EDITOR’S BIT Welcome to the June edition of Edge Magazine. The three counties are thriving again with awesome events, exciting exhibitions and new business ventures. With each edition of Edge Magazine, we’ve learnt that independent is better and that’s why we strive to support local businesses in everything we do. Our ethical fashion article brings the best of Birmingham together for a photo shoot at The Custard Factory, Todd from Warwick TweetUp talks us through his local shopping challenge and as always, we have local food news stories in The Local Kitchen. Still haven’t found a gift for Father’s Day? Well, your dad will love the ideas we have for experience days, courses and events, whatever his interests. And with the fantastic sports car hire packages from Revival Cars at Wroxall Abbey, you can really show your dad how special he is. Our tour of the Heart of England galleries stops at The New Art Gallery, Walsall this month. The wild and wonderful exhibition The Nature of the Beast is set to showcase our obsession with nature; our need to understand and manipulate it. We met Tessa Farmer, one of the artists ahead of the exhibition to get her thoughts on creatures and their evolving narrative.

WISH 4 BEAUTY The essential secrets of skincare Lucinda Bunn

Sensitive skin will love.....the rebalancing range.

Forget the idea that facial oils make your skin greasy. The Wish 4 Beauty Rebalancing Treatment Oil is lightly soothing combining apricot kernel oil with an exclusive blend of the finest quality pure essential oils; it’s easily absorbed so it’ll calm and balance whilst hydrating your skin and unifying your complexion.

Your summer essentials are.....the Cellulite Treatment Oil and the Organic Rose Petal Toning Mist. With an active blend of grapefruit and lavender essential oils combined with starflower oil, the Cellulite Treatment Oil firms the skin and reduces the appearance of cellulite. Feeling flushed? The exquisite Toning Mist will refresh and hydrate your skin and leave you feeling cool. Enjoy treating your skin again with Wish 4 Beauty. Your summer routine doesn’t need to be a chore; don’t chase exfoliating beads around your face or go to bed with caked on layers of cream. With Wish 4 Beauty, the creams absorb and the exfoliators moisturise. Your skin will be glowing, the natural way. That’s just the power of essential oils.

E

very now and then a beauty product launches that is totally different to anything else out there. Wish 4 Beauty’s range is one of those. Not just because the range ticks the boxes; natural ingredients, products for all skin types and created in Worcestershire, but because the luxurious skincare range is enriched with the finest pure essential oils. Now, that’s no coincidence. Founders Julie, Alison and Debbie are aromatherapy experts, so they’ve created their skincare range on the therapeutic potential of essential oils and plant extracts. Everyone is drawn to different aromas, each of which can alter your mood, cognitive function and health so the Wish 4 Beauty products not only care for your skin, they achieve wellbeing too. Already a favourite with Hilton Hotel Spas, the Wish 4 Beauty range is an allnatural feast for your skin.

You must try.....the Exfoliation Treatment. This is what started it all. There are two different exfoliators; one is refreshing and invigorating with lemongrass and frankincense, the other is enriching and calming with bergamot, geranium and rosewood. Decide which one suits you and let the sea salt and almond oil do the work for you. Turn back time with.....the regenerating range

with its opulent Night Cream with added benefits of evening primrose and rosehip oils and the Two Stage Regenerating Facial Treatment which refines and intensely nourishes your skin.

Created in Worcestershire, Wish 4 Beauty’s all-natural skincare range is made with wellbeing in mind. Harness the power of pure essential oils with Wish 4 Beauty.

JUICE THERAPY The roots of wheatgrass Melanie Taffs

O

ne of the most popular new super drinks of the 21st century is wheatgrass. But green shoots have been causing a stir for centuries. The famous Swiss Dr Bircher-Benner was using powerful green juices as far back as the 16th century, when they were used to help treat all kinds of diseases. In more recent years, wheatgrass has become a super healthy indulgence of Hollywood health gurus and to be fair, of all the green juices on earth, wheatgrass is the most nutritionally powerful. But is it worth the hype?

put it kindly) and it’s expensive. Perhaps the answer really is to grow it yourself or take it as a once in a while health kick. But eating vegetables is always a good thing so up your intake of any veggies and you’ll experience the health benefits.

What is in Wheatgrass? Wheatgrass is a type of young grass in the wheat family that is sold in a variety of forms as a dietary supplement. Research has found that it has numerous health benefits; it contains nutrients such as iron, calcium, magnesium, amino acids, chlorophyll and vitamins A, C and E. Wheatgrass juice is also one of the richest sources of chlorophyll on earth. Chlorophyll is concentrated sunshine or liquid sunshine-it’s the natural sunlight energy trapped within the fibres of the plant. When you separate the fibres to make juice, you effectively release that energy. Health Claims Like all super foods, wheatgrass has a long list of health and anti-ageing claims. Here are a few: • It improves digestion and increases energy • It prevents illnesses like cancer, anaemia, diabetes, constipation. • It treats skin conditions, cleanses the colon and helps with joint pain. • And apparently an ounce of wheatgrass contains the equivalent of 1 pound of fresh green vegetables Growing Wheatgrass Lots of wheatgrass fans grow it themselves. It takes about 2 weeks from planting to harvest time, it can then be put in a blender and added to smoothies or juice. If you don’t want to grow it yourself you can buy it in powder form or in capsule form from any health store. Is it worth the hype? Well, it isn’t just a fad, there is something truly wonderful about wheatgrass. Some people will even experience a natural high – something similar to a caffeine hit but without the negative side effects. However, it’s usually served in a shot because it doesn’t taste that great (to

ASK THE EXPERTS Invasive vs non-invasive Dr Claire Oliver

F

or many people, getting rid of excess fat can be a lifelong battle. Pockets of fat can be difficult to reduce and sometimes diet and exercise are not enough to make a noticeable difference. Whilst those looking at cosmetic enhancement may want to tighten, tone and firm certain parts of their bodies, not all patients can face the scalpel. Dr Claire Oliver (BDS) at Air Aesthetics, Henley-in-Arden, explains, ‘the choices are simple’.

‘Invasive surgery is not something to be taken lightly given that there can be complications. Pain is a significant drawback to plastic surgery and recovery times can be as long as six months in some cases. There’s the anaesthesia to worry about, the cost to contend with and the aftercare of the wounds to consider’.

Dr Claire Oliver

Dr Oliver says, ‘fat cells are by nature very different to other cells, particularly in how they respond to stimuli such as temperature. Most of the new technologies recently introduced for fat removal were developed on the basis of this knowledge and, as a result, these procedures target specific areas of body fat using energy delivered as either heating or freezing’.

But more and more aesthetic professionals are finding that the introduction of fat removal technologies is opening the door for more people who are not candidates for invasive liposuction surgery.

‘The non-invasive option guarantees minimal downtime, no needle, no scars, no scalpel. Most procedures are virtually pain free; they’re quick, easy and safe. And they still deliver permanent results’.

Dr Oliver answers our readers' questions: I’m a mother of three and I’m ready to focus on me again. I’m a healthy size 12 but I’ve never been able to shift my wobbly tummy. How could Coolsculpting make a difference to me?

I’m a fitness fanatic and I love the gym. I eat really healthily but there are still areas I’m unable to tone. Can Coolsculpting help me reduce my lovehandles?

