Architectural Typology Overlaps By working on various projects in three major countries and cultures of the world, one encounters unique residential living habits that factor into the architectural planning. But also present is a systematic orgnization of common key architectural elements that often times overlatp the requirements of an occupant of these regions.
Collaboration Diagrams A unique collaborative system while at RTKL allowed me to interface with multiple team members while working on varios tasks at different times. Because of team members based in Shanghai and the drastic time zone difference, we were abke ti maintain almost a 24 hour workflow. It meant extra emphasis on communication but paid off in the end with efficiently done projects. 6

CAPITOL COMMONS Capitol Commons Manila, Philippines
Description The “Pearl of the Batis,” RTKL’s master plan for the city of Pasig, reintroduces vibrancy into the once thriving birthplace of Manila, Philippines. With a strong mix of retail, entertainment, residential and office uses, the project still manages to preserve over 50% of the site for open green space. Among the new amenities are a 31,500 SM indoor / outdoor mall showcasing international brands and lifestyle retailers; a five-level, 21,500 cinema; and a new three-level 21,300 SM Unimart providing the widest array of local and international grocery items available in the region. These offerings are complimented by Capitol Commons Park, a public space for relaxation and leisure activities.

CAPITOL COMMONS Capitol Commons Manila, Philippines
Description. Seven residential towers—Royalton, Imperium, & Maven, and four others yet to be named—and two office towers will enable tenants to live and work in an exciting environment, setting a new benchmark for modern urban living. The plan is further enhanced by intentional improvements to traffic circulation with the introduction of Camino Verde road, which serves as the central artery providing multi-modal connections throughout the site.
Site Plan
Aerial Rendering Capitol Commons Manila, Philippines 15
CAPITOL COMMONS Tower Configurations Various tower placements and orientations were tested on the site in response to the different climate and environmental factors in Manila. Solar energy gain, views towards mountains, and street axis were taken into account. FAR and different area and program stacking scenarious were explored. Eventually, a feng shui approach was taken where the tallest tower was placed at the highest point on the site, and the following towers stepped down in height.

THE ROYALTON Description Located on the site of the old provincial government seat of Quezon City, Philippines, The Royalton is a high-rise residential tower and part of a larger mixed- used masterplan development by RTKL which includes four other residential towers, a high-end mall, hypermart, cinema, and park. Because of the phasing breakdown, the client’s desire was for the first tower to be modern and iconic; to set a precedent for the rest of the development. Residential Site The design of the Estancia Mall to the north and the adjacent Riverparc implies a central node of activity within the Capitol Commons Site. The Residential tower parcel completes the circle, simultaneously focusing attention at the center of the site while also creating a buffer zone from the adjacent neighborhood to the southeast.

. . . a masterplan that revisits the eastern edge of the Old City of Como and proposes an entirely new urban landscape that simultaneously creates an international studies center and reworks the transportation in the immediate surrounding area along the eastern wall and leading up to the Lake Como waterfront. The brief was to design a Study Center for international students and visitors but TRANSIT(ions) proposes the creation of a transit hub with mixed-use programs of train station, bus stop, work studios, residential student housing, urban parks, and waterfront redevelopment.

Defining The Elements If the tower were a “window” onto the future of the development, the undulating and sinuous form of the balconies represent the lining and sheer of the window curtains, made up of several layers and material, swaying in the breeze. They also invoke the form of a veil or dress, wrapping around and pulling away at certain parts to expose the inner skin. 23
* LEFT: Tower Perspecttve (3D Studio Max) * RIGHT: Skin Studies (CAD, Illustrator, Sketchup) 24
Skin Studies The function of the balconies aside from offering excellent views of the surrounding cityscape were two-fold. The curving forms help to both shade interior spaces from the harsh afternoon sun as well as “confuse the wind enough to lighten the lateral load on such a long and skinny tower. 25

- Starting from scratch again to piece the plan together. This time, the first priority was to lay out the units according to area requirements but on a totally orthogonal and rectangular layout. This way, all the rooms are 90 degrees and there are no angled walls or pie-shaped rooms.

Structural Solutions MKA and RTKL came to a final solution comprised of post-tensioned flat slab floor plates and a robust full-height reinforced concrete core with special reinforced concrete wing walls. In addition to employing state-of-the-art site-specific wind tunnel testing, seismic hazard analysis and performance based design, MKA and RTKL successfully encouraged the developer to perform site-specific shear wave velocity testing. a first in the Philippines.. 27

THE IMPERIUM Description RTKL’s master plan originally had 200m plus twin towers placed side-by side on the site, only 9 meters apart. One triangle, one diamond. MKA was brought on board early in the design process to help with a more efficient structural product and warned about possible vortex winds being channeled through this narrow gap and creating “lift” on the towers. Several different offset locations and forms were explored and put through a wind tunnel test facility at RWDI in Toronto. Wind - After initial site wind tunnel tests, it was realized that the tower design would have to take into account significant lateral wind loads from ALL directions at their highest peaks because of the local typhoon events. - It was also found that the placement and form of the first tower, Royalton, accelerated wind towards a point 60 degress from north where the facade of Tower 2, the Imperium, was planned.
REGENT & EMPRESS
- This was causing significant loads on one side of the triangular tower.

