Of course it is
24
understood by all high-end chefs that we eat with our eyes but not all chefs can make good food look pretty on the plate. Jason Lynas can. The food of the Norse gods, halfbaked gravadlax topped with fresh dill comes to the table; light, refreshing and accompanied by a mustard sauce with a kick. But the main event must be the Barbary duck breast that follows, which is just the most tender, flavoursome piece of meat. Sliced and served with fondant potato, baby pak choi and a honey, soy and ginger jus. The Asian influence takes this plate to the next level and injects a modern flare into these classic, happy flavour combinations. It’s inventive, yes, but simple too. Jason Lynas creates beautiful flavours that treat the table, without the fuss and confusion. The décor has a modern Art Deco style that fits the warm and fun atmosphere. Not many eateries manage to navigate the fine dining line between pretentious and polished but the Terrace on the Hill has done just that. This restaurant isn’t for diners who like formal
service and grand ceremonies; this is for real foodies who just fancy something fancy. Part of what gives the Terrace on the Hill its character is the front of house team. Marie welcomed us and our server Alice brought and explained each plate with a seamless service that felt natural and not over-rehearsed. This really is the best way to eat, enjoying the atmosphere and taking
www.edgemagazine.org
your time to enjoy each course. With a taster menu you get a real feel for a chef’s signature style; this is foodie heaven. There are two dessert courses. The first is a hazelnut panna cotta with passion fruit coulis. It’s sweet and tart so it awakens your taste buds after the procession of other courses. Ever so light, the panna cotta melts in your mouth. We finished with Poire belle Helene – a French classic. Soft, sweet poached pear with a rich chocolate mousse and dark chocolate soil; a textural sensation. This is a meal to share with a close friend. It’s sacred. The song says the best things in life are free. This menu says different. But for fantastic food in a vibrant restaurant, it’s a fair price to pay.

STAR OF INDIA We meet Pushkar’s Rai Singh Lucinda Bunn
F
ew people have influenced the Birmingham food scene as much as Rai Singh, whose restaurant, Pushkar, on Birmingham’s Broad Street has secured authentic North Indian cuisine a place in the contemporary culinary canon. Tell us a bit about your background. Well, I wasn’t always a restaurateur. I was born in Handsworth and attended Grove Lane School, then George Dixon School before enrolling in St Phillips Sixth Form College. I made it as far as Cambridge University where I studied Economics. I had a wonderful time there but I think my focus was always on the social side of things rather than the academia.
27
EdgeMagazine I had a tempting offer from Goldman Sachs in 1995 but I opted for a PR position in the world of fashion. It was very exciting and I met a lot of interesting creatives. This was all before I spent time in Tel Aviv recruiting for MTV – another memorable experience. It was my brother’s idea to start a restaurant. He convinced me that it was a good idea and that I could pull together the creative side of it all. I had to come up with a concept and a brand before this big pitch for the Broad Street venue the next morning. We were the biggest risk for the investors and I knew that but they must have seen something they liked! What does Pushkar mean and what experience do you offer your diners? Pushkar means ‘born to a flower’. I think being the product of mine and my late brother’s vision, the name has different meanings. It also evokes a light, elegant image, which is something we strive for in the décor and branding of the Pushkar. We want diners to come in from the hustle, bustle and noise to a chic oasis. That’s not to say it’s too quiet. I always say that the thing that sets us apart is the ambience in the restaurant. It’s buzzy, fun and inviting. Everyone is relaxed and having a nice evening. How involved are you in the restaurant? I’m here most evenings. I welcome diners and make sure everything is running smoothly. I like to oversee things, from the preparation of the restaurant through to the service. I have acquired a nickname of ‘The Memory Man’ for my attention to detail and the fact that I remember my customers’ names and their favourite dishes. Tell us a bit about your head chef, Bishal Rasaily. Bishal was the first chef we spoke to when we started Pushkar. He was just superb and he’s been with us ever since. I give him free reign in the kitchen and he has the best ingredients to work with. Growing
28
up in Darjeeling in northeast India, Bishal learned to cook from his mother, building his knowledge of eastern spices, herbs and recipes. He is the reason why I’m proud of the authenticity of our food at Pushkar. It is the food I ate growing up and the food that I remember bringing everyone together. I think it still does that now at the restaurant. What projects have you got coming up? We open our brand new restaurant in Edgbaston this month. It’s very exciting. The name ‘Praza’ means brother and it has been important for me to honour my late brother. He always wanted to expand and so it’s a very special time. We will be continuing our celebration of North Indian Cuisine, but I have hopes to create a grilling menu where we’ll be trying out all kinds of different things – cooked Indian style, of course. I’m looking forward to the new look too; we’ve gone for an Art Deco inspired aesthetic with monochrome colourways, glass and it’s going to look very cool. 245 Broad Street Birmingham B1 2HQ 0121 6437978 www.pushkardining.com

GOOD WINE, GOOD LIVING Building a vineyard abroad Laura Clay
B
ack from your hols with thoughts of a change in lifestyle and a fistful of Vineyard for Sale particulars? Thinking of giving up the daily commute to commune with nature instead? Before you do so, read this. Brits making a life abroad is nothing new, and even Brits making a living making wine nowadays is not rare. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy, nor is it for everyone. People take life-changing decisions for many reasons; Jonathan Hesford’s was one of the more understandable. He and his wife were living one block away from the World Trade Centre in New York in September 2001; they lost friends and colleagues there. They uprooted, decided to follow their dream and eventually bought a vineyard, they now call Domaine Treloar, producing wine in the village of Trouillas in Roussillon in South West France. Jonathan is a true vigneron – he tends the vines, he makes the wine. Having previously worked in IT, he had to learn new skills by first attending Lincoln University in New Zealand coming top in an oenology degree, aged 36, followed by hands-on, unpaid work experience right here in the Midlands at Half Penny Green Vineyard. He learnt well; his wines are good. He wants them to express the grape varieties, the region, the soil and they do that in spades. They also express his personality – they’re serious, intense, You can win a couple of bottles of Château Bauduc by answering the question below:
Where is Château Bauduc? A) Bordeaux B) Burgundy C) England Submit your answer to wine@edgemagazine. org by 30th September giving your name and contact details. You must be 18 to enter. Terms and conditions apply.
moody, shy to come forward but when they do they are complex and interesting wines and hugely rewarding. But however a good a winemaker you are you still have to market and sell those wines and this is not as easy as you might think especially with the high duty and VAT rates we ‘enjoy’ in the UK. Gavin Quinney, another brave British soul who gave up his life to the vine, is hot on this subject but he is very good on the marketing front and his wines sell. He and his wife, Angela, make great value, attractive wines in Bordeaux and customers of their Château Bauduc include Rick Stein and Gordon Ramsay - and me. Their issues are less with finding customers and much more to do with the vagaries of Mother Nature. Bordeaux has a nice mild maritime climate. It suffers little from spring frosts, it rarely gets too hot and usually has enough sunshine to ripen the grapes. But every now and then a storm hits leaving behind a trial of destruction and disappointment. Bauduc has been badly hit by hail. Twice. Each time decimating a whole vineyard and a year’s supply of grapes. There’s nothing to be done other than bearing a stiff upper lip and crossing your fingers for next year. In the Languedoc, Katie Jones suffered what she calls ‘a random act of violence’ by, one assumes, jealous neighbours. While she was abroad her tanks were emptied, the new wine drained away so that she had no Domaine Jones Blanc 2012 to sell. She thought about throwing in the towel – for a second - then got back to marketing and selling, and found that consumers and the wine trade were able to support her and see her through. Her website home page cites, ‘Je ne regrette rien’. Jonathan, Gavin and Katie prove that we Brits can make great wine abroad, can weather those storms and probably thrive in doing so. But making good wine (and a good living) is not a walk in the park and should be thought about seriously before telling your boss to stuff his job. Do what I do and appreciate vineyards, wines and the people who make them from the comfort of your own home! Glass in hand. Check out these websites and buy the wines:

MARCO PIERRE WHITE NEW YORK ITALIAN We meet manager James Curran Lucinda Bunn
M
arco’s New York Italian opened last month in Stratford-upon-Avon. Experienced local restaurateur, James Curran, is the restaurant’s manager. And who better to tell us all about the New York inspired menu and the high quality service in Stratford’s new vibrant eatery.
Can you tell us a bit about your background in the restaurant business? I have spent the last 19 years working in the hospitality industry, working with some very big, wellknown brands and small quality independent restaurants all over the country including Newcastle, London and Manchester. I have also had my own award-winning food led pub and opened all of the catering outlets for the Shakespeare birthplace trust. What can diners expect from the new Marco Pierre White New York Italian? Simple, classic New York Italian food served in glamorous surroundings just how Marco likes it. With food prices ranging from only £8.50 for pizza to a £25 steak, it’s suitable for all budgets and tastes. What makes Stratford the prime location for a venture like this? Stratford is a fantastic area for locals and visitors alike with lots to do and see, also lots of places to eat, but nothing quite like Marco’s. We are situated at the heart of Shakespeare country with direct links to Warwick, Kenilworth, Solihull, Coventry, and the Cotswolds making us an ideal destination for a day out, bite to eat and a cocktail in the bar or on the sun terrace. We are ideally situated for a pre-theatre nibble or drink too. How would you describe the décor? The restaurant is a stylish mix of modern and traditional that fits both the brand whilst remaining true to the style of the building and the town around it. Being a listed building, the interior differs slightly to the other Marco’s restaurants, as we had to work with its existing features. Elements such as the black and white chequered flooring - which is seen throughout the Marco’s restaurants elsewhere - had to be incorporated into other features instead. There are also a few quirky features such as a bust of Shakespeare and of course, the now famous ‘Marco chair’. Tell us about the food – what dishes say New York Italian food? Pizza, pasta and steak are all typical of New York Italian restaurant; good, simple food that’s cooked well. Thin crust pizza, hot dogs and burgers just like in New York and home-cooked classic pasta dishes like lasagne and carbonara. What about ingredients, where are you sourcing your meat and veg? Our meat is sourced from the best local butcher with vegetables from British farms. The bar is going to be serving some opulent cocktails – what’s your favourite on the menu? The Italian Mojito, a twist on the classic with Aperol and prosecco. 17-19 Chapel Street Stratford-upon-Avon CV37 6ER 01789 293949 www.marcostratford.co.uk

Brindleyplace on hunt for this year’s chilli champ Brindleyplace is looking for brave participants from across the West Midlands to enter the estate’s popular chilli eating contest at the annual Birmingham Chilli Festival. Now in its fourth year, the Chilli Festival will take place on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 September and, this year, the family event will boast a theme of ‘celebrating chillies around the world’. Largely regarded as the highlight of the festival, the chilli eating competition will take place at 3pm on Saturday and organisers of the event are now on the hunt for 18 chilli enthusiasts to sign up and compete in the hottest challenge of the summer. This year, participants will be put to the test to eat some of the world’s hottest chillies including Naga, Scotch Bonnet, Thai Red and Poblano chillies in a bid to be crowned the next Chilli King or Queen. 2 Brunswick Street Brindleyplace Birmingham B1 2JF www.brindleyplace.com
Childhood fridge raider becomes Birmingham hotel’s head chef As a small boy growing up in Chennai, South India, Shankar Rangaswamy was often told off for raiding his parents’ fridge. “It was not so much that I was hungry but more that I simply loved food,” admitted the Birmingham Marriott’s new executive chef. So it was no surprise that he went to work in the hotel and catering industry after his family moved to the UK. Shankar, who has worked in a number of hotels, comes to Birmingham from the flagship London Marriott, Grosvenor Square, where he cooked his way up through the more senior ranks to become deputy to the head chef. He said: “I learnt so much at the Grosvenor, where we regularly catered for banquets of 600 guests, and I was certainly thrown in at the deep end the first time my boss went off on holiday.” Now Shankar, 35, is settling in and getting to know his 11-strong catering team before looking at ways of putting his own personal mark on the menus. Meanwhile, he is providing a home from home touch for the Air India crews who fly into Birmingham Airport and use the hotel as their stopover base by preparing just the kind of meals they want after a long flight. 12 Hagley Road Five Ways Birmingham B16 8SJ 0121 452 1144 www.marriott.com

Alcester Autumn Festival Organisers report that bookings for the Autumn Festival are well ahead of the very successful Spring Festival in May. This is despite a far stricter policy this festival on both the numbers in each category and a closer scrutiny of the quality and interest of products offered. The aim is to be purely a high quality food festival – no bouncy castles or background musak. The range of products booked is remarkable, reflecting the growing national reputation of the AAFF, and organisers hope to exceed the estimated 20,000 visitors at the next event. This has to be partly attributable to the national magazine “County Homes and Interiors’ (IPC Media) important food section, which rated Alcester as one of the three best food festivals in the UK. You should also know that the festival is free, with free park and ride.
Apple Day will be taking place on Sunday 28th September and this year Avoncroft Museum will be linking up with Jinney Ring Craft Centre in Hanbury and Wythall Transport Museum for a traditional celebration of our local heritage. At Avoncroft, visitors are invited to bring along their own apples for pressing demonstrations. The 200 year old, horse-drawn perry mill will be in operation and Avoncroft’s 19th century windmill will also be open. The miniature train will be running and there will be an apple-themed trail that visitors can follow around the site. For those who need a bit of a break, the Tea Room will have lots of apple-based goodies. The Jinney Ring will have local producers selling cider, perry and there will be traditional activities including apple bobbing and apple archery. The 28th September will also be the final day of the popular sculpture trail, so visitors will have a last chance to see this. Every hour the vintage “Apple Bus” (it previously starred in an episode of “Miss Marple”) will be running between Avoncroft Museum and Jinney Ring. TAKE TIME OUT FOR TAPAS At the Olive Branch, Worcester Steve Picker
T
he Olive Branch sits within one of Worcester’s most historic buildings. Split across three floors, the exposed brickwork and original features make this eatery worth visiting. Of course, the food is great too.
This Mediterranean Bistro celebrates seasonal ingredients and fresh flavours; just like its continental counterparts. The lunch and evening menus bring together Spanish, Greek and Italian classics whilst showcasing new combinations created by the head chef. Sharing boards including mezze and antipasti as well as the delicious house salads make the Olive Branch a great lunch stop to dine with friends and with healthier alternatives. The à la carte menu offers tasty risotto noir and paella to share as well as steaks and Moroccan chicken. Add nibbles and warm bread for extra homemade treats from the kitchen. On this occasion it was the tapas menu that sparked interest; a great option if you want to try a bit of everything. Enjoy a combination of paella, lamb koftas with tzatziki and Moroccan chicken skewers marinated in paprika, chilli, cumin, garlic and oregano. But best was the fried chorizo in olive oil; so simple, so delicious. You can add more if you like with plenty to choose from; sun-dried tomato houmous, king prawn pil pil, tortilla sacromonte and cod and pancetta fish cakes. All the ingredients are sourced locally where possible with the greatest care taken to support free range farmers too. With desserts like tiramisu, limoncello cheesecake and affogato espresso, it would be hard to say no. All the ice creams are locally sourced and there is also a flavour of the day sorbet. Just like with the mains, there’s a tapas option here too so you can share a plate of six mini desserts. If you like cocktails, there are some fantastic concoctions at the Olive Branch, like the Dirty Monk; a vodka, amaretto and frangelico cocktail served with ice in a martini glass. But nothing quite brightens your day like a Sicilian Sun Cocktail. Vodka, peach Schnapps, orange, fresh lime juice and a touch of grenadine. Powerful and zesty, this one will lift you up. The restaurant brings together the European bistro style with a modern feel that’s great for large groups or intimate dinners. There’s the wine bar too, so you can enjoy a drink before you’re seated or a cocktail after your meal. Food can even be served in the bar if you like the atmosphere. The Olive Branch also takes bookings for private parties, whether it’s a wedding reception, christening or birthday celebration, it’s a unique space that can accommodate any party. Post-work drinks or a coffee in the courtyard, the Olive Branch is great for a meet up with friends or a full evening of eating and entertainment. 6 Church Street Worcester Worcestershire WR1 2RH 01905 616669 www.olivebranchworcester.co.uk