- Post-baby belly, Chipping Campden

- Gym bunny, Bromsgrove

Post pregnancy paunch is very common. CoolSculpting precisely targets stubborn fat and the fat cells in turn, are naturally absorbed and removed by the body. Dependent on your tummy area, a single treatment takes one hour and can reduce your tummy by up to 40% for good. MAKE A STATEMENT Aesthetics, Midlands Hairdresser of the Year

Mimi Bowron

H

aving just presented our S/S 2013 trends on stage at Pro Hair, we thought you might like our forecast for what’s trending on the catwalks.

Ombre The ombre hype hasn’t died down but it has been perfected and the art of summer dip-dyes needs to be oh-so-subtle. Stunning golden bronzes and soft mocha tones will help achieve a seamless blend into highlighted ends, with clever multi-tonal lights framing the face from underneath for a not too ‘done’ finish. Celebrities that have rocked this colour magic include Amber Le Bon, Glee’s Lea Michele and most recently, Amanda Holden. Glossing Glossing or toning is huge this summer, whether you’re blonde or brunette, it’s all about seamless

20

colouring, glossy finishes or pastel iridescence. All of this can be achieved with toners cleverly used in the colour application. Colouring at Aesthetics is becoming more multi-layered and bespoke; we’re embracing a culture towards continually moving colour on at each appointment. Extensions Great lengths 100% human hair extensions, now available at Aesthetics, bond to hair using cold fusion technology. Removing heat from the application process limits the damage that traditional bonds can often cause, leaving behind only beautifully soft, natural-looking hair. We’re increasingly finding that hair extensions make a big difference to those of us with fine hair to create volume and body. In this case the extensions are applied very finely to prevent tension on delicate hair and the results are stunning.

www.edgemagazine.org

The undone blow-dry Taking inspiration from the grunge fashion of the ‘90s, blow-dries are now looking undone whilst still remaining effortless and beautiful. Think slightly ruffled, catwalk hair rather than Courtney Love’s messy locks. To achieve this look, blow dry upside down to keep natural movement, whilst enhancing root lift, then bristle brush each section, keeping roots smooth. Layering different products gives clean hair a grungy matte texture, whilst keeping it light. Airbrushed grunge Blondes should dare to wear pastel colours by reversing the classic dip-dye with sugared almond hues. Lavender, cotton candy and turquoise are our favourites. For brunettes, we’ve been using a petrol peacock palette; emerald, aubergine and raspberry look stunning and very Azealia Banks. Gatsby, what Gatsby? Thanks to Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of the classic The Great Gatsby, the iconic images of the Jazz Age have swept over the fashion world like a Charleston dancer. Aesthetics’ 2012 British Hairdressing Award

winning collection paid homage to the film with our own creations of the characters Daisy and Jordan. For those with short hair, don a cute cropped bob like Daisy Buchanan, or for a more daring chop, mirror Jordan’s geometric cut in a darker tone. Up-dos The best up-dos always start with a great blow-dry and multi-layered products. This season sees the 90’s influence again with natural, slightly imperfect twists and Boudicca braids. Low buns with hair barely pinned back are also popular and really easy to achieve, especially if you’ve done the ground work, a few pins, a bit of organised chaos and you’ve got a great look for day-old hair.

THE PERFECT GETAWAY Plan and pack smart Meg Hanlon

H

ave you ever been away on holiday and then brought half of your clothes back unworn? It does seem a bit of a waste of energy doesn’t it? Plus, think of the exotic goodies you could’ve brought back in that space instead. I love the planning and build up to going on holiday, right down to choosing the right book to read, which you may be surprised to learn, doesn’t have to match my outfit so much as matching my destination. Incidentally, The Saffron Gate by Linda Holeman is the perfect literary accessory if you’re ever travelling to Morocco and enjoy a little romantic escapism.

22

But back to the planning, my favourite challenge on a short break is to take everything I need in just my hand luggage. Successful minimal packing is an art-form but it is achievable with a little planning and there is a certain smugness to be enjoyed when striding past the crowds waiting at the baggage carousel and getting a head start on your holiday. The first thing I do, which won’t surprise many people, is decide on my colour scheme. I do get some stick for it from my family but it makes putting outfits together so much easier. I also make sure that every item I pack is multipurpose. The core items are all in neutral shades like stone and white which will keep me cool and co-

www.edgemagazine.org ordinated. Provided there aren’t too many chocolateyfingered children around, white jeans are a perfect staple item that work equally well for daytime and evening. Wearing those to travel, plus a pair of shorts, a long cotton skirt and a pair of crops stashed away in your bag will mean all your basics are covered. Then it’s time to add the accents, colours that is, not speaking like zees, although you can do that too if it gets you in the holiday spirit. Even if it’s looking a little grey outside, hopefully your destination will be somewhat sunnier so it’s worth going for brighter tones. Jewel colours like aqua, emerald and turquoise will suit most people and give you an instant boost. You’ll need three or four tops, including a strapless one if you can, and a silk one for evening, plus a co-ordinating cardigan and lightweight jacket. It’s always worth having a pashmina with you too in case it cools down in the evening, the air conditioning kicks in or you need a cultural cover up. A shirt-dress is another useful piece that can be worn in different ways. Finally, you’ll need some accessories to pull it all together. Sandals, flip-flops and ballet pumps will probably be the most comfortable options and if they have some sparkle on then they’ll work day to night. If you can’t go without heels then wedges are the best choice, again worn for travelling as they take up too much packing space. A small cross body bag for your purse, camera and sunglasses is useful to slip into the top of your hand luggage plus a sunhat and some colourful costume jewellery. Just add swimwear and undies and you’re done. Of course check the weather forecast before you go and adapt accordingly but avoid the temptation of taking any ‘just in case’ items - they’re the ones that’ll come home unworn and feeling left out. Now, all you need to do is choose a good book and look forward to relaxing on the sun-lounger, looking fabulous.

WHITE LIGHT

Summer style gets pale and interesting Lucinda Bunn

A

s the poster child for pale and (sometimes) interesting, I was excited to see this photo shoot from Angela Prottey-Jones; stylist, art director and Birmingham Institute of Art and Design alumnus. This summer, the fashion rails will be awash with whites. But Angela’s shoot proves that white can be dark. To nail this trend, find modern, clean tailoring and go wild with accessories. White leather is also here to stay this summer, with one warning: no fake tan. You can turn the ethereal whites on their head and instead, find the edgy alternative with boyish silhouettes and high volume hair styles. Don’t be hell-bent on playing down your dark side, as Angela’s shoot shows, only the ethics of your clothing need be angelic. Ethical fashion gets a bad rep. It’s not all hemp bras and itchy skirts you know. Ethical has many guises; shopping vintage is a great way to keep your conscience clean or you could try re-using, restyling and customising the stuff at the back of your wardrobe. At the very least, you could vow to invest in quality items less often and trash your throwaway fashion faux pas. And if that’s not for you, being responsible about where you buy your clothes is really important. There are retailers out there with ethical policies, using sustainable fabrics and reducing their carbon footprints; you just need to find them.