Shaping of the Form The design team was able to narrow down a set of specific parameters for the mass and form of the tower that would help in reducing wind loads. A circle first came to mind as not only did it present a smoother surface with no corners for wind to catch on, but it also helped create a more regular space for the units . A vertical fin placed exactly at the 60 degree spot helped redirect the wind. An inset mass at the top helped reduce lift on the tower. 41

Buckling Restrained Brace (BRB) spans five floors
Performance Driven Design - Downward-angled canted glass helps redirect an occupant’s gaze downwards toward the park at Capitol Commons and limit the surface area for direct sunlight to hit. - Lightshelf was also added to help bounce ambient light back into the unit – creating a more naturally brightened living area. The shelf was also used to place the air conditioning unit - Operable windows were included to help naturally ventilate the rooms and save on electricity costs to run the AC units. 49

MAVEN Description
The Maven towers were designed following the launch of Royalton & Imperium. While the former buildings were marketed as higher end luxury units for the older family-oriented generation, Maven was meant to cater to a younger, more hip generation of single Manila urban dwellers. Smaller units but more exciting amenities were requested from the client. As well as an eye-catching, playful facade design. Structural Integration Awkward site constraints and setbacks and a high FAR led to the formation of a two-tower scheme - a short 40-story square tower and a taller 60-story tower. But the tall tower had a skinny profile, which the team anitcipated would have issues in the face of lateral wind loads. A long and skinny core coupled with a middle atrium meant buttress or wing shear walls would provide the best stabilization. Integrating the structure proved a challenge with such small units.

PHASE 2B TOWER I Description Sharing the same Circulo Verde site as Avila, Tower 1 of Phase 2B was meant as a shorter, efficient, small unit building. Overlooking a small retail center called Industria, Tower 1 was the first of 3 in Phase 2B that would allow tenants a nice view of the Pasig River and a lush amenity deck in their backyard. The challenge was to create an efficient floor plan layout for a 20 story tower and maximize the amount of small units while still creating an interesting but economical elevation. Client: Ortigas & Company Limited Partnership Height: 82 Meters Floors: 24 FLOORS Structural Material: PT Concrete Flat Slab, Reinforced Concrete Core Building Function: Residential - 476 UNITS - 13,000 SM NET SALEABLE - 17,000 SM GBA Construction Start: 2017 Construction Completion: Estimated 2019 Architect of Record: GF&P Architects Structural Engineer: Thornton Thomasetti

Environmental Response Extensive solar and wind studies were performed on the Circulo Verder site model in order to gauge the environmental impact and response these towers would need. As the main facades that overlook the river also happen to face west, different solutions on the elevation would have to come into play.

Structural Peer Review The significant seismic activity and frequent typhoon events in the Manila area posed a great challenge to the structural design. But a look at the initial local structural consultants’ drawings showed them to be using very conservative and outdated designs. RTKL recommended that the client bring in MKA, an internationally recognized structural engineer in the U.S., to conduct a peer review and evaluate the project for potential value engineering 101

Structural Peer Review Upon completion of an initial study, MKA presented two suggested ways forward; Track 1: keeping the original design exactly as it was but upgrading the structural detailing as to be consistent with the most current industry standards, or Track 2: completely revamping the system to allow for superior structural performance and also provide significant cost savings. MKA worked together with RTKL and the local design team to incorporate the proposed structural system with the previous architectural program. As the majority of the units already had been pre-sold, the preservation of the previous architecture was very important. Specifically, MKA utilized state of the art site specific wind tunnel testing and seismic hazard analysis. The final product resulted in a refined structural system that decreased construction time, allowed greater architectural flexibility, and reduced costs by approximately 3 million dollars. The proposed system replaced a cumbersome and inefficient back-up moment frame that included many beams and columns with a more robust concrete core wall design and specially-designed buckling restrained outrigger braces. The final structural design provides flat slabs, no beams, and 50% less columns. This resulted in units with slightly more area, fewer columns interrupting the spaces, and a greater floor to floor height. 103

JING’AN SOHO Description Jing’an district is one of Shanghai’s key central business and commercial areas. It contains numerous large office buildings, hotels, and many shopping venues at the street level. The district was named after Jing’an Temple, an ancient traditional Chinese Buddhist temple located in the southern part of the district. The client was looking for a concept that would be able to keep up with the speed and movement of a growing city. Something that would be classic and timeless at the same time. A mixed-use project that would contain two office towers, service apartment high rises, and a small lifestyle villa & retail district.

设计概念方案2-线性舞动 CONCEPT OPTION 2 - RECTILINEAR ANIMATION
The Rectilinear Animation concept comes from the existing orthogonal urban grid. The protruding balconies and bay windows create an interesting rhythm and also allow the residential units to have flexibility for multiple layout types. The pattern it generates invokes the image of an organic plant enveloping the structure. The two towers create their own strong architectural identity while remaining consistent with the office towers beside them.

CONCEPT OPTION 3 - ORGANIC LATTICE
The Organic Lattice takes the idea of a butterfly and plays off of the interlaced patterning of butterfly wings. The pattern becomes an intricately woven web which forms the exterior skeletal structure of the buildings. This delicate lattice weaves its way in different forms throughout the two towers, providing a subtle sun shade for the units, and enhancing the dynamic of the whole site.