NAILCOTE HALL 2014 Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship
A
fter four days of outstanding entertainment that saw the course record broken and hole-in-ones galore, young European Tour star Eddie Pepperell secured the 2014 Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship title after a tense play-off with TP Tour Qualifier Jak Hamblett. In a record-breaking year, spectators flocked to Nailcote Hall to watch golfing legends, top professionals and great celebrities compete at the country’s foremost Par 3 event. Organised by Champions (UK) plc, headline sponsors Farmfoods once again pledged a £100,000 prize fund to attract a field of elite players. As the Sky Sports cameras captured the action as it unfolded, a host of celebrities dusted off their golf clubs for the first Celeb-Am on Tuesday including: the great cricketing all-rounder, Sir Garfield Sobers; former Olympic swimmer, Mark Foster; comedian Jasper Carrott OBE; Strictly Come Dancing Judge, Len Goodman; and Ashes-winning cricketer, Matthew Hoggard MBE. The Professional Championship began on Wednesday 6th August and was a closely-fought contest between golfing icons and current professionals. As well as Jacklin, Woosnam and Lawrie, the field featured Tommy Horton MBE, Gary Wolstenholme MBE, DJ Russell, Peter Baker, Paul Broadhurst and Eddie Pepperell. After the first day’s play, talented young golfer Jak Hamblett led by a single stroke with three past winners hot on his heels: Mark Mouland, Peter Baker and DJ Russell. Huge crowds gathered on Thursday for the conclusion of the Professional Championship and they were treated to an incredible golfing spectacle. With Hamblett leading at the start of play but yet to tee-off, Gary Wolstenholme and Paul Lawrie stormed into a joint lead of -6. Lawrie’s incredible round of -8 was a course record at Nailcote Hall and it is easy to see why he
40
has the nickname ‘Chippy’ for his immaculate short game. As the day wore on, a battle for first place ensued before Hamblett eventually tied the lead with Eddie Pepperell to force a play-off. Aspiring young talent Pepperell eventually came through on top by chipping in on the third play-off hole. The day also saw an incredible four holes-in-one for Gary Wolstenholme, Tommy Horton, DJ Russell and Raymond Russell to take the total for the championship to six, after Tom Reid and Gary Emerson achieved the feat on Wednesday. The leading team was David Nelson partnered with former Masters Champion Ian Woosnam OBE. Carl Mason won the prize for the Super Seniors contest winning £5,000 for the second year running, and Luke Turbutt won the Norma C Herd Silver Salver for leading amateur closely followed by Tom Charley and Sarah Herd in second and third respectively. Friday was the final day of the Championship and the second Celeb-Am tournament. ESCAPE THE CHAINS Sarah Jane’s Interiors Lucinda Bunn
K
nown for her extraordinary eye for design, colour and fabric, Sarah-Jane has a modern approach to interior design, working with her clients to provide a personal service; from the initial design ideas through to decorating and building works. Sarah and her team of seamstresses, decorators and carpenters create and restore beautiful furniture and textiles to make each project individual and unique. Sarah worked in the creative industry for fifteen years before turning a Victorian building into a full interior design service in Great Malvern, equipped with a sewing workshop and a studio displaying her work and the artisan furniture made by her team. Communicating design or styles, likes and dislikes, is often hard for clients but Sarah builds a rapport with everyone she meets. With years of experience working in people’s homes, Sarah is quick to recognise personal style and getting to know a client allows her to understand their lifestyle and the ways in which they will benefit practically from a design lift. Sarah works all over the UK, designing beautiful interiors for people’s homes. The key for Sarah is the individual; building a unique aesthetic inspired by her clients. Sarah’s team of talented crafts people with over 60 years experience between them provide a bespoke service, designing and making furniture from scratch or working with original pieces and antiques that need reworking. ‘We’re doing a lot of upholstery at the moment. I think people have finally realised that mass
produced sofas don’t last very long and instead they want family antiques re-upholstered or they want their good quality soft furnishings updated with new fabric’, says Sarah. ‘It’s great because we can do that all for them, and it makes such an amazing difference, of course it’s more environmentally friendly too’. Our sewing workshops provide a service for all soft furnishings required for the home’. It’s really important for Sarah to keep her business local and her sourcing British where she can. Many of the fabric companies she works with are British-made. But that doesn’t mean there’s a limited choice. Quite the opposite. Sarah Jane Interiors has one of the largest pattern book libraries in Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Sarah has been collecting fabric swatches from all over the world for decades and she’s become a master in colour schemes and creating designs mixing texture with colour. As well as supporting local talent and trade, Sarah Jane’s Interiors takes on an apprentice every three years to learn the ropes and develop their skills in design, learning to complete scale drawings, floor plans and mood boards and becoming proficient in sewing or carpentry. It’s a fantastic opportunity although the space has already been filled for the next apprenticeship. Clients depend upon Sarah for her guidance and professionalism, but particularly her hands-on involvement in the project. As such, Sarah is often called upon to design second and even third homes. Sarah believes that understanding her clients and anticipating their evolving taste are key elements of good design. For more information check out the Sarah Jane’s Interiors website or make an appointment with Sarah at the studio. 28-30 Belle Vue Terrace Malvern Worcestershire WR14 4PZ 01684 891392 www.sarahjanesinteriors.co.uk