24

Angela ensured that even the make-up used on model Adele Bailey is from ethical brand Illamasqua. The cosmetics company taking the world by storm do no animal testing and they don’t use animal hair in their make-up brushes either, challenging the conventions of the industry for the greater good. Angela mixed and matched items from new, high fashion stores with items from vintage stores, ethical brands and from existing pieces in her own collection. These included: Burbo K’Ture, Bolongaro Trevor, COW Vintage and Komodo. She also used some stunning accessories made from 100% upcycled waste fabric, which can be found at Get Clobbered. Upon choosing the location, Angela knew she had to stay true to the city and it was The Custard Factory which seemed the obvious choice as Birmingham’s innovative arts quarter. So work the white hot look this summer, just remember to stay cool and always keep it ethical. www.angelaprotteyjones.weebly.com www.getclobbered.co.uk

ESCAPE THE CHAINS Artifex Lucinda Bunn

T

he Mitchell Centre in Sutton Coldfield has a vibrant art scene, showcasing the very best in contemporary British arts and crafts. At its core is Artifex, the independent gallery for jewellery, glass, ceramics, original paintings, sculpture and bespoke furniture. The gallery is known for promoting and artistically supporting British makers and artists with over 800 talented designers and artists displayed in Artifex’s contemporary space. The jewellery showroom specialises in one-of-a-kind pieces. Naomi Shepherd combines traditional and contemporary techniques using a method of cold metal joining, which allows the notion of movement to feature heavily, whilst Angie Young’s impressive coloured stone rings on vintage-inspired settings are striking and ornamental. These pieces are just some of the exquisite collections at Artifex. So if you’re thinking of graduation presents or anniversary gifts, find a unique piece of jewellery worth celebrating.

The ceramic route will take you through a studio space dedicated to the creative tradition of pottery. Britain’s relationship with studio pottery is a long-standing one and the display at Artifex is testament to that. The flamboyance of Julia Roxburgh’s baroque-style teapots and vibrant sugar bowls contrast with the crystalline glazes of Matt Horne’s vessels, showcasing the breadth of style. All the ceramics at Artifex are made in Britain and each item brings together art and purpose. Step inside the furniture showroom and you’ll find an extensive collection of bespoke furniture from some of the country’s finest contemporary British designer furniture makers. A personal commissioning service is available, with an exclusive range of maker-portfolios to help you realise your own unique custom made furniture, whether it be a single one-off item or a bespoke designer furniture suite. Artifex will breathe new life into your interiors. The entire upper floor gallery is devoted to paintings, all original artworks, featuring the work of around 18 artists. Each month a selected artist or maker has their own solo exhibition, providing a fantastic opportunity for British artists to showcase their work. Independent gallery-goer or not, you’ll love Artifex. The Mitchell Centre Weeford Road Sutton Coldfield B75 6NA 0121 323 3776 www.artifex.co.uk

MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME Protect your pets and properties Lucinda Bunn

W

hen you’re planning to become a pet owner, one of the last things you’re wondering is ‘who’s going to take care of the dog when we’re on holiday?’. That’s probably because you’re thinking about the price of kibble per tonne and whether your house has enough ‘play space’ between the fancy furniture. A lot less thought goes into the holidaying dilemma because you only have to cross that bridge once in a while. But when you do, which way do you turn? A new trend of global house-sitting services means every home and pet owner can get access to hundreds of sitters, ready and willing to do the job for little or nothing in exchange. Most often sitters just want a change of scenery and are happy with the free accommodation. It’s win win. Finding pet sitters the old fashioned way can be costly and it’s a big ask for friends and family who may have their own pets and commitments. What you really need is a live-in sitter, someone who’s free to dedicate their time to caring for your pets as you would. And that’s where Trustedhousesitters.com comes in. All you need to do is create your secure listing which will then be sent to all registered members looking to house sit in your area. You can review the profiles

of those interested, get in touch and see how you go. There are some fantastic profiles on the site, most of which have references and will usually have previous house/pet sitting experience. Registered sitters and homeowners can contact each other securely via the website if they are interested in a match. If you want to communicate further, you could get to know each other via Skype. You’re advised to double-check your chosen sitter’s references and ask for a copy of their passport. You should also check with your home insurer that your policy will remain valid while the sitter is staying there. It is not compulsory for house sitters to have a police check but Trustedhousesitters.com offer the facility for members to say if they have had a police check or not and to request third party references. It is then up to the homeowner if they want to search for these sitters. The website also has Trustedhousesitters.com homeowner references. If a house sitter has carried out a house sit via the website, then the registered homeowner will leave a reference for them on their profile. They’ll get a rating based on their experiences. Trustedhousesitters.com is the perfect solution to the worry of leaving your property unoccupied. You can

31

EdgeMagazine avoid the hassle and expense of uprooting your animals. Veterinary experts say that pets that stay at home while you are away are happier and less stressed. In fact, in going with Trustedhousesitters.com you’ll achieve the least disruption and your sitter can continue your daily routine to keep your pets at peace. On the flip side, if you love pets then you might also enjoy being a house sitter and living like a local for your next holiday. With homeowners registered in over 50 countries there’s lots of great travel opportunities - from a renovated farmhouse in the South of France to a beach house in Hawaii. Rita and Phil Palmer from the Midlands have enjoyed house sitting in the UK and abroad, ‘we’ve now been house sitting in Cornwall, Wales, Boston and the next stop is Australia. Our favourite sit so far was a thatched cottage by the sea where we looked after a cute cat. When we started, the benefit was the inexpensive holiday but we’ve soon come to realise that the pets provide so much enjoyment. I recommend anyone thinking about it to get a profile and just go for it’. Homeowners in Worcestershire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands are already taking advantage of finding a free pet sitter this summer with Trustedhousesitters. com.

ADOPTION Making it happen Hannah Griffiths

A

doption isn’t just about providing a home for a child; it’s so much more than that. Adoption is a way of providing a new permanent family for children who, for whatever reason, cannot live with their birth parents. Adopting can be very rewarding for families who are keen to become parents.

Research by the Association of Directors of Children’s Services (ADCS) shows that between March 2012 and March 2013 the number of children placed with adoptive families rose by 43%. With numbers increasing, prospective adoptive families can benefit further from Adoption Focus’ excellent levels of service and support.

Local charity Adoption Focus finds the children who need to be adopted and works with their social worker to make the placement happen.

Adoption Focus knows how important it is to be prepared when adopting and they want to help share this knowledge and educate those considering adoption. To make sure that this happens, they are carrying out a number of Preparation Groups that will inform and prepare prospective adopters throughout the Midlands and into Oxfordshire. The preparation group is a significant step on the journey through the adoption process. They are designed to provide prospective adopters with an introduction to what adoption is all about, and helps them to think about the way in which they will parent their adopted children.

Adoption Focus focusses on the support and preparation of the adoptive parents and the placement of children. Through Adoption Focus expertise, adopters feel valued and cared for from the beginning to the end, as the charity continues to support the families in postadoption. The organisation works with social workers across Birmingham, Staffordshire, Oxfordshire to find homes for children in care. The charity specialises in finding homes and families for children who are hard to place. These children are often over 5 years old, children with additional and special needs and children from ethnic minority communities.

