This project is a design of a new studio space for a local sculptor and photographer residing in Uvongo on the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal. The limited space, light and ventilation of the current studio (a converted double garage and store room attached to his home), limits his ability and is in dire need for an upgrade to enhance and develop creativity and production. The current space also doubles as a drama studio run by his wife, which likewise is burdened by the photographic and sculpting activities. The idea was to introduce a new structure to house the sculpting, photographic and admin activities, completely isolated from the garage. This frees the garage space to be used exclusively for the drama school. The position of the new structure is as far to the site boundary as possible, creating a courtyard space between the exiting and the new. Both facilities open onto this new landscaped courtyard area, providing a barrier of green between the two operations, but a shared spill over as well. The new structure is designed as a 'barn warehouse' type style, with extra ceiling height and volume, and various sliding and tilting walls to allow for controlled ventilation and sun control. Translucent polycarbonate sheeting is used for the walls allowing as much natural light as possible to enter the structure. The northern façade has a wall of louvres to block direct sunÂrays but to still allow natural light to filter through. There is a punctured screen wall between the 2 spaces, that will allow ever changing light and shadow to filter into the courtyard and provide a sense of passing time throughout the day. A light weight pergola runs in front of this screen wall, acting as a transitional zone between the private function of the existing home and the public function and entrance of the studio. The construction method was extremely important, and the steel warehouse structure not only assisted with a sensitive budget, but has created a dynamic and creative space meeting all expectations for a successful sculpting and photographic studio.