RIDING HIGH Creating the ideal equestrian retreat David Hatton
M
y passion for all things horsey started from a young age. Dapple, the shady grey rocking horse from the BBC’s Play School was largely to blame...and then one Christmas morning the curtains were pulled back and Dandy, the little Arab grey pony stood nibbling away at the lawn. I was hooked. Combining passions is always great fun, so the marriage of equine interiors is a joy for us. Whether you’re a lifelong equine fanatic, an admirer of horsey sports, or you just love our four-legged friends, it doesn’t have to stop at the stable. More and more we seem to be surrounded by all things equestrian and stylishly themed spaces seem to be so on trend. Vintage soft leather saddles or a trunk to provide a statement and life-size artwork creates a classic look, with timeless beauty, which balances powerful s equestrian signature style. You only have to have seen the Royal pageantry in London over recent years to realise that there is something quite regal about the horse and what it represents. Like the beasts themselves, there is often an element of elegance and beauty with inspired interiors pieces. So, from displaying your favourite horse canvass, a plaid throw (Mulberry Homes Elgar check is a particular favourite), a pair of vintage hunting boots (we have a battered pair in our hall at home which we love) the design statement is classic and can be displayed in a chic, sophisticated, elegant or casual way. Imagine it’s an afternoon at the hunt (no foxes harmed obviously) with laid-out crystal cut stemware on silver trays. Timeless chocolate leather furniture sits alongside lavish gilt and sumptuous dark woods. The essence of equestrian chic is enjoying the outdoors and integrating natural elements into your décor. Try displaying unpretentious seasonal arrangements of flowers and berries in large pots or classic vases. Whether a small accessory or an entire themed space, equestrian elements can bring an opulent feel to a room and items can often be fun as well as functional. Inspired? Or just need a little help holding the reins, then call in and see u, although we can’t supply a Dapple or a Dandy. A SPECIAL AUCTION Fellows and Sons Auctioneers
F
ellows Auctioneers has a mid-20th century tiara that converts to a necklace, with an estimated diamond weight of 15 – 17cts. It is really rare to find a tiara of this age because so many of them were dismantled to create smaller pieces of jewellery. It will be sold complete with its original box, which has allowed Fellows to identify that this tiara was originally purchased from the prestigious Burlington arcade near Bond street. The Burlington Arcade opened in 1819 for “the sale of jewellery and fancy articles”, which still rings true today as the whole area is a destination for all luxury items, including jewellery. Estimated between £6,000 and £8,000, it would be a beautiful and timeless accessory for any bride. Fellows also has an exquisite single stone 3.03ct diamond ring, with an I colour grade and SI2 clarity grade. It is a truly dazzling stone, near colourless, and it catches light beautifully. Estimated between £9,000 and £14,000, this ring would be the ideal gift to mark an engagement or special occasion. Both of these truly stunning and unique pieces will be offered for sale at the Fellows auction of Antique &

Country conservatories from Homestyle Lucinda Bunn
C
onservatories and orangeries have come a long way; in fact, they’ve had a complete revival. They’re no longer the room at the back you neglect in the winter. Instead Homestyle conservatories and orangeries are stylish rooms for all seasons; with built-in heating systems, sound systems and a space you can decorate as you wish. With decades of experience, the Homestyle team begin with a consultation. They’ll head out to your home and discuss your ideas, options and a budget quote. Next up is the architectural impression, outlining the design of your extension and putting your dream to paper. Homestyle works with some of the leading manufacturers in the conservatory industry, bringing you innovative designs and cutting edge technology. Think Ultraframe, Bereco, Deceuninck and Pilkington. If maintenance is a concern, all windows are self-cleaning and UV reflective. You can opt for timber, with a 30 year guarantee, aluminium in any colour or a PVC structure with a lifetime guarantee.
A conservatory or orangery can create light and space in your home. If you want a bigger dining room to entertain, a home office or a place to unwind and take in the garden, you’ll be amazed by the possibilities. From structure and performance to design and style, Homestyle has it covered.

10 Benefits of Buying New
There’s never been a better time to buy a new Bovis Home. If you’ve not considered buying a brand new property before, you’ll be amazed at the huge range of great benefits that will be waiting for you when you arrive. We round up some of the best reasons to make that modern move First through the door
Minimal maintenance
There’s nothing quite like moving into a pristine, new home that’s clean and untouched by previous hands. As the very first owner, a new Bovis Home gives you a completely fresh start so you can create your own style and begin a new life!
With a new Bovis Home, all the hard work is done for you. Your property will be newlydecorated and include a stylish fitted kitchen with integrated appliances – they’ll even wire them up for you and show you how they work! Buy a new home and you can wave goodbye to those DIY weekends and relax. Your 10-year industry warranty is backed up by a two-year Bovis Homes customer support service, which includes 24-hour, 365-day a year call-out cover for any emergencies.
More for your money A brand new Bovis Home comes with an ‘all inclusive’ specification, which means you get a contemporary new kitchen, integrated appliances, fitted wardrobes in many bedrooms and a number of other extras, all included in the price. And it’s not all about great specification – their independently rated five-star customer quality and service also comes as standard.
Rest assured Every Bovis Home has a 10-year ‘Buildmark’ warranty provided by the National House Building Council (NHBC), which covers any major defects to the structure of the property, or in its construction. Bovis Homes also include their own two-year warranty on the property, with a great customer care service, should any issues arise – giving you further peace of mind.
Energy efficient Thanks to modern standards of insulation and technology, new homes are now on average up to 60% more energy efficient than older houses. This means a new property could save you more than £500 a year on fuel costs* and is six times more effective in its CO2 emissions – so it’s helping reduce your carbon footprint.
Designs for life The layouts of Bovis Homes evolve to meet the changing needs and different lifestyles of their customers. Whether it’s open plan apartments, family living space, room for home working or the privacy of a master suite, a new Bovis Home can be contemporary, purpose-designed and built for specific needs.
A helping hand When buying a new property from Bovis Homes you can save thousands of pounds on your purchase. Their range of purchase assistance schemes varies from home to home and development to development, but can include anything from the shared equity scheme Help to Buy, the 95% mortgage called NewBuy, funding towards your legal fees and deposit, providing free carpets, liaising with your estate agent and paying their fees, or even buying your old property in part exchange.
A wealth of choice New Bovis Homes developments offer a wide range and choice of homes, from one and twobedroom apartments and coach houses, to threestorey living and spacious, detached family homes.
No chains attached Buying a new home straight from Bovis Homes can prove a much simpler process than buying a second-hand property. Your new home will be ready to move straight into with no worries over other owners moving out, delaying their completion dates, or pulling out of the sale altogether. And if you want a quick and simple way to sell your existing home, they could even buy that from you too through their Home Exchange scheme.
Quality comes first All Bovis Homes are built to exacting industry standards and undergo regular inspections by the National House Building Council to ensure quality of build. New homes generally also offer a higher degree of built-in security and safety than older properties. A new Bovis Home will include enhanced door locking, a security chain, window locks and mains powered smoke alarms (with battery backup), which are all fitted as standard. *A research study by National Energy Services, commissioned by the New Homes Marketing Board, found living in a new home could save up to £556 a year on average energy bills compared with older-style homes. Savings due to new homes generating more than 60% less CO2 emissions.

by 150 candidates world-wide. Local student Jagraj Bhandal was one of those who scored 44 having previously also achieved A* in both maths and further maths A Levels and an A in AS physics. Another local pupil, Sam Adamson, has successfully secured his place to read archaeology and social anthropology at Oxford.
romsgrove School is delighted with results at both A level and IB. At A level 177 pupils sat 544 A level examinations and 49 BTEC qualifications. 23% of all results were graded A*, 58% were graded A*/A and a superb 87% of all results were graded A* to B. The average UCAS tariff at A level was 442 which is equivalent to A*, A, A at A level with a further A grade in an AS level subject. Special mention goes to local boy Lewis Turner who achieved 4 A*s at A level and an A at AS level. Lewis has secured his place at the University of Birmingham to study medicine. Â
Peter Ruben, Second Deputy Headmaster Academic, said, “These wonderful results are a testament to the hard work of pupils and staff. We are all very proud of them.
At IB the average IB score was equivalent to 560 UCAS points, nominally equivalent to A*A*A*A* at A Level. Pupils exceeded predictions in virtually every subject and at every level. A quarter of the entry scored at least 40 points and four achieved 44 with one pupil, Constantin von Crailsheim scoring a perfect 45 – a feat only achieved