The first part of the adoption preparation process starts when a prospective adopter decides that they wish to proceed with their interest in adoption, and they are invited to attend Preparation Groups. During this period, Adoption Focus takes up references, and the prospective

35

EdgeMagazine adopters have a medical with their GP. After they make their formal application to be assessed, they will also attend further training events. Adoption is not to be taken lightly and changes lives forever so it is important that adopters are aware of both the positives and negatives in order to decide whether adoption is the right choice for them. Anna Sharkey, Chief Executive Officer of Adoption focus explained that ‘it is important that people learn about adoption thoroughly before embarking on the life changing journey’. ‘Being an adoptive parent is a life-long learning experience and the preparation groups are only the start. You have to be sure that adopting is right for you and through these groups, your family adventure begins’. Children of all ages, from a range of backgrounds need placements, so it is important that people are aware of the sometimes complex nature of a child’s situation before agreeing to adoption. Through the preparation groups, prospective adopters have the opportunity to learn about the children and the reasons why they need adoptive families - including the effects of abuse, the impact of disadvantage and discrimination, child development, children’s behaviour and how children can be helped to understand their own family history. The inspiring and informative preparation process allows people to reflect on the ways they can make a difference to the lives of the children by becoming parents through adoption. In 2012-2013 alone Adoption Focus found adoptive homes for 30 children. There are children waiting in every authority, a total of 3884 and adopters waiting in nearly every authority that responded to the data collection. Adoption Focus works with children referred by Local Authorities throughout the country and its social workers and prospective families to successfully place 30 of the area’s children in need. OHMS

Lawn mowing logic Lucinda Bunn

T

here’s no ‘one mower fits all’ solution to your gardening dilemmas. You have to choose the right mower for your plot, your physique and the quality and the quantity of your grass. There’s a great range out there but it can be difficult to get sound advice considering the technical elements of these impressive machines.

you can control the pace. You’ll find equipment from the best manufacturers at OHMS; from AL-KO, ATCO, Hayter, Husqvarna, Masport, Snapper and Tanaka. Mowing the lawn used to be a summer chore few were happy to do but with OHMS’ help, you’ll find an efficient mower that does the job far easier and more efficiently than ever before.

OHMS in Pershore has been providing such advice for 20 years with their experience and background knowledge. So often lawnmowers are mis-sold and many of OHMS’ customers go to them after a bad experience. Some OHMS customers have previously bought unnecessary ride-on mowers; others have gone with cheaper options and found that their mowers failed within weeks from a poor buying decision elsewhere. If you’ve gone for a machine because the price was right, it’s not necessarily the right machine for you. OHMS will come out to your home, assess the garden’s lawns and suggest a better piece of equipment for you at different price points. Once the right machine has been selected and agreed upon, they’ll even bring the new mower to you and prove it’s the right selection for your lawn.

With their expertise and call-out service, OHMS are a cut above the rest. Whether it’s a maintenance service, repairs you need, parts to order or advice on the new garden machinery, OHMS has made it their mission to provide an honest service, giving you options and advice you can trust.

The technology’s changed when it comes to lawnmowers. Whilst the mechanical principles remain the same, every brand has made each mower easy to use. Easy start systems are now available so they start up straight away and there are models with different driving speeds so

WINE EXPLORATION Find your sense of adventure Phil Innes

O

ne of the things I find most interesting about wine is the exploration of new regions, grape varieties and new flavours. But the general pattern of wine drinking in the UK is quite limited. Traditionalists tend to just look towards Bordeaux and Burgundy and the supermarkets seem to plug the same wines packaged in different ways, with endless rows of Aussie Shiraz, Italian Pinot Grigio, or New Zealand Sauvignon; each one as soulless as the next. It’s not about pedalling the out-dated egotistical slant of the wine industry with its superiority complex. I would rather appeal to your sense of adventure. My first area of interest is the white wines of northwest Spain. These winemakers are casting aside the traditional Spanish ways of making wine, disregarding the use of oak which was seen as a staple, and making wines that are fresh, modern and vibrant, using indigenous varietals rather than trying to make ‘new world’ international style wine. These wines are all fresh and fruity, perfect summertime wines and wines made with seafood in mind. Another area that I don’t feel gets enough attention is Southern Italy. The good wines from the south are

less ‘clean’ than the famous wines in the north of the country, this is not to say the wines are ‘unclean’, they just have a rustic charm that is a reflection of the landscape and the realities of living in the south. In particular try Aglianico (usually from Campania). This wine at its best is brooding and intense with wonderful mocha-chocolate notes. I highly recommend Nero di Troia from Puglia; this wine packs a punch but is so rewarding. Negroamaro is another varietal where the good producers create wonderful soft wines with a bucket load of character. Last but not least, check out areas such as Calabria and especially the Gaglioppo red grape which is light in the glass but can pack a fair amount of fruit and intensity.

CURRANT THINKING Preserve the season Hilary Collins

I

t’s all about ‘superfoods’: a 21st century nutrition revolution. Supplement your diet with Açaí and Goji berries ...or should you? Nutritionists say these little berries are rich in antioxidants and vitamins but research indicates that the health benefits remain scientifically unconfirmed. Global demand for the central and South American Açaí Palm fruit has produced a huge, destructive agribusiness, endangering rainforest and the habitat of indigenous people, not to mention the airmiles clocked up transporting the highly processed pulp and lifeless dried fruits with negligible vitamin C.

ornamental when in full fruit and great for those of a creative gourmet persuasion. Traditionally, redcurrants are deployed in pies, summer puddings, jams and jellies. Austrians make Linzer torte, whilst the Russians typically make the juice into wine.

Now take the humble redcurrant bush, heavily bejewelled midsummer, with dramatic clusters of glossy, ruby fruits; fresh, juicy, succulent and genuinely rich in magical antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. Even better, they could be in your back garden, with no air-miles.

Redcurrant jelly makes a gorgeous glaze for fruit tarts and cheesecakes, can be added to gravy and casseroles (adding richness) and is a fabulous accompaniment to hearty roast meats, especially lamb.

Originally from Western Europe and Asia, the redcurrant is a member of the genus Ribes and gooseberry family. It grows to a bush about 1.5m (5ft) in height and width, with bright, acid-green flowers in spring, beloved by bees. At one time, it was a staple food in Europe and widely grown by the Victorians. I suspect that the rise of convenience foods in post-war Britain was the currant’s demise. Redcurrants are essentially culinary, with sharp, grassy flavour, high acid and pectin content (the good healthy bits) and apt to produce an alarming, contorted expression on the face of those brave enough to eat straight from the plant. Not widely grown commercially, you may occasionally encounter these little gems at a fruit farm but rarely greengrocers. However, they are remarkably easy, low maintenance shrubs to grow and cheap to purchase; they’re

42

Redcurrants are also great eaten fresh with cheese and salads; the juice makes a vibrant vinaigrette. Strings of fruit, sugar frosted with egg white and sugar, dangling artfully from the edge of glasses, add style to summer drinks and smart cocktails.

You can even freeze your precious harvest (with or without sugar) to use later in combination with raspberries, crab-apples, plums and other fruits in jellies or puddings. So which varieties should you grow? Unlike apple trees, there is not a huge choice with redcurrants but selecting a good one is important. Speaking to John Munday, manager of the excellent Blackmoor Nurseries, he recommends the variety ‘Rovada’. A good one for beginners, it’s reliable, has heavy crops of large well-flavoured fruit and it’s diseaseresistant. The ‘Rovada’ is a Dutch variety and it’s late flowering (so it misses the frosts) and crops early August. For very early season crops, John reckons ‘Jonkheer van Tets’ is number one, with very large fruit and a good oldfashioned redcurrant flavour.

GROWING TIPS:

The Joy of Redcurrant Jelly:

Any reasonable garden soil in sun or part shade

For 3 kg of fruit, use 500g of sugar per 500ml of juice obtained.

