We bought the apartment because of its unusually large rooms. Typical of the 80's style, the rooms were separated from one another by walls and single doorways in. We visualised an open plan design, to take advantage of light from large steel framed windows situated on both ends of the apartment, to dramatically lighten the otherwise darkness caused by the blatant separating screen walls. Not only did we achieve much improved lighting, but the openness onto the kitchen and dining areas, now has a special social and inclusive feel to it, that has totally transformed the adhoc spaces into something magical and fresh. The kitchen area in particular consisted of wood grained shaker style doors, vinyl veneer tops, orangey vinyl flooring and a twotone tile arrangement of white and green on the walls. Gutted the room entirely demolished 2 walls and their doors, removed tiles, cabinets, fittings etc.. All plumbing was repositioned and electrics rewired completely including moving the DB. I designed our beautiful kitchen and my father made it for us. This was created by using shutter ply for both carcasses and doors, that were then white washed and sealed. These were complemented with sleek chrome recessed handles. The sink was changed to a deep ceramic type, coupled with a large chrome mixer. Splash backs were tiled with a white bevelled metro tile, and surface tops in a snow white caesor stone. Floors were rescreeded a light grey colour, and all remaining walls painted white. The ceilings were re skimmed smooth and painted white. Lighting consists of a combination of hanging bulb pendants and down lights. Surrounding passage carpets were removed, exposing timber parquet flooring, that were relayed in a herringbone pattern, resanded and sealed. The kitchen is essentially designed around a centre island, allowing multiple access throughout the space. This heart of the space includes a gas stove top, oven & extractor. To save space, the washing machine and tumble dryer are stacked and tucked around a corner. the additional light filtering through to all spaces has transformed this apartment into a delightful place to hang out, and we are absolutely in love with the space that has now been created.