Small schools deliver big results
A
s the best performing girls’ school in Worcestershire*, Dodderhill School in Droitwich Spa is proof that small schools can deliver big results. Following the 2014 GCSEs, 100% of year 11 pupils secured five or more, including English, Maths and Science and an impressive 82% of grades were A*, A, or B. Over the past two years, over a third of girls achieved nine or more GCSEs at A* or A grade - a sure sign that small class sizes really do pay off.
At Dodderhill School in Droitwich, we believe that children can achieve anything, just as long as they have the support, nurturing and individual attention that every one of them deserves. That is perhaps why this is such a happy and friendly place for girls aged 0-16, and why our 2014 GCSE results have ranked Dodderhill as the best performing girls’ school in Worcestershire*. Proof that small schools can deliver big results.
What could your child achieve tomorrow? Visit www.dodderhill.co.uk or call 01905 778290.
Teachers are able to dedicate more time to each pupil, both academically and pastorally, ensuring that each girl gets the individual attention necessary, to help nurture her to be the best that she can be. Staff have a great rapport with the girls and understand their needs, from their friendship dynamics to their academic concerns. This has resulted in a focused support system that gives the level of care in the areas it is needed most. As an all girls’ school, Dodderhill gives girls the chance to have equal opportunities and be judged on their own merits. The girls are encouraged to discover their strengths for themselves and as a result, confidence is instilled, allowing them to strive for their dreams without fear of failure or boundaries. Although academic accomplishment on the whole is important, there is more to success than grades alone and Dodderhill School prides itself on measuring success on individual merit, rewarding personal achievements and effort to motivate each student to reach their own full potential. To learn more about how your daughter can benefit from an all-girls education from age 8 -16 visit www.dodderhill.co.uk. Dodderhill School also offers scholarships and bursaries. The music group spent the morning composing on keyboards and computers. They were then joined in the afternoon by OSH’s own sixth form students who rehearsed and inspired the group for a final performance to all the pupils at the end of the day. In drama, the group developed their improvisational skills and then having been given a rough scenario; the pupils improvised and devised their own scenes, which culminated in two small group performances. Old Swinford Hospital is renowned for its sporting success and excellent sports facilities and the pupils who opted for this discipline competed in a miniOlympics tournament and round robin rounders’ competition, Peter Jones said “On a delightful summer’s day, it was wonderful to see all the pupils working so well together, getting involved and enjoying taking part in all the different activities which were both challenging and enjoyable in equal measure. The Annual Science Challenge was a close fought competition, but the eventual winners were the Knoll School for the second year running.” Heath Lane Stourbridge DY8 1QX 01384 817300 www.oshsch.com

THE COMPUTING CURRICULUM The art driving a computer Brett Laniosh
I
n the world of school support, nothing stands still. Based on the number of requests I’m getting from schools, the current hot topic is computer programming. The new computing programme of study presents some very new challenges to teachers and is worrying many of them who have never done any programming before. Although the terminology may be unfamiliar (abstraction, debugging and algorithms give you a flavour) to younger teachers, those of us who may be a little more mature may be sensing déjà vu as we’ve actually been here before. Anyone who turned on their Sinclair ZX81 or BBC B computer last century would have been presented with a blank, black screen. That is what computers used to be like in days of yore. Believe it or not we used to have to buy a computer magazine and write our own programs. Note the spelling - it was at this time that the misspelling of programme came into general use and that is why program doesn’t have a red underline when you type it into your word processor.
64
So why is this ancient history relevant to today’s brave new world of computing in the curriculum? It WWis all down to the valuable lessons that those heady days of home computing taught us. Computers are actually very dumb and don’t do a single useful thing unless there is a clever human to tell it what to do. As computers have become more complex and wizzy we’ve lost something. We’ve forgotten the basics and spawned a generation who know how to use a computer but know nothing about how a computer works. The new computing curriculum that schools are now implementing comprises Information Technology (IT), Computer Science (CS) and Digital Literacy (DL). At this point in schools I draw upon my owning a car analogy. Using a computer to word process, surf the web, write emails or manipulate photos is like driving a car to work. We bought the car to do useful things for us in the same way we use computers in our daily
life. That equates to Information Technology (IT). Knowing the right way to use the computer such as not going to dodgy sites and keeping your antivirus up to date is like learning the rules of the road and being a safe driver. That is what is referred to as Digital Literacy (DL). The final part of the jigsaw that makes you complete and at one with the world is Computer Science (CS). In the world of driving it means you don’t break down because you forgot to fill the car with fuel, you don’t have an accident because you know your correct tyre pressures or you know what to do if your car doesn’t start in the morning. Forgetting the computer science bit is like forgetting to top up the oil in your car. It will eventually break down. Brett Laniosh works in schools where he promotes cloud technology and online safety. Follow him on Twitter @brettlaniosh, on LinkedIn or drop him an email edge@catshill. com

CHANGING THE WORLD FROM THE MIDLANDS Packtypes Transformational Play
Y
ou might be surprised to learn that some of the world’s most pioneering work in transforming selfawareness and self-esteem is being led from right here in the Midlands. Will and Annalese Murray created Packtypes back in 2006 and since then have been developing ‘Packtypes Transformational Play’ to achieve some amazing things. Packtypes is now used in over 1000 schools around the country to increase student attainment and quality of life. It is used by the police and NHS to impact every aspect of what they do, particularly with young people and has just been adopted by one of the world’s largest employers to empower all their managers. It is also at the centre of Be You a national campaign to empower one million women and girls by 2020. Packtypes is a uniquely playful card-based game that allows people to discover inner strengths and recognise and value differences in other people. Because it is play