Avoid boggy ground, frost pockets Dig in plenty of compost at planting Feed with Vitax Q4 fertiliser

Prepare your jam jars in advance – sterilise them and warm them; ready to use.

Keep well watered in summer, so the fruits swell

Prepare your fruit:

Harvest when fruits are ripe, shiny and red

Using a fork, remove the fruit from the stalks and wash in water.

Grow as a free-standing ‘goblet-shaped’ bush or cordon on the fence Yield - about 5kg fruit per year per plant See the RHS website for easy pruning www.rhs.org.uk/ Video/Redcurrant-pruning For top quality plants go to Blackmoor Nurseries

Place in a preserving/heavy bottomed pan. Heat gently until the currants are soft and tender (about 45 mins). Once cooked: Mash fruit well, strain through a clean jelly bag. Leave to drain, collecting all the juice. Don’t squeeze the bag, it will make your juice cloudy.

Blackmoor Nurseries, Blackmoor Liss Hampshire GU33 6BS 01420 473576 www.blackmoor.co.uk

Measure the juice (you can add a little water to make it up to the pint mark) and add 500g sugar to each 500ml of juice. Combine sugar and juice in a preserving or heavy bottomed pan and heat. Stir constantly until the mixture boils. Boil for 1 minute only, stirring all the time. Add ½ teaspoon of butter to reduce foaming.

Quickly skim off any froth and discard. Pour jelly into warm jars immediately. Do this quickly as the concentration of pectin and acid is so great, the jelly tends to set in the pan.

CLARITY ON COSTS A share class summary Tom Ware

P

reviously, platforms have competed on the rebates they could offer to clients, through their scale or other superior negotiating power. Nevertheless the size of those rebates and the deals that underpin them have not always been immediately clear to investors. After the recent banning of cash rebates by the FSA and the announcement that unit rebates will be taxable, the industry is now moving towards so-called ‘clean’ share classes. Traditional retail share classes have often incorporated adviser commission, plus platform charges. ‘Clean’ share classes look more like those traditionally available to institutions, where just the fund management fee is included. These will vary depending on whether the fund is a bond, equity or property fund, but 0.75% for a UK equity fund is emerging as an industry standard for ‘clean’ share classes. As yet, there is no industry standard labelling for the 'clean' share class, so investors can only spot a ‘clean’

share class from the pricing. Most of the platforms are working to remove the rebate mechanism completely over time and offer a full range of ‘clean’ share classes. Cofunds, one of the largest platforms, aims to offer around 3000 share classes from July of this year, while Standard Life plans to remove the rebate mechanism by April 2014. To confuse the matter further, some platforms are now talking about a ‘super clean’ share class. These are share classes where the platform has used its purchasing power to negotiate a lower annual management charge from the fund manager. Ultimately, while this may seem complex in the shortterm, the aim is to provide more clarity on costs to the end investor. CHANGES TO LONG-TERM CARE COSTS A welcome initiative Tom Ware

T

wo years on from the Dilnot Commission’s report into long-term care costs in the UK, the Government has finally outlined its plans for long-term care funding. The aim is to bring some certainty to long-term care funding, so people are not forced to use assets built up over a lifetime, such as their family home, to fund care. However, the tight government purse strings mean that the Dilnot recommendations have been diluted. The original recommendation was for a lifetime cap on long-term care costs of £35,000 to £50,000. The government will instead cap costs at £75,000 from April 2017. This is not as far from the original proposals as it may initially appear. When adjusted for inflation, the original £50,000 cap would have been over £60,000. The measure will cost the Exchequer around £1bn, which will be funded largely from employer contributions to the new second tier pension scheme. However, around one fifth of the funding will come from an extension to the freeze on inheritance tax rates at £325,000 per year by three years from 201516. The new measures also raised the threshold at which people can receive government help. At the moment, only those with assets of less than £23,250 receive any help from the Government and this will rise to £123,000 from 2017. This is in line with Dilnot’s original recommendation. Finally, the government said that there would be a separate, annual, ceiling for ‘hotel’ costs such as food and accommodation. The state will pay if these exceed £12,000 per year. Again, after inflation, this is roughly in line with the original Dilnot proposal. Health secretary Jeremy Hunt told MPs at the time, ‘by creating certainty that this is the maximum (people) will have to pay, they can then make provisions through insurance or pension products so that they are covered up to the value of the cap, thereby reducing the risk of selling their home or losing an inheritance they have worked hard to pass on to their family’. He added that he hoped insurance companies and pension schemes would step in to provide cover for costs of up to the £75,000 limit so that costs could be managed.

52

Oxford economist Andrew Dilnot, who led the commission, broadly welcomed the report, saying that while the cap was higher than he would have wanted, he recognised the difficulties facing government finances and said it was broadly similar to the system he had envisaged. The plan drew some critics. Left-leaning think tank Demos claimed that the higher cap meant that only 16% of those aged 65 and over would benefit, rather than the 37% who would have benefited from the £35,000 cap. It labelled the plan ‘unambitious’.

www.edgemagazine.org

Nevertheless, more people need some form of long-term care in old age and the cost of that care is increasing. These measures mean that people no longer need to fear the complete erosion of their wealth through the cost of care and can plan properly. If it is also accompanied by greater consistency in the assessment of care needs between local authorities, it will be a welcome initiative.

THE POISONED ISLAND: A REVIEW A novel by Lloyd Shepherd Mike Stafford

L

loyd Shepherd’s The English Monster was one of the finest books of 2012. A searing indictment of Britain’s role in the slave trade, it transcended genre and introduced a protagonist who cried out for a series. The Poisoned Island is the second book in that series, and has some colossal shoes to fill. The tale begins as Captain Hopkins and his crew returns from a botanical voyage to Tahiti, the ‘poisoned island’ of the title. Loaded with exotic plants, his ship the Solander is struck by tragedy when two of its crew members are brutally murdered just hours after returning to London. Bizarrely, their faces are twisted into gruesome smiles. Constable Horton, the returning hero of The English Monster, is drafted in to investigate.

This being Regency England, the very concept of an ‘investigation’ is in its infancy. Horton’s techniques are avant-garde; he collects evidence, he tries to establish motive and he interrogates suspects. In a world where ‘pin-the-crime-on-the-immigrant’ is the order of the day for officers of the law, Horton is an oddity. Detection in The Poisoned Island is a nascent science, and Shepherd allows us a front row seat as one pioneering policeman lays the foundations of the crime-fighting of the modern era. As with Shepherd’s debut though, murder isn’t the only crime under the microscope. Britain’s role in world history is examined in unvarnished detail. The island of Tahiti is raped both literally and figuratively, with celebrated botanists no longer able to control their lusts than the baser seamen who visit the island over a generation. To Shepherd’s credit, whilst he might not celebrate the excesses of colonialism, he also avoids the kind of liberal hand-wringing that might dissuade more conservative readers. He is, in the final analysis, merely honest. Are the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew a magnificent place of beauty? Undoubtedly. Did British seafarers plunder the world in order to populate them? Without question. Although Shepherd’s authority figures and botanical pioneers are largely wellintentioned types, the overall enterprise of Empirebuilding is a grubby one, unleashing the worst desires of bounders and brigands. Despite this, there remains something profoundly exciting about the time in which Shepherd sets the book. He catches the tail end of the Age of Enlightenment; much of the world is yet to be discovered, geographically, scientifically and culturally. For the elite at least, there is a sense of an upward surge in man’s understanding of the world. Leaving aside the squalid living conditions experienced by the lower orders, it seems quite a time to have been alive. Penning a worthy sequel to The English Monster would have been a tough task for any author but with The Poisoned Island, Shepherd has done just that. This too is a considered, genre-blending romp, casting a humane eye over British history. Constable Horton, while clearly not intended to carry this series in the manner of a Rebus or Sharpe, is a strong character, with enough torment in his back-story to keep readers coming back for more, and on the strength of The Poisoned Island, they surely will.