based everyone can use it to become more self-aware. Self-awareness is the foundation of self-esteem which shapes people’s attitudes to themselves and others. A person’s attitude controls how they behave and their behaviour determines the outcome of their life. With Packtypes each person is equipped and empowered to take control of their own life and become the person they already have the talent inside to be. JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE Life and law, hand in hand Richard Hull
L
ife’s a journey. With endless twists and turns, ups and downs, challenges and triumphs, hopefully we’re all lucky enough to have friends and family by our sides to support us through our joys and our sorrows. But when you think about the key milestones in your life, you realise that you need a good solicitor by your side. At Thomas Horton LLP we cover all aspects of law, from residential house sales and purchases to commercial properties and leases, advising on Wills and divorces through to business law, charting our clients’ different journeys along the way. We fully understand the importance of offering individuals and businesses excellent legal advice and we appreciate the many different circumstances in your life to which this can apply.
Buying a house Many people haven’t dealt with a solicitor until they buy their first home – a key milestone in most people’s lives. It can be a stressful time so it’s essential to choose a specialist conveyancing solicitor to guide you through the web of paperwork, estate agents and structural surveys. Writing a Will Once you’ve purchased your new home, the biggest asset you’ve ever owned, you need to protect this by writing a Will or by adding it to a current Will, to ensure any equity is distributed according to your wishes should you pass away. Living together If you’re unmarried at this point, it’s also advisable to get a co-habitation agreement to ensure that you set out your and your partner’s wishes legally, as co-habiting partners don’t receive the same legal recognition as married couples. Getting married Once you’re married, things are a little simpler, but it’s still extremely important to set your wishes out formally in a legally binding document, such as a Will, so there is no room for any misinterpretation. Having children Once children come along, it’s essential to ensure that your Will is completely up-to-date and that
68
you have discussed and officially declared who would become their legal guardians in the event of your death. Whilst it’s not something you want to think about, it’s an extremely important decision to make for your own peace of mind and for the sake of your children. Your work life Whether you are an employee or run your own business, you will need legal help with any employment law matters. Businesses need legal support when starting up, expanding and, eventually, selling. And when issues inevitably arise, such as commercial disputes or debt collection, or if your business fails, then you will need the support and guidance of a good business lawyer. Losing a loved one It’s a traumatic and emotional time when a family member dies and those left behind not only have to deal with their grief, but often also need to manage the legal aspects relating to the distribution of their estate. An experienced Wills, Trusts and Probate Lawyer can ensure that the estate is administered in accordance with the Will and importantly that any taxes are properly paid and taken into account. Facing divorce It’s a sad fact that a large proportion of marriages end in divorce. Whilst some are straightforward, when children, large assets and sometimes joint businesses are involved then things can become complicated and
Richard Hull - Managing Partner at Thomas Horton
it’s essential to seek legal advice as early on in the process as possible. It’s a case of deciding how much input you need from a solicitor, but it’s always sensible to at least gain legal advice from a professional before making any decisions. Crime If you’ve been a victim of a crime, there are several reasons why you might need a solicitor. For example, if you intend to make a claim for compensation, and your claim is likely to be complex or for a large sum of money, then it may be costeffective for you to get advice from a solicitor. Equally, if you’ve been charged with committing a crime, such as a motoring offence, then you will need to engage the services of a criminal defence lawyer who will manage your case for you to get the best possible outcome they can. The law can be complicated so it's important to get the best advice that you can. Solicitors are the experts when it comes to the law and how it affects you so for legal advice that you can rely on, contact a trusted solicitor. But do the sacrifices you make to ensure you can continue to live safely with help on hand 24 hours a day outweigh the gains? The answer to this is a definitive no in the case of the vast majority of care homes across the UK but unfortunately, we do not always get to hear about the many benefits of living in a care home. Take High Habberley House near Bewdley for instance. A home from home where qualified health carers and nurses attend to your personal care and nursing requirements, but where you are also actively encouraged to continue to live as independently as your needs allow and where new friendships can be forged along the way. Whilst there is no getting away from the fact that moving into a care environment takes a lot of getting used to, it is also very true to say that there are also
70
opportunities and benefits, little reported, that make the transition so much easier. Sara Morrissey, General Manager of High Habberley House said, ‘We care for a variety of different needs in our home, some people just require a little support to maintain their independence, others have quite complex nursing needs. But caring for someone is so much more than looking after their physical needs. ‘Social engagement is a huge part of what we do each day. This could be sharing mealtimes together in the dining room, chatting about shared experiences or taking part in organised activities that range from tea dances to golf tournaments in the garden! But the thing I am most proud of is the fact that my team, from administration staff to nurses to kitchen assistants, all actively play a part in enriching the lives of our residents and making everyday life at High Habberley House enjoyable.’ High Habberley House Care Home Habberley Road, Kidderminster, Worcestershire, DY11 5RJ 01562 569 618

GO WALK
The health benefits of walking Mel Taffs
I
t’s a gentle, low impact form of exercise that’s easy, free and suitable for people of all ages and most abilities. Here’s why it’s so good for you...
Regular walking has been shown to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. It lowers levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol while increasing levels of HDL (good) cholesterol and keeps blood pressure in check. Anything that raises your heart rate and gets your blood pumping is a workout for your heart and circulatory system. Walking briskly for up to 30 minutes can help prevent and control the high blood pressure that causes strokes by 27%. It lowers disease risk…. As well as heart disease a walking habit can slash your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, asthma and some cancers. A study has shown that by taking more steps every day can help ward off diabetes for up to 60 percent. Those of us who are active have around a 20 per cent lower risk of developing cancer of the breast, colon and womb than those less active.
Keeps weight in check…. If you’re trying to lose weight you need to burn at least 600 calories a day more than you’re eating. Putting one foot in front of the other is one of the easiest ways to do that. A person weighing 60kg burns 75 calories simply by strolling at 2mph for 30 minutes, increase that to 3 mph and they will burn 99 calories. Walking also increases muscle mass and the more muscle you have the faster your metabolism, so even when resting you will burn more calories. Helps prevent dementia…. Dementia affects one in 14 people over 65 and one in six over 80. We know being active has a protective effect on brain function and regular exercise reduces dementia risk by up to 40 per cent. According to some studies older people that walked six miles or more per week could avoid brain shrinkage and so preserve their memory as the years pass.

It gives you energy.... It might seem like a paradox but walking is one of the best energizers around. It boosts circulation and increases oxygen supply to every cell in your body, helping you to feel more alert and alive. It wakes up stiff joints and eases muscle tension so that you feel less sluggish. It makes you happy.... The ability of exercise to boost your mood is undisputed. Studies have shown that regular moderate intensity exercise (such as brisk walking) to be as effective as anti-depressants in cases of mild to moderate depression. Getting active releases feel good endorphins into the bloodstream, reducing stress and anxiety and don’t forget that it can also be a social activity if you join a walking group or meet friends to walk and chat. Boosts vitamin D.... Whilst walking in daylight you will be boosting your body’s stores of vitamin D, a nutrient that is hard to get from food. Being exposed to sunlight will give you sufficient vitamin D, it’s very important as it plays a big part in boosting immunity and keeping bones strong.