MEDIEVAL MEETS MODERN WarwickTweetup’s local challenge

I

n April, local Warwick digital marketer and social media master Todd from WarwickTweetup continued Warwick’s fight against the internet, taking on the challenge of shopping locally for a whole month but blogging about it every single day and sharing his journey with a worldwide audience. In these difficult times for retail you’d be forgiven for thinking that traditional high streets are dying out in the face of technology. But one town in Warwickshire has been harnessing the power that threatens its butcher, baker and candlestick maker for a while now, turning it like a sword on its attacker and using it to devastating effect too. The challenge was to shop within the boundaries of Warwick for an entire month for absolutely everything. This meant using many of the fabulous independent businesses but also buying from the bigger brands too. It was a real test of Warwick as a town. I found gluten-free sandwich suppliers, traditional tea rooms, rods to unblock drains, sausages from independent butchers, parts for broken doors and bags of items from Warwick’s weekly market. I found that Warwick had almost everything you need to survive in the 21st century, even getting my teeth whitened, finding free WiFi in the unlikeliest of places and dining out in fantastic Spanish and Lebanese restaurants. The month of blogging posed many challenges and ironically the laptop that produced most of the blogs also produced one of the only failures for the challenge when

it needed a new battery. However, Warwick stood up well to the modern test. It entertained, it replenished, it catered, it kept a six-year-old amused for hours for free... and yes, it does have a wonderful castle too! Warwick has been working very hard on the digital superhighway over the last few years and its Twitter in particular is something to behold. The little town of Warwick gained attention from across the UK in 2012 during its Portas Pilot bid and even drew the eye of Mary Portas herself, all via blogging and Twitter. The buying local in April blog is my latest digital quest and has gained almost 5,500 views from all over the globe in just a month, and given some much needed exposure to the range of businesses that Warwick has to offer. I know that the internet is not going away. By understanding it and using it, traditional businesses in towns like Warwick can improve their popularity and boost their sales. My hope is that small business owners in particular will make the most of the many free tools at their disposal. Warwick is truly harnessing the power of social media and WarwickTweetup is building strong digital links, both within the tight-knit Warwick community and also with neighbouring towns and cities. You can read Todd’s Buy Local journey at www.toddbuyslocalinapril.wordpress. com or contact him on todd@warwicktweetup.co.uk if you’re a small local business and you’d like to find out more.

Morgan Plus 8 A modern classic Liam Bird

C

oat: check. Scarf: check. Gloves: check. Hat: check. Slim fitting shoes: check.

Slim fitting shoes? Yep, slim fitting shoes. I’m about to drive Morgan’s new Plus 8 and previous experience of the products of Malvern Link’s Pickersleigh Road has taught me that they’re not the kind of things you drive in your walking boots, even if like me, you’re not exactly prop-forward material. I’m happy to use both brake and accelerator together whilst indulging in a little heal-and-toe downchanging but I’d rather not do it inadvertently. So slim fitting shoes it is, even if they’re not as warm as my Meindls. The Morgan Plus 8 promises to be the ultimate fusion of Morgan’s traditional craftsmenship and its modern chassis technology. By clothing the bonded aluminium chassis Morgan use to underpin their unashamedly art deco looking Aero cars with the more traditional (albeit stretched a little) looking bodywork of their Roadsters, they’ve created what just might be the ultimate modern classic. Not only is it charming in its appearance – sinister too when bumperless and painted jet black as per the example kindly loaned me for today’s drive into Worcestershire - but the Plus 8 is seriously, astonishingly even, quick. Below the Plus 8’s multi-louvered, centrally hinged bonnet lies a 4.8 litre V8 engine courtesy of BMW; it pumps out somewhere in the region of 370bhp. It’s coupled, in this case to a beautifully mechanical feeling 6 speed manual gearbox, complete with clickety sounding gate and, well that’s it. There’s no traction control, or for that matter any other form of electronic safety net or driver aid. All inputs are your own. In the dry, the Plus 8 will touch 80 in second; in the wet it will spin its rear wheels in fourth for fun. You do get ABS, airbags and power steering though and you can specify an auto box too, if that’s your thing. With its mohair hood in place entry and exit to the Plus 8 is... how shall I put this?...challenging. The sill is wide and the door low. Gaining entry seems to be a matter of tumbling in head first, getting your torso in over the transmission tunnel and then treading your legs in and down towards the floor-hinged pedals. You can see why most Morgan owners choose to drive top down even in winter; getting in with ‘easyup’ roof stowed is just so much easier. Today though it’s close to freezing and frankly, I’m not so hardy. Once you’re in, the steering wheel sits close to your chest, the seats are snug, if a little upright, and storage space is seriously limited. Two slim

60

door pockets and a cubby behind the seats are the only hints towards ‘luggage capacity’. Also, there’s nowhere to rest your left foot – hence those narrow shoes – but, with the air con, on the Plus 8’s leather clad cabin proves surprisingly cosy. Turn the key and thumb the starter and then, after a couple of churns, the V8 fires. It sounds magnificent, shattering Malvern’s cool morning air with a deep base rumble, the kind of which only a big V8 can make. A few decadent throttle blips are hard to resist. Once on the move it’s clear that the Plus 8 demands your attention. The clutch requires a firm push, the brakes a firmer one but once warm, the big AP racing rotors seem more than up to the task of bringing this fly weight soft top to a halt, whatever its velocity. The steering fidgets in your hands and feels wonderfully direct and you soon learn, despite your initial reactions, to loosen your grip of the wheel so as to guide the Plus 8 rather than manhandle it. The way it immediately reacts to pressure on the accelerator is a constant reminder you that you could quite as easily determine this car’s trajectory with your right foot as you could with your right hand. The Plus 8 is a brute, its combination of firm ride and what can only be described as savage performance, together with its aural delights, makes nearly everything else you’ve ever driven feel sterile by comparison. There simply is nothing else quite like it. And that, ultimately, is the Plus 8’s raison d’être. It’s madly impractical and yet utterly addictive. At £82,500 it’s far from cheap but part of the appeal of Morgan ownership has always been that they make bespoke cars, meaning you’re unlikely to ever encounter two that are exactly the same. Hopefully the same won’t be said for the slim fitting shoes you’ll need to go with it. If you’ve enjoyed reading about the Morgan Plus 8 and you’d like to try out the Morgan 4/4 hire with Revival Cars and the fantastic packages at Wroxall Abbey, you can find out more on page 48. MIDLANDS AIR AMBULANCE Saving lives by saving time Hannah Griffiths