GAME, SET, MATCH Leamington’s Tennis Trail
C
hampagne is flowing at Leamington Tennis Court Club following a successful bid to host the 2015 Ladies Real Tennis World Championships.
The last three Ladies World Championships were held in Paris, Melbourne and Newport, Rhode Island - so 'the bar' as they say, was high. "It's a coup for the Club - and a boost for the town." said Club Chairman Guy Stanton. "Leamington is the spiritual home of tennis: the world's oldest real and lawn tennis clubs are here - and it's the birthplace of the Renshaw twins, the best British tennis players you never heard of. Willie Renshaw took twelve Wimbledon titles; he had eight singles wins - seven of which were consecutive, an achievement which has never been bettered." Leamington's rich tennis heritage lent credibility and historical context but Stanton believes the quality of local restaurants, stores and attractions added substance. The club's fine Regency dining room and beautifullyappointed bar will have contributed too. Established in 1846, Leamington Tennis Court Club was for 160 years a gentleman's club with sports facilities. Replete with mahogany furnishings and original features, it's little wonder that Farrow and Ball chose it as a showcase. Since opening its doors to ladies in 2008, LTCC has
hosted the LRTA's annual Ladies Doubles competition - and World Champion Claire Fahey is an honorary life member. The precursor of lawn tennis, 'real' tennis, remains fundamentally unchanged from its medieval roots. Lawn tennis may have adopted tennis' scoring, but real tennis's handicap system delivers a close game despite disparities in ability: anticipation and strategic thinking can compensate for youthful athleticism - a characteristic which makes it rewarding for novice and older player alike. LTCC's Professionals run Tennis Academy sessions for players of both sexes, all ages and all abilities. SAYING GOODBYE Snow Ball set to glitter this winter Hannah Griffiths
N
o parent ever dreams about saying goodbye to their child at any stage of their life whether it’s during pregnancy, at birth or in infancy. But as hundreds of people suffer the loss of a child the Saying Goodbye charity provide services to help people acknowledge their loss and to remember their children. Saying Goodbye is a division of the Mariposa Trust- a leading national charity supporting people who have suffered the loss of a child at any stage of pregnancy, at birth or in infancy. It offers full support to parents who have lost a baby and holds national remembrance services at cathedrals across the UK. Furthermore, the charity has a number of other support divisions, ‘Growing You’ which supports people who are pregnant following loss, ‘Waiting for You’, which supports people who are going the adoption process and ‘Holding Hope’ that supports people who are undergoing fertility treatment. As a sign of recognition and to help raise vital funds for the charity Saying Goodbye Fundraisers will be holding a national set of Snow Balls across the country this November. The Stratford-upon-Avon Snow Ball is being organised by Jessica Smallwood. Jessica lives in Stratford with her husband and her two young daughters. It is being held on the 21st November 2014 at the Stratford Hotel and the evening will commence at 7:30pm and will consist of a luxury 3-course meal, auction, raffle and entertainment. Lucy Nicholls from PS Events and Prosingers productions is delighted to be supporting this local event. Jessica Smallwood, assistant fundraising manager for the charity said, ‘The Snow Ball is the perfect chance for friends and families, companies and organisations to have a wonderful night out, whilst enjoying great food and entertainment and
raising money for a worthy cause. The Stratford Hotel is the perfect venue and I have a wonderful group of friends helping me – Alison Liggins, Nicci Elston, Dottie Channing-Williams and Joanna Miles. Saying Goodbye is very close to my heart. Babyloss is still very much taboo and something that many people feel uncomfortable talking about. Raising awareness of the charity is facing this taboo head-on and helping people to acknowledge their losses. One of our twin daughters was tragically stillborn in December 2011 and Saying Goodbye has given me strength, hope and the courage to say our baby mattered’. Zoe Clark-Coates, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of the Trust with husband Andy added, ‘Baby loss is a huge issue. Hundreds of people are going through baby loss, every day in the UK; whether through miscarriage, stillbirth or loss in infancy. The taboo nature of baby loss means that often their loss is not discussed, their grief not addressed and their need for support not met and they can often feel ostracised. As a charity we are trying to combat this. We provide services that help people to acknowledge their loss and to remember their children whilst campaigning for changes in the support that people receive pre, during and post baby loss.’ Tickets are now available for the Snow Ball priced at £50 per person. BUD’S RUN Marathon Legend Paula Races In To Start Birmingham Charity Fun Run
M
arathon legend and TV star Paula Radcliffe will race into Birmingham this autumn to help raise money for Parkinson’s UK. She’s on a flying visit to start “Bud’s Run”, a family-friendly 5K at the University of Birmingham on Saturday 4th October.
“The course is traffic-free and loops round the main campus,” he continued. “There will also be a junior sprint track, barbecue, jazz band, stalls, and 1k loop for Parkinson’s sufferers. So whatever kind of runner you are, please come and join us for a great family day out.”
“Bud’s Run” is the idea of Bud Baldaro, the former UKA Marathon Event Coach who’s been based at the University for over ten years. During his forty year career, Bud’s helped and encouraged hundreds of distance and middle-distance runners of all ages and standards. Bud was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2009, and is keen to use his love of running to help fund research into this long-term condition.
Other famous guests include World Championships Silver Medallist Hannah England, who Bud coaches. University of Birmingham alumnus Hannah also ran the 1500m for England in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games earlier this year and is coached by Bud.
Paula was originally due to fly from her Monaco home directly to Edinburgh, where she is attending the Great Scottish run on Sunday 5th October. But when she heard about “Bud’s Run”, she was determined to stop off in Birmingham first - even though it means a quick dash to the airport straight afterwards. Paula said: “Bud is a special man who has always been so positive and supportive for as long as I have known him.” Bud said: “We’re so grateful to Paula for getting involved. She’s one of the finest British athletes of all time and is a true hero.”

Top steeplechaser Luke Gunn will give a light-hearted commentary on events. Luke’s married to Hannah, and joined her in the English team for Glasgow. He works in the University of Birmingham’s Hi Performance Centre. Although Bud has now stepped down from being their Head Coach, Bud continues to play an active mentoring role with University of Birmingham athletes. Zena Wooldridge, Director of Sport at the University of Birmingham, said: “Bud has been instrumental to the sustained athletics success of the University of Birmingham in national and international arenas, particularly in middle-distance. Bud’s reputation has attracted so many bright and talented students to study and train at Birmingham. His passion and expertise as coach and mentor has changed the lives of so many of those young people through their
www.edgemagazine.org athletics. We have a lot to thank Bud for, and we are delighted to be supporting his event in aid of Parkinson’s UK.” Sarah Wakeman, Regional Fundraiser at Parkinson’s UK, said “I’m really excited about the event. Our work is totally dependent on donations, and it is because of the generosity of the Baldaro family and the people of Birmingham that we can continue our work to find a cure and improve the quality of life for everybody affected by Parkinson’s. We look forward to lots of support on the day. ”

A GIRL SEVEN: A REVIEW
A novel by Hanna Jameson Mike Stafford
G
irl Seven is the second novel from Brighton’s Hanna Jameson, the literary starlet behind 2013’s Something You Are. A continuation of Jameson’s London Underground series, it introduces us to Kiyomi Ishida, AKA Seven, a British-Japanese cocktail waitress orphaned as the result of a brutal multiple murder. Haunted by the memory, Seven spends the book fighting to solve her parent’s murder, even if it means destroying those around her. Jameson writes thrillers that are dripping with the edgy, vicious kind of cool that was once the preserve of Tarantino films. Indeed, Girl Seven owes more than a little to Kill Bill (2003), even if compared to Seven, Uma Thurman looks positively cuddly as Beatrix Kiddo. Seven is damaged and despairing, lacking much of the confidence you might expect from a twenty-something sexpot, but she is also multi-talented and sly-witted. Moreover, despite reservations and the occasional surge of guilt, she doesn’t shrink from violence. She fits in well with the rest of the characters that populate the underground. To a man - or woman - they are noir-ish screw ups, often with more flaws than personality. Drinkers, drug abusers, criminals, they’re all coated in the filth of the underworld. There are no hearts of gold in this tale; in fact Seven is only really nominally the good guy. We’re introduced to her first, encouraged to understand her (and it’s a brutalising task), but if you judge morality by deeds rather than attitudes and circumstance, there’s little to suggest she’s the one we should be rooting for. In reality, this is all just as well, as while Girl Seven sits firmly within the crime genre, Jameson isn’t about locking horns with mystery-solving readers, Christie-style. Girl Seven is far more character and social study than it is whodunit?, so the plotting isn’t particularly intricate. Not for Jameson the twists and turns of the page turner - she favours opening up the leading character, first as victim, then as perpetrator, and increasingly as both at the same time. There is a very distinct cool to Jameson’s work; Londoncentric, 21st century, world-weary and more than a little hipsterish, her books can have you glancing over each shoulder worrying if you’re hip enough to read
78
them. Fortunately, as Jameson makes clear, the cool kids in school were all petrified inside as well, and it’s in the book’s more sensitive moments that Jameson really shines. In a book crammed with sex and violence, Seven’s interludes of fragility are all the more striking. She explores what can be the confused and conflicted existence of the mixed race child, the first flushes of developing sexuality, and the depressingly endless claims placed by men upon the bodies of women. Jameson is no slouch when it comes to the R-rated, but arguably her best work comes when the human side of her characters comes to the fore. Girl Seven has that enviable quality in writing - an extremely distinctive voice. Pick up a Hanna Jameson book and you get something you can’t quite find elsewhere; the bleak coolness, the unseen London, the good guys too weak and damaged for heroism. It’s the sound of a series that’s unlike any of its contemporaries. www.nudgemenow.com/contributor/mike-stafford