O

n the 21st May 1991 a handful of people launched a new air ambulance service. Entitled ‘Air 5’ the service was one of the first of its kind in the UK and would be operational 5 days a week. The ‘Air 5’ service simply aimed to provide help and assistance with the transportation of victims of major accidents to hospital in the fastest time possible. Six days after ‘Air 5’ was launched the team responded to their first flying mission after a woman suffered a fall on the mountainside in Hay-on-Wye. The crew stabilised the woman before airlifting her to Hereford County Hospital in six minutes making the charity’s first mission a success. ‘Air 5’ changed the way rescue missions were conducted. Eventually ‘Air 5’was renamed ‘County Air Ambulance’ in recognition of the 11 counties of England and Wales that were served by the charity. In the mid to late 90s ‘County Air Ambulance’ operating hours were reviewed and increased to 10 hours a day 7 days a week, these have since been reviewed again and have now increased to 16 hours in summer months and 12 hours in winter months. The charity also launched a second operational helicopter and began using Strensham airbase, the UK’s first motorway airbase proving to be an excellent location for responding to incidents in the quickest time possible. This was shortly followed by a third helicopter commencing operation. In 2009 the charity underwent yet another name change this time to ‘Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’ with the aim to increase the affiliation between the service and the communities it serves. The Midlands Air Ambulance now serves the largest air ambulance region in the UK including areas such as: Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands and Worcestershire, representing a population in excess of 5.5 million. The charity responds to an average of 3000 missions each year making them one of the longest established and busiest air ambulance operators in the UK. Every year the crew attend over 1000 road traffic accidents on some of the most congested motorway networks in the country, providing rapid life-saving actions and treatment. The charity’s three aircrafts each carry a crew comprising a pilot, two paramedics or flight doctors plus full life-support medical equipment. The rapid response of the Midlands Air Ambulance is extremely vital in any emergency situation. Operating from a strategically located regional airbase, the

62

maximum flying time to hospital from anywhere in the region is less than 15 minutes with a patient’s chances of survival being dramatically increased if they reach hospital within 60 minutes, known as the Golden Hour. Each year it costs in excess of £6 million to keep the charity’s helicopters operational and without any funding from the Government or the National Lottery the charity relies solely on donations made by the public and local businesses. This year, Midlands Air Ambulance Charity will be recognising some very special people and organisations that have made a real difference towards saving lives in the counties they serve with the third annual Recognition Awards and Charity Ball. The acknowledgement of these unsung heroes will include ways in which supporters and volunteers have raised vital funds, Midlands Air Ambulance crew members who have performed above and beyond the call of duty, Airlift survivors who have come through situations of major trauma and organisations that have supported MAAC to ensure vital donations keep the service operational. Set to be a sparkling evening, the awards will take place at Edgbaston Stadium on Saturday 29th June 2013. The black tie event will start with the arrival of one of the service’s famous red helicopters, before the drinks reception. Guests will then be treated to a fantastic four course dinner, which will be followed by live entertainment, a fun casino, silent auction and prestigious raffle. In addition, special guests from the world of media, sport and entertainment will also be in attendance. Jason Levy, fundraising and marketing director for the charity explains, ‘we wouldn’t be the much loved and well recognised charity that we are without the fantastic support we receive from local volunteers, fundraisers and organisations. They literally keep us in the air, so this is our way of thanking each and every one of them’. The event is being held in conjunction with the West Midlands CARE Team and tickets cost £55 per person or £550 per table of ten. For more information about the Recognition Awards and Charity Ball and the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity please contact the team.

THE NATURE OF THE BEAST The New Art Gallery Walsall Lucinda Bunn

I

n our series from the Heart of England galleries, we’re bringing you updates throughout the year on must-see exhibitions, what to look for and who to look up. This month, we’re going back to nature with a showcase from The New Art Gallery Walsall. It’s been over ten years since the gallery opened its doors beside the Walsall canal. And it seems to have continued to open doors for the small Black Country town ever since. The range of works is wide, exploring contemporary themes in a modern setting; the not-sonew gallery maintains its fresh-faced collections of some of the finest pieces from the 20th century to the present day. From now until June 30th, The New Art Gallery Walsall is feeding our fascination with animals. The Nature of the Beast exhibition is on the third floor; an open space featuring sculptures, photographs, pencil on paper and oil paintings.

Polly Morgan, Harbour 2012 (detail), taxidermy, rubber and mixed media. Courtesy of the artist. Photo: Tessa Angus.

Mat Collinshaw’s Insecticide pieces draw on our obsession with ‘bug killing’ and disinfecting. This is a very different showcase for Collinshaw, whose flattened creatures are printed as laser images on 35mm glass slide carriers. Collinshaw’s pieces bring together beauty and cruelty; this is a must-see. Olly & Suzi bring their latest works to Walsall too. They describe their art-making process as a ‘collaborative, mutual response to nature at its most primitive and wild’. The duo is inspired by Native American mythologies and their relationship with animals. Thomas Bewick’s 18th century pieces will also be

64

displayed. He famously illustrated the Aesop’s Fables. Petra Feriancova has devoted her life to understanding the human need to manipulate nature, beauty and life; she shares her ornithologist grandfather’s images of the new species of pigeons he created with other breeders in the 1950s. Each image is the evidence of an improvement or a mistake, each with annotated measurements, dates and comments on the developments of the tests. Tessa Farmer is an artist like no other. She also joins the contemporary and diverse range of artists at The Nature of the Beast exhibition. On finding out Tessa was a sculptor of fairy miniatures, I have to say, I wasn’t in the least bit enthralled. But forget the overromanticised version and instead remember that fairies have a malevolent, morbid nature to them. Tessa’s macabre species are crafted from organic materials, some collected and some donated. Each figure stands at just 1cm tall. Imagine a fantasy underworld of powerdriven fairies, a bit of the Victorian occult with a bit of alien futuristic. Tessa’s sculptures are gothic, sinister and bewitching. Now you’re intrigued. Tessa describes herself as the ‘conjurer’ of these creatures but we wanted to know where she draws the line between art and life. Where did your fascination with fairies and insects come from? When I was a child I loved reading the Mary Barker books like Flower Fairies of the Spring. Then when I went

to university, I became interested in human anatomy. I made 3D human skeletons out of branches and twigs; I suppose I’m quite obsessive about details. Then that evolved into foetal flower fairies. Naturally.

wrote a note asking me not to portray him as a bad character because he was such a sweet-natured animal. So I’m still waiting for the right part to come along for this chinchilla.

What draws you to miniature things?

How much are these creatures a part of your world?

I like the idea of miniature worlds. There’s something mystical about all things small. And I suppose that’s what I try to inspire, a spark in the imagination in a bid to reignite a childlike curiosity.

In many ways, I feel like their host. It’s as if they’re taken over and they tell me how to arrange them. I don’t understand them fully; they mimic fairies, dress up like insects and practise parasitism.

Talk me through your process.

How do you see your work developing in the future?

There’s no set routine. The whole body of work has an evolving narrative. I imagine a scenario and try to recreate it. It’s really about how the creatures survive and so the pieces change as I build them and then change again when I install them.

I’d like to work more with film and animation. I also do drawing in a similar way through a tiny microscope; I’d like to do more of that.

What measures must you take when working on a small scale?

Well, next month I’ll be in Tasmania on a group exhibition called The Red Queen. We’re showcasing at Mona (Museum of Old and New Art). Then next year, I am going on an expedition to Chile with a team of scientists. They will be doing their research and I will be observing and collecting ideas so there’ll be this marriage between science and art that I like to bring to my work.

If I drop something, that’s really frustrating. They’re very delicate pieces really and sometimes, when they’re dropped, it’s easier to start again, rather than trying to salvage the original. What features of insects and humans did you want to incorporate into your creatures?

Mark Fairnington, Soldier, 2009. Oil on canvas. Courtesy of the artist and Galerie Peter Zimmerman. Photo: Peter White.

They’re very practical in the way that insects are too. They enjoy problem-solving and achieving things. But their interaction can be human-like; like their wit and intellect. They’re quite sinister too though. Often, friends give me collected materials to use in my work. Most recently, my friend donated his dead pet chinchilla. He

IDEAS FOR DAD New experiences this Father’s Day Lucinda Bunn

If you’re stuck for inspiration this Father’s Day, we have some ideas, with experience days and events to spark new interests and celebrate hobbies. We’ve kept things local, as always and we’ve tried to steer clear of any stereotyping.

The barbecuing dad - Fleet Street Kitchen is offering a chance for your father to become a

‘natural’ behind the BBQ this summer. With a fun-filled tutorial, he’ll be shown the secrets on how to perfect the ideal meats to impress your friends and family. Not only will your dad be front of stage in the Fleet Street Kitchen restaurant, he’ll also be up close and personal with the only barbacoa grill installed in the UK. Embarrassing apron optional. www.fleetstreetkitchen.co.uk

The car crazy dad - Whether your dad’s into his vintage motors or

adrenaline pumping ride-outs, the Heritage Motor Centre on the Banbury Road has everything under one roof. From museum exhibitions like the Jaguar Heritage display to the Land Rover Experience, where you can take part in an outdoor Land Rover adventure, the Heritage Motor Centre is a one-stop shop for motor enthusiasts. At the moment, they’re showcasing the Land Rover Defender II0, driven in the opening sequence of Skyfall (2012). Well, if it’s good enough for Bond... www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk

The rocker dad With the surge of classic rock band documentaries that have hit our screens in the last year, think Crossfire Hurricane (2012) and Celebration Day (2012), next up is The History of the Eagles (2013). Recently released on DVD, you can now get your hands on the first part of the three hour long documentary. The reviews are good and if your dad’s a fan of The Eagles, it’s a must. But if you think he’d prefer some live action, The Illegal Eagles will be playing all the classics from ‘Tequila Sunrise’ to ‘Hotel California’, at The Royal Spa Centre, Leamington, this September. www.royalspacentreandtownhall.co.uk

The breadmaking dad - Breadmaking is a craft worth perfecting. From

artisan loaves to pizza doughs, your dad will gain expertise in his favourite past time with a breadmaking course at Red Hen Cookery, Worcester. It’s the gift that keeps on giving, so the entire family can get used to freshly baked bread, made at home by your very own baker boy. There’s also the special Father’s Day Dad and Kid’s Workshop on June 16th so the whole family can get involved. Book your dad a place and put his passion into practice. www.redhencookeryschool.co.uk

The ale-drinking dad - Established in 2008 with a desire to bring brewing back to Bewdley, Bewdley Brewery is a family run business combining the passion of the father and son brewing team and the very best raw materials available. Bewdley Brewery produces quality beers of varying strengths, colours and most importantly… taste. Only four ingredients are used in the making of their beer; English malted barley, water, carefully blended hops from Worcestershire and yeast. If your dad loves real ale, then why not treat him to a Bewdley Beer gift pack, with bottles of his favourite beer. www.bewdleybrewery.co.uk

The crafty dad - Top Glass at the Jinney Ring in Hanbury is offering glassblowing lessons for an unusual gift this Father’s Day. If your creative dad is up for a challenge, then a 1-2 hour long glassblowing session is just the ticket. Using traditional methods and ‘small furnace’ technology, Top Glass specialise in exquisite, handmade glassware. The team use 30% lead crystal when creating their glass pieces; this gives a stunning clarity and a captivating radiance to the finished pieces. Embrace the alternative this Father’s Day with Top Glass. www.topglass.biz

The ‘in need of TLC’ dad - If you get annoyed with your dad for not taking care of himself, then a pamper session at Billesley Manor Spa and Hotel will give him the file and polish he needs. Perhaps it’s a manly facial he’s in desperate need of, or a deep tissue massage; either way, he’ll thank you later. The Essential Facial quenches dry skin and is suitable for all skin types and the deluxe pedicure will treat any feet to the luxury of soft heels and nourished toes. With full use of the spa facilities too, Billesley Manor is the perfect treat for your main man. www.pumahotels.co.uk/hotels/billesley-manor-hotel-stratford-upon-avon

The gardening dad - Your outdoorsy dad will love a chance to take a toured walk around Ragley Hall gardens. He’ll take a stroll around the gardens between 11am until 3pm, enjoy the scenery and pick up some tips on maintaining landscapes. The gardening team, led by Head Gardener Ross Barbour, will be on hand to explain why and how the gardens were created and answer gardening questions too. www.ragley.co.uk

BEWDLEY Your essential guide Hannah Griffiths

A

s the seasons change and summer finally arrives we’ve headed west of the county to bring you a hidden gem, a place where the river runs smoother, the birds sing sweeter and the sun always shines (well mostly). Nestled in the Wyre Forest District of Worcestershire is Bewdley, this town sits directly upon the River Severn; an area steeped in rich industrial and agricultural history with a gateway to The Marches. With its connection to one of the most famous rivers in the country, Bewdley has long been a favoured spot for angling, a sport which due to its growth in popularity has led to annual festivals in this quiet town. However if you prefer to keep a safe distance from the water’s edge, Bewdley has a lot more to offer. If you’re looking to spend the day exploring Bewdley and the surrounding area then hop aboard the Severn Valley Railway at Bewdley train station. The full size standardgauge railway line runs regular steam hauled passenger trains between Kidderminster and Worcestershire and Bridgnorth in Shropshire; for the benefit of visitors and enthusiasts alike. The journey is full of interest as the route closely follows the meandering course of the River Severn. The scenery is varied and largely unspoiled, punctuated by the quaint ‘olde worlde’ charm of country stations, each one giving ready access to local villages and riverside walks. If you fancy immersing yourself in nature then Bewdley is the perfect spot for you. Surrounded by the picturesque green land that is the Wyre Forest, Bewdley is the perfect place to stroll arm in arm and enjoy the landscape. If you’re seeking a little more adventure, Wyre Forest is

also home to Go Ape, the UK’s number one tree top adventure. Situated in the most ecologically significant woodlands in England, Wyre Forest’s Go Ape allows visitors to embark on tree-top crossings, experience windin-your-face zip wires and scour the land on segways. Whether you fancy Merchant’s fish and chips by the river, the elegant mix of pub classic and modern creative cuisine at The Hop Pole Inn or a taste of India at The Rajput, Bewdley’s a foodie favourite. Why not make a weekend of it and stay in one of Bewdley’s finest hotels? Bordering the beautiful River Severn and overlooking the cricket ground is Number Thirty, a tranquil bed and breakfast where you can relax and indulge in this charming location. Or if you fancy staying in nearby Kidderminster, the Mercure Hotel is just a chug away via the Severn Valley Railway. Whenever you choose to visit Bewdley there’s guaranteed to be something to please the entire family. There’s the annual duck racing in January, the Carnival in June or Bewdley Festival in October. You’re bound to find a whole host of new activities to enjoy.