PROPAGANDA SWING We meet director Hamish Glen
T
his autumn marks the UK premiere of Peter Arnott’s gripping new drama, Propaganda Swing. Throwing a spotlight on the true story of ‘Charly and his Orchestra’, this brand new co-production with Nottingham Playhouse is a captivating tale of WWII intrigue, set against a backdrop of glitz, glamour and Big Band swagger. We caught up with Director, Hamish Glen to find out more about bringing this fascinating story to the stage. When did you first become aware of the script for Propaganda Swing and what inspired you to take on this project? I suppose it must have been about three years ago. I remember, I was talking to Peter Arnott about doing a new version of a classic story. It was at that point that he mentioned his idea for Propaganda Swing and instantly, it seemed to me like a
80
riveting story. We’re now into the fourth draft of the play so it’s taken us a while to get it into its current shape. It’s a project that’s been a long time in the making. Propaganda Swing has been described as ‘picking up’ where Kander and Ebb’s musical Cabaret left off. In what sense is this true? Propaganda Swing picks up from Cabaret, the Kander and Ebb musical in the sense that it’s set at in the immediate aftermath of the explosion of the Berlin jazz scene. During the late 1920s, Berlin was the biggest centre for Cabaret and jazz in Europe and the musical Cabaret ends just as that’s beginning to turn sour as the Nazi regime begins to take a grip on the politics of the day. The Nazis relationship to jazz was a fascinating one. In one sense, they saw it as a degenerate, Western art form but on the other hand, they understood its power as a medium
of light entertainment and it’s that conflict that lies at the heart of the play. The play takes its inspiration from a series of real-life propaganda broadcasts which ran weekly throughout the late 1930s and early 40s. What attracted you to the story of ‘Charly and His Orchestra’ and why do you think this story deserves to be told? It’s just an incredibly fascinating story - the story of a group of jazz musicians who had been closed down, weren’t able to play the music they adored who were picked up by the propaganda ministry and put into Lord Haw-Haw’s propaganda broadcasts. Under the supervision of the Nazi Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, what these musicians eventually ended up doing was re-writing the lyrics to some of the most popular jazz standards of the day into vicious,
www.edgemagazine.org anti-semitic diatribes which were then put out on air to these popular tunes. What’s also interesting is that it was only by being involved in these broadcasts that the band was able to pick up new music, to travel across Europe, to access these otherwise ‘outlawed’ forms of entertainment. So, whilst in one sense the piece explores the compromises of artists operating under in an oppressive political climate, what it’s also saying is that, ultimately, it was music that won through. We understand that this production features a cast of actormusicians. What role does music play in the staging of this production and what, as a Director, are the particular challenges of working with actors who are also trained musicians? For this particular production, I need a company of actor/ musicians who all need to be of a certain standard. Anyone who knows a little about the jazz of this period will appreciate that this piece features some really intricate music and music really is at the heart of the production. To be honest with you, I’ve never really worked with a company of actor/musicians before so I’m not entirely sure what lies ahead of me but what I do know is that I need actors who can play clarinet, trombone, trumpet, strings – all sorts! What’s also clear from the onset is that considerable amounts of the rehearsal period are going to have to be put aside to learn the songs and play the jazz. That’s where my very talented Musical Director, Hilary Brooks comes in. What exciting production elements can we expect to see in Propaganda Swing? The main objective for me is to produce a spectacular piece of theatre. There’s a live jazz band playing some of the greatest music of the era. And despite the darkness of the story, there’s a great deal of humour in this piece too. You have to let fresh air into a subject like this otherwise it makes for a very dismal evening. The play takes place in a 1930’s radio studio and the show never leaves that studio. As a director, I really want to celebrate that conceit and use the theatricality inherent in that setting to best effect. The costumes and set design for the show, created by Libby Watson, all draw heavily from the Art Deco style and each element of the studio space including bandstands, microphones and period-booths have been designed with that context in mind. We’ve had some initial versions of the set design through from Libby with a preview of the final model box on its way. The whole thing is shaping up to be something really special. It’s really my hope to be able to offer audiences a new perspective on this well-documented period in history and to tell this really incredible true story through the power of live music. Propaganda Swing plays on the Belgrade Main Stage from Sat 13th – Sat 27th September. PEOPLE OF INDIA Photographs by Jason Scott Tilley
Herbert Art Gallery and Museum - September 2014 to 11th January 2015
P
eople of India is an extraordinary photographic odyssey that plots both a historic record of colonial and post-empire India, and a personal journal viewed through one man’s own photographic images and the camera of his late grandfather. This photography exhibition is set to open at Coventry’s Herbert Art Gallery & Museum in September 2014.
82
It contrasts the contemporary work (1999 – 2009) of former Coventry Telegraph photographer Jason Scott Tilley with that of his grandfather, Anglo Indian press photographer Bert Scott, whose earlier 20th Century work for The Times of India and the Indian Army, documented dramatic changes leading up to partition in the late 1940s, before he was uprooted and settled in the UK.
Their work is further juxtaposed with images from the seminal 19th century photographic collection The People of India which is on loan for the exhibition from the Library of Birmingham, who have also supported Tilley’s 10 year project. The origins of this study, published between 1868 and 1875, lay in the British government’s desire to create a visual record of ‘typical’ physical attributes and characteristics of
www.edgemagazine.org Indian people: a reference work to assist them in understanding and then controlling the Indian population under British rule. In putting the exhibition together, Tilley has also been exploring a remarkable personal link to this collection - that a distant relative, the Reverend E Godfrey, was one of the photographers who contributed to The People of India. Tilley’s black and white studies document a personal journey through India, made possible by travel grants from Arts Council England. His cultural explorations, often re-tracing his grandfather’s footsteps, are presented through a series of portraits of the people he met, befriended and often reencountered over a decade travelling through the urban and rural landscapes of India. Tilley says, “These sometimes very brief encounters, or in many cases, re-encounters with people I had known for a number of years, were made with very little direction from me. I simply sought to capture an essence of their spirit as I found them.” “My grandfather’s photographs and my own are very candid and show people as individuals and, more
importantly, themselves whereas the 19th century images are stilted, two dimensional images trying to depict Indian ‘types’. It was an exercise in control as reflective of that era.” “I am also trying to find out more about my distant ancestor who was involved in putting together this extraordinary, yet typical of its time, collection.” Tilley began his photographic career in 1987 as a staff photographer at the Coventry Citizen, going on to work for the Coventry Evening Telegraph, Birmingham Post and Mail, and a wide range of national newspapers and magazines, before embarking on this decade-long project. His journey was inspired by an archive of family photographs taken by his Anglo-Indian grandfather, Bert Scott. Scott worked as a press photographer for The Times of India newspaper from 1936 to 1940 and then as head of the Indian Army’s photographic unit in Burma during the Second World War. These roles gave him unique access to record a defining moment in British-Indian history, including the very last days of the Raj. Scott’s press, family, social and army photographs bear witness to everyday and official life in India up to the point when, risking their
lives travelling through the violence of Partition, his family left India in 1947 carrying their precious family photographs with them. John Falconer, Curator of Photographs at the British Library, said of Tilley’s work: “Within a tradition of humane and engaged portrait photography, Jason Scott Tilley has evolved a distinctive and impressive personal style, engaging with his subjects in a manner which is uncompromising, unpatronising and often humorous. His work is also intriguingly situated within the larger historical narrative of Indian photography, explicitly inviting comparison with the 19th century attempt to record and tabulate the ethnic variety of the subcontinent, which saw publication in The People of India (1868-75), and also with the photographs of his own grandfather in the 20thcentury.” Admission to the exhibition is free of charge. Find out more at www.theherbert.org. This exhibition is a partnership between the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Jason Tilley and the Library of Birmingham.
